During the dry months from June to September, you can enjoy breathtaking views and hiking trails. While in the winter, Hurricane Ridge transforms into a winter wonderland, attracting skiers and snowboarders. But be prepared to pay an entrance fee or have your National Park Pass handy!

If you’re a nature lover, this place will leave you awestruck. Also, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the native wildlife, including deer, marmots, and even the elusive Olympic marmot. The Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center provides valuable information about the area’s flora and fauna, making your visit both educational and fun.

2. Sol Duc Falls: A Serene Cascade Retreat & Hot Springs

A visit to Sol Duc Falls is a must for nature enthusiasts. To get there, drive 35 miles west of Port Angeles on Highway 101 and then turn onto Sol Duc Hot Springs Road for 12 miles. The falls are at their best during spring and summer, surrounded by lush greenery. Avoid the high tourist season in July and August, if you’d like a more tranquil experience.

Once you arrive, take a short and pleasant hike through the old-growth forest, following the well-marked trails. The gentle roar of the cascading waters will draw you nearer to the falls, where you’ll witness the awe-inspiring sight of water tumbling over moss-covered rocks. Don’t forget your camera – this is a picture-perfect spot!

Also, don’t forget your National Park Pass for this one too!

Nestled deep within Olympic National Park, there is also the Sol Duc Hot Spring, which is a hidden oasis of relaxation and rejuvenation. To reach this serene sanctuary, take a scenic drive along Sol Duc Road, following the signs leading to the resort.

As you step into the Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort, you’ll be transported to a world of tranquility. Immerse yourself in the mineral-rich, geothermal waters that are believed to hold healing properties. The resort features three inviting pools, each offering a unique experience. The large, Olympic-sized pool is perfect for swimming and splashing, while the two smaller mineral pools are ideal for soaking away your worries amidst nature’s soothing embrace.

The hot springs are open year-round, making every season an opportunity to bask in the restorative warmth of the waters. For a quieter experience, consider visiting during weekdays or during the off-peak months. The hot springs are accessible to day visitors and resort guests. Day passes for adults are $20, while children and seniors enjoy discounted rates. The pools are open from morning till evening, allowing you to enjoy both daytime and twilight soaks, for about an hour and a half, each visit.

Also, it’s worth noting that the Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort also offers cozy accommodations, allowing you to extend your stay and fully immerse yourself in the restful ambiance of the hot springs and it’s surroundings.

We’ve got to admit, this is probably one of our favorite things to do in Port Angeles!

Port Angeles, on the north end of the Olympic Peninsula is an ideal base for exploring the nearby Olympic National Park . But other things to do run aplenty in this rain shadow region. From orca whale sightings to lavender fields soaked in purple, wonderful vacation memories await in every direction from Port Angeles.

Olympic National Park is often the first reason visitors flock to Port Angeles. The park encompasses nearly one million acres, and several of its most iconic sightseeing areas are accessible from Port Angeles within a short drive. Hurricane Ridge and Lake Crescent are two notable spots, each within a 30-minute drive, and both offer a taste of the diverse landscapes within the park.

What keeps people coming back to Port Angeles is the friendly community and other in-town tourist attractions. The coast-spanning Olympic Discovery Trail is the main non-motorized corridor in town. Public parks, local establishments, and a unique sand spit line this paved path, as well as friendly locals.

Hurricane Ridge offers one of the most dramatic Olympic National Park views with a 17-mile drive from the city. This scenic vista is a top spot for any visit to the park, let alone a must-do experience when visiting Port Angeles.

The drive on Hurricane Ridge Road starts just after the Olympic National Park Visitor Center on the south side of town. The road passes by the popular Heart O' the Hills Campground, one of the best places to go camping in Olympic National Park . Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center awaits at the top, alongside a breathtaking view of the Olympic range.

Simply staring in awe at the craggy mountains from the visitor center's back porch is time well spent. The visitor center also provides exhibits, restroom facilities, and interpretive presentations. Visitors also gain a better perspective of the massive horizon via the network of trails spanning from the visitor center.

Things to Do in Winter: Hurricane Ridge also entices visitors throughout the winter. Uphill traffic is allowed on Hurricane Ridge Road Friday through Sunday and some holiday weekends during the winter (weather permitting). Cars need to be equipped with traction devices like chains. At the snowy summit, warmly dressed visitors enjoy snowshoeing, sledding, and downhill endeavors at the Hurricane Ridge Ski and Snowboard Area.

One of the best ways to tour the coastal landscapes of Port Angeles is via bicycle. The slower pace of travel allows more time to enjoy the unique environment at the continent's edge. And the number one route to follow is the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT) , which cruises right through the downtown waterfront.

The ODT is a 130-mile route navigating the Olympic Peninsula's northern coast. The trail extends from Port Townsend to La Push and crosses five converted railroad trusses among many postcard-worthy environments. The trail is still in development and currently comprises a combination of paved roads, gravel roads, and bike paths. Non-motorized sections are added to the route every year.

The ODT section connecting to downtown Port Angeles is well developed, with a paved pathway free of vehicle traffic. It's an excellent bike path to reach the lavender fields of Sequim to the east. The trail extends west to Lake Crescent with a 25-mile ride, including sections on a gravel road.

Places in Port Angeles like Sound Bike & Kayak and Adventures Through Kayaking have bicycles available for rent.

Ediz Hook is a three-mile, crescent-shaped sand spit extending from the Port Angeles shoreline. Also referred to as "the Spit" or "the Hook," this unique landform offers easy adventures from the city. Ediz Hook Road extends along the spit for vehicle traffic. The recommended route is via bicycle or walking the improvised trail next to the roadway.

What immediately stands out on The Spit is the magnificent view of Port Angeles backed by the Olympic Mountains . On cloudless afternoons, this vantage point is reason enough to visit. The Hook also provides shelter from the waves of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This protection makes for an excellent spot to launch a kayak or canoe .

The most abundant parking areas are near the beginning of the Spit. Here, it's easy to access the calm water and shoreline.

Other popular water activities include scuba diving and paddleboarding. A public boat launch for motorized vehicles is near the U.S. Coast Guard Station at the far end of the Spit.

Olympic National Park Visitor Center is an excellent place to visit for park information and trip suggestions. It's open seven days a week and is conveniently close to the town center. A staffed information desk at the visitor center is happy to answer or recommend a destination within the park. They also provide the most up-to-date information on park conditions and places to visit.

Exhibits: The visitor center also has exhibits and hands-on activities for kids. These interpretive pieces touch upon the vast and wild ecosystem encompassed by the Olympic Peninsula, including the park's wildlife. The information also covers the native and still residing tribes of the Olympic Peninsula.

Olympic National Park Wilderness Information Center is also at the visitor center. Permits are required for all wilderness camping in Olympic National Park, and this is the spot to plan and book backcountry travel. The staff here are available to answer all questions and advise about backpacking within the park.

Lake Crescent, 20 miles west, is another crown jewel of Olympic National Park near Port Angeles. This incredibly deep and clear glacially carved lake is abundant with natural appeal. It also features campgrounds, hiking trails, and boat docks spread across its entire shoreline.

Activities: A popular activity is picnicking at places like East Beach and Bovee's Meadow , where swimming beaches are also available. Non-motorized boating is also a favorite way to experience Lake Crescent. Public boat docks are on either end of the lake.

Hiking: A visit to Lake Crescent isn't complete without hiking around the shoreline a bit. One of Olympic's best hiking trails, Marymere Falls , starts from the Storm King Ranger Station on the lake's southeast shore. The less-than-a-mile trek encounters little elevation gain along the way, and the rushing water at the end of the trail is always a family favorite to experience.

Where to Stay: The historic Lake Crescent Lodge is on the southeast side of the lake, offering a cozy lobby with a stone fireplace. The Fairholme Campground , on the west side of the lake, also provides a place to stay for a weekend trip from Port Angeles.

Of the many breathtaking landscapes in Olympic National Park, the mossy rainforests are perhaps the most magical. It's nothing short of hiking through a terrarium, navigating the many shades of green overflowing into every available nook and cranny of the forest. This wild and lush landscape adds to the many reasons why Olympic is one of the best national parks in Washington .

The Hoh Rain Forest within the park is one of the most popular ways to dive into the rainforest. The Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center is a scenic two-hour drive from Port Angeles. At the visitor center, the iconic 17.3-mile Hoh River Trail heads to the base of Mt. Olympus. Several family-friendly trails also span throughout the thick landscape surrounding the visitor center, including the popular "Hall of Mosses."

Bogachiel State Park offers a shorter drive from Port Angeles and similar access to a less-crowded rainforest area. Farther south in the park and a longer drive, the Quinault and Queets rainforest areas are also verdant, with hiking trails and scenery.

Tour: If you are looking for an easy way to explore the area, you can join a Hoh Rain Forest and Rialto Beach Guided Tour in Olympic National Park . This option takes care of the transportation from the Visitor Center and includes a guided one- or two-mile hike with a naturalist and a stop at Rialto Beach.

The Feiro Marine Life Center offers up-close looks at native marine life near the Olympic Coast Discovery Center on the waterfront. This fun place to visit provides a wide array of aquariums and touch-tanks with seawater straight from the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This hands-on facility also features educational opportunities and academic lectures.

Visitors encounter sea cucumbers, hermit crabs, and other aquatic creatures at the Marine Life Center. The museum also has several exhibits detailing the diverse ecosystem found just offshore. The naturalists at the Feiro Marine Life Center are perhaps the most valuable resource, however. These oceanic experts are happy to share their favorite local tide pool spots.

With several dramatic landscapes to explore, the rugged western coast of Olympic National Park should be high on the list. Olympic protects over 70 miles of the most rugged coastline in the country. Jutting sea stacks, forested headlands, and a wild sense of exploration define much of the mesmerizing landscape.

Port Angeles makes for an excellent basecamp for day trips to the Pacific coast. One of the closest coastal areas to the city is Rialto Beach , approximately 70 miles away in the park's Mora area. The classic scenery of coastal Olympic National Park presents itself at this blissful beach backed by a dense forest.

The immediate beach encountered near the large parking area is breathtaking enough. But visitors often head north along the coastline, where the shoreline continues to impress. Hike approximately two miles north, and the eye-catching Hole-in-the-Wall rock offers a treasure chest of intertidal areas to explore.

Other beaches of interest line the coast north and south of Rialto Beach. The southern coast has more resources for visitors and places to stop, while the more rugged northern coast is primed for extended backpacking trips.

Port Angeles is a prime spot for whale sightings. And not just a single species—humpback, orca, minke, and gray whales make appearances throughout the year. The city offers several ways to enjoy these remarkable wildlife sightings, including land-based viewing areas and guided tours.

Several sites near Port Angeles are on The Whale Trail , an international collection of prime whale-watching sites. Salt Creek Recreation Area , a 20-minute drive from Port Angeles, is one such Whale Trail location where several vantage points offer a spectacular view. Tongue Point , within the Recreation Area, is a particularly great spot to see whale spouts.

One of the most guaranteed ways to spot whales is by hopping on a guided tour. Several companies in the region offer knowledgeable navigation of the water. Puget Sound Express offers one of the most popular guided whale watching trips from Port Angeles . This half-day tour departs from downtown seven days a week between May and October.

The sunny city of Sequim sits 18 miles east of Port Angeles, easily accessible with a bike ride on the Olympic Discovery Trail . Sequim, pronounced "Squim," has several scenic attractions to explore. But only one earns the city the title of " Lavender Capital of North America ."

The sunny weather of the Olympic Rain Shadow nourishes thousands of lavender plants in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Lavender operations in the area comprise almost exclusively local and family farms. This aromatic agriculture gets its first tint of purple near late June, with a full burst of color approximately two weeks after.

The community celebrates the full bloom with the Washington Lavender Festival in July. This time of year, visitors make good use of the Sequim Lavender Trail , which connects all the local farms in the region. Alongside an abundance of eye-catching colors, this farms host small events and receptions. Gift shops at the farms encourage visitors to support local operations.

Sol Duc Falls is an iconic display of gravity near Port Angeles, accessible within an hour's drive. Its size and scenic beauty add to its popularity, as well as the relatively easy hike to reach the falls. It takes approximately 1.6 miles to Sol Duc Falls and back, with less than 200 feet of elevation .

A scenic bridge passes over the water gushing through a narrow slot canyon. This is an excellent place to pose for a photograph, though an occasionally crowded one during peak summer visits. The area also has a few picnic benches to rest up any feet before hiking back.

If you're looking for a good backcountry trip from Port Angeles, Sol Duc Falls is a recommended starting point. The trail continues beyond Sol Duc Falls, eventually ascending into the Seven Lakes Basin of the park. This route is part of the High Divide Loop, which offers up-close views of Mount Olympus.

Permits are required to spend the night in the park's backcountry, which is among the best campgrounds in Olympic National Park .

Among its many mystical atmospheres, Olympic National Park is also home to one of Washington's best hot springs . Situated south of Lake Crescent , and an hour's drive from Port Angeles, Sol Duc Hot Springs is well worth the day trip or overnight visit.

Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort , a charming and rustic lodge operated by a concessionaire within the park, maintains the hot-water pools. The resort has three mineral hot soaking pools and one freshwater pool. The hot water is accessible to the public, not just guests, with the price of admission.

This area of the park caters to all-day adventures. The nearby hike to Sol Duc Falls offers a scenic 1.6-mile round trip to a postcard-worthy waterfall. It is a recommended way to achieve sore muscles before a soak. The drive to Sol Duc passes by the southern shores of Lake Crescent, which offers several side adventures to tack onto a day.

On the Port Angeles waterfront, the Olympic Coast Discovery Center offers an excellent resource for making the most out of a coastal vacation. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operates the facility and offers detailed information about the coastal region—specifically, everything visitors need to know about the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary.

The Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary encompasses 3,188 square miles off the peninsula's rugged west coast. Knowledgeable volunteers at the Discovery Center are happy to help plan any voyage along this part of the peninsula. The Discovery Center is open daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, always with free admission.

The Olympic Peninsula holds particular interest for fans of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. Her suspenseful and best-selling vampire romance novels take place in the nearby community of Forks, approximately an hour's drive from Port Angeles. But as any fan knows, Port Angeles is also home to some central plot locations.

Bella and Edward's first date took place at Bella Italia on First Street. Patrons today can order the mushroom ravioli or whatever suits their cravings while indulging in the literary atmosphere.

The enthusiasm for Twilight in Port Angeles is low-key if visitors don't know where to look. The real fan experience is in Forks, where a city-sponsored Twilight Map highlights real-life locations from the book.

Forks also sponsors the annual Forever Twilight in Forks festival in September. This fandom event brings in thousands of like-minded readers with a plethora of unique experiences and special speakers.

Victoria, British Columbia, is a quick 90-minute ferry ride from Port Angeles. This relatively small capital city packs many things to do into a walkable vacation. It's a popular destination for several reasons, including stately architecture and bountiful gardens, and perhaps because of its unusually mild climate—making it one of the warmest places in Canada come winter .

Black Ball Ferry Line operates the passenger and vehicle ferry to Victoria from Port Angeles. The ferry ride itself is fun, as the boat cuts through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, as well as a cafeteria, gift shop, and solarium.

With a population of about 20,000, Port Angeles is not a huge place. However, it’s a wonderful base to enjoy some of Washington’s best attractions while having easy access to amenities and facilities. Here’s what you can get up to in Port Angeles.

Port Angeles is all about nature, and you don’t have to venture too far from the city center to get some great views. The Port Angels City Pier provides a great vantage point over the water. If you can, try to make it here to catch a sunrise or sunset, or maybe just watch the fog roll in!

There’s also a fishing pier for angles, plus a few placards with info about the area and the marine life that call these waters home. Once you’re done at the pier, you can wander into town to grab a bite to eat or hit up the weekend farmers market (Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm).

With incredible views of the Olympic Mountain Range, the Olympic Discovery Trail is a popular cycling, horseback riding, or hiking trail that spans over 130 miles between Port Townsend and La Push.

With Port Angeles roughly in the center, you can leave the town and travel in either direction! 

The entire trail is beautiful, but the Elwha River to Lake Crescent stretch, a sacred Indigenous area, is widely regarded as the most stunning. 

Ediz Hook is a sand spit extending from Port Angeles that acts as a natural harbor and offers protection from the rough Pacific Ocean. For these reasons, it’s a prime location for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing, and even scuba diving.

It’s not the most scenic harbor you’ll lay your eyes on, but you can see the Olympic Mountains, and it’s so conveniently located for some watersports fun.

It’s also worth exploring the three-mile Ediz Hook on land by either walking or cycling (or you can drive too). You can bring a picnic to the “Hook” as well as there are pebbly beaches and picnic spots.

Stop at Sunrise Meats in town before heading out on your adventures. The jerky here is to die for (especially the salmon!) and makes for good snacking on a road trip or a nice accompaniment to a scenic picnic along the coast.

The prices are good, too, so you won’t have to worry about going over budget for this famous treat.

Distance: 3.4 miles Type of Trail : Out & Back Difficulty: Moderate Elevation Gain: 826 ft

Get your heart racing on Hurricane Hill via Hurricane Ridge Trail . The trail is 3.4 miles out and back and should take just under two hours to complete. You’ll get stunning views of the Olympic Mountains and maybe even spot a marmot or mountain goat.

The Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center is also worth a stop if the Hurricane Hill trail is a bit too much for you. You’ll get vistas of the snow-sprinkled mountains, and there are easier trails just behind the center, like the Big Meadows Trail .

The Washington coast is a renowned whale-watching destination, so unsurprisingly, hopping on a whale-watching tour is one of the best things to do in Port Angeles.

Various types of whales and other marine life migrate through this area throughout the year, including humpbacks, grey, and mink whales, among others.

There are several tours available, but you could also watch for whales at different points around town. Some of the best spots for whale watching in Port Angeles include the Strait of Juan de Fuca near the Ediz Spit, First Beach in La Push, and the San Juan Islands.

Popular for trekking and camping, Switchback Trail boasts surreal views over the panoramic landscape below.

As the name suggests, there are plenty of switchbacks on the trail, so make sure you’re prepared! It’s a seasonal trail, with snow until quite late in the year. Unlike the Hurricane Hills trail, you may get this one to yourself (we did during our visit!). It’s a bit off the path, but well worth the steep climb.

From above, you’ll get panoramas of jagged rocks and Mount Angeles. Once you get to the top of the ridge, you can decide if you want to head back down or continue along the ridge to Lake Angeles and the campgrounds or along Heather Pass to explore other peaks.

Lined by mountains and gorgeous fir trees, Lake Crescent is an eight-square-mile lake with crystal-clear waters.

The perfect place for spending a day relaxing – there are some small beach areas to laze back on, like at Fairholme or East Beach, or you can take a kayak out on the lake itself.

If you brought your own, head to the Mount Storm King Ranger Station to park, and you’ll see the put-in. If you want to rent, head to Fairholme or Lake Cresent Lodge.

As if that’s not enough, there are some great hikes in the area too. You’ll need to spend a few days at this lake to really take it in. Our three top hikes at Lake Cresent are below.

Distance: 4.1 miles Type of Trail : Out & Back Difficulty: Hard Elevation Gain: 2,106 ft

If you want a real challenge, Mount Storm King is one of the best things to do in Port Angeles. Climbing up from Lake Crescent, it’s a 4.1-mile trail with over 2,000 feet of elevation gain, part of which involves a (somewhat sketchy) rope climb and scrambling across rocks.

But if you’re determined to take the challenge, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most incredible views of Lake Crescent and beyond. Wear good shoes and start early, the summit is very small, and you may have to wait to get up there if you start too late in the day.

Distance: 1.7 Type of Trail : Out & Back Difficulty: Easy Elevation Gain: 298

Don’t fancy the uphill climb to Mount Storm King? Don’t worry; there are easier ways to enjoy the scenery around Lake Crescent!

Marymere Falls has the same trailhead, and it is an easy 1.7-mile out-and-back trail that meanders through woodland and terminates at the gorgeous 89-foot-high falls. For any over-achievers, this is a great hike to tack on after you finish Mount Storm King.

This is one of the most popular waterfalls in Washington .

Distance: 11.2 miles Type of Trail : Out & Back Difficulty: Easy Elevation Gain: 410 ft

The Spruce Railroad Trail is a long but easy and accessible hike, perfect for taking in waterfront views of Lake Crescent. Most of the route is flat and paved, and while the distance is 11.2 miles, you could always walk it a bit before turning around. 

You’ll have to at least make it to the Devil’s Punchbowl area of the hike, where you’ll see the water get sucked in and out of a cove while you walk it on a beautiful bridge.

People like to jump off and swim in this hole, but the water is FREEZING, so this is your warning. This spot is only about a mile into the hike. Go three miles into the walk, and you’ll find the tunnel.

Port Angeles (and the Olympic Peninsula as a whole) is home to a thriving art scene. I mean, look at the scenery – the inspiration is endless! There are several galleries in town, and whether you’re a huge fan of art or you’re just looking for things to do in Port Angeles on a rainy day, they are worth checking out.

The Port Angeles Fine Art Center is free to enter and showcases local art and pieces created with raw natural materials. Northwest Native Expressions sits off Highway 101 in Sequim and features baskets, art prints, carvings, and more.

There’s also an art walk in the summer, plus an art mural trail in downtown Port Angeles.

Sol Duc Falls is a 15-foot drop with three “shoots,” sitting in a woodland area that’s great for engaging in nature or photography. It sits at the end of a nature trail from the Sol Duc Falls parking lot, which is an easy and flat hike of 1.6 miles.

BUT—You could also take the longer Lover’s Lane Loop , which is 5.8 miles, and traverse through the forest! We love this version because the mossy verdant rainforest is enchanting to meander through, and the trail is longer but still easy.

You’ll also happen upon a few other secret smaller waterfalls, which are perfect for picnicking or dipping your aching feet in for a refresh.

If you want to be one with nature without enduring a long hike, taking a soak in Sol Duc Springs is one of the best things to do in Port Angeles. The springs are located in the heart of Olympic National park, and you’ll need to pay to access them ($18 per person).

Once you enter the resort, you’ll have access to the springs, which look like normal pools but are filled with rejuvenating water from the Sol Duc Springs. If one day of soaking isn’t enough, you can book a room at the resort, or snag a campsite at the Sol Duc Hot Springs RV Park & Campground .

Note that the resort is only open seasonally (late March to late October)

Party Port Angeles style at one of the many festivals held here each year.

One of the most famous is the Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival, held each October. There’s obviously tons of fresh seafood on offer, but there are other fun events at this festival, like live music, Native American history, U.S. Coast Guard Air-Sea Rescue demonstrations, and more.

Other famous festivals worth waiting for include the Summertide Solstice Art Festival in June, the Washington State International Kite Festival in August, and the Wintertide Festival of Lights in December.

The New Dungeness Lighthouse is one of the best things to do in Port Angeles for history lovers.

Built in 1857, it is the second oldest lighthouse in Washington. It stands at the end of the Dungeness Spit, the world’s longest natural sand spit.

It’s a five-mile hike from the parking lot to the lighthouse, and you can take in amazing views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca from here! 

If the lighthouse wasn’t enough to satisfy your history buff itch, take a guided tour of the Port Angeles underground. In the early 1900s, the city decided to elevate the downtown area to avoid flooding. Many of the older buildings were lost, but some still remain to this day.

You can actually visit these tunnels below the streets and learn about the process of raising the streets on a guided tour, and it’s one of the most fascinating things to do in Port Angeles.

Rialto Beach is classic coastal Washington, with crashing waves and glorious sea stacks.

From here, you can walk to the mysterious Hole in the Wall , a sea stack with a hole carved out of it. It’s about a 3.4-mile out-and-back hike spanning along the beachfront. 

This is one of the must-do hikes in the state, no less one of the best things to do from Port Angeles. It’s only about an hour and a half, so it will make a perfect day trip.

Plus, in the same day, you can easily add on La Push with just 20 minutes more driving…

Close to Forks, a town made famous because of its Twilight filming locations , La Push Beach extends across the Pacific Coastline. It is composed of not one but three beaches, which are great for surfing and relaxing! 

The easiest to reach is La Push One, although the most popular is actually La Push Two, which is a ¾-mile walk from the parking lot.

La Push Three is the most remote, a 3.6-mile round trip hike from the parking lot, but it’s also the quietest – perfect if you want some solitude!

If you’re up for a night away from Port Angeles, you can actually camp at Second and Third Beach, just make sure to grab your permits beforehand.

If you’re searching for underrated things to do in Port Angeles, look no further than Salt Creek National Recreation Area. This scenic area is much less crowded than better known spots like Olympic National Park and Sol Duc Falls, but it’s every bit as interesting and has significantly fewer visitors.

There is an underwater section of the park with great diving and tide pooling opportunities, especially in the summer and fall when the kelp forest is at its peak. If you prefer to stay dry, you can kayak along the coastline, go for a hike , or check out the old WWII bunkers.

One of the best things to do in Port Angeles is actually to leave the country—Grab your passport and head north!

Coho Ferry offers four return trips to Victoria in British Columbia every day in the summer. The first ferry goes at 8:20 am, and the last ferry from Victoria departs at 7:30 pm (there is a more reduced service in the fall, winter and spring). 

Victoria is a gorgeous city, the perfect size for a day trip, with architecture that will make you feel like you’re in Europe. British colonial history is still evident today in tearooms, double-decker buses, an abundance of museums, and the opportunity to explore the British Columbia Parliament Building. 

In fact, if you’re super keen on visiting Canada during your visit to Washington, Vancouver is only a hop skip, and a jump away if you’re looking for weekend trips from Seattle ! You can easily check out some of the things Canada is famous for , see its incredible nature, and perhaps stay across the border a bit longer than you had planned.

Are you wanting to travel to Olympic National Park but not sure where to base yourself? After spending over a week near Port Angeles and exploring the city, nearby area, and Olympic National Park I can easily say Port Angeles is a great place to stay and offers a lot of things to do! 

Let’s get into more details about Port Angeles, how to get there, and what Port Angeles activities you should do while staying here!

About Port Angeles, WA

Located on the Olympic Peninsula Port Angeles Washington is known as the gateway city to Olympic National Park. A small charming Pacific Northwest Town just a skip away from Canada. You can expect all of the small town vibes here as there aren’t any chains, everything is local. 

So while you’re getting outdoors to see the diversity of the ocean, Olympic National Forest, and National Park as well as all of the other nearby outdoor beauty Port Angeles is a great place to base yourself when exploring. But there are also plenty of Port Angeles attractions to experience as well.

How to get there

The easiest and most cost-effective way to get to Port Angeles would be to fly into either Tacoma or Seattle and then drive to Port Angeles.

Driving from Seattle you can take two different routes. One includes a ferry and will take just under 3 hours but is less distance at about 85 miles. This time, however, isn’t taking into account loading and unloading the ferry so it can take even longer.

The second route from Seattle will take about 2 and a half hours but is just under 140 miles. You’re basically looping south through Tacoma and then back north before getting onto Highway 101 to Port Angeles. 

The drive from Tacoma will be just about 2 hours to Port Angeles, cutting off the distance between Seattle and Tacoma.

Depending on prices and timetables of flights I would decide which airport to fly into by which one works better with your schedule.

There is an airport in Port Angeles with limited flights. You will likely have to lay over 1-2 times before arriving so the more efficient option will be to fly to either Seattle or Tacoma and rent a car from there.

Or, you could road trip and visit with your car or RV like we did! We stayed a little bit outside of Port Angeles but spent a lot of time in this cute city. I’ll share more about places to stay (Port Angeles hotels) in a bit!

Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course

This golf course is actually located in the nearby town of Sequim. Less than a 30 minute drive from Port Angeles this golf course offers sweeping views.

Every way you turn you see mountains, ocean views, and even wildlife! 

Drive Ediz Hook Road

Ediz Hook is a three mile long skinny sand spit off of the northern part of the Olympic Peninsula in Port Angeles, WA. You can drive most of it (about 1 ½ to 2 miles out) and there are many spots to pull off to relax and have a picnic or just take in the sweeping views of Port Angeles.

Harborview Park is a great spot along Ediz Hook to stop and well as its name suggests, take in views of the nearby harbor. 

Olympic Discovery Trail

The Olympic Discovery Trail is a trail that is to be used for non-motorized multi-use exploring. The trail can be used to hike, bike, or ride a horse, and generally leashed pets are also allowed. So, if you’re bringing a bike with you this would be a perfect activity to add to the best things to do in Port Angeles, Washington! 

The trail starts in Port Townsend and ends at the Pacific Ocean Shores. The trail is broken up into many different trail segments and there are designated stops on the specific segment maps. These maps are helpful in showing the trail surface (paved, gravel, dirt) and also the trail grade so you’re not surprised after setting out on the trail. 

The West Central segment of the trail is from Port Angeles along Lake Crescent and ends on Highway 101 at the top of Fairholm Hill. This segment of the Olympic Discover Trail (or ODT as the locals call it!) is just under 32 miles. 

Olympic National Park Visitor Center

One of the main visitor centers for the Olympic National Park is in Port Angeles. Sometimes it’s referred to as the Port Angeles Visitor Center. It’s located at 3002 Mount Angeles Road, Port Angeles, WA 98362. 

Here you can get your National Park Passport stamped, view the exhibits detailing the history of the park and get information and plan your exploration of the park.

Feiro Marine Life Center

Throughout Port Angeles and the surrounding areas of the Olympic Peninsula, there are many stunning places to observe marine life. At the Feiro Marine Life Center there are touch tanks to get up close and personal with many aquatic animals. 

Not only that, but they can offer tips and the best locations to visit tidepools in the area. If you’re planning on seeing some tidepools, stopping at the Marine Life Center first should be on your agenda!

Whale Watching

There are several different whale watching tour companies located in Port Angeles, WA. Cruising out to sea within the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Victoria, B.C. Canada’s harbor there are whales in these waters. 

Whales can be seen year round in Port Angeles but the best time to go on a whale watching tour is between March and November. The Olympic Peninsula has many great viewing spots to see whales as their pods swim these routes. 

Visit The Lavender Capital of North America

Adding to the list of things to do near Port Angeles, visit the nearby city of Sequim which is known as the lavender capital of North America . The best time of year to visit is mid-July to see the lavender in full bloom. 

There are many different farms you can visit. Most farms are open for visitors all summer and each has its own opening hours and offerings. 

Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary

The Marine Sanctuary is actually located farther away from Port Angeles. But, the Olympic Coast Discovery Center is located on the Port Angeles waterfront. 

The areas of Neah Bay, La Push, Kalaloch along the coast of the Olympic peninsula are a part of the Marine Sanctuary. These National Marine Sanctuaries (The Olympic Coast is one of 15 in the United States!) are important in an effort to conserve and protect marine wildlife and ecosystems. Basically it’s a National wildlife refuge area. 

Be sure to check the opening hours of the Discovery Center before your visit as they’re currently only open on Wednesdays and the weekends. During the offseason, hours may be limited so contact them prior to your visit.

Port Angeles Twilight Attractions

Located southwest of Port Angeles a little over an hour’s drive away is Forks, WA, a city put on the map by the Twilight books and movies written by Stephenie Meyer. This small town definitely plays it up with signs as referenced in the series as well as a lot of information and props in the tourist visitor center. 

In the books and movies, Bella Swan works at Newton’s Olympic Outfitters (which is actually fictional.) But, it’s based on an actual business in Forks, Forks Outfitters & Thriftway . This is a great place to pop in for snacks or anything you may need. They even have an onsite coffee shop. 

There are also several signs in the town of Forks indicating the treaty line and other nods to the fictional book series. If you’re a Twilight fan and in Port Angeles, you should definitely make the drive to Forks, WA. 

Day Trip to Victoria, Canada

You can take a ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, B.C., Canada. Black ball ferry line leaves from the Port Angeles port. The journey only takes 90 minutes and you can sit back and enjoy the scenery of the stunning Strait of Juan de Fuca. 

Victoria has a lot to offer, so just a day trip if planned out can allow you time to see many of the major highlights. But I can’t promise you won’t want to return in the future to explore further!

NOTE : If you’re planning on taking the ferry to Canada even just for the day, be sure to bring your passport with you as you will be required to go through immigration at the pier. 

Where to stay

While exploring the area, we stayed a little outside of Port Angeles as we had our RV. It was the perfect serene location! Close to exploring Lake Crescent and areas of Olympic National Park while frequently eating and drinking all around Port Angeles. 

I added some additional places that I would recommend staying that are in Port Angeles proper. 

Crescent Beach Park RV

Located a little outside of Port Angeles, yet in close enough proximity to explore the city and the surrounding Olympic Peninsula including Olympic National Park, Crescent Beach Park RV was the perfect spot to stay! 

It was quiet and secluded and literally right across the beach. Taking early morning and late night strolls along the beach was a favorite while we lived out of our RV during a summer of relocation. This was one of the more remote spots we stayed, and our RV internet solution still worked well!

Salt Creek Recreation Area

If you’re looking to camp rather than have an RV, Salt Creek Recreation Area in Port Angeles, WA offers campsites for camping. You can also camp here in an RV as well.

Salt Creek also offers day use for picnicking, hiking via wooded trails, a trailhead to WDRN Striped Peak, and trails to a historic WWII bunker. 

Red Lion Hotel Port Angeles Harbor

Right along the harbor Red Lion has all of the amenities needed for an enjoyable trip to Port Angeles exploring the Olympic Peninsula. Amenities such as onsite parking, WiFi, an outdoor pool, and onsite dining! Pets are even allowed for a fee.

The great location is within walking distance of Kokopelli Grill and the Feiro Marine Life Center. 

Super 8 by Wyndham Port Angeles

Located on the outskirts of the downtown Port Angeles area, Super 8 Port Angeles is another great option! Especially if you’re partial to the Wyndham family of hotels and like to collect hotel rewards. 

The location is close enough to the action in Port Angeles without being in the thick of it. A short 5 min drive will bring you to the heart of Port Angeles to do some exploring. 

Port Angeles Inn

Located just blocks from the Port Angeles City Pier, Port Angeles Inn is in the middle of all the action in downtown Port Angeles. Offering harbor view rooms and convenient amenities such as a microwave, refrigerator, and coffee machine in the room makes this hotel the perfect base for your Olympic National Park adventures. 

Best Restaurants Port Angeles

Of course, where to eat in Port Angeles is one of my favorite things to plan and research before traveling somewhere! Let’s talk about the best places to eat in Port Angeles. Whether you’re spending the day around the city exploring or have worked up quite the appetite hiking in Olympic National Park there are many different great restaurants to have a quick bite or a nice sit down meal. 

Let’s review all of the great places we checked out while exploring Port Angeles.

Downriggers on the Water

This no-frills sports bar style American food focusing more on seafood options is the perfect place to snag a meal and beverage with a side of a beautiful view. 

Located right on the water in Port Angeles Downriggers is a great spot. 

Barhop Brewing & Artisan Pizza

Located on the Puget Sound waterfront parking was a little hard to come by so plan ahead for that! 

The beer was decent (honestly it really didn’t hold a candle to the beer options at Angeles Brewing Taproom) but the pizza was the best part of this spot! The tap list rotates at Barhop Brewing and they even provide the option to purchase pitchers of beer. (Beer pitchers are typically a steal during happy hour!)

Angeles Brewing Supplies & Taproom

This location is a quirky little local catch-all. What I mean by that is they offer beer on tap, bottles to go, and also all of your home brewing supplies. 

After spending a rainy day hiking in Olympic National Park it was a relaxing respite to have a few brews in the Angeles Brewing Taproom before having dinner. I love a great craft brew spot whether it’s a brewery or a local craft beer spot like this if I have time I’ll always pop in for a quick brew.

Hook & Line Pub

This pub is affiliated with Kokopeli Grill and is located right next door. The Hook & Line Pub is more for a casual meal with similar fresh seafood options but no frills. Offering mostly quick items such as chowders and fish and chips. 

Seasonally there is also an outdoor patio where you can enjoy your meal! 

Kokopelli Grill

This was our best meal in Port Angeles hands down! Kokopelli Grill was amazing. I seriously dream about the grilled oysters we had here. They were huge! 

This spot is open for dinner only from 3-10 PM and reservations are recommended! We didn’t have reservations and were lucky enough to snag a spot at the bar. 

Wine Tasting in Port Angeles

Washington ranks second in the United States for the production of wine. Even though we typically prefer craft beer during our travels, we appreciate really great wine as well! 

While in the Port Angeles area, there are several great tasting rooms to experience the great wine the area has to offer. Add wine tasting in Port Angeles to the fun things to do in WA repository! Check out one of the wineries and tasting rooms listed below.

Harbinger Winery

Located just off Highway 101 West of the downtown area of Port Angeles you’ll find Harbinger Winery and Tasting Room . A relaxing tasting room where flights are offered in a more rustic setting with wine barrels along the walls and really approachable and friendly staff. 

If you’re not into wine they do also offer beer. While you’re having a drink chocolates as well as cheese are available to pair with your drink of choice.

Olympic Cellars

Hours for this winery are a little more limited. Olympic Cellars tasting room and “sipping deck” closes at 5:30 PM making this winery a little more difficult to fit into your Port Angeles itinerary unless you have a bit of time over the weekend or on a weekday afternoon. 

Since we were still working remotely while in Port Angeles, it was hard to explore as much during “banking hours”.  (Our weekends and days off were more dedicated to Olympic National Park.)

Camaraderie Cellars

Out of the wineries we visited in Port Angeles, Camaraderie Cellars was our absolute favorite! The owners were actually there when we were and we hung out with them and stayed a little later. We really enjoyed their wine and it was completely unpretentious and approachable.

I mean, we showed up in hiking gear and weren’t scoffed at or turned away so that says something about their truly warm and welcoming atmosphere. 

Nearby Olympic National Park

The biggest attraction when in Port Angeles, WA is the nearby Olympic National Park. Visiting the National Parks across the state is one of the best things to do in WA (Washington). Washington has three National Parks, all distinctly different but incredibly beautiful. These parks are main points of interest in Washington state. 

You can definitely spend at least 3 days in Olympic National Park if you’re trying to stay closer to Port Angeles. 

However, Olympic National Park is a vast National Park enveloped by the Olympic National Forest with many different diverse landscapes. You can explore beaches and tidepools, rainforests, lakes, and mountains all within the Olympic Peninsula.

There are many hikes near Port Angeles, especially in the Lake Crescent area and near the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center. The Spruce Railroad Trail along Lake Crescent is definitely a favorite or the hike to the Sol Duc Falls! Yes, there are two airports in the Port Angeles area. William R Fairchild Airport (CLM) in Port Angeles and Sekiu Airport in Sekiu. Both of these airports are smaller, so you will likely need to have a layover at another large airport. Flying into Seattle or Tacoma will be the most cost-effective and then driving to Port Angeles. 

How far is it from Port Angeles to Forks, WA?

From Port Angeles, WA to Forks, WA is just over 56 miles. Forks is located west of Port Angeles along Highway 101. It takes a little over an hour to drive from Port Angeles to Forks. You can drive using your vehicle or rental car but there is also a bus that can take you to Forks from Port Angeles. 

How much rain does Port Angeles, WA get?

Rain falls throughout the year in Port Angeles. Spring and Fall typically have the most rainfall. The month that usually sees the least rainfall is July. However, it can still rain during this time it’s just not as common! Annually Port Angeles, WA usually gets about 26 inches of rain.

How cold does it get in Port Angeles, WA?

The average temperature during the cold season is 35 degrees Fahrenheit. The coldest time of year is typically November through March with December usually being the coldest month. During this timespan high temperatures can get up to 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Port Angeles can get snow although it doesn’t usually accumulate. 

Why is it called Port Angeles?

It was originally named by a Spanish explorer who named it “El Puerto de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles” because it provided respite for those making a crossing of the strait when it was stormy. Later on, the name was shortened to Porto de Los Angeles and translated to Port Angeles, Washington.

Port Angeles is a great place to stay while exploring Olympic National Park. But, beyond the National Park, there is a lot to do and see throughout Port Angeles to keep you busy!

Washington is an amazing state. We spent much of July exploring all three the National Parks such as Mount Rainier , North Cascades , and other areas including time in Anacortes , taking a boat tour to the nearby San Juan Islands, and Whidbey Island. Washington’s things to do definitely include exploring the diversity the Pacific Northwest has to offer!

Celebrate Indigenous Culture

Port Angeles is rich in Indigenous culture. Quite a few local tribes reside on reservations along the coast of the Olympic Peninsula, and numerous Port Angeles parks, museums, murals, cultural centers, and events pay homage both to tribal history and contemporary culture. The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe — who once had 33 villages in the area — resides just west of the city and is actively involved in the community. Every September, tribal members and community members gather for an annual salmon ceremony to honor and bless a new season of spawning fish. In downtown, you’ll find street signs written in the Klallam language.      

The Elwha Klallam Museum at the Carnegie operated by the tribe is a fantastic resource for those looking to learn more about the tribe’s culture and history. Located in the old Carnegie Library and open by appointment only, the museum features tribal exhibits, including the famous Tse-whit-zen Village — a pre-European contact village in the Klallam territory. Once located in the crook of Port Angeles Harbor, Tse-whit-zen flourished as a village for more than 2,700 years. Now one of the largest excavation sites of its kind, visitors can explore the deep history of Tse-whit-zen’s people.

One must-see structure is the House of Learning Longhouse at Peninsula Community College. This is the first longhouse in the nation to be constructed on a college campus. Six local tribes collaborated to design the building, which is set in a wooded area on sacred lands but open to all respectful visitors.

Native traditions are both a part of Port Angeles’ history and woven into its current culture and are highlighted through multiple events. The Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival celebrates the region’s diverse bounty and cultural traditions. The festival’s Native American program fosters an appreciation for the heritage of the native peoples and their traditions, and a portion of the proceeds go toward education about local habitats.

Explore the Mountains, Lakes, and Sea

Whether or not you consider yourself an outdoor enthusiast, it’s impossible not to be excited by all outdoor things to do in Port Angeles and nearby. The city is only about 20 miles from Hurricane Ridge , one of the most accessible mountain hiking spots within Olympic National Park. In the winter, the area boasts fantastic skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and more.

After trekking Hurricane Ridge, head out and explore a different part of Port Angeles’ wild and wonderful nature. The shimmering, crystal-clear Lake Crescent is a mere 30-minute drive from the city and is an iconic destination for anyone exploring the Pacific Northwest. This 624-foot-deep glacier-carved lake is surrounded by lush forest and rugged mountains.

The Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT) is a wonderful way to see the north end of the Olympic Peninsula.

The multi-use trail spans roughly 130 miles between Port Townsend and La Push, and it’s a premier destination for both hiking and (non-motorized) biking. With seven access points to the ODT in Port Angeles, drop in at any designated point along the trail and hike, bike, or horseback ride along sparkling lakes and towering forest stands.

Watch for wildlife in nearby Olympic National Park , which spans nearly 1 million acres and serves as a refuge for elk, black-tail deer, mountain goats, coyotes, and black bears, while 200 bird species attract many a bird enthusiast. Port Angeles Harbor and Hurricane Ridge are both locally renowned hot spots for bird watching.

Interested in seeing some sea life? The Feiro Marine Life Center offers up-close encounters with sea creatures found within 20 miles of Port Angeles and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. History buffs will have a special appreciation for the Port Angeles Underground Heritage Tour, which provides an in-depth look at the underground tunnels and old buildings constructed before city officials raised the city streets in 1914 (including an old movie theater and hidden brothel).

For an elevated evening out, Kokopelli Grill serves up memorable meals like crab-stuffed halibut, smoked salmon fettuccine, and blackened cod.
