What to do in Lafayette

15 Fun Things To Do In & Around Lafayette, Louisiana

North America , Travel | November 12, 2020

This post contains affiliate links, which means I may make a small commission if you buy anything mentioned here. It doesn't cost you anything extra.

For my first ever trip to the southern United States, I visited Lafayette in Louisiana on a press trip to experience Cajun country’s Mardi Gras with Lafayette Travel . Between parades, we discovered some of the most fun things to do in Lafayette.

Lafayette is the hub city of Louisiana’s Cajun & Creole Country on the American southern Gulf Coast. A cocktail of European, Caribbean and African influences bestow a unique charm on the destination.

Lafayette is like nowhere I’ve ever been before and it made me want to see more of the south  – when travel is back to whatever shade of normal we can salvage, that is.

Upon touching down in Louisiana, I quickly learned that life in Lafayette revolves around the three holy pillars: food, community and live music.

Swamp tours are among the best things to do in Lafayette

Almost more Caribbean in its culture and aesthetic than it is southern , Lafayette is surrounded by swamps and bayous.

It’s known as the happiest city in America, and my first taste of its famous southern hospitality from grinning locals had this British gal sold on that idea.

Fun things to do in Lafayette and surrounding areas

Here’s the lowdown on what to do in Lafayette: the hub city and beyond.

Watch my Youtube video about Cajun Mardi Gras in Lafayette

1. Start the day with a Zydeco breakfast at Buck and Johnny’s

Buck and Johnny's Zydeco Brunch in Lafayette

Zydeco is a style of African American music that originated in the south of Louisiana. Its ability to get your toes tapping is remarkable! I developed a taste for it when I spent my first morning in the States joining locals two-stepping to a live band at this packed bar near Lafayette.

The Zydeco Brunch happens every Saturday during the breakfast service. The food is typically southern.

Order Beignets and Troubled Water to start, followed by a Buck and Jonny’s specialty such as Cajun Swamp Rice or the Don’t Mess with My Tasso.

They have 15 dollar Cajun Bloody Marys, if you’re looking to kick brunch up a notch before you hit the dance floor.

I absolutely loved the atmosphere at B&J’s. It was just so different to anything I’d seen back home! A breakfast party there has got to be one of the best things to do in Breaux Bridge, which is a city near Lafayette.

If you want to keep going after the music stops, move on to Tante Marie down the street for a jam session then wind up back at B&J’s in the afternoon.

2. Learn about Lafayette’s past at Vermillionville

Vermillionville in Lafayette

Vermillionville is a Cajun and Creole living history museum named after the area’s original title. It’s spread over 23 acres so you can easily spend a whole day there, and there’s an on-site restaurant with reasonable prices.

You can take a self-guided tour around the original period buildings and the costumed historians working there will tell you stories about life in 19th-century Acadania.

They have a lot of fascinating information to share, and this is a great way to immerse yourself in the history of Lafayette.

If you go to Vermillionville on a Sunday you can catch live Zydeco music in one of the buildings.

Check tour prices on Viator

3. See the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist

Lafayette Cathedral

Originally named l’Église St-Jean du Vermilion, this beautiful cathedral is one of Lafayette’s top attractions.

The red and white brick building stands proudly above the cityscape, so you can’t miss it while you’re walking around downtown Lafayette.

The cathedral is beautifully maintained. Some of the features of note are the stained glass from Munich which depicts the life of the patron, oil paintings of Christ and the Apostles, and a grand Casavant Frères organ.

4. Dance the night away at Rock’n’Bowl

Lafayette Rock n' Bowl

If you’re looking for an off-the-wall date night in Lafayette, head down to Rock’n’Bowl . I felt like I was in a movie!

Rock’n’Bowl is a ten-pin bowling alley with a difference: there’s a huge dance floor and a stage with live music in the centre of the lanes!

While the younger clientele aims for a strike, the rest of the crowd takes over the dance floor in pairs.

As a British girl, I can’t even imagine my male relatives anywhere near a dance floor so I felt quite emotional watching this wholesome fun play out! The fact that everyone dances in Lafayette made me fall a little bit in love with the place.

5. Join locals at a Boucherie

Boucherie near Lafayette

Attending a boucherie is one of the more unique experiences to have in South Louisiana. It’s a Cajun tradition that dates back to a time when butchering a hog was a necessary part of feeding the community, so everyone in the area mucked in.

We attended a boucherie at Lakeview Beach Park in Eunice and (thankfully) arrived after the slaughter. I’m glad I didn’t witness that bit, but I did enjoy the overall experience for its community focus.

While the pig was divided among the local chefs housed under a gazebo outside, the rest of the community got the party going in the big barn.

Everyone, awkward teenaged couples and creaky-hipped grandparents included, made for the dance floor. Drinks flowed and soon, heaped plates of pork were passed around. Every part of that pig was devoured!

It’s worth checking if your visit to South Louisiana coincides with a boucherie. The Lundi Gras Boucherie is a Cajun Mardi Gras tradition but there are events throughout the year.

6. Find live music – any night of the week

Live music in Lafayette LA

Lafayette is the self-proclaimed Free Music Capital of the World and there’s live Cajun, Creole and Zydeco music playing at bars all over the city from Wednesday to Sunday.

You can of course find live performances on a Monday or Tuesday night too, but you might have to venture outside of town. I personally loved the singers at Agave , a Mexican place on Vermillion Street.

Almost every bar we went to had a live band playing, and I learned a lot about South Louisiana’s musical past during our trip.

7. Follow the Boudin Trail

Boudin is a tourist attraction in Lafayette LA

I had never even heard of Boudin before my trip to Lafayette but I think I ate it every day while I was there – and every single ‘link’ was different to the last.

Boudin is a type of sausage that’s a little like black pudding. The Cajun version typically contains pork and rice, and the spicy flavour really packs a punch.

One of the more unique tourist attractions in Lafayette is the Boudin Trail . Can you work your way around some of the best boudin in the city? It’s quite a challenge!

8. Wander around the Hilliard Art Museum

Hilliard, Lafayette

If the weather isn’t on your side, this is one of the best things to do in Lafayette when it rains. The Hilliard Art Museum ‘s permanent collection consists of 18th through 21st century European, Asian and American art works.

There were some inspiring exhibitions when I visited, including Vitus Shell’s ‘Bout It, ‘Bout It, The Political Power Of Just Being’.

If you’re lost for things to do in Lafayette with kids, the museum has ‘Toddler Time’ that should keep them entertained.

The museum is closed Sundays and Mondays, so plan your visit accordingly. Adult entry is $5.

9. Visit a microbrewery

Gift ideas for men who love travel

I developed a taste for the New Orleans raspberry beer Purple Haze during my time in Louisiana, but there are craft breweries local to Lafayette that you can support.

Parish Brewing in Broussard produce special brews like Ghost in the Machine and Opus Vert. You can take a tour of their taproom on Saturdays and they have Trivia Night on Thursdays.

Bayou Teche Brewing in St. Martin Parish is around 25 minutes in a car from Lafayette. It’s a family-run brewery and they host events throughout the year.

Try their signature brews like Biere Pale Ale, Ragin’ Cajun Ale & Lager, and Swamp Thing IPA. Cheers!

10. Shop in Downtown Lafayette

Where to shop in Lafayette LA

I spent my last morning in Lafayette trawling the shops in the Downtown area, stopping for a caffeine hit at Rêve Coffee Roasters , which has a surprisingly hipster edge that seems incongruent with the city itself.

I was pleased to find some hidden gems on the high street (are they called high streets in America?), including Genterie , which feels like a homegrown Urban Outfitters, and indie music store Lagniappe Records . Take home some ‘Swamp Pop’ on new or used vinyl as a souvenir of your trip.

If you’re shopping for gifts, Parish Ink is a good choice. They print t-shirts focused on their South Louisiana roots that express the cultural nuances of the area.

I keep wishing I’d bought the ‘Mais Bruh’ shirt – or how about one stating, ‘I wanna be loved bayou’?

You can also catch Lafayette Farmers Market at Moncus Park on Saturdays.

11. Slurp a drive-thru daiquri

Lafayette's drive-thru daiquiri

Yes, you read that right. Lafayette is home to more than one daiquiri bar offering a drive-thru service. It blew my mind!

The menus are extensive, offering everything from White Russian flavour to strawberry daiquiris. Like you need any more reasons to visit?

Not gonna lie, this was one of my most memorable activities in Lafayette.

Just don’t put the straw in the slot until you’ve finished driving (because that’s how they keep things legal). Only in Louisiana!

12. Attend one of Lafayette’s festivals

Lafayette Mardi Gras

It’s worth timing your trip to Lafayette to coincide with one of the various festivals taking place there throughout the year.

The  Festival International de Louisiane is the largest with entertainment on seven stages, but there are also festivals dedicated entirely to shrimp, boudin and Zydeco across the cultural calendar.

Of course, Mardi Gras is celebrated at the beginning of the year and the Cajun version is a little different to anywhere else’s.

You can read my blog post about what makes Cajun Mardi Gras different to find out more.

13. Visit the Tabasco factory

Tabasco factory in Louisiana

Located around 20 miles south of Lafayette, the Tabasco factory on Avery Island is a must-visit while you’re in Lafayette.

There’s a museum where you can learn all about the history of the McIlhenny family, who invented the hot sauce in 1868 and still run the company today.

I know what you’re thinking – does hot sauce have that much of a story to tell? But the museum is surprisingly engaging and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

You can see the iconic sauce being made and get samples in the tasting room. They have a wacky souvenir shop and restaurant on the surprisingly attractive premises. Try the Tabasco ice cream!

After your Tabasco factory visit, you can also explore Jungle Gardens , a 170-acre bird sanctuary and botanical garden founded by Edward McIlhenny. He did a lot for conservation of the local ecosystem.

14. Spot alligators on a swamp tour

Swamp tour from Lafayette

One of the more adventurous things to do near Lafayette is a trip out into the swampy landscape. We got to enjoy a tour of Atchafalaya Basin Landing on an airboat.

Wrapped up in the blankets they hand out before you board, I found myself wondering why I would need layers on such a warm day. I quickly learned why.

The air chilled as we glided noisily over the murky water barely making a ripple, and I was glad of the extra insulation.

We were lucky enough to see a couple of alligators as well as some turtles and birds during our tour.

Our guide had been conducting tours of the basin for 30 years and seemed to know the swamp like the back of his hand, which blew my mind.

15. Browse Breaux Bridge’s antique stores

Antique shops Breaux Bridge LA

There are a number of quirky shops in Downtown Breaux Bridge , so if you don’t fancy carrying on in the bars after breakfast at Buck and Johnny’s, you can still kill some time in town perusing their wares.

Check out the 17,000 square-foot marketplace that is Lagniappe Antiques , Au Vieux Paris Antiques and the Breaux Bridge Antique Mall on Bridge Street. I could have spent hours searching for treasures there.

Where to stay in lafayette.

We stayed at the DoubleTree Hilton which is always a safe bet. Got to love those freshly baked cookies they hand out at check-in!

One of the most unique places to stay in Lafayette is Crawfish Haven/Mrs. Rose’s Bed and Breakfast . You can stay on a crawfish farm and harvest your own crawfish, see how it is cooked, then eat them.

How to get to Lafayette

I flew from London to Dallas, and from there it’s a short flight to the tiny Lafayette International Airport.

If you hire a car in New Orleans , the drive to Lafayette takes between two and three hours depending on traffic.

Best time of year to visit Lafayette

My visit was in February for Mardi Gras. The weather was a little unpredictable but we mostly got lucky, with only one afternoon of heavy rain.

The best time to visit Lafayette is in Spring or Fall, so you avoid the stifling heat of summer. I quickly learned that it gets much colder when it rains in Lafayette!

How many days to spend in Lafayette

I’d say three to four days should be enough to get around the main attractions in Lafayette. Of course, if you’re charmed by the local nightlife and love to dance, you might want to stay longer.

I hope you’ve found my guide to what to in Lafayette helpful for planning your trip!

Check out my Mardi Gras Instagram story highlight on my profile and follow me on Facebook and Twitter for more travel updates. I also have a Youtube channel .

As mentioned at the beginning of this post, I visited Lafayette for a press trip before travel restrictions were introduced. All views are my own and this content is not sponsored.

Things to do in Tela

Things to do in Tela

There Are Many Different Things to do in Tela: Enjoy the Beach, Visit the Garifuna Villages, Enjoy Nature in the National Parks…

Following is a list of the most outstanding things to do in Tela. Do keep in mind that your local tour operators in Tela can arrange special tailor made tours and activities for you.

Punta Sal National Park

Things to do in Tela

The most popular of all things to do in Tela! Punta Sal offers a unique experience, which combines a marine adventure with a brief hike in the tropical rain forests of Central America. Visit Cocalito Beach, arguable the most beautiful white sand beach in continental Central America, snorkel in some well preserved reefs, and simply relax in the sun. The boat trip out to Punta Sal might even surprise you with a welcome commission commandeered by pod of dolphins that will escort your boat part of the way! The best alternative for this trip is to hire it through one of the local tour operators: Garifuna Tours , Eco di Mare Tours and Tela Dive Center .

[themify_hr color=”light-gray” width=”1px” ]

Punta Izopo National Park

Punta Izopo National Park

Punta Izopo National Park   is located on the Eastern tip of the Bay of Tela. Access is via de Garifuna Village of Triunfo de La Cruz, reputedly the one of the oldest communities in Honduras, and certainly the first where the Garifuna people landed in continental Central America. Although the park is relatively small, the experience of paddling through mangrove canals teeming with life will certainly provide for a thrilling experience. A visit to this park requires the use of kayaks, so you will need to purchase a tour with either Garifuna Tours or Eco di Mare Tours .

Lancetilla Botanical Gardens

Lancetilla Botanical Gardens

Are you into plants? Lancetilla Botanical Garden offers a variety of different collections of plants, including exotic fruit trees, tropical palms, and many different ornamental flowers. You may even have the chance to taste some of these fruits, and buy some fruit conserves and jellies made by a group of local ladies, to take with you some of the tropical flavors of Honduras. A visit to the Lancetilla Gardens is one of the more popular things to in Tela. Make sure you hire a local guide if you visit on your own.

Walking tour of Tela.

Although Tela does not have many old buildings to speak of, there are different very iconic sites, and you can easily take a walking tour of the area, visiting both old and new Tela. For a complete description of a good walking tour, visit the official Visit Atlantida web page.

Garifuna Villages in the Bay of Tela

Things to do in Tela

There are many different Garifuna Villages within the Bay of Tela. They are all easily accessible if you have a car. If you do not have a car, consider hiring a cab or contact one of the local tour operators for a tour. There is no doubt that the most picturesque, and probably most interesting of the Garifuna Villages in the area is Miami. However in addition you will find Tornabe and San Juan on the Western side of Tela. La Ensenada and Triunfo de la Cruz are on the Eastern side of Tela.

Until very recently, nobody even imagined that diving could be included in a list of things to do in Tela! In order to have some good quality diving, you need a reef close by… Well it turns out that there is a great reef just off the coast of Tela that is in extremely healthy conditions! The Capiro Reef has been acclaimed as the best preserved reef off the coast of Central America’s Caribbean shoreline. (This of course excludes the Bay Islands of Honduras, and the Corn Islands of Nicaragua , which offer outstanding diving conditions). Tela Dive Center offers a full service PADI dive shop, including certification courses, diving expeditions, equipment rental and sales. They can also offer diving trips to the Bay Island of Utila , which is not far away.

Tela offers two golf courses, so if you are into golfing, this could be a real treat for you! Indura offers a Par 72 18 hole Gary Player Championship course, and Telamar Resort has a 9 hole course which originally belonged to the Tela Railroad Company. Now how is that for a true adventure playing golf in an authentic Banana Republic Golf course? Now you know that Golf is certainly on the list of things to do in Tela!

Los Micos Lagoon and a visit to Los Olingos

Tela National Parks

Los Micos Lagoon is an extensive lagoon system that is part of the Jeannette Kawas National Park . The lagoon is separated from the ocean by a narrow sandbar that provides just enough space for the most authentic of all Garifuna Villages in the World: Miami. This place is a far cry from Miami, Florida! It is truly close to an idyllic paradise, but with few services. The beaches are quite spectacular, and there are a few spots where you can have a meal.

Los Olingos is a beautiful eco property located on the mountain side of Los Micos Lagoon. For a great day experience, and better yet, for an overnight experience arrange for a stay at Los Olingos. Your stay will include a boat trip from Miami, and across the mangrove canals through the lagoon. A visit to los Olingos is one of my very personal favorite things to do in Tela.

Enjoy the Beach

Things to do in Tela

Tela is best known for its beaches, and this is what most people come here for. So chances are that if you decided on Tela, you came here because of the beaches. Our best advice is: enjoy the beaches! If you are not staying in a beachfront hotel with direct access to the beaches, there are several different alternatives that you work on.

The beach in front of the pedestrian street in Tela is always a great alternative. This beach offers a variety of restaurants and bars within the pedestrian street. Simply choose the type of food you would like and enjoy the street side seating here. As with any public beach in the World, keep an eye on your belongings and bring only what you need with you. Leave your valuables, personal documents and the rest of your belongings in your hotel.

The new Playa Equipada, or equipped beach refers to the beach area located in front of the old Tela Railroad Company accounting building. This beach is also adjacent to the Municipal dock. The beach now has a variety of services and is regularly patrolled by security and protected with cameras. This means you can enjoy the beach safely!

A last alternative is located on the beach adjacent to Telamar Resort, towards the west. This beach is also provides diverse services, such as a toilette’s, boardwalks and little thatched roof champas to provide a refuge from the sun.

Farther out towards the Garifuna communities located west of Tela you will find other beachfront areas that you can enjoy. As with anywhere in the World, avoid a completely solitary beach. In the unlikely happening of someone trying to mug you, you will be completely on your own. The Garifuna Communities are very safe, but do not try to get out to them walking or on a bicycle.

Tela City Tour

Tela is a small and friendly community, where everything is close by and walking is a great way to get around.

The ideal Tela City Tour is a walking tour of the city, and of course, the perfect place to start your Tela City Tour is at the central park. The park is known as the Plaza Cabanas, in honor of Jose Trinidad Cabanas, one of the founding fathers of Honduras. At the park you will find a small gazebo, as well as a monument in honor of Jose Trinidad Cabanas and a bust of General Francisco Morazan, one of the founding fathers of Honduras. Another site of interest is in the adjacent city hall, where at the foot of the flag poles that faces the park you can see a bell and a two old canons, that were salvaged from an old shipwrecked Spanish galleon that lies in the bottom of the bay of Tela.

To continue with our Tela City Tour, we will take a left for one block and then a right on the first street. You are about one block away from a bridge over the Lancetilla River. Go over the bridge, enjoy the view towards the beach and see the boats waiting for tourists to take them to Punta. On the opposite side of the river you find a pleasant boulevard with the beach directly on your right. To your left, opposite of the beach, you will find the old Tela Railroad Company accounting building, the oldest standing building in Tela. The building has been renovated. It is a beautiful example of the typical banana republic architecture that shaped Atlantida 100 years ago.

At the end of the boulevard, instead of turning left to follow the street, turn right into the beach. From here, you can see the old Tela Municipal Dock. The dock was built by the Tela Railroad Company and used to export the fruit produced by them to the USA. The dock is still in use today. Much of the fuel imported to Honduras comes into the country through this dock. The storage facilities are next to the CA13 highway that leads from Tela to San Pedro Sula.

If you continue on along the beach you will soon be walking in front of the Telamar Beach Resort which is the old residential complex where the executives and selected employees of the Tela Railroad Company used to live. Here you will see some old wooden homes, as well as several buildings, that will then be replaced by the modern buildings that house the resorts hotel rooms. At the far end of the Telamar Resort complex you will see a paved street, which actually wraps around the complex. Walk down this street towards the first street, as if you are going around the perimeter of Telamar. On the right you will pass by one of the nicest small hotels in town, Hotel Playa Bonita , which is not on the beach, but offers nice spacious rooms at a fair price.

As you continue down the street, you will notice several old homes on the right side of the street. Most are reminiscent of the old Banana Era architecture. On the far end of the homes you will see a large three story building; this was where the Tela Railroad Company store was located. Back in the early days of the company, there was no official money circulating in the country. Thus, the fruit company’s would issue tokens in payment to their workers. These could be exchanged for goods at the company store. Talk about a sound business for the fruit companies!

Almost adjacent to the old store, which today houses a bakery, you will see a small park. There is a monument dedicated to Honduran mothers here. This is a good place to stop for a few minutes and cool off under the shade of some rather large trees. You are now very close to being back in “Old Tela” which is on the opposite side of the Lancetilla River. (New Tela is where the Banana Company established its headquarters and residences for its executives). Just before the old Lancetilla River Bridge you come across the Catholic temple that is dedicated to the patron saint of Tela: San Antonio de Padua. This is the most important Catholic temple in the city.

As you walk into Old Tela, you have three blocks before being back in Central Park. This is one of the oldest areas of the city, however you will notice that buildings do not seem that old. This is because back in 1933 Tela was destroyed by a terrible fire that burnt most of the old buildings to a crisp! After this, the city hall issued an ordinance, declaring that all new buildings must be built out of concrete, to avoid the spread of fire. This street you will be on is known as Calle del Comercio, Commerce Street. Many of the old companies that have been in Tela for a long time have their buildings here. Such as the one that belongs to Banco Atlantida, that dates back to 1938. Our tour ends at the Central Park.

We hope you enjoyed this brief walking Tela City Tour. Please note that if you pretend to do it by bicycle or car, you will have to do in an inverted fashion. This because many of the streets are one way and traffic flows are mostly opposite to our route.

The Lafayette Trail: Mapping General Lafayette’s Farewell Tour in the United States (1824-1825)

Lafayette laying cornerstone at Bunker Hill

The Marquis de Lafayette laying the cornerstone at Bunker Hill in 1825.

“Permit us then to receive you as the Nation’s Guest and to render to you all the honors which it is in our power to bestow on you. They are the voluntary tribute of hearts burning with gratitude. We wish our children to understand that virtue alone has the right to such homage, and that in the midst of a free people merit never stays without reward .”

A representative from Portsmouth, NH welcoming Lafayette on September 1 st , 1824.

I n the early 1820s, the United States had solidified its political system and had become a nation free of any wartime binding agreement with the Republic of France. Thomas Jefferson , a lifelong friend of France, negotiated the Louisiana Purchase and secured westward expansion. The War of 1812, however, reminded the United States that homeland security needed to be a top priority for the next decades. As the generation of veterans of the Revolutionary War was wearing thin, emphasis was placed on building up national awareness capitalizing on the momentum resulting from previous conflicts. The early 1820s was marked by the Monroe Doctrine, a rationale enshrining American ambitions to secure a comfort zone around the United States of America, as the balance of power was rapidly changing in Europe.

At the same time in France, the French Revolution had brought about a new social order, which was no longer based on privileges for the few at the expense of the people of France, but rather a reshuffling of the political cards into the form of a Republic. The Marquis de Lafayette opposed the conservative Bourbon Restoration that followed the Napoleonic years but soon realized that liberal thinking had gradually weakened in France.

Portrait of Marquis de Lafayette

As the last surviving Major General of the Revolutionary War, Lafayette was invited by U.S. president James Monroe and Congress to visit the 24-state Union for what would become his Farewell Tour in the United States of America. Accompanied by his Secretary Auguste Levasseur, General Lafayette visited all the 24 states of the Union in 13 months (August 1824 – September 1825). The American experiment narrated by Levasseur was meant to serve as a driver to revive Liberals’ political views at a time when the Bourbon Restoration was stifling liberalism in France. In 1829, Lafayette started off a much smaller tour between Grenoble and Lyon in France [i] to challenge the authority of King Charles X and the secret appointment of Jules de Polignac as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

While almost 50 years had elapsed since the end of the Revolutionary War, the presence of General Lafayette in the United States unleashed a burning desire to express the peoples’ gratitude that had been building during the postwar period. Although the Farewell Tour of Lafayette is generally described as an outpouring of love and respect from the American people, looking at  a specific narrative emphasizing the preparations made for the reception of Lafayette remains a unique vantage point to capture that spirit. A source documenting Lafayette’s visit to the Adams Female Academy in Derry, NH highlights the aura surrounding him when he met with local people, which granted him a godlike presence impacting not only people’s mood but also local weather.

In his Book of Nutfield [ii] , George F. Willey provides a description of the preparations made to welcome Lafayette at the Academy based on a letter written at that time. “ Ladies from the village now came in, hoping to share our chance of seeing the hero. After remaining an hour they departed, supposing he might have taken some other route, and that it was useless to wait any longer. But we were not so ready to relinquish our hopes, and concluded to remain.” The letter also describes Lafayette entering a classroom. “ As he entered the teacher's desk I turned to look at the pupils. A magician's hand could not have effected a more sudden transformation. […] Smiles and animation had displaced fatigue and anxiety. […] Every eye glistened, but it was with enthusiasm ; every heart swelled with intense interest as we beheld the friend, the defender, the martyr of liberty.” The letter ends by emphasizing the local weather, reportedly greatly enhanced after Lafayette departed. “ As he left the building, the clouds which had obscured the heavens suddenly became dissipated in the west, and although the rain still fell in torrents, the sun broke forth with unusual splendor, forming a magnificent rainbow in the east. The splendid colors of the rainbow beautifully contrasted with the masses of dark clouds that still skirted the horizon.”

In his memoirs, Josiah Quincy Jr describes the moment when Lafayette was transferred to the authorities of the Granite State upon crossing into New Hampshire at the Methuen-Salem border in June 1825. “ To me his last words were ‘Remember, we must meet again in France!’ And so saying, he kissed me upon both cheeks. 'If Lafayette had kissed me,' said an enthusiastic lady of my acquaintance, ‘depend upon it, I would never have washed my face again as long as I lived!’ The remark may be taken as fairly marking the point which the flood-tide of affectionate admiration reached in those days.” [iii] This story encapsulates how people perceived Lafayette’s physical and spiritual presence during his visit, which was often characterized by the utmost desire to touch him and receive his personal blessing. Walter Harriman, who served two terms as Governor of New Hampshire, recalls the crowd in attendance when Lafayette passed through Warner, NH on June 27, 1825, “ Before Lafayette could alight from his carriage, an eager crowd pressed forward to look upon his face and to grasp his hand.” [iv]

The Farewell Tour provides a unique opportunity to look at the core of American society almost 50 years after the Revolutionary War, and to assess what the country thought of itself. It taps into remote and vivid historical backgrounds and reveals how the United States celebrated one of its heroes in large cities as well as in the countryside, all across the nation.

The Farewell Tour was characterized by a fast pace as well as very frequent unscheduled stops that Lafayette made along the way.

In New England alone, Lafayette made more than 170 stops on his two visits, in August-September 1824 and June 1825. He visited people he knew from the Revolutionary War such as Caleb Stark, son of New Hampshire General John Stark , Elias Hasket Derby Jr, officer during the Revolutionary War, and James Armistead Lafayette, former slave that played a pivotal role as a double agent during the Siege of Yorktown in September/October 1781.

Many streets, cities, towns and squares across the United States today are named after General Lafayette and his La Grange castle in the outskirts of Paris. Most of those names are a direct result of the momentous Farewell Tour.

The schedule of the Tour was mostly driven by commitments Lafayette had already made, especially to large cities like Boston, New York and Washington D.C. As a result, he consistently declined a lot of invitations originating from smaller cities and towns due to their geographic location. Indeed, venturing further into the countryside carried the risk of spending time on poorly maintained roads and undergoing mechanical failures that would delay the rest of the trip.

A letter from the Marquis de Lafayette to the Portsmouth Committee

Though many prearranged commitments were inescapable, some decisions and alterations to the existing itinerary could still be made on the fly. Lafayette, in an 1824 letter [1] to a committee from Portsmouth, NH, declines their invitation to visit Portsmouth because of previous commitments made in Washington, D.C. Notwithstanding the content of this letter, Lafayette rushed through Portsmouth in a one-day trip the same year. This letter embodies how pivotal geographic location and previous commitments were in decision-making on the Tour. The fact that Lafayette’s visit to Portsmouth lasted only one day, followed by nighttime travel to return to Boston by early the next morning, lets us capture somehow the “guilt” to have accepted an unexpected offer. The desire to catch up on the initial schedule, even if it meant spending the night in a carriage, lies behind this need to accommodate as many people as possible.

The Lafayette Trail, Inc. is a nonprofit organization with the mission to document, map, and mark General Lafayette's footsteps during his Farewell Tour of the United States in 1824 and 1825. It aims to educate the public about the national significance of Lafayette's Tour and to promote a broader understanding of Lafayette's numerous contributions to American independence and national coherence in preparation for the 2024-2025 tour bicentennial celebrations. The Trail brings together history, cartography and computer science in an education program whose principal goal is to raise awareness about Lafayette and the ideals he stood for throughout his life. It relies heavily on boots-on-the-grounds research that adds valuable materials kept in local historical societies and public libraries to the large-scale narratives covering (with much less detail) the whole trip. It features a user-friendly web-based mapping program ( thelafayettetrail.org )  as a tool capable of generating large interest in the French-American longstanding friendship, a powerhouse of progressivism that brought about democratic ideals still in motion around the world.

[1] The letter reads:

“Gentlemen,

The resolutions of the town of Portsmouth delivered by you in terms equally kind and flattering have excited the most lively feelings of gratitude. Happy I will be eventually to present the citizens of Portsmouth with the homage of sentiments which I have cherished for near half a century. I much regret, gentlemen, that previous engagements and the propriety of an early visit to the seat of the government of the Union make it necessary for me to limit this first eastern excursion to the city of Boston where I had been kindly invited to land from Europe. I shall now certainly return to this part of the country before I leave the United States when it will be my happy lot, as it long has been my eager desire to visit the town of Portsmouth and express to her citizens the grateful and affectionate respect that bind me to them.

Accept, gentlemen, my respectful acknowledgement and cordial attachment,

There are 21 Eastons in the U.S. A group of Lafayette College students spent their spring break visiting 15 of them.

T he Marquis de Lafayette, for whom Lafayette College is named, returned to the early United States for a grand tour in 1824 and 1825.

Though Easton was established decades earlier — the city hosted a reading of the Declaration of Independence, kicking off the Revolutionary War in which Lafayette became an early U.S. hero — the college was established by city residents a year after the French military leader departed for home.

This month, though, several Lafayette students and one alumnus, in the spirit of the school’s namesake, used their spring break to take on an adventure that would have made the Marquis proud. They visited more than a dozen Eastons throughout much of the U.S., returning Monday to the Lehigh Valley.

The group flew about 10 days and 5,000 miles, visiting 13 states with 14 communities named Easton (there are two in Wisconsin). Sophomore Selma O’Malley, who lives in California, visited the lone Easton in the Golden State, a suburb of Fresno, to bring the total to 15. One website lists 21 Eastons in the U.S. and 32 globally (10 in England and one in Ireland).

“I’ve never traveled much within America, so it really gave me a perspective of what it’s like to be an American and how diverse our country really is,” said Lucie Lagodich, a 2022 graduate who joined about halfway through the trip.

Trebor Maitin and Elisabeth Seidel, who work for The Lafayette student newspaper, came up with the idea for the trip last year after writing about a “chocolate chip cookie crawl,” to showcase Easton sites. This led the duo to think of something more than a crawl — a major-flyover undertaking.

They turned to senior Remy Oktay, whose family owns a Cessna 182 four-seat airplane. But Oktay, who spearheaded an electric plane flyover before Lafayette’s 2022 football rivalry game against Lehigh , became involved not only for his piloting skills. Oktay has built “awesome relationships” with different departments at the school and tapped into one organization to help pay for the students’ food, lodging and other costs, he said. Oktay’s family supported him with the plane expenses, he said.

Rita Chesterton, director of Lafayette’s Dyer Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship , said the center donated $500. Alumnus Bradbury Dyer III, whose $6 million gift established the center, kicked in about $4,000, Oktay said.

“One of the things we like to do is support students who have innovative ideas that help bring attention to the school,” Chesterton said.

The group brought Lafayette pennants signed by Nicole Hurd, the school president, and received a letter from Easton Mayor Sal Panto Jr. as a way of promoting “inter-Easton diplomacy,” Seidel said. They returned with one Lafayette pennant signed by leaders or residents from the other Eastons, including states and ZIP codes.

Both Chesterton and Panto, who has been Easton mayor for seven terms stretching four decades, had never heard of a similar spring break trip by Lafayette students.

“I knew there were a lot of Eastons; I only knew of five Eastons,” Panto said.

The students returned with souvenirs and countless memories, stopping for photographs at municipal buildings, community signs and neighborhood bars and grills. They rubbed elbows with community leaders and residents.

Among the things they learned about the other Eastons: Maine’s is known as a large producer of potatoes. Easton, Kansas, originally named for a general whose surname was Eastin, was changed to the familiar spelling because Andrew Reeder, first governor of the Territory of Kansas during the 1850s, was born in Easton — Pennsylvania.

“I like it that [Easton] was tied to us,” Seidel said during an interview Tuesday at The Lafayette office on campus.

While Seidel contacted officials from each Easton ahead of their trip, the students didn’t know what to expect once they landed. People they met proved to be friendly and inquisitive, the Lafayette travelers said.

“I really loved the human aspect of it,” Oktay said. “Put aside that we were in these towns and cities named Easton, we went to these places that were incredibly varied in size and demographics, occupations and livelihoods. And the people were so warm and welcoming of us that we could connect with them.”

The trip also helped tie the college and other Eastons to an upcoming milestone — the 2026 bicentennial of the founding of Lafayette by citizens of the Lehigh Valley Easton.

“This kind of brought me out of my shell,” said Maitin, who lives in Stroudsburg. ” … You go out to these little towns in the middle of nowhere, and everyone is happy to talk.

“It was an awesome experience,” said Maitin, who plans to study journalism at Columbia University’s graduate school. “I think I have learned more over the last 10 days than I will in the next 10 months.”

The one downside was taking in the communities over such a short time. Would Maitin have done anything differently?

“Go over summer break,” said Maitin, who, with Oktay, of Poughkeepsie, New York, is scheduled to graduate Lafayette in May. Seidel, who is from the Philadelphia suburb of Ardmore, is a sophomore. Lagodich, the 2022 graduate, also served as The Lafayette’s editor-in-chief.

You can see the students’ tour at polarsteps.com ; search for Remy Oktay or the Eastons of America.

Eastons of the U.S.

The Lafayette College students’ tour of 15 Eastons took them to the following states: Wisconsin (two), Illinois, Texas, Missouri, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Maryland. Another student and staffer with The Lafayette, Selma O’Malley, of California, visited an Easton near Fresno, California.
