Madeira Great Walks
The pearl of the Atlantic
Daily Distance
Daily elevation gain.
100 - 600 m
8 Days & 7 Nights
An incredible hiking tour along with one of the most beautiful Portuguese islands, the Pearl of the Atlantic! If you are a hiking lover, this is the ideal opportunity to discover Madeira and its unique characteristics. Madeira was created by volcanic eruptions and erosion throughout the years. This shaped the island by creating bizarre rock formations and deep gorges. The best Madeira trails are full of wonders, and you will discover them as you hike on the mountains, cliffs, and levadas. The levadas are part of an extensive network of small irrigation channels with gentle slopes, very typical of Madeira island, and a perfect path for any adventurous hiker! Breathtaking sceneries and natural highlights, such as the natural pools of Porto Moniz and the Laurissilva Forest (both UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites), will leave you stunned and amazed! It's your time to explore this hiking paradise!

The tour concludes with a pleasant drive back to Funchal, leaving you with memories of Madeira’s stunning natural beauty and rich cultural tapestry.
Should I Take a Tour Of Madeira East or West?
Choosing between a tour of Madeira’s East or West depends on your interests. The East offers dramatic landscapes and cultural experiences, while the West is known for its stunning natural scenery.
Exploring the East of Madeira offers a delightful blend of experiences, combining the rich cultural and historical tapestry of Funchal with the natural beauty and traditional charm of places like Santana and Garajau.
🤿 The Garajau Partial Nature Reserve is a protected marine reserve and a haven for diverse marine life, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts.
Key attractions in the West include the Cabo Girão skywalk , offering spectacular views from one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, and the charming fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, famously painted by Winston Churchill.
The West also boasts beautiful natural swimming pools in Porto Moniz and the scenic drive through the Laurisilva forest , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t forget about the black sands in Seixal.
Both sides provide unique experiences, with the East focusing more on cultural and historical aspects, while the West offers more in terms of natural beauty and outdoor activities.
Which part of Madeira is most beautiful?
The beauty of Madeira is a matter of personal taste, but the Eastern region often stands out for its captivating natural attractions. This part of the island combines a unique charm with stunning landscapes, making it a favorite for many visitors.
The sunny Calheta enchants with its golden sandy beaches and marina, providing a perfect spot for relaxation and water sports. The Laurisilva forest offers lush, green landscapes and a haven for hikers and nature lovers.
Then there is Porto Moniz , renowned for its natural lava pools, a unique and mesmerizing natural wonder formed by volcanic activity. You’ll also find levadas or irrigation channels providing scenic walking paths.
In my opinion, the best side is the West side, but not everyone would agree.
Do you need a car in Madeira?
Yes — Madeira is doable without a car, especially if you book a Madeira day trip departing from Funchal to get you to any of the more off-the-beaten-trail places.
There are also public buses that can get you to various points around the island, but it can be much harder to get to specific spots with public transportation.
You need to either rent a car or take a tour to explore Madeira’s most stunning sites.
Is driving difficult in Madeira?
Yes and No — driving in Madeira can vary depending on your driving experience and comfort with specific conditions.
Driving in Madeira might be tough if you’re a bit nervous behind the wheel. The roads are curvy and really steep, and most cars have manual gears, which can be tricky on hills.
Also, many tourists drive around, so accidents can (and do) happen. Parking can be a real headache because so many cars are everywhere.

Trip Levels
With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Madeira Island Walking Trip highlights
- Mild temperatures & year-round walking opportunities, even in the heart of winter
- Walk along Madeira's unique ‘levadas’ system – the only place in the world
- Treat yourself to a mix of 4-star and smaller traditional properties in beautiful surroundings
- Take in the dramatic mountains, deep valleys and rugged Atlantic coastline
- Summit Pico Ruivo (1862m) - Madeira's highest peak
- Admire the exotic and tropical flora
- Choice in walks on several days
Our team have devised a walking itinerary that exemplifies the best that Madeira has to offer. Traverse the terraced hillsides and follow local trails and ‘levadas’ through the peaceful, idyllic countryside and ultimately reach the island’s highest peak (Pico Ruivo, 1862 metres). Stay at a mix of 4-star and smaller traditional properties in beautiful surroundings and learn more about the island through our detailed route notes.
Closer to Africa than Europe, the Portuguese island of Madeira is blessed with a mild and equable climate all year round. Volcanic in origin, Madeira’s rugged interior rises abruptly to over 1800 metres, with forests of fragrant pine, eucalyptus and laurel flanking its jagged peaks. You will find colourful flowers and trees in bloom at all times of the year but the island is ideal for a walking holiday for another reason: its elaborate network of ‘levadas’ (irrigation channels), which wind their way across gullies and steep slopes to more than 2000km/1250 miles of channels and over 40km/25 miles of tunnels.
*An extra day is recommended in the bustling little capital of Funchal so that you will have time to visit a Madeira wine lodge, explore the colourful markets and the famous botanical gardens, enjoy the superb fish restaurants or spend more time at the picturesque Monte neighbourhood. Another extra day can be requested in Santana where you can enjoy a beautiful levada walk.

We grade the tour as 'Moderate' (grade 3). We do not recommend this trip if you suffer from vertigo or balance issues. As far as fitness goes the walks should present no difficulties for anyone in reasonable condition and accustomed to walking in hilly areas. When walking in the high mountains you may encounter mist (low cloud) and it is necessary for those days to be experienced with compass and map. Short sections of some walks may be loose and slippery underfoot and a head for heights is an advantage on quite a few occasions. On any day you can if you prefer opt out of the walking and travel with the baggage. Day Stages: 9-17km per day, with ascents of up to 800m, descents of up to 1000m. 3.5 to 7 hours walking per day.

The following errors occured:, frequently asked questions, how fit do i have to be when walking in madeira.
To enjoy your walking holiday in Madeira, reasonably good cardio fitness and the ability to walk up and down some steep slopes in warm conditions will be needed.
? Will vertigo be a problem?
Vertigo will be an issue for severe and moderate sufferers. Some of the trails are quite narrow along or on the side of the levadas (irrigation channels) and there are some drops, usually on one side. Some walks go through tunnels where you may get wet feet.
? Is it worth having an extra day on Madeira?
Definitely, we would recommend to plan at least an extra day in Funchal and perhaps one in Machico.
? Is getting to the start and from the end difficult?
Very easy! You will be transferred to the first hotel in Machico and from the last hotel in Funchal back to the airport.
? Can weather effect my walking days in Madeira?
Wet weather can occur any time of year, but especially in the spring. Trails can be closed at short notice due to landslips, in which case our team will do their best to find an alternative route for you and change the programme slightly.

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.
That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.
We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.
We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.
How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.
Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.
We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email [email protected] and we will get to work right away.

Madeira Island trails (classic version)
A short distance from the African coast, “The Flower Island ” sits serenely in the ocean. Madeira boasts breath-taking landscapes and just recently it was elected the best European island destination for the 6th time by the World Travel Awards. Madeira’s notorious climate is composed of different microclimates. The north of the island has quite a lot of rainfall and therefore a particularly lush vegetation, while the south of Madeira is significantly drier and is characterized by more hours of sunshine. To enable the southern half of the island to benefit from the rainfall in the north, sophisticated irrigation systems – the open levadas – ensure water supply to the plantations and fields. The spectacular hiking routes, following these levadas, are one of the many reasons that make Madeira so special for self-guided walking. Come and discover all of Madeira’s secrets: walk along the levadas and the coastal paths offering panoramic views, see traditional style villages, terrace cultivation, beautiful flowers, gorges, the Laurissilva (cloud) forest, waterfalls and natural pools.

Levada Walks in Madeira
Madeira is unique for its accessible and extensive watercourses.
"Levada" is a Portuguese word that derives from "levar", which means to carry and is very loosely interpreted as "carriageway". A more correct translation would be mini-canal. The levadas were originally created in the 16th Century to bring water from the rainy northern aspect of the island to the sun soaked south where crops such as sugar, bananas and grapes grow. The original settlers chipped away at the cliffs and tunnelled through solid rock to make channels and tunnels all with a very slight slope so that the water meandered down towards its destination. To this Day, the Levadeiro remains one of the oldest Jobs on the island. These men are in charge of opening and shutting the gates which control the flow of the levadas.
In total there are 2500 kms of levadas on the island and many were created even before the first roads!
Levada walks are very popular in Madeira as the way is cleared by maintained paths running along the water making it a calming experience with a scenic background of nature at its most lush. It also allows access to many parts not available to those driving. A truly iconic and enjoyable experience.
Here are the most popular walks in Madeira:
Serra D'Água Valley
Rabaçal / Risco / 25 Fontes
Paradise Valley
Madeira Peaks
Ribeiro Frio / Portela
Maroços / Mimosa Valley
The Lakes of Madeira
Referta / Castelejo
Queimadas / Caldeirão Verde / Santana
Fanal / Assobiadores
Hidden Corners / King's Levada
Levada do Moinho
Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço
Caminho Real da Encumeada

Madeira is an island that has walking as part of its DNA. The people of the island developed a complex network of levadas (irrigation channels) to bring the high rainfall from the lush green interior of the island and spread it all over. The paths used to build and maintain the levadas form the bulk of what you will walk along.

Do I need walking boots in Madeira? - In a word, yes! If you are going to take a walking holiday in Madeira, then we would recommend hiking boots as opposed to walking shoes or sandals. The paths are well laid out and easy to follow; however, occasionally, the terrain can be rough, and to protect your ankles, we recommend walking boots. Also, Madeira is fond of cobbled streets that have been known to cause ankle injuries, so additional support is always a great idea.
What are Levadas in Maderia? - Levadas are irrigation channels built to bring water from the north slopes of Madeira, where it exists in abundance, to the south side of the Island. Levadas make for ideal walking paths as they explore the very heart of the Island, allowing for exploration where previously it would have been impossible.
How many Levadas are there in Maderia? - There are over 200 different levadas in Madeira, covering over 1,350 miles. Many of these visit incredible parts of the Island that would be difficult to visit in any other way than by walking there.
Is Maderia a winter destination? - Yes, because of its geographic location, Madeira tends to have much milder winters than mainland Europe, meaning that in winter temperatures can still be in the 50s, which mainly makes for pleasant walking weather.
What is Madeira famous for? - Madeira is firstly renowned for its fortified wines, traditionally known for being sweet and sticky, there are also some dry versions to enjoy with/after dinner.
When is the best month to visit Madeira? - Madeira is a year-round destination, though it should be noted that in the winter months, it is a little cooler. We would probably suggest April-June or September-December as the best times to visit Madeira. The summer months can be hot, and especially for a hiking tour, the spring and autumn provide perfect conditions.
