Pluto Pod Travel Pillow: A First-Class Sleep Experience in Economy

A person sitting on a couch wearing a black Pluto Pod Travel Pillow with the eye mask pulled over their eyes.

I fly a lot. That’s a very chic thing to say, and I’m grateful that I can often visit far-flung loved ones and so many corners of the world.

However, the reality is probably less glamorous than what you’re imagining: I usually sit at the back of the plane, by the toilets, hunched over my laptop to meet a deadline, with nothing but a smashed PB&J to nourish me because I will not abide the indignity of paying $6 for a canister of Pringles.

The only respite from this winged hell would be to sleep. Not just to escape the barbarity of the experience but also to recover some of the hours lost to the time zone upon landing. But I’ve never been able to sleep on a flight.

I thought that sleep was a privilege reserved for the first-class passengers in their sequestered cabins, or the pharmaceutically aided, or those lucky freaks who somehow overcome the bright lights, the stiff seats, the crying infants, and the constant overhead announcements. So I took on this assignment with (respectful) skepticism. I agreed to try the Pluto Pod Travel Pillow , a slightly ridiculous-looking contraption that claims to help you sleep in non-ideal environments, such as airplanes.

I tested the travel pillow on an 11-ish-hour flight from Los Angeles to London (and back), which is miserable even in first class but downright inhumane in economy—the perfect laboratory. I could barely believe it, but the impossible happened: I slept nearly 6 hours straight.

Pluto Pod Travel Pillow

An all-in-one neck pillow, eye mask, and hoodie.

This light-blocking neck pillow looks like something an astronaut might wear, and we think it could keep us snoozing in coach even on an economy flight to the moon.

Buying Options

A supercharged neck pillow.

A person wearing a black Pluto Pod Travel Pillow with the eye mask pulled over their eyes.

At first glance, the Pluto Pod Travel Pillow seems … a bit much. It’s essentially a very thick neck pillow with a padded hood, plus a pull-down eye mask. Even rolled up into itself and snapped closed, it makes for a bulky burrito. (Actually, a good size comparison would be a party-size bag of Doritos.) One of our recommended travel pillows , the Trtl Pillow , takes up half as much space.

But what the Pod does with that space is nothing short of miraculous. The neck pillow part of the Pod, which secures in front with Velcro, sits flush against my chin, or the side of my cheek depending on how I tilt, cradling my head gently and securely while snoozing. And since the support surrounds your neck on both sides and the front, unlike the Trtl Pillow, it allows you to lean your head in any position while sleeping without having to adjust.

For those who have tiny heads, like I do, the height of the hood part is adjustable (you just clip the back portion to fold back some of the material). But even worn in its fully extended size, I felt comfortable; it just meant that instead of the pull-down screen covering only my eyes, it covered my whole face. Given that UV rays can permeate plane windows , I figure the more coverage, the better.

Did I feel a little stupid wearing this thing? Absolutely. But if you’re also feeling hesitant, I promise that once you have it on your head, you aren’t going to even see your seat neighbor, let alone worry about their sartorial judgment. The eye mask offers near-complete light blocking, and when it’s rolled up, the sides of the hood basically block out all peripheral vision, transporting you into your own little world.

But it’s bulky (and pricey)

The Pod is great, but even great things aren’t perfect. The first detraction is its bulkiness. We usually avoid recommending single-use travel gadgets like the Pod, because they’re hard to pack and (usually) used only during the flight. But since you can wear the Pod onto the plane around your neck, or else strap it around the handle of your carry-on, it’s a relatively easy-to-overcome hurdle.

For some, the Pod’s price will be the dealbreaker: At nearly $150, it’s certainly not cheap; in comparison, the Trtl Pillow plus the Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask, our top pick, would cost about $80 in total.

The last issue is one of vanity: It made my hair flat and a little staticky. But who cares? The uninterrupted sleep was worth it.

As I complete this piece, I am booking my usual, miserable red-eye flight to Ohio from Los Angeles for my grandmother’s birthday. In the past, I would have used this as evidence for why I’m the most devoted grandkid—traveling the farthest, suffering the most. But with my Pod in tow, I’m actually looking forward to the journey. Maybe I’ll use it to catch up on some beauty sleep.

There are things that users need to know about flying with an airplane leg rest and we lay out everything we learned from our experience.

Long-haul flights with children can be a daunting expedition. The thought of red-eye, or 5+ hour journeys through the air can invoke thoughts of bleary-eyed children fighting to stay awake through all hours of the night, much to the dismay of their travel companions and those around them. To help make these overnight plane journeys more bearable, enter the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow. The 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow is a way for children to fly legs up. It’s essentially an inflatable airplane footrest for children.

How Do You Fly Legs Up with the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow?

The First Class Kids Travel Pillow is a large, rectangular inflatable footrest with a quick-release valve. This travel footrest is designed to fit between an airplane seat and the seat in front to create a nearly seamless flat space. This allows children to more easily sleep on a plane. We are big proponents of helping kids find nap time on the road , so we were very anxious to try out this children’s travel product. The 1st Class Travel Pillow measures up to 45.5cm x 45.5cm x 30.5cm, however, it is designed to fit into nearly every seat space by simply varying the level of inflation.

The leg rest travel pillow is designed to match the width and height of airplane seats to create a comfortable, lay-flat bed for children. The main advantage of this inflatable footrest for kids is that it enables children on flights to stretch out within their own seating area rather than across multiple seats. And for anyone who has flown with children, especially on long flights, this concept seems heavenly!

Our Experience Using The First Class Kid Travel Pillow

The product was sent to us by local distributor Travel Tots . They provided us with two 1st Class Kid Travel Pillows for our upcoming trip to the Philippines . The products came in very compact packaging that was encouraging to see. I first unwrapped the packaging and tested the pillows out using a small camping air pump. The leg rest travel pillow inflated quickly and was very easy to adjust this way. Upon deflating the product, it, unfortunately, did not shrink to the same dimensions as the original packaging. This though was not unexpected, as what products ever collapse to factory size.

1st Flight with a Leg Rest Travel Pillow

For our flight to the Philippines, we flew Air Canada to Shanghai and then Philippine Airlines from Shanghai to Manila. This is where we learned about some of the politics of fly legs up type of products. When I approached the flight attendants on the 10-hour leg from Toronto to Shanghai about using the airplane footrest, I was told that Air Canada does not allow plane footrest products on their flights. This came as a surprise. It seems that there are quite a few airlines on both sides of the leg rest travel pillow debate.

After spending a day in Shanghai , we boarded our flight to Manila. We got lucky and were bumped up to first class, so for our flight to the Philippines, we did not have a chance to use the inflatable leg rest for flights.

2nd Flight with a Plane Footrest

Our next flight, however, was to Norway on Scandinavian Airlines, and, after contacting them in advance, we learned that they do allow the use of the First Class Kids pillow. In fact, when I was on the flight and preparing to set the children’s travel pillow up, the flight attendant was fascinated by the product and kept coming by to see how it was working.

Inflating the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

When I began setting up the airplane footrest, I quickly learned that not all airplanes are built the same. Travel Tots and the 1st Class Kids FAQ claims that the leg rest travel pillow can be inflated in minutes using the overhead ventilation system on planes. Our plane, however, did not have an overhead ventilation system. This meant that I would need to inflate each travel seat cushion by mouth.

This is when I learned that our travel pillows created a loud whistle when being blown up by mouth. I did my best to remain discreet on the plane, however with each mouthful of air, loud, whistling squeaks were emanating from our row of seats. Our neighbors were starting to notice. Luckily I started early, and not many people were sleeping yet. But if I were inflating the 1st Class Travel Pillow when others were sleeping, I probably would have stopped due to all the noise it created. (1st Class Kid Travel Pillow has addressed these issues and offered solutions in the comments section below)

The second issue I came across was that by the time I had inflated both pillows, I was light-headed and could have used a travel footrest of my own. And as far as I can tell, planes aren’t built for an adult-sized footrest for air travel.

Deflating the First Class Kids Travel Pillow

Where inflating this airplane footrest was a chore, deflating the travel leg rest was a breeze. This process involved a simple turn of a dial and most of the air escaped almost immediately. From there I only needed to tightly fold the travel footrest to force the rest of the air out before folding it up and placing it back in our carry on luggage. I was able to deflate both units and put them away in less time than it took me to inflate one of them.

The double airflow system of the First Class Kids Travel Pillow works very well. There is a large opening for deflation and a smaller, vent-controlled opening on top of it for inflating. The vent did a good job of allowing me to inflate the travel pillow by mouth without all of the air rushing back out each time I took a breath. The only issue I had with it was that when turning the smaller vent valve, the larger dial often turns as well-meaning that sometimes two hands or nimble fingers are necessary.

What We Love about the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

  • Very easy to fit the Leg Rest Travel Pillow to fill the space between seats.
  • It makes for a very comfortable travel experience for children.
  • Very easy to deflate and put away at the end of a flight.
  • Well designed inflation valve doesn’t require Olympic sized lungs.

Where We Think the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow Can Improve

  • It can cause an annoying loud whistle when inflating.
  • A bit bulky to travel with once out of the original packaging.
  • Only practical when the child is in a window seat or the middle seat of a middle row.

The First Class Kid Travel Pillow is available on Amazon. You can check the prices and availability here .

Tips For When You Fly Legs Up Using the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

  • Not all airlines allow an inflatable footrest. Make sure you contact the airlines ahead of time to ensure that the product is allowed. Refunds are not available for open products.
  • Bring a small manual hand pump in case there are no overhead vents on the aircraft.

Do We Recommend Using an Airplane Leg Rest Like the First Class Travel Pillow?

There is a big market for a portable footrest. With more and more families choosing adventure travel destinations, the use of a leg rest travel pillow for children is an often-appreciated luxury for long flights. There is no doubt that it helped our boys have an excellent sleep on their flight to Norway. There are definitely some design issues that we think could be improved with this product, however, if sleep is as valuable to you as it is for us, the benefits of a plane footrest is worth considering.

Very informative. We have the same pillow and plan the fly with SQ in premium economy.

From your pictures, it appears your kid has more leg room/has gap. Did the pillow stay still during the flight? Did you have to put something to hold the pillow in place?

Kevin Wagar

Because the 1st Class Travel Pillow is inflatable, it can conform to the available space between the seats. There was no gap beneath, rather, the gap might appear if the person in front reclines/straightens their seat. The pillow stayed perfectly in place for the entire flight with no need to adjust it.

Maybe it sounds crazy but I carry real pillows with me when traveling. They're small in size, but still, three of them take a lot of space. Perhaps it's time to go for inflatable ones :) As for leg rest travel pillows, I never even knew they existed, but I can see from your post that they can be really useful.

Monday 23rd of April 2018

Looks like an interesting product but I could see the hassles. One the noise you mentioned while blowing it up. Having to move it out of the way when not in use and the fact some airlines just don't allow it. Seems like it might be handy in some cases though.

Sunday 22nd of April 2018

I would love to have one of these of my own, they are a great idea! It must be difficult to design a one-size-fits-all product when there are so many different airlines and aircraft, although I'm surprised that some airlines don't allow them at all. I suppose for safety reasons they could only be used by the window or somewhere where people don't need to walk should there be an emergency.

Tuesday 17th of April 2018

Thank you for your review. We are always glad to receive feedback and see photos of passengers using our 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow and looking very comfortable.

We have heard of the whistling noise on some pillows! We have found that a small amount of petroleum jelly (or similar) fixes or reduces the noise. Try putting a small amount of petroleum jelly on around the black areas which are the seals of the valve. http://www.1stclasskid.com/faq/trouble-shooting/ Keep working the petroleum jelly around the black rubber parts (top & bottom) so it helps seal up around the edges. Leave inflated for a while and repeat until noise has improved.

Due to new plane interior designs that do not have overhead vents, we see the need to have a pump option so we are presently resourcing a pump that is ideal for our special valve. Regarding manual inflation, it is recommended to watch our manual inflation video before departure as it is best to open the deflate part of valve which exposes a large hole and start inflation this way by letting some air in before you start manually blowing. http://www.1stclasskid.com/manual-inflation-instructions/ OR You tube: https://youtu.be/z7qVt55aNvI Thanks to www.TravelTots.ca for supplying samples to you to trial and review. They are our exclusive distributor based in Ontario and have pillows readily available for our Canada customers.

Tracey@ 1stClassKid USA

Thanks very much for your thorough follow through Tracey. I look forward to seeing updates with the manual pump. I think an option like that would offer a serious benefit to traveling families.

Say no to middle seat mayhem and heads propped against plane windows; our pick of the best travel pillows is a one-way ticket to comfortable travel

Ladies and gentlemen, GQ Airlines welcomes you to our edit of the best travel pillows . We request your full attention as we demonstrate the value of packing a travel pillow on your next trip.

How we test the best travel pillows

We don’t mean to brag, but we consider ourselves experts in how to get quality sleep, regardless of where we’re opting to get some shut-eye. Sleeping on planes, buses and car journeys isn’t the most comfortable, so we endeavour to equip you with the best tools to help keep you ergonomically safe. Therefore, our testers have embarked on plenty of trips of all lengths to test out the quality of the top picks below, assessing the comfort, ease of use and portability to ensure we never recommend anything that we haven’t used ourselves.

When should you pack a travel pillow?

More like when  shouldn’t you pack a travel pillow? Part of the beauty of a travel pillow is its compactness, so there’s a strong case for travelling with one in your everyday  backpack . Need to grab an extra 30 minutes of shut-eye on your morning commute? Pack a travel pillow. Taking the passenger seat on a road trip? Pack a travel pillow. Have you got a long-haul flight booked for your summer holidays? You guessed it, make sure you get one to eliminate the dreaded travel neck pain.

When it comes to flying, where these comfy companions really come into their own, there’s no minimum flight time that negates the need to bring a travel pillow. In fact, the designs of short-haul air carriers tend to offer less comfortable positions and smaller seating spaces than larger vessels, so you could argue that there’s even more of a need to keep one in your carry-on for journeys under three hours.

It should go without saying that a travel pillow will make longer journeys all the more manageable, too, especially on overnight flights where onward travel plans depend on you being well-rested. Regardless of your trip, at least you won’t have to suffer through a rattled head on the window seat.

What types of travel pillows are available?

There are several types of travel pillows, with differences that factor into both their cost and the comfort they’ll provide. Here’s a rundown of the main four:

  • Memory foam travel pillows: Like their bed-bound brethren, memory foam filling pillows conform to the neck and head and are considered to be the most comfortable option with extra support to keep your head and neck in the right place.
  • Inflatable travel pillows : Admittedly, they are not always the comfiest option, but because they’re the most lightweight and compact, they’re the easiest to factor into your packing. You can also adjust the firmness by tweaking the inflation.
  • Microbead travel pillows : The tiny beads in these support pillows mould around the shape of your neck and head and make for a softer surface than memory foam, though at the expense of some support.
  • Wrap-around travel pillows : These pillows go beyond just the neck and head by also providing chin support, saving you the embarrassing jolt when you wake yourself up from a forward head nod.

This is far from the case with Sea to Summit’s Aeros premium traveller pillow, which is built to last with high-quality materials.

Going further than simply propping your head up, it has a soft, comfortable surface for resting on, while ergonomic bulbous side arms and a thin centre guarantee support in all the right places. Inflating and deflating is a faff-free undertaking thanks to a unique, multi-function valve, which also makes it easy to adjust the firmness to exactly how you like it.

Jiancrate Hooded Travel Pillow

Reasons to buy: Affordable | Hood for warmth/light blocking

You might be on the receiving end of a few odd looks if you pull this travel pillow’s built-in hood over your head and eyes, but who cares when it’s keeping you warm while blocking out harsh cabin light in the process?

With a washable outer cover and all manner of funky patterned designs to choose from, it’s as bold and vibrant, as it is versatile. It even comes with a pair of earbuds and a travel case for an added dash of convenience.

first class travel pillow

Travelrest Ultimate Travel Pillow

Reasons to buy: Innovative cross-body design | Excellent neck support

  • Material: Flocked PVC

This inflatable travel pillow does things a little differently by strapping to your seat, rather than around your neck. As a result, it’s one of the only travel pillows out there that provides full lateral support to the upper body, making it easier to relax and stay asleep for longer.

It’s especially handy when you’re allocated the middle seat on a flight, with its sash-like form providing more of a base to lean into. It’s on the larger side when inflated, but when not in use it takes up barely any room at all in your luggage.

first class travel pillow

Slip Travel Set

Reasons to buy: Luxurious silk | Includes accessories

  • Material: Silk cover

Giving your in-flight relaxation a first-class upgrade, Slip’s luxurious travel set goes beyond the memo by factoring in its market-leading silk eye and face masks for a peaceful travel experience that spans the senses. Made from high-quality silk, all three are soft to the touch, while the travel pillow employs the same hair and skin benefits as the enduringly popular  silk pillowcase , so you can really catch some beauty sleep on your travels.

Another major pro of silk travel pillows is that the fabric is naturally hypoallergenic and machine washable, so you can easily keep it fresh and clean throughout your travels.

first class travel pillow

Huzi Infinity Pillow

  • Material: Soft bamboo fabric

This rather unusual travel pillow is, in essence, a loop of soft, comforting, supportive goodness, letting you lie/rest on it any which way you see fit. From wrapping it around your neck to using it as a window/desk pillow, the only limit is your imagination (and the potentially curious glances from your fellow passengers)

Available in a variety of colours and with soft, luxurious bamboo and microfibre, the fact that it can be chucked in the washing machine for a freshen up is a welcome bonus.

Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow

Cotswold Outdoor

Reasons to buy: Easy to pack down into a small size | Lightweight

  • Material: 60 per cent recycled polyester

One of the biggest factors to look out for when investing in travel pillows is largely how easy they are to take with you. None of us want to be lugging around a giant pillow that doesn't fit in the bag with us on a flight, so why not explore Therm-a-Rest's compressible pillow that packs down incredibly small and tight while keeping its supportive properties.

Surprisingly comfortable and effortlessly portable, this is a dream for those frequent travellers who prioritise light packing.

first class travel pillow

Life Hall Travel Pillow

If, as with additional cabin luggage and allocated seating, you’re not willing to pay the premium for a high-end travel pillow, this Life Hall option is the best of the budget haul. While the memory foam isn’t quite as high-tech as others in this list, we can’t knock it for comfort, which is also bolstered by a raised lobe design for neck tilt support and a plush velour cover.

A rope at each end means that you can both tighten it to adjust for comfort and easily fasten it around the handle of your bag, while the choice of neutral and vibrant colourways means you can tailor your investment for business or pleasure.

How to Inflate the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

Manual inflation video.

1st Class Kid Travel Pillow should be treated like any other carry-on item.  DO NOT set up your pillow until you are at cruising level.

The 1st Class Kid Travel pillow has a combined inflation/deflation valve that must be used correctly to avoid difficulty when deflating. It is highly recommended that you practice these steps at home prior to using the 1stClassKid pillow on a flight. It is not complex but care must be taken as deflation of the pillow is virtually impossible unless you remove the deflation cover as described below.

The combination inflation/deflation valve is designed to be pushed into the pillow when inflated. This should be the default position of the valve when received. When deflated, the valve can be pushed out from behind to gain easier access to the inflation tube. Once inflated the valve can be pushed in or left out to allow easy access to the valve covers and body.

Inflation Tube

Inflation Instructions: The removable inflation/deflation valve has a one-way valve that keeps air from exiting the pillow while you are pausing to take a breath. While it is possible to inflate the pillow completely by mouth through the inflation valve, experience has proven that the best way to inflate the 1stClassKid Travel pillow is to follow these steps –

Start with the deflation valve removed (Fig 1). With the valve removed, there is a gaping hole that will allow air to easily enter (or exit) the pillow.

Next, pull out the corners of the pillow and form it into its shape. By doing this, it should be at least half full then hold up to your planes ventilation system above you (Fig 2)

Figure 2

If there are no forced air options screw in the inflation value (as per Fig 1) and complete inflation by mouth. Please take caution as you will be at altitude so take breaks when blowing manually.

The inflation valve has a one-way valve that keeps air from exiting the pillow while you are pausing to take a breath.

Another way to inflate is via a pump. We recommend the Tropo Pump because it is very lightweight & small in size.

Get amazing sleep on your trip or your money back!

Because you (and we!) know the travel part of traveling stinks—the seats hardly recline, the noisy hum of jet engines haunts your ears and the passenger next to you turns on the in-flight entertainment right as you’re trying to get some shuteye. It’s a draining flight that feels like it’ll go on forever. It’s not fun to reach your destination exhausted, so we buckled down to solve this problem for good by creating the ultimate travel pillow

We partnered with lauded design firm IDEO to create it and received a lot of valuable feedback from focus groups made up of flight attendants and frequent travelers to create the ultimate travel companion for you.

Typical neck pillows don’t offer adequate neck support. This results in waking up with aches, strains and a haze of exhaustion that makes you question if you slept at all. As a result, we based the POD’s neck pillow off of a neck brace, and then dialed it back down a bit for a cushiony, supportive feel for optimal sleep no matter your neck size and shape.

Conde Nast described the POD like being inside a mini sensory deprivation tank . This was the goal. Research has shown that we don’t typically get great sleep when traveling because we’re not in our own space / environment. Makes sense—you probably sleep better in the privacy of your own bedroom (on your Pluto Pillow ) than, let’s say, on a massive metal vehicle that hurls through the sky at 550 mph.

With the POD, you get to create your own privacy and capsule with the pillowy hood and built in eye mask. Look, you might look like an astronaut when you’re POD'ed up, but you’ll finally be able to get some sleep.

Typical travel pillows are bulky and cumbersome as they eat up valuable space in your carry-on. Not so with the POD! We spent a lot of time designing it to be able to be rolled up into a small burrito-shape that also works great as a back cushion for lumbar support or a mini pillow.

The POD only asks for a modest space on or in your luggage. You can either wrap the POD on your luggage handle or loosely around your neck. Lots of ways to save precious travel space!

After conducting a National Sleep Survey of over 2000 U.S. adults we found that 65% of people have difficulty sleeping while traveling by car, train or plane and more than 50% of respondents agreed that their ability to enjoy an adventure was compromised by jet lag and travel fatigue. We knew that after dedicating years on improving the pillow in the bedroom, it was time for us to try our hand at the pillow you take with you on trips – a.k.a. the travel pillow! We were tired of seeing the same horseshoe, U-shaped designs or tacky ones that made you look ridiculous. So, we got to work with one of the best design firms in the world, IDEO and listened to sleep researchers, flight attendants, and travelers to build the ultimate travel pillow. We hope you relax just as much on your journey as you do your destination!

Still have questions? Read all of our FAQs .

We've got two different ones for you! Open: 31” X 15” Closed: 12” X 6” X 4”

There are multiple ways to use this patent pending design: 1. You can use it as a normal neck pillow with the hood down

2. Pull the hood over for more privacy and pillowy support on the sides of your head

3. Pull the eye mask on for extra privacy and darkness to create your own little sleep capsule

4. Folded up to use as a pillow or back cushion

Glad you asked because YES! A number of our customers have shared that they weren't aware that the suede snaps (yes, real suede!) on the back of the hoodie not only serve as a function to store the POD, but that they also snap onto each other for a tighter, snugger fit (especially if you have a smaller head). This also makes the eye mask cover just the eyes instead of coming down around the face – though, the latter feels incredibly comfy :)

The compatibility of over-the-ear headphones with the Pluto POD Travel Pillow varies based on the size of both the headphones and your head. To help you gauge the fit, we recommend checking out this video . We're committed to ensuring you're completely satisfied with your purchase, so if the POD doesn't meet your expectations in terms of fit or any other aspect, you have the option to return it for a full refund under our 125-night trial .

Although the Pluto POD has a lightly padded hoodie and a built-in convertible eye mask, rest assured that it can be pushed back (akin to a conventional hoodie!) so that you can enjoy just the supportive, plushy neck pillow if preferred. That said, with the hoodie up and in use, our goal was to create a bit more warmth – your own little capsule and cocoon. When designing and developing the product, most travelers we interviewed actually shared that they tend to run cold on flights. "You can always adjust the cool a/c but not warmth," was a common take – so that was something we kept in mind (with the ability to still push the hoodie back for more temperature regulation). As the POD embarks on more adventures, we look forward to continue tweaking our designs.

With free shipping, your Pluto POD will arrive in about 7 business days. If you have a trip coming up before then, we have an expedited shipping option available at checkout. Safe and smooth travels!

The POD is meant to be used and is easy to care for. Everything touching outer surfaces is machine washer friendly. To wash the POD: Carefully unzip the neck support cushion and remove the foam (the foam will disintegrate in the wash!). Machine wash cold on a delicate cycle without other articles to prevent damage. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. When that's done, air dry flat and place the support foam back inside the cover.

We’re proud to offer the same great 125-night risk-free trial and 1 year warranty for the Pluto POD. Please make sure the POD is in its original condition and reach out to [email protected] for easy next steps. All PODs are inspected on return.

Sitting upright for hours on end can be incredibly uncomfortable, but a travel pillow can make your trip a lot more tolerable. Whether embarking on a red-eye flight or taking the train, the best travel pillows will be comfy, supportive, and portable.

We tested 24 travel pillows based on traits like comfort, durability, portability, and quality. We narrowed down the best options while using the accessory for road trips, long-haul flights, and train rides. Our top pick for the best travel pillow overall is Cabeau The Neck's Evolution S3. We love that this pillow folded down into its own, compact carrying case and comes with a washable cover to keep it fresh between trips. We also found the best pillow choices for travelers who like a softer or firmer pillow along with styles that are perfect for middle seats and budget-conscious travelers, too.

Best Overall

Cabeau tne s3 travel pillow.

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.8 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

The seat strap system keeps the pillow in place and prevents painful neck cramps.

It can feel stiff at first and takes some getting used to.

This soft and supportive travel pillow is the perfect accessory for long trips, whether you're in the car or in the air. The pillow itself can attach to any headrest with adjustable straps to prevent your head from sagging or falling into uncomfortable positions while sleeping. There's also an adjustable chin strap for added comfort and security. The pillow's exterior fabric is soft and cozy, yet breathable so you don't feel too hot or constricted although it can take some time to find your perfect position.

We also love that the pillow case is machine washable. We tested this pillow on a long international trip where it really got tossed around on planes, trains, and buses, so it felt great to wash the cover at the end of the trip, making it good as new. Despite its fairly large size, the pillow is also quite portable as it rolls up into a compact carrying case that can attach to a bag's exterior or slip into larger backpacks and totes.

Best Overall, Runner-up

Cushion lab ergonomic travel neck pillow.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

The pillow has an asymmetrical design that allows travelers to adjust the amount of support needed.

It can have a snug fit.

The Cushion Lab Ergonomic Travel Neck Pillow can make your trip much more comfortable, whether in the middle seat of a plane or a car. With an ergonomic design, one side of the pillow is larger than the other to support the chin if your head tilts while sleeping, and the back has a cushion that is contoured to keep the head in an upright position. During testing, the neck pillow provided a comfortable rest for the chin, and we didn’t feel too hot while wearing it. Although the cushion fits snugly around the neck, it didn’t take long to get used to it, and we could nap comfortably during a train and car ride. The buckled strap was easy to adjust, and we liked having the ability to spin the pillow around to use the asymmetrical sides and back to find the most comfortable position for sleeping in the window and middle seats. With a soft, recycled polyester exterior and Cushion Lab’s extra-dense memory foam, the quality of the travel pillow is luxurious and sturdy, and it folds into a small ball to fit inside a carrying bag that can clip onto a backpack or a suitcase.

Best budget, cloudz microbead travel neck pillow.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 4 /5

It molds to the shape of your neck to prevent bobbing.

The cover can't be removed and washed.

The Cloudz Microbead Travel Neck Pillow is a no-frills option that offers generous neck support for a budget-friendly price. It is filled with tiny microbeads that quickly mold to the shape of your neck and prevent your head from bobbing around while sleeping. We appreciated its lightweight but sturdy feel, and that there were no signs of damage after using the neck pillow or when clipping it onto a suitcase to transport. Although the cover can’t be removed, we noted that the fabric is easy to touch up with instructions to spot clean the surface as necessary. Cozy and breathable, the travel pillow did a solid job of regulating temperature and keeping the neck warm during cold flights and cool during hot flights.

The Details: Polyester, microbeads | No portable case | Machine washable

Best Splurge

Ostrich pillow go neck pillow.

The pillow has an asymmetrical design that can accommodate neck, chin, and head support preferences.

It might warm your neck if you run hot while sleeping.

The Ostrich Pillow Go Neck Pillow feels like sleeping on a cloud. This travel pillow provided the perfect amount of neck support and comfort, allowing us to get more rest on a flight than usual. The plush memory foam filling and asymmetric design can be easily adjusted to support the neck, chin, or head with the taller or shorter sides. The materials appear high-quality and luxurious, and it rolls up to fit in a compact drawstring sack. The pillow holds its shape despite being in the bag for long periods, which leads us to believe that it will hold up well with prolonged use. The pillow cover is removable and can be machine washed, but we air dried it to ensure it didn’t shrink (and had no issues putting it back on the pillow). A must-have for those with higher budgets, this pillow allowed for better sleep and more comfort on flights.

Best Cooling

Cabeau evolution cool pillow.

  • Quality 4.5 /5

The mesh air vents make the pillow breathable.

It’s made of firm memory foam.

The Cabeau Evolution Cool Pillow is a great pick for travelers that get warm quickly. The pillow is designed to prevent heat from building up as you wear it as mesh vents in between two layers of cushiony memory foam filter in the air. We liked the breathability feature and moisture-wicking fabric, and said we didn’t feel overheated while using it on an airplane or road trip. While it took a moment to get situated, once the pillow was in the most comfortable position, it was extremely supportive and firm without feeling too hard. We especially liked the portability of the already lightweight pillow (thanks to its durable-feeling carrying case), and the mesh pocket for storing small accessories. This pillow quickly unfolds to its original shape despite being rolled up and going in and out of the compact case as well.

The Details: Memory foam | Portable case | Machine washable

Best Sustainable

Therm-a-rest compressible pillow.

  • Portability 4 /5

It’s made of recycled and upcycled materials that are comfortable and breathable.

It doesn’t offer neck support like a regular travel pillow.

If you’re not a fan of the typical U-shaped travel pillow, the Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow is a great alternative. It resembles the rectangular style of a traditional pillow, and it compresses down to be easily transported whether you’re flying or camping. The recycled polyester fabric is light and breathable, and the foam filling — made from extra polyurethane foam left over after producing REI’s sleeping pads — provides a soft cushion for your head. We also loved how durable it is, especially for various uses like camping, flying, or taking a nap at home. While the pillow doesn’t come with a carrying bag, it has a toggle strap to compress it into a smaller size and a built-in cover that you fold the pillow into for protection while traveling.

The Details: Recycled polyester, polyurethane foam fill | No portable case | Machine washable

Best for Window Seats

J-pillow chin-supporting neck pillow.

It’s easy and intuitive to use for resting your chin and head.

It could be more supportive when you’re leaning against a window.

The J-Pillow Chin-supporting Neck Pillow has a J-shape that wraps around the neck to support the chin and the front, back, and one side of the head. Despite the different design than a typical U-shaped travel pillow, it is easy to use and fits securely while sleeping or resting during travels. The pillow comes with a compact case that can be attached to a piece of luggage to make traveling with it effortless. After being folded up in the carrying case for some time, the J-shape didn’t falter, and remained supportive and soft. We think the J-Pillow is ideal for any type of traveler since it's very portable and lightweight.

Travel + Leisure / Jennifer May

Aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow

  • Durability 4.5 /5

It’s supportive without feeling too stiff.

This would be best for travelers who know they prefer a firm travel pillow.

We love the comfortable and supportive Aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow for travelers that like a firmer neck pillow. The buckle strap adjusts accordingly to fit around your neck, and offers 360-degree support on the chin, jaw, and back. We loved how you can lean back in the car or plane, and the back of the neck doesn't fall backward. In addition to having exceptional support, the Aeris travel pillow folds into a small ball and easily fits into the circular carrying case that can clip onto a backpack or suitcase without being a noticeable nuisance. The holder also has a frontal slip pocket for storing the earplugs and eye mask that are included with the travel pillow. After a trip, the carrying case can be unzipped and machine washed, although we recommend air drying it to prevent any possibility of shrinkage.

Best Side Support

Cabeau evolution s3 travel pillow.

  • Durability 4 /5

This pillow is soft and durable.

The suede-like outer material has a tendency to pick up lint.

This travel pillow was designed to keep your head and neck supported for even the longest of flights. Not only is the semicircular pillow adjustable, so you can get the shape perfect for you, it also features and adjustable seat strap to prevent your head from dropping while you rest. Right out of the box, we loved the high-quality of the memory foam, which makes it supportive and soft, and the cover material feels great against the skin. It gives users a great balance of softness and support. To keep your pillow protected and prevent any risk that it will end up getting dragged across the airport floor, this also comes with a compact carrying case that compresses down to fit into carry-on luggage.

The Details: Polyester, microsuede, memory foam | Portable case | Machine- washable

Gingerlily Silk Travel Pillow

  • Portability 3 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

To protect your hair and skin throughout your travels, a silk pillow is the way to go.

It's 12 x 16 inches, so make sure you have plenty of room to pack it.

For those who love sleeping on silk pillowcases at home, this mini version for travel is an absolute must. Yes, it can be pricey to buy silk travel accessories , but it's also expensive to ruin a blowout and have to find a salon on vacation (and there's no price to be put on fresh, clean skin). This silk pillow is smaller than a standard pillow at 12 inches wide and 16 inches long, but can still be used in bed in a pinch and is perfect for trains, planes, and cars — just make sure you have the space in your carry-on bag. After using this pillow for multiple long trips, it shows no signs of loose stitches, fraying, or pilling. Rather, the pillow feels like it will last without ever going limp or flat.

The Details: Mulberry silk, cotton sateen, polyester

Other Travel Pillows We Liked

While we were able to narrow down the travel pillows for our best list, there were some that almost made the cut but didn’t due to a few weaknesses noted by our testers.

Hest Pillow : This standard pillow is on the softer side yet still provides support and comfort while laying on it, but the fabric is slightly itchy, and it’s bulky to carry around, even when compressed.

Gingerlily Silk Travel Neck Pillow : We love that this pillow is high-quality and made with luxurious material, but it doesn't come with a carrying case, which we think you would need to keep this pillow protected.

Cabeau Evolution Classic Travel Neck Pillow : While the memory foam is the perfect balance of firm and soft, we found this pillow to be just a bit too bulky for frequent travel.

Travel + Leisure / Daniela Galvez

We sent out 24 travel pillows to our testing experts to use during their upcoming trips. To thoughtfully curate this list, we researched popular options to fit a variety of comfort preferences, including pillows made of memory foam and microbeads, and tested different shapes, too.

On a scale of one to five, our testers rated the pillows based on comfort, quality, durability, and portability. The pillows with the best comfort scores met or exceeded our expectations for special features, including cooling, firmness, softness, or other claims by the manufacturer. Our testers used the pillows for several hours at a time, if not longer, to see how comfy they were while sleeping, reading, or watching a movie while traveling. We asked our testers to note if they were able to sleep with the pillow on, if it caused any neck pain or discomfort, and how warm or cool the pillow felt around the neck. To check for quality and durability, our testers examined the build of the pillow to feel how well-made it appeared. After using the pillows during trips, they judged durability based on their functionality after several uses. The pillows with the highest score for portability were able to compress down into carrying bags that allow travelers to transport the pillow with exceptional ease. The best pillows also kept their shape after being tucked away into a case and always sprang back into their original form with no signs of damage.

Tips for Buying a Travel Pillow

Prioritize neck support.

When it comes to sleeping in planes, trains, or cars, you should focus on your neck and head support. When your head drops during sleep, it restricts your breathing and can leave you with a sore neck or even a headache. Your travel pillow should be supportive enough that your neck stays securely upright without feeling as though you're being squeezed.

Portability is key

Whether you pack light or over-pack, a travel pillow that compacts into a small carrying case is ideal for bringing along on trips. Of course, some travel pillows don’t compress, but they should still be easy to clip onto a suitcase and not bump into too many things if you’re traversing an airport or train station.

Consider the filling material

Travelers who like a more firm pillow should opt for a memory foam filling that can offer more support than an inflatable alternative. Microbead pillows can be just as supportive as memory foam ones, but they tend to be on the softer side and more suited to travelers that like a little less structure while sleeping.

Generally, washing instructions will be included with the purchase of a travel pillow or on its tag. Removable covers can usually go through a machine wash, but many of our testers opted to air dry the cover to prevent any shrinkage that could happen in a dryer. If a pillow doesn’t have a removable cover, you can spot clean the pillow by using a wet cloth or rag dipped into soapy water.

Most standard travel pillows have a semicircular shape that wraps around the neck to support the neck, head, and chin. These U-shaped pillows often have memory foam or microbead filling, but there are also inflatable neck pillows. In addition, standard pillows make great travel pillows, and plenty of rectangular-styled pillows compress down for better portability. Finally, while traditional pillows might be better suited for a traveler in the window seat, there are unique J-shaped travel pillows that are perfect for supporting the neck and head of someone sitting in the middle or aisle seat.

Kids Travel Pillow: A Review for 1st Class Kid Brand

Sharing is caring!

Most kid’s travel pillows you can find are U-shaped pillows on the market. A neck pillow is just one thing that could help your child’s comfort, but another travel pillow can help you and your child have a comfortable flight.

You can still opt to get the memory foam neck pillows on the market, but you can add the 1st Class Kid travel pillow to help with their dangling feet on a tall plane seat.

This article is my review of the 1st Class Kid brand travel pillow and how it can provide more comfort for your child while traveling so they keep still and do not slide and move forward out of their sleep.

You’ll find how this travel pillow can be a buddy to your typical kids travel neck pillow and an eye mask to give your kid a comfortable flight.

Travel With a 3-Year-Old

We’ve traveled a lot with our 3-year-old since he’s been born. We have worn him in a carrier as a lap infant. He’s traveled in both his infant car seat and his toddler seat. He has even flown without anything in his seat. When I heard about 1st Class Kid travel pillow, I knew I needed to check it out. (Contains affiliate links.)

My husband and I try to be courteous travelers. We know it’s our choice to travel with our kids, and we aim to set ourselves up for success. I bring busy bags, tons of snacks, headphones and an iPad.

However, the problem we consistently run into is our son kicking the seat in front of us. He doesn’t even realize he’s doing it. Our son is used to moving around, and some part of him is always moving.

Thankfully, that’s where the 1st Class Kid travel pillow comes in.

1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

The 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow is an inflatable pillow that easily fits in a carry-on bag. When deflated, it took up minimal space in my backpack. It fits on the floor of an airplane in between the passenger seats.

Interestingly, it’s designed so young children can spread out to sleep rather than lie across other accompanying passengers or on the floor. This helps them sit on a plane in an ergonomic position.

1st Class Travel Pillow

With his headphones, movie and 1st Class Kids Travel Pillow, our preschooler was set up for a successful flight.

We tested the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow on our flights from Seattle to Madrid. This was our son’s first international fight in over a year, and we weren’t sure if he’d be able to sleep comfortably as he’d grown.

Our flight left at 7 pm, and we decided to re-create our son’s bed as much as possible. We were unable to use the air vents to inflate the pillow, so my husband blew it up manually. We put it in front of our son’s seat and brought out his special blanket.

However, it took a while for him to fall asleep. He was very excited about our trip and being in an airplane. But, eventually, he stretched out on the pillow and slept.

We left during the afternoon for our flight home, and we didn’t expect our son to sleep much. But we had a long flight from Paris to Chicago and figured we’d try out the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow again. It was even more helpful this time!

Our son was able to lounge comfortably while he watched movies. Finally, he quickly fell asleep for a really long nap.

1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

The 1st Class Kids Travel Pillow made it impossible for our son to kick the seat in front of him.

What my husband and I appreciated the most about the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow is that it prevented our 3-year-old from kicking the seat in front of him. His legs rested on the pillow, and he didn’t have the opportunity to swing. My husband and I didn’t worry about our son bothering the passenger in front of him!

Additionally, I rested my feet on it at one point during our flight. I angled myself in my seat, and my son and I rested our feet on the pillow. I’ve used my carry-on backpack as a footrest in the past with minimal success. The 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow surprised me with how comfortable it was. I also didn’t worry about crushing anything in my carry-on.

1st Class Kids Travel Pillow

The 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow is easily packed because it folds up.

I would definitely recommend the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow to families with small children who are heading on a long flight. This is a perfect travel gift idea for your friends who love to travel with their children.

Additionally, it takes up minimal space in a carry-on bag and is easy to inflate. It prevented our son from kicking the seat in front of him. He was also able to sleep well on our international flights.

You can make this more fun by buying a washable cover with a fun and cute animal or travel design.

We will bring this on any flight long enough to watch a movie and will always add this to our travel packing list . It’s so convenient for any long trip, and we’ll add this with the rest of our car accessories for road trips .

This looks like it would be so handy for our trips. I am going to have to look into getting one!

This seems like a really great idea! Its handy that it doesn't take up too much space and I bet the passengers in front of you appreciated the no kicking of the seat!

Amber Nelson

We haven't flown with the entire family yet..no kids. But, this looks like it could be great for the kiddos.

City Pair Program (CPP)

The OMB-designated Best-in-Class City Pair Program procures and manages discounted air passenger transportation services for federal government travelers. At its inception in 1980 this service covered only 11 markets, and now covers over 13,000 markets. Today, CPP offers four different contract fares.

Fare finder

  • Search for contract fares

Note: All fares are listed one-way and are valid in either direction. Disclaimer - taxes and fees may apply to the final price

Taxes and fees may apply to the final price

Your agency’s authorized travel management system will show the final price, excluding baggage fees. Commercial baggage fees can be found on the Airline information page.

Domestic fares include all existing Federal, State, and local taxes, as well as airport maintenance fees and other administrative fees. Domestic fares do not include fees such as passenger facility charges, segment fees, and passenger security service fees.

International

International fares do not include taxes and fees, but include fuel surcharge fees.

Note for international fares: City codes, such as Washington (WAS), are used for international routes.

Federal travelers should use their authorized travel management system when booking airfare.

  • Defense Travel System for the Department of Defense.

If these services are not fully implemented, travelers should use these links:

Contract Awards CSV

Previous fiscal year contract awards can be found on the Fiscal documents and information page . To read more about the contract award highlights, please see our Award highlights .

Instructions for the FY24 CSV file

All fares are listed one-way and are valid in either direction. In the CSV file, Origin and Destination are in alphabetical order regardless of travel direction. The Origin is the airport code (domestic travel) or city code (international travel) that comes first alphabetically and the Destination is the airport or city code that comes second alphabetically.

For example, you are traveling from Washington, DC to London, England. You know the city codes are WAS and LON respectively. The city code LON comes first alphabetically and WAS comes second alphabetically. To find the contract fares, you filter:

First Class Sites Await in Colorful Moscow

Opulently first class architecture at the kremlin citadel.

There’s so much to see at the Kremlin complex that you could spend every minute there once your first class flight land s. Its mixture of ornate and somber architecture reflects the country’s various historical periods. Here, you’ll find the shining, gold-capped domes of Cathedral of the Dormition and the somber-looking State Kremlin Palace. There are four cathedrals in the complex, including the Cathedral of the Annunciation, which is now a fascinating museum. The Cathedral of the Archangel, the burial site of several medieval leaders, is also within the citadel area. Many of the Kremlin Citadel walls and towers erected in the late 15th century still surround the complex and offer hours of captivating exploration. In spite of the tremendous number of Kremlin squares, cathedrals, churches, towers, palaces and museums open to the public, it’s only a third of the entire citadel.

Experience the Heart of Moscow Society in First Class Red Square

Across from the Kremlin’s Spasskaya Tower is one of Moscow’s most recognizable structures, the colorfully enticing St. Basil’s Cathedral. The cathedral is now a museum, and its colorfully patterned onion domes remind us of the country’s vibrant past. The cathedral museum should be just one stop on your visit to historic Red Square. The square has been the gathering place for generations of Muscovites, from Medieval peddlers and Soviet-era soldiers to present-day concert-goers. Lenin’s Mausoleum is on the square, as are the treasured Kazan Cathedral and the popular GUM department store. The square also bears the tribute statue to Minin and Pozharsky, the leaders of the 1612 militia that warded off Polish invaders.

Fallen Monument Park Is a Unique Way To See First Class Soviet Statues

Fallen Monument Park is actually Muzeon Park. It became a de facto repository of the many Lenin and Stalin statues that populated the region’s Communist countries during the Cold War. The collection of Soviet-era statues grew throughout the 1990s. As time progressed, artists began placing statues commemorating victims of the Soviet Union in the park as well. There’s also a special section of the park honoring the valiant soldiers of World War II, or the Great Patriotic War. The park presents an unexpected and unusual glimpse into the country’s cultural and artistic sensibilities. It’s also a nice chance to stroll through the park-like setting and enjoy the city’s ambiance.

Get a First Class Lesson in Russian History in Kolomenskoye

There’s a wealth of Russian history and architecture to be found in Kolomenskoye, with artifacts dating back to the Stone Age. The 630-acre site encompasses the remains of the 2,500-year-old Dyakovo Settlement and other important historic sites. In the 14th and 18th centuries, the area was a muster site to important Russian armies, and it became a summer home for the tsars and their families. It was also an instrumental site during the “Time of Troubles.” Today, the village is home to the 16th-century white stone Church of the Ascension, one of the first churches in the country to depart from Byzantine architecture. It also houses St. George the Victorious Bell Tower, the Hunting Pavilion and a 17th-century water tower. In all, there are 17 “architectural monuments” here, many of which were part of the 16th-century tsars’ estates. Four historic wooden structures were moved from other areas of the country to the Kolomenskoye site.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
