Viktor hovland leads by a touchdown in pursuit of $18 million payday at tour championship, share this article.

tour championship 3rd round scores

ATLANTA — It’s Viktor Hovland’s world right now; we’re just living in it.

The 25-year-old Norwegian shot a 4-under 66 at East Lake Golf in Atlanta to improve to 20-under par and open a six-stroke lead at the Tour Championship, the third and final leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Hovland carded back-to-back birdies at Nos. 6 and 7, the latter a 12-foot putt. He held a four-stroke advantage at 18 under when play was suspended due to lightning in the area.

“We thought last Sunday was good,” CBS’s Frank Nobilo said. “This is every bit as good.”

Hovland came back out when play resumed and made back-to-back birdies at Nos. 12 and 13. He made a bogey at 14, but drilled a 6-iron to 15 feet at the water-guarded 212-yard par-3 15th.

“The pin was on the right which made the green feel a little bigger for me,” he said. “It was a perfect 6-iron.”

While a touchdown seems like it should be an insurmountable edge — it is the largest 54-hole lead lost in Tour history — Scottie Scheffler blew a lead of the same amount last year in trying to win the $18 million winner’s prize. That’s over 192 million Krone for Hovland.

“That’s a lot of cash,” he said. “But we’re here to win tournaments. There’s a lot of hungry players behind me who can shoot 61 tomorrow. I’ve got to be ready.”

Schauffele earns spot in final group

If it’s late August at East Lake, Xander Schauffele must be making birdies at the Tour Championship.

Schauffele is an ATM at the playoff finale, qualifying for his seventh consecutive year and has never finished worse that T-7. He has the most top-5 finishes without winning the FedEx Cup title, though he did win the Tour Championship in 2017 before Starting Strokes was implemented.

Schauffele started the week T-11 and has steadily climbed the leaderboard, earning a spot in the final group alongside Hovland. After rounds of 67-64, Schauffele made three birdies in his first seven holes, but made three bogeys that canceled out two more birdies on the way to the clubhouse and a round of 2-under 68. It marked his 24 th under-par score in 27 career rounds at East Lake Golf Club. Expect another one on Sunday, but it better be a low one if Scahuffele’s going to catch the leader.

“I know what I need to do,” Schauffele said. “I need to go out and try and put as much pressure on him tomorrow on that front nine as I can and hope for the best.”

Morikawa and Bradley share third

Morikawa, who was the only player in the 30-man field to play bogey-free the first two rounds, made a double bogey at the fifth after his lob shot landed in a greenside bunker and he failed to get it up and down. He dropped two more shots with bogeys at Nos. 10 and 11 and waited until No. 16 to make his lone birdie of the day.

After shooting a tournament record 61-64 for the first 36 holes, Morikawa posted 3-over 73 to drop to 13 under.

Bradley is tied for third with Morikawa. He made four birdies and four bogeys in an up-and-down round of 70. Bradley made a deuce at the difficult par-3 15th for the third straight day.

Scheffler and Rahm falter

2023 Tour Championship

Scheffler and Jon Rahm are tied going into the final round of the final event of the FedEx Cup. But after dueling for the FedEx Cup lead for most of the season, they find themselves nine off the pace set by Hovland, who left them in the dust. It didn’t help that the leading candidates for Player of the Year both fired a dud on “Moving Day.”

Rahm hit in the water left off the tee on No. 8 and made double bogey, added a bogey at 11 and made just two birdies en route to shooting 71.

Scheffler didn’t make a birdie until 18 and shot 3-over 73. He took three putts at 7, missing from just over a foot and even after one-putting the final four holes, he ranks 25 th out of the 30-man field in Strokes Gained: Putting.

The heat is on

2023 Tour Championship

When Rickie Fowler finished his round, he signed autographs, sweat dripping down his face, as if it was a balmy 70 degrees, not 99 degrees with a heat index of 105 degrees. But Fowler knew where he was headed once he finished signing.

“I’ve got to get in a cold plunge,” he said.

Eventually, the searing heat won out and play was suspended at 5:28 p.m. ET for one hour and 15 minutes due to lightning in the area. (It was termed a code red.) The storm provided some relief for the rest of the play, which finished just before 8:30 p.m.

Sunday’s temperature is expected to drop down to 97, and the players will take the two degree dip  but when it’s that hot, it’s just uncomfortable.

DP World Tour Championship: Matt Wallace leads Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland after birdie burst

Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland are one shot behind Matt Wallace and Jeff Winther is two back; defending champion Jon Rahm within five of the lead and Race to Dubai champion Rory McIlroy eight behind; watch the final round live on Sunday from 6.30am on Sky Sports Golf

Matt Wallace

Matt Wallace produced a historic back-nine birdie charge to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

Wallace came into the weekend seven strokes back but birdied every hole of his back nine during a remarkable Saturday at Jumeirah Golf Estates, where a 12-under 60 lifted him to 16 under and ahead of a congested leaderboard.

The nine consecutive birdies - 12 in total - and the back-nine 27 all equalled historic bests on the DP World Tour, although will not go into the record books because of preferred lies being used during the third round.

Round three highlights

Wallace goes wild in Dubai

Wallace took advantage of the par-five second and holed from 10 feet to pick up a shot at the sixth, then responded to missing a seven-foot birdie chance at the next to convert from 12 feet at the eighth and reach the turn in 33.

The four-time DP World Tour winner started his incredible burst of scoring when he rolled in from 30 feet at the 10th and 20 feet at the par-four next, before adding further birdies from six feet at the 12th and close range at the 13th to close within two of the lead.

Wallace two-putted from 40 feet at the 14th and fired his approaches to tap-in range on the next two holes, with a six-foot birdie at the 17th moving him top of the leaderboard and raising the possibility of a '59 round'.

The Englishman found the greenside bunker with his approach into the par-five last but was inches away from holing out for eagle, although a tap-in birdie matched the DP World Tour bests for most birdies made in one round and most consecutive birdies.

DP World Tour: Latest schedule and results

"What a day, an amazing day," Wallace said. "I just tried my hardest to get myself back in the tournament. I played great there and at the end there I didn't even think that it was for a 59, honestly. I think it helped me a little bit, but I just played really nicely down the stretch."

Rory McIlroy 70 foot birdie

Fleetwood jumped two clear earlier in the day after five birdies in his opening seven holes, with the former Race to Dubai champion cancelling out a three-putt bogey at the 12th with a monster eagle at the par-five 14th.

The Englishman retained a share of the lead with a birdie at the 16th but bogeyed the next and failed to take advantage of the par-five last, where Hovland holed from seven feet to close a blemish-free 66 and also get within one of the lead.

Winther's eight-under 64 included a hole-out eagle from the 10th fairway and another eagle at the last, while Hojgaard was within one of the lead until closing a two-under 70 with back-to-back bogeys and falling back alongside Ferguson - who fired a bogey-free 64 - on 13 under.

Defending champion Jon Rahm is five behind after a five-under 67, while Race to Dubai champion Rory McIlroy moved back inside the top 20 on the leaderboard by finding a birdie-eagle finish to close a seven-under 65.

2024 Masters live stream, watch online: TV coverage, channel, Tiger Woods in Round 3, broadcast schedule

Watch every single shot from the biggest names in golf throughout round 3 at the 2024 masters.

tiger.jpg

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The third day of action at the 2024 Masters is going to be a significant one as Moving Day meets Augusta National with the leaderboard undoubtedly shifting ahead of the tournament's final 18 holes. Two days of pristine golf at the nation's best course remain with the best hoping to finish not just in the money but as high up the leaderboard as possible.

The grounds are filled to capacity with patrons, and they were undoubtedly keen to see how Tiger Woods continues to play after he created Masters history on Friday by making his 24th consecutive cut , a tournament record. Woods also hit 22 of 36 fairways through his first two rounds, his best such mark since 1999.

Though he was on the edge of contention entering Saturday, after shooting his highest nine-hole total in Masters history going 6 over on the first nine, Tiger is now firmly out of contention with some questioning whether he will finish 72 holes at all. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy -- after an extended session on the range Friday night -- shot one of the better rounds of Saturday's early wave. Neither he nor reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm are a threat to those atop the leaderboard.

Far more likely to find the winner's circle is Scottie Scheffler, the 2022 green jacket winner seeking to win his second in three years. Scheffler entered as an overwhelming favorite and sits +100 to win the tournament entering Saturday's third round. He is one of three men tied atop the leaderboard with Max Homa the author of Friday's best performance and Bryson DeChambeau holding steady looking for his second major championship and first since 2020. Who pulls ahead between that trio remains to be seen, but you can follow  2024 Masters leaderboard live updates throughout Round 3  right here and find out.

There is so much to pay attention to this week that it can be overwhelming at times. No worries: We have you covered. On Saturday alone, you can watch the entire first rounds from Woods, McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama and young sensation Ludvig Åberg.

Masters 2024: Prize money payouts at Augusta National

I t says something about what it means to compete in the Masters that players aren’t thinking twice about the fact they have no idea what the prize money payouts were this week at Augusta National before teeing off in the opening round. Club officials don’t officially announce the purse until after a cut is made in the tournament. Frankly, the chance to win a green jacket, a spot in the Champions Locker Room and a lifetime exemption into the major are enough reward to make it worth everybody’s while.

That said, the uncertainty was ended on Saturday when the club announced this year’s prize money payout. For the third straight year, the overall purse at the Masters increased, growing to $20 million with Sunday's runaway winner, Scottie Scheffler, earning $3.6 million. This brings it in line with the $20 million purses offered in the PGA Tour’s signature events as well as the $20 million paydays being played for individually on the LIV Golf circuit.

RELATED: A brief history of the Masters prize money payout

This year’s prize payout is a bump from the $18 million the Masters offered in 2023, and up from $15 million in 2022. Amazingly, too, it was only three years ago that the overall purse was just $12 million. That’s a 66-percent increase in just three years’ time.

The Masters now matches the U.S. Open as the top paying men’s major championship, with the USGA also paying $20 million in prize money during last year’s championship at LACC. The PGA Championship bumped up its purse last year at Oak Hill to $17.5 million and the Open Championship paid $16.5 million at Royal Liverpool in 2023. All the majors are currently dwarfed by the Players Championship, which paid out $25 million in March with winner Scottie Scheffler earning $4.5 million.

Below is how much will be paid out to everybody who made the cut this week at Augusta National.

2023 Tour Championship leaderboard: Viktor Hovland well ahead of field as hot streak continues at East Lake

Hovland has a six-stroke lead on his nearest challenger as he nears a $18 million payday sunday in atlanta.

What was once close tournament quickly turned into a blowout Saturday at the 2023 Tour Championship. Entering the day tied atop the leaderboard with Collin Morikawa and two strokes ahead of Scottie Scheffler, it took no time for Viktor Hovland to claim the solo lead. By the time the weather-delayed round concluded, Hovland (-20) opened a healthy six-shot lead on the field as he goes for his second consecutive victory, first Tour Championship and first FedEx Cup.

The Norwegian shot 66 on Saturday to move six ahead of Xander Schauffele (-14) and seven in front of Collin Morikawa (-13). Hovland was his usual solid self, ball-striking his way around a golf course at East Lake Golf Club playing a shot more difficult on Saturday than it did over the first two days of this tournament. He was steady on the back nine as everyone around him started falling off the pace, and now he's in the driver's seat for a comically large $18 million payout on Sunday afternoon.

Hovland is attempting to become just the fourth golfer to win the BMW Championship and Tour Championship in succession. If he's successful, he will cash an astounding $21.6 million in a two-week span.

Let's take a closer look at Hovland's third round, his path to victory and what it's going to take from his peers to keep him from raising a trophy for a second straight Sunday.

1. Viktor Hovland (-20):  He's hardly been perfect this week, but that has not been necessary given his starting position of 8 under in the staggered start on the leaderboard for this FedEx Cup Playoffs finale. Hovland has used that advantage to his benefit even though he has not necessarily played his best golf across the first 54 holes. He's putted it fine, but his real work has been done off the tee and from tee to green where he's top five in the field in both categories.

This all shows up in the way his score has been constructed. Hovland is just not making bogeys. He has just three of them through three rounds because his striking has been so solid. This is what it looks like when you effectively give a few strokes putting at the beginning of the week to a great ball-striker. More often than not, one of them is going to take advantage of this -- especially when those around them are not taking advantage -- and this year Hovland is the one doing so.

2. Xander Schauffele (-14) 3. Collin Morikawa (-13) 4. Keegan Bradley (-12) 5. Jon Rahm (-11)

The obvious question: Are there really  other contenders? As noted, Hovland leads everyone not named Schauffele by seven or more, which realistically means that Schauffele is the only player who has even a remote shot of catching him. Morikawa fell back on Saturday with one of the worst rounds of the day. His insane 15-under pace over the first two rounds was always going to be difficult to maintain.

The reality here is that if Hovland shoots anything under par on Sunday, it's pretty much over. Let's say the leader shoots 69, the players directly behind him would have to shoot 62 or 61 to win the tournament. That's incredibly unlikely, and even if Hovland shoots even par or 1 over, it's likely he wins this event.

There's a reason he's -1100 to hold the trophy right now.

However, one thing to keep in mind is what happened last year with Rory McIlroy and Scheffler. The latter led the former by six going into the last day, but McIlroy played seven better than Scheffler, who stumbled to a 73. Schauffele plays this golf course even better than McIlroy, and while it's unlikely that Hovland stumbles to a 73 like Scheffler did, Schauffele is the one to watch out for over the final 18 holes.

At stake Sunday

If Hovland hangs on Sunday, he will have won $21.6 million over the last eight days. To contextualize that figure, it's more than Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will make this year and also more than David Duval earned in his entire career.

Here are the payouts for the top 10 in the field (the other 20 will all bring home at least $500,000):

  • 1st: $18,000,000
  • 2nd: $6,500,000
  • 3rd: $5,000,000
  • 4th: $4,000,000
  • 5th: $3,000,000
  • 6th: $2,500,000
  • 7th: $2,000,000
  • 8th: $1,500,00
  • 9th: $1,250,000
  • 10th: $1,000,000

Struggling Scheffler

The No. 1 player in the world looks exhausted. He didn't make a birdie in his round and nearly finished last in putting, approach play, tee to green play and overall play. His 3-over score was one better than the worst of the day (Jason Day, +4). Given the circumstances, one could pretty easily argue that it was his worst round of golf of the year.

So, what's up with that? I go back to this quote from last week at the BMW Championship.

"There's a lot more energy that gets taken away from the course [when I'm in contention]," he said. "At this point in the year, I'm definitely very tired, and I'm looking forward to next week being done. But at the same time, I didn't work this hard and for this long to just cash in the last two weeks and not really do my best."

He certainly looks like he's beyond the "very tired" portion of his season, which is what you'd expect from somebody who has been having one of the great ball-hitting seasons ever but cannot win a tournament because he's struggling with his putter and is on Round 11 of 12 of insanely hot, muggy playoff golf.

Scheffler narrowly avoided his first birdie-free round in 15 months with a four at the last at East Lake. Unfortunately, it was his only circle of the day, and now he's likely too far back of Hovland (nine shots) to do anything but play for second.

Rick Gehman and Greg DuCharme break down the third round of the Tour Championship. Everyone is chasing Viktor Hovland and his big lead with 18 holes left in the PGA Tour season. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Struggling Scottie Scheffler

The No. 1 player in the world looks pretty worn out right now. He just hit another ball in the water on the par-3 15th (which he tripled earlier this week) and had to make a long putt for bogey to move to 4 over on the day.

Round 3 resumes

Players are back on the course, and Viktor Hovland has opened up a six-stroke lead on everyone in the field outside of Xander Schauffele. Will be fascinating to see how he closes out this round.

Play Suspended in Round 3

There is apparently a storm brewing in Atlanta, and the horn has blown and play has been suspended in the third round of the Tour Championship.

Chevron Championship

Defending champion Lilia Vu withdraws from the Chevron Championship before she tees off

2149001539

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — The Chevron Championship's defending champion didn't even get to the first tee Thursday. Lilia Vu withdrew from the Chevron ahead of her 1:10 p.m. tee time with back spasms. Vu's playoff opponent at last year’s Chevron, Angel Yin, also withdrew after her first round today. The LPGA explained that after a first round six over 78, Yin will not continue playing due to her foot injury. “I am so sorry to have to withdraw from the Chevron Championship, as I was really looking forward to defending my first major title,” Vu wrote. “I have been dealing with a back injury for a while now. Some days are better than others, and today was unforutantely not a good day. During my normal warm-up routine, I had severe discomfort in my back and I felt that I could not compete up to my standards and made the decision to withdraw from the tournament ahead of my tee time. I am planning to return home to see my doctors immediately to determine the best appropriate next steps.”

Today marks the third withdrawal of Vu's injury-marred 2024 campaign. Vu, 26, suffered from back spasms while in Southeast Asia, exiting the HSBC Women's World Championship after the third round, and the Blue Bay LPGA after her first 18.

The Southern California native returned at the Fir Hills Se Ri Pak Championship, where she lost her spot as the No. 1 player in the Rolex Women's World Rankings when Nelly Korda won her second consecutive tournament. Vu's last start on the LPGA was at the Ford Championship three weeks ago, when she also played in all four rounds, including an opening 64, for a T-21 finish.

"The only goal today was to hit the ball solid," Vu said. "It's been kind of difficult the past couple weeks just playing through pain and trying to make contact with the golf ball."

The two-time major champion met with the media Tuesday at Carlton Woods, explaining that she felt close to full strength. Vu had started working out last week and felt fine, with nightly stretching helping her recover. Feeling comfortable exercising instead of just doing physical therapy was a significant improvement from the previous months, when Vu would sometimes cry on the range because her back wouldn't hold up.

"I definitely feel a lot better than I did at PV and Phoenix," Vu said. "I would say we're basically 95 percent there. If I stay healthy this week I think I'll be able to do what I need to do."

The early exit ends the first major title defense of her career.

Yin, meanwhile, made the second start of her 2024 campaign this week after taking the start of the season off due to breaking her foot. The 25-year-old returned to the LPGA at the T-Mobile LPGA Match Play in Las Vegas, making it through the three-round stroke play cut to the top 8 for match play before losing to Nelly Korda in the quarterfinals at Shadow Creek.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Third-round tee times have been released for the Masters. Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau will play in Saturday’s final group at 2:45 p.m. ET.

Scottie Scheffler, who’s tied for the lead with Homa and DeChambeau, will tee off 10 minutes earlier alongside Nicolai Højgaard, the Dane who was the youngest player in last year’s Ryder Cup and closed 2023 by winning the DP World Tour Championship. Scheffler is seeking his second Masters win in the last three years. He recently won his second consecutive PLAYERS Championship.

Cameron Davis, a member of the 2022 International Presidents Cup Team, will tee off alongside Collin Morikawa in the third-to-last group. They’ll be preceded by Ludvig Åberg and Matthieu Pavon, the Frenchman who won this year’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Other notable groups include:

  • Tiger Woods, Tyrrell Hatton (12:45 p.m. Eastern). The five-time Masters champion Woods has set the record with his 24th consecutive made cut at Augusta National, and he now seeks a climb up the leaderboard for a chance to match Jack Nicklaus' record six green jackets come Sunday. Woods trails the lead by seven strokes into Saturday.
  • Patrick Cantlay, Neal Shipley (a) (12:15 p.m.) Ohio State's Shipley has secured low amateur honors as the only of five amateurs in the field to make the cut. He'll play alongside world No. 7 Cantlay, who is still seeking his first major title. Cantlay is eight off the lead, with Shipley nine back.
  • Akshay Bhatia, Shane Lowry (12:05 p.m.) Fresh off a victory at last week's Valero Texas Open that secured his first Masters berth, Bhatia kept the good times rolling with rounds of 72-75 to make the cut with three strokes to spare. He'll play alongside a popular Irishman in Lowry, also nine off the lead into the weekend.
  • Sahith Theegala, Phil Mickelson (11:25 a.m.). Perhaps two of golf's most creative shotmakers and California natives, both enter the weekend at 4-over 146, trailing the lead by 10 strokes. Theegala finished ninth last year in his Masters debut; Mickelson is a three-time Masters champion.
  • Joaquin Niemann, Min Woo Lee (11:05 a.m.). The effervescent Lee has quickly become one of the game's more colorful characters, and he carded 74-74 to make the cut despite a broken finger that he suffered in a gym accident less than two weeks ago. Lee and Niemann both trail the lead by 10 into Saturday.
  • Rory McIlroy, Camilo Villegas (10:55 a.m.). Many eyes will be on McIlroy early Saturday, which he'll begin 10 strokes back, as he seeks to make a heroic run toward his first green jacket, which would complete the career Grand Slam. He'll play alongside a popular Colombian in Villegas, who won last fall's Butterfield Bermuda Championship to earn his first Masters berth since 2015.
