Best Safaris Near Mt Kilimanjaro

Anthony is a renowned Africa expert and author of the Lonely Planet guidebook to Tanzania.

The area near Mt Kilimanjaro, on the Tanzanian side of the border, is one of East Africa’s most alluring safari destinations. There’s so much to do here, from exploring the better-known northern safari parks of Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, to lesser-known attractions such as West Kilimanjaro, Mkomazi and Lake Natron/Ol Doinyo Lengai where you can enjoy a quieter, more intimate safari experience.

Wherever you go, there’s often plenty of great wildlife to see. But there’s grandeur here, too, and your most memorable sightings may well involve standing in awe before some of Africa’s most magnificent mountains. Many tours in Tanzania’s north depart from Arusha, so consider booking somewhere to stay in town the night before your tour begins (if such accommodation is not already included in your tour).

4305 Safaris Near Mt Kilimanjaro

1. Ngorongoro Crater

Zebra's walking at Ngorongoro Crater

It’s a long drive from Moshi to Ngorongoro Crater, but we’ve never heard anyone complain. Ngorongoro is truly one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders, a lost world of wildlife – lions, elephants, black rhino, spotted hyenas, flamingos and so much more – and a setting that surpasses anything you’ll see elsewhere. The excitement of descending into the crater in the soft, post-dawn light has few rivals on Tanzania’s safari circuit, and the combination of views, wildlife and sheer, unadulterated beauty make this an experience to savor.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 5 to 6 hours
  • Accommodation: The road from the provincial town of Karatu up to the Ngorongoro Crater rim is lined with fine lodges and other accommodation, often tucked away in the forests. The views from the tented camps, lodges and campsites up on the rim itself can be magnificent.
  • Activities: Game drives; picnics; bird watching

2. Tarangire National Park

Elephant walking at Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is a true land of giants: the park is filled with both elephants and baobab trees, and they will be soulful presences throughout your stay in this wonderful place. The park is also known for its big cats, big herds of zebra and more, and a terrific selection of accommodation both inside and immediately outside the park. It doesn’t get the same crowds as other parks in the Northern safari circuit, which means you may sometimes have a wildlife sighting all to yourself. I have spent time in Tarangire with hunting cheetah families and roaming prides of lions with not another vehicle to be seen.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 4 to 5 hours
  • Accommodation: Tarangire has terrific accommodation, with a handful of lodges and tented camps sprinkled throughout the park and around the park’s perimeter.
  • Activities: Game drives; bird watching

2,919 Tarangire Safaris

3. Lake Manyara National Park

Is that a lion on a tree?

An easy drive from Moshi, Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania’s best parks. It combines dramatic scenery – the Great Rift escarpment rises abruptly along the park’s western boundary – with a fantastic wildlife offering. Some of the earliest elephant adventures of famed elephant expert Iain Douglas-Hamilton took place here, as memorably described in Peter Matthiessen’s The Tree Where Man Was Born . The park is also well known for its tree-climbing lions: you never quite know when you’ll look up to find a lion gazing back at you. The birdlife here is incredible, especially near the park entrance and along the shores of Lake Manyara.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 4 hours
  • Accommodation: There’s lots of accommodation across a range of budgets in the town of Mto wa Mbu near the park entrance, or along the rim of the Great Rift escarpment from where there are incredible views. Inside the park, there’s a small number of good choices too.
  • Activities: Game drives; treetop canopy walks; bird watching

Lake Manyara Safaris

4. Arusha National Park

Black-and-white colobus

It’s an easier journey than you might think from the forested foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro to Arusha National Park; it’s easily reached by road from Moshi. It’s a fantastic park with some of the best scenery anywhere in East Africa. Within the park’s boundaries are Mt Meru, which is easily Mt Kilimanjaro’s rival when it comes to beauty, Ngurdoto Crater (which is often nicknamed Little Ngorongoro), and a patch of wildlife-rich grasslands known as Serengeti Ndogo (Little Serengeti). While on safari here, you might see blue monkeys and black-and-white colobuses, as well as giraffes, elephants, zebras, red duikers, waterbucks, bushbucks, klipspringers, dik-diks, buffalo and hippos. You can also go canoeing, look for some of the 400 different bird species, and trek to the summit of Mt Meru.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 2 hours
  • Accommodation: For day trips, you could easily base yourself in Moshi, Arusha, or along the Arusha–Moshi road. Inside the park are several campsites and the excellent Hatari Lodge.
  • Activities: Game drives; mountain climbing; hiking; bird watching

208 Arusha NP Safaris

5. Mkomazi National Park

Group of giraffes

Visiting Mkomazi means leaving behind safari stereotypes as much as it means leaving behind the crowds. Most safari vehicles rush past, but that’s only because the word is not yet out that Mkomazi is an exciting safari destination of the future. The mainstays of the Mkomazi experience are very much in place: exceptional views of Mt Kilimanjaro with the picturesque Usambara Mountains also providing their share of scenic beauty, offset by rugged rocky hills, baobabs and arid plains. You’ll almost certainly see topi, eland, zebra and giraffe here.

The dry country of the park is also perfectly suited to seeing some desert-adapted, much-prized species, such as the fringe-eared oryx, lesser kudu and gerenuk (the gazelle that longs to be a giraffe). The bird watching, too, is outstanding: remarkably, more than 400 species have been recorded at Mkomazi. Enclosures for reintroduced black rhinos and African wild dogs, with a view to their eventual release into the wild, also add considerable gravitas to any visit here.

  • Accommodation: You could visit on a day trip from Moshi, but there are at least two campsites inside the park as well as several permanent tented camps including Mkomazi View Camp.

6. Lake Natron & Ol Doinyo Lengai

Flamingos feeding in the lake

It may look a little far on the map, but a shortcut to Lake Natron off the Arusha–Nairobi road makes these two little-visited destinations a natural fit. A trip here to the remote Crater Highlands is such a refreshingly different experience to so many other northern Tanzanian safari destinations. For a start, Lake Natron is one of the best places in East Africa to see the massed pink populations of flamingos, and the backdrop to the lake is guaranteed to stir the soul. Ol Doinyo Lengai, just beyond Lake Natron’s southern shore, is one of the most beautiful peaks anywhere in Africa. Climb it if you wish, but wherever you are in the area, you’ll find yourself trying to glimpse the mountain known to the local Maasai as ‘Mountain of God’.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 3½ to 5 hours
  • Accommodation: Accommodation lies thinly spread not far from the southern shore of Lake Natron. These include lodges, tented camps and campgrounds.
  • Activities: Game drives; mountain climbing; bird watching

182 Lake Natron Safaris

7. West Kilimanjaro

Masaai in Tanzania

Skirting the western foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro, West Kilimanjaro is for discerning safari travelers. Here a safari can combine cultural experiences, wildlife and astonishing views, but without the visitor numbers you might expect elsewhere. The region is an important corridor for elephants migrating, and lions dispersing, between Kenya’s Amboseli National Park and northern Tanzania. Seeing these and other iconic species in the wild, thinly populated country in these parts could be a real highlight.

This is Maasai country, part of a heartland that extends all across northern Tanzania and southern Kenya. But here it’s more about encountering Maasai communities on their terms and without the hype. Best of all, the uninterrupted mountain views of not just Mt Kilimanjaro, but also Mt Meru, Mt Longido, and the Crater Highlands out to the west, are among the best anywhere in Tanzania. With a handful of secluded and exclusive tented camps in the area, it’s an emerging safari destination that won’t remain a secret for long.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 1 hour
  • Accommodation: There aren’t many choices in the area, but there is a handful of tented camps across the hills west of Mt Kilimanjaro. Shu’mata Camp is a fabulous choice.
  • Activities: Game drives

West Kilimanjaro Tours

8. Lake Chala

Lake Chala, crater lake on the border of Kenya and Tanzania

Northern Tanzania may have its fair share of beautiful crater lakes, but Lake Chala, not far from Moshi, is an excellent add-on to a safari in Mkomazi National Park. The crater’s steep, forested walls plunge down to mysterious blue-green waters, and there are so many pretty vantage points from which to enjoy the views. Like other destinations near Mt Kilimanjaro, there will rarely be anyone else in your photo, and it’s really close to Marangu, one of the main gates for Mt Kilimanjaro National Park.

  • Driving time from Moshi: 75 minutes
  • Accommodation: Most people visit on a day trip from Moshi or Marangu, but Lake Chala Safari Lodge & Campsite is a friendly camp that overlooks the lake.
  • Activities: Sightseeing

At Marangu gate, a vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi, which is approximately a one-hour journey.

Day 8: Lake Manyara National Park

Start your day with a scenic drive to Lake Manyara National Park. This park, nestled against the steep escarpment of the Rift Valley, boasts an evergreen groundwater forest and a variety of ecosystems, including acacia woodland, grassy plains, and a swampy fan delta. The expansive lake itself attracts a diverse range of mammals, birds, and wildlife species. Look out for buffalo, impala, giraffe, bushbuck, waterbuck, hippos, and elephants roaming near the lake. You may also be fortunate enough to spot rare tree-climbing lions. Keep an eye open for blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, and Olive baboon troops, which are highly active in this area. Overnight at the lodge/hotel, where you will enjoy a delightful lunch, dinner, and breakfast.

Serengeti National Park

After a satisfying breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Serengeti National Park. The name “Serengeti” originates from the Maasai language and means “endless plain.” Along the way, you have the option to visit a Maasai Village, where you can immerse yourself in Maasai culture and even partake in tribal activities. Alternatively, you can explore Olduvai Gorge, renowned as the Cradle of Humanity. The accompanying museum tells the fascinating story of human evolution from its humble beginnings in East Africa to its present dominance on Earth. Enjoy a game drive en-route to your camp, which will be either Ikoma Wildcamp, Serengeti Wildcamp, or Serengeti Wildebeest Camp. Indulge in a delicious lunch, dinner, and breakfast at the camp.

Take advantage of two full days to relax and explore the mesmerizing beauty of the Serengeti. The park is renowned for the Great Wildebeest Migration and is home to vast herds of plains game, including wildebeest, zebra, and antelope. Among them, you’ll find majestic predators such as lions and cheetahs, often found lounging among the scattered kopjes that dot the plain. The Serengeti’s landscape varies, with open grass plains in the south, savanna with scattered acacia trees in the center, and hilly, wooded grassland in the north, all adding to its diverse allure. Overnight at your choice of Ikoma Wildcamp, Serengeti Wildcamp, or Serengeti Wildebeest Camp, where you’ll be treated to delightful lunches, dinners, and breakfasts.

Ngorongoro Crater Exploration and Departure

Enjoy a morning game drive in the Serengeti before your transfer to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Upon arrival, check-in at the lodge and prepare for an exciting afternoon walking safari. Accompanied by a local Maasai guide, explore the hills and plains of Maasai country, gaining insights into this ancient culture. Along the way, you might encounter local herdsmen and observe the harmonious cohabitation of the Maasai people and the abundant wildlife within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Rest and rejuvenate at the Ngorongoro Wild Camp, where you will be treated to delicious lunches, dinners, and breakfasts.

This morning, venture into the Ngorongoro Crater floor for an unforgettable game drive and exploration. The Ngorongoro Crater is a natural wonder, 600 meters deep, 16 kilometers across, and covering an area of 265 square kilometers. As you marvel at the stunning scenery, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife inhabiting this unique ecosystem. Among the many animals, you may spot Tanzania’s last remaining black rhinos, grazing on the open grasslands of the crater floor. Other inhabitants include lions, cheetahs, elands, zebras, and gazelles. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of flamingos and other bird species at Makat Soda Lake. After an eventful day, embark on an afternoon drive back to Moshi or Arusha for your overnight stay at the hotel. Enjoy delicious lunches, dinners, and breakfasts throughout your stay.

Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari Package – The Perfect African Adventure

Helen Soto

Have you ever had a travel experience that changed your life? For many people, that’s exactly how they felt after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro as part of an exciting African safari. Roam Wild Adventure is a small business with a huge heart that provides a Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari Package, which includes guided tours through some of the most exquisite locations in Tanzania. The central feature of many of these experiences is Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. In its valleys, you’ll see some of the tallest and oldest trees in the world, as well as some of the world’s most fantastic animals. When you sign up for one of our Tanzania Safari packages, you’re not just going on a trip; you’re going on an adventure that you will never forget.

What Makes Our Tours Different?

We strive to offer experiences that have the power to change the way you think about yourself and the world around you. By helping you to fulfill your dreams and achieve one more goal on your bucket list, our tours give you a sense of accomplishment. When you finally make it to the top of one of the highest mountains in the world and see those incredible views, our goal is that you will experience the joy of overcoming obstacles that you previously thought were holding you back. One of the biggest things that make our tours different is that they are designed to provide you with a sense of empowerment that can change your perspective.

Sustainable Tourism – Giving Back To Communities and The Environment

Another element of the Roam Wild Adventure experience is that we are a member of the non-profit organization Leave No Trace. This means that we adhere to the seven principles of Leave No Trace:

  • Plan Ahead and Prepare
  • Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
  • Dispose of Waste Properly
  • Leave What You Find
  • Minimize Campfire Impacts
  • Respect Wildlife
  • Be Considerate of Other Visitors

Sustainable tourism is all about enjoying the abundant natural resources we have been given in such a way that they are preserved for future generations. We are careful never to overbook trips, preventing heavy traffic from destroying local plant life. When you go on one of our tours, you will be given the opportunity to enjoy nature without harming the environment. Then, when your group leaves, it will be as if no one has ever been there.

We partner with Tomorrow’s Air , which works to directly capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in underground chambers. Our clients can donate to this organization during their booking and help to directly impact the effects of global warming and Roam Wild Adventure will make a matching donation. We have also contributed over 500 trees to the Evertreen reforestation and maintenance project, which both improves the environment and sustains local communities by providing jobs.

We strongly believe in giving back to the places that we visit. That’s why we frequently volunteer in local communities, fundraise for local girls’ schools, help to provide education and arrange charity climbs for those looking to raise funds.

Why Tanzania?

You may not know much about Tanzania, but you’ll probably recognize a photograph of Mount Kilimanjaro. If you’d like to see fantastic wildlife, Tanzania is one of the best destinations in the world. On a safari in Tanzania, you’ll see the big five animals (lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinoceros, and leopards). More than 30% of this small African nation is covered by national parks. Indeed, the Serengeti National Park is one of the most famous and best-loved parks in Africa, in addition to being home to more than one million species of large mammals. Whether it’s the wildlife, the challenging climbs, or the unbelievable sunsets, there are many reasons why we think you’ll fall in love with Tanzania.

One of the major attractions of climbing Kilimanjaro is the challenge itself. The mountain is one of the tallest in the world, reaching a total height of 5,895 meters (19,340 feet) and requiring three days or more to reach the summit. This is a climb that will test climbers to the limit of their abilities but will also reward them with incredible views once they reach the summit. The temperature and scenery vary dramatically as the tour proceeds up the mountain, creating an exciting and memorable experience. Outdoor enthusiasts and climbers alike will thoroughly enjoy the journey and the challenge. Trails also vary in difficulty, with several being highly accessible for climbers of all levels.

Where Is Mount Kilimanjaro?

Mount Kilimanjaro is located in northern Tanzania. There are several airports within easy reach of the mountain, including Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), which is only 42km away from the mountain town of Moshi (where many of our climbing tours begin). Another option is to fly to Nairobi in Kenya and then ride a 5-hour shuttle bus ride or take the short flight to Kilimanjaro Airport.

Is It Difficult To Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro?

Out of the 30,000 people who travel to Tanzania each year to climb Kilimanjaro, 35% fail. Climbing one of the tallest mountains in the world is difficult, but that makes the achievement all the more extraordinary. In order to increase your chances of success, we recommend that you start preparing for this climb months in advance. Although Kilimanjaro does not require any technical climbing or special equipment, you will need to be in good physical condition, as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an arduous trek requiring good stamina. You’ll want to prepare yourself to adjust to different oxygen levels. Although you do not need an oxygen tank to climb the mountain, there will be less oxygen in the air at the summit. We recommend prioritizing aerobic exercises as well as strength training as you prepare for the climb. Read our blog article for the best tips on preparing for your Kilimanjaro climb.

When Is The Best Time To Climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

Tanzania has an excellent climate which makes it technically possible to make the climb up Mount Kilimanjaro year-round. However, the best time is going to be the driest times of the year – December to mid-March and mid-June to the end of October. Specifically, January and February are generally two of the best months to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This is also when the mountain is going to be at its busiest, and it allows you to avoid the rainy season, which can limit views and photography opportunities.

How Long Does It Take To Climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

The length of your climb will depend on the route you choose. Generally, the round trip to the summit and back ranges between five and nine days long. For example, the  Lemosho Route  is eight days long, while the  Rongai Route  is only seven days long.

What Is Included In the Mt. Kilimanjaro Climb

From the start of your adventure to its conclusion, we are with you every step of the way. When you arrive at Mt. Kilimanjaro airport, our guides will shuttle you to your hotel in Moshi at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The next day, you will begin your trek. As you journey up the mountain, you will get stunning views of the surrounding environment, as well as see many kinds of wildlife (such as elephants) that call the mountain home. At each stage along the way, porters will set up the accommodations in the form of tents with comfortable foam sleeping pads. A private tent and hot water will be provided for washing at each campsite. After your climb, we can also include several extra activities, including:

  • Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Plantation Tour
  • Chaga Tour (visit to the historical museum, waterfalls, and underground caves)
  • Majichemka Hot Springs
  • Or spend a day volunteering!

Route Options

At Roam Wild Adventure, we are all about giving you options. In this spirit, we have created several packages that each take you on a different route up and down the mountain. The Rongai, Northern Circuit, Lemosho, and Machame routes are all considered more scenic and take longer than the Marangu route. These are also all camping routes, whereas, on the Marangu route, you will sleep in huts and return by the same route that you reached the summit. Below, we go into the specific details of three of the best routes.

Rongai Route

The  Rongai Route  is an official Kilimanjaro trail that takes seven days to complete. Anyone who is able to hike 5-15 km at a time at a gradual incline is fit enough to complete the Rongai Route. As with many of the other routes, the trek begins and ends in Moshi, Tanzania. Rongai is a less frequented route which means that you will likely run into fewer climbers, making it even easier to take in the vast wilderness and scenery. The only downside to the Rongai route is that you cannot easily follow the recommended acclimatizing strategy. We recognize this and have added an acclimatization stage on the fourth day of the tour.

Machame Route

The  Machame Route is another option for your climb and takes 6 days to complete. This route is more challenging than the others because of its steeper and shorter length and gives you the added challenge of climbing the Great Barranco Wall. The Machame Route is the only route in which you can sleep in huts along the way, instead of tent camping.

Lemosho Route

The  Lemosho Route  is eight days long and is widely considered to be one of the most scenic routes on Mt. Kilimanjaro. You’ll have the opportunity to watch the sunrise over Africa, and you will never forget the quiet beauty as you make your way to Uhuru Peak. The 8-Day Lemosho Route trek is one of the newer and quickly becoming one of the most popular Kilimanjaro routes. It also passes around the Great Barranco Wall, also known as the “Kissing Wall” because of a short narrow section that hugs a rock outcrop along the way.

Northern Circuit Route

The Northern Circuit Route is the longest of these three, coming in at nine days to complete. It is also a newer route and ascends the peaceful western slope of the mountain. This is a quiet, rarely-used trail that gives you great opportunities to appreciate the natural beauty of the region. The Northern Circuit Route is unique in that it is the only route on the mountain that traverses nearly the entirety of Mount Kilimanjaro. You can also arrange to spend an additional night sleeping under the stars at the summit crater rim, in view of the famous Furtwangler Glacier .

In addition to Mt. Kilimanjaro climbing tours, we also provide several Safari tours. These packages give you the opportunity to take a guided tour around some of the most stunning locations in Tanzania. On these adventures, you will be accompanied by our dedicated and knowledgeable guides, who will be able to take you to the best places for spotting the most incredible wildlife.

What Is Included In The Safari Package?

A Tanzanian safari ranges in length from 2 to 5 days and depends on how much time you have and what locations you want to visit. Each of our Safari tours has different features and unique highlights. The tours range in length and can either be a morning tour, an afternoon safari, or a full-day game drive. Lunch will be provided at one of the several picnic sites located throughout the national parks. If there’s anything special you’d like to see or do, just ask your guide!

The Ngorongoro Crater

The  Ngorongoro Crater safari package is a 2-day safari that’s ideal for those adventurers that are short on time. On this tour, your guide will take you to the Ngorongoro Crater, home to over 25,000 animals and an excellent opportunity to see the big five. You will also get the chance to visit the spectacular Tarangire, the region where large families of elephants meet all year round.

The Serengeti

group of elephants drinking from a water hole in Serengeti National Park

Lake Manyara

Along the base of the Rift Valley hills lies  Lake Manyara , an unbelievably scenic destination that is also the home of baboons and tree-climbing lions. On our 3-day safari, our experienced guides will take you to this lake, as well as the Ngorongoro Crater and the Tarangire, all in one safari package.

Create Memories That Will Last A Lifetime

Kilimanjaro Meaning – Meaning of the word “Kilimanjaro”

Kilimanjaro Meaning – Meaning of the word “Kilimanjaro”

The question mostly asked but has never gotten a good answer is the origin of the name “Kilimanjaro” . It is believed that the Kilimanjaro name has roots in Swahili, Chagga and Masai languages.

There has been however no conclusive research to ascertain this claim.

The Nuttall Encyclopaedia was the first official document in the year 1907 to refer this mountain by then as the Kilima-Njaro.

There is no clear origin of this name but from the time the Europeans started exploring the Kilimanjaro in the 1860s, the mountain adopted this names somehow.

In 1885, Jim Thompson claimed that Kilima-Njaro that the locals believed that this name was interpreted as the mountain of glory (kilima) (njaro).

“Njaro” in one Kiswahili dialect means shining which is asserted that it was to refer to the snow on the top of this mountain.

There are a group people that claim the word “kilima” means mountain in Kiswahili. However the actual word means “hill”. “Mlima” is the actual word to mean mountain in Kiswahili.

The Chagga people who are the natives of the area are credited for naming the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks of the Kilimanjaro.

Famous safari parks in Africa

We have compiled a list of some of the most iconic safari destinations on the continent

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania stands out among Africa's safari parks. It boasts the highest density of large wildlife in the world. Within Ngorongoro, the abundance of fauna is so remarkable that encountering lions, elephants, rhinos, zebras and many other animals is a common experience.

Serengeti National Park is arguably Africa's most famous wildlife reserve. Here, it's possible to see the Big Five: lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, rhino, and leopard – all in just one day. The park is also home to a wealth of other iconic animals and birds, making it a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts. The legendary Great Wildebeest Migration, the largest annual movement of land animals on the planet, takes place in the Serengeti.

Tarangire National Park, a prime safari destination in Tanzania, is often the first stop on multi-day safari itineraries. It's renowned for its picturesque Tarangire River, and stunning landscapes marked by signature baobab and acacia trees. The park is home to large populations of elephants and lions. All that makes Tarangire a must-visit for those just starting their safari adventure or those who have only one day for the trip.

Namibia's Etosha National Park is one of the largest in Africa. While not as diverse as some East African parks, it still hosts a substantial number of large mammals, including elephants and rhinos. A standout feature of Etosha is its arid, desert-like landscapes. They offer a striking contrast to the lush green savannahs found elsewhere.

The Okavango Delta in Botswana, listed among the Seven Wonders of Africa, is renowned for its abundant water sources. This lush environment attracts all of Africa's largest animals, including the Big Five. It is a standout destination for all visiting the southern part of the continent.

Kruger National Park, located in northeastern South Africa, is one of Africa's largest game reserves, spanning vast landscapes of savannah, bushveld, and tropical forests. Renowned for its rich biodiversity, the park is home to an impressive array of wildlife, including the Big Five.

Popular questions about African safari tours

There are 54 African countries, but only about 15% are famous for their safari. Popular safari destinations include Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, and Zambia. Each offers unique attractions to suit various preferences and budgets. After extensive exploration across the continent, we've found that Tanzania's national parks – Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire – stand out as the richest in wildlife diversity and immersive experiences.

The quintessential African safari unfolds over an 8-10 day journey through Northern Tanzania. Beginning in Arusha National Park, travelers venture through the diverse landscapes of Tarangire, experience the wonders of the Ngorongoro Crater, spend pivotal days in the expansive Serengeti plains, and conclude their adventure at Lake Natron with its flocks of over a million flamingos. This itinerary guarantees encounters with the Big Five and a rich tapestry of African wildlife.

Notably, Ngorongoro offers a rare glimpse of black rhinos, a sight few places can provide. The Serengeti, on the other hand, showcases the awe-inspiring Great Wildebeest Migration. Over a million wildebeests, zebras, and other ungulates traverse the savannah in search of fresh pastures, creating a breathtaking natural display.

A 5-7 day safari in Africa is ideal for a first-time experience, allowing you to see the majority of safari animals. However, for true wildlife enthusiasts, an 8-10 day trip is recommended to thoroughly explore the northern national parks of Tanzania. If time permits, extending the journey to the southern and western parks will enrich your experience even further.

Some tour operators offer expansive 20+ day overland safaris spanning multiple East African countries. Those often entail spending nights in canvas tents. Such itineraries can sometimes feel rushed and cursory. They might not provide the depth and immersion each park truly deserves, given the time consumed in setting up and dismantling camps. Additionally, the comfort offered by tents can't rival that of established lodges.

For those seeking a richer, more profound safari experience, we recommend immersing oneself in the treasures of a single country. By focusing on one nation, travelers can delve deeper into its distinct culture, landscapes, and wildlife. In doing so, they stand to witness a richer tapestry of animals, landscapes, and cultures than by merely skimming across multiple Safari countries in a fleeting two-week span.

Several factors, including the destination country, the size of the travel group, and the level of lodging influence the cost of an African safari package. The overall price includes national park fees, hotels, transportation, and guide salaries, among other things.

Having experienced numerous destinations from Cape Town to Northern Africa, our team's extensive safari experiences affirm that Tanzania stands out as the premier destination, offering an unmatched blend of price and quality.

In Tanzania, travelers can expect the following price ranges:

Budget Camping Safari: Priced between $150 and $400 per person per day, this segment offers a range from basic camping setups to economical 2-2.5* hotels. We don’t organize this type of safari, but our team will be happy to give you advice if you are planning to travel to Tanzania on a budget.

Midrange Safari: Priced between $400 and $700 per person per day, this option includes comfortable 3-4* lodges or hotels with all the necessary amenities for a pleasant stay.

Luxury Safari: Ranging from $700 to $1100 per person per day, this level offers a more opulent experience, including hot air balloon rides and stays in top-tier 4-5* hotels.

Ultra Luxury Safari: For a truly exclusive tailor-made safari experience, prices span from $1100 to $5000 per person per day. This elite tier features stays in lodges favored by celebrities and top executives. Moreover, it may encompass private charter flights, bespoke walking safaris, dedicated personal chefs, and the exclusive use of camps, ensuring the utmost luxury, privacy, and tailored experiences.

These price ranges cater to diverse preferences, ensuring visitors to Tanzania find a safari that aligns with both their budget and tastes.

What to wear on an African safari?

There are no strict dress codes for an African safari. Generally, we recommend wearing khaki or light-grey-colored shorts or pants, paired with a T-shirt or shirt. A fleece jacket is advisable for cooler evenings and mornings. Footwear should include closed shoes with sturdy soles for savannah adventures, and comfortable options for relaxing at the lodge. Additionally, remember to pack sunglasses and a hat for sun protection.

In terms of colors, it's best to avoid white, which shows dust easily, blue, which attracts tsetse flies Tsetse flies are blood-sucking insects found in sub-Saharan Africa. Recognizable by their large size and distinct buzzing sound, tsetse flies can disrupt the outdoor experience for travelers. It's recommended for safari-goers to wear neutral-colored attire and take other precautions to reduce encounters with these persistent insects. , and camouflage patterns, which in African countries are reserved for the military.

Our safari expert shares more tips in this short video:

African safaris are increasingly popular among families, accounting for over 45% of visitors. While some lodges set an age limit of 5, children aged four and up often find the experience enthralling. While kids can marvel at natural wonders like the Ngorongoro Crater or Victoria Falls, it's the diverse wildlife that truly captivates and excites them the most. We recommend preparing children beforehand to make the trip even more interesting for them. African-themed books, games, or activities are fantastic for that. Going on a Tanzanian safari with children is an exciting and safe experience for the whole family. Still, parents should remain vigilant when venturing into the wild expanses of this beautiful country and not let kids wander off.

The top hiking destinations in Africa include Tanzania's iconic peaks, Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. Both are accessible to beginners, demanding no prior mountaineering expertise.

In contrast, Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains and Mount Kenya offer breathtaking panoramas but require technical climbing gear like ice axes and crampons. Additionally, the mountain infrastructure in Uganda and Kenya is less developed compared to Tanzania's well-established facilities. For those aspiring to summit these peaks, our team members, having scaled them all, advise tackling them after a Kilimanjaro expedition. It's also advantageous to acquire technical climbing experience in more forgiving terrains, such as the Alps or other suitable regions.

The ideal time for a Tanzanian safari depends on personal preferences. Opting for a rainy season safari, from November to late December and from mid-March to May, can be cost-effective due to seasonal hotel discounts. There are also much fewer other travelers in the parks. However, be prepared for potential all-day rains.

The other months, spanning from January to mid-March and June to October, generally promise excellent, sunny weather, though there can be exceptions. These dry season periods attract the most tourists. The festive season around Christmas is often the easiest. Safari prices are higher during these times.

We believe the optimal time for a safari is at the cusp of these peak season times. In late October, early March, and early June. These transitional periods offer a sweet spot where the rains are either yet to start or just ending, and the tourist influx is still minimal, providing a balanced experience of good weather and relative tranquillity.

Tanzania stands out as the best safari destination in Africa. In 2023, the country won the prestigious World's Leading Safari Destination title. Its stunningly beautiful national parks and developed infrastructure make Tanzania the ideal choice for memorable and safe African safari tours.

Another famous destination in East Africa is Kenya, famous for its Maasai Mara National Reserve and Amboseli National Park. Botswana with its Chobe National Park, South Africa with numerous wildlife reserves near Cape Town and Kruger National Park, and picturesque Namibia represent famous destinations in southern Africa.

Zambia and Zimbabwe boast the majestic Victoria Falls. The latter is famous for Matobo National Park and Hwange National Park. Uganda and Rwanda captivate with their renowned adventures in East-Central Africa that include observing mountain gorillas and other wild animals.

Combining a Kilimanjaro climb with a wildlife safari is seamless and convenient. Landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport places you just 50 km away from the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. Additionally, the popular northern safari parks are within a comfortable driving distance from the airport. For those with limited time, there are shorter 2-3 day safari options that offer a captivating glimpse into Tanzania's magnificent wildlife. Plus, bush flights are available for even swifter transitions.

East Africa boasts exquisite beach destinations, such as Quirimbas in Mozambique, Kenya's Diani and Lamu, and Anse Source D’Argent in the Seychelles. Zanzibar in Tanzania remains a sought-after spot. For a quieter retreat, Tanzania's Mnemba, Mafia, and Pemba islands offer unparalleled diving amidst untouched coral reefs.

Five Things to Know About Kilimanjaro Safaris

Kilimanjaro Safaris is an open-air safari through 110 acres called the Harambe Wildlife Preserve. Think of your trip as more of a photo safari during which you have an opportunity to see a wide variety of wildlife roaming “freely” through forests, grasslands, and savannas.

The wonderful (and sometimes frustrating) aspect of Kilimanjaro Safaris is that no two journeys are alike. You may see a lot of animals, or sometimes only a few! Here are the five things to know before you head for the savannah.

(If you’re in a hurry and just want details like where it is and how long the ride lasts, click here to jump straight to the Nuts and Bolts section.)

1. It Really Looks Like a Safari

What I have learned from the animal world, and what anyone will learn who studies it, is a renewed sense of kinship with the earth and all its inhabitants. – Walt Disney

Long before the Animal Kingdom existed, Walt wanted to create a ride featuring live animals at Disneyland. He originally proposed the idea while Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise was being designed. The impracticality of using animals soon became apparent and was shelved in favor of using animatronics.

Later, Disney World would offer something Disneyland couldn’t. Walt said, “Here in Florida, we have something special we never enjoyed at Disneyland… the blessing of size. There’s enough land here to hold all the ideas and plans we can possibly imagine.” So, in a sense, Walt’s dream of a ride featuring live animals came true when Kilimanjaro Safaris opened with Animal Kingdom on April 22, 1998.

kilimanjaro safari trip

Animal Kingdom, headed by lead designer Joe Rohde, was revolutionary in that this park was alive – but it didn’t feel like a zoo. Incredible care was taken to ensure it looked like an actual African reserve. Equally important was that the animals be afforded an environment in which they could thrive. This attention to detail and respect for the animals that you see on Kilimanjaro Safaris is a big part of what makes this park different.

An overhead sign in the queue puts it best: “These lands preserve a portion of Africa’s vanishing wildlife. Please show respect to all animals you meet. Your care will ensure their survival. Asante Sana – Thank You.”

2. Looks are Deceiving

“You can’t just let nature run wild.” – Walt Disney

All the animals appear to be roaming freely. Which is true, to a degree. The Imagineers have strategically placed camouflaged barriers built into the savanna, woodland, and rocky hills. This is done to prevent predators like lions, or potentially dangerous animals like hippos, from wandering where they shouldn’t. (It keeps guests safe, too!)

But don’t worry – your ride experience will still be more than a tame drive through the woods. You’ll see a wide variety of landscapes and different terrains, all designed as homes for African animals. Since animal behavior is unpredictable, you never know which animals you’ll see on your safari. This makes it a different experience each time you take the journey!

Up Close with Rhinos Tour

For the list-makers, some of the 34 species roaming about include giraffes, hippos, wildebeests, elephants, antelope, impalas, gazelles, crocodiles, lions, rhinos, and cheetahs! Your guide will point out which animals are visible as you drive through and provide facts about them. Like the Jungle Cruise, this ride is different every time as your guide’s information is unique to your trip.

To maximize the number of species you may be able to spot on your safari, the Imagineers have taken a few steps to encourage them to appear. Water holes, forage areas, and salt licks are placed in spots that “tempt” animals to be in sight near your path when your safari truck passes along.

Bonus fact: the rocks in the preserve can provide the animals with air conditioning during extreme heat. They can also be heated when it gets colder than it should be for the animals.

3. It’s Real, Which Means It’s Not Perfect

“I don’t want the public to see the world they live in while they’re in the park. I want them to feel they’re in another world.” – Walt Disney

Kilimanjaro Safaris is intended to be as realistic as possible to an actual safari. The entire experience is designed to help you feel as if you’re on the real thing. Truth be told, it accomplishes this goal very nicely.

However, as a consequence of the devotion to making the experience as real as possible, the roads are bumpy! As you travel through the preserve, you can be guaranteed that you’ll hit some potholes and bumps in the path that will cause your safari truck to bounce and lurch around.

kilimanjaro safari trip

Bonus fact: The ride vehicles for Kilimanjaro Safaris are custom-built trucks. They aren’t attached to a track or predetermined route of any sort. Your guide is actually driving the truck over the rough terrain. They do their best to miss any really bad dips and divots in the road, but there’s only so much room to maneuver on the paths.

As you attempt to take photos, it’s important for you to know that the vehicle isn’t guaranteed to stop at any given location. Drivers will try to accommodate guests and stop the truck when animals are visible from the path, but be prepared to click your shutter without having time to frame the perfect shot. I have a whole roll of film (yeah, it was a while ago) of blurry images as we tried our best to take pictures of wildebeests or lions to no avail.

For the best possible pictures, sit toward the outside of the seats (and Cast Members will probably recommend that little ones be seated on the inside). Even though both sides offer views of the animals, the left side is considered the best by some.

4. The Queue is a Sharp Contrast

“Whenever I go on a ride, I’m always thinking of what’s wrong with the thing and how it can be improved.” – Walt Disney

I’m totally guessing that Walt would have suggestions to improve the queue area for Kilimanjaro Safaris. To be honest, there’s not a lot to see as you wait in what is a really long queue. At one point, you pass through the “booking office.” It made me think about the plethora of details in the Jungle Cruise queue area “office.” I wished that something with similar interest and fun had been done here at the very least.

kilimanjaro safari trip

In the final stretch of your line, overhead screens show clips about the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. Frankly, there’s not a lot else to see as you wait. And because it’s an open-air queue, it’s not all that comfortable on a hot, humid Florida day despite the overhead fans.

One improvement has been made to the attraction, at least in my opinion. The earliest script for the safari included a plotline about poachers. The experience could be a little intense – even a bit scary – at times. I remember in particular one part that involved crossing a rickety bridge that appeared to almost collapse while we were on it. Honestly, I didn’t mind when either of these parts of the story were removed.

5. The Nuts and Bolts

Kilimanjaro Safaris is located at the rear of the Africa section in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park. The ride lasts 20 minutes, plus or minus. Bonus fact: It’s the longest ride in the parks that’s not a movie or show.

The safari trucks are open-air vehicles, providing you with the widest possible range of vision. Each can hold 35 guests with 3-5 guests in a row. As you might expect, the seats aren’t easy chairs and consist of a slightly padded bench with a back.

kilimanjaro safari trip

To board, you have to take a small step up into the vehicle. There are no height restrictions for Kilimanjaro Safaris. Guests in an ECV must transfer to a standard wheelchair.

There are some significant health advisories for Kilimanjaro Safaris. Disney advises that for safety, you should be in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back, or neck problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not ride. The reason for all of these is the previously discussed bumpy terrain.

Kilimanjaro Safaris is one of Animal Kingdom’s busiest attractions, along with Expedition Everest and the two Pandora attractions. Waits diminish in the late afternoon, sometimes as early as 3:30 p.m. The ride does operate when it’s raining, if possible, but it may close if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

To make the safari accessible to as many as possible, the following aids are available from Guest Services with a refundable deposit: Handheld Captioning , Video Captioning , Assistive Listening Devices, and Audio Description Devices .

Lastly, Lightning Lane via Genie+ is available.

The Bottom Line

Walt said, “You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.”

We think the Imagineers totally succeeded here. Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World author, Bob Sehlinger, agrees, saying: “Having traveled in Kenya and Tanzania, I can tell you that Disney has done an amazing job of replicating the sub-Saharan east-African landscape. As on a real African safari, what animals you see, and how many, is pretty much a matter of luck. We’ve experienced Kilimanjaro Safaris more than 100 times and had a different experience on each trip.”

How many times have you taken the safari? Which animals were you most excited to see? Let us know in the comments below. Asante!

This will be my frist time on the safari at Disney world I’m so excited about the ride and I can’t wait to ride it and I love the African aminals because I’m part African

If you enjoy the Safari, I would also recommend doing the Wild Africa Trek to anyone that has a chance to do so! This experience was fantastic and goes into places that the Safari doesn’t and is a much more “up close and personal” tour of the area.

A TYPICAL TRIP ITINERARY

Blue monkey stares out on a typical trek itinerary

A TYPICAL TREK & SAFARI ITINERARY

A typical trip itinerary with the kilimanjaro experts.

Because a trek up Africa’s Highest Mountain is probably not something they’ve done before, so it can be quite difficult for our climbers to imagine what their trip is going to look like.

With this in mind, the following is a ‘typical’ itinerary for an ‘average climber’. Of course, there is no such thing as a typical itinerary, just as there is no such thing as an average climber.

There are so many variables with every itinerary. You may not want a safari, for example; or, if you do, you may prefer to take it before the trek rather than afterwards. You may not be flying in to Tanzania but crossing overland from Kenya or elsewhere. You may or may not want a ‘free day’ before your trek to recover from your flight.

And so on and so on.

But hopefully the following schedule will give you some idea of what your trip will look like – with variations – if you book your climb with us.

And of course your own itinerary will be built to suit you, and as a result may or may not look like the example given here.

We have assumed that this person  has booked an eight-day climb on the Alternative Lemosho Route, as that is our most popular trek, and that they have a safari booked for after the trek – as again, this is what the majority of our climbers request.

Blue Kili Experts logo

Itinerary: 8-day Alternative Lemosho Route trek followed by a five-day safari

Day 1:  arrival at kilimanjaro airport..

After clearing customs and passport control, you will walk out of the airport, to be met by a crowd of taxi drivers and representatives of various agencies. Our driver will be holding up an A4 piece of paper with your name clearly printed on it. Just make yourself known to him and he will take your luggage from you and lead you to his car.

It is approximately 45 minutes from the airport to Arusha, though this travel time can be shorter/longer depending on which hotel in Arusha  (or just outside of it) you have chosen.

At the hotel you will be taken to reception. Having checked in, you then have the rest of the day/evening to relax.

Your accommodation, and the transfer from the airport, are both included as part of the standard trek package (though you may have to pay a little extra if you have chosen an upgrade on the standard hotel).

Day 2:  Free day; pre-trek briefing in evening.

It is advisable, particularly if you are flying in from North/South America, Australia/New Zealand, or the Far East, to give yourself.a full day to rest, relax and recover fully from your flight. It also gives you more time to prepare properly for the expedition ahead. You can spend this day relaxing by the pool, going on a half-day tour of Arusha with one of our guides , or even take a safari to Arusha National Park (which is a very good idea if you haven’t booked a post-trek safari). There are actually several different national parks that you can visit on a day-trip from Arusha, but Arusha National Park is perhaps the best for a pre-trek safari as it is close to Arusha and makes for a relaxing, easy introduction to Tanzania).

In the evening you will be met by your guide for the trek. He will brief you on your expedition , and c heck that your clothing and equipment will be suitable for the climb . He should also bring any clothing or equipment that you have chosen to hire from us, to make sure that it fits. This may also be the first time that he checks the oxygen saturation in your blood using a simple gadget known as a pulse oximeter. He can then use this reading as a ‘baseline’ by which the readings he takes on Kilimanjaro will be judged.

Note that if your hotel is out of the city, or if the other trekkers on your climb are spread out over several different hotels, the guide may have to brief you in the morning, during the drive to the mountain. We will try to warn you in advance if this is likely to occur.

Your accommodation, and the briefing, are both included as part of the standard trek package (though, again, you may have to pay a little extra if you have chosen an upgrade on the standard hotel). This is the second and final ‘free’ night’s accommodation. Note that the accommodation is booked on a B&B basis, so you will be responsible for finding and buying your own lunch and dinner (though the hotels do all have their own restaurants). The guide book that we give you has a guide to Arusha, including reviews of the city’s restaurants.

Day 3-10:  Alternative Lemosho Route trek, 8 days.

The itinerary for the trek itself is dealt with separately and depends, of course, on which route you actually take. But note that, whatever route you chose,  you are scheduled to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro on the morning of the penultimate day . So in this example, for an eight-day trek, you will reach the summit on the morning of the seventh day of the trek (and the ninth day of the whole trip).

Note that park fees, wages, food, camping equipment and transport to/from the mountain at the start/end of your trek, are all included as part of your trek package. The only thing that isn’t is the tips .

Day 10: Last day of trek. Return to Arusha for night in a hotel.

All being well, you will finish your trek and arrive at the exit gate of Kilimanjaro National Park at about lunchtime. Having collected your certificate as proof of a successful climb, you’ll then be taken to Moshi for a celebratory lunch with the entire crew. This is where tips are distributed. You’ll then be taken back to your hotel (or to a different one, if you’ve decided to stay somewhere different after your trek) for a well-earned shower and, perhaps, a celebratory dinner with your fellow trekkers before you all go your separate ways the next morning.

If you’ve booked a safari for the next day, your driver will visit you this evening for a quick briefing about the safari .

If you have already spent two nights in Arusha, then you will have to pay for this third night’s accommodation – it is not part of your trek package.

(Note, too, that if you are pressed for time, it is possible to fly out from Kilimanjaro Airport this evening (and there are several airlines with evening flights). If you need to do this, we will take you straight from the lunch in Moshi to the airport. We can secure you a day room at a hotel convenient for the airport, so you can have a shower before catching your flight – though note these are a lot more expensive than they should be! If you have any bags left behind at the hotel in Arusha, we can bring them to you at the airport so you’ll be reunited with them before your flight.)

Day 11-15: Four-day safari, Northern Circuit.

Again, the details of this safari will vary from person to person. Some will want a five-day safari so they can spend some time in the Serengeti and maybe even go on a balloon safari. Others will be happy with just a simple day tour to one of the more convenient parks such as Manyara or Tarangire.

Day 15: End of safari. Return to hotel.

At the end of your safari, we will again return you to you hotel in Arusha. Once again, if you have a flight out this evening, we can take you straight to the airport after your safari (taking you via the hotel if necessary so you can pick up any luggage you left at the hotel, and perhaps have some dinner if you have the time). Alternatively, you can spend one more night at your hotel (again, this will be at your expense).

Day 16: Transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for flight home.

The driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the airport in good time to check in for your flight (this usually means you’ll be collected from your hotel approximately three hours prior to the departure of your flight).
