Tina Turner (born November 26, 1939) is the stage and recording name of Anna Mae Bullock, a critically acclaimed, world renowned R&B and soul singer-songwriter, actress and dancer, hailing from Nutbush, Tennessee, U.S.

Tina Turner’s earliest musical excursion came when she began singing in her teens under the name Little Ann, and later became a backing singer for Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm. It wasn’t long however before Anna Bullock’s soaring vocals stole the show and in 1960 the group transitioned into the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Alongside Ike, Tina earned critical acclaim and commercial success with the singles “A Fool in Love”, “River Deep – Mountain High”, “Proud Mary”, and “Nutbush City Limits”. The singles earned the duo both national and international esteem, and resulted in a slot opening for the Rolling Stones. In 1974 plagued by Ike’s drug habits and tumultuous behaviour Tina Turner left the group to pursue a solo career.

A year later in 1975 Turner was offered the role of the Acid Queen in The Who’s film version of “Tommy”. Despite providing an unforgettable performance, the film was all too forgettable, and soon passed from public’s consciousness. Turner’s first few solo releases “Acid Queen”, “Rough” and “Love Explosion” all charted poorly and could all too well have deterred a singer of a lesser disposition. However with backing from the likes of Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry and David Bowie, Tina Turner bounced back and released the Al Green Cover “Let’s Stay Together” in 1983. The single catapulted Turner into U.S. and a number of European charts, and resulted in the singer inking a three-album deal with Capitol Records.

The album “Private Dance” was subsequently released in June 1984 charting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Selling over 11 million copies, the album spawned the Grammy-winning, No. 1 single “What’s Love Got to Do with It”, along with “Better Be Good to Me”, and “Private Dancer”. Following the release Turner played the role of Aunty Entity in the film “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” for which she later won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress. In 1986 the singer released the single “Typical Male” after which Turner’s music moved away from the upper echelons of the chart. The albums “Foreign Affair” in 1989, “Wildest Dreams” in 1986 and “Twenty Four Seven” in 2000 earned strong reviews from critics and all saw respectable chart placing. The best-of compilation “All the Best” arrived in 2004, followed by a performance alongside Beyoncé at the 2008 Grammy Awards.

Live reviews

Tiny Turner is arguable the best female performers ever! The power and tone of her voice, the energy of her performance and her sheer love for the stage. Very few have got gigs rocking the way Tiny Turner could! She has sold more concert tickets than any other live performer EVER! She has enjoyed success as a singer, dancer, writer and as an actress. She has received an enormous amount of respect from peers, many honours and awards, including 8 grammy awards and record sales of over 100 million! After breaking into the music scene in 1960 whilst part of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue she soon became known worldwide as an unbelievable live act! With amazing songs such as “Proud Mary”, “River Deep- Mountain High”, “A Fool in Love” and “Nutbush City Limits” there was no doubting they’re ability to get a crowd going. She certainly had something quite special, an ability to bring a room alive! To get the room dancing! Even, at the age of my nan, she would be rocking a stage at a stadium sized gig! Considered by many as the great female rock singer ever, the ‘queen of rock and roll’ and a performer who is still performing at the highest level after over 50 years!

Still need convincing? Ok! Once again! Tiny Turner has sold more concert tickets than any other live performer EVER!!!!!

There are few vocalists who are completely incomparable due to the uniqueness of their tones, 80s soul/pop siren Tina Turner is very much one of those. She has a whole plethora of hits and is an icon within her own right and despite the hair not being quite outrageous these days, the stage show very much is. She is an impassioned performer even in her later years and really knows how to work the stage, her accompanying musicians and of course the adoring crowds.

The amount of legendary tracks included tonight could make your head spin 'River Deep, Mountain High' 'Private Dancer' and 'We Don't Need Another Hero' all feature along with covers of iconic rock musicians proving Tina very much lives and breathes the genre. A highlight was a downtempo rendition of 'Addicted To Love' by Robert Palmer which allows that sultry, raspy vocal to really shine. It is of course the finale of 'The Best' and 'Proud Mary' that gets the whole crowd singing, dancing and cheering as the fabulous songstress struts from side to side of shade proving she cannot be considered to be past it.

Tina Turner: legendary rock’n’roll singer dies aged 83

Turner who initially found fame in a turbulent musical partnership, became one of the biggest acts in the world as a solo artist and one of the defining pop icons of the 1980s

  • Tina Turner tributes pour in – latest updates

Tina Turner, the pioneering rock’n’roll star who became a pop behemoth in the 1980s, has died aged 83 after a long illness.

She had suffered ill health in recent years, being diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and having a kidney transplant in 2017.

Turner affirmed and amplified Black women’s formative stake in rock’n’roll, defining that era of music to the extent that Mick Jagger admitted to taking inspiration from her high-kicking, energetic live performances for his stage persona.

After two decades of working with her abusive husband, Ike Turner , she struck out alone and – after a few false starts – became one of the defining pop icons of the 1980s with the album Private Dancer. Her life was chronicled in three memoirs, a biopic, a jukebox musical , and in 2021, the acclaimed documentary film, Tina .

In a statement on Wednesday night, her publicist Bernard Doherty said: “Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”

The life and career of the 'queen of rock' Tina Turner – video obituary

In 2018, scholar Daphne A Brooks wrote for the Guardian: “Turner’s musical character has always been a charged combination of mystery as well as light, melancholy mixed with a ferocious vitality that often flirted with danger.”

Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on 26 November 1939 and raised in Nutbush, Tennessee, where she recalled picking cotton with her family as a child. She sang in the tiny town’s church choir, and as a teenager talked – or rather, sang – her way into Ike’s band in St Louis: he had declined her request to join until he heard her seize the microphone during a Kings of Rhythm performance for a rendition of BB King’s You Know I Love You.

After her vocal talents became apparent, Ike gave her the name Tina Turner – and trademarked it in case she left him and he wanted to replace her in his act. He quickly became abusive: when Turner tried to leave the group early on after having got a sense of his mercurial character, he hit her with a wooden shoe stretcher.

Tina Turner performs with Beyoncé at the 50th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, February 2008.

“My relationship with Ike was doomed the day he figured out I was going to be his moneymaker,” Turner wrote in her 2018 autobiography My Love Story. “He needed to control me, economically and psychologically, so I could never leave him.”

She made her recorded debut under the name with the Ike and Tina Turner single A Fool in Love in July 1960, which broke the US Top 30 and started a run of respectable chart success. But it was their live performances that made them a sensation. Ike toured the Ike and Tina Turner Revue aggressively on the Chitlin’ Circuit – including in front of desegregated audiences, such was their commercial power. In 1964, they signed to Warner Bros imprint Loma Records, which released their first album to chart: Live! The Ike & Tina Turner Show.

In the second half of the 60s, the duo were courted by many of rock’s biggest names. Phil Spector produced the 1966 single River Deep – Mountain High; they supported the Rolling Stones in the UK and later the US, and stars including David Bowie, Sly Stone, Cher, Elvis Presley and Elton John came to their Las Vegas residency.

They were a chart-making, Grammy-winning force in the 1970s – a run that came to an end when Turner left Ike, who had been consistently violent and unfaithful, in 1976. Her last single with Ike was Baby, Get It On, though the song made it onto her second solo album, Acid Queen, a reference to the character she played in the 1975 film adaptation of the Who’s rock opera Tommy.

In the divorce, finalised in 1978, Turner came away with just two cars and the rights to her stage name. “Ike fought a little bit because he knew what I would do with it,” she said in the documentary Tina.

Turner, who had already released two solo records, continued pursuing a solo career, though it would take until she released her fifth album, 1984’s Private Dancer, for her to supplant the old image of the shimmying rock’n’roller – and escape premature relegation to the oldies circuit – with one of a powerful, mullet-sporting, leather-clad pop icon.

Tina Turner performs in March 1987 in Paris during the first concert of a world tour.

In the documentary Tina, she described Private Dancer as her debut. “I don’t consider it a comeback,” she said. “Tina had never arrived.”

Turner credited Buddhism and particularly the practice of chanting with positively affecting her life in the 1980s. Outside music, she starred in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome opposite Mel Gibson in 1985. She published her first memoir, the global bestseller I, Tina, in 1986, which was later adapted in to the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do With It? starring Angela Bassett as Turner. In 1995, she sang the theme tune to the James Bond film GoldenEye.

Turner announced her retirement in 2000, a year after releasing her final solo album, Twenty Four Seven, though she would return to the stage in 2008, performing at the Grammy awards with Beyoncé, and for a final tour to mark 50 years of her career.

That was conclusively the end. “I was just tired of singing and making everybody happy,” she told the New York Times in 2019 . “That’s all I’d ever done in my life.”

Turner collaborated on the musical Tina with Phyllida Lloyd, which premiered in 2018 and won Laurence Olivier and Tony awards for its respective West End and Broadway runs. “This musical is not about my stardom,” Turner said of the production. “It is about the journey I took to get there. Each night I want audiences to take away from the theatre that you can turn poison into medicine.”

Turner often said she did not relate to the “invincible” persona that others put on her. “I don’t necessarily want to be a ‘strong’ person,” she told the New York Times. “I had a terrible life. I just kept going. You just keep going, and you hope that something will come.”

In 2020, a remix of her 1984 hit What’s Love Got to Do With It? by the Norwegian producer Kygo made Turner the first artist to have a UK Top 40 hit in seven consecutive decades. In 2021, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist, 30 years after Ike and Tina Turner’s induction.

Turner is survived by her second husband, German music executive Erwin Bach. They married in July 2013 after 27 years together and lived in Switzerland. In 2013, Turner renounced her US citizenship to become a Swiss citizen.

Her first child, Craig Raymond Turner, died in July 2018. Last year, Turner said that following her other son Ronnie’s death at the age of 62 that he “left the world far too early”. She is survived by two of Ike Turner’s sons, Ike Turner Jr and Michael Turner, whom she adopted.

In 2020, Turner told the Guardian that despite having some serious health problems, the last 10 years of her life had embodied her ideal vision of happiness.

“True and lasting happiness comes from having an unshakeable, hopeful spirit that can shine, no matter what,” she said . “That’s what I’ve achieved, and it is my greatest wish to help others become truly happy as well.”

A look back on Tina Turner and The Rolling Stones through the years

Even when the Stones had a great influence on Tina’s career, it also happened the other way round. In fact, along James Brown , she’s the one who Mick Jagger got some of his best dance steps from. It all started back in 1966, when with the success of songs like River Deep, Mountain High in England, Ike & Tina Turner were invited to perform with the Stones as an opening act of the band’s UK tour.

A message from Mick, Brian, Keith, Charlie and Bill (1966): “Hi, Here we are, on the road again. We are all very excited about this tour, it’s been nearly a year since our last tour of England and we have really missed it… We’ve tried to get together a great bill for this tour, and we know you’ll enjoy the fantastic Ike and Tina Turner Revue, which we saw some time ago in the States. We thank you for coming to see us tonight and hope you enjoy yourselves, ’cos that’s the general idea” In November 1969 the Stones asked Ike and Tina once more to open their American tour, which raised their profile among young rock audiences three years later. The 1970 concert film Gimme Shelter featured the performance of I’ve Been Loving You Too Long , and the anniversary edition of the album Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! , released in 2009, featured the entire opening set performance.

The US tour by The Rolling Stones in 1969 began in November of that year. Ike and Tina Turner, Terry Reid, and B were present. B. King as the supporting acts, with Chuck Berry filling in on some dates.

The tour was referred to as “history’s first mythic rock and roll tour” by rock critic Robert Christgau and “one of the benchmarks of an era” by rock critic Dave Marsh. The tour was named one of The 50 Greatest Concerts of the Last 50 Years by Rolling Stone magazine in 2017. “Opening for the Stones were B.B. King and then World War Three, also known as Ike and Tina Turner….“

Janis Joplin unexpectedly joined Tina on stage for the final song, “Land of 1.000 Dances” at the concert on November 27 at Madison Square Garden in New York while she was in the audience. Then next year, in 1970, Ike & Tina recorded, Honky Tonk Women , their first song from the Stones’ catalog, which was released on the album Come Together . Tina and her manager Roger Davies concentrated on developing her solo career after she split from Ike, while she also performed cover versions of their songs.

Twelve years later the Stones invited Tina once more to open for them for three shows at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford in 1981 while they were on tour in the country to support their then-new album Tattoo You . She joined the band onstage during Honky Tonk Women in addition to her own set as an opening act at the Stones’ shows at he Brendan Byrne Arena, East Rutherford, New Jersey on November 5, 6 and 7.

Following her comeback, Tina collaborated with Mick and Keith numerous times, including the 1985 Live Aid festival (when Mick and Tina duetted after Jagger’s question to the audience “ Alright. Where’s Tina? “) the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the 1989 International Rock Awards .

Later on, in 1988, Tina also joined Mick on two of his solo shows in Tokyo (March 23) and Osaka ( March 27 ) to duet on Brown Sugar , It’s Only Rock’n Roll and Honky Tonk Women.

Tina Turner Upstaged Everyone

tina turner first tour

Before Tina Turner became a pop star, she was a rock pioneer. Turner, who died this week at the age of 83, got her start at 18 years old, frequenting the Manhattan Club in St. Louis to watch Ike Turner’s famed Kings of Rhythm perform. Ike recruited her as a backup singer, and two years later she was the main attraction of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, which scorched up and down the Chitlin’ Circuit, playing highly charged soul and rhythm and blues. The teens who would eventually front the British Invasion — Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Robert Plant, and Rod Stewart, among others — soon started studying Tina’s act, borrowing her dance moves, hair tosses, struts, and fearless attitude.

As the ’60s rolled along, Ike and Tina’s repertoire expanded to include songs from the very same artists they influenced. Tina’s ability to step into tracks written by white men who were inspired by Black acts like Tina felt revolutionary. More than that, she had the ability to embrace and embody just about any song thrown her way. Her voice was like a lion’s roar — an instrument full of power and vibrancy and fierceness at a time when women were supposed to be quiet and demure — and she danced with the grace of a gazelle (and always in the highest heels).

The story of Ike’s emotional and physical abuse toward Tina during those years is well-documented. As is Tina’s post-divorce era, where she tried to reestablish herself as an entertainer, only for the industry to blatantly ignore her talent. But by the mid-’80s, she had become an international superstar, and was singing with the likes of Mick Jagger and David Bowie. To pay tribute to Tina Turner’s place among (and beyond) the rock pantheon, here are some select performances where she outshined, out-danced, and out-sang either the original songs she chose to cover, or those who dared get on the same stage with her.

“Honky Tonk Woman” (1970)

Ike & Tina Turner opened for the Rolling Stones in ’66 and ’69. By then, the Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” was part of their live set (and later recorded for their 1970 album Come Together ). While the Stones’ version drips with sleaze and tawdriness, Tina’s is just plain sexy. Her delivery is warm and open and welcoming — everything Mick would want to be if he could. You feel Tina, while Mick is the louche guy at the end of the bar.

“I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” (1970)

The first glimpse many viewers had of Tina Turner performing live was in the Rolling Stones’ 1969 film Gimme Shelter , a harrowing account of the band’s U.S. tour that ended with the murder of Meredith Hunter at Altamont. One of Ike and Tina’s big numbers on that trek was a cover of Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.” Redding’s performance of this song was always a high point in his shows. Tina may not reinterpret or transform the original like she does other songs on this list but she is still able to match Redding’s pathos and intensity.

“She Came in Through the Bathroom Window” / “Get Back” (1971)

Here, Ike, Tina, and the Revue turn the Beatles’ Abbey Road suite into a full-blown soul shouter, complete with horn section and elaborate intro where the Ikettes and Tina dance away. In their hands it’s a completely different song, reshaping a short-but-important moment on record into a profound one on stage. It’s also a great example of both the Beatles’ songwriting abilities and Tina’s skills as a front woman. The Beatles sang those songs; Tina turned them into a performance.

“Proud Mary” (1971)

All due respect to John Fogerty, but the famous Ike & Tina rendition of “Proud Mary” makes you forget CCR wrote the original. In Tina’s version, she turns a nostalgic tale of an everyday working man originally sung with an unadorned, matter-of-fact twang into a blazing five-alarm rock-and-roll powerhouse. Her voice is quite literally rocket fuel here. It’s a mystery why anyone even tried to cover this after Tina did.

“Hot Legs” (1981)

Rod Stewart was the musical guest for the season opener of Saturday Night Live ’s seventh season in 1981. During rehearsals, he ventured downtown to see Tina Turner, who was then playing regular shows at the Ritz. (If you’re confused as to why Turner was doing small downtown club gigs, this was the era between her post-divorce efforts to re-establish herself and her second life as the Tina Turner the world would come to know.) Rod went backstage after the show and, according to Rolling Stone’s Robert Palmer, invited her to join him on TV for a rendition of “Hot Legs,” a Rod Stewart song that had coincidentally been part of her recent sets. Her SNL cameo later that weekend was like a bolt of lightning, as Tina delivered a series of deliberate, exuberant high kicks as if to illustrate what the song’s lyrics are referring to. Rod, who would later invite Tina to open for his 1981 U.S. tour, was clearly thrilled.

“Let’s Dance” and “Cat People” (1983)

There are many (possibly apocryphal) stories of the connection between Tina Turner and David Bowie. There’s the legend of how he told a room full of record executives that he couldn’t go to a party with them because he had to go see one of his favorite performers, which was how a limousine full of label honchos ended up at a Tina Turner show at the Ritz — and how she ended up getting her comeback record deal. There’s also the tale of Bowie putting the moves on Tina while wearing a Tina Turner wig. Either way, they clearly had mutual admiration, as you can see from this wonderful “Let’s Dance” medley.

But there’s a lot more to be said about Tina’s cover of Bowie’s “Cat People,” which she used as the opening number on her 1983 tour. “Cat People” was written for a Paul Schrader erotic-supernatural horror film of the same name, with music by Georgio Moroder. Bowie’s version is perfectly disembodied, but Tina turns it into a dramatic, soaring, quasi-rock opera, extending the vocals emotionally and technically in a way that Bowie himself would have struggled with. They are two completely different interpretations of the same song and yet both serve the material.

“State of Shock” and “It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll (But I Like It)” (1985)

Someone once tried to describe Tina Turner as the female Mick Jagger when the reality, of course, is that Mick is the male Tina Turner. There is no better proof of that theory than this performance. Most Gen-Xers can tell you where they were when Jagger inadvertently pulled Turner’s leather skirt off in front of a global audience. It was July 13, 1985, and Live Aid was winding down in Philadelphia when the two stars sang a medley duet of “State of Shock” and “It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll (But I Like It).” Viewers witnessed more than just a standout performance; they saw two artists basking in their respective glows, all while trying to simultaneously one-up each other vocally, emotionally, and physically.

“Acid Queen” (1975)

In 1975 , Tina was cast in Ken Russell’s film adaptation of the Who’s rock opera Tommy . She played the Acid Queen, one of the many characters the parents of the deaf, dumb, and blind boy seek out to try to restore their son’s senses. Here Tina uses her deep and rich vocals to flip Townshend’s bad trip of a song into a vivid, sensual psychedelic dream. The performance also helped create the Acid Queen template that would be used for future performances of the rock opera, from the 1993 Broadway production to the Who’s 1989 tour, where none other than Patti Labelle assumed the role. But Tina’s version is still the best and truest version of the song.

“River Deep, Mountain High” (1989)

There have been a million words written about the legendary “River Deep.” What matters the most is the quality of Tina Turner’s vocal performance — the warmth and the depth, the emotion and the shading, the control and the vibrato. It’s also an incredibly difficult song to perform live; the versions Tina sings with Ike and the Revue flatten it into a shape that worked for the dancing and gyrating efforts of Tina and the Ikettes. Meanwhile, the version above, taken from the encore jam at the 1989 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony (where Tina inducted Phil Spector, who produced the song), excels because Tina is visibly happy, with only her vocal performance to focus on. Paul Shaffer (from David Letterman band fame) introduces it by saying, “The evening would not be complete if we did not attempt the classical overture of all time. We’re going to give it a try; it’s a hard song.” He instructs them on the key (“We’re gonna do it in B flat.”) and cues the group, as Tina heads to the front, a white towel draped over her shoulder. Bruce Springsteen scurries to get himself clear, Little Richard holds the space right behind her, and Stevie Wonder’s playing keyboards — but it’s Tina’s focus, precision, professionalism, and power that carry this moment.

“Legs” (1993)

Yes, it’s an obvious reference toward Tina Turner’s second-greatest asset, but in her hands, this version of the ZZ Top hit, from their massive Eliminator album, is a delightful, infectious romp. The point of the ZZ Top version is its deadpan delivery and strongly syncopated beat, but she transforms it into a full-blown arena-size rocker. She even released a ten-minute live version as a B-side in 1988.

Flashback: Tina Turner Plays the Final Encore of Her Last Concert

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Eighty years ago today, Anne Mae Bullock was born in Nutbush, Tennessee. The daughter of a poor farm worker, Bullock moved around the country a lot in her early years, eventually winding up in St. Louis where she met a charismatic bandleader named Ike Turner in 1957. He invited her to join his group, changed her name to Tina, and eventually married her.

The horrific physical and emotional abuse she endured during her two-decade relationship with Ike has been documented in several books and the 1993 biopic What’s Love Got to Do With It. But as Rob Sheffield points out in his essay commemorating her 80th birthday , she managed to launch an incredible solo career in the Eighties. Against all odds, she enjoyed enormous success even though she was a good two decades older than most everyone else in the pop world.

Tina Turner ‘s tours after the release of Private Dancer in 1984 packed stadiums all across the world, especially in Europe. She launched a farewell tour in 2000 that truly seemed like the end of her live career, but in 2008 she went back out at the age of 69 to celebrate her 50th anniversary in music. It was a show that would have exhausted someone half her age, but Turner got through 90 shows and amazed every single night.

The run wrapped up May 5th, 2009, at the Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, England. Like every show on the tour, that concert featured a cross-section of songs from her entire career, including “Proud Mary,” “River Deep, Mountain High,” “Goldeneye,” and “Private Dancer.” She finished off the night with the relatively obscure “Be Tender With Me Baby” from her 1990 LP Foreign Affair. Here’s video of the big moment captured by a fan in the audience.

In the years following this tour, Turner survived a brutal bout of intestinal cancer and kidney failure. She survived the latter ailment because her husband, Erwin Bach, gave her one of his kidneys, and she’s currently thriving. Another tour, however, remains very hard to imagine. But with everything this woman has survived, it’s impossible to totally rule it out. If anyone on this planet can strap on high heels in their eighties and hit the road, it’s her.

Tina Turner After Ike: The ’80s Comeback

tina turner first tour

Guitarist and bandleader Ike had given Tina—originally named Anna Mae Bullock—an outlet for her impassioned vocalizing and mesmerizing performances in his band the Kings of Rhythm. Backed by him, a team of ferocious players and the Ikettes vocal group, Tina had already tasted considerable success, scoring such crossover hits as “A Fool in Love,” “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine,” the Phil Spector-produced “River Deep—Mountain High” and the pair’s Grammy-winning, million-selling total reimagining of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary,” which gave Ike and Tina their signature tune following its rise to #4 on the Billboard chart.

[In March 2018, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical opened at London’s Aldwych Theatre to rave reviews. The musical opened at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in November 2019 to equal acclaim.]

Ike and Tina had found favor not only with the R&B/soul crowd but with rockers as well—the Rolling Stones recruited what was by then called the Ike and Tina Turner Revue to open for them on their 1969 American tour and the couple became regulars on the rock concert circuit for the next several years: Their 1971 album Live at Carnegie Hall/What You Hear Is What You Get became the best-selling of their career; audiences were especially enthralled by Tina ’s onstage style, equal parts sensuality and raw, incendiary soul power.

What fans didn’t know at the time—but would find out later, in her autobiography, I, Tina— was that Ike had been increasingly abusive to Tina for years, both physically and emotionally. (When confronted with this later, Ike admitted to having slapped and punched his wife but denied beating her.) Married since 1962, Tina had finally had enough by the late ’70s; her well-being, she decided, was more important than hitching her career to that of a man who treated her so violently. She was done with him, and if she were to still have a career, it would sort itself out. (Ike Turner died in 2007.)

It didn’t take long for Tina Turner to find her way back—bigger than ever, unimaginably so. With MTV having launched in 1981, the very visual Tina Turner was a perfect candidate for heavy rotation. She’d eased into her solo career while awaiting the divorce papers, playing smaller Vegas venues to receptive crowds, touring abroad and appearing on TV shows in the States. Still, her recordings weren’t doing well at all, so when her new manager advised that she refashion herself as a rock star, as opposed to a traditional soul singer, Tina agreed. High-profile gigs in New York and L.A., including opening dates for the Stones and Rod Stewart, led to a new singles recording deal with Capitol Records (friend David Bowie having nudged the label a bit to make it happen).

Her first release under the new arrangement, a cover of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together,” reacquainted fans with the veteran singer, although it peaked only at #26. It was big enough for Capitol to offer Turner an upgrade to her contract though, a three-album deal, the first result of which was Private Dancer , recorded in London and released in June 1984. Wholly of its time, the masterpiece took off quickly, as did the single “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” written by Terry Britten and Graham Lyle and previously recorded by the British group Bucks Fizz. By September, aided by the ubiquitous video play, Tina Turner had herself her first (and only) #1 single. Two other singles, “Better Be Good to Me” and the album’s title track, followed “What’s Love…” into the top 10. Private Dancer itself, meanwhile, climbed to #3 on the Billboard album chart, where it lodged for 11 solid weeks, eventually selling over 20 million copies worldwide.

Watch Tina duet with Mick Jagger at Live Aid in 1985

Tina Turner attained a superstardom in the 1980s that far surpassed what she’d achieved with her ex-husband. Her tours were sellouts, and she took home an NAACP Image Award for her role in the film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome . In 1993, the film What’s Love Got to Do With It chronicled her professional rise amidst a very troubled marriage.

There were, of course, many other recordings, videos and sellout tours, until the 2000s, when she began winding down her involvement in the music business (her 50th anniversary tour in 2008 was also her farewell). Turner moved permanently to Switzerland, where she became a citizen in 2013, the same year she married her longtime companion, German music executive Erwin Bach. She published another book, My Love Story: A Memoir , in 2018.

Turner—born on November 26, 1939—will long be remembered as one of the most sensational, daring and courageous women in the world of rock ’n’ roll.

She sent a message to her fans on her 80th birthday

She was won every award imaginable, with 12 Grammys, selection to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (first with Ike, in 1991, and later as a solo artist in 2021) and a Kennedy Center Honor (2005).

Broadway in Norfolk’s 2024-25 season features the return of two of the region’s favorite musicals and four shows making their debut before Hampton Roads audiences.

The season starts in September with the return of the national tour of “Les Misérables” and another Tidewater favorite, “Mamma Mia!,” which will be in Norfolk next spring.

The lives of late, musical icons Tina Turner and Michael Jackson are showcased in “Tina — The Tina Turner Musical” and “MJ,” and musical adaptations of Hollywood movies will hit the stage with “Mean Girls” and “Pretty Woman.”

Season ticket packages for five of the six shows start at $263 and go on sale Tuesday at BroadwayinNorfolk.com . Sale dates for individual tickets will be announced closer to the performances. Each show will be performed at Chrysler Hall.

“Les Misérables”

“Les Miserables” is one of the world’s most popular musicals seen by over 130 million people in 53 countries. Set in 1800s France, it is a story of unrequited love, broken dreams and the strength needed for the road to redemption. Eight performances,  Sept. 10-15.

“Mean Girls”

Afraid of getting stung? Then, never cross a Queen Bee. The plot of the staged version of “Mean Girls” closely follows the script written by Tina Fey for the 2004 movie. A teenager who grew up in Africa is thrust into the messy and animalistic social landscape of the U.S. public school system where she contends with a trio of lionized high schoolers. Eight performances, Oct. 22-27.

“Tina – The Tina Turner Musical”

“MJ”

The musical centers on the making of Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour. The show, of course, features some of the King of Pop’s signature dance moves and thrilling songs. It also offers a glimpse into Jackson’s creativity and collaborative nature. Eight performances, Feb. 4-9, 2025.

“Mamma Mia!”

On the eve of her wedding, a woman invites three men from her mom’s past to an island to learn the identity of her father, whom she has never known. Meanwhile, everyone is singing songs by ABBA. Eight performances, March 4-9, 2025.

“Pretty Woman”

The story of a rich man falling in love with a destitute prostitute may not sound like the makings of rom-com gold but it is. In 1990, the movie “Pretty Woman” starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere became a smash hit and the Broadway show features the music of Roy Orbison. Eight performances, May 6-11, 2025.

Black Pop Artists Have Long Gone Country. Here’s a Brief History.

When Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” arrives next week, it’ll join a lineage of albums by stars including Ray Charles, the Pointer Sisters, Tina Turner and more.

  • Share full article

Beyoncé, in a black studded leather jacket and western-style tie, brings one manicured hand to the tip of her pale cowboy hat.

By Hank Shteamer

When Beyoncé confirmed that she would be going all-in on country music with “Cowboy Carter,” the second part of a project that began with her 2022 album “Renaissance,” conversation about pop artists turning to the genre — and how Black artists are received in Nashville — began to heat up.

Country remains a cloistered segment of the music industry where Black performers continue to face an especially challenging path — despite the fact that Black pioneers have been essential to the genre, including Lesley Riddle, known as Esley, a guitarist and folklorist who taught the Carter Family in the 1930s and Charley Pride , who scored more than 50 Top 10 country hits from the 1960s through the ’80s.

In the past few years, Lil Nas X sparked cultural debate and hit chart gold with “Old Town Road,” a country-rap mash-up that was followed by the arrival of Breland’s aesthetic blend “My Truck,” and songs from O.N.E the Duo, a mother-daughter group making a hybrid of country, R&B and pop. But there’s also a long history of Black artists embracing country after establishing careers in other genres. Here’s how some key figures fared.

Ray Charles

Ray Charles’s passion for country music dated back to childhood, when his mother would let him stay up late on Saturdays and listen to the Grand Ole Opry. As he told Terry Gross on “Fresh Air” in 1998 , “it was fascinating what these guys could do with these banjos and these fiddles and the steel guitars.”

When he tried his hand at the genre, with “Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music” in 1962, he mostly did away with those surface trappings, instead reimagining country favorites from the prior decade-plus as affecting, pop-crooner fare. Focusing on lovelorn ballads, including Eddy Arnold and Cindy Walker’s “You Don’t Know Me,” Don Gibson’s “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and Hank Williams’s “You Win Again,” Charles elegantly conveyed the wistful ache at the heart of these songs, his voice framed by sumptuous orchestral arrangements.

It was a brilliant concept that paid off in sales: The album topped the Billboard pop chart and its second volume, released later the same year, hit No. 2. In subsequent years, amid his steady work in pop, R&B and jazz, Charles would return to country music regularly, on albums such as “Love Country Style” (1970) and “Wish You Were Here Tonight” (1983), where he openly paid homage to his roots by incorporating the banjos, fiddles and steel guitars he’d first heard decades earlier.

Tina Turner

An entire album themed around country music wasn’t a huge stretch for Tina Turner . “The music I heard on the radio when I was a kid was mostly country and western,” she wrote in her memoir, “I, Tina,” and her superlative covers of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary,” the Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” and the Beatles’ “Get Back” showed her mastery of the rootsier side of rock ’n’ roll.

On “Tina Turns the Country On!,” her 1974 solo debut, she amplified the deep yearning of Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” added a righteous twang to a gender-flipped version of Bob Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me,” toughened up Hank Snow’s “I’m Movin’ On” and found the gospel undertone in Dolly Parton’s “There’ll Always Be Music.”

The album earned a Grammy nomination for best R&B vocal performance, female, but didn’t chart, and Turner found greater success with her next LP, “Acid Queen,” which leaned back toward rock. Though she never made another country album, outtakes from the “Tina Turns the Country On!” sessions came out later, including fiery renditions of Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson’s “Good Hearted Woman” (a song originally inspired by an ad Jennings had read for an Ike and Tina release), Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by Your Man” and Loretta Lynn’s “You Ain’t Woman Enough (to Take My Man).”

Linda Martell

Linda Martell had recorded a few early ’60s singles in a girl-group R&B vein when an aspiring music manager heard her singing country covers at a U.S. Air Force base in South Carolina. He convinced her to come to Nashville, where she quickly signed a record deal and tracked a debut LP, “Color Me Country” from 1970, that solidified her reboot as a country singer.

Three singles made Billboard’s country songs chart, with Martell’s beautifully understated cover of Richard Lewis Spencer’s recent hit “Color Him Father” peaking at No. 22. Martell became the first Black woman to perform at the Grand Ole Opry, but she faced racial discrimination on the road. A falling out with her producer — “He blackballed me” after she recorded for another label, Martell told Rolling Stone in 2020 — marked the end of her Nashville recording career. She continued to sing country and R&B in later years but never made another album. As a now-acknowledged pioneer in the genre, she’s inspired contemporary Black country artists including Mickey Guyton .

The Pointer Sisters

The Pointer Sisters’ early hits dipped into a grab bag of genres, including jazz, rock and funk, and on their proudly defiant 1974 breakup song “Fairytale,” full-on country, recorded in Nashville with fiddle, pedal steel and all the trappings. The song charted at No. 13 and won the quartet a Grammy for best country vocal performance by a duo or group, making them the first and, to date, only Black women who have taken home a Grammy in any country category.

“When I wrote ‘Fairytale,’ I wasn’t trying to do something clever to break into the country market,” Anita Pointer, who co-wrote the song with her sister Bonnie, said in the group’s autobiography, also called “Fairytale.” “I wrote it because that’s the way I felt.”

The Pointer Sisters broke another barrier with the song, becoming the first Black female group to perform at the Grand Ole Opry, where they faced protesters carrying signs that said “Keep Country, Country.” Their sound remained eclectic in later years, as they scored pop hits like “I’m So Excited.” But a follow-up to the country stylings of “Fairytale,” “Live Your Life Before You Die,” earned another Grammy nod, and on the 1994 genre-blending “Rhythm Country and Blues” compilation, the Pointers teamed with Clint Black to cover the Aretha Franklin hit “Chain of Fools.”

Millie Jackson

“I took these country songs that I like and funked them up a little,” the soul singer Millie Jackson said in 1981, ahead of the release of “Just a Lil’ Bit Country,” her first full LP focusing on the genre. Like Charles and Turner, the Georgia-born singer-songwriter grew up on country radio, and she recorded songs by Merle Haggard and others even as she established herself as a master of passionate, straight-talking R&B.

On “Just a Lil’ Bit Country,” she added a strutting contemporary groove to Charles’s “Modern Sounds in Country and Western” smash “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” tackled ballads made famous by Tammy Wynette and John Conlee, and reimagined Kris Kristofferson’s “If You Don’t Like Hank Williams” as an ode to her favorite soul singers (including herself) on “Anybody That Don’t Like Millie Jackson.”

Despite cracking the Top 50 on the R&B albums chart, the album turned out to be Jackson’s last full-LP foray into the genre, as she continued to explore soul, pop and even raunchy comedy. But in 2014, she showed she still had a knack for funking up country with her playfully explicit riff on Tyler Farr’s 2013 country hit “Redneck Crazy.”

Darius Rucker

In 2008, when the singer-songwriter Darius Rucker announced that Hootie & the Blowfish would be going on hiatus, he told fans not to expect another album or tour from the group “until I do three or four country records.” That number actually turned out to be five, as he found immediate success with “Learn to Live,” his second solo LP and first country album.

The album topped the Billboard country albums chart and yielded the first of a string of country No. 1 hits, culminating with “Wagon Wheel,” his Grammy-winning, diamond-certified Old Crow Medicine Show cover from 2013. Rucker would become the most prominent Black artist in the genre in decades: the first to top the Billboard country songs chart since Charley Pride in 1983, and the first to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry since Pride had in 1993.

Rucker did join back up with Hootie & the Blowfish in 2019, but his country career is still very much a going concern: His sixth album in the genre, “Carolyn’s Boy,” came out in 2023.

Lionel Richie

Traces of country were evident on Commodores hits like “Sail On” from 1979, where Lionel Richie sang with a pronounced twang. But the Alabama native found even greater success in the genre the following year, when “Lady,” a stirring love ballad he’d unsuccessfully pitched to his then-bandmates, became a huge hit for Kenny Rogers, topping Billboard’s Hot 100, country-songs and adult-contemporary charts, and also making a showing on the R&B songs chart.

Even as Richie’s solo career exploded in the ’80s thanks to pop hits like “Truly,” “All Night Long (All Night)” and “Hello,” he tipped his hat to Nashville on tracks like “Stuck on You” and “Deep River Woman,” a collaboration with the country veterans Alabama. He spotlighted his country past on “Tuskegee,” a 2012 LP where he revisited his major forays into the genre, along with his pop smashes, with help from Rogers, Willie Nelson, Shania Twain, Darius Rucker and other country A-listers.

In 2022, Richie made it clear that he hoped to make more time to record country music going forward. “I am so vested in country music, you have no idea,” he said at that year’s C.M.A. Awards .

Shubert Theatre announces its 2024-25 Broadway season featuring everyone from Tina to Temptations

T he Shubert Theatre in New Haven announced its 2024-2025 Broadway series this week, becoming the first of the Connecticut theaters that make Broadway tour bookings to announce its lineup.

There are five shows in the Shubert Broadway series: “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” about the pop/R&B legend, Oct. 24-27, 2024; “Dear Evan Hansen,” the Broadway hit about a high school deception, Nov. 22-24, 2024; “Clue,” a play based on the movie adaptation of the well-known board game, March 20-23, 2025; “Mean Girls,” the musical version of the Tina Fey movie, May 8-11, 2025; and another musical bio, “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life & Times of the Temptations” June 12-15, 2025.

Four of the five shows have already played Connecticut. “Tina” and “Ain’t Too Proud” were at The Bushnell during its 2022-23 season. “Mean Girls” played there in October of 2022 after being postponed from the COVID-affected 2020-21 season. “Dear Evan Hansen” was at The Bushnell in March 2022. “Mean Girls” also played at the Waterbury Palace this year.

Only “Clue” is new to Connecticut. The production originated at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey, where it premiered in January 2022. This version, with a script by Sandy Rustin (based on the screenplay by Jonathan Lynn), additional material by Clue Hunter Foster and Eric Price and original music by Michael Holland, is different from a musical version of the same board game that’s been around for 20 years.

As far as the Shubert is concerned, none of these shows have played that theater before. This is no small trick since it’s the Shubert’s 110th season and the venue has a long history of world-premiering new musicals (“Oklahoma” and “My Fair Lady” among them) and, in recent years, being the launching pad for national tours of recent Broadway hits. The Shubert often books national tours of revivals of musicals that have played the theater in previous years, such as the recent return of “Annie.”

In some cases, the upcoming Shubert shows have been refreshed by events since they began touring years ago. “Tina” has a book by Katori Hall, whose Pulitzer Prize-winning drama/comedy “The Hot Wing King” has just had its first Connecticut production at Hartford Stage. The movie version of the “Mean Girls” musical was released since the show played Hartford.

The Bushnell plans to announce its 2024-25 season on March 25, and the Waterbury Palace will announce sometime after that.

Shubert subscribers will receive renewal mailings from the theater or can call or visit the Shubert box office. For more information, including purchasing new subscriptions, go to shubert.com/ .

Sinéad O'Connor's daughter sang her song 'Nothing Compares 2 U' at a tribute concert for her mother. Meet the late singer's 4 kids.

  • Sinéad O'Connor died at age 56, her family told the Irish news outlet RTE in July 2023.
  • O'Connor had four children: Jake, Roisin, Shane, and Yeshua.
  • Here's everything that you need to know about O'Connor's kids.

Insider Today

The Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor died at age 56 in July 2023, according to a statement from O'Connor's family given to the Irish news outlet RTE.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad," the family's statement read. "Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

O'Connor is known for her 1990 cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," which appeared on her second LP, "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got." She was nominated for eight Grammy awards in her career and won the award for best alternative music performance for "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" at the 1991 awards show.

O'Connor also famously tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II to protest against abuse in the Catholic Church during a performance on "Saturday Night Live" in 1992, an act for which she received backlash.

O'Connor is survived by her three living children after her   son Shane died by suicide at age 17 in 2022. Here's everything you need to know about her kids.

Jake Reynolds is O'Connor's eldest child

O'Connor gave birth to her first son, Jake Reynolds, in June 1987, when she was married to John Reynolds. At the time, Today reported , O'Connor was 20 years old, and she gave birth three weeks before her debut album's release.

In an interview with People in 2021, O'Connor said Jake worked as a chef. She posted in July 2015 that he had welcomed a son, making her a grandmother, the International Business Times reported .

Jake has largely remained out of the public eye, though O'Connor occasionally posted about him on social media.

Roisin Waters is O'Connor's second child

O'Connor gave birth to Roisin, her only daughter, in 1995 with the journalist John Waters, after her marriage to John Reynolds ended. O'Connor and Waters eventually engaged in a custody battle over Roisin, which Waters won in 1999, MTV News reported . The outlet said O'Connor decided to give Waters custody of their daughter following O'Connor's suicide attempt.

Related stories

O'Connor told People in 2021 that her daughter had a "great singing voice" but that she was relieved Roisin didn't choose to follow in her mother's footsteps. "I thought they would treat her like they treat me," she said. People reported that Roisin worked as a pastry chef.

Roisin put her singing talents to use, however, at a tribute concert for her mother and the late Irish artist Shane MacGowan at Carnegie Hall in March 2024, Billboard reported. She sang "Nothing Compares 2 U," her mother's most famous track. Fellow artist Amanda Palmer posted a video of Roisin's performance on social media, writing, "I don't think there was a dry eye in the house."

Shane Lunny was O'Connor's third child, and he died by suicide in 2022

O'Connor gave birth to Shane Lunny in 2004, having him with Donal Lunny, an Irish folk musician. In the 2021 People interview, O'Connor said that Shane was "a real mommy's boy" who wanted to follow in his mother's footsteps with a career in music.

In August 2017, O'Connor posted a video on Facebook saying that she had felt alone since losing custody of Shane and expressed suicidal ideation, The Telegraph reported .

Shane was found dead in January 2022  and O'Connor wrote on Twitter that he had died by suicide.

"My beautiful son, Nevi'im Nesta Ali Shane O'Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God," O'Connor tweeted in a since-removed post.

"May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace," she said.

O'Connor posted a tribute to her son days before her death, People reported .

"Been living as an undead night creature since," she wrote in a now-deleted tweet, according to People. "He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally."

O'Connor's youngest child is Yeshua Bonadio

O'Connor had her youngest child, Yeshua, with Frank Bonadio in 2006. O'Connor told People in 2021 that Bonadio was an American scientist, and that Yeshua was interested in attending college in the United States.

O'Connor said that Yeshua was an "incredible musician" who played the piano and had an "incredible singing voice."

The Bushnell Performing Arts Center in Hartford announced its 2024-25 Broadway series of musicals on Monday.

The slate of shows for the upcoming season includes the Neil Diamond bio-musical “A Beautiful Noise” Oct. 1-6, 2024; the return of Disney’s “The Lion King” Nov. 13-Dec. 1, 2024; “MJ the Musical” Dec. 10-15, 2024; a radically rethought revival of “Peter Pan” Feb. 4-9, 2025; “The Wiz” March 11-16, 2025; “Some Like It Hot” April 29-May 4, 2025; and “Back to the Future the Musical” June 4-8, 2025.

The schedule breaks down to two jukebox musicals, two refreshed and reinterpreted 20th-century musical classics and three musical versions of famous movies (one of them from Disney).

The Bushnell continues its tradition of hosting the first national tours of recent Broadway hits. Two of the shows, “MJ” and “Back to the Future,” are still running on Broadway as their first national tours commence. The Broadway production of “Some Like It Hot” closed in December after running for around a year. “The Wiz,” a revival of the 1974 Black version of “The Wizard of Oz,” is touring before it gets to Broadway, playing The Bushnell less than three weeks before it begins preview performances at New York’s Marquis Theatre.

Besides the seven shows in the subscription season, The Bushnell announced return bookings of two musicals that have already played the venue in recent years: “Les Miserables” from Oct. 29 to Nov. 3, 2024, and the concert-style British history lesson “Six” Dec. 31, 2024 through Jan. 5, 2025. Various tours of “Les Mis” have been coming to The Bushnell since 1989, most recently in 2017. When “Six” happens, it will be only two years since the first tour of the show about the six wives of Henry VIII played The Bushnell in January 2023.

Tickets are not yet available. Bushnell Broadway series subscribers are contacted first about renewing their subscriptions. Then, new subscriptions are offered to those not currently subscribing. Finally, months from now, single tickets will go on sale for the shows.

Of the seven subscription shows, five are the first national tours of new musicals that have never appeared at The Bushnell. The other two, “Peter Pan” and “The Wiz,” first came to The Bushnell decades ago but in very different forms. This new production of “Peter Pan” has been rewritten by playwright Larissa Fasthorse (Broadway’s “The Thanksgiving Play”), with a particular interest in reworking the original script’s objectionable depictions of Native Americans.

“Some Like It Hot” is based on the 1959 film comedy directed by Billy Wilder and starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe. It’s not the first time the movie has been turned into a musical. A previous attempt, “Sugar,” by Jule Styne, Bob Merrill and Peter Stone ran on Broadway in 1972 and (retitled as “Some Like It Hot”) played the Shubert Theatre in New Haven in 2002. This new one has a score by the “Hairspray” and TV “Smash” team of Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman and a book by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin. López has had several of his plays (including the world premieres of “Somewhere” and “Reverberation”) produced by Hartford Stage, which also commissioned (but did not end up producing) his Tony-winning epic “The Inheritance.”

Ruffin, best known as a writer/performer on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and for her now-defunct “Amber Ruffin Show” on Peacock, also had a hand in the tour of “The Wiz,” adding new material to the show’s book.

It took years, but The Bushnell has finally caught up with the backlog of Broadway series shows whose visits to Hartford were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The last straggler was “The Cher Show,” which was originally scheduled to play The Bushnell in November of 2020 and finally arrived earlier this month. This will likely be the first season since 2021 which has not had to make room for delayed runs of musicals originally planned for previous seasons.

The 2024-25 season begins in the fall. There are still three more Broadway shows coming in the current 2023-24 season: the “Wizard of Oz” prequel “Wicked” April 24 through May 12, “Beetlejuice” May 28 through June 2 and “Funny Girl” June 18-23.

The Shubert in New Haven announced its own 2024-25 Broadway series slate last week with “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Clue,” “Mean Girls” and “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life & Times of the Temptations.” All but one of those shows, the non-musical play “Clue,” has already played The Bushnell on earlier tours. Other Connecticut theaters that host Broadway tours, such as the Waterbury Palace, will announce their 2024-25 seasons soon.

For more information on The Bushnell’s upcoming 2024-25 season, go to the venue’s website at bushnell.org .
