Say ZuZu | Interview | New Retrospective Album, ‘Here Again: A Retrospective (1994-2002)’ + ‘No Time To Lose’ (Out In 2023)

say zuzu tour

Say ZuZu is an Americana rock band from New Hampshire. Originally formed in 1991, Say ZuZu recorded and released nine full-length albums before disbanding in 2003 and reuniting in 2019.

The band’s first release on Strolling Bones Records is ‘Here Again: A Retrospective (1994-2002)’ and includes highlights from the group’s five studio albums recorded during its touring heyday. A new studio record from the band is scheduled for release in 2022/2023 on Strolling Bones Records.

“For those who haven’t met our music before, these are highlights from five records released between 1994-2002. The songs focus on the large internal lives of people in small mill towns like ours. This record also chronicles a decade of growth from a fiercely independent, self-produced New Hampshire band that flew under the radar during the heyday of the 1990s alt-country movement. The title of the record, Here Again, is inspired by a song from our 1994 self-titled record. We’ve always sought to write songs that hold up, personal songs that are durable and can stand on their own in a variety of arrangements. ‘Here Again’ is one of those songs. It’s also a fitting title for a record that’s an opening salvo from a recently reunited band with its first new studio record forthcoming in 2022/2023”.

How does it feel to be back together after 20 years? What occupied your life during that pause?

Jon Nolan: Being back together feels kind of amazing and surreal. Equal measures of deep familiarity, and surprise at the novelty of making noise with people again. IT’S AWESOME, and well timed. We could all use a hefty dose of connection and togetherness these days, no?

As for the in-between times, I stayed involved in music for a long time before shifting to work in the substance use treatment field, where I still am. I booked the Stone Church Music Club in Newmarket, NH for a bit, developed and championed the RPM Challenge while I was the Music Editor for the beloved/sadly defunct Wire NH magazine. I released a few solo records, performed around the region and I opened and ran Milltown Recording Co. (a recording studio) for about ten years. I recorded a bunch of amazing stuff from all over New England. Super fun. All the while, my wife and I were enjoying home roasted coffee and raising the kiddos here in New Hampshire. They can identify The Beatles, and they appreciate Monty Python, so, basically we’re killing it as parents.

Cliff Murphy: Well, there are six of us, so there are a lot of different answers to that question. Generally, a lot of big life events. My wife and I had four kids and moved from Boston to Baltimore. After ZuZu played its 2003 farewell shows, I started a career as an ethnomusicologist and folklorist: making field recordings of traditional music, recording oral histories, and focusing on cultural sustainability initiatives as it relates to folklife and cultural heritage. But mainly, getting married, going back to school, working, and (still) raising four kids. Aside from the two of us (Jon and Cliff), Steve Ruhm has been an airline pilot, Jon Pistey has been an ice rink/facilities manager (including zamboni driving), James Nolan has been a fundraiser, and Tim Nylander has been a project manager for housing construction.

We are very excited about the new release. Tell us how much work went into ‘Here Again: A Retrospective (1994-2002)’?

Cliff Murphy: Sooooo much work!

Jon Nolan: Cliff speaks the truth. Who knew keeping big trunks of tapes in every conceivable format would pay off some day. A monumental effort by the band and the fabulous (and patient) Strolling Bones Records folks. It was worth it, though! It’s already wild watching people online talking about enjoying songs like ‘Broken’, which was largely forgotten on the setlist back in the day.

And that’s not all, you’re planning to release a new album later this year. How much is already recorded and what can we expect?

Cliff Murphy: The whole album has been recorded, mixed, and mastered. As excited as we are about ‘Here Again’ reintroducing our music to the world, the most compelling thing for us has been to make new music together again.

Jon Nolan: Yes, the album is DONE. We can’t wait to share it! We started with 20ish songs that we knew we really liked, we demo’d them, kicked them around on line trading tracks on Pro Tools, flew everybody into Portland, ME, roughed up ‘em and some more, recorded the sessions, drank all the coffee that Tandem Coffee in Portland could brew (so good! Their sticky buns, too, but I digress), listened to the pre-production demos, tweaked some arrangements, handed the pink slip to some great songs (maybe next time, kid), and gathered up twelve songs that we think justified their place on the record (and then some), and then came back to Portland to finish off the city’s coffee supply, navigating a drummer with a broken leg (backwoods skiing!) and a bass player with a brain bleed (he slipped on the ice!). But we got it done, and we’re overjoyed. You always want an artist to think they’re putting out “the best thing I’ve ever done”, don’t you? We feel that way. It’s an eclectic mix of songs and sounds that are a patchwork of timbres and textures inspired by our influences, but we’re broadening the “americana” label a smidge.

You recently shared from the latest compilation, ‘You Don’t Know Me’, which appeared on their 2002 album ‘Every Mile’. It feels that it’s a song that’s close to your heart. Tell us about it?

Cliff Murphy: I wrote that song well over twenty years ago when I was recently single and emotionally raw: the lyrics express what I felt at the time. I was also completely broke and working on a house painting crew with my friend Drew Wyman, who is a great bassist with a deep collection of music. Drew would essentially deejay our work day, bringing great records he thought I hadn’t heard. That experience introduced me to the music of The Faces, and to The Kinks’ concept albums like ‘Arthur’ and ‘Village Green Preservation Society’. We also spent a lot of time listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Cosmo’s Factory’ and ‘Willy and the Poor Boys’. The groove and tone of some of those records found their way into this song. Playing this song with the band always feels good.

“It’s the thing underneath the music that’s the fire”

What are some of the most important players that influenced your own style and what in particular did they employ in their playing that you liked?

Cliff Murphy: I’ve always admired songwriters who make portable music – meaning, their songs can be performed/interpreted successfully by other players. Bob Dylan – whose music is both rooted and poetic – exemplifies this. Willie Nelson and Paul Simon both have a style of singing that feels conversational, even while being beautifully melodic. Both also have their own distinct guitar style, which they apply in very different ways. Willie is also a bit like Sinatra or Whitney or Elvis: when he’s singing other people’s songs, he employs his own phrasing to make a song sound new and authentic to him. Jeff Tweedy and Jay Fararr utilize bands incredibly well to paint backdrops to their lyrics. John Fogerty gets tremendous lyrical mileage out of a very few words. Elvis Costello spits brilliant words out with vinegar. Every Chuck Berry and Bruce Springsteen song is a master class in character development. Hank Williams and John Lee Hooker have an emotional immediacy to their songs that penetrates even the hardest hearts. Paul McCartney and Sam Cooke have a rich vocal tone that I could never achieve but wish I could. More recently, songwriters like Joan Shelly inspire me with a highly visual and poetic style that evokes a remarkable sense of place. Finally, the work that I do as a folklorist – working with people like Irish button accordionist Billy McComiskey in Baltimore – is a daily reminder that our greatest artists can also be our most generous ones.

Jon Nolan: Now, I play guitar and sing, and there are artists of various disciplines that have had a profound effect on my own playing, singing and writing. But, more than the chops or stylistic stuff, I tend to gravitate toward players/singers/producers who favor (from my perspective) connection with the visceral magic of music. I think it’s why no matter how often I put on Little Richard, it gives me goosebumps. EVERY time. It’s why when I put on Chuck Berry’s ‘Too Much Monkey Business’, I feel cooler, like I have a little more swagger, like the first time you get a couple beers in you. Those guys are before my time, but I still feel that! Why? I think it’s because that stuff is like the undiluted essence of Rock and Roll – but it’s the thing underneath the music that’s the fire. The unbridled energy of youth and hope and discovery (and sex, probably! Ha!). Neil Young has made a career out of trying to ride that unbridled energy. Neil doesn’t think in “guitar licks”, he just seems like he’s plugging straight into his soul – point to point wiring – and what you hear is what he’s experiencing. Willie Nelson, too. How else do you get all that classical guitar Django-y stuff woven into country? And his voice! It’s inspiring. Daniel Lanois as producer, too – ‘Wrecking Ball’, ‘Teatro’, ‘Time Out of Mind’, ‘Acadie’ – wow. When that Lanois thing is happening, it feels like you’re being let into something intimate and sacred. Tom Waits’ ‘Mule Variations’ has to be in there for the same reasons. More than anything they’re playing/singing/recording – to me it feels like they’re showing me how to tap in. I’m not saying I can do the same thing yet, but when I do it is when I feel most aligned with music and my own personal expression. It’s a journey to whittle away the fear to get to that.

It would be fantastic if you could remember some words about each of your albums. What are some thoughts that run through your mind when listening to it again?

‘Highway Signs & Driving Songs’ (1995)

Cliff Murphy: I’ve always felt like this is the moment – ‘Highway Signs’, ‘Buxton’, ‘Better Days’, and the ‘Driving Song’ in particular – where the band found its own sound.

Jon Nolan: A turning point for us, musically and experientially. We had recently purchased a school bus (“The Bull”) and retrofitted it as a tour bus. Then we traveled to Franklin, TN to record with a man as generous and warm as he was talented —- Bradley Hartman. Bradley did Willie’s ‘Stardust’, the ‘Honeysuckle Rose’ soundtrack (‘On the Road Again’), some Emmy Lou, Roseann Cash and others. We were beside ourselves. He did great for us, and really made us feel good about what we were doing. He passed this last year. I hope he knew how much he had an effect on us.

‘Take These Turns’ (1997)

Cliff Murphy: We made this record in two weeks, and then embarked on our first three week tour of the Deep South. When I look at pictures of this experience, I see that we were swept up in the romance of road life. Those images and those memories are wonderful. Hearing the album is harder – I can hear that we are a band in transition. The golden moments on this record are the tracks with Dan Dugmore’s pedal steel and lap steel. Also, Jon’s songs ‘Broken’ and ‘This Town’ are two of my all-time favorite ZuZu performances.

Jon Nolan: We were blessed to be with Bradley on this record again, but I agree with Cliff. We were figuring some things out. There are lovely spots and metaphorical clay that we wish we could shape differently now, but that’s how it goes when you make music. You do your best and set it free!

‘Bull’ (1998)

Cliff Murphy: This record is one of the only albums I’ve been involved in making where I don’t ever feel the need to give a new listener context, explanations, or disclaimers. I’m proud of the songs, the sounds, and the performances.

Jon Nolan: This is the first record in our development as artists where we shifted from self consciously “making records” into just making records because that’s what we did. We had a vision and we executed it. I love this record. I’m still super proud of it as well. Good job, 1998, us!

say zuzu tour

‘Every Mile’ (2002)

Jon Nolan: ‘Every Mile’ is bittersweet for me. I hear us continuing to stretch and grow, musically, but it’s hard to look back and experience this batch of songs without thinking about it in terms of what we were going through. I feel proud of the fact that we brought it, and that we captured a really strong batch of honest songs, and we got to do it at a studio where so many amazing records were cut (Ardent Studios in Memphis). I also feel great that when we split, it wasn’t due to interpersonal or even creative issues. It was just time. The Peter Pan thing wears off. The shine of the rock and roll lifestyle starts to fade and life shows up. I hear those themes in this record. These songs hold up in a way that feels timeless to me.

Cliff Murphy: Similar to ‘Bull’, for me, this is a record I feel really good about. The difference is that ‘Bull’ was recorded during a relatively happy time in our lives. ‘Every Mile’ was hard fought, was recorded in difficult circumstances, and at a time when the demands of road life were taking a toll. While I hear all of that difficulty on this record, I still want to play all 12 of these songs.

say zuzu tour

What are some of the most memorable gigs?

Cliff Murphy: The first night we ever played in Europe. We played in a 16th Century theater on the edge of the Alps, for a room full of Italians who knew all of our songs. It was surreal, but also the first time and place where the dream of playing music matched the reality of the gig.

Jon Nolan: Oh man! Buy us a coffee and set a tape recorder. You’ll get more gig stories than anyone could ever need. A couple of highlights…Singing ‘Pancho and Lefty’ with Joe Ely and Calvin Russell at a packed festival gig in Italy…countless gigs where we sounded great and played for a handful of people far away from home – The Empty Glass in Charleston, WV, The Nick in Birmingham, AL. Playing the places that always made you feel like family were always amazing – The Hideout in Chicago, Mohawk Place in Buffalo, Casbeers in San Antonio, our home base of the Stone Church Music Club in Newmarket, NH.

Is there still any unreleased material from the past?

Cliff Murphy: Yes, a ton of it. Strolling Bones will be reissuing five of our old studio albums (‘Say ZuZu’, ‘Highway Signs & Driving Songs’, ‘Take These Turns’, ‘Bull’, and ‘Every Mile’) and we are planning to include bonus tracks (unreleased material) with each.

So are you planning to hit the road this year? I’m sure 2023 will be a busy year for you promoting the new album…

Jon Nolan: Yes, we will be playing live shows. What we won’t be doing is touring in our old converted school bus. We’ll be playing the East coast, and hopefully back to Europe.

Looking back, what was the highlight of your time in the band? Which songs are you most proud of? Where and when was your most memorable gig?

Cliff Murphy: The brotherhood of the band is the living highlight of being in Say ZuZu. Singing harmony with Jon. Playing big, loud, crunchy chords with tremolo while everybody else is doing their thing. Making a new record with these guys, rediscovering Say ZuZu as a living, breathing band, is a gift to us. I can’t wait for the new record to be released. Songs I feel closest to are probably some of the deep cuts: ‘Big Blue’, ‘Here Again’, ‘Still’, ‘Independence Day’, ‘Hank’, ‘I Know Him Well’, ‘B&M’.

As for most memorable gigs – that’s a tough one. Playing one time at Barrister’s in Memphis, I remember feeling completely locked into the music, and not caring that it was the worst dump we’d ever played in and there was only one person there. Also, towards the end of our final European tour in 2002 – we played 27 shows in 30 days, and we were completely on fire. Physically, it felt terrible, but musically it felt like we were one.

Jon Nolan: The highlight is having the whole experience. We were, and are a band! That’s a special thing. Also, it’s a weird sensation to arrive at a place in life where you feel like you have an actual body of work. I feel grateful for that. We’ve had incredible shared experiences with one another that we don’t take for granted – even if those experiences didn’t (yet!) result in fame and fortune. Rather than songs, I’ll pick albums: ‘Bull’, ‘Every Mile’ and the forthcoming record ‘No Time To Lose’ due out in early ‘23. Those collections feel like us being us, and I love all the songs on all those records in particular.

Say ZuZu - Here Again: A Retrospective (1994-2002)

By Lee Zimmerman

Say what? A new compilation offers a few good reasons why Say ZuZu may be worth more than a mention.

There’s clearly a divide between being labelled essential while also being described as unappreciated.

Yet that’s the predicament that New Hampshire’s Say ZuZu found itself in from the mid-90s to the early part of the millennium. Happily, when there’s talent involved, it’s never too late for second chances, a fact that the members of Say ZuZu were aware of when they opted to reunite and bring their music back to the fore.

The result, the aptly titled Here Again: A Retrospective (1994-2002) , distils highlights from the band’s prime period of productivity and serves as a prelude for a set of all new songs the band promises to release later this year. It’s a welcome return, especially for those whose tastes lean towards the forebears of modern Americana — Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Wilco, The Long Ryders, The Bottle Rockets, the Jayhawks, Whiskeytown and the Old 97s in particular.

Given the fact that the band released nine albums during that initial phase of their career, the 12 tracks that grace this sampler of sorts seem a somewhat meager offering overall. However, they do offer a nice overview, one that will hopefully encourage those who are unaware to go back and revisit the originals. Whatever the response, it is clear that the band broke up prematurely, when, in fact, an appreciative audience may have been eagerly awaiting.

That prognosis is borne out by the songs that are included here, most of which find the band sharing some earnest shuffles and mid-tempo melodies. ‘You Don’t Know Me’, ‘Pennsylvania’, ‘Wasting Time’ and ‘Here Again’ reflect a certain confidence and clarity, mostly unobtrusive offerings that don’t tamper with the template, but find them instead earnest and engaged in it instead.

Other tracks are a bit more prescient and purposeful; sturdy rockers that deliver the goods with drive and determination. ‘Better Days’ is an ideal example of the rugged resilience that they plied overall, while ‘Government Job’, ‘Doldrums’, ‘Don’t Tie Me Down’ and ‘Highway Signs’ keep an insurgent attitude intact. Here again, those with a penchant for classic Americana might notice a certain familiarity factor at play, but it’s well worth remembering that Say ZuZu were helping to preserve the precedent rather than merely imitate the inevitable.

Whether or not Here Again brings the band the recognition they so belatedly deserve remains to be seen. After all, the sound they share is so entrenched in the musical mainstream it will likely be difficult to perceive them as doing anything to distinguish themselves in an arena overstocked with a similar sound.

Their contemporaries have the clear advantage of having outpaced them in the past, which means they have a way to go in terms of jockeying for any present positioning. The planned rerelease of their original albums - with previously unheard add-ons and the detailed liner notes - ought to help their cause, but only if there’s an audience interested in listening.

Consequently, it would be nice to know that for the time being at least, Here Again might help put Say ZuZu on the tip of a few tongues.

Say Zuzu is back: Jon Nolan and Cliff Murphy on new album and coming home again

On Saturday, Sept. 17, Say ZuZu ventures back to their stompin’ grounds for their first show at the Stone Church in nearly 20 years. The group are fresh off the release of a retrospective double LP (check out their site to order one up, or, better yet, grab one at the gig!) and a stint in the studio working on A NEW SAY ZUZU ALBUM!

Seacoastonline caught up with founding frontmen Cliff Murphy and Jon Nolan to gather all the intel and revisit the roots of the Seacoast’s finest roots rockers.

Seacoastonline: ZuZu! How’d the reunion gigs go at the Press Room a couple months back?

Murphy: We had a blast. It was fun and exciting for our setlist to come back to life, meaning, for the first time in 20 years, we got to mix new songs in with the old songs. Never thought that would happen again.

Nolan: Agreed! Never thought we’d get to discover a new venue together either. We played Sun Tiki Studios in Portland, Maine for the first time then, too. Amazing folks. Lovely what they’ve created there. Between Tristan at The Press Room and Ian at Sun Tiki, it was a luxurious and welcoming re-entry into the New England scene for us.

Seacoastonline: Is it fun to have a band that is relatively dormant, but is still able to commence from time to time to have, well, a time?

Murphy: Well, as they say, “better to be relatively dormant than relatively dormat.” In all seriousness, we are all active musicians. Say ZuZu-ing is one (important) way that each of us makes music. It’s like when the Autobots all connect up to make one super powerful Transformer. Only the roots rock version of that.

Nolan: Cliff’s gonna Cliff! (Laughs.) What he said. It’s nice to revisit our catalog, and nice to be able to drop into the experience again - and reimagine it.

Seacoastonline: Speaking of times, you all just spent a considerable number of moments gathered in a, gasp, recording studio! Whatcha all get up to? How was the experience?

Nolan: I know! A studio! I think it’s probably what anybody who knows us or who has had a similar experience as us would expect. A lot of it was the same, and a lot of it was different. It was helpful to have Lance Vardis, the producer on our “Bull” record, on board. He’s someone who’s been intimately involved in several of our records including mixing “Every Mile.” Personally, one of the interesting experiences for me was this is the first ZuZu record where I had 10 years of making records in my own Milltown Recording Co. studio under my belt. So that certainly informed how I experienced making “No Time to Lose” (the new album title). Many of us have had a number of other studio experiences in the “between years,“ too, and undoubtedly those experiences informed how we came together. But broadly, we found a really comfy place in Portland called The Studio, got good coffee and good food, and got down to work. I think it’s fair to say that after the fact we all felt kind of like “Oh, OK! Now we know how we do this again.”

Seacoastonline: Given the fact that it’s been a "gagillion" years since Say ZuZu released a record, was it easy to write a new batch of tunes, or was it difficult to get the gears grinding again? What’s the songwriting process like within the band? Collaborative? Lyrics or music first?

Murphy: Speaking for myself, it opened a door that had been shut for a long time. And there were a ton of ideas on the other side. Not all of those ideas made the cut, but I felt like the rebirth of Say ZuZu jolted me out of a long sleep, songwriting-wise. A big part of that, for me, is having Jon Nolan as a sounding board and someone who will level with me about what’s working and what’s not. And, frankly, it’s exciting to write a song knowing that all of the band members are going to bring their ideas to the mix. I feel lucky. As for the process - I usually have the music and lyrics start to come together at the same time. And then I tweak/edit/process.

Nolan: Not gonna lie - when I closed my studio, I was fairly heartbroken about music, and struggling to find a new vision for how to weave it into my life. This Strolling Bones Record deal and the opportunity it gave us to reconnect didn’t result in an easy, well-greased pathway back to regular songwriting for me, but man, now I’m BACK. And it feels great. I am feeling more joy about music than I have in a long time, and I’m so grateful to George and Strolling Bones.

My process: For years I followed the fairly common “come up with music I like and mumble-sing until melody, phrasing, and (finally) a lyrical tidbit to expand upon” method. For me, that process has largely run its course. It has been really, really helpful to take the pressure off myself and not feel like I have to push the lyrical side. Musically - knock on wood - I have never hit a wall for sounds that excite me. It took allowing myself to write lyrics whenever they come to really unblock my process. Feels so much better.

Seacoastonline: You were recently approached by a record label to release some backlog items as well as a new studio record. What gives? When you’re looking for that sort of thing it’s so hard to find, but when you’ve all but put things to bed, opportunity knocks. First, tell us about the engagement and all the how and why there. Second, what’s the schedule for release(s).

Nolan: The short-ish version is, 20 years ago George Fontaine, the owner of New West Records, happened upon us at a show in Athens, Georgia which began a two-year-long experience of nearly signing with them three times. There was always a lot of good feeling between us and George and his label, but suffice it to say the timing was not right and we parted amicably. In the summer of 2020 George contacted me, and basically told me that he had re-purchased “Bull” and “Every Mile” during the pandemic when we were all sitting at home, and that he was pissed that he hadn’t put them out, and could we try again now? An entirely lovely and generous and unexpected turn of events. Strolling Bones Records is basically a subsidiary of New West and our new label along with our fine label mates who are mostly found in the South. You definitely can’t predict what is going to happen next. Suddenly we find ourselves working with a new manager, we have a great lawyer (they exist!) and now we are working with the incredibly thoughtful and accommodating people at Strolling Bones! ZuZu = Luckiest group of dudes ever? Our new record, “No Time to Lose” comes out late Feb of ‘23, and if I’m correct, there will be a re-release of “Bull” in Q2, and then “Every Mile” in Q3 - vinyl releases and digital.

Seacoastonline: You just dropped a compilation of sorts. How’d you pull that one together? Is it fun to revisit the old material? When you listen to it do you hear ways to improve things, or are you happy with the time stamp as it is?

Murphy: It was interesting to put together the retrospective collaboratively with the folks at Strolling Bones Records. Some of the songs we insisted on, because they are core to our identity. Some of the songs they pushed for, which was actually cool to see. Hearing the material in a totally different order, but mastered together, makes me hear it with new ears. For a lot of songwriters - Bob Dylan being the most famous example - their songs are always in draft form, even when fans hear the album versions as definitive. So, yes, I always hear things I would change or add. But I’m also proud of the work we’ve done, and it’s validating to have a record label want to curate an experience of the older material for people who haven’t heard us before.

Seacoastonline: What’re the plans for Say ZuZu moving forward? Still playing it casual, or are you plotting to make some moves? The kids are older now! Is it time to recharge Bull and take to the road?

Nolan: I think somewhere in the middle! We’re all going to find out together, but definitely we plan on playing - and not just in New England. We’ll be heading to Baltimore and DC before the end of the year. North Carolina and Georgia in early ‘23 for sure.

Seacoastonline: In general, why music? Why do you seek it? Why do you create it?

Murphy: Objectively, music is one of the things that people - individuals, communities, cultures - use to build meaning around. Intellectually, I get that. But, emotionally, I’m still trying to figure out the answer to that question myself. When I see my kids make music, or make art, it’s like that line from John Lee Hooker’s father in “Boogie Chillin’”: “It’s in him, and it’s gotta come out.” I don’t question it when I see them do it. I think the monetization of culture harms us as creative people - we start to expect a payoff or something. I’m not immune to that. Which is why, at 50, I’m still wondering why I make music and what it’s all about.

Nolan: Ah yes - the classic Hislop question! Current working theory: I wonder if it’s always been about joy and wonder and a desire for connection. When I take my eyes off that, it gets bumpy. Let’s go with that.

Seacoastonline: You’re hitting the ol’ Stone Church on the 17th - your musical stomping grounds (as well as your hometown, of course). What excites you about the show? How long has it been? What can folks expect when they roll in to share in the moment with you?

Nolan: Yeah! We played our farewell shows there in 2003, and a very quickly turned around reunion show there in 2004. But we haven’t played there since then. So nearly 20 years since Say ZuZu has played there, and, man, it does feel like coming home. That’s especially the case given what good stewards Mike and Cheryl Hoffman were in their time as owners, and I’m really excited about Jamie and her stewardship along with her partner Jack. It’s just a lovely, lovely time for the Stone Church and great timing for us to return. The exciting part about coming back to the Stone Church is immersing our music in that special energy that I think a lot of us who have history with the church equate with it. Let’s be clear, we are going to always be playing songs from our historical catalog, but we mean to be a living breathing musical force moving forward. We still have something to say. This is the beginning of our saying it. We know what we think of the new material, but the real excitement is finding out with all you guys think about it, and experiencing it together as we break in the songs.

Seacoastonline: You’re also kickin’ it at Bull Moose earlier in the day. When was the last time you did an in-store gig?! What do you appreciate about record stores? What purpose do they serve in these contemporary digitally fueled times?

Murphy: It’s possible that the last in-store gig Say ZuZu did was when Rock Bottom Records closed down in Portsmouth. Or when we played SXSW in 2001 and did an in-store at Cheapo in Austin.

Nolan: It has been a minute since we played an in-store. Bull Moose recently moved, and we get to be the first in-store they have at their new location which feels pretty special. Mick and his compatriots over there have been incredibly sweet and accommodating also. It also feels pretty great to play an employee-owned record store. Pretty cool thing they did doing that.

Seacoastonline: What’s changed since the Press Room gigs? Feel like you mentioned that James stepped away … What are the implications there?

Nolan: The Press Room shows capped a pretty intense period of songwriting, pre-production, recording and rehearsal. It was a really good. But make no mistake we all came out on the other side pretty emotionally and physically exhausted from the effort. It was basically nearly a year of getting ready to start, not a year of actually starting. The work of being in a band can really be "work" even when you aren’t famous and are going on a six-month world tour. At least when you want to do it the way that we do it. No one person’s life trajectory is a straight line, neither is Say ZuZu’s. James not playing with the band is a related and sad outcome for sure, but we don’t have plans to replace him. One bass playing friend mentioned admiring the way James “held things down,” and I concur. In any case, all is well at the Nolan family table. It’s a thing that happened. Playing some with Geoff Taylor this summer - he’ll be our number one dude - confirmed that we’re still us, and that feels good.

Seacoastonline: Looking back, what’s something you know now that you wish you’d known when you all started the band back in the '90s? How would that knowledge have either informed your path forward at the outset, or will inspire your approach starting at this very moment?

Murphy: We felt a sense of urgency that was entirely self-imposed. I think I might tell us to slow down a little, take a breath, and be open to some of the great advice we ignored. Revisiting these old records - getting them ready for reissue, remastering them, re-reading the lyrics, re-reading the liner notes - is a trip. We were such a peculiar mix of earnest and goofball. Like we were trying to hide our vulnerability at times with inside jokes. I would *definitely* tell us to talk less on stage, and to trust the music. I think this time around we are leaning into the latter.

Nolan: Yeah, the talking. Argh! (Laughs.) I have a lot of empathy for historic-ZuZu and the bad choices we made back in the day. But to share the wisdom I feel like I mined out of the past: For those who feel compelled to play original music … Play the music that feels closest to the burning hot center of your artistic self and let the chips fall where they may. If you play stuff that isn’t you, you’ll attract fans that don’t like … you. Be you. Let the people who like it keep coming. It won’t be easy, but people who start to listen, want to listen to you.

Seacoastonline: Anything else?

Nolan: I just shipped twin daughters off to college. Buy our records.

Rory mcilroy poised to push panic button on 'pretty jarring' pga tour tv numbers, share this article.

say zuzu tour

SAN ANTONIO — The fatigue is real. Talk of growing the game has officially been put on the backburner.

In the aftermath of nearly two years of PGA Tour-LIV Golf feuding, Rory McIlroy said Wednesday he isn’t surprised that many golf fans have become disenchanted, but he sounded more than just mildly concerned about the ramifications that appear to be manifesting in recent viewership numbers.

Speaking in San Antonio as he prepares for his last tuneup before the 2024 Masters , McIlroy said the raw data from PGA Tour telecasts is alarming, as one in every five former TV viewers has decided to shut the product off.

“I know this isn’t a be-all, end-all, but if you look at the TV ratings of the PGA Tour this year, they’re down 20 percent across the board,” he said. “That’s a fifth. That’s big. I would say the numbers on LIV aren’t great either in terms of the people tuning in. I just think with the fighting and everything that’s went on over the past couple years, people are just getting really fatigued of it and it’s turning people off men’s professional golf, and that’s not a good thing for anyone.”

While the four-time major champ is focused on his own game , especially in light of his failure to crack the top 15 in any of his first five starts of 2024, he’ll be keeping an eye on how TV viewers respond to the first major of the year in Augusta. But then he believes an even truer indication will come from the other three majors on the schedule.

“It’s going to be really interesting to see how the four major championships do, or even the three because put Augusta aside, I think that sort of lives in its own world,” he said. “It will be really interesting to see how the major championship numbers fare compared to the other bigger events because there’s an argument to be made if the numbers are better and you’ve got all the best players in the world playing, then there’s an argument to say ‘OK, we need to get this thing back together.’

“But on the flip side, if the numbers aren’t as good, it’s an argument to still say we need to put everyone back together because people are losing interest in the game even if they don’t want to tune in to the four major championships.”

Many assumed that additional exposure to the game through PGA Tour Live on ESPN+ and other online avenues would lead to a rise in viewership numbers, all while more people are playing the game in record numbers and consuming more golf content online.

But McIlroy, who in the Netflix documentary “Full Swing” described himself as the closest player on Tour to PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, said recently that it’s been difficult to see some of the world’s best players not matching up on a consistent basis.

“That’s where I said like things need a correction and things are unsustainable because I’m close with NBC and the people that really care about these things and the people that tune in to watch golf,” he said. “You know, 20 percent’s a pretty jarring number this year.”

Florida airboat flips sending 9 passengers into gator-infested waters, operator arrested

say zuzu tour

An airboat tour in the Florida Everglades capsized sending passengers overboard on Friday, officials say. This happened when the airboat's driver took a sharp turn to try to see an alligator in the water, according to multiple reports.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said three units responded to a waterway near Coopertown The Original Airboat Tour in the Everglades Friday afternoon. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, nine people and the operator all fell into the water when the boat took a quick turn.

By time MDFR arrived, everyone had climbed out of the water, and only one patient was treated for injuries on the scene.

But the boat's operator was arrested after FWC said he did not have the proper documentation necessary to operate the boat. His employer, Coopertown, did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment Monday morning.

Boat passengers say they were afraid of alligators in water, reports state

Passengers told Local 10 the boat operator was trying to get a closer look at a nearby alligator when the airboat flipped.

“My first thought was panic, I was afraid for my wife and family members, and then I thought about the alligator,” passenger Jose Maldonado told Local 10.

NBC Miami said the boat was partially submerged in the water and some passengers were standing on top waiting for help.

Alligator mating season runs from early April until the end of June, when the Sunshine State sees more activity and they become more aggressive.

Millions stolen from money storage facility in Sylmar on Easter Sunday, sources say

Michelle Fisher Image

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles Police Department and the FBI are investigating the theft of tens of millions of dollars from a money storage facility in the San Fernando Valley on Easter Sunday, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Sources told Eyewitness News the theft happened at a GardaWorld facility in Sylmar.

The thieves broke into the facility undetected - without setting off alarms - by going through the roof and somehow getting into the money storage area, which may have been a vault, according to officials briefed on the investigation.

The company that owns the building did not discover the massive theft until Monday morning.

AIR7 HD was over the facility Wednesday and captured an apparent hole on the side of the building that was boarded up. A pile of debris was right next to it. It's unclear if that damage is related to Sunday's theft.

LAPD says the agency is working with the FBI on the case. It's unclear exactly how much was stolen, but it's believed to be one of the biggest heists in L.A. history.

The sophisticated heist leads authorities to believe that a crew of some kind is responsible for the brazen break-in. No suspect information was immediately available.

The theft comes nearly two years after as much as $100 million in jewels and other valuables were stolen from a Brink's big rig at a Southern California truck stop. The thieves haven't been caught.

ABC News and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Lok Janshakti Party (Ramvilas) president Chirag Paswan

Ahead of the Lok Sabha election, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ally Chirag Paswan has got a major blow as 22 leaders of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) tendered their resignations. The aggrieved leaders said they resigned because they did not get tickets for the Lok Sabha polls.

Some of the notable names who have resigned from Paswan's LJP are Renu Kushwaha, former MLA and national general secretary of LJP, Satish Kumar, state organization minister Ravindra Singh, Ajay Kushwaha, Sanjay Singh, and State General Secretary Rajesh Dangi.

Chirag Paswan's party is fielding candidates in five seats, including Hajipur. The other seats where Paswan's LJP is contesting in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections are Vaishali, Samastipur, Khagaria, and Jamui.

Lok Sabha elections 2024: 22 leaders quit Chirag Paswan's party, say tickets were given to outsiders

I n an upheaval within the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), 22 party leaders have tendered their resignations simultaneously while expressing anger at not getting tickets for the Lok Sabha elections.

Among the notable figures who stepped down include former minister Renu Kushwaha, former MLA and national general secretary of LJP, Satish Kumar, state organisation minister Ravindra Singh, Ajay Kushwaha, Sanjay Singh and State General Secretary Rajesh Dangi.

The resignation wave appears to stem from grievances within the party ranks, with allegations surfacing about the distribution of tickets in exchange for money.

On her resignation from the party, former MP Renu Kushwaha said, "Ticket should be given to the party workers instead of people the from outside. Tickets were given to the outsiders which means that able people are not there in your party. Are we the labour class people in your party who will work for you, make you a leader? Our devotion was questioned when an outsider was given a ticket. We are not here to serve as labourers for the party."

Miffed over not getting the ticket, former MLA and national general secretary of LJP Satish Kumar asserted that the rebel LJP leaders will now support the INDIA bloc.

"When such important elections are there in the country, the LJP Supremo has given tickets to such people that the party workers are stunned. The people who used to raise slogans 'Hail Chirag Paswan', day and night and hoped for a 'new Bihar' have been betrayed, their aspirations were crushed. Now, to save the country, INDI alliance has to be supported. Now we will support the INDI alliance,"

The party's Organisation Secretary Ravindra Singh claimed that Chirag Paswan "sold the tickets". "Chirag Paswan has played an emotional game with the people of Bihar. When he got five seats due to our hard work, he sold all those tickets. People of Bihar will give him an answer," he said.

The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is contesting five out of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar - Vaishali, Hajipur, Samastipur, Khagaria and Jamui.

Bihar will see polling in seven phases. The first phase will be held on April 19, the second phase on April 26, the third on May 7, fourth on May 13, fifth on May 20, sixth on May 25, and seventh on June 1.

Gen Z workers say they get better career advice from ChatGPT

A career coach, your boss, that colleague who has changed jobs a ton of times: these might be your first port of call when you think about someone to give you great career advice. But younger workers are mixing things up when it comes to where they get their counsel.

That’s not too surprising. Gen Z currently accounts for about two billion of the world’s population, will form 27% of the workforce by next year, and what they want from work is markedly different from what their older colleagues do.

From the 49% who say their job is central to their sense of identity, younger workers value work-life balance , remote working and flexible leave as their top priorities when looking for a job.

What also sets them apart is they are far quicker to jettison a job if it’s not suiting their needs; in fact a survey of U.S. students found that they could change jobs up to 10 times between the ages of 18 and 34.

That’s not all: this cohort of workers is values-led, and wants to work for companies where diversity and inclusion are priorities. Value matching matters too, with 55% researching a company’s environmental impact and policies before taking a job offer, with another 17% changing jobs or sectors due to climate concerns.

Traditional career advice is out

Given all that, it is hardly surprising that Gen Z isn’t too keen on traditional career advice routes too. According to a study from Workplace Intelligence and INTOO , some of this is because they’re simply not getting support in work, with one in five employees saying they never have career conversations with their manager.

Sixty-three percent feel their employer prioritizes productivity over career development, and three quarters say that they’ve received bad career advice — with many saying this came from their own manager.

Their solution? ChatGPT. Open AI’s generative AI platform has seen colossal adoption since its November 2022 launch, and 47% of Gen Z workers say they get better advice from the chatbot than their manager.

That’s a problem, because while ChatGPT can be helpful for a range of work-related tasks such as helping you personalize resumes for job applications, its data may be out of date or not relevant to the questions younger workers are asking. The free version, ChatGPT 3.5, is only trained with data up until January 2022, while the paid subscription version, ChatGPT 4, has information up to April 2023.

But that’s still a year out of date, and if you ask if it can provide advice, it will reply, “For career-related advice and decisions, it’s often best to consult multiple sources, including experts in the field, career counselors, and trusted websites or publications. Additionally, considering your own unique circumstances, goals and preferences is crucial in making informed decisions about your career path.”

That in itself is good advice, but for the 53% of the workers surveyed in Workplace Intelligence and INTOO’s survey who say their manager is just too busy to talk to them about their career, it’s not much help.

If you’re struggling with a lack of clear career progression and goal-setting and help is not forthcoming, a move to a company where your professional development will be supported could be a great idea.

  • 22 leaders from Chirag Paswan's LJP resign over not getting ticket
  • Rebel leaders allege Chirag Paswan 'sold' tickets to outsiders
  • Rebel leaders say they will support Opposition INDIA bloc

Twenty-two leaders from Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) have resigned after they objected to not getting tickets for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, dealing a major blow to the party days after it sealed a pre-poll alliance with the BJP.

The leaders claimed that Chirag Paswan "sold all Lok Sabha tickets" and said they would now support the Opposition INDIA bloc, news agency ANI reported.

Among those who stepped down include former minister Renu Kushwaha, former MLA and LJP's national general secretary Satish Kumar, state organisation secretary Ravindra Singh, state general secretary Rajesh Dangi and party leaders Ajay Kushwaha and Sanjay Singh.

Renu Kushwaha lashed out at Chirag Paswan for giving tickets to "outsiders", according to ANI.

"Tickets should be given to the party workers instead of people from outside. Tickets were given to outsiders, which meant that competent and hardworking people were not getting their due. Do we belong to the labour class that we will work for you and make you a leader," Kushwaha said.

Satish Kumar said the rebel LJP leaders will now back the INDIA bloc in the Lok Sabha polls. He accused Chirag Paswan of betraying the people of Bihar.

"When such important elections are coming up, the LJP chief has given tickets to such people that the party workers are stunned. The people who used to raise slogans 'Hail Chirag Paswan', day and night and hoped for a 'new Bihar' have been betrayed. Their aspirations have been crushed," he said.

"Now to save the country, we will now support the INDIA bloc," he said.

Voicing similar sentiments, Ravindra Singh alleged that Chirag Paswan "sold the tickets".

"Chirag Paswan has played an emotional game with the people of Bihar. When he got five seats due to our hard work, he sold all those tickets. People of Bihar will give him an answer," he said.

On March 18, the BJP sealed a seat-sharing alliance with the LJP and Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United). According to the deal, the LJP will contest five of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar -- Vaishali, Hajipur, Samastipur, Khagaria and Jamui.

The following day, Chirag Paswan's estranged uncle Pashupati Paras resigned as a minister from the Union Cabinet.
