As Ireland’s only island town, it goes (almost) without saying that one of the best ways to explore Enniskillen is by boat. Surrounded by 42 square miles of Island-studded water, Enniskillen is the perfect place to explore Lough Erne.

Some call it Ireland’s liquid gem. Others the Fermanagh Lakelands. Whatever name you give it, Lough Erne is home to stunning and unforgettable scenery. It is an ideal spot to grab some RnR and satisfy your craving for adventure.

Fortunately, you don’t need your own cruiser to set sail. There are loads of boat hire options for those hoping to explore Lough Erne.

Erne Boat Hire

On a sunny day, you’ll see plenty of these little red pleasure boats dotted around the Lough. The company has a small fleet of pleasure craft that can comfortably hold up to six adults (you can bring your pooch along too.)

The boats are self-drive and powered by a 6hp four-stroke petrol engine. They can be hired for a four-hour session and two daily sailing slots are available: 10.00am to 2.00pm and 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm.

You’ll set sail from the Regal Pass Jetty (situated next to the footbridge at Erneside shopping centre) and can explore the waterways around Devenish Island, the Ardhowen Theatre, and Killyhevlin Hotel.

Consider yourself an amateur captain? Tuition is provided before you depart.

How much does it cost?

Sessions can be booked online and cost £65. Buoyancy aids, maps, and fuel are provided.

Castle Archdale Boat Hire

Situated in Castle Archdale on Lower Lough Erne, this former RAF base offers the perfect starting point for those wanting to see some of the widest and most spectacular parts of the lough.

There are two styles of boat available for hire:

  • The 17ft Orkney 440 and 520 Day Boats, suitable for up to six people and powered by a 10hp Honda four-stroke engine.
  • The 19ft Orkney 590 Day Boat. This larger, more spacious boat holds eight people and is powered by a 20hp Honda four-stroke engine.

If water sports are more your thing, there are plenty of water toys available for hire too, including hydrobikes, water scooters, and canoes.

The six-person boat has a half-day rental price of £70 and a full-day rental price of £100.

If you’re opting for the eight-person boat, you can expect to pay £100 and £140 for the half-day rental and full-day rental respectively.

Buoyancy aids, navigation charts, and fuel, as well as full sailing instruction, are all included in the price.

If luxury is what you’re after, you can’t go wrong with ABC Boat hire. Their premium fleet includes day boats and large cabined cruisers that are perfect for families.

Their boats sleep up to eight people and are complete with showers, cooking facilities, and decks (perfect for sun lounging). Some of the fleet even have their own enclosed picnic area.

Each boat departs from Aghinver and has a seven-night minimum stay.

It all depends on which cruiser you book and when, but in the summer months, you can expect to pay around £825 and up for a seven-night cruise.

Manor House Marina

The Manor House Marina is one of Fermanagh’s most popular boat hire companies and they offer loads of sailing experiences.

If you’re planning a day on the lough, you can opt for one of their six-person or eight-person day boats. These small boats are perfect for exploring the lakes on a sunny day.

If you plan on staying in Fermanagh a little longer, then you should consider booking a boating holiday via Manor House Marina.

You can hire a fully equipped modern cruiser with all the facilities you need for a week on the water, from a fridge, cooker, and cooking utensils, to bed linen, towels, and hot and cold water supply.

The marina has nine luxury cruisers in its fleet, the largest of which sleeps up to eight people.

Day boat prices start at £70 per half day and £100 per full day.

If you’re booking a boating holiday, prices will vary according to what month you select and which cruiser you choose, however for a four-person cruiser you should expect to pay around £1,029 for seven nights during peak season.

Carrick Craft

Carrick Craft has 15 boats in its fleet, with options for couples and large groups of up to 10 people.

Their Fermanagh Class cruiser is great for larger families and comes complete with a large saloon and galley.

The Roscommon Class cruiser is the biggest of the company’s fleet. This 10-berth boat has five double/twin cabins, a large galley with two ovens, and a huge sundeck with seating for all your guests.

The activity planner on the company’s website will help you decide where you want to visit on the lough and offers advice on activities you can do too.

How much does it cost?

Depending on which cruiser you choose, you can expect to pay upwards of £2,276 per week in the summer months.

Rather let someone else take the wheel?

If you don’t fancy donning a captain’s hat or aren’t confident navigating your way around Lough Erne on your own, there are loads of guided boat tours to avail of too.

Erne Water Taxis and Enniskillen Castle have teamed up to offer the Island Town & Castle Pass. It includes a one-hour boat tour of Enniskillen, a visit to Enniskillen Castle’s 11 galleries, and tea, coffee, and scones in the Café At The Castle.

Meanwhile, the MV Kestrel is a 42-seater boat that departs from the Round O park in Enniskillen. On board, you’ll take in popular Lough Erne sights including Devenish Island.

However you choose to explore Lough Erne, it’s important to do so safely. Ensure you only sail where it’s safe (the red and white signs dotted around the Lough indicate where you can and can’t go) and always wear a life jacket.

If you get into difficulty, you should call the coastguard on 999.

Now go forth and set sail.

about Carrickcraft

This was an excellent family holiday. The boat was much bigger than we had expected and had everything necessary for an enjoyable trip. The guidance videos and handover from the team had us well prepared for the trip. Despite a few days of rain at the start of our trip we had an excellent time and would highly recommend this type of holiday with Carrickcraft.

Gary Topping

The members of your team in Carrick are simply the highlight of your company. Everyone of them was very kind, helpful and customer-oriented. It was a pleasure to meet them.

Roland Dotterweich

Morgan and his team were fantastic. Very helpful, full of knowledge and great advice. We thoroughly enjoyed our time aboard and look forward to our next adventure!

Booked paddle boarding for my husband's birthday. The staff were brilliant really helpful and provided lots of information prior to the activity. It was a great morning, very relaxing and fun to do. I will defiantly be back again. I have done Hydro bikes and paddle boarding and can't wait until spring to come back camping and do some more fun things.

I used Castle Archdale Boat Hire on a break to Enniskillen in September 2020, originally hiring Canadian canoes on 2 occasions and finally for boat hire and I cannot recommend them highly enough. The staff was very informative and helpful and the equipment was top-notch, so a 5⭐️ rating is well deserved. Thank you and I will be revisiting at my next Fermanagh break 👍

Our family (2 adults & 2 children) visited Castle Archdale Boat Hire & Watersports on our recent trip to the area. We'd heard about the hydrobikes from friends who had recently stayed in the area and spent an hour exploring the marina & nearby islands. While there, we decided to also hire one of the 4 seater buggies. Our children had great fun being peddled around by us. It was a bit of a workout, but it really was worth the effort when we saw the view from the lough shore path and loved exploring the forest park.

We booked the buggies and the hydrobikes. Staff are just lovely. Couldn't have been more helpful (from front desk to young guy sorting our lifejackets to the guys who hot us all on the hydrobikes). Buggies were great fun in the forest and we could have stayed out with them for more than an hour. Buggy was cleaned thoroughly before we used it. Hydrobikea were great fun, easy to use and an amazing way to view the lough. Would highly recommend both. Age of party from 10 to 50. Everyone enjoyed.

Home > Boating Holidays > Lough Erne and the Shannon

Lough Erne and the Shannon waterways stretch from Belleek to Limerick, over 160 miles of cruising! Lough Erne flows from Belturbet to Belleek and centres on the island town of Enniskillen. Lower Lough Erne lies to the north of Enniskillen and Upper Lough Erne lies south of the town. The Shannon-Erne Waterway joins the Upper Lough and connects the Erne to the River Shannon in Southern Ireland.

The best way to explore Lough Erne and the Shannon is from on the water. Based in the heart of Lower Lough Erne, approximately 1 ½ cruising hours from Enniskillen is Manor House Marine. Collect your cruiser from our base and your holiday adventure begins. Discover many a restaurant and activity centre on the Lough Erne and the Shannon. Moor up and explore any of the numerous islands scattered throughout the waterway. You will find many moorings on the islands and ashore where you can stay overnight; the majority of these moorings are free of charge.

Unlike the Shannon and the Erne-Shannon canal, the Erne is virtually free of lock gates. The Erne has only one lock that is rarely used, ensuring a hassle free cruising paradise. Passage at the Lough Erne lock is free, passage in the Erne-Shannon locks is by means of a pre-paid smartcard and passage through the locks in the Shannon is by payment to the lock keeper.

Check out our Holiday Cruisers

For further information on the locks see www.waterwaysireland.org

Located at the end of the Shannon Erne Waterway overlooked by the Slieve Russell mountain is Ballyconnell, a town named after a Celtic Ford. Highly regarded for its coarse fishing, it has also won numerous National Tidy Town awards. Just outside the town is a replica of the Killycluggin Stone which was found here. Dating back to the Iron Age, this important stone contains Celtic motifs first found at La TŠne in Switzerland. The original is now on display in the National Museum.

The town is a fine example of a nineteenth century Irish rural market town – a continuous Main/High Street, with many fine shops and townhouses, important landmark buildings of different periods and blend of attractive colours and fascinating details. The Leitrim Genealogy Centre in Ballinamore library has been set up to deal with enquiries from people who want to trace their Irish ancestors.

Boating on Lough Erne, exploring Northern Ireland

Where is lough erne.

Lough Erne is the name of two connecting lakes in Northern Ireland’s Irish County Fermanagh. It’s the second biggest lake system in Northern Ireland and Ulster and the fourth largest in the entirety of Ireland.

The whole lake system is a widening of the River Erne and is made up of two separate lakes, connected by a narrowing of the river. The two Lough Erne waterways are made up of a smaller southern lake, called the Upper Lough, as it is higher up the river and the bigger northern lake, called the Lower Lough or Broad Lough.

Although residing in Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, Lough Erne is connected to the Shannon, Ireland’s most famous and coveted river, by the Shannon-Erne Waterway. This man-made canal connects the two waterways, making for one of the most epic and rewarding canal boat holidays in western Europe.

With a chance to begin or end in Lough Erne and the whole Shannon waterway in front or behind you, the chances for rewarding Lough Erne cruises are limitless. With a soft border still intact between Ireland and Northern Ireland, boating this stretch of waterway is one that offers a myriad of sights and landmarks that only add to a rewarding journey. Discover boating holidays on the Shannon

How do you get to Lough Erne?

You can start your Lough Erne boat trip from a number of different places across Ireland, all depending on what you want to get out of your trip.

Begin your adventure from Carrick-on-Shannon

cruise boat hire enniskillen

Though 50 miles south of Lough Erne , one of the most popular places to begin your boat journey to the lough is from the town of Carrick-on-Shannon . With Locaboat based here, you can hire a well-maintain boat in no time at all.

Alongside this, the Carrick-on-Shannon to Lough Erne route is one of the most interesting stretches of waterways on the island. The route offers boaters the chance to travel along the most famous Irish river, complete with many must-see sights along the way. These sights can be such simple things as historic landmarks and natural wonders or more in-depth attractions such as quaint towns and villages along the way north.

Taking this route you can also travel from one country to another. Starting out in the Republic of Ireland, your boating trip will wander north through the Irish county of County Caven via the Erne-Shannon waterway and cross into Northern Ireland.

Starting from Lough Erne itself

It’s also possible to begin your Lough Erne adventure from the lough itself. Lough Erne boat hire is made possible by the popularity of the lake and means you can enjoy all that it has to offer right off the back.

After exploring both lower and upper Lough Erne, you can then choose whether to travel south and soak up all the best of the River Shannon after. There is no right or wrong route when travelling through Ireland and Northern Ireland’s waterways, and with such easy access and a multitude of routes, the choices are endless.

Top 6 things to do near Lough Erne

1. explore the fascinating town of enniskillen.

The town of Enniskillen sits directly between Upper and Lower Lough Erne and is the fulcrum on which all travel in this area depends. As one of the largest towns in the area, Enniskillen is an unmissable stopping off point when travelling through Lough Erne in Northern Ireland .

For the history buffs amongst us visiting this area of Ireland, the nearby Enniskillen Castle is a must-see. Built in the early 15th century, the castle was very quickly used as troop barracks, a feature that lasted right into the 20th century. The castle is divided into two sections, a central keep and a large curtained wall adorned with turrets. Enniskillen Castle is also the location of the Fermanagh County Museum, a museum dedicated to the history of the area, from prehistory right up to the modern day.

2. Take to the waters by canoe or kayak

Though you will be boating across the water in your home away from home, you may wish to get a little closer to the surface and experience a more adventurous side to the lake. The best way to do this is to hire a canoe or kayak.

The rugged coastline of Lough Erne and its sheer size means that large waves can build during windy periods, providing an ideal environment for the experienced canoeist.

Unlike your Lough Erne cruiser hire , a kayak or canoe gives you the ability to get close to over 150 islands, inlets and coves that are scattered around the lough. These islands and inlets are ideally placed to be explored via a small vessel such as a kayak or canoe – only adding to the adventurous nature of Lough Erne activities .

3. Try your hand at fishing on Lough Erne

cruise boat hire enniskillen

One of Lough Erne’s most attractive aspects is the fantastic angling opportunities it provides. Much like the wider reaches of County Fermanagh, the expansive waters of the lough, its many inlets and coves all provide the perfect environment for fishing.

So good is the coarse fishing around Lough Erne that it has become a premier location for professional fishing competitions and competitors from all over Europe.

Keen fishermen and women can set their best fishing skills on the lake, catching a range of different fish species. The most common of these are the common roach, which can be caught here in their thousands. Aside from these, there is also a huge population of wild brown trout, bream, pike and a number of salmon.

4. Hire a bike and explore Lough Erne by land

One of the most popular Lough Erne activities is arguably one of the most simple to enjoy. The hiking and walking trails that criss-cross the area surrounding Lough Erne are some of the most rewarding and picturesque throughout Northern Ireland.

It’s easy enough to moar up your boat in one of the Lough Erne marinas and set off on a walk through woodlands and rolling hills that surround the lake.

If you’re more comfortable on two wheels, fear not! Lough Erne is also a great place for exploring by bike. The region itself is part of the wider County Fermanagh National Cycle Network, meaning there are many signed cycle ways crisscrossing the area. These range from traffic-free and family-friendly routes to more in-depth and testing cycling routes around Lough Erne .

5. Discover the Marble Arch Caves

Only a short distance from the lakes of Lough Erne is one of the best show caves in Europe, a great expanse of limestone caves hidden under the earth. These limestone caves were first explored in the 18th century. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that work began to make the caves accessible for visitors.

Today, you can explore the caves thanks to the additions of concrete floorings, handrails and steps leading down into the deepest regions. After exploring the Marble Arch Caves, you can then come to the surface and pop into the visitor centre which showcases the long and interesting history of the caves.

One of the most popular show caves anywhere in Europe, a visit to Marble Arch Caves is not to be missed when on your Lough Erne boat holiday .

Get up close and personal with wildlife on Lough Erne

Aside from the long list of recreational activities, both upper and lower Lough Erne provide the perfect environments for a plethora of wildlife to thrive and the chance for you to view them in their natural habitats.

The region around the upper lake and the borders of the UK and Ireland are some of the best places to see wildlife on the island and for animal lovers, boating through Lough Erne and its inlets allows you to catch sight of so much of this wildlife.

One of the best places to do this is the National Trust conservation area above Upper Lough Erne. This reserve is a home for an array of birdlife, including wading birds such as curlew, lapwing, common redshank, and even the protected snipe.

The mature oak woodlands that surround the waterways are also home to some of the rarest butterflies found anywhere in the UK. Keen-eyed butterfly spotters may be in luck and catch sight of butterflies such as the silver-washed fritillary and the garden tiger moth.

It’s not only the huge range of insects and birds you can see in the land surrounding Lough Erne; there are also a number of rarely seen mammals. The rarer red squirrel can sometimes be seen climbing the oaks around the lake, a sight that is unusual in northwest Europe after the introduction of the grey. One main reason why red squirrels are on the recovery here is thanks to another animal, the pine marten.

Top of the list for animal lovers and wildlife spotters travelling through the Lough Erne and the rivers surrounding it has to be the large family of otters here. Often seen searching for food and patrolling their territories, otters are a highlight of any nature visit to this area of Northern Ireland.

Must-see sights as you travel to Lough Erne

Whether you’re beginning your boating holiday at Lough Erne or further south along the River Shannon, planning your route and deciding which way to go is important. Not only will it allow you to organise your route far better, but it also ensures you don’t miss the numerous landmarks and attractions on the way.

Starting your journey from Carrick-on-Shannon

cruise boat hire enniskillen

Many boating holidays through Ireland and Northern Ireland will begin in the town of Carrick-on-Shannon. This is not only a great practical place to secure your Shannon boat hire but is a place of interest all by itself. A town full of history and culture, one of Carrick-on-Shannon’s most interesting landmarks is its Costello Chapel. Built as the resting place of one Edward and Mary Costello, local traders in the area, Costello Chapel is one of the smallest chapels in the entire world.

Carrick-on-Shannon’s former 19th-century courthouse has been restored to become Leitrim’s first integrated centre for the arts, a centre known as The Dock. The Dock holds a 100 seater performance space, three art galleries and an artists studio. Timing your arrival and boat departure right, you may even be able to catch an event at The Dock while you are here.

Heading north and through the Shannon–Erne Waterway

After leaving Carrick-on-Shannon, you and your boat will make its way north, passing along the River Shannon. This section of the river is home to some of the most idyllic and charming landscapes that the River Shannon has to offer, and you will quickly realise why travelling to Lough Erne, Ireland via this particular route is so popular.

Moving away from the natural watercourse of the River Shannon, you will then make your way easterly along the Shannon-Erne Waterway, a man-made canal that connects the Irish river of Shannon to the Northern Irish river of Erne. As soon as you enter the canal, you shall arrive at the small settlement of Leitrim Village.

Leitrim Village is an ideal place to stop off before making your way down the canal, offering up a number of great landmarks and attractions, as well as being a charming and idyllic Irish village in its own right, something that truly makes a trip like this. One of the biggest draws, aside from the picturesque nature of the village, is the castle ruins of O’Rourke’s Castle.

First constructed in the late 15th century, the castle is undoubtedly a tower house built at the request of one Sir Brian O’Rourke. The castle was besieged and destroyed in the late 16th century and has remained in ruins since. Exploring the remains of O’Rourke’s Castle takes you down through the centuries of medieval Ireland and the stories it has to tell.

Travelling through the Shannon-Erne Waterway to is eastern end, you will soon come to the easterly town of Ballinamore, another of the charming settlements along the canal. The rural town centre of the area, Ballinamore, is a great place to see how charming Irish rural life goes after all these years. Top attractions in the town include the Old Court House, built in the 1830s and the Church of Ireland, built around 1780. The 19th century arched stone bridges in the town also offer a glimpse into this town’s overwhelming charm.

Continuing through Belturbet and crossing the Ireland/UK border

Exiting the Shannon–Erne Waterway, you will quickly join the River Erne and wind your way past the town of Belturbet. Belturbet is one of the most attractive historic towns on the River Erne and the centre of the region’s new heritage tourism project. Aside from the obvious township beauty that comes with many small towns and villages around this area of Ireland, Belturbet is also a great place to visit for its historical landmarks.

The best of these is the GNR Cut stone railway station that was built in 1885. This has now been restored to its former glory and houses an in-depth exhibition telling the history of the station and its place with the local community. For real fans of railway history, the station also has a huge collection of railway memorabilia from the past centuries.

After leaving the town, your journey will take you further up the River Erne, finally passing the soft border, leaving the Republic of Ireland and passing into Northern Ireland. One of the first landmarks and attractions you will first come to is the Crom Estate, run by the natural trust. Looming large over the estate is Crom Castle, first constructed by a Scottish planter at the beginning of the 17th century. This stunning building dominates the two-thousand-acre estate and is an awe-inspiring welcome once you cross the Northern Irish border.

Shannon River Boat Hire Comparison Website Ireland

Arranging Shannon Boat Hire Holidays in Ireland since 2002

Cruising the shannon-erne waterway.

The Shannon-Erne Waterway was known as the Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Canal and opened in 1860. Re-opened in 1994 after restoration, it is 63km of river, lake and still-water canal starting in Leitrim Village and ending in Belturbet. It takes approximately 13 hours to travel and is known as the location where Ireland's 'little people' originate! If you like locks then the Shannon-Erne waterway is for you - there are 16 automated locks along the waterway and take about 13 hours to navigate. The waterway is mostly tranquil as it meanders along, with some nice towns and villages to visit along the way.

From Belturbet you can cruise north along the Erne river to Lough Erne. Upper Lough Erne (which strangely is to the south of Lower Lough Erne) features the county town of Enniskillen, a busy town with pretty much everything you need - there's mooring right beside the Erneside Shopping Centre. Lower Lough Erne is also known as 'The Broad Lough' and can get choppy in high winds.

Lough Erne is as picturesque as Lough Derg with a good mix of history and activities. There are some very interesting islands including Boa Island, home of the famous stone carved Janus figures, the 12th century church at White Island and the restored monastery at Devinish Island. There are activities at Castle Archdale, the Lusty Beg Island resort and Safari Action near Enniskillen, and you can visit the home of Belleek pottery in Belleek.

Shannon and Erne Cruising Guide Map

See the full interactive map

Castle Archdale has a busy activity centre with lots of river and land based activies for all ages. Lusty Beg Island Resort and Safari Action at Enniskillen offers a range of activities - off-road driving, archery, clay pigeon shooting, shooting and canoeing as well as a nature trail and fairy trail. There's the Belleek Pottery visitors centre at Belleek, home of the world famous pottery. For a bit of pampering there are spas at Lusty Beg and at Manor House just north of Enniskillen. There are golf courses at Enniskillen, Lusty Beg and Castle Hume.

Activities on Lough Erne and the Shannon-Erne waterway

Lough Erne has a wealth of history in the islands dotted around the lake. The most famous is Boa Island, home of the famous stone carved Janus figures at Caldragh, believed to be pre-Christian. Devinish Island is home to a semi-restored monastic site founded in the 6th century by Saint Mola. White Island has the semi-restored ruins of a 12th century church. There's Enniskillen Castle in Ennsikillen and further afield are the Marble Arch Caves, Florenc Court, Castle Archdale and Crom Castle.

Holy Island on Lough Derg

The Coarse angler will find some of the finest fishing available in Europe, with bream, roach and hybrids in abundance as well as perch and tench. Add to this pike fishing that is second to none - whether seeking to catch them on fly or in a more traditional manner and the region offers all anglers wonderful opportunities. There good information on the Fishing in Ireland website.

Fishing on the Shannon River

The Shannon-Erne Waterway

There's no wrong choice when choosing a route on the Shannon, Ireland is a small country and the landscape is pretty much the same all through the midlands with hills at the northern Lough Erne and southern Lough Derg.

The Shannon-Erne waterway is a lovely, tranquil waterway with 5 small towns along it's length, each with pubs and restaurants. Lough Erne is very picturesque and has a good mix of activities and historical sites in the islands and harbours around the lake. Enniskillen is a large market town with restaurants aplenty and good places to visit.

The islands of Lough Erne are a particular attraction, each with it's own piece of history - Boa Island, Devenish Island and White Island are the most famous.

There are three cruiser companies offering boats for hire from Carrick-on-Shannon just south of the Shannon-Erne waterway, and three locations on Lough Erne to hire boats. The Shannon-Erne waterway is mostly canal but also includes rivers and small lakes along it's length, some of which offer great fishing. The locks on the Shannon-Erne waterway are automated locks and you'll need a lock card to pass through - these are available when you collect your boat.

Navigation on the Shannon-Erne waterway is by means of green and red markers that outline the cruising channels, they're painted white on the side that you need to be on. Once you cross the border all of the markers are red, but still have the white side to show you which channel to take. The markers are accurately marked on the navigation maps that will be on board your boat when you take over and full tuition is provided.

There's free mooring at the towns along the Shannon-Erne waterway and at most places on Lough Erne. You can also moor at most of the islands on the lake to visit historical sites - for some you'll need to take a dinghy.

Getting to your boat.

Due to the rural location of the boat hire marinas on the river they can be hard to reach with the exception of Carrick-on-Shannon which is served by both bus and train from Dublin. All of the cruiser companies offer a shared transfer service from Dublin airport to Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturdays but there's no shared transfer from Shannon airport or Knock airport. The cruiser companies on Lough Erne offer a transfer from Belfast airport. Some cruiser companies offer transfers on weekdays and prices vary depending on the company and the day of the week. Sometimes it's good value and less hassle to hire a car, particularly for short breaks. For public transport you can take a bus from Dublin to Enniskillen and make your way to the marina from there.

Theres's more detailed information on how to get to your boat on our web page - aptly titled Getting to your Boat .

Shannon River

Shannon River are have been boat hire agents for the Shannon River in Ireland since 2002. We're passionate about boat hire holidays on the Shannon and our mission is to share the Shannon experience with as many people as we can. It's the same price to book through us as it is to book directly with the cruiser companies and we offer impartial advice on the best boat for your cruising holiday.

A Shannon cruise is all about relaxation. The boats go very slowly, you'll be overtaken by cyclists (and some joggers if they're fast enough) and you don't have much choice but to relax and watch the beautiful scenery go by. But it's not all about cruising, a Shannon cruise offers many great restaurants and, of course, an abundance of pubs to have a nice creamy Guinness.

To help you plan your cruise we have an interactive map , Approximate cruising times and a Travel Guide . There are also some suggested cruises to help you on your way. Our motto is make a plan - if you stick to it, that's good. If you don't stick to it, that's good too.

About Carrickcraft

Welcome to Carrickcraft, one of Ireland’s longest established and most experienced cruiser hire companies. Operating along the majestic Shannon and Erne Waterways , Carrickcraft have provided idyllic cruising holidays in Ireland for almost 50 years.

The company was established in the 1970’s, just as inland cruising on the River Shannon was becoming popular as an active holiday activity.  The first marina was opened in Carrick-on-Shannon , which was then, and still is, considered by many to be the centre of cruising on the Shannon .

History of Carrickcraft

cruise boat hire enniskillen

The second marina was opened some years later in Banagher, on the Lower Shannon, which allowed holidaymakers to travel on a one-way cruise, starting in one marina and finishing in another.

In 1994 , a historic move by the British and Irish Governments, saw the re-opening of the canal which links the Shannon with Lough Erne in Northern Ireland.  This allowed for one-way cruises between Carrick-on-Shannon and our third marina on Upper Lough Erne .  We have since relocated to Bellanaleck , near Enniskillen.

In 2015 , Carrickcraft merged with Waveline Cruisers, which was a well-established company offering cruising holidays on the Shannon , particularly within the German, Austrian and Swiss markets.  They are now based in Germany and look after all the Carrickcraft business within the German-speaking areas.

In 2017 , we added some Linssen cruisers to our expanding fleet and joined Linssen Boating Holidays. Linssen boats are renowned throughout Europe for the quality of their design and build.

In 2018 , Carrickcraft joined the Locaboat group of companies, and we now have a selection of Penichettes® in the fleet .

What makes us unique?

Carrickcraft is unique in that our 3 strategically placed marinas give access to the entire Shannon and Erne Waterways .

We still specialise in one-way cruises and one of the most popular routes is a 2 week cruise starting at Banagher on the Lower Shannon and cruising to Bellanaleck on Upper Lough Erne , where 700km of interconnecting canals, rivers and lakes unfold before you.

With a choice of over 23 different cruisers to choose from, we are sure to have the perfect cruiser for you, in the perfect location.

To make planning your holiday as hassle-free as possible, we provide an Online Tutorial, Boat Demonstration videos, detailed navigation chart, maps, grocery ordering service and transfers to and from the airport.

We will endeavour to meet all requests, large or small.

Carrickcraft Crew

carrickcraft

Our staff are our biggest asset and they will give you a big welcome and help you out whenever they can. In addition to our permanent staff, we have dozens of casual staff in the summer who will clean and prepare your boat.

They are always willing to give advice on where to go tomorrow, maybe where the local pub is having a traditional music night, or maybe where you shouldn’t go!

We are very proud of our company and the service we offer and our aim is to make sure every customer enjoys the Carrickcraft experience from start to finish.

Description of the boating holiday

A boating holiday on the great lakes of the River Erne Take advantage of your self-drive canal boat rental to venture on the waters of the River Erne towards Belleek, world famous for its crafts. No boating experience or licence needed.

Welcome to Northern Ireland! Here, as you are in Great Britain, pounds sterling is the currency used. Bellanaleck is a peaceful little village on the banks of the River Erne with a central location between the large Upper Lough Erne and Lower Lough lakes. Before picking up your Nicols canal boat, go (by car) to the Marble Arch cave, classified as a "Global Geopark" by UNESCO for its geological interest. With more than 11km of tunnels formed by three underground rivers over the centuries the site is well worth the detour whether you choose a visit led by a specialist caving guide or simply take a self-guided tour. Right next to it is the Cuilcagh hiking trail (12km round trip) which is a wooden pontoon that winds through the middle of an unspoiled bog, until you reach the highest point of Cuilcagh Mountain from where the view is breathtaking. After all these adventures, head to the marina for the start of your boating holiday on the River Erne.

Enniskillen: home to a magnificent castle on the banks of the Erne A small island town in Northern Ireland, Enniskillen is surrounded by the different waters of the River Erne. Before mooring in one of the marinas, take a tour of the island to enjoy the best views of its 16th century castle. From your self-drive canal boat, the fortress will be all the more impressive. Once you have moored in Enniskillen, a wide variety of activities are available to you: visit the castle and its military museum, enjoy watersports activities at the Blueway Water Activity Zone, discover the neo-classical castle of Castle Coole, golf, shopping, angling (fishing license required)… You will also find a large number of pubs and restaurants in which to spend typical Irish evenings, with family or friends. Lower Lough Erne: a delight for hikers and anglers A large expanse of shallow water located north of Enniskillen, Lower Lough Erne is a paradise for fishermen, but also for hikers. Wander around Tully Castle or Monea Castle, walk to the Magho cliffs for a view from which you can see the Atlantic Ocean, or climb to the Blackslee Waterwall waterfall in the heart of an enchanting forest of pines and poplars. Belleek: internationally renowned porcelain It was following the Great Irish Famine that the village of Belleek became well known: in 1857, after more than 10 years of food crisis, a local business owner created the porcelain workshop Belleek Pottery to boost employment and promote economic recovery. After initially only manufacturing purely functional objects, the company then became synonymous with luxury items, even supplying Queen Victoria herself! Take a tour of the workshops during an educational guided tour with something to keep the whole family entertained. It's already the end of your boating holiday on the River Erne. Return to Bellanaleck to return your canal boat ready for the next crew.
