You Wear It Well: The Uniforms of Star Trek

Turns out, "dress for the job you want, not the job you have," might still be a phrase heard in the 23rd Century and beyond!

Star Trek: The Original Series

StarTrek.com

The Delta Shield. The colors: red, gold and blue. The form-fitting jackets and often black trousers. Even the confining jumpsuits. Star Trek uniforms have a special place in pop culture, equal in renown maybe only by the jerseys and full kits of certain sports teams. Let’s take a look at some of the uniforms over the years and what messages they are sending to the galaxy.

Star Trek: Discovery — Of Terran Capes And Crowns with Gersha Phillips

Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series

The TOS uniforms are arguable the most recognized and iconic of uniforms in the canon. They are the blueprint for all other uniforms in Star Trek . While they carry some of the elements from the “The Cage” unaired pilot episode — tunic-like top, Section colors, black capri-length trousers and boots — the cut and fit of the garments are narrower, the colors much sharper and for the women, no pants. Looking back from our vantage point the uniforms feel more inspired by the 1960s' mod culture, or the era’s British rock bands, not what a fleet of earth-based space explorers would be wearing in the 23rd Century. However, the athleisure vibe of it all was as portentous to our time as the TOS-inspired technology and gadgets that we use on a daily basis. Comparing these uniforms from the garments of other space traveling cultures seen throughout TOS is where you can really see the youthfulness of Starfleet. While Romulans’ uniforms echo the turtleneck silhouette, knit fabric and ultra miniskirts of Starfleet, the rigid textures, exaggerated shoulders, and the addition of a scarf or half vest overlays connotes a sense of the authoritarian militaristic society. Comparing the two looks, without context, you wouldn’t be at fault for easily assuming that Starfleet was the newest team in a galactic travel league.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation was all about the jumpsuit, with a touch of individuality. The best examples of this is Lieutenant Worf’s beautiful Klingon military sash or baldric and Lt. Troi’s flowing dresses and jumpsuits. The Next Generation also famously changed command colors from gold to red, ending a fan favorite “red shirt” trope from TOS. You see other examples of Starfleet uniform styles on the flagship Enterprise , including skants and tunics. The men’s TNG dress uniforms could even be worn as dresses due to their somewhat elongated line. However, from a design and storytelling point of view, the jumpsuit's utility is matched with the artful graphic design which evolves easily into the dress uniform’s elegance and formality.

Into the #Starchive Featuring Captain Picard's Uniform

We can see Starfleet’s evolution of mission and the number of lightyears traveled in the precision of the TNG uniform. Interestingly, the need to continuously mirror the delta design — in the shoulders, sleeves, even in the transition from bodice to trousers both section colors, front and back — is like a monogram. For the many species Jean-Luc Picard and his crew will make First Contact with, this uniform conveys a simple message: We are Starfleet.

Star Trek: Enterprise

Star Trek: Enterprise

We cannot talk about jumpsuits without talking about Star Trek: Enterprise ! The uniforms on this series most closely represent what our beginnings of further flung space travel might look like. In fact, rather than trying to create something that feels brand new and “science fiction,” the Enterprise crew looks like a team from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The command colors are placed in a simple elegant line framing the shoulders ending, of course, in a point or delta shape. The jumpsuits have the wonderful addition of actual pockets, which actually makes you wonder where all the pockets have been all of this time. Hallelujah — there will be pockets in the future! The jumpsuits are reminiscent of a behind-the-scenes pit or union crew, workers who are laying the important foundation for the future. Yet, similar to workwear from the 20th Century, there is an elegance of how a non-gender specific garment function matches and enhances its form. A more advanced culture may be more fancily dressed, but no one can jump on a nacelle rigging faster than Charles “Trip” Tucker, III.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Star Trek: Voyager

These series combine the streamlined look of the TNG jumpsuit with the function of Enterprise series jumpsuits — jackets, pockets, and pleated trousers. The colors: command red, operations gold, and sciences blue continue with the addition of a mock turtleneck undershirt in grey, which evolves later in a uniform variant where the section colors are the turtleneck and the upper bodice detailing is a quilted grey. Grey as a standard color for Starfleet uniforms appears in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and seen again in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, discussed below.

Into the #Starchive with Captain Janeway's OG Uniform

Deep Space Nine uniforms are particularly interesting in the way all clothes are, in relation to the places and people we associate these outfits with. What makes DS9 unique is the variety of dress everywhere on the starbase, from the Bajoran military uniforms with even more emphasis on the upper bodice and shoulders than Starfleet’s uniforms, to the regalia of the Bajoran monks. In the context of running a space station, Starfleet uniforms need to balance a message of both authority and hospitality. In a sea of colorful people and outfits on the space station’s promenade, the Starfeet uniforms’ relative dark color scheme is the easiest to recognize.

Star Trek: Discovery (Seasons 1-2)

Star Trek: Discovery -

At first glance the Discovery uniforms ignore all previous series. However, there are nods to past series that reveal themselves. While no longer jumpsuits, the jacket, and trouser-leggings of Discovery are blue and thus similar to the Enterprise series. As the series is set between Enterprise and TOS this for me, as a fan, a welcome nod. Most startling is the loss of the iconic red, gold and blue color scheme, it is seen nowhere unless you count the reddish-bronze for Operations. Out of all the series the Discovery uniforms are the most formal. Comparing them to other series, they in fact look like the uniforms of people who have been traveling throughout the galaxy for some time. The form-fitting suit with metal rather than rainbow colors seem to say, “We mean business.” Discovery leans into a militaristic style, more than with previous series. From the rigidity of the jacket to the stripes at the shoulder the uniform appears to, if not welcome , then at least expect conflict and war. The subtle pips on the delta shield could be interpreted to mean that while rank is important, the crew of the Discovery is a family — a band of brothers and sisters equally important and valuable as a captain or admiral. The biggest hint to where this series is going is the asymmetry introduced into Starfleet uniforms for the first time. The eschew collar which creates a delta shape in the front of the face (invoking TOS’ uniform) is closed by a bold metallic zipper that goes from the left of the neck to the center at the jacket bottom. These off-center details could be interpreted to mean that unexpected outcomes are coming!

Star Trek: Discovery (Season 3)

Star Trek: Discovery -

A conversation about Star Trek uniforms would be incomplete without some mention of Season 3’s far-flung future Federation uniforms. It’s not hard to see where these new uniforms took inspiration from other Trek series. In addition to the grey color seen most notably in Star Trek: The Motion Picture , the quilted-ridges at the top of the jacket mirrors that of Deep Space Nine ’s uniforms, and the asymmetry at the bottom of the jacket reminds us of Discovery ’s earlier uniforms. Season 3 even brings back the red, gold, and blue for command, operations, and sciences, this time in a bold sculptural color block down the right side of the jacket. Its appearance seems to state that knowing you and your colleagues’ place in the Federation and on your ship of duty is paramount for rebuilding. This is no time for subtlety. While this same meticulous design could also be overcompensation for the reduction of the Federation’s place, power, and purpose in the 32nd Century it could also be the Federation’s way of “dressing for the job you want (the premiere intergalactic union of planets), not the one you have.” And that’s a tip we can all take with us, to the board room or the Ready Room.

Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The Enterprise Uniforms

It's been long road getting from there to zippers.

Star Trek Enterprise Uniforms

Set more than two centuries before its franchise predecessor Star Trek: Voyager, Enterprise explored humanity's first steps into the final frontier, with a fresh new look for the Star Trek Universe.

Despite co-creators Rick Berman and Brannon Braga's desire to set the prequel show apart from the previous series (down to removing "Star Trek" from the title), the producers nevertheless brought numerous veterans from the franchise's behind-the-scenes roster back for Enterprise. Among the returning personnel was costume designer Robert Blackman, the man responsible for every Starfleet uniform since Star Trek: The Next Generation's third season.

Blending NASA's modern day flight suits with Star Trek: The Original Series-style division color piping, Blackman described Enterprise's uniforms as making the characters "look a little bit more like cowboys in space." An almost total departure from the already iconic lineage of costumes he created for TNG, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and the ongoing film series, Enterprise's uniforms were what Blackman called "historic-futuristic" garb.

Easily conveying the show's placement in the Star Trek timeline, Enterprise's uniforms were carefully tailored to 22nd century aesthetics and 21st century sex appeal. From the pocket-covered, blue Starfleet jumpsuits to T'Pol's various Vulcan attire, Enterprise's uniforms were highly detailed, highly stylish, even highly controversial entries into the Star Trek costume canon.

Here are ten sartorial secrets from the 22nd century that you need to know.

10. 5 Year Mission Patches

Star Trek Enterprise Uniforms

Harkening back to Robert Blackman's idea that 22nd-century Starfleet uniforms should hew closer to modern-day flight suits than the sleek, minimalist look of the 24th century, the iconic Combadge of the Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager-era was out.

And NASA-like mission patches were in.

Sewn to the left shoulder of the Enterprise crews' uniforms, the NX-01 mission patch was designed by scenic artist Wendy Drapanas. Featuring the recognizable silhouette of the first warp five starship, Enterprise's mission patch ostensibly replaced the familiar delta established all the way back in Star Trek: The Original Series. However, along with recalling NASA's tradition of creating unique patches for each mission, Enterprise's mission patch also referred back to TOS' occasional dalliance with unique Starfleet insignias for each ship in the 23rd century fleet.

While the Enterprise art department created numerous unique patches for the 22nd century – including patches for the NX-02 Columbia, Starship Intrepid, the MACOs, Starfleet Command, Starfleet Security, etc. – one mission patch was actually a subtle homage to real life space travel. In season one's "Silent Enemy", Starfleet Lieutenant Mark Latrelle can be seen wearing the diamond-shaped patch of NASA's modern day mission control, a sneaky nod to Enterprise's obvious inspirations.

I bought your Enterprise pattern to try and make myself a reasonable representation of the jumpsuit as those sold on the net didn't seem to be quite there (except Anovos). Having never before attempted to sew together anything other than a cushion I was a little unsure of the outcome. I must say though that your tutorials are excellent and what I created was very good to the point that I was approached a few times at the 50th Anniversary convention as to where I had bought the jumpsuit from, I of course told them home made from a Bad wolf pattern. Thank you for an excellent product, well pleased. David

The Spacesuits In Star Trek: Enterprise Put A Brutal Strain On The Series' Stars

Star Trek: Enterprise uniforms

The uniforms on the original "Star Trek" might be some of the most casual, comfy military kits ever seen. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) essentially wore a lightweight, tight-fitting long-sleeve t-shirt, a pair of black slacks, and some versatile patent leather shoes. Apart from his department color — the gold hue indicated his status as a command officer — and the rank stripes around his wrists, the uniform didn't seem to have any additional practical functions. It didn't have pockets, so communicators and tricorders needed to be carried as accessories.

One might assume that "Star Trek" uniforms were made from an ultra-advanced, super-breathable material that allowed its wearer to have a more evenly regulated body temperature, but that is mere headcanon; such details were never revealed on the show. It also wouldn't be true for the Enterprise's female crew members who were typically seen in minidress uniforms and black leggings.

Trek uniforms only got more uncomfortable-looking from there. The movies saw Kirk and Co. in red uniforms as thick as Christmas sweaters, and "Next Generation," "Deep Space Nine," and "Voyager" all featured ill-fitting jumpsuits that constantly needed readjusting. Also, if they were jumpsuits, did one have to strip all the way down to use the bathroom while on duty?

A happy medium was finally reached with the uniforms on "Star Trek: Enterprise," a show set a century prior to "Star Trek." They were still jumpsuits, but they finally looked comfortable, functional, and had many, many pockets. Very NASA.

But there were still a few costume issues. In the invaluable oral history book  "The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From The Next Generation to J. J. Abrams." edited by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross, "Enterprise" actor Dominic Keating pointed out that the show's high-tech space suits were massively heavy.

Star Trek by way of NASA

The costume designers on "Enterprise" were clearly aiming for a midpoint between modern 21st-century NASA space suits and 23rd-century Captain Kirk uniforms. The "Star Trek" department colors were present on the "Enterprise" jumpsuits, but as mere colored shoulder accents. Otherwise, most characters wore all blue. The Vulcan first officer T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) was given textured, form-fitting catsuits to wear. Because of the lascivious underpinnings of the show , audiences also learned that everyone wore loosely draped, lightweight grey underwear with no support.

But the space suits were the biggest issue for the cast. To add to the NASA textures of the show, characters were frequently seen in astronaut outfits, complete with helmets and massive gloves. According to Keating, those space suits were heavy, which became a problem when an actor has to shoot all day long. He explained:

"The sets, the effects, the camera stuff is so much more difficult, which for the actor translates to a lot more hours, many more takes, and so on. The spacesuits look great, but, my god, they are heavy. I'm strong. I pitied the female cast members. You carry around a five-pound bucket of water for a couple of hours. The helmets alone are 16 pounds and they're not connected to the bodysuit, so it's your neck that's carrying that thing."

When Kirk wore a spacesuit, it looked awkward but was at least made of lightweight material, like mosquito netting. One might wonder why Starfleet didn't continue using personal force fields as space suits, as seen in "Star Trek: The Animated Series." That seemed to be the most comfortable option. But then, personal force fields would require a pretty massive power source, so perhaps they proved too unreliable.

Bearing the weight of being a Starfleet officer

Keating had to rely on some special self-calming techniques to get through the shooting day wearing his space suit. He said:

"I do yoga, so in the claustrophobia of the suit, I would sit down and just close my eyes and go into an almost transcendental state until I heard the bell when you have to stand up again."

Luckily, scenes in the space suits were few and far between on "Enterprise," and characters mostly got to wear the blue jumpsuits.

For "Star Trek: Discovery," the approach to designing the space suits was just as concerned with functionality as aesthetics, and a lot of effort went into making them resemble how space suits might actually look in the future . Those suits were built for long-term interstellar use and featured lights, thrusters, and multiple tools that can be used in a vacuum. The costumes were also made of lighter materials than the "Enterprise" suits, so actors were likely more comfortable in them.

An issue that savvy viewers might notice, however, is that most helmeted space suits in movies and on TV feature special in-helmet lighting to illuminate the actors' faces. While these miniature lights can assure a clear shot and visible acting, they don't make any sense from a practical, in-universe standpoint. It would be terribly difficult to do one's job in space if one constantly has multiple tiny LED lights shining directly in their eyes.

But the facial lighting is one of those dramatic sci-fi conceits — like artificial gravity or universal translators — that Trekkies merely have to come to accept.

Why Star Trek Uniform Colors Changed From the Original Series to Next Generation

The uniforms on Star Trek have changed over time, but for reasons that make a lot more sense behind the scenes than on the Enterprise bridge.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Cast

Even if you don’t know an El-Aurian from an Illyrian, even if you can’t tell the original Enterprise from the Enterprise-D, you’re probably familiar with one of the fundamental rules of Star Trek : redshirts always die.

Unlike many of the popular misconceptions about the series (Kirk doesn’t actually chase women, for example), the redshirt stereotype does have grounding in the show. Over the course of three seasons in The Original Series , 26 characters wearing red tunics died, as opposed to 15 wearing gold and blue combined. But that trend stopped with the Star Trek movies, and continued to fall away with The Next Generation and the spinoffs that followed.

Why, you ask? Because the costume colors signify a crewman’s role on their particular ship, and the color scheme changed between TOS and TNG .

Although some Trekkies hate to admit it, Star Trek didn’t really have much in the way of canon in its first few episodes. Leaving aside the infamous grinning Spock in the original pilot, it took several episodes to decide on the name of Starfleet or the Prime Directive. The same was true of the uniforms, as demonstrated by the luscious green shirt that Kirk sometimes sported.

Ad – content continues below

By the end of the series, however, the three main colors solidified into the following divisions: those in command wore gold, people such as Kirk and Sulu. Science officers and doctors, namely Spock and Bones, dressed in blue, while everyone else had red shirts. And by everyone else, that includes engineers like Scotty and security personnel, which is why they tended to get killed.

But as is so often the case with all things Trek , the uniforms weren’t entirely what creator Gene Roddenberry had in mind. Most notably, the gold uniforms were actually intended to be green, but read on camera as the color that we know today. During production of the never-released follow-up show, Star Trek: Phase II , Roddenberry wanted continuity between TOS and the new series, not only in terms of the cast, which mixed Kirk and Sulu with newcomers, but also production. In particular, Roddenberry brought back his original series costume designer William Ware Theiss.

However, when production shifted and Phase II became Star Trek: The Motion Picture , Theiss was replaced by Robert Fletcher, who designed costumes for the movie crew through Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home . Fletcher maintained some of Roddenberry’s vision for TMP , which tried to match ’70s aesthetics by giving the crew pastel pajamas. But when Nicholas Meyer took over for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Fletcher designed military-inspired uniforms to match the director’s naval warfare vision.

Although most Trekkies prefer the Meyer movies, Roddenberry hated the militarization of Starfleet and, equally important, resented the way his franchise was taken from him. So when Roddenberry regained some power for The Next Generation , he sought to right the ship, so to speak, by making Starfleet explorers again. And with it, he brought back Theiss.

For the most part, Theiss succeeded where Roddenberry and Fletcher failed in TMP . The TNG uniforms feel like ’80s versions of the ’60s original, especially after they were revised in season 3. However, with the emphasis on division colors came a confusing switch. Once again, science officers and doctors wore blue, but command now wore red while operations wore gold. Also, there’s the skant, but only Lower Decks talks about that now.

So why did the colors change? Once again, the answer is simple and almost mundane. Patrick Stewart apparently didn’t look commanding enough in yellow, while Brent Spiner , in his pale Data makeup, didn’t look good in red.

Roddenberry and the producers may have also been amenable to these changes because of the public’s changing perception of the aesthetic of Star Trek at the time. It was the massive success of Star Trek IV that gave Roddenberry the green light for TNG , and in that movie the crew wore the same civilian clothes that they sported in The Search for Spock , but during the first three Trek movies, Kirk wore red (as did Spock and the rest of the crew, because everyone wore red in Meyers’ more militarized uniforms).

So in the eyes of casual fans, the Captain wore red. And even Trekkies had seen enough of Kirk in red that the idea didn’t seem outlandish.

The Trek uniforms have been altered many times since. TNG and Deep Space Nine later limited colors to the shoulders, a look continued in Voyager . The TNG movies then introduced darker uniforms in Star Trek: First Contact , with division colors on the underliner, a look adopted by later seasons of Deep Space Nine .

These stories adhere to the division colors from TNG , but whenever the franchise goes back to pre- TNG era — including the J.J. Abrams reboot movies or Strange New Worlds — the TOS colors come back into play. Even the prequel series Enterprise , in which the crew of the NX-01 wears blue jumpsuits with TOS division colors on the piping. And then there’s Discovery , which began with blue uniforms and a different division color scheme, but that show started out as its own thing, anyway.

Rest assured, writers both official and on the internet have offered in-Universe explanations for the evolution of the costumes. But the best explanation is that Star Trek , as an ongoing story over six decades old, had evolved and mutated over the years, sometimes in ways that don’t make sense. And as long as some unnamed operations ensign gets killed now and again, that’s just fine.

How Star Trek Enterprise Changed The Franchise For The Better

  • Star Trek: Enterprise, despite its initial flaws, has gained influence and admiration over the last 19 years.
  • The show's 22nd-century setting aimed for innovation but often felt like a retread of previous series.
  • Enterprise set the stage for key events in Star Trek canon and continues to impact the franchise today.

19 years after its cancelation, Star Trek: Enterprise has become an influential Star Trek series that now serves as the canonical springboard for all of Star Trek that follows. A prequel set in the 22nd century, Enterprise was the fifth Star Trek TV series and the last of the era of Star Trek produced by Rick Berman that launched with Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. Enterprise was the only show of the TNG era to last 4 seasons and its cancelation in 2005 marked the end of Star Trek on TV for 12 years. However, the prequel co-created by Berman and Brannon Braga has since earned new admirers in the last two decades and the Star Trek franchise has recontextualized Enterprise 's greater importance.

One of the issues with Star Trek: Enterprise during its broadcast run on the UPN Network is that it came at the tail end of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Star Trek: Voyager each having epic 7-season runs. By the time Enterprise debuted in 2001, there had been over 500 hours of Star Trek on TV and 9 movies, resulting in 'franchise fatigue.' Enterprise 's 22nd-century setting was meant to give the series and characters a more contemporary feel, but the prequel often felt like a retread of its more innovative predecessors . Indeed, Enterprise 's core trio of Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), T'Pol, and Chief Engineer Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer) was an obvious rehashing of Star Trek: The Original Series ' Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Dr. McCoy (DeForrest Kelley).

Star Trek: Enterprise's 20 Best Episodes, Ranked

Star trek: enterprise's mistakes hurt the show in fans' eyes, and then there was enterprise's series finale....

Enterprise broke the Star Trek mold in several ways that Trekkers didn't appreciate , starting with its maligned pop theme song "Where My Heart Will Take Me" by Russell Watson, and excising the term "Star Trek" from its title in Enterprise seasons 1 and 2. Enterprise also presented the Vulcans as unwelcome obstructionists to the human race's attempts to reach for the stars. Star Trek: Enterprise 's attractive young cast , especially Jolene Blalock's T'Pol and Connor Trinneer's Trip Tucker, were blatantly hyper-sexualized with as much nudity as network TV would allow. And then there was "These Are The Voyages...", Star Trek: Enterprise 's controversial series finale that made Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Commander Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) the focal point instead of Enterprise 's actors.

Star Trek: Enterpris e's series finale killing off Trip Tucker is still resented by fans almost 20 years later.

However, Star Trek: Enterprise did improve in its latter two seasons; the prequel embraced Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' s serialized storytelling with its Xindi arc in season 3, and, in its final season, Enterprise began setting up pivotal events of Star Trek canon such as the Romulan War and the founding of the United Federation of Planets. A big positive move was passing the role of Star Trek: Enterprise showrunner in season 4 to the late Manny Coto , a lifelong Star Trek fan who hewed the prequel closer toward Star Trek: The Original Series . Sadly, eroding ratings and a regime change at UPN doomed Star Trek: Enterprise .

Until Star Trek: Discovery premiered in 2017, Star Trek: Enterprise was known as 'the show that killed the franchise.'

Enterprise Is Canon In Star Trek's Prime And Kelvin Timelines

J.j. abrams' star trek movies opened the door to enterprise references.

Captain Archer's NX-01 is recognized as the first Starship Enterprise that helped pave the way for the United Federation of Planets in Star Trek 's Prime Timeline, but Enterprise is also inviolate history in the Kelvin timeline of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies . The alternate reality of the Kelvin timeline was started by the destruction of the USS Kelvin by a time-traveling Romulan mining ship from the 24th century in 2233 — 80 years after the canonical events of Star Trek: Enterprise . Regardless of everything that happened and was changed after the Kelvin reality was created, the past events of Enterprise still hold in both Star Trek timelines . Star Trek (2009) even has a joke where Scotty (Simon Pegg) mentions "Admiral Archer's prized beagle," a nod to the NX-01 Enterprise Captain's beloved pet named Porthos.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2's crossover episode called back to Enterprise with reverence.

Star Trek Beyond had even more homages to Enterprise . The villainous Krall (Idris Elba) was actually a mutated human starship captain named Balthazar Edison, and it directly referenced the M.A.C.O. space marines introduced in Star Trek: Enterprise . Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew also escaped the planet Altamir aboard the USS Franklin , a 22nd-century Enterprise -era NX-class starship similar to the vessel commanded by Captain Archer. In Star Trek on Paramount+, the refitted NX-01 Enterprise was shown in Star Trek: Picard season 3's Fleet Museum, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2's crossover episode called back to Enterprise with reverence, and Star Trek: Lower Decks has included multiple in-jokes about Star Trek: Enterprise throughout its 4 seasons.

Star Trek: Enterprise's Blue Uniforms Influenced Discovery, DS9, And Voyager

Enterprise is a star trek fashion innovator.

Star Trek: Enterprise 's blue jumpsuits with colored trim to denote rank are recontextualized as the beginning of Star Trek 's standard uniforms . Enterprise 's blue uniforms were adopted by Star Trek: Discovery a century later, canonizing blue as the color worn by Starfleet until the agency switched to the multi-colored uniforms seen in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: The Original Series . Enterprise 's blue uniforms also work as the precursor to the red uniforms Starfleet would adopt in the Star Trek: The Original Series movies in the late-23rd into the mid-24th centuries. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager's jumpsuit uniforms are retconned to be inspired by 22nd century Starfleet's jumpsuits seen in Enterprise.

In the 32nd century, Star Trek: Discovery finally changed to multi-colored uniforms, leaving behind the primary blue that Enterprise trailblazed.

Enterprise Is Canon In Star Trek's Mirror Universe

Enterprise's mirror universe episodes set up discovery, tos & ds9's.

The Mirror Universe was introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series' "Mirror, Mirror" and continued in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Discovery . Enterprise season 4 delivered two of the best Mirror Universe episodes , the two-parter "In a Mirror, Darkly." Set entirely in Star Trek' s dark alternate timeline, "In a Mirror Darkly" was also a sequel to TOS ' "The Tholian Web" that explained how the Mirror Jonathan Archer briefly took command of the Constitution Class USS Defiant, which time-traveled from the 23rd century and jumped dimensions.

The 23rd-century USS Defiant is not to be confused with the USS Defiant seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

"In a Mirror, Darkly" canonically explains how the Terran Empire used the advanced technology of the Defiant to conquer the galaxy, and the rise of Empress Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) in Enterprise 's Mirror Universe saga directly leads into the 23rd-century reign of Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) on Star Trek: Discovery . Enterpris e's Mirror Universe story was so popular with fans that had Star Trek: Enterprise returned for season 5, the plan was to do more multi-part episodes set exclusively in the Mirror Universe. In recent years , Star Trek: Discovery revitalized the Mirror Universe, but Disco built upon the indelible mark Enterprise made in the history of the fan-favorite alternate reality.

Discovery's Future Earth Reverted Back To Star Trek: Enterprise's Era

United earth is back in the 32nd century.

Before Captain Archer helped usher in the United Federation of Planets, which he then oversaw as President, United Earth was the governing body of the Terran homeworld in the 22nd century. In Star Trek: Discovery season 3, Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery were shocked to learn that the Earth had broken away from the Federation and reverted to the Enterprise -era United Earth government , with the United Earth Defense Forces replacing Starfleet. A thousand years after Archer's historic voyages aboard the NX-01 Enterprise, Earth became an isolationist planet and cycled back to how it was during Star Trek: Enterpris e's time after The Burn devastated the galaxy and caused the Federation's collapse. United Earth rejoined the Federation at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 4 .

The President of United Earth in Star Trek: Discovery is played by politician Stacey Abrams.

Enterprise's Temporal Wars Are More Important Than Ever

Star trek: discovery and strange new worlds referenced the temporal wars.

Star Trek: Enterprise introduced the concept of the Temporal Cold War , which started in the 31st century as multiple factions, including the Federation, the Klingons, the Suliban, and the Xindi, attempted to weaponize time and alter history to their advantage. The Temporal Cold War was brushed aside during Enterprise 's later seasons, but Star Trek: Discovery season 3 resurrected the concept and also revealed that full-blown Temporal Wars were fought by the Federation . The Temporal Wars even affected the Kelvin timeline as a time soldier named Yor not only jumped from the 24th to the 32nd century but also crossed over from the alternate Kelvin universe.

The Temporal Wars caused the Guardian of Forever (Paul Guilfoyle) to leave its homeworld and hide on Dannus V near the Gamma Quadrant to avoid factions attempting to use it as a weapon.

Changes to the timeline seen in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds a re a result of Enterprise 's Temporal Wars. Strange New Worlds ' series premiere revealed that the timeline of the Eugenics Wars was moved up from the 1990s to the 21st century and may even have been fused with the global apocalypse of World War III. In Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2 , "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow", Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh confronted a time-traveling Romulan operative named Sera (Adelaide Kane) who planned to ensure the Federation never formed and tried to kill Khan Noonien-Singh (Desmond Sivan) when he was just a boy in 2023 Toronto.

Star Trek: Enterprise Has Found A New Audience Thanks To Streaming

Fans appreciate enterprise now more than when it aired on upn.

In the last 19 years, Star Trek: Enterprise found a new audience on streaming services like Netflix and Paramount+. Star Tre k fans who skipped Enterprise during its broadcast run on UPN and new viewers have reassessed the Scott Bakula-led prequel. As such, Enterprise is more respected and appreciated now than it was when the series was new. This has led to a renewed interest in seeing Star Trek: Enterprise 's actors and characters return in Star Trek on Paramount+'s series or even a full-blown revival of Enterprise .

Star Trek: Enterprise is no longer disregarded as 'the show that killed the franchise.'

Sadly, a Star Trek: Enterprise live-action reunion is unlikely due to myriad issues. However, it is possible that Enterprise 's actors can voice their characters in animated series like Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy . Meanwhile, Connor Trinneer co-hosts The Shuttlepod Show podcast, which relives the glory years of Enterprise by interviewing cast members and actors from other Star Trek series. Trinneer also voiced Trip Tucker for the first time since 2005 in an episode of Star Trek: very Short Treks. Star Trek: Enterprise is no longer disregarded as 'the show that killed the franchise.' Thanks to new audience support and the fact that the makers of current Star Trek s hows are fans themselves, Star Trek: Enterprise has now taken on vital importance and indelible influence in the greater Star Trek universe .

Star Trek: Enterprise is available to stream on Paramount+.
