Two sought-after countries. Twice the cultural cachet.

On the global pop culture scene, South Korea’s star has steadily risen in recent years. Spend two weeks getting to know these neighboring Asian nations, from their neon-lit cities to their rural villages to their serene, natural landscapes. Your tour package includes

  • 13 nights in handpicked hotels
  • 13 breakfasts
  • 4 dinners with beer or wine

Included highlights

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul
  • Visiting with Buddhist monks at Bulguksa Temple

Day-by-day itinerary

japan and south korea trip package

Board your overnight flight to Seoul today.

Welcome to South Korea! Settle in to your hotel this evening.

Meet up with your local guide and get to know South Korea’s capital city, Seoul. Situated in the northwestern reaches of South Korea, the thriving metropolis is home to modern skyscrapers, ornate Buddhist temples, grand palaces, and nearly 10 million residents. It’s also the perfect place to experience many of the fun and dynamic Korean cultural trends—from K-pop music to novelty foods—that have flourished around the world throughout the last decade.

  • Step inside the 14th-century, 7,700-room Gyeongbokgung Palace, which was built by King Taejo and is widely considered the most beautiful of Seoul’s five grand palaces.
  • Watch the Palace Royal Guard Changing Ceremony, a reenactment of the guard-changing procedure that took place during the Joseon dynasty; the ceremony features colorful reproduction costumes, as well as instruments and weapons, based on historical records.
  • Visit the National Folk Museum of Korea to learn about traditional ways of life, which are rapidly disappearing as a result of modernization and urbanization.
  • Enter bustling Gwangjang Market, the city’s oldest traditional market, where you’ll find everything from street food to silks to hanbok—traditional Korean clothing whose origins date back more than 2,000 years.
  • Enjoy a tasting of the market’s not-to-be-missed street food, followed by free time to shop and explore on your own.
  • Get to know your fellow travelers over an included welcome lunch, served with beer or wine.

History of the Korean War: DMZ Visit

From $119 per person

Board a high-speed bullet train bound for the city of Gyeongju. Often referred to as the “museum without walls,” Gyeongju is home to several impressive archaeological sites and three UNESCO World Heritage sites.

  • Climb aboard your coach for a short transfer to Bulguksa Temple; the treasured head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism was established on the slopes of Mount Toham in the eighth century.
  • Explore the temple with a monk as your guide, then choose to make prayer beads or a lotus flower lantern.

Sit down with your group this evening for an included dinner served with beer or wine.

Spend the morning exploring the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, the final resting place of nobility of the Silla Kingdom, or Golden Kingdom, which ruled from 57 B.C.–935 A.D. You’ll have a chance to enter one of its burial mounds and view some of the 11,000 artifacts and royal crowns that showcase the lavish lifestyles of Korean royalty.

Later, travel to the mountainous, seaside city of Busan, where you’ll visit the United Nations Memorial Cemetery. Learn about the history and impact of the Korean War, and pay your respects to those buried in the cemetery.

Enjoy an included dinner this evening served with beer or wine.

Meet up with a local guide to explore Busan, a dynamic port city at the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula. Home to roughly 3.5 million people, Busan is the country’s second-largest city. Here, visitors will find a little bit of everything, from bustling city streets to scenic beaches to excellent restaurants.

  • Pass through the heart of the city to popular Yongdusan Park and make a photo stop at its nearly 400-foot-tall Busan Tower, which features an observation deck and cafe.
  • Travel to colorful Gamcheon Culture Village and learn how it evolved from a downtrodden destination for Korean War refugees to a must-see destination known for its colorful dwellings and labyrinthine alleyways.

Today, fly to Fukuoka, the largest city on Japan’s Kyushu Island. Then, join a local guide for a tour of the city, which was formed in 1889 when the castle town of Fukuoka and the port city of Hakata merged.

  • Visit the eighth-century Kushida-jinja Shrine, whose highlights include a fountain where people pray for eternal youth.
  • Learn about the shrine’s famous Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, which takes place every July and culminates with residents of seven Hakata neighborhoods racing beautifully decorated floats along a three-mile course through the city.
  • Wander along the Naka River to Nakasu, a small island packed with stalls selling street foods such as Hakata ramen and yakitori.

Head to a local restaurant this evening for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Travel to Nagasaki this morning and meet up with your local guide. Set out to explore the area, which was Japan’s early gateway to trade with the West, as well as the target of an atomic bombing by the United States in 1945. Today, the area’s unspoiled beaches and islands attract swimmers, divers, and sea kayakers.

  • Visit Nagasaki Peace Park, which serves as both a symbol of hope and a reminder of the horrors of war.
  • Explore the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum’s exhibits, which shed light on the city’s devastating history and post-war life.
  • Sit down for an included lunch this afternoon at a local restaurant.
  • Set off on a walking tour through the city, including its cosmopolitan center, as well as historic neighborhoods, like Dejima, which was constructed in the 17th century as a man-made island to segregate Portuguese residents from the Japanese population.

Board a high-speed bullet train to Kyoto this morning. Then, get to know the city that served as the capital of Japan for more than 1,000 years and is still considered its spiritual capital.

  • Start in western Kyoto’s historic Arashiyama district, which is known for its temples, shrines, and stunning natural beauty.
  • Step inside the UNESCO-listed TenryĆ«-ji temple, which was originally constructed in the 12th century and is considered one of Kyoto’s most important sites.

  • Take in views of the rolling, tree-covered hills that surround the Hozu River.
  • Cross the wooden Togetsukyo Bridge, which was originally built more than 1,200 years ago and stretches nearly 170 feet across a river that’s known as the Hozu to the west and the Katsura to the east.
  • See the famous, 14th-century Kinkaku-ji temple, widely known as the Golden Pavilion, which sits at the edge of a tranquil reflecting pond and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Enjoy a free day in Kyoto or add an excursion.

Best of Korea & Japan

Japan and South Korea make a great pairing — though whether they’d agree about that is another question.

Like bickering siblings, Japan and Korea want you to know they’re unique — and they are. But at the same time neither can escape their shared history, which has shaped everything about them from their food and drink to their philosophy. This trip is about exploring similarities, noticing differences, and celebrating two distinct but equally fascinating cultures.

Transport in detail

In South Korea, transport will be by private car with a driver. In Japan, you’ll use the bullet train network to get around. Between the two, you’ll have a connecting flight (not included).

What's great

This itinerary explores classic destinations from different angles, combining well-known sights with lesser-known highlights

There’s a fantastic variety of destinations, both traditional and modern, spanning cities, countryside and coast

You’ll experience first-hand the subtle cultural differences between these close neighbours

Things to consider

Though we’ve included some more unusual experiences, all the destinations on this itinerary are well-trodden classics

Though we’ve included some day trips to get you into the countryside, this is a fairly city-focussed itinerary

The experience

Prefer to stick to one or the other? Check out the rest of our Japan and Korea itineraries — or have us design one just for you. Asia is your oyster.

Your adventure begins in Seoul, one of the most underrated capitals in Asia. A full day with a guide will help you get your bearings — perhaps including the traditional hanok district of Bukchon, the antique stores and sweet shops of back-alley Insadong, or street food and people-watching among the fashionistas in glitzy Myeongdong. The possibilities for your time here are endless, but be sure to make a stop at one of the city’s palaces (Gyeongbok is the biggest and most impressive) and check out sprawling Gwangjang Market, where you can eat your way through endless soondae sausage, bite-sized rice rolls and mung bean pancakes.

Statue at Bongeunsa Temple in Seoul

See (and hear!) the historical reenactment of the changing of the guards at Gyeongbok Palace

Visit a workshop and make your own wooden sujeo (chopstick & spoon set) to use on your travels

Make an optional day trip to Suwon, home of World Heritage Hwaseong Fortress

Ornate Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul

Your next destination will whisk you away from cutting-edge Seoul and back to the days of the Joseon Dynasty (or as close as you can get in modern Korea). Hahoe is a preserved clan village dating back to the 16th century, but it’s no museum: this is a living, working place with a sense of authenticity that’s often lacking in Korea’s reconstructed “folk villages”. Explore with a guide to demystify the local history and customs, then take the ferry across the river to Buyongdae Cliff for epic views. On your way back to Andong, stop at a World Heritage Confucian academy and the lovely Wolyeonggyo Bridge, arriving back in time to make the most of the city’s many bars and restaurants.

Wooden roof of building in Andong

Visit the Hahoe Mask Museum and learn how the locals keep their heritage alive through ritualistic mask dances and traditional festivals

See stunning views of Hahoe Village and the Nakdong River from Buyongdae Cliff

Spend a night in a traditional hanok house by the river, sleeping in a thatched cottage around a packed-earth courtyard

Andong-Hanok-house

It’s indisputable: Busan is the coolest kid in Korea. Kick off your exploration with an after-hours tour that’ll take in BIFF Square (the heart of Korean Hollywood), delicious street food, and markets brimming with K-Pop merch and knock-off Dolces. Then, go on a morning tour the slum-turned-Instagram-hotspot Gamcheon Village, with its jumble of steep, multicoloured alleys overflowing with sculptures, murals, craft shops, cafĂ©s, and amazing views. The rest of your time is yours to spend as you choose — whether that’s sipping a beer on Haeundae Beach, grabbing a famous giant hamburger at Gukje Market, or heading to the beautiful seaside temple of Haedong Yonggungsa.

Colourful houses on hillside in Busan, South Korea

See the mesmerising light show projected on Busan Tower at Yongdu Mountain Park

Explore the hidden shops and cafés of many-coloured Gamcheon Culture Village

Eat nakji octopus tentacles and sample fish soup at Busan’s famous Jakgalchi Market

Fish on display at fish market in Busan

You’ve tasted the best of Korea, now it’s time to see how Japan measures up. Where better to begin than Kyoto, the heart of Japanese traditional culture? Spend a full day with a guide exploring the hidden temples, shrines and gardens of this former imperial capital, then have tea with a real-life maiko (fledgling geisha): a privilege even few Japanese can boast. Kyoto has enough gold-clad temples, hidden moss gardens and bamboo groves to keep you busy for a lifetime, but if you do fancy a change of scenery it’s an easy day trip to the friendly deer in Nara, the street-food and nightlife of party-happy Osaka, or the wooded walking trails of nearby Mount Hiei.

Arashiyama bamboo forest

Enjoy an exclusive private audience with a maiko and learn about the “floating world” of the geisha

Explore the World Heritage temples and shrines of Kyoto with an expert guide to bring history to life

Escape the crowds with an optional day trip to traditional Nara — or embrace them with a day in the throng in buzzing Osaka

Geisha looking around corner and smiling at the camera

It may have begun life as a samurai’s hot-spring retreat, but Hakone today is a wacky wonderland of awesome art museums, upmarket resorts, pirate ship rides and Venetian glass forests (and that’s just for starters). A ryokan stay — complete with elaborate, traditional kaiseki feast — is de rigeuer, but the rest is up to you. Use the well-oiled network of boats, cablecars, funicular railways and buses to explore the region, passing through stunning mountain scenery swathed in forest, with Lake Ashi at its heart. Don’t miss the incredible Hakone Open-Air Museum — packed with interactive artworks, it’s often an unexpected highlight.

Ryokan hot spring

Take the cablecar to sulphur-spewing Owakudani, where visitors boil black eggs in the bubbling hot springs

Relax in a private hot-spring bath at your ryokan inn, where you’ll eat kaiseki food and sleep in tatami-mat rooms

If you’re lucky, get a fabulous view of Mount Fuji — most often sighted in the clear weather of autumn and winter

People walking through field with Mount Fuji in the background

Finally, Tokyo. What a place to conclude your trip. For us, it’s a contender for greatest city in the world. Throw yourself headlong into the local culture with an evening of food-sampling and bar-hopping with one of our resident connoisseurs — then spend a full day with a local guide to get the most out of the city. You might choose to spend it exploring the incense-wreathed temple and market stalls of traditional Asakusa, boat tripping on the Sumida River to hidden Hamarikyu Gardens, or exploring the blazing neon arcades and manga shops of Akihabara. Shops, bars, shrines, restaurants, art museums, karaoke: however you want to see out your trip; Tokyo's the place to do it in style.

Crowds of people at Shibuya Crossing

Visit vermilion Senso-ji Temple in the old-fashioned district of Asakusa or go tech-mad in neon-drenched Akihabara

Discover some of Tokyo’s lesser-known districts, such as the thrift shops of Shimokitazawa or the legendary ramen joints of Takadanobaba

Spend an evening izakaya-hopping through Shinjuku with one of our food-and-drink experts

After breakfast, meet with a tour guide at hotel lobby and start the tour.

O’Sulloc Tea garden/ Innisfree : Here, you can learn about Korea’s traditional tea culture. Interestingly, the entire building takes the shape of a green tea cup. It seeks to harmonize the cultures of the West and East and past traditions with the modern world. You can enjoy unique O’Sulloc teas or views of the nearby green tea fields and the surrounding landscape in the observatory, located on the second floor of the building.

In the afternoon,  Mt. Sanbangsan , a trachytic tuff lave dome connected to the sedimentary layer of Dragon coast. It is a bell-shaped thalloid that stands tall in the plains of Southwest Jeju. Then visit  Jusangjeoli Cliff [UNESCO GEO Park] . The columnar joints in the Jungmun Tourism Complex were designated as Natural Monument #433 on December 27, 2004. Enjoy a good time at  Jeongbang Waterfall , one of three main Jeju waterfalls, along with Cheonjiyeon Waterfall and Cheonjaeyeon Waterfall. It is the only one in Korea which spills directly into the sea. Harmonized with the sea, two 23m-tall columns of the waterfall with a sound like thunder make a magnificent view.

The trip was very good. The local guide went out of her way to make the tour enjoyable for all. Food was varied and adventurous at time. Transport was good. The pace of the tour was good with a few tweaks extras were added which filled the gaps.

An amazing time in Korea, getting a great taste of Seoul, Busan and Jeju. Our guides Olia and Damien were amazing and made sure we had an excellent time on the trip.

South Korea - a fascinating snap shot

This is a different and wonderful country which is very misunderstood. It has a lot to offer from the busyness of Seoul, and the beauty of the National Parks to the amazing volcanic island of Jeju. I thought this country would be a mixture of Japan and China yet it is quite different. The culture is fascinating - when they are into something (such as coffee shops, or hiking), they are into it big time yet the battle between tradition and western influence is fascinating to witness and observe in different areas in Seoul and in the rest of the country. Each area specializes in a different type of food (Kimchi always included) and this trip gives a great snapshot into different parts of South Korea from the cities (Seoul and Busan) to the DMZ to the countryside (national park and folk villages). This is not a very active holiday and there are not any long trips.

In case I don’t get a chance to say it in person, I want to thank you personally for a wonderful introductory trip to Japan. I know that I speak for the four of us when I say that we have thoroughly enjoyed this trip from start to finish and we are very grateful for your personal service and the extreme care that you took at every turn. Miki was the best guide we could have wished for – so knowledgeable and so candid – a delightful person. We will be very happy to recommend Top Asia Tour to our friends, acquaintances, and colleagues in the Canadian civil service. Many thanks again and I hope that we will have the opportunity to travel with you again in the future.

The Japan trip was fantastic! Due to the virus, we were only 4 girls + our amazing tour guide and we had a blast! A lot of the tourist places were empty which made our trip easier and more relaxing. A huge thank you to our tour guide, Becca, for all of the great memories, advice, and laughs.

Mar 15 ,2020

This has been one of the best tours I've been on, and despite being in Japan during the Corona pandemic Brooke our tour guide managed to make it the best tour ever. There were so many things we saw that normally would have been swarming with people but we had it all to ourselves. It was so amazing especially, with the Senso-Ji Temple in Tokyo, it was nothing short of magical seeing the temple and wandering around with so few people around, it was magical. And the pattern kept repeating itself throughout the tour it really was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure(pun most definitely intended). This tour exceeded all of my expectations and I'm so happy that I chose to go on this adventure.  I'm grateful that I had this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Japan.

An Unknown Country

There are very few British tourists visiting this lovely country and this trip with the tour operator was a good way of understanding the Past and the Present state of Korea. A visit to the DMZ gives you an understanding of the conflict between the South and the North. The gardens and ordinary road-side trees are beautiful and the people are charming. There was absolutely no hassle from the local people or officials.

It was so amazing, the guide was super nice and great. She helped me with my Korean whenever I had questions as well and very well informed she would do her best to make sure my trip was amazing. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, there was many cancellations, so it ended up being me my mom and one other girl. In all it was very safe nonetheless hotels were fantastic accommodation were all there, no issues at all I am very pleased and can’t wait for my next trip 100% will recommend traveling with TAT. Safe travels to everyone have a wonderful time if your planning anything soon

Rebecca was excellent. She gave clear daily itineraries. She was very organized and friendly! The tour was good. I especially liked the sushi and calligraphy classes and the monkey park. The shrines and palaces; as well as the hikes on the old highways, gave me a historical background for me. I also enjoyed the natural beauty of Japan. The steam vents of the volcano and Mt. Fuji! Rebecca exposed us to different restaurants allowing us to try different foods. All were fantastic!

Jan 12 ,2020

Saw a lot of Korea in a short time so it was exhausting at times, but overall was great fun

Jan 03 ,2020

I did this tour in Nov/Dec and had an absolutely amazing time. Japan is a fascinating country and we visited a mix of urban and rural areas. As a keen walker, the highlight for me was walking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route on the Kii peninsula walking through the mountain valleys between the 3 holy shrines. The train journey from Osaka to Tanabe on the Kii peninsula is stunning. Another highlight was walking part of the Nakasendo trail an ancient route between Kyoto and Tokyo that is now a walking route in the Kiso valley visiting the old post stations (juku) such as Magome and Tsumago. At Kawaguchiko we were lucky to have a perfectly clear view of Mt Fuji. Travel was mostly by train including bullet trains and buses in some mountainous areas that the train does not go to. Our accommodation was a mix of western-style hotels in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nagoya and ryokan(traditional Japanese style) in the rural areas. We had private guides in nearly all the locations we went to. Each day of walking was followed by a delicious Japanese-style dinner and soaking in the onsen - pure bliss. I would highly recommend this tour if you enjoy walking and would like to see a lesser-known part of Japan.

What a great trip. There were some changes needed due to a typhoon arriving the first day...however, Pablo did a great job of adjusting schedules and accommodating everything!

Nov 02 ,2019

This was a great experience and the information provided by our guide Samart about his country was of great value in the overall enjoyment of our trip. What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? Never having been to Asia before Bangkok

Oct 22 ,2019

Great tour that showed the Korean culture and history very well. The night temple stay was great and I learned so much doing it.

Sep 15 ,2019

Great way to see the major sights & experience traditional food & culture. Wow!!! Our Japan and Korea tour has a good balance of historical, traditional, and contemporary sights or experiences. TopAsiaTour managed the logistics of getting around cities and countries which made this effortless for us. The guide was incredibly helpful and always went that extra mile for the group. The size of the group was good and ensured you never missed anything.

Aug 21 ,2019

We did this tour for our honeymoon and it was fantastic! I'd recommend this trip to everyone. Our tour guide made Japan extra special. She went above and beyond to find information and recommendations for anything not included on the tour. She was polite, accommodating, and very informative and was one of the main reasons our experience was so very special. We look forward to visiting Japan again and would love to have Lily as our host again.

Jul 26 ,2019

Great way to explore South Korea South Korea is more than what it seems, and this tour is a great way to find out. Really enjoyed all the cultural inputs, the food, and the overall itinerary. Don't miss out on all South Korea has to offer.

The Tour was excellent, surpassing my expectations. Our guide Yumi was so knowledgeable, attentive, and caring that we learned so much about Japan, its people, and culture than we ever would have done as independent travelers.

Touring is tiring, You pack so much in but the tour had ample free time for further exploration or resting for those who needed it.

I would certainly recommend Top Asia Tour and would use it again.

Oct 10 ,2018

The tour was very enjoyable. Pablo, our Guide was superb in providing information regarding Japanese culture and history. The fact that he is passionate about the subject and his job made the tour great.

Dec 05 ,2017

One of the best trips I have done. Our tour guide, Hana, was exceptionally knowledgeable in local culture, places to eat, activities and optional activities, local transportation, etc. Her natural caring for people has shown throughout the trip. She always reassured each member of the group that they are enjoying the time and don’t feel left out. The tour was very well planned and I feel I have learned a lot more about the culture and people of this country. I would strongly suggest anyone do this tour.

Best of South Korea & Japan

japan and south korea trip package

Itinerary Details

FIRST-CLASS | PRIVATE-GUIDED: Discover the highlights of South Korea and Japan as you journey through culture, history, and nature. Start in bustling Seoul, then onto the historic temples of Gyeongju and the port city of Busan. Continue to Kyoto and some of Japan's most iconic gardens and temples. Understand the impact of Hiroshima before reveling in Japan's capital, Tokyo.

Best of South Korea & Japan

Experience two of East Asia’s most dynamic countries on this 14-day, privately guided trip.

The adventure begins in Seoul with a visit to Gyeongbokgung Palace Explore a traditional Korean village and have lunch at a local restaurant before diving into the Museum of Korean Contemporary History to learn about Korea’s incredible journey. We know lunch was good, but save some room for Gwangjang Market, where you can graze through local street specialties.

Take the high-speed train to Andong, and explore exquisitely preserved Hahoe Village, starting with the awesome view from Buyongdae. Then visit the 16th-century Neo-Confusion Academy before transferring to Gyeongju. Here, you’ll visit Seokguram Grotto, the main stone temple in Korea. Then go on to the Silla Kingdom’s Bulgaksa Temple, one of Korea’s most iconic sites. The National Museum of Gyeongju will give you the chance to answer any questions the morning’s adventures raised (and ask new ones!) before paying your respects to the Silla rulers at the Daereungwon tombs.

Go on to Busan and visit the heart of Jogye Korean Buddhism at Tongdosa Temple with its rare relics. Then visit a rare temple on Korea’s shoreline at Haedong Yonggungsa. Busan is also a key city for the United Nations, containing the UN Memorial Cemetery, honouring soldiers from 16 countries. This richly international port is also home to Gukje Market, a former black-market hub that’s today one of the hotspots of local life. Before the day is out, take in the fantastic view from Songdo Yonggung Suspension Bridge.

Time to switch things up! Fly to the boisterous and friendly port city of Osaka, Japan, and transfer to the stately former capital, Kyoto. If you’re looking for old Japan at its most exquisitely preserved, Kyoto is where you’ll find it, with over 2000 religious sites and 14 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A guided full-day tour takes you to some of the best, including the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) and sweeping views from Kiyamizu-dera. With a day at leisure, you also won’t want to miss Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its long path of red torii gates, or Chion-In Temple, the home of Japanese Buddhism.

Take the train to Hiroshima and visit the Peace Memorial Park. You’ll see the Atomic Bomb Dome before visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. After some local specialties for lunch, visit Miyajima Island and see the haunting Itsukushima Shrine, and serene Daishoin temple.

Your last stop is Tokyo, Japan’s sprawling megacity that continues to define the latest trends within the country and across the world. You can even stop en route to visit Himeji Castle if you wish. A half-day walking tour takes you around Asakusa, home to Senso-ji Temple, before visiting the Imperial Palace East Gardens. Your guide can leave you in either Ginza for superb shopping or the Tsukiji Outer Fish Market, where you can have lunch and pick up some gourmet souvenirs.

With another full day, visit Mount Fuji and stunning Hakone. Take a cruise on Lake Ashi, and ride the cable car up to Hakone Shrine Motosumiya. It’s an unforgettable last day in Japan, but of course, you may wish to stay longer in a city as diverse and energetic as Tokyo.

Also visit the Daereungwon tomb complex (Tumuli Park) to take a stroll and pay respects to the Silla rulers. Private Full Day Kyoto Gold Highlights Tour

Start your full day tour at one of Kyoto’s most celebrated sites, the world-famous Fushimi Inari Shrine. The shrine complex spans over the entire Mt. Inari (233m/765ft) and thousands of bright red torii gates line the mountain trail. You will visit the main shrine hall and the famed vermillion gate tunnel.

Next, travel to central Kyoto to visit Sanjusangendo Temple, the longest wooden structure in Japan. Inside, you will find 1001 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist saint of Mercy.

Then visit another celebrated site, Kiyomizu-dera Temple. This temple is older than Kyoto as the capital of Japan and is famous for its wooden platform stage, the Kiyomizu Butai. The massive stage was constructed out of wood and joints – no nails. At four story’s high, it was once a popular wish-making spot.

In the afternoon visit Kinkakuji Temple, a favorite to millions of visitors each year. You will quickly see why this jewel set into the northern hills is one of the most visited sites in Japan, it is covered in real gold leaf and vibrant at any time of year no matter the weather.

Continue to Kintano-tenmangu, a remarkable shrine to scholarship that was built to appease the spirit of an angry ghost. The shrine’s surrounding entertainment district was first built after a fire in 1444, when a large section of the temple had to be rebuilt, and the remaining timber was used to construct 7 tea houses that became the first ‘flower town’ or Geisha district in Kyoto.

Explore the Kamishichiken district, every bit as charming as its more touristy cousin the Gion district, with the added bonuses of fewer crowds and excellent photo opportunities.

Overall, met the expectation to see as much of Japan from one end to the other in three weeks. Hotels were great with a couple of exceptions, as were the meals provided. The tour is Spanish first, so the groups are 80% Spanish speaking and the groups are as well. English was broken at times, and I feel the tour guides left out a lot of the commentary in English. Something to consider.

Best Time to Visit South Korea

Korea has four distinct seasons with spring (April – June) and autumn (late September-November) being the best for visitors. Spring flowers in April and May and autumn leaves in late October and early November will intoxicate nature lovers.

Korean winter is cold while summer hot and humid. Japan’s main island, Honshu, can be described the same way.

Japan tours by LaurusTravel.com - Himeji Castle

Best Time to Visit Japan

Climatic patterns in Japan are diverse ranging from subtropical islands in the south to sub-arctic winter temperatures in northern Hokkaido.

Like neighbouring Korean Peninsula and most of China, Honshu (literally “Main Island” or “Main Province”), the island we travel across, has cool and cold weather in winter (Jan-Mar). June and July is rainy season across Japan except Hokkaido – a popular destination for Japanese to escape summer heat. Autumn (September to mid-December) is usually cool and clear on Honshu. Cherry blossom season from late March to early April and the autumn foliage season (November) see huge influx of international visitors to join the large number of local vacationers on the move.

If you have a choice, you should stay away from Japan during their Golden Week holiday (end of April to early May) when hotels and air flights get incredibly expensive. For the high prices, you’d be rewarded with overcrowding at all the tourist sites – a phenomenon that rivals China’s National Day holiday week (Oct 1-6).

Winter (Jan-Mar) is supposed to be low season for Japan’s tourism industry, not anymore. The rapid rise of middle class throughout Asia and the decline of the Japanese Yen against so many currencies in the past few years ensure Japan is overrun with international visitors all year round. That said, in winter hotels, the single biggest budget item for many, can be had for less than half of the price of high season.

Best time to See Cherry Blossoms

In general, the milder the climate, the earlier the cherry trees bloom. In subtropical Okinawa you’ll see cherry blossoms opening up as early as January while in Hokkaido you’ll have to wait till May.

In most of the cities on our itineraries, the cherry blossom season lasts from late March to early April for about two weeks. However, in the mountainous areas such as Mt. Fuji and Hakone outside Tokyo, Shirakawa-go near Kanazawa, and Arashiyama on the western edge of Kyoto, cherry blossoms are still abundant in late April due to cooler climate.

You’ll find beautiful cherry blossoms all over the Korean peninsula around the same time when cherry trees bloom on Japan’s Honshu Island.

Japanese Golden Week

The public holiday stretches from April 29 to the first few days of May. This is one of the busiest times of year for Japanese to travel and every major tourist site is packed with visitors. That’s why we don’t offer Japan trips overlapping the Golden Week.

Testimonials

After exhaustively researching tours to Asia we decided to book a trip to China with Laurus. Several months prior to the trip we added on the 13 day Japan tour as it was a short flight away. This back to back was a leap of faith as we booked with Laurus based on reviews, the website and our interactions with Laurus. We made the right decision! The tours exceeded our expectations.

The tour of Japan was wonderful. Our guide Addy stayed with us for the entire tour and she was terrific. She didn’t just provide information, she kept us interested and even used sang with a samurai puppet. We were on the go all day long. The hotels were quite nice and centrally located. Most of the restaurants were small local places and the food was delicious. Highlights of the trip included meeting with a geisha, who spoke perfect English, visiting Nara and seeing the sika deer and going to Shirakawa-go.

Without any reservation I would highly recommend Laurus. They are genuinely concerned that you are given the best quality tour available at a reasonable price.

Maureen S and Larry L

Boynton Beach, Florida

As repeat customers (first to China, and now Japan), we recommend Laurus to other people interesting in exploring Asia. We have found the guides to be well-informed; the accommodations, excellent; and the service, high-quality. We were very fortunate to have met Julius Yan, the owner and founder of Laurus, on both of our tours. He traveled with us in Japan, and greatly enhanced our experience there. He is extremely dedicated to providing an outstanding and personal experience for his clients. He is well-versed in Asian history, and provided cultural and historical perspectives that added depth to our experience.

Suzanne B and Mark S

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

We arrived home yesterday safe and sound. Thank you for a wonderful tour in Japan!

Based on what we heard from our friends about their trip to Japan with your company last year we knew we had picked the right company in choosing Laurus Travel for our own Japan vacation. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Your company delivered as promised and then some. There is no doubt in our mind that we received superior value for our money. Upon checking with the others in the group, we learned that our fellow travelers all felt the same. Laurus Travel should be proud of itself because this is the opinion from a bunch of seasoned travelers who have gone on tours with a large number of tour companies.

Thank you again for a wonderful trip!

South Korea Is A Total Bucket-List Destination – Here Are 10 Amazing Things To Get Up To

From the busy streets of Seoul to a night spent in a traditional hanok home – it's time to start planning your visit!

Hanifah Rahman

BuzzFeed Staff

I'm Hanifah and I love to travel. South Korea's been on my bucket list for years, but I’d never gotten around to planning the perfect trip.

View this photo on Instagram

So when I got the chance to join Intrepid’s first-ever Essential South Korea trip, I jumped at the opportunity.

As someone who loves a packed schedule but gets overwhelmed when it comes to the actual organising, the trip looked perfect. This isn't just your average holiday – it's an immersive experience packed full of adventures and is the newest addition to Intrepid’s 15-35 trips. The itinerary involves nine days of soaking up a wealthh of South Korean culture, visiting Seoul, Jeonju, Busan, and more.

From trying street food to staying in a traditional historic home, the itinerary is packed to the brim with so many different cultural experiences, and I can’t think of a better way to explore the country in all its glory. If you’re thinking about visiting South Korea and want to make sure you make the most of it, check out everything that’s included in the Essential South Korea trip here.

Top tips before you go!

– To make the inevitable language barrier a little bit easier, I suggest downloading the app Papago for on-the-go translations. Not only does it have pretty good vocal recognition, but you can also take photos of text and have it instantly translated.

– No one expects you to be fluent, but knowing some basics of the language goes a long way. “Annyeonghaseyo” (ahn-nyeong-ha-se-yo) means hello and “gamsahabnida” (kam-sa-ham-ni-da) means thank you. You’re sure to pick up more Korean along your journey, but it’s good to have those basics down.

– It’s likely that the data on your phone won’t work, but there are simple solutions at the airport. You can hire a pocket wifi egg or a data sim card at the arrivals gate.

– When it comes to navigating travel in South Korea, Google Maps has nothing on Naver . It gives you perfect walking directions, as well as the best ways to get to your destination (each subway station has multiple exits, and without Naver, I’d have been totally lost).

– A T-money card makes travelling super convenient. You can pick one up at any 7-Eleven for 3,000 KRW (about $2), and top it up in the subway station as you need. You can use a T-money card to pay for your travel on the bus, subway, and some taxis.

Here are some amazing things to get up to in Korea!

đŸ‡°đŸ‡· seoul đŸ‡°đŸ‡·, 1. take a step back in time at the historical gyeongbokgung palace.

Traditional Korean ceremony with performers in historical attire carrying flags in front of a palace

A few stops on the subway takes you out of the bustling city and back to quiet of the the 14th century. Built in 1395, Gyeongbokgung is considered to be the most beautiful palace from the Joseon Dynasty, and it’s easy to see why. As soon as we set foot on the grounds I was blown away by the ornate designs, and with families strolling around adorned in traditional hanbok clothing, it wasn’t hard to imagine just how regal the palace was back in its heyday. It’s a good idea to get there by 11 am, which is when the guard changing procession begins, a recreation of the traditional ceremony of the past.

2. Channel your inner idol at a K-Pop dance lesson at FRZM Studio

Group of people practicing a dance routine in a studio setting

In the heart of trendy Hongdae, you’ll find FRZM dance studio , which is home to some of Seoul’s coolest dancers. If you’ve seen even one K-pop video, you’ll know these guys don’t mess around when it comes to choreography, so why not learn from the best? Our teacher Peri was a total star who came prepared with a sleek routine that she somehow managed to break down for us dance newbies. While it didn’t take me long to discover that I don’t, in fact, have what it takes to be a K-Pop star (not even close!), I had so much fun trying to follow along with Peri and her flawless choreography.

3. Eat some delicious traditional food at Gwangjang Market

Variety of Korean side dishes displayed in metal trays at a market

South Korea is famed for its street food, and Gwangjang Market is the perfect place to find out exactly why. As you set foot into the market you’re greeted by an array of glorious flavours, and even though I wasn’t sure what I was smelling, I knew my tastebuds were in for a treat. Whether you fancy traditional fried chicken or soft-shell crab, there are endless stalls offering a plethora of delicious delights. There are so many options to choose from, and most of the stall owners are more than happy to give you a bite or two to sample. The market is also home to traditional goods, groceries, and various souvenirs, so it’s worth taking a look around after you’ve finished stuffing your face.

4. Sing your heart out at karaoke in Hongdae

Person in suit plays video game at event; observers take photos

If you’re looking for nightlife, Hongdae is the place to be – packed to the brim with bars and restaurants ready to welcome you with cocktails and anju (food to eat alongside your drinks), and of course karaoke. In Korean, karaoke is referred to as “noraebang”, which literally means a song room, but I don’t think that definition does it justice. They have endless collections of K pop hits (yes, we did “Gangnam Style”) as well as all the classics, and with the disco ball and lights it really feels like your own private night club.

đŸ‡°đŸ‡· Jeonju đŸ‡°đŸ‡·

5. spend the night in a traditional hanok village.

Traditional Korean hanok house at night with illuminated windows and outdoor sitting area

Hanoks are traditional Korean houses, dating all the way back to the Joseon dynasty, and to put it plainly, they’re stunning. Historically, hanoks housed entire families, but the ones you can stay in have been transformed into guest houses. As soon as I stepped into the courtyard I was greeted by some friendly village cats , and things just kept getting better from there. While they’ve been updated with modern conveniences, the heart of the homes remains authentic; the wood panelled walls are decorated with traditional Korean art and the bed folds neatly away into the cupboard. As a sleep lover, I wasn’t sure how I’d fare on the futon-like floor mattress, but with the heated floors and tranquil surroundings, I slept like a baby.

6. Take a Kimchi-making class with the Kimchi master

Person preparing kimchi with ingredients on table

Kimchi is a staple of the Korean diet, and if you’ve had it before, you’ll know why. We joined Kim Myeong Ok – a total kimchi genius – to learn all about what goes into making the traditional food. After finding out the many seasonings that go into the dish (and snacking on the pickled cabbage, of course), we jumped straight into TV chef mode, determined to be the best rookie kimchi makers we could. Myeong talked us through the marinating process, and with our aprons and long gloves, we really got into the technique. Once you’re finished, you can pack it all up to enjoy eating back home – it’s the perfect holiday souvenir.

7. Visit the ancient ruins of Webosansung

Stone archway and pathway in a historical outdoor setting

This historic mountain fortress was built in the 17th century, as a way to help evacuate and protect residents in the late Joseon Dynasty. The wall is over eight thousand years old, and it’s surrounded by miles and miles of forest hills – it really feels like taking a stroll in the past. It’s not too far from Awon Museum, which is located across three 250-year-old hanoks that overlook a mountain village; their stunning gardens have some spectacular views.

8. Get a body scrub at The Hanok Spa

Exterior view of a building with signs, a person with backpack standing in front, parked cars visible

This might look like an unsuspecting tower block, but inside is a menagerie of pampering and self care. If I’m being honest, I was a bit intimidated when I first approached the spa – I knew I’d have to strip off, but not much more. This 24 hour spa is really popular with the locals, and while there was a bit of a language barrier, the staff there were super friendly. There are heated pools to rest and relax in, and it didn’t take long for me to feel at home among the older ladies chatting away and watching TV. As a dedicated exfoliator, I wasn’t expecting too much from the body scrub, but boy was I wrong – I could literally see my dead skin getting sloughed off. I left the spa feeling like a soft little peach, and I couldn’t recommend it more.

đŸ‡°đŸ‡· Busan đŸ‡°đŸ‡·

9. watch the waves at haedong yonggungsa temple.

Traditional temple by the sea with connecting arched bridges and rocky landscape

Set right on the shoreline, Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is a wonder of both natural and historical beauty. First built in 1376, the Buddhist temple is a place of reflection and peace, and it's truly breathtaking.  As I walked down the temple’s 108 steps, I was blown away by the picturesque views surrounding me – intricately designed architecture, ethereal statues, and gorgeous stone lanterns, to name a few delights. I loved learning about the historical Buddhist traditions and symbolism, but my favourite part was the tranquil backdrop of crashing waves. There are lots of temples to visit, but none as unique as this one.

10. Take a stroll through the stunning Gamcheon Culture Village

Densely packed houses in varying sizes on a hillside, no people visible

With its twisting alleys and colourful houses, Gamcheon Culture Village feels like a storybook come to life. Decorated by professional artists, art students, and residents, it’s easy to see why the village is one of Busan’s most popular tourist spots. While strolling through the lovingly adorned streets, we were met with tons of artisan shops selling stunning handmade trinkets and some wonderful art installations. BTS fans: keep an eye out for the Jimin and Jungkook mural, it’s really something to behold.
