Sit back and soak up the scenery as the landscape transforms and the train moves into a new country. Upon arrival and after checking into the hotel in Berlin, venture out for a guided tour. With such a rich history there is so much to experience. See top sights including the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie to name a few! Dinner tonight is at a traditional German beer hall. Prost!

Meals: Breakfast Dinner

Berlin’s turbulent history has certainly shaped it into what it is today. This city has a fascinating history, a buzzing modern atmosphere and so much more to offer travellers! With a vibrant art scene and modern landmarks, you will be spoiled for choice with how to spend your free day. Why not join the Berlin+ optional excursion for a full day of exploration and a unique insight into Germany’s capital city? This tour includes visits to the East Side Gallery, the German Democratic Republic at the Museum in the Kulturbrauerei and the Hackescher Markt. End off the day with a trip to the top of the Berlin TV Tower for magnificent views of the city!

Meals: Breakfast

It's time to rock the rails again as our European train journey continues. Today’s itinerary is jam-packed and kicks off with a morning visit to Dresden. Embark on an orientation tour of Dresden and see the Dresden Castle and the Frauenkirche with its grand dome before exploring the city on your own. Later, continue on to Prague, the Czech Republic’s beautiful capital city which is renowned the world over for its awe-inspiring Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Tonight, share a traditional Czech dinner with the group and look forward to tasting delicious and hearty local cuisine. Be sure to give that famous Czech beer a try!

The cobblestoned streets of Prague will be our playground today! Begin the day with a guided tour of the “City of a Hundred Spires”. See the well-preserved castles and cathedrals and fall in love with the dreamy bridges across the Vltava River. Your guide will explain more about the history of the city and showcase sights around the Old Town and Jewish Quarter. This afternoon, enjoy free time to explore on your own or join the Prague + optional excursion! This exciting excursion includes a tour of Prague Castle District, a cruise on the Vltava River and more! Tonight, choose to enjoy some traditional Czech music and dancing along with a four-course dinner.

The train journey continues onward to the capital of Austria today. Intellectuals and artists like Mozart, Beethoven and Freud helped shape the legacy of what is known as Europe’s cultural capital. Arrive and embark on a guided tour of Vienna which will showcase the beauty of this enchanting city. Be charmed by the beautiful architecture of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Vienna State Opera and much more. Tonight’s dinner setting is a triple-level wine cellar dating back to the Romanesque and Gothic periods!

Continue your exploration in Vienna as today is free to spend however you wish! Today’s highly recommended optional excursion is an in-depth visit to Schonbrunn Palace. The palace offers a look into the history, interests and taste of the Hapsburg rulers as this was their main summer residence. The extravagant interior of the palace is really something to behold, and the gardens are an enchanting continuation of the lavish palace. End off this excursion with coffee and cake at a stunning Viennese café! Tonight, why not soak up the musical culture that Vienna is known for with a classical music concert?

By now you will have ticked off some of the major travel bucket-list items in Vienna. So, today it is time to do as the locals do! Grab a coffee and a slice of Sachertorte or apple strudel. Visit one of the main squares and immerse yourself in the local culture and music. For an extraordinary culinary experience, the Vienna Naschmarkt offers fruit, vegetables, delicacies and many restaurant options; this spot is very popular with locals. Alternatively, add another country to the list and join the day trip to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia! This charming capital is known as Vienna’s twin city and features incredible architecture.

Say A uf Wiedersehen to Vienna and hello to Hungary as the group boards the train to Budapest, Hungary’s enchanting capital city. Arrive and embark on a guided walking tour of Budapest’s Castle district. Learn more about how this city evolved on the banks of the Danube River. Afterwards, enjoy free time to experience the sights and sounds on your own. Tonight, get a taste of local Hungarian cuisine as the group will enjoy an included dinner at a local restaurant.

Budapest is said to be one of the most photogenic cities in Europe. Architectural wonders like the Parliament Building and a collection of stunning basilicas make for a very dramatic skyline that simply begs to be adored (and photographed of course!). Why not visit one of the city’s thermal baths on your free day? Budapest is known as the “City of Spas” as over 100 natural thermal springs bubble up beneath the city’s foundations. The Széchenyi Baths in City Park are perhaps the most well-known. Why not end the day with a memorable dinner cruise along the Danube river? The lights of Budapest by night are truly a sight to behold!

Today we'll depart Prague for Vienna, "the City of Waltz." Our drive takes us through rich farmlands to the rolling hills of Moravia (the Easternmost province of the Czech Republic). We'll see the charming buildings and beautiful surroundings of Telč, before we continue across the Austrian border to the quaint town of Dürnstein. Later in the day, we’ll reach Vienna, one of Europe’s most elegant and grand cities. Day 5: Vienna

amsterdam prague budapest tours

Our day starts with a visit to St. Stephen's Cathedral, located at the heart of the city. One of Austria's most beloved landmarks, this limestone cathedral features colorful roof tiles that form the Royal and Imperial double-headed eagle and the coat of arms of the city of Vienna. Just a short walk away is the Hofburg Palace, a 13th century palace that characterizes the opulence of the Habsburg dynasty. Next, we'll view the baroque Belvedere Palace, Prater Amusement Park, and the UN Buildings. The rest of the day is at leisure. We can explore Vienna independently, or consider an optional excursion to the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald).

Day 6: Vienna

amsterdam prague budapest tours

Today brings us to the Imperial Palace of Schönbrunn—with its 18th-century architecture, interiors, and vast gardens; it’s among the most impressive baroque structures in Europe. After the visit to the Palace, we'll have more free time to explore Vienna. We'll punctuate the day with dinner together in the Grinzing suburb, in one of the typical Viennese wine taverns called the “Heuriger”.

Day 7: Vienna – Bratislava – Budapest

amsterdam prague budapest tours

This morning, we'll visit the nearby Café Residenz where we'll will experience a strudel-making demonstration and tasting. After we've enjoyed our delicious strudel, we say goodbye to Vienna and depart to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. For centuries, this city has been famous for its charm and beauty. The beautifully restored old town with its winding lanes and medieval courtyards is nestled between the steep Castle Hill and the Danube River. On a guided walking tour explore historic, lively pedestrian streets of this charming city where local street vendors offer regional gifts. Later, we'll continue on to Budapest where we'll begin our visit with a short orientation tour by bus. After check in, the evening is free for us to enjoy dinner on our own.

Day 8: Budapest

amsterdam prague budapest tours

This morning, our local guide will introduce us to Budapest’s fascinating history and sights. Enjoy a breathtaking, panoramic view from the lookout terraces of the Fisherman’s Bastion, located on Castle Hill. We’ll also see the Citadel on Gellért Hill and Matthias Church, which was used for centuries for the coronations of Hungarian kings. This afternoon, we'll set sail on a leisurely one-hour cruise on the romantic Danube River to take in city views from the water. Afterward, we'll visit the famous Szechenyi Thermal Spa, one of the biggest natural hot spring spa baths in Europe. Here, we'll enjoy a relaxing medicinal soak in a historical setting.

Day 9: Budapest

amsterdam prague budapest tours

Today we'll embark on a morning excursion to the scenic Hungarian countryside. We’ll journey to the artist’s town of Szentendre, a gem at the gateway to the picturesque Danube Bend River region where we'll have free time to explore its cobblestoned streets and Baroque charms. Then, we'll return to Budapest, where we can revel in its fine arts and architecture at our own pace. Tonight, we'll celebrate our great trip together at a festive farewell dinner at a typical “Csarda” restaurant, including dinner, a glass of wine, and entertainment.

In Europe and in most of North America and New Zealand, group sizes can range between 24 – 53 awesome travellers.

In regions like Asia, Australia, Africa and Latin America, and on some North America and New Zealand trips, our group sizes are considerably smaller – as low as 12 or up to 30 travellers max.

We always try to accommodate special requests such as birthdays, proposals etc. Please chat to our team and we can explore how we may support the request.

What’s not included?

Contiki social travel trips have a large degree of flexibility built into them to enable you to truly own your experience. This means that some trip elements are not included in the initial cost and may require additional budgeting.

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important.

Travel insurance and visas are also not included in the cost of your trip, and should be booked separately.

Perhaps the first thing you think of when you think of Hungary is its delicious cuisine; after all, it is the country that gave us goulash and fisherman`s soup. It is also known the world over for its 1,000-year historical tradition which bred strong folk traditions. Hungary is also known for its spring and summer festivals, its thermal spas, stunning and varied architectural styles befitting `the crossroads of Europe`, and some of the most gorgeous scenery you will find on the continent. Be sure to visit the charming capital of Budapest, split by the Danube, and then travel further afield to Transdanubia and the Great Hungarian Plain.

amsterdam prague budapest tours

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is perhaps best-known for its beautiful capital, Prague, although it is known for much more, such as its numerous castles and châteaux (over 1,200 of them!). It is also well-known for having some of the most delicious food and drink in Europe, in particular its wines and famed Pilsner-style beer. The Czech Republic has and had a very long Jewish tradition, which is triumphantly on display after the horrors and loss of World War II in such places as the Great Synagogue in Plzen, the third-largest in the world. Finally, the Czech Republic is well-known for its museums, educating visitors on everything from history and art to folk arts and crafts and even life in the former Communist Czechoslovakia.

Netherlands

The Netherlands (or Holland) may be a small country, but it`s filled with world-famous icons. This country is famous for its bulb fields, windmills, cheese markets, wooden shoes, canals of Amsterdam, masterpieces of Old Masters, Delft Blue earthenware, innovative water management, and millions of bicycles. As you explore the Netherlands you`ll find photogenic spots at every nook and cranny, a hipster coffee scene, an up and coming food scene, and loads of wonderful museums. While its most well-known city is Amsterdam, there are plenty of other beautiful cities that you will want to explore as well.

Trip Summary

amsterdam prague budapest tours

Easygoing, liberal Amsterdam is "different." Its citizens, bubbling along happily in their multiracial melting pot, are not so easily poured into the restrictive molds of trade and industry. More important, you can enjoy Amsterdam, its culture, history, and beauty, without stretching the limits of your credit cards. Few skyscrapers mar the clarity of the sky and the populace mostly walks or bikes from place to place. The historic center recalls Amsterdam's Golden Age as the command post of a vast trading network and colonial empire, when wealthy merchants constructed gabled residences along neatly laid-out canals. Visit Dam Square, Anne Frank House, Bloemenmarkt, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Canal Belt, Jordaan, Red Light District and so much more!

Rows of steeples stacked on onion domes pierce the sky, earning Prague the name 'The City of a Thousand Spires'. Prague has stood the test of time: 1,000 years of art and architecture have collided with power politics and religious conflicts. New shops and restaurants have opened, expanding the city's culinary reach far beyond tradition. The arts and theater are thriving in the 'new' Prague. The arts of the new era possess a distinctive Czech flavor. All of this frenetic activity plays well against a stunning backdrop of towering churches and centuries-old bridges and alleyways. Explore Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock, Wenceslas Square, the Jewish Quarter and so much more!

Two cities in one! Buda on a hill, historical part of the city and Pest on a plain its shops and boulevards both separated by the Danube flowing between them and connected by magnificent bridges. Budapest looks its most beautiful at dawn, yet it is also spectacularly appealing at night. With a unique, youthful atmosphere, a world-class classical music scene as well as a pulsating night life and an exceptionally rich offering of natural thermal baths, Budapest is one of Europe`s most delightful and enjoyable cities. This is a vibrant city: it throbs with life morning, noon and night; a remarkable and wholly unpretentious place. Visit and explore the Buda Hill and the Castle District, Parliament, the Chain Bridge, Heroes' Square, St. Stephen's Basilica, the Opera House, Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion, Gellert Hill, the thermal baths and so much more.
