Lorde announces Solar Power Tour of New Zealand, Australia in 2022

Lorde will tour her new album Solar Power in New Zealand and Australia next year, it has been announced.

The Grammy winner will play five shows across outdoor venues in Aotearoa in early 2022, and will then head across the ditch for four more gigs. Before her headline tour kicks off, Lorde will also perform as part of Christchurch festival Electric Avenue's line up on February 26.

More from Newshub

Lorde's return to the stage has been five years in the making, following a long hiatus from touring and making music.

Her single 'Solar Power' dropped earlier this month, giving fans a taste of her forthcoming album of the same name - the release date of which remains a mystery.

The tour will begin on February 27 in Upper Moutere, near Nelson, before heading to Lower Hutt, Havelock, New Plymouth and Auckland.

Lorde will then perform in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, with her Kiwi and Aussie shows making up a global tour that will see her make stops across Europe, The UK and North America.

The 24-year-old's choice of outdoor venues across New Zealand is fitting, considering her third studio album is, in her own words, "a celebration of the natural world".

"[It's] an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors," she wrote in a newsletter to her fans.

"In times of heartache, grief, deep love or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I've learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through."

Tickets for the all-ages shows go on sale to the general public on Monday July 5. Ticket buyers will also be able to pre-order Solar Power at an exclusive special price.

Lorde Solar Power NZ Tour dates:

  • Sunday, February 27 - Neudorf Vineyards, Upper Moutere
  • Tuesday, March 1 - Days Bay, Lower Hutt NZ
  • Wednesday, March 2 - Black Barn Vineyards, Havelock
  • Friday, March 4 - TSB Bowl Of Brooklands, New Plymouth

Lorde Announces Tour, Reveals Release Date and Tracklist for New Album Solar Power

By Evan Minsker and Allison Hussey

Lorde

Lorde made her big return earlier this month with the release of “ Solar Power ” and the promise that a new album of the same name would arrive later this year. Today, she’s officially announced the follow-up to 2017’s Melodrama : Solar Power is out August 20. Find the tracklist and already-iconic album cover below.

Along with the detailing of her album, Lorde has announced a 2022 tour. She’ll start things off in her native New Zealand in February before heading to the United States and Canada for spring concerts. Lorde’ll then go to Europe and the United Kingdom for more shows. Find her schedule below.

“Solar Power” arrived with a new music video co-directed by Lorde and previous collaborator Joel Kefali. The song was co-written and co-produced with Jack Antonoff. Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo provided backing vocals on the song. “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors,” Lorde wrote in a newsletter upon the single’s release.

According to a press release, as an alternative to being released on CD, Solar Power will be available as “an eco-conscious Music Box,” which has visual content, handwritten notes, photos, and a download card. “I decided early on in the process of making this album that I also wanted to create an environmentally kind, forward-thinking alternative to the CD,” Lorde said in a statement. “I wanted this Music Box product to be similar in size, shape and price to a CD, to live alongside it in a retail environment, but be something which stands apart and that’s committed to the evolving nature of a modern album.”

In November 2019, Lorde wrote in a newsletter update to fans that she had paused work on a new album as she struggled with grief after the death of her dog Pearl. But in May 2020, she issued another update where she said she’d started working on a new album in December.

Last year, Lorde announced Going South , a photo book of images shot by her friend Harriet Were during their trip through Antarctica in 2019. This spring, the singer-songwriter made an appearance alongside Marlon Williams during a performance in Auckland to cover Bruce Springsteen’s “Tougher Than the Rest.”

Find out where Melodrama landed on Pitchfork’s “ The 200 Best Albums of the 2010s .”

Lorde's auckland concert: 'i won't be forgetting the solar power tour any time soon'.

Lorde Shot by Ophelia Mikkelson Jones

Lorde Shot by Ophelia Mikkelson Jones Photo: Shot by Ophelia Mikkelson Jones

Lorde's long-awaited Solar Power World Tour touched down in Tāmaki Makaurau after what felt like an endless string of rescheduling announcements. Originally announced in 2021 off the back of the singers latest album, 'Solar Power,' the tour itself has lit up almost every corner of the globe.

Fans, some of whom had been lining up since 3am that day, were met with a peerless opening lineup consisting of RIIKI REID, Fazerdaze, and Marlon Williams before Lorde took to the stage. Warming up the crowd seemed to not be a challenge - all three acts brought their own energy to the stage.

"This is the show I think the most about on the whole tour - the whole world tour - this is the one," an earnest Lorde, sitting atop a large sundial in the middle of the stage, said.

"There's something about playing in a field down the road from your house that is very surreal."

There's nothing more special than a Lorde concert in Tāmaki Makaurau. Much like a rugby game on home soil, a hometown show for any artist brings along an energy - from both the artist and the crowd - that you can't replicate anywhere else in the world. Furthermore, fans had flown in from as close as Napier and as far as the US to get a taste of what I would describe as one of the most intense Lorde concerts I've ever been to.

As a body of work; an entity of sorts at this point, Solar Power exists by way of places such as Grey Lynn Park, Herne Bay Beach, Minnehaha, Cheltenham Beach, and even Western Springs Stadium. It's no less of an aural recollection of memories for the singer - a sonic representation of her greatest, happiest moments - all of which resonate within the bounds of a classic Auckland summer.

"I know you have some pent up summer frustrations that you could let out tonight," the singer says, grinning, acknowledging that Auckland hasn't exactly had the kind of summer Solar Power was written about.

Marlon Williams joined Lorde, better known to her friends and family as Ella Yelich-O'Connor, for the te reo Māori rendition of 'Stoned At The Nail Salon', translated by Hana Mereraiha for the singer's 2021 release Te Ao Mārama.

I've never in my life seen a crowd more still in such a respectful way. Bar the racist comments I heard around me, all of which were shushed by punters, there was something extremely special about this performance. I still can't put my finger on it - my jaw was on the floor for the whole four-and-a-half minutes the two were on stage. I even shed a tear.

The show consists of a setlist of quite an eclectic nature, from Melodrama deep-cuts to even deeper Pure Heroine cuts, the fans who have been at Lorde's side for the better part of 10 years lived out their adolescence through a selection of songs that soundtracked their growth alongside the singer.

'Ribs' is nothing short of a cult classic Lorde song. If you were a Lorde fan around the time Pure Heroine was released, you would know how much that song blew up. Exploding all over Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, and gaining a permanent spot on every setlist she's ever performed, it's no surprise that the crowd knew every word - every syllable - to the song. The echo of "You're the only friend I need / Sharing beds like little kids / And laughing 'til our ribs get tough / But that will never be enough" could have been heard all the way out at Waiheke Island. It was that loud.

The volume of the crowd didn't die down for a second. Songs such as 'Liability', 'Sober', 'Supercut', 'Green Light', and recent billion-stream-club member, 'Royals', left the crowd gasping for air, and leaving Lorde with her jaw on the floor. Towards the end of the concert, she exclaimed "You sound so f***ing cool," and from then, it only got louder.

Everything on the Solar Power tour feels extremely deliberate, probably because it is. When talking to Charlotte Ryan prior to the show, the singer explained that not only did she draw the set design out on paper before it was made, but the show itself was choreographed by Annie-B Parson who is most famous for creating American Utopia.

Going into the show with that knowledge, it's so telling that every movement is extremely calculated, so much so as to tell a story throughout a 23-song long setlist. From the turning of the sundial to the utilization of the stairs, Ella touches every corner of the stage with grace, fluidity and a poise that can't be matched.

After many an outfit change, it's safe to say that the crowd of 8000 people gathered in the Outer Fields had let up all, if not an excess of their summer frustrations. Among them was me, who, gasping for air, had just experienced what I would now believe to be one of many 'core memory moments'.

I won't be forgetting the Solar Power tour any time soon.

The countdown is on ahead of Lorde’s Solar Power World Tour and , just announced, Lorde will now be joined by Marlon Williams and The Yarra Benders in Auckland as well as already announced support acts Fazerdaze and RIIKI REID .

Lorde starts the New Zealand Solar Power World Tour with two nights in Lower Hutt and then heading on to Upper Moutere and then Havelock North for two nights at Black Barn Vineyard. The final show takes place in Auckland at The Outer Fields at Western Springs.

The Solar Power World Tour has been lauded by critics and fans across the globe:

Marlon Williams has just come off his much celebrated sold out My Boy tour of Aotearoa. Taking in some of the country’s most beautiful theatres, Marlon mesmerised fans throughout the country whilst introducing them to new songs from his latest album My Boy .

This summer, join Lorde and special guests Marlon Williams (Auckland only), Fazerdaze and RIIKI REID for a string of sensational shows. Known for her captivating on-stage presence and enthralling vocals, Lorde doesn’t just put on a show, she delivers a sensory experience. The Solar Power World Tour will be the highlight of the year!

ABOUT LORDE In 2013, a 16-year-old LORDE quietly, yet confidently asserted herself as the voice of a generation with her full-length debut, Pure Heroine . The album would go triple-platinum, win two GRAMMY®Awards, and spawn the certified Diamond, record-breaking, international juggernaut single, “Royals,” and quadruple-platinum follow up “Team.” The former cemented LORDE as “the youngest solo artist and the only New Zealander to achieve #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1987.” Time exalted her amongst the “Most Influential Teenagers in the World,” she landed on Forbes ’s “30 Under 30” List, graced the cover of Rolling Stone and performed alongside Nirvana during the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. She also curated the official soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and recorded “Yellow Flicker Beat” as the lead single. In 2017 LORDE released her second full-length studio album, Melodrama which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 Chart, making her the first ever NZ artist to land a #1 debut album in the United States. The album reached #1 in over 45 countries and earned LORDE a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2018 GRAMMY®Awards. In 2021, LORDE made her highly anticipated return with critically acclaimed single, “Solar Power,” from her third full-length studio album, Solar Power . Solar Power was released August 20thanddebuted at #1 in Australia and NZ and Top 5 around the world including US, UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal. On release of Solar Power, Lorde released an innovative eco-conscious discless Music box product as an alternative to a CD. LORDE currently has over 14 million albums sold worldwide and over 14 billion streams worldwide.

The Solar Power Tour

  • View history

The Solar Power Tour is the upcoming third tour by New Zealander singer-songwriter Lorde , in support of her third studio album Solar Power (2021). Set to begin in April 2022, the tour will play over 50 concerts in Australasia, North America, and Europe.

Background [ ]

The Primavera Sound setlist for their 2022 festival was revealed on 25 May 2021, which included Lorde as a headliner. The dates for the Solar Power Tour were announced alongside the tracklist and release date of Solar Power on 21 June 2021. Lorde offered presale tickets for her fans subscribed to her mailing list, with presale tickets available from 24 June 2021 in North America and Europe, and 30 June 2021 in Australia and New Zealand. The general sale opened in North America and Europe on 25 June 2021, and in Australia and New Zealand on 5 July 2021. Taranaki Daily News reported that prices for her concert in New Plymouthstarted from NZ$89.90 plus fees.

On 25 June 2021, after her two London shows sold out instantly, Lorde added two new dates in London, with a third show in the Roundhouse Theatre scheduled for 3 June 2022, and another performance to close out the tour on 28 June 2022 at Alexandra Palace. A second show was added in Šibenik on the same day, with Croatia Week reporting that tickets for her first show sold out in 3 seconds. Additional shows were also added in Toronto, Boston, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. On 1 July 2021, two additional shows were added in Australia, after "overwhelming demand", with one show each added in Melbourne and Sydney.

It was announced on 10 November 2021 that the Australasian leg of the Solar Power Tour would be postponed to 2023. Lorde said of the decision that "touring internationally through a Covid outbreak has a ton of unforeseen moving parts, and I'd much rather play for you when we're all confident it will go smoothly", and promoters Frontier Touring said that the tour was initially scheduled with the expectation that there would be no restrictions on quarantine and that the borders of Australia and New Zealand would be open to non-citizens. New shows in Lower Hutt, Brisbane, and Perth were also announced.

Lorde Announces ‘Solar Power’ New Album, World Tour

Lorde’s new album comes in an “environmentally kind, forward-thinking alternative to the CD” format

After some time out of the spotlight, singer-songwriter Lorde is back with a new album. Lorde’s upcoming studio record, “Solar Power,” will hit stores Aug. 20, and she’ll embark on a world tour in 2022 to support the new tunes.

Lorde’s 2022 North American tour still set off April 3 in Nashville, Tennessee, and run through a May 7 date in Santa Barbara, California. Tickets for the newly announced run will go on sale to the general public starting this Friday (June 25) at 10 a.m. local venue time. For ticket information, head to Lorde’s official website .

What’s extra unique about this release is that “Solar Power” will arrive in a new “discless” music format that serves as a replacement for a CD. The format, called “Music Box,” includes bonus visual content, handwritten notes, photos and a download card.

Lorde calls “Solar Power” a “celebration of the natural world,” plus “an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors.”

She adds, “In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learned to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”

Lorde on bringing her Solar Power tour home, her texts to Jacinda and where she’s been hiding

The first thing Ella Yelich O’Connor does when she gets back home to New Zealand is head to a supermarket.

“I’m going to the supermarket quite quickly, yeah. I do really like to get the groceries. It makes you feel quite calm, you know, like ‘I’ve got olive oil again’,” laughs the artist known as Lorde.

The Grammy-winning artist, 26, has been hiding out in her hometown of Auckland since November, and is finally set to start the New Zealand leg of her long-awaited Solar Power tour next month.

But first, she’s making the most of summer in Tāmaki Makaurau - despite the weather.

“I mean, it has rained the entire summer, but I still feel like I’ve had such a nice break after quite a big year of shows and travel,” she tells the Herald.

So, what’s on her summer bucket list? Op shopping, lunchtime swims, fishing and food.

“I really like how a swim is just part of your day in summer ... it’s definitely not something you can do in New York. I obviously love seeing my family. I love to get up for a fish. That always feels like summer has begun, once I’ve done that. And then just eating all the yum s*** that I haven’t eaten for six months!”

You might spot her at Ockhee on Ponsonby Rd.

“I just love that restaurant so much. I think Paul [Lee] did something so clever with that. And I crave it, I like to think about those dishes. I also love Yuzu. Shout out to Jane.”

And it’s good to be home after living her life in the public eye - something she has dealt with for the past 10 years. It’s also something she has in common with former New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern, who cited the pressures and responsibilities of a public-facing role in her resignation speech earlier this month.

Does she have a message for the former PM? “I texted it to her,” she says.

“I can’t even imagine the amount of pressure she has faced. When your firm or your workplace is under scrutiny, that is shared.

“It’s not aimed at your face, your name, you know. It’s just a different feeling when it’s more targeted,” she says.

But for Lorde, that pressure isn’t necessarily always a bad thing.

“I think it’s good for public figures to be held accountable and to feel that there is that pressure.

“I’ll always feel it, but I’m used to it at this point as well. It’s something that I live with comfortably.”

Her younger sister Indy has just set out to carve her own path in the music industry.

“It’s cool seeing how the upbringing that we had, which prioritised being creative and artistic and being into language, it’s cool seeing that have an effect on her as well,” Yelich O’Connor muses.

“And she’s very much always the performer in our family. She’s super charismatic. So yeah, it feels right for her to be doing that.

“I try to always be there for her when it comes to stuff relating to the business side of it, or the stuff to do with people, because I’ve got experience with that sort of thing.”

She’s had the time to perfect the art of keeping that boundary between her public and private life, something that’s more important to her than ever.

“That’s always been a big thing for me, and particularly now,” she says.

“Like, I don’t post a tonne on social media, I send out my newsletter.

“I am super private and it’s just sort of always been the way that I’ve done it, which does work so well for me and gives me that quality of life. There are places where I can be private, which is awesome.”

After 10 years, she still finds it “more nerve-wracking” playing on her home turf - so she “begged” fellow Kiwi Marlon Williams to open her upcoming show in Auckland on March 4.

“There’s something about everyone I know being there and seeing me in this different way than what they know me as,” she admits.

“So I literally said to him, ‘this will make me feel so much more comfortable if you at all wanted to do this for me’. And I’m very lucky that he said yes. Because he could probably sell more tickets than I could, to be honest. He’s just so in demand.”

Williams came along on her tour of Europe and the UK last year.

“It was delightful having him be backstage to do our warm-ups with us and seeing my whole band grow to love him in the way that we love him,” she gushes.

“And just get to like, have a cuddle from that gorgeous, tall man, you know!”

And it’s her love of the outdoors that inspired her choice of venues for the Solar Power shows, which include stops at Christchurch’s Electric Avenue festival, vineyards in Hawke’s Bay and Upper Moutere, Wellington’s Days Bay and the Outerfields at Auckland’s Western Springs.

“This album is very much set in natural light, golden hour,” she says.

“And I really think it makes a difference to the show, to the feeling of the show, seeing it in that kind of environment. The stage set is a take on a sundial, and it’s made of natural materials. So it just looks right outside. My preference is to just play outdoor shows.”

She acknowledges that fans have been “so patient” in waiting to see her perform live again after what’s been a tough few years for the music industry.

“Our industry has had a really, really, really tough time,” she says.

“There are so many parts to it. And there’s a real shortage of people who are qualified to do what needs to be done. There’s the financial side of it. So I hope that this stuff will start to even out, but it’s very tough and I think talking about it is good because as a concert-goer, I would have no idea what was going into making the shows that I was going to happen.

“So I think just for people to be aware of that is a good thing.”
