Free dining in both a main dining room (MDR) and buffet is typical of most ships. Search around the ship for light or quick meals.

Other activities like roller coasters, zip lines, rock climbing walls, pickle ball , and even ice skating are just a few of the many recreational options offered. The daily programs include fun events like trivia, bingo, demonstrations, solo gatherings, and learning activities as well. Some of these activities are complimentary while others may come with an additional charge.

Further, gyms keep guests in shape. Spa facilities lure guests with the wide variety of treatments and demonstrations. One just needs to look at the daily program and make a choice from the many options available. Fitness classes and spa treatments will cost extra on most mainstream cruise lines though.

Carnival Cruise Line

Celestyal cruises, costa cruises, msc cruises, norwegian cruise line, royal caribbean.

Carnival recently welcomed their 100 millionth passenger onboard. With so many passengers who have sailed with this cruise line, it’s logical to think that many first-time cruisers selected this company. Carnival emphasizes “fun” in their product and even has Shaquille O’Neal as its chief fun officer.

Many Carnival ships depart from Florida ports, and cruises to warm weather destinations like the Caribbean are numerous. Both short and long cruises are available, with cruises listed in the Carnival Journeys category being longer and often to more exotic destinations.

Carnival Fun Italian Style itineraries use ships from Costa, Carnival’s sister brand. These have an emphasis on Italian flair without sacrificing the fun element that Carnival is known for.

Those looking for a culinary experience will find several specialty restaurants featuring fare from renowned chefs. With Emeril, as Carnival’s chief culinary officer, you will find not only his Bistros at sea, but a selection of other dining experiences. Some of those alternatives are Shaq’s Big Chicken and Guy’s Burger Joint (both included). For an additional charge, guests can enjoy Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse, Rudi’s Seagrill, and Il Viaggio.

If Greece is on your radar, check out Celestyal’s itineraries. Sail with them on 3-14 day itineraries. Their focus is on the Greek experience with visits to many of the Greek islands. To share the Greek hospitality, they do include certain complimentary beverages at meal times.

Port fees, gratuities, and service charges are included in your fare as well. If you want to see more of Greece than Santorini and Athens, Celestyal is a cruise line to consider.

Based in Italy, this cruise line specializes in the Italian experience. The majority of their cruises sail European itineraries, but they do include a few itineraries in other parts of the world.

Who doesn’t like Italian food? You would definitely expect pasta and gelato on a cruise with Italian fare, but are you a Nutella fan? Costa features a spot where you can try all things Nutella. How cool is that?

And to take culinary inspirations from the ports that Costa visits, three chefs, Bruno Barbieri, Hélène Darroze, and Ángel León have a nightly treat for you. At dinner time, one of the dishes features local ingredients to give a taste of the following day’s port.

Entertainment on Costa ships includes acrobats, musicals, comedians, and more. Further, pools, mini-golf, and other outdoor activities keep guests busy. Of course, there is a gym, even an outdoors one. For those interested in wellness, there are classes, beauty treatments, and more.

This cruise line boasts beautiful ships featuring Swarovski crystal staircases. A relative newcomer to the US market, MSC Cruises attracts a diverse group of cruisers from North America and abroad. The ship interiors are stunning.

Additionally, these ships have upscale private areas with cabins and restaurants. Known as the Yacht Club, this exclusive area also has its own pool.

The entertainment on the ships features classical music, acrobats, and large productions shows. Outdoor areas with pools and hot tubs are popular with guests.

MSC sources their own goods for their shops rather than depending on the same vendor that other cruise lines use. One favorite is Il Venchi chocolate shop.

As a privately owned company, MSC is not beholden to shareholders. Often their cruise fares are quite attractive.

If that’s not enough, MSC cruisers can enjoy the newer Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, MSC’s private Bahamas island.

Known for its Free-Style concept of open dining, Norwegian Cruise Line and innovation go hand-in-hand. NCL was one of the first cruise lines to relax the dress code. Dress Up or Not nights happen a few times per cruise.

Unique to mainstream cruising, their American-flagged ship, Pride of America , sails the Hawaiian Islands round-trip from Honolulu. It lacks a casino, but saves the long and sometimes rough crossing from the West Coast of the USA.

The ship-within-a-ship concept on the newer NCL ships is a private retreat with its own dining, bars and lounges, and pool. Guests in The Haven can still enjoy the shows and public spaces on the ships, but can relax in the comfort of their own exclusive area on the ship as well.

Ships in the NCL fleet range from small to large. The smaller ships sail more exotic itineraries.

Entertainment on NCL ships includes Broadway-style shows, musical groups, video arcades, casinos, comedians, and performances like Howl at the Moon. Entertainment varies by ship.

Royal Caribbean competes with itself on the size of its ships. Its newest and largest ship, Icon of the Seas , just entered the market. Each new ship takes ideas to a new level.

The neighborhoods on the Oasis and Icon class ships each have a different character, and they are easy enough to navigate to find just the right spot for food and entertainment. On the newer ships, a suite neighborhood offers the ship-within-a-ship concept. Like other ships, this neighborhood has special amenities for guests. Exclusive dining and bars in addition to a private pool area are available to those residing in that neighborhood.

Although Royal Caribbean boasts the largest cruise ship on the seas, it also has several smaller ships in its fleet. Its smallest ship, Grandeur of the Seas, sails the Caribbean. Although smaller ships have fewer or smaller public venues, finding a variety of entertainment options is still possible.

As with many of the mainstream cruise lines, each class of ship is different, with different deck plans and options for various types of travelers.

Premium Cruise Lines and Their Amenities

As cruisers age out of these top deck attractions, become empty nesters, or simply want a more relaxing cruise atmosphere, the premium cruise lines provide many options.

Many of the cruisers on these ships are well-traveled. Their interest lies more in the areas that they visit rather than in the high energy options found on the mainstream cruise ships. The guests typically are a bit older than on mainstream cruises, but families are always welcome.

Though, be aware that during certain times if there are not enough children on a particular sailing that the kids’ clubs may be either closed or have limited hours.

The emphasis on food and drink with chef-driven menus tempts the palates of premium-level cruisers. And the aesthetic of the ship creates the total experience.

These are the most popular premium cruise lines.

Celebrity Cruises

Disney cruise line, holland america line, princess cruises, virgin voyages.

With 16 ships that sail to all seven continents and visit 300 destinations, it’s easy to move up the Royal Caribbean ladder to this premium cruise line. The ships have a refined elegance without being stuffy.

Each class of ship features something different, so you have the choice of sticking with the atmosphere you love or trying out a different class of ship. Think comfortable spaces, a relaxed ambiance, yet with plenty of entertainment options and even something for families.

Camp at Sea explores S.T.E.M. topics appropriate for kids. Art, Culinary, and Recreation complement the S.T.E.M. program and keep kids engaged.

Ships in the newer Edge Class feature the ship-within-a-ship concept, The Retreat. Solstice Class lures guests to relax at their Lawn Club and enjoy a glassmaking demonstration.

If you’re considering a Celebrity cruise, keep in mind these tips and tricks .

Known for its British atmosphere, Cunard offers ballroom dancing and tea time with white-gloved service. Cruisers may choose from different classes of staterooms, with the Grills appealing to those seeking a more exclusive and proper area.

The highlights in the Cunard fleet of its soon-to-be four ships, include well-stocked libraries including the largest library at sea and regular crossings on the Atlantic. The Queen Mary 2 was designed to do the crossing and even includes pet kennels for your furry friends.

Cunard keeps traditions alive with the black tie formal nights. And how about trying your hand at fencing?

Disney hardly needs any introduction. Its fans know every detail about Disney and its characters. Disney attracts fans of all ages including childless cruisers. “Where Magic Meets the Sea” sets the stage for Disney cruises with each ship having a different focus.

Guests may choose their favorite movies or characters and choose the ship that is right for them. And speaking of characters, Disney fans have multiple options for joining their favorite stars on one of their soon-to-be six ships. Disney Wish and Disney Treasure (debuting in December) feature several new amenities for the brand including the first Disney attraction at sea, the AquaMouse.

If you’re planning a Disney cruise, you’ll want to keep in mind these tips and tricks .

Having recently celebrated its 150 th year of cruising, Holland America (HAL) now celebrates over 75 years of cruising Alaska. If Alaska is on your bucket list, you will appreciate that Holland America enjoys prime slots for sailing in Glacier Bay National Park.

Alaska isn’t the only itinerary that HAL sails. You will find them sailing all over the world. And if music is your passion, HAL will certainly keep you entertained.

Although some think that HAL attracts older people (that is true!), they also cater to multi-generational families. With activities for the kids as well as for their parents and grandparents, the entire family can explore the many activities on the HAL ships.

Music isn’t the only highlight on HAL cruises. The culinary council ensures that guests have plenty of dining options, including restaurants by Rudi Sodamin. Additionally, curated menus feature favorites of other members of the culinary council.

While Alaska offers many longer itineraries that deviate from the typical seven-day cruises that mainstream ships sail, Holland America’s smaller ships venture into lesser-known ports as well.

Another cruise line choice that has been sailing Alaska for a long time, Princess Cruises also is at the top of the list for the coveted spots into Glacier Bay National Park. They also have many lodges throughout Alaska for land tours combined with their Alaska sailings.

Alaska isn’t the only itinerary that Princess ships visit. They offer longer itineraries that take cruisers off-the-beaten-path. How refreshing it is to be the only ship in a port rather than sharing it with thousands of passengers from other ships.

Princess features intimate shows, several dining choices with chef partnerships, and outdoor areas. Although more adults typically sail with Princess, they do have kids clubs as well.

Princess cruise ships also vary in size with the brand’s largest ship, Sun Princess , having just debuted in the Mediterranean. Sun Princess is a complete evolution for the brand, looking to appeal to more multigenerational groups.

Princess Cruises is also known for its MedallionClass experience. This wearable technology serves many purposes from opening your cabin door, to ordering food and drinks on demand, and much more.

A relative newcomer to the North American market, Virgin Voyages tried to turn the cruise experience upside down. Definitely not a traditional cruise, this adults-only cruise line features the unexpected.

Think drag shows, adult themed shows, and staterooms with lighting for any mood. Although initially marketed for the younger set, Virgin does attract guests of all ages.

Their flexible booking policies make Virgin especially attractive to those with ever-changing schedules.

With several specialty restaurants included in the fare, Virgin tempts its guests to enjoy new culinary experiences. Virgin truly focuses on trying new things.

Pop-up entertainment appeals to some Virgin cruisers, while others will opt for other activities. The outdoor areas have plenty of seating, dining options, and even an outdoor gym.

Virgin visits Bimini where the beach club welcomes cruisers. The staff engage with guests and also perform card tricks, magic, and whatever piques their interests. For a totally different and childless cruise experience, Virgin is worth a try.

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum from ocean cruising is river cruising.

Ideal for those who feel more comfortable with land always in view, river cruising brings guests close into cities full of history, food, and culture. River cruises sail slowly with scenic views and with little worry about seasickness.

Some of the riverboats even offer the option to charter, meaning family and friends can enjoy a private river cruise adventure.

Riverboats range in size from very small vessels that may carry just a handful of guests to larger boats that carry up to around 200 passengers. Like expedition and luxury cruises, the well-traveled guests come from a demographic that has both the time and money to travel.

While some of the river cruise lines do allow children, a minimum age must be met typically. Cruises designated as family-friendly offer activities for younger sailors, but there aren’t usually dedicated facilities.

When several riverboats visit the same town, it may be necessary to walk across the boats that have rafted up. Keep that in mind if you have any sort of disability.

Wherever you find a lengthy navigable river, you are likely to find a river cruise. Popular rivers in Europe include the Rhine, Seine, Duoro, Danube, and more. The Yangtze and Mekong are popular choices in Asia, while South America includes the Amazon with some of those cruises fitting into the expedition category.

In Egypt, the Nile is popular. Of course, the USA offers many waterways for river cruising: Mississippi, Missouri, Columbia, Snake, and Ohio to name just a few. The St. Lawrence Seaway in Canada is another waterway suitable for river cruising.

Some of the river cruises also sail along coasts, on the coastal waterways, or in other protected areas.

River Cruise Lines and Their Amenities

River cruise lines to try include: AmaWaterways, American Cruise Lines, Avalon, CroisiEurope, Emerald, and Viking. At the luxury end are Riverside (boats acquired from Crystal), Riviera, Scenic, Tauck, and Uniworld. Even Disney offers trips on riverboats.

The small capacity of riverboats is an amenity in itself. Many riverboats offer bicycles on board. Further, there may be a chance to visit town with a chef and select food for a meal.

Riverboats usually dock right in town with easy access to shopping and other attractions. Some shore excursions may be included with options for adding others at additional cost.

Life onboard is relaxed with small-scale entertainment. Locals may be invited onboard to sing, dance, or do a demonstration.

Staterooms are of all different styles. Viking has a Scandinavian feel, while Uniworld has a much more formal décor.

Outdoor dining is often possible, but there are usually just a few dining options. Although, Riverside and Ultra-Luxury Scenic have more dining venues than other riverboats.

A rapidly growing segment of the cruise market, expedition cruises take guests to remote areas around the world. Initially, you may think that expedition cruises are equated with cold destinations, but that is not the case. Expedition cruises sail in many parts of the world.

Like luxury cruises, expedition cruises use smaller ships, a necessity for cruising places that limit the number of passengers to be onshore at a time. Small ships reach spots that large ships can’t safely navigate. As with the other type of cruises, there are many options and styles of expedition cruising.

Ships sailing in icy destinations feature designs that optimize their ability to safely navigate frozen waters. Additionally, many cruise lines sailing in cold weather destinations provide warm jackets to their guests.

The choices for sailing on an expedition cruise are many. Keep in mind that some tour operators have their own programs using expedition ships. Road Scholar, Tauck, G Adventures, Intrepid Travel, and others follow this model.

Popular Destinations

Expedition cruises explore many destinations on all seven continents. Antarctica , Africa,  the Arctic , Asia, Australia, Baja, Canada, the Galapagos, Alaska , and other off-the-beaten path destinations attract expedition cruises. Wherever history, wildlife, and nature abound, you will likely find an expedition cruise visiting an exotic destination.

Expedition Cruise Lines and Their Amenities

Expedition cruise lines include: Adventure Canada, Albatross, Atlas Ocean Voyages , Aqua Expeditions, Celebrity, HX (Hurtigruten), Lindblad, Ponant, Poseidon Expeditions, ProIceland, Quark, Scenic, Seabourn, Silversea, UnCruise, and Viking.

Expect to find a variety of naturalists and experts on board. Resources, like labs for citizen scientists, educational displays, and access to books on a variety of topics are typical. Further, entertainment will be more focused on enrichment.

Some expedition ships provide or rent gear to guests. Use of kayaks, SUPs, and other water sports equipment is often complimentary. Luxury expedition cruises might even include submarines or helicopters.

Many cruisers start with mainstream ships before moving on to luxury or ultra-luxury cruises. Typically, those who go on luxury cruises are in a slightly older demographic, but that is not saying that younger people and families don’t sail luxury brands. Luxury cruise ships often travel to more exotic destinations, visiting ports that are inaccessible to big ships.

Attention to detail and upgraded levels of service define luxury and ultra-luxury cruising. With many of the luxury cruises averaging one crew member per guest, “at your service” contributes to the guest experience. 

Fine dining in restaurants overseen by famous chefs, upscale wine, and attentive service similar to an upscale restaurant on land add to the exceptional culinary experience on the ships.

The ships are smaller with more intimate entertainment. Large theaters are rare, and some ships have no casinos. Entertainment is often self-directed. Libraries for reading, lectures for learning, and daily options for living in the moment resonate with the luxury cruiser.

Don’t expect roller coasters, zip lines, or waterparks. The pool and pool decks give the feel of an exclusive resort. While high-energy activities may be absent from a luxury ship, it’s still possible to participate in activities like shuffleboard, pickle ball, or other social activities on a luxury cruise.

Although children are welcome on most luxury cruises, they, too, need to be self-directed. There are often not programs for them and few other children with whom they can socialize.

While the price tag might be higher, there are more inclusions as part of the cruise fare.

Luxury and ultra-luxury ships cruise the world. Smaller ships allow docking away from the larger mainstream ships. Not having to explore a destination with thousands of guests from big ships gives exclusiveness to luxury guests.

Luxury Cruise Lines and Their Amenities

Luxury cruise lines excel at service, fine dining, and a calmer, yet enjoyable style of cruising. Good cruise lines to enter into the luxury arena are: Azamara, Emerald, Oceania Cruises, Paul Gauguin, Viking, and Windstar Cruises.

Think of luxury cruise lines on steroids, and now you have the ultra-luxury cruises. Everything is taken to a higher level. Butlers, free room service, upscale dining, and premium wines may be included.

Included in the ultra-luxury sector are: Atlas Ocean Voyages, Crystal Cruises, Explora Journeys, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Ritz-Carlton, SeaDream Yacht Club, Seabourn, Scenic, and Silversea. These brands all compete for the ultra-luxury cruiser.

On luxury and ultra-luxury cruise lines, guests don’t need to feel obligated to choose between a plethora of activities on the daily schedule.

Further, air, transfers to the ships, all meals and beverages, and a daily shore excursion are perks of sailing on a luxury ship. Shore excursions may include special access to places without having to wait in line.

The public areas in the ship and the staterooms are similar to those of a 5-star hotel. In summary, service exceeds expectations when luxury cruising.

Themes and Affinity Groups

Alumni groups, sports groups, celebrities, musical groups, swingers, singles, naturists, meetings and incentives. These are just a few of the special themed groups that can charter part of the ship or the entire ship.

Actually, the swingers groups and naturists must charter the entire ship. You needn’t concern yourself with accidentally encountering cruisers from these two special-interest groups.

Are you looking for a group of like-minded people to sail with? There are various themed cruises available to book. From music-themed cruises, to Christmas Markets, to literature cruises, and even a Star Trek convention at sea, there’s something for every avid fan.

On the other hand, if you wish to avoid the annual convention of mimes or clowns, just do a Google search adding the group, your potential sailing date, and the name of your ship.

A cruise is a holiday where you travel by, and stay on, a ship or boat – usually a ship. There are many different types of cruise, which you can read into below. Cruises have a reputation for being more suited to older travellers but this isn’t necessarily the case; they can be fun for tourists of all ages, and are a great way to explore multiple destinations on one vacation (known as a multi-centre tip).

The different types of cruise are as follows:

Now lets take a deeper look at what each of these types of cruise are like-

A river cruise is, as the name suggests, a cruise taken down a particular river. Due to the fact that rivers are much smaller than seas and oceans, so too are river cruise ships. You travel along inland waterways, and there will be the chance to stop off at various city ports – you are also able to see a lot of scenery on river cruises as you will generally always have land directly to each side of you. This is very different to ocean cruises, where all you can see on ‘days at sea’ is an expanse of sparkling blue water .

A river cruise is favoured by those looking for a relaxing and slower-paced trip. These types of cruise are a huge part of the travel and tourism industry, with trips on the following rivers being particularly common:

• Mississippi
• Rhine 

You might also see river day cruises – these take place on small sections of river which typically flow through a city centre such as Chester, Amsterdam, Paris or Cairo!

An expedition cruise is one of the types of cruise aimed at adventurous travellers who want to do a lot more than simply relaxing while on a cruise. They again tend to be smaller ships than ocean liners, as they travel to more far-flung places. Should Be Cruising says that these ships also have shallower drafts than regular cruise ships, so they can access smaller inlets and shallow harbors.

There are so many activities available on expedition cruises. If you’re cruising in warmer waters you might go scuba diving, and if cruising in colder waters such as the Arctic, you might go trekking across the top of a glacier. Expedition cruises are all completely different – you might go on a historic expedition cruise where the focus is on history, or a nature cruise to look at plants or animals in different locations. Expedition cruise groups are smaller and more intimate. You’ll be with an expert guide, and you’ll come back having had some incredible experiences making memories that last a lifetime!

A mega cruise ship is one of the most popular types of cruise. These ships can typically accommodate 5000+ guests. These are the types of ships – and vacations – which will generally spring to mind when you hear the word ‘cruise’ – except they are the biggest of these typical cruise ships. They are ocean liners, usually 300+ metres long, weighing hundreds of thousands of tonnes! Currently, Icon of the Seas is the biggest cruise ship in the world, and some of the other biggest mega cruise ships are:

• Symphony of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)
• Harmony of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)
• Allure of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)
• Oasis of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)
• Mardi Gras (Carnival)
• Iona (P&O Cruises)
• AIDAnova (AIDA Cruises)
• Costa Smeralda (Costa Cruises)
• MSC Grandiosa (MSC Cruises)
• Spectrum of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)

These ships have an incredible amount of amenities on board. From cinemas to water slides to their very own Starbucks franchises, themed restaurants, libraries, go-karting tracks, theatres and so much more. Cruises on these ships tend to be 7-14 days although can be much longer. They visit typical holiday or tourist destinations with interesting things to see. You will be able to book excursions through the cruise line or take off on your own to explore the ports!

You’ll find these cruise ships have a lot of restaurants (most cruises are all inclusive ), multiple pools, and a lot of cabins as well as a LOT of crew members making sure everything runs smoothly. They have apps you can use to order food & drink, navigate the ship, book excursions, see what activities are taking place on board and more!

Yacht holidays ooze luxury – these types of cruise are associated with rich and elite people, such as celebrities and royalty, many of whom own or charter their own yacht and use it regularly. You might see yachts docked in places such as Puerto Banus in Marbella or St. Tropez in France – yachts are docked at marinas, which are small docks which have dedicated equipment specifically for smaller boats.

Yachts tend to carry around six passengers, with super yachts carrying up to 12. You don’t technically need a crew for a yacht either, although it is always helpful to have someone on board who knows what they’re doing to some extent!

This type of cruise is a subtype of other cruises – you can have luxury ocean cruises and luxury river cruises, as well as luxury yacht trips of course. But what makes a cruise luxury ? They tend to offer a much higher quality of service: private dining rooms, butlers, gourmet restaurants with world-class chefs, opulent decor, strict dress codes and more. As you’d imagine, they are a lot more expensive than other cruises! Cunard is probably the most famous luxury cruise company, alongside Regent and Seabourn. They travel to breathtaking locations in true comfort and style!

When it comes to fun, a themed cruise is the way to go. This type of cruise tends to occur mostly on ocean liners – for example, Disney even have their own cruise line offering ocean cruises entirely themed around Disney movies and characters. From singing the movie soundtracks at the incredible evening shows to relaxing on Disney’s private island to fireworks at sea, you get the whole magical experience on a cruise ship.

It isn’t only Disney who offer themed cruises , however. There is a type of cruise for absolutely every niche, hobby, interest and so on. It is also important to distinguish between full-ship theme cruises, where a particular group or brand will charter the whole ship, so everyone will be on-board for the theme cruise, and partial-ship theme cruises. This is where the group would book a number of cabins and take over certain areas, such as a particular bar, deck space or a conference room.

An adventure cruise is very similar to an expedition cruise. One minor difference is that adventure cruises usually involve a level of physical activity – as opposed to just, perhaps, making observations as you might on an expedition cruise. With an adventure cruise, the main focus is on the off-vessel activities you take part in. This could be anything from kayaking to horse riding, snorkelling to even camping! 

A singles cruise is another popular sub- type of cruise. While many cruises have designated meet-ups for solo cruisers, there are also dedicated cruises for single people. Often these are aimed at older travellers – usually 50 and over. With no single supplement, and of course *everyone else* being single, it is ideal if you’re looking to go on a cruise to make new friends, find a new partner or just enjoy some you-time.

One of the most popular cruise lines offering the typical single cruise is Saga. Passengers can benefit from ‘Singles Mingle’ drink parties, cabin stewards, 24-hour room service, a nightly turndown service, an open seating arrangement and much more. A solo cruise is the perfect way to travel alone but never feel bored or lonely, and also to ensure you’re always safe and taken care of while exploring new places! A Guide To Navigating Types of Cruises

Cruising has come a long way…

Go back just a couple of decades and most people thought cruises were things that only retired elderly people and honeymooners did. Just watch the classic comedy “Out to Sea” with Walter Matthau & Jack Lemmon to see these old cruise stereotypes in action.

The cruising industry did a great job of shifting that mindset with a concerted and deliberate marketing effort plus making loads of changes to their ships to update them, improve the entertainment, and appeal more to families and a younger demographic. Bravo. Now today, if all you see are ads on TV, you might think that every cruise is just a party on the high seas complete with waterparks, rock-climbing walls and countless other treasures waiting to be explored!

While there are ships that fit that description, there are actually quite a few different types of cruises out there…and it’s definitely not a “one size fits all”.

So the question becomes, with so many cruising options, is there one for you? And if so, how on earth does one choose?

With that in mind, we thought we’d take a moment to give you all a quick overview of the types of cruises, the basic differences between them, and help you start thinking about which might be the best fit!

1. Large Ship Cruises

Also called “mass-market cruises” these are the big ones you usually think of. Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival, Holland America, Cunard, Princess, and even Disney fall into this category.

Naturally there’s even a ranking among these big lines – for example, Disney – while large – is kind of in a class all by itself which you might bucket Royal Caribbean with Carnival. Norwegian is somewhere in the middle, followed by Holland America and the Princess is kind of the cream of the mass-market cruise ship crop (behind Disney). This order is fairly objective with some people preferring one line to another, but by and large, they all have similar amenities, stateroom types, shore excursions, itineraries, and pricing.

That said, they are GREAT for families – no matter what age range your kids are in, there’s something for everyone on most of these lines. The one exception possibly being Holland America which doesn’t have quite as much to offer in terms of kids clubs, etc. so they are a great alternative for solo adults, couples, or older travelers.

There are always sales, specials, and last minute deals for the big lines on nearly every itinerary they offer. As you might imagine, Disney is the priciest of the bunch, but hey – it’s Disney. ????

2. Mid-Sized Luxury Cruise Ships

Mid-sized luxury cruise ships are exactly what it sounds like. They are focused more on a luxury experience and have scaled down size-wise to be not too big but not too small.

Examples of cruise lines that fall into this bucket would be  Azamara ,  Silversea ,  Oceania ,  Crystal ,  Regent Seven Seas ,  Seabourn , and  Viking Ocean .

The mid-sized ship are kind of the best of both worlds – you don’t get lost in the crowd, but you also feel like there’s plenty of variety. Being smaller ships averaging anywhere from 450 to 1,000-ish passengers, they generally aren’t geared for families with children, so you usually won’t encounter them. They also are starting to move from the bargain bin into a luxury feel and experience – better service, better food, more intimate experiences, and take more of an immersive approach to destinations.

One of the best things that kick in with the mid-sized luxury ships is their inclusiveness. They tend to have a lot more inclusions on the front-end in their fares. For example, most will include gratuities, drinks (alcoholic & otherwise), and even some include shore excursions.

Below is a quick overview of each of these lines…

3. Small Luxury Cruise Ships

Take a mid-sized luxury cruise, shrink it down, increase the crew-to-passenger ratio, and you’ll end up with a small luxury cruise.

These cruise lines include  Windstar ,  SeaDreams Yacht Club , Ponant, and Paul Gauguin. These ships generally hold between 150 and 400 passengers. Service levels are also amazing and they really focus on keeping a high crew-to-passenger ratio and finding ways to create an extraordinary experience. They also have a lot more included in their fares as well (similar to the mid-sized luxury category ships).

You kind of have to keep in mind that these ships ARE smaller which means you’re not going to get giant Broadway-caliber productions, but you’re generally spending so much more time doing things on-shore than on the ship, I’ve never found myself missing the bigger entertainment options.

What I’ve found with these cruises is that there’s more of a exclusive feel to them… It’s almost like a friend of a friend is a billionaire and invited you to take a cruise on their private yacht. Not a bad experience to settle into for a week or more!

4. Adventure / Expedition Cruise Ships

There are a few cruise lines that crossover into the Adventure or Expedition cruise category, and some that exclusively offer these types of experiences.

This type of cruise experience involves smaller ships generally and much more interactive, adventurous itineraries and remote destinations. The ships are smaller (200-ish vs. 2000 passengers) so, like the small luxury ships, are able to dock in smaller ports.

Cruise lines that play heavily in this space are  Lindblad Expeditions ,  Australis ,  Zegrahm , Quark, and  UnCruise Adventures . There are others, of course, but usually these are the companies that first come to mind. Other cruise lines that have begun offering a more up-scale expedition ships since generally the expedition space has always been a little more, shall we say, “rustic”. Now, you can jump onboard a Silversea Expedition ship (or Ponant or an Abercrombie & Kent package) to go out to Antarctica or the Galapagos, for example.

You’ll see a much heavier focus as well on education about your destination. So rather than trying to dazzle you with lounge music singers, they’ll offer lectures by some of the best naturalists or experts in the area you’re traveling to. Lindblad, for instance, partners with National Geographic, so it’s not usual to have a NatGeo photographer onboard to help you hone your wildlife and landscape photo shooting skills.

Being partial to adventure personally, expedition cruises are definitely be at the top of our list for the experience and about as close as one can get to feeling like a true explorer!

5. River Cruise Ships

Not really sure a river cruise needs an explanation! Thanks to Viking’s concerted marketing efforts a number of years ago, the world suddenly became aware of this really unique way of traveling through a country (or countries) without having to actually go out to sea.

The main river cruise lines we love are  AmaWaterways ,  Viking River ,  Uniworld , and  Avalon . There are also some expedition river cruises run by companies like   Aqua Expeditions .

The river cruise ships really are the smallest of the bunch with passenger counts ranging anywhere from super-intimate 40 to a comfortable 150-200. Similar to expedition cruises that way, they’re much smaller ships, but that’s primarily because they also navigate much smaller waters. Imagine a Princess cruise trying to make it down the Rhine. Yeah, that’s not going to happen!

One of fun things about river cruises is the theme approach a lot of them take. Food & Wine, Beer, Music, Art, History… Pick your favorite hobby, past time, or interest and there’s probably a river cruise for that!

There are different types of cruises for everyone, nearly everywhere there’s an ocean or river…

What’s your favorite cruise line? That’s a question I’m often asked when people discover I’ve spent the best part of 30 years writing about the cruise industry.

My answer is usually a semi-tongue-in-cheek ”whatever I’m sailing on.”

And come to think of it, that’s true. I enjoy each cruise, each ship, and each sea-going experience. Some more, some less, but I enjoy them all.

And, after 30 years, you’d think I’d become a bit jaded. “Jaded” is different from knowing what to expect, and the expectations are what keep me climbing back aboard another ship.

Types of Cruises – A Ship for Everyone

Basically, when you consider the different types of cruises, there is a ship out there for everyone. Whether you are on a tight budget or the sky’s the limit, whether you are looking for a weekend sailing or a round-the-world cruise; hope to gather the clan for a 50 th birthday or to celebrate a college graduation, you can find a ship that’s right for you.

Let’s first look at what vessels are available.

Carnival , Norwegian Cruise Lines , Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines offer three- and four-day sailings that are ideal for first-time cruisers, for young families, and for those on a budget. These are large ships with multiple dining venues, children’s programs, large showrooms, several pools and lots of bells and whistles.

In the middle of the market are lines that include Celebrity, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess and others. The majority of cruises are one-week long.

These lines offer offer all types of cruises…lovely new vessels, multi-national crews, fine dining options and amenities galore. Consider ships with ice skating rinks, rock climbing walls, bowling alleys and golf simulators.

European Culture and Cuisine

Two lines which bring European culture and cuisine to the North American market are Costa and MSC . Both Italian companies accent the Italian in décor and cuisine. Entertainment is multi-national and the lines, which both sail out of PortMiami, offer one-week, 10-day or two-week itineraries.

At the luxury end choose from Crystal for the wonderful big-ship lux experience or Seabourn, Silversea or Regent for a top-drawer cruise on a smaller vessel.

Another option might be a seven-day transatlantic crossing from New York or Southampton and across – a true majestic experience aboard Cunard Line’s Queen Mary2.

So now that you’ve a basic idea of what’s available, let’s talk about celebrating occasions aboard ship.

A Special Type of Cruises: Leave the On-Ship Planning to Others

Suppose Grandpa Joe is turning 75. Twenty or so family members who would want to be on hand for a celebration, enjoy being together and don’t want the hassle of “where are we going to eat,” “what are we doing today,” etc. will find a cruise celebration ideal.

Cruise lines will help with plans such as organizing a private cocktail party or specific tables in the dining room. Ships have babysitting services and children’s activities, (a kind of day camp goes to sea,) and everything to make the party memorable.

I did a crossing last summer on Queen Mary 2 with two women, and the newly minted college grad daughter of one of them. They’d flown to London, gone to Wimbledon and were coming home in style on QM2. All three enjoyed the experience.

A Fantastic Fortieth Anniversary

Types of cruises also include, naturally, those milestone anniversaries.

When my husband and I celebrated our 40 th anniversary we took our kids and grandkids for a weekend cruise aboard Carnival’s Fantasy. I think there were 11 of us and all had a good time. For our 50 th it was just the two of us and we wondered around the UK for a week or so, then flew to Monte Carlo where we boarded Crystal Serenity for a 10-day cruise in the Mediterranean. It was marvelous.

On the other hand, close friends celebrated their 50 th with 42 family members and friends and thought it was much better than anything they could have planned on land.

Romantic getaways, bachelor parties or girls’ getaways are other popular reasons to sail. In fact, Crystal Cruises has been chosen “America’s Best in Travel” in the luxury cruising category of the 2013 Women’s Choice Awards – the only award recognizing brands and companies recommended by women, to women.

As I write this, four friends of mine, women who are all single at this point in their lives and have played mah jongg weekly for 40 years, are on a week-long cruise. They’ve done this for many years, saving money each week, and left kids and husbands behind in earlier years. Now, three of the four women use motorized scooters to get around the ship, but they’ve never stopped cruising.

Simply, ask about types of cruises and you’ll find there is a cruise for everyone. Find a good travel agent and ask their advice, or venture online to individual cruise line websites, which offer all the information you may need. You won’t regret it.

Yes. There’s nothing like sailing out of ports, into ports, knowing someone will clean the room (twice daily,) meals are prepared, entertainment planned – and all while you’ve only unpacked once. Great way to travel!

When most people think of cruises, they think of Caribbean locales, fruity drinks, and cheesy shore excursions.

But that’s not all there is to cruises, believe it or not.

I’ve rounded up the best types of cruises to suit pretty much every travel type. Let’s get to it.

Vacation cruises

A vacation cruise is similar to a resort vacation where you don’t leave the resort grounds.

All entertainment, food, and drink is on board, with pit stops in warm and sunny destinations like Mexico or the Caribbean.

There’s usually a formal dinner, concerts, dance clubs, several pools, and shopping.

This is usually what comes to mind when most people think of cruises.

A lot of people shy away from cruises because they think all cruises are like vacation cruises.

And while there is a time and a place for these types of cruises, they aren’t for everyone or every vacation.

Read on for more cruises to consider for your next vacation.

Wilderness cruises

If you’re into outdoor and adventure travel, a wilderness cruise is a great way to see gorgeous, remote landscapes and interesting wildlife.

My top picks for wilderness cruises are Alaska, Antarctica, the Arctic, and the Galápagos Islands.

Alaskan cruises

Depending on the cruise line, cruises to Alaska typically tour only the southern coast.

Rather than hopping from beach to beach, Alaskan cruises bring you to gorgeous parks and seaside towns where you can partake in outdoor activities like fishing, kayaking, and dog sledding.

If you’re a fan of wildlife, you’ll likely enjoy the many opportunities to see whales, seals, bald eagles, bears, and other Alaskan wildlife.

While there are over a dozen cruise lines that include Alaska voyages, the cruise lines I recommend for Alaskan cruises are Celebrity Cruises, Discovery Voyages, Oceania Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Uncruise Adventures.

Antarctic Cruises

Aside from working at an Antarctic research station, one of the only other opportunities to see the 7th continent of Antarctica is via a cruise.

Antarctic cruises aren’t like most types of cruises.

The ships are typically smaller and the on and off-board activities are geared toward the outdoorsy and nature loving type.

Some Antarctic cruises are actually research ships, so if learning is your jam, an Antarctic cruise sounds right up your alley!

Arctic cruises

Arctic cruises are like Antarctic cruises in that they are usually small ships and catered to outdoorsy travelers.

Arctic cruises visit Northern European nations such as Greenland, Denmark, and Norway.

There are even Arctic cruises that include treks to the real North Pole, but they’ll cost you upwards of $30,000.

Galápagos Islands cruises

A Galápagos Islands cruise is on my ever-expanding travel bucket list.

On a Galápagos Islands cruise, you’ll visit these famed South American islands to explore beautiful landscapes and watch (from a respectable distance) wildlife that only exists in the Galapagos.

There are also some spots where you can snorkel and scuba dive if wildlife spotting or photography is too passive of an activity for you.

Disney cruises

If you’re a fan of Disney Parks, then you’ll love the Disney Cruise Line.

With over a dozen destinations and a host of special celebrations, such as Star Wars Day, chances are high that Disney Cruise Line will have the perfect itinerary for you.

Disney Cruise Line even owns a private island, Castaway Cay, in the Bahamas.

Aside from plenty of itinerary options, Disney’s cruise ships are filled with fun for families.

But don’t worry, these types of cruises aren’t just for families! There are plenty of areas on Disney’s cruise ships that are adults-only.

So if you’re looking for a sans-kid trip with the magical Disney amenities that you’re used to at the parks, you’ll have plenty to do without feeling like you’re the odd one out among families with kids.

Family cruises

Disney Cruise Line is a natural choice for a family cruise, but it’s certainly not the only family friendly cruise out there.

Carnival Cruise Lines has a seemingly endless list of options on board and offshore for families with kids.

They have poolside movies, mini golf, water slides, teen clubs, video game lounges, a Build-a-Bear Workshop, and Dr. Seuss themed activities.

Royal Caribbean Cruises has a partnership with Universal Orlando to create discounted vacation itineraries that include time at the Universal park and at sea.

Most Royal Caribbean cruises also include character breakfasts, movie screenings and other activities themed around Dreamworks movies, such as Shrek , Madagascar , and Kung Fu Panda .

Long term cruises

Got money and time? Spend several months or more at sea on a long-term cruise. And take me with you.

If you play your budget right, you might even be able to work out living aboard a long-term cruise ship without needing a permanent home on land.

This option is starting to become popular with retirees looking to travel the world at a slower pace.

Princess Cruises, Holland America Line and Seabourn Cruises are just a few cruise lines that offer long-term cruises of at least 3 months.

Oceania Cruises offers several long-term cruise itineraries per year, with the shortest around 4.5 months and the longest at 6 months.

Mundy Cruising’s frankensteined itinerary takes the cake, though, with a whopping 357 days.

As they are a travel agency, the itinerary is actually a mish-mash of several cruises back to back with the goal of hitting all 7 continents and seeing many of the world wonders and attractions.

Party cruises

Sometimes you just want to leave your worries behind and party ’til you can’t party no more on your vacation. Why not do it at sea?

These types of cruises aren’t for everyone, as there’s not too much quiet time, but they can be a ton of fun.

Love EDM? Add Holy Ship to your bucket list.

This party cruise sails out each year in early January for 4-5 days with a sick line up of the best EDM acts, like A-Trak, Chromeo, Kaskade, and Steve Aoki.

Holy Ship has proved so popular that a second itinerary has been added in recent years.

Sorta new to the party cruise scene is Inception at Sea, having first set sail in 2016.

The concept is similar to Holy Ship in that the cruise includes a music festival.

This party cruise, however, is designed to be a college Spring break destination, and typically sets sail in March.

If you’re avoiding Spring Breakers, the same folks who put on Inception at Sea also put on Groove Cruise, which sets sail from Miami and LA once a year.

River cruises

As the name suggests, river cruises set sail along a major river with stops along the riverbank.

River cruises generally carry a different vibe than ocean cruises.

The ships are smaller, the pace is slower, and land is always in sight.

River cruises are most popular in Europe, with routes along the Seine, Danube, and Rhine Rivers, among others.

Other popular routes outside of Europe include the Amazon River in South America, the Nile River in Egypt, and the Yangtze River in China.

Popular river cruise lines include Avalon Waterways, Disney Cruise Line, Uniworld and Viking River Cruises.

Semester at Sea

Semester at Sea is a study abroad program aboard a cruise ship.

Students enroll in college classes just like they do on campus, with mini courses at each port.

The program is run through Colorado State University, so students can earn credit toward their degree.

Not a college student? No problem!

Enroll as a lifelong learner or sign up for a job aboard the ship.

Jobs on Semester at Sea only last a semester, so they are great for a sabbatical, seasonal workers, or retirees.

Theme Cruises

Ocean crossings

Ocean crossings were common in the early days of ocean liners, which were used to transport both people and goods between countries. As passenger cruising began to evolve, crossings became as much about entertainment and vacationing as they were about getting from point A to point B.

Today, the only classic ocean liner that still runs a regular route is Cunard Line 's Queen Mary 2, which sails weeklong voyages between London and New York. To get a feel for what the grand old liner days were like, passengers can book passage on the vessel, which makes no port calls as it crosses the Atlantic Ocean.

Other ships might do crossings a couple of times a year, too, as they reposition to different regions at the start of each season. Some do offer a handful of port stops, but a large number of sea days is generally expected.

Big-ship cruises

The largest cruise ships afloat carry more than 9,000 people, including passengers and crew members. That can sound extremely intimidating to some people, particularly those who are partial to small-ship sailings.

I get it. You might not want more than a dozen decks to climb, loud music around every turn or tons of families with small children. However, you can't call yourself a true cruiser if you don't try a megaship at least once. These ships offer some pretty out-there diversions like laser tag, bungee trampolines and even roller coasters on their top decks. You need to try one out to truly know if the experience is or isn't for you; you might be surprised at your ability to avoid crowds.

Plus, with so much to do, there's something for just about everyone in terms of food and entertainment if you find yourself traveling with a group of friends or family. My recommendation? Try a ship in Royal Caribbean 's Freedom class or Oasis class . They offer the most options, and after you board, you simply won't believe you're on a ship.

Cruises to nowhere

Cruises to nowhere used to give travelers who weren't sure they'd like water-based vacations a chance to try one out with little commitment of time or money. The sailings — which would leave port, head out to sea for a day or two and then return to land — featured no port calls.

Now, due to stricter enforcement of the Passenger Vessel Services Act (which requires passenger ships larger than a certain size leaving from and returning to ports in the United States to call on at least one foreign port), most cruises to nowhere from the U.S. are no longer allowed .

For close-to-home sailings, look for one-way Pacific Coast voyages that sail between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco with no port stops. Or, head to another country, such as the United Kingdom, to try a cruise to nowhere.

Europe riverboat voyages

Sure, ocean cruises are fantastic, but so are river sailings. Their slower pace means that you can take in the scenery as you sail from destination to destination. Because you can always see land, river cruises are a solid option for those who worry they'd be upset to be in the middle of the ocean with only water in every direction.

Additionally, the ports are generally close enough to one another that you might stop in more than one per day, allowing for more in-depth exploration of the region you're visiting. (One of the most popular river cruise regions is the Rhine Gorge with its stunning castles.)

Food and local culture tend to be far more immersive than what you'd find during a port call on an oceangoing vessel. There are also fewer passengers on riverboats, which means a more favorable crew-to-guest ratio and, therefore, better service.

Expedition sailings

If you're starting to feel like you've been to all of the destinations mainstream cruise ships have to offer, or if you're an active traveler who's worried a cruise might be too sedentary, an expedition sailing could be for you.

Gone are the days when traveling to far-flung, isolated locales required passengers to sacrifice amenities. The newest ships on the market offer top-end luxury, and they transport cruisers with enough dough to places like the Arctic, Antarctica and Alaska.

Depending on the destination, you might see polar or grizzly bears, moose, Arctic foxes, seals, walruses, musk oxen, bald eagles, whales, local birds and a slew of other wildlife. Mix in some flora, calving glaciers, icebergs and ruins from early explorers, and you're in for a real treat.

US paddlewheeler sailings

Looking for a healthy dose of Americana with your next cruise? You'll find the slow pace and cultural immersion of a Europe river cruise right here in the U.S. with a sailing on a paddlewheeler like American Queen Voyages' American Queen or American Countess and American Cruise Lines ' American Heritage, American Splendor and others, which were recently refurbished .

As you glide along U.S. waterways like the Ohio and Mississippi, you'll experience small-town hospitality, local landmarks that you might not otherwise hear about and a history lesson you're not likely to forget any time soon.

The boats themselves are also fascinating, using paddlewheels for at least part of their propulsion. The practice evokes the early days of riverboating, and resident historians (called riverlorians) give lectures to teach about the areas the boats visit.

Back-to-back voyages

What's better than a vacation? Two vacations, of course. It's not uncommon for cruisers to take more than one sailing in a row on the same vessel. Most often, they book two consecutive voyages, known as a back-to-back trip.

The obvious draw here, besides bragging rights, is that a back-to-back extends your travels beyond just one cruise. Sail to the Eastern Caribbean one week and the Western the next, or turn a weeklong one-way sailing from Barcelona to Rome into a two-week round-trip visiting even more Mediterranean ports. Plus, you'll find yourself on board with a largely new group of fellow passengers after the first sailing ends, so it's a great way to meet twice the number of people.

If you go this route, be sure to ask to stay in the same cabin to avoid having to relocate all of your belongings between voyages. Know you might also be required to complete the muster drill again for the second leg of your trip.

World cruises

Accessible to only the wealthiest cruisers, world voyages (as you might have guessed) sail to destinations all over the globe in one long cruise. These itineraries usually stretch on for 100 days or more, hitting key ports across most of the seven continents.

It's also common for cruise lines to offer segments to passengers wishing only to do part of the longer voyage. This does open the option up to travelers with smaller budgets.

Most cruisers — even seasoned ones — have never taken a world cruise, and it's truly a feather in the cap of anyone who checks it off their list.

Masted-ship sailings

Want to feel like a true swashbuckler? Consider a cruise on a masted sailing ship. There are two distinct experiences you can choose from, depending on your cruise style and how involved you'd like to be in helping out on a working ship.

Star Clippers allows passengers to help raise and lower the sails and climb the mast up to the crow's nest. The accommodations are a little more spartan, more like true sailboat quarters, and entertainment is homespun with guest-participation shows and knot-tying lessons. The vessels in this line try to largely rely on wind for propulsion and spend up to 80% of the voyage under sail.

Meanwhile, Windstar Cruises has a handful of sailing vessels in its fleet, but the sails are more for show than for actual function. Although there's still a working crew to operate them, you'll feel less like a deckhand and more like a luxury cruise traveler.

Bahamas weekenders

Have you ever wondered what happened to those "free cruise" offers you used to get over the phone? Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line rebranded itself several times over to move away from the robocall stereotypes and is now partnering with Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville empire to operate Margaritaville at Sea-branded sailings .

The voyages last a minimum of two nights, sailing from the Port of Palm Beach in Florida to Freeport in the Bahamas and back. Travelers can also choose to disembark and stay at a land-based resort for a few days before cruising home.

This is one way to test out a short sailing, but keep in mind that it's designed to be a party atmosphere.

Bottom line

Don't knock what you haven't tried. With so many different types of cruises out there, you can't say cruising is not for you or that a certain type of sailing is your favorite if you haven't experienced the various options for yourself. Challenge yourself to try a vacation that might push you out of your comfort zone or be an entirely new type of sailing. You just might find yourself with a new favorite cruise type along the way.

Looking to relax? Into adventure? Bringing the kids? We've found the perfect cruise for you.

Cruises have become increasingly popular in recent years, with over 35 million passengers slated to set sail in 2024 alone: and it’s easy to see why. Not only do cruises make for a convenient vacation option—you just need to unpack once, and you’ll never have to travel too far from your stateroom (if at all) for your next meal or drink—but they also offer plenty of onboard activities and amenities to appease all types of travelers. Plus, cruises are available across various price points and lengths. Whether you prefer oceans or lakes, islands or cities, spotting wildlife or sitting on the beach (no wrong answers!), I’ve used my experience both as a cruiser and travel writer—I’ve covered the industry for nearly five years—to narrow down the best cruises from the U.S. to suit all individuals, regardless of travel style and personal preferences.

Best cruises for every type of traveler

1.  Best for wildlife spotting: Holland America’s Alaskan Explorer

It’s no secret that Alaska is home to some of the country’s best wildlife spotting opps, which is why I was psyched to embark on Holland America’s epic Alaskan Explorer sailing in August 2022. Both on and off the ship, I had the chance to spot many a whale—along with puffins, otters and other adorable and astonishing creatures that call the Last Frontier home. (If you’re lucky, you may even spot a bear or two!). Sailing roundtrip from Seattle, this bucket-list itinerary includes scenic cruising through the Puget Sound and Glacier Bay, along with stops in Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Sitka, Ketchikan, and last but not least, Victoria, British Columbia.

2.  Best for island lovers: Norwegian Cruise Line’s Hawaii Inter-Island

With its varied landscapes—ranging from majestic mountains and volcanoes to stunning beaches to lush tropical rainforests—a trip to Hawaii offers something for everyone. While you can island-hop around the Aloha State via ferry or plane, it’s not exactly seamless. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Hawaii Inter-Island , which sails year-round from Oahu to Kauai, takes the stress out of planning a multi-island Hawaiian vacation. Cruisers will have the incredible opportunity to visit four Hawaiian islands—Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai— without having to schlep their luggage, unpack or worry about booking inter-island flights or ferries. Overnights in Maui and Kauai are also included in the itinerary, allowing travelers to immerse themselves and uncover the beauty of each locale.

3.  Best for bachelorettes: Margaritaville at Sea’s Bahamas

For a sun- and fun-filled bachelorette party weekend, consider one of Margaritaville at Sea ’s two- or three-night Bahamas sailings, which make for the perfect party-centric weekend escape. On board, your group can sip tropical-inspired cocktails (Mai Tais, anyone?) at one of several bars and lounges while listening to Jimmy Buffett tunes, get pampered at the spa, play a round of pickleball, and so much more. It’s worth noting that the line currently only has one ship, Margaritaville at Sea Paradise, which sails out of Palm Beach; however, the line’s second ship, Margaritaville at Sea Islander, which will debut in June 2024, will sail from Tampa. Bonus: The line offers special bachelorette and girls getaway packages, which include access to the best available fares, group discounts, and even a dedicated concierge to take the hassle out of trip planning.

4.  Best for families with young kids: Disney Cruise Line’s Bahamian Cruise

Character meet-and-greets, drinking and dining venues, obstacle courses, and top-notch performances: Find all this and more aboard Disney Wish , which made its grand debut in 2022. The ship’s three-night Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral (Orlando) visits Disney’s idyllic private island, Castaway Cay, known for its white-sand beaches and stunningly clear turquoise waters—and, if you’re lucky, you may even spot beloved Disney characters!

The onboard experience is just as spectacular: Little ones can live out their Disney dreams at the “Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure” culinary experiences, while more casual—albeit just as fun—eateries include Mickey’s Smokestack Barbecue, Donald’s Cantina, Daisy’s Pizza Pies, Goofy’s Grill and Sweet Minnie’s Ice Cream. The kids' programming is, as you can imagine, equally top-notch: Children can train alongside superheroes, battle it out with Marvel villains, embark on an epic interactive Star Wars adventure, and live out their dreams as a Walt Disney Imagineer, go crafting in Rapunzel’s Art Studio, and (so much) more.

5.  Best for families of all ages: Royal Caribbean's Weekend Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is best known for its show-stopping onboard entertainment offerings (think: 10-story dry slides, dueling waterslides, ziplining, carousels, surfing and skydiving simulators and escape rooms) and a seemingly endless amount of bars and restaurants. As such, this mega-ship line is ideal for families of all ages—picky eaters included!

While the kids are at play, grown-ups can bask in the sun from the adults-only Solarium, where I spent most of my time on board my Caribbean cruise. Royal Caribbean offers several weekend Caribbean itineraries that cruise roundtrip from major cities like Miami, Galveston, Los Angeles and Orlando (Port Canaveral); however, I recommend opting for one that includes a port of call in CocoCay, the cruise line’s private island paradise in the Bahamas that boasts its own waterpark along with thrill-seeking activities like ziplining and helium balloon ride.

6.  Best for beach lovers: MSC Cruises’ Bermuda

Bermuda is best known for its beautiful pink-hued stretches of sand, which pop perfectly against the clear blue waters. With that in mind, the idyllic isle is ideal for beach lovers. The best way to get there and experience the dynamic island? By booking MSC Cruises ’ six- or seven-night Bermuda itineraries. Passengers will sail aboard the massive MSC MeraViglia, which conveniently cruises to and from Brooklyn. The dazzling ship is complete with a two-deck promenade, oceanview lounge areas, an amusement area and an outdoor water park.

7.  Best luxury: Crystal Cruises' Miami to San Diego

The luxury line Crystal was recently relaunched this past summer following a multimillion-dollar refurbishment across two ships, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. Its 16-night Miami to San Diego itinerary stops in Georgetown, Grand Cayman; Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama (where it’ll cross the world-famous Panama Canal); Quepos, Costa Rica; and Alcapoco and Cabo in Mexico. On board, guests can enjoy gourmet drinking and dining options—including the first and only Nobu restaurant at sea (I had the chance to preview the cuisine this summer and was blown away by the sushi, sashimi and, of course, the chef’s signature miso black cod)—along with personal butler service and contemporary oceanview staterooms and suites. Wellness seekers will especially enjoy the Aurora Spa, where services run the gamut from acupuncture and IV treatments to salt scrubs and hot stone massages.

8.  Best budget: Carnival’s Baja Mexico

Carnival’s motto is “Choose Fun,” and that’s precisely what you’ll find on any of its 26 ships cruising the world. The wallet-friendly cruise line is a favorite among budget-conscious travelers craving a fun vacation that won’t necessarily break the bank. The line’s f our-day Mexico itinerary aboard Radiance of the Seas, which cruises roundtrip from Los Angeles and stops in Catalina Island and Ensenada, packs plenty of added value. The standard cruise fare (from $234 per person) includes access to over ten restaurants—plus ample bars and lounges—and dozens of entertainment offerings (think: deck parties, game shows, trivia contests, outdoor sports activities, pools and hot tubs, karaoke, musical performances, stand-up comedy and more). So, what’re you waiting for?

9.  Best all-inclusive: Viking Expedition Cruises’ Great Lakes Collection

Viking is known for its adults-only, all-inclusive river, ocean and expedition cruises. As you can guess by its name, the 15-day Great Lakes Collection sailing—which cruises from Toronto, Canada to Duluth, Minnesota—takes adventure-seeking cruisers on an epic journey around all five majestic Great Lakes. Travelers will sail aboard the sleek Scandanivian-inspired Viking Octantis, which features all-balcony staterooms, cruising the Welland Canal, Niagara Falls, Cleveland, Michigan (Detroit, Alpena, Mackinac Island), Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, and a handful of Ontario hotspots (Georgian Bay, Silver Inlet, Thunder Bay).

While fares are pricy (from $13,995 per person), they are all-inclusive, folding in one shore excursion in each port of call, Wi-Fi, beverages (bottled water, beer, wine and soft drinks), taxes and fees, spa access, 24-hour room service and more.

10.  Best adults-only: Virgin Voyages’ Fire & Sunset Soiree

Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages is one of the newest—and most innovative—cruise lines out there. The adults-only line has done away with buffets, instead offering 20-plus fun, free and flavorful food concepts (think: Korean BBQ at Gunbae, tacos and tequila at the ‘gram-worthy Pink Agave and ice cream at the cheekily named Lick Me Till… Ice Cream). With all this in mind, it’s no surprise that the line is a favorite amongst foodies. The party-centric onboard experience comprises nightclubs, tattoo parlors and risque entertainment (cabaret performances, acrobatics shows, DJs and the like). Also, do yourself a favor and upgrade to a suite to enjoy exclusive access to Richard’s Rooftop, a swanky members-only outdoor space for partying and sipping cocktails in style.

While you can’t go wrong with any of the itineraries, I’m especially partial to the four-night Fire & Sunset Soiree sailing, which sails roundtrip from Miami and calls on Key West and Bimini, where the line has its own buzzy beach club.

I’ve been on Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, so I have first-hand experience on how each cruise line’s amenities, activities, entertainment, food and more. You’ll find even more activities to do with the family at their private island, Coco Cay. It’s home to one of the tallest water slides in North America, as well as a huge wave pool, expansive beaches and more. As for the food, the cruise line prides itself on buffet style at the Windjammer, specialty restaurants and complimentary favorites (like Loco Fresh, Sorrento’s Pizza and Park Cafe). If you’re looking for a table service, Royal Caribbean offers kids’ menu at their main dining halls, featuring pizza, spaghetti and chicken tenders.

3. Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival is known for being the most entertaining and party-filled of the bunch. Whichever of their 26 ships you set out on, the cruise line is all about having a good time. My first cruise (along with my 80-year-old grandmother) was on a Carnival. And we all had a blast. The company prides itself for having activities and amenities for every generation through dance parties, trivia and live performances. 

Each ship (yep, all 26) have Camp Ocean, a program broken down into Penguins (2 to 5), Stingrays (6 to 8) and Sharks (9 to 11). Each group can experience a host of activities. Some ships also have Seuss at Sea, where the iconic book characters come to life through character breakfasts, story time and a fun parade. Depending on the Carnival ship, the older kids can try out the Sky Zone (indoor trampoline park), catch a movie at the IMAX theater, experience the ropes course or hang out in their very own Club O2 or Circle “C”. Other amenities the kiddos will just love? Build-A-Bear Workshop, NASA-inspired activities, Thrill Theater and the first ever roller coaster at sea. FYI: Carnival currently has a Night Owls program, where you can leave your kids under 11 as late as 1 a.m, so you can enjoy a bit of nightlife on vacation. 

When it comes to dining, parents can rest assured that Carnival has you covered. Multiple dining venues have kids’ menus, featuring everything from chicken nuggets to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Plus, the ships have complimentary all-you-can-eat pizza and soft serve that’s available through the wee hours.

If you have older kids, Norwegian may be the best cruise line for your family. They have a ton of amenities for all ages. Zoom around the largest race track at sea, immerse yourself at the high-tech Galaxy Pavilion or take a plunge on the water slides. I had the chance to check out their latest ship, Norwegian Prima, which has two drop slides, a duo waterslide and a huge sports area (with mini golf, pickleball court, ping pong and more).

They also have programs for each age group, including the Splash Academy (3 to 12) and Entourage (13 to 17). As for the Guppies Program (6 months to 4), parents are required to stay with their child and enjoy the amenities together. However, Norwegian does offer group babysitting during the evenings for parents to enjoy a child-free dinner. 

While I love all the amenities, the food options were superb. They have both specialty (where kids under 12 can eat for free) and a complimentary buffet where even the pickiest eater of the fam will find something to enjoy. Aside from the buffet and 24-hour spots, newer ships offer the Indulge Food Hall. They are set up like a food market, where you can order from any station and have it all brought right to your seat. It was a great experience trying out new dishes and having a family-style meal.

From Norway, Greece or Rome, MSC is the best cruise line for families that want to take their young explorers out to the open sea—and this one has a ton of amenities to keep them busy in the meantime. Whether you want to try your hand at zip lining or prefer staying on the ground and playing bowling, grab yourself a MSC Fun Pass to try out these activities throughout your trip. All the ships also show Broadway-level shows, live music and immersive performances that will even have your teen engaged in the theatrics. 

You’ll also find five different clubs on the ship, Baby Club (0-3), Mini Club (3-6), Junior Club (7-11), Young Club (11-14) and the Teen Club (15-17). They vary depending on the age group, but some highlights include sports competitions, dance parties, karaoke and more. There are also additional services for your babies, including MSC Baby Time, MSC Baby Care Service and the MSC and Chicco. FYI: MSC has their own baby laundry service, so you don’t have to worry about cleaning out those stains once you get home. 

At MSC, dining is elevated to give kids just as amazing (and sometimes luxe) food options as the adults. Assessed by nutritionists, the menu features fun dishes for all ages, including babies from 6 to 12 months. The buffets each have a Kids’ Corner and all the specialty restaurants have a menu, so your kiddo can find a meal that they’ll like.

It's very sophisticated and sleek (no giant plastic water slides here), but there's still a ton for big kids and teens to do: shows to see, one million pools to lounge at, and destinations like Bahamas, Aruba and St. Maarten. There are also various ‘Camp at Sea’ options to keep kids entertained all day long. But the best part is knowing you can let your kids go off by themselves, but they can never get too far.” 

Speaking of Camp at Sea, this entertainment center is home to over 500 activities for kids, including arts and crafts, culinary, sport competitions and STEM-based activities. It’s broken down by Shipmates (3-5), Cadets (6-9) and Captains (10 -12). On the flip side, the Teen Club offers different classes, competitions and parties throughout the day. Luckily for them, they have the freedom to leave whenever they want—although the dedicated space for them is worth checking out.  

Kids can try out the buffet or main dining room to get everything from grilled cheese sandwiches to a mini margarita pizza. MSC also offers in-room dining menus in case your kiddo gets a little restless at the dinner table. Plus, the cruise line is especially loved for being sensory- and autism-friendly, offering a wide range of services like priority checking, Camp at Sea flexible grouping and more.

And let the grandparents join in on the fun through educational excursions partnered with Discovery and Animal Planet, as well as splash zones, backyard games and yes, a kid-friendly bar with sweet mocktails. The cruise line also has their very own mascot, Stanley, who spends his time all over the ship to play games, take photos and interact with guests. 

Get the kids set up with one of the on-ship Camp Discovery programs including The Treehouse (3-7), The Lodge (8-12) and The Beach House (13-17). In partnership with Discovery, your kids will have immersive hands-on activities, sports competitions, dance classes, movie nights and science programs. It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. Oceania Cruises’ Vista

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. Silversea’s Silver Nova

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. All-inclusive resort or cruise – which is best?

“Club Tropicana, drinks are free… Fun and sunshine, there’s enough for everyone,” so sang George Michael in Wham!’s famous 1980s paean to the nascent all-inclusive. In the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, ‘free’ booze and no bill sounded and looked – if you were anywhere near a pool in Ibiza with George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley – like holiday utopia. 

Drinks weren’t really free, but the idea that you could pay up-front to eat and imbibe, and be assured that you wouldn’t be presented with a terrifying bill at the end, was a novel concept, particularly for budget-conscious families and sun-seeking partygoers. 

It still offers considerable appeal in our cash-strapped times, which may explain why all-inclusives have had something of a renaissance. Cruising offers similar peace of mind and plenty to do with kids clubs, waterslides and Disney princesses on board – though alcohol isn’t always free. During both types of holiday, the entertainment comes to you and you’ll never have to flinch at the prices on the menu. 

But which type of holiday is best? Our writer put them both to the test.

All-inclusive

Club Med founders Gilbert Trigano and Gérard Blitz, who dreamt up the all-inclusive concept in the 1950s, had beaches and sunshine in mind. But skiers also favoured the all-in pricing model. Europe’s slopes were a win-win for the brand, which opened its first Alpine village at Leysin in Switzerland in 1956 ( clubmed.co.uk ).

Traditional sunshine strongholds Mexico and the Caribbean – where Butch Stewart picked up the mantel with his Sandals brand – still account for a big slice of the all-inclusive pie, but the net has spread further to include Cuba, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, Montenegro, Cape Verde and the Azores. Further afield there are all-inclusive resorts in Kenya, Thailand (mostly Phuket) and the Maldives and Mauritius. Turkish-owned Rixos ( rixos.com ) has recently opened resorts in Qatar and Doha, while Tui ( tui.co.uk ) and First Choice ( firstchoice.co.uk ) offer several resorts in Costa Rica. 

Cruise 

An average week or 10-day ocean cruise can tick-off several different destinations in one country, or across several countries in one trip. If you have a bit longer, it can take you round the world. Three-month world cruise itineraries cross continents, sail several seas and oceans, visit scores of capital cities and offer hundreds of excursion opportunities. 

And let’s not forget off-grid but accessible by water destinations such as the Galapagos, the Pitcairn Islands and Antarctica. River cruises follow the course of most navigable rivers, from the Amazon to the Zambezi. The Mekong, the Mississippi and the Ganges are among their more adventurous destinations. 

Whether beach or mountain-based, most all-inclusive resorts feature an activities element. Sandals comes up trumps, with free scuba at its Caribbean dive resorts and multiple rounds of golf and green fees at top courses in Jamaica, St Lucia and the Bahamas. 

Meanwhile, guests at Rixos resorts in Turkey have free daily access to The Land of the Legends Theme Park in Antalya – which means big savings in peak periods. This Easter, there are also egg hunts as well as giant egg-painting: a week at Premium Tekirova costs from £2,390 for four adults and two children, departing on March 30.

Watersports not your bag? Ikos Oceania in Halkidiki can provide a Tesla Model 3 at no extra cost for one day’s exploration as well as a culture pass to local museums. At Ikos resorts ( ikosresorts.com ), spa access is free between 8am to 8pm. 

If you’re after more than a typical beach holiday, check the activities part of a hotel website to find out what’s included. The adults-only Sanctuary Cap Cana ( sanctuarycapcana.com ) in the Dominican Republic offers Spanish classes and, at the House of Aia on Mexico’s Riviera Maya ( thehouseofaia.com ), a ‘personal growth’ programme includes 20 classes, ceremonies and rituals from visiting guides.

If you have adventurous teens in tow, the US offers some interesting options. At the historic Castle Hot Springs in Arizona ( castlehotsprings.com ) there’s axe-throwing, cruiser bikes, geothermal hot springs and creekside hammocks for lazing in, while, further north in scenic Wyoming, Scott Dunn has stays at Brush Creek Ranch, set in 30,000 acres of sage-bush prairie where you can ride, fish or take to the landscape by ATV ( scottdunn.com ).

With distractions ranging from rock-climbing walls and ropes courses to simulated surfing, via encounters with Star Wars, Marvel and Disney Pixar characters, cruising sets a high bar for activities. And on land, there are excursions – sometimes included – for every type of passenger. 

It’s not just families who benefit. Swan Hellenic ( swanhellenic.com ) has teamed up with Deepak Chopra to offer wellbeing voyages, while adult-only ships offer films under the stars or in theatres, lectures from wildlife experts and historians, opportunities for citizen science, celebrity speakers, casinos and activities ranging from dance lessons to art and photography classes. Virgin ( virginvoyages.com ) also puts on DJ sets and pool and dance parties. And let’s not forget the main event – a new place to explore every day.

Newer resorts have really lifted the bar. At its properties along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, Rixos rolls out the red carpet for families with a Rixy Kids Club that has cooking and pottery lessons as well as football and dance academies. At Rixos Sungate, where the kids’ club is set around a splash park in a forest, children can learn to code using Lego robotics.

At Ikos Resorts’ collection of luxury properties in Spain and Greece, kids’ clubs are run in line with UK Ofsted standards. Meanwhile, Tui’s family-friendly resorts come with kids’ clubs and a seven-day line-up of activities including creative sessions. Mini Club Med offers trapeze lessons, introductory water-skiing, horse-riding, cooking classes, games and nature discovery activities. For older kids (11-17), there’s film design, DJ sessions and dedicated areas in which to hang out. 

If you’re travelling with very small children or have ambitious activities in mind, check the small print: like lots of childcare for babies and toddlers, Petit Club Med and Baby Club Med both cost extra. Motorised water sports often incur a fee at all-inclusives while some resorts impose limits on the number of windsurfing or other tutored lessons.

Cruise ships do a stellar job when it comes to children’s clubs, with all ages well catered for. Most resort ships divide clubs into four age groups and some, including P&O Cruises ( pocruises.com ), offer free babysitting. Royal Caribbean ( royalcaribbean.com ) has an adventure science lab for budding junior scientists as well as baby and tots programmes for those aged six to 36 months. Celebrity Cruises has a STEM at Sea partnership with The Frost Science Museum (Equinox and Edge-class ships; celebritycruises.com ).

P&O Cruises is particularly well set up for those with kids in tow, with round-the-clock children’s clubs on its family-friendly ships and family-oriented shore excursions. MSC Cruises ( msccruises.co.uk ) has baby, mini, junior, young and teen clubs. The latter offers Xbox and PS4 tournaments, a Drone Academy, flash mobs and dance offs. Disney Dream ( disneycruise.disney.go.com ) has some imaginative offerings too, including the Jedi Training Academy and the opportunity to hang out with characters from the Toy Story trilogy.

You get what you pay for. If that’s sun and sea and a good four-star family resort, expect two or three bars and a standard buffet: a week at the Iberostar Bellevue in Montenegro costs £1,562 in mid-May ( iberostar.com ). Pay a bit more and you’ll be rewarded with more imaginative menus. At Ikos Porto Petro in Majorca, five à la carte restaurants serve meals inspired by Michelin-starred chefs (from £2,470pp with Sovereign; sovereign.com ).

Ikos also has curated “dine out” programmes that encourage guests to eat at local restaurants – including a rustic tapas joint in Estepona, an agriturismo in Ibiza and a buzzy beachfront spot in Marbella. Sandals ( sandals.co.uk ) has similar in Curaçao and Nassau. Caribbean all-inclusives generally offer three or four restaurants – and maybe a pop-up beach venue or barbecue night.

Think cruise, think buffet, right? Wrong. Standards are high, with new ships offering a plethora of cuisines, dining styles and venues along with healthy options and dietary alternatives. You’re as likely to find vegan muffins and bee-pollen at the breakfast buffet as a Full English. 

Silversea and Virgin have ditched the buffet altogether. Partnerships with chefs including Marco Pierre White and Eric Lanlard (P&O Cruises), Relais & Chateau (Silversea; silversea.com ), Jacques Pepin (Holland America Line; hollandamerica.com ) and Thomas Keller (Seabourn; seabourn.com ) have also made a difference. Crystal ( crystalcruises.com ) has a Japanese restaurant masterminded by Nobu while wine presenter Olly Smith helms the Glasshouse on some P&O ships. 

Silversea, Holland America Line and Oceania ( oceaniacruises.com ) are highly regarded among foodies and Regent Seven Seas ( rssc.com ) offers some stylish settings while Celebrity’s newer ships have roof-top gardens and over-the-sea dining. Fine dining can cost extra, depending on the ship, but expect to pay around £15 on top for three courses, which might just include one of the finest steaks you’ll ever eat. 

All-inclusive 

It’s a broad-brush summation but for something established, refined and ‘old-school’ romantic – think castaway beaches, palm fronds gently buffeted by warm trade winds, knock-out views and honeymoon havens – the Caribbean is a safe bet. The likes of Jumby Bay ( oetkercollection.com ), Spice Island Resort ( spiceislandbeachresort.com ), Necker ( virginlimitededition.com ) and Curtain Bluff ( curtainbluff.com ) are famous for a reason. 

The Maldives attracts a discerning international clientele while, in Europe, there are affordable package resorts where screaming kids are well tolerated. At the stylish new kids on the block (think Ikos and Grecotel Luxme; grecotel.com ), Poppy and Miles only scream in the privacy of the rooms however. 

Skiers are too busy skiing, too knackered or too busy partying to care about trifles like the vibe. If in doubt opt for Club Med, where most people speak French. 

It varies enormously across ships. River ships are tranquil, geared to sightseeing and generally follow an up-early and early-to-bed routine. Large resort ships can feel like theme parks, with entertainment into the wee hours; smaller ships go out of their way to leave passengers alone and provide impressive libraries and spaces for quiet contemplation. Viking ( vikingcruises.co.uk ), Silversea and Seabourn excel at this. Then there are the tall ships such as Sea Cloud ( seacloud.com ) and those in the Star Clipper fleet ( starclippercruises.co.uk ), where you’ll spend most of your time on deck watching the wind make the sails dance. 

Some liners take a ship-within-a-ship approach, with exclusive areas, pools and services – at a cost. MSC has the Yacht Club while Norwegian Cruise Line ( ncl.com ), Royal Caribbean and P&O have premium areas with pools and separate menus. Cunard ( cunard.com ) has the Grills Suites. 

If you’re after a more intimate, house-party atmosphere (complete with Surrey types, ex-boat owners and ‘non-cruisers’), opt for a yacht-style cruise ship from Ponant ( uk.ponant.com ), SeaDream ( seadream.com ), Scenic Eclipse ( scenic.co.uk ) or one of a handful of Windstar ships ( windstarcruises.com ).

Hidden costs All-inclusive

Do question the headline price, especially if booking via a third party. In January 2024, a Which? survey of 2,000 holidaymakers revealed key omissions from some operators, including soft drinks. Those who booked with the cheapest provider, lastminute.com , were forking out an extra £367 per week on average for extras. 

Operators take different approaches to inclusions. BA Holidays says: “Expect your holiday to include flights and accommodation, all three meals and snacks in between. Drinks are included too but expect house wine and local spirits unless otherwise stated.” EasyJet’s small print states: “What’s included in the all-inclusive package varies vastly between hotels. When booking your holiday be sure to look at the board description.”

Premium restaurants often cost more, but at the Oaks IBN Battuta in Dubai for example (where a week costs from £989pp through loveholidays.com ) the price includes à la carte restaurants and in-room breakfast. In all cases the two-clicks-away small print was clear. Read it. If in doubt, use the chat function, talk to a travel agent or pick up the phone.

All cruises include accommodation, dining, entertainment and access to pools and the other fun facilities, but Wi-Fi, drinks – alcohol and soda – and tips and room service might not be included. Tips are automatically added to cruise bills on a per passenger, per day basis. Expect to pay for service on spa and beauty treatments and bar drinks.

If you plan on drinking every day, pay for a drinks package (there are alcohol-free packages, too). Celebrity Cruises alcoholic drinks packages start at around £55 per day and Cunard’s soft drinks package starts from around £8.50 per day. Princess Cruises’ Wi-Fi, tips and drinks bundle costs £50pp per day ( princess.com ). 

Though you’ll still pay extra to tip for beauty services, some truly all-inclusive lines also include Wi-Fi, limitless premium drinks, a free mini-bar, most service fees and some excursions. Some also include airfares and a pre- or post-cruise hotel night. Take a look at Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Viking, Crystal and Seabourn. 

Which wins?

The all-inclusive concept has evolved – there’s no room for holiday snobbery in 2024. If all you want is a hassle-free place to relax by a pool or on the beach and forget about daily expenses, this is as good as it gets. But if you intend to stay longer than a week or haven’t been to the destination before, do some research. You may tire of the same sand, sun loungers and restaurants while venturing out to drink and dine makes little financial sense.

If you’ve a thirst for new places, a cruise offers all of the above plus the bonus of a new port of call most days – without the need to unpack. You’ll never get bored of the changing views and, as for feeling claustrophobic, you can disembark every day (though you don’t have to). Plenty of ships overnight in port, so you can dine ashore too. 

Cruises score bonus points for once-in-a-lifetime experiences too. Unless you own a boat, how else do you experience the romance of a dawn arrival in Manhattan, a sunset sail out of Sydney or your first glimpse of porpoising penguins in the Galapagos?

What Iran launched at Israel in its unprecedented attack, and what made it through the air defenses

Iran launched an unprecedented retaliatory attack on Israel over the weekend that included hundreds of missiles and drones launched primarily from its own soil, but also by Iran-backed groups in several other countries. Virtually everything fired at Israel was intercepted before entering the country's territory, according to the Israel Defense Forces, which reported "very little damage" from the attack.

A 7-year-old girl who was severely injured by shrapnel was the only known casualty in the attack. The child, from a Bedouin village in Israel's southern Negev desert, was still fighting for her life on Monday.

Iran's assault was designed to saturate Israeli and U.S. air defenses with drones and cruise missiles and clear the way for Iran's ballistic missiles, two U.S. officials told CBS News national security correspondent David Martin. It took several hours for the drones and missiles to travel toward Israel, and alerts began to sound across the country at about 2 a.m. local time on Sunday (7p.m. Eastern on Saturday).

The IDF said 170 drones were fired at Israel from Iran, and Israeli Air Force jets shot down dozens of them. U.S. aircraft operating from bases in Saudi Arabia and Jordan shot down between 70 and 80 of the drones, Martin reported.

Iran's state news agency, IRNA, said its domestically built Shahed 131 and 136 drones were used in the attack, the larger of which have a range of around 1,200 miles.

Kheibar Shekan ballistic missiles and Emad ballistic missiles were also used in the attack, according to IRNA. Kheibar Shekan missiles, unveiled in 2022, are one of Iran's most modern ballistic missiles, IRNA said, and the Emad missiles can carry a payload of 1,600 pounds. The state news agency said the cruise missiles used in the attack were Paveh missiles, which it said were capable of attacking targets from multiple directions by taking varied paths.

The IDF said none of the 170 drones launched by Iran crossed into Israeli territory, nor did any of the more than 30 cruise missiles fired by the Islamic republic.

Of 120 ballistic missiles fired at Israel from Iran, the U.S. officials told CBS News only five got through Israeli and U.S. air defenses and hit Israeli territory. One U.S. official told CBS News that roughly half of the ballistic missiles failed on launch or crashed in flight.

Four missiles did hit Israel's Nevatim Air Base, where Israeli F-35s are based, the U.S. officials said, adding that the base was likely Iran's primary target, as it is believed to have been an Israeli F-35 that carried out a deadly strike on an Iranian consulate in Syria's capital on April 1. Iran's weekend attack was its promised retaliation for that Israeli strike in Damascus, which killed seven officers from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including two generals.

One of the missiles hit near the base's runway, while two landed in open areas and "one more hit near a building, causing minor damage," IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said on Monday, adding that the building was still under construction. 

"All this damage will be repaired in the coming days," Hagari said. "This base is operating around the clock, it functioned during Operation 'Iron Shield' and today as well, from this base, aircraft took off to protect the skies of the State of Israel."

Another ballistic missile appeared to have been aimed at a radar site in northern Israel, but it missed its target, the U.S. officials told Martin.

The IDF said several other launches were made from Yemen and Iraq, but none of those weapons  crossed into Israeli territory. Dozens of rockets were also fired from Lebanon toward northern Israel early Sunday morning, and Israel carried out airstrikes against Hezbollah targets across Lebanon.
