Your fully equipped 29ft Mako and crew will be awaiting you before it is off for a scenic coastal boat ride to Punta Sur, our main fishing area. You will drive past many of Cozumel's landmarks, resorts, beach clubs, dive, and snorkel sites in the Marine Park before arriving at the South Drop-Off. This underwater island structure provides perfect fishing grounds and extends over several miles and when fishing near the drop-off, the depth is between 100 and 3'000 feet.Your crew will then start to rig the fishing gear, for bait we mostly use rigged or unrigged ballyhoos and plastics, depending on the fish we are looking for, normally with 4 to 6 lines in the water including outriggers and downriggers. Trolling is done at approximately 8 MPH which allows for a smooth ride while enjoying the music. Ice-cold drinks including bottled water, beers, and sodas as well as Rum and Tequila are available throughout your private fishing charter and you can choose from 4, 6, or 8 hours (see shopping cart options). When a fish is hooked, be ready to put on a fight with one of the 30, 50, or 80 reels! The crew will assist you in anything you need to make sure you have a safe and exciting fishing experience in Cozumel, Mexico! You may also choose to bottom fish or live-bait fish where there is a large variety of fish including red snapper, triggerfish, grouper, amberjack, tuna, barracuda, and many many more!Another option to add to your private fishing charter is marine park snorkeling as well as a visit to the famous El Cielo sandbar where you can swim and snorkel in crystal clear waters, watch stingrays and fish, and have a cold drink in knee-deep water (visiting El Cielo if weather or government permits). If you are looking for something that includes more snorkeling, please see Cozumel Private Marine Park Snorkel and El Cielo Sandbar Powerboat Excursion which includes the same great boat and crew.At the end of your fishing shore excursion, we return to the meeting location, just a short taxi ride away from downtown Cozumel, any of the international cruise ship terminals or resorts.

19 best Cozumel shore excursions

With dozens of Cozumel cruise excursions to choose from, it can be hard to decide which one to take. So we did our research and looked at which Cozumel day trips are the most popular and get good reviews.

Here’s a list of the best excursions Cozumel has to offer you as a cruise ship passenger. With such a wide variety of things to do in Cozumel , we’re sure you’ll find the perfect activity for your day in port!

1. Enjoy a catamaran cruise, snorkel, and beach party

Beach parties are popular Celebrity Cozumel excursions. Here, a woman is sunbathing on a catamaran.

El Cielo Beach tops the list of cruise shore excursions in Cozumel—a secluded sandbar that can only be reached by boat. Here, you can snorkel and play in shallow waters surrounded by starfish.

This 5-hour catamaran excursion includes El Cielo plus a private white-sand beach where you can relax on a lounge chair or hammock, play on a floating water park, kayak, or paddleboard. A delicious lunch and unlimited drinks are included.

2. Soak up the sun at Paradise Beach Club

Aerial view of Paradise Beach Club in Cozumel Mexico, one of the most popular Cozumel cruise excursions

Beaches rank among the best Royal Caribbean excursions in Cozumel. There are plenty you can visit on your own.

However, if you’re looking for Cozumel beach excursions, all inclusive is the way to go. Many cruisers say that Paradise Beach Club is one of the best beach clubs in Cozumel. The beach here is beautiful, and the staff is very friendly and attentive. Buy an all-inclusive pass to hang out all day.

You’ll lounge on chairs shaded by palm trees, grab lunch at an onsite restaurant or have lunch served to you on the beach, and drink your fill of domestic liquors, beers, and soft drinks from the open bar. It’s the perfect beach break—no planning required.

ⓘ TIP: The easiest way to get to Paradise Beach is by taking a taxi from your cruise ship or hotel. It is about a 10-15 minute taxi ride and costs about $16 each way (per TAXI not per person) for a car for up to four people. There are also taxi VANS that take up to 8 people.

3. Explore Mayan ruins in Tulum

Some of the Mayan ruins in Tulum Mexico

It’s easy to see why so many cruise passengers say Tulum is one of the best carnival excursions in Cozumel. Tulum is a well-preserved Maya walled city that was once a major port. It’s located an hour south of Playa del Carmen on the coast and makes for a great day trip from Cozumel.

The site has several structures you can explore, including El Castillo, which sits atop a cliff 40 feet (12 meters) above the Caribbean Sea.

If you want to learn more about Maya culture and history, there is a small on-site museum with some interesting artifacts. You can also stroll along the beach below the ruins or go for a swim to see the ruins from the water.

Some Cozumel tours combine visiting the Tulum ruins with other attractions. For example, this excursion takes you to both the Tulum and Coba ruins and ends with swimming in a cenote.

4. Snorkel and swim with stingrays

person wearing snorkel gear and looking at a stingray.

Swimming with sharks and rays at Stingray Beach has to rank as one of the most unique Cozumel excursions of all. This lets you interact up close with this iconic marine species in crystal clear waters. You’ll get to hold, touch, feed, and snorkel with stingrays and hear about the coral restoration efforts at the park.

This tour is 1.5 hours, starting with meeting the stingrays in waist-deep water for 30 minutes. After feeling the rays softly brush against your legs, you’ll get to move to a deeper enclosure where you can snorkel with rays and a myriad of colorful coral reef fish.

5. Spend a day at Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park

girl swimming with a dolphin at Chankanaab National Park

If you’re looking for cheap Cozumel excursions or a Cozumel excursion for families, this one’s for you! Located in the National Reef Marine Park, Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park has plenty of activities for kids and adults alike. In our opinions, Chankanaab deserves its reputation as one of the best Carnival excursions in Cozumel.

Be prepared, because Chankanaab National Park isn’t your normal national park. A day pass to Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park gives you sea lion and manatee shows, a botanical garden, a beach club, a crocodile farm, and access to the beach and marine park. This is a good option if you just want to lounge by the pool, snorkel offshore, soak up some sun, and take a dip in the lagoon.

However, if you’re looking for a Cozumel excursion that includes more adventure, Chankanaab has more to offer you. There may be an additional fee, but you can snorkel with manatees , scuba, snuba, swim with dolphins , enjoy a tequila tasting, participate in a temazcal , and more.

6. Tour the island of Cozumel

Colorful letters spell out Cozumel on the beach

If you’d like to explore Cozumel and learn more about the history and culture of the island, then a 5-hour private island tour with an expert guide is a must. You’ll also get to know more about Cozumel’s fascinating archaeological wonders.

After pickup, you’ll be taken to some of the main sights on the island. This includes the local market, parks, iconic neighborhoods and religious buildings. You’ll also get to visit Chen Rio Beach on the east of the island, before arriving at the famous rock formation known as ‘El Mirador’.

To learn about the island’s history, you’ll visit San Gervasio Mayan ruins and drive through the traditional lands of the Cedral where there’s a Mayan settlement. On this tour you’ll also learn about the interesting Holy Cross traditions from your tour guide.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for an exciting and unique way to explore Cozumel, the Amazing Cozumel Race is definitely worth considering. This interactive half-day clue based adventure game is a perfect combination of sightseeing tour and scavenger hunt.

Teams of two to eight people will compete to solve mysteries and crack clues as they navigate self-guided stops around the city. It’s a great way to see the sights and have fun with friends, family, or coworkers.

At the end of the Amazing Race, there will be an awards ceremony with prizes for the top finishers, as well as complimentary beverages and snacks for all participants.

7. Take a food tour

Mexican food: steak, avocado guacamole with tortilla chips, jalapenos and beans

8. Visit Isla Mujeres

sign on the beach that says Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is a picturesque small island not far from Cozumel, famous for its white sandy beaches, Mayan temple and sea turtle sanctuary.

If you’re keen to visit Isla Mujeres as a day trip from Cozumel, one of the best ways is on a scenic catamaran tour. Spend the day relaxing in the sunshine, snorkeling, and taking in some of the most idyllic Caribbean ocean views.

There are several tour options to choose from. This 10-hour catamaran tour with lunch and an open bar , includes hotel transfers and stops off for snorkeling at a coral reef park on the way to Isla Mujeres. Prepare to be mesmerized by all the fish that gather near the boat as your guide sprinkles fish food into the sea. Enjoy a buffet lunch on the beach and sit under a palm tree if it gets too sunny.

Another option is a flexible and high-speed round-trip ferry ride from Cancun to Isla Mujeres . This luxury ferry ride features reclining leather seats, a kids area and a snack bar as well as other amenities. Carrying up to 800 passengers, there are multiple ferry crossing times each day which means that you can easily visit Isla Mujeres as a day trip and plan your own itinerary while there. It is, however, advisable to book your ferry tickets in advance.

9. Go on an Atlantis Submarine expedition

Atlantis Sub on the sea floor

Want to explore the undersea world but stay dry? The Atlantis Submarine is perfect for you! This 63-foot-long, 48-passenger submarine will take you on an underwater tour of Cozumel’s stunning reef system.

You don’t need to be a certified diver to go on this tour, and the submarine provides all the necessary safety gear. The submarine descends to a depth of 100 feet (30 meters), where you will have the opportunity to see a wide variety of marine life, including sharks, rays, eels, and turtles.

The Atlantis Sub is a great activity for families with children, as it is both safe and educational. Your knowledgeable guide will provide lots of insightful information as you journey along the reef.

10. Enjoy a beach break at Playa Mia Grand Beach & Water Park

The beachfront at Playa Mia Water Park in Cozumel

A day pass to Playa Mia gives you access to one of the best public beaches in Cozumel Mexico. Playa Mia has more than 20 water park attractions, lounge chairs on a white sand beach, kayaks and sailboats, a kids’ playground, a swim-up pool bar, and more.

You can also upgrade to an all-you-can-eat buffet, open bar, Hobie cat and clear kayak access, towels, lockers, and beach umbrellas.

11. Scuba dive the second-largest coral reef in the world

The clear turquoise waters around Cozumel are the home of the second-largest barrier reef in the world: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. With visibility over 100 feet, this makes Cozumel a top destination for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Palancar Reef is home to a wide variety of marine life, including turtles, stingrays, eels, and over 500 species of fish. The reef is also home to a shipwreck, the El Cid, which sunk in 1961.

On this two-tank scuba diving tour , you’ll dive with a local guide who shares commentary about the marine ecosystem in Mexico. The excursion includes two tanks for two dives, a guide, and boat transportation from Cozumel

Or if you prefer, you can do a one-tank reef dive with full-day access to Chankanaab National Park . This is the perfect scuba diving excursion for certified and noncertified divers. You can easily enjoy the tropical fish, underwater sculptures, and coral reef formations, then relax at Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park. Enjoy full access to the amenities including the beach, hammocks, shaded palapas, sea lion show, and crocodile exhibits.

12. Snorkel in the Caribbean

Surrounded by coral reefs that are brimming with brightly colored marine life, snorkeling is one of the most popular activities on Cozumel. If you want to experience the best snorkeling spots and learn about the local biodiversity, then this fully guided half day snorkeling tour to Palancar and Columbia reefs, El Cielo Sandbar and El Cielito Beach is an unmissable opportunity.

Palancar reef on the southwest of Cozumel is known for its abundant marine life including sunfish, parrotfish, sea turtles, moray eels, nurse sharks and barracuda. The Colombia reef is well known for frequent turtle sightings and dive-throughs, and the El Cielo Sandbar is a shallow water area that’s popular for seeing large starfish in magnificent turquoise waters. And the pristine El Cielito Beach lives up to its name of being a “little heaven”.

13. Zipline through the jungle

Woman in Cozumel Mexico zip lining

If you enjoy adventure and fancy an adrenaline rush, then you might like to try ziplining through the Mexican jungle on Cozumel .

You’ll get to see Cozumel from a different perspective above the trees from 6 different canopy platforms where you’ll then zip along lines in a harness. This is a great thrill-seeking activity for families and children and usually lasts around an hour.

Your tour starts with a safety briefing where you’ll be given a helmet. You’ll then climb up about 45 feet to the first platform where your harness will be secured. And then you can start cruising above the trees on the zip lines, with views of the ocean in the distance.

14. Go horseback riding on the beach

Person riding a horse on the beach

With miles of white sandy beaches, Cozumel is an island paradise for horseback riding. Whether you’re an experienced rider or a novice, you can take a horseback beach riding tour that pairs you with a horse for your skill level.

Enjoy 30-minutes in the saddle on Mr Sanchos Beach where you’ll pass mangroves, forests, farms and sparkling Caribbean waters. This tour is perfect for families, couples and friends, although it is not recommended if you have back problems, are pregnant, or are over 200 pounds.

15. Explore cenotes and underground caves

Yucatan cenote with grab rope

Cenotes are naturally formed water reservoirs or sinkholes that are common in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Formed by limestone bedrock that collapsed leaving a hole or underground water cave, cenotes come in many shapes and sizes – some forming underground labyrinths of connected caves.

You can spend 3 to 3.5 hours in a small group tour exploring the cenote at Rio Secreto in Playa del Carmen. This cenote is dramatically decorated with natural stalactites and stalagmites, perfect for taking plenty of incredible instagram-worthy photos.

Your tour leader will guide you through a network of rivers and underground caves, after kitting you out with a wetsuit for swimming. After all the swimming, you’re bound to have worked up an appetite – luckily your light lunch offers lots of local foods.

16. ATV adventure/dune buggy excursion

two people riding on atv vehicles

Are you an adrenaline junkie or an outdoor adventure enthusiast? Then you might like to combine three of the top adventure tours near Cozumel in one action-packed day tour. This 4-hour family-friendly tour includes ziplining, riding through the jungle on a 4×4 ATV, and exploring an underwater cenote.

After being collected from your hotel in Cancun or Riviera Maya, you’ll  be taken to the heart of the jungle where you’ll zip through the air between canopy platforms, along 6 zip lines and 3 interactive bridges.

You’ll then have 50 minutes to explore the jungle on a Honda 220cc ATV with your guide, getting a glimpse of the local wildlife and scenery.

Finish off your tour with a refreshing dip in a Mayan cenote at “Ruta de los Cenotes” before being dropped back at your hotel.

17. Visit Mayan Bee Sanctuary

Two people learning about the Mayan Bee Sanctuary

Learn about bees and the nutritional and medicinal properties of honey, as well and how ancient Mayans valued honey for its healing powers when you visit the Mayan Bee Sanctuary in Cozumel .

Your guide will explain how bee hives are intricately structured, how colonies organizational structures work, and the role of the queen bee and her drones, the guardian, and the princesses.

And at the end of the tour you’ll also get to sample some different honey varieties and learn about what other products bees can help us to make.

18. Take a glass-bottom boat ride

Child in foreground with mask and snorkel. Glass bottom boat in the background with people on it

If you want to observe sea life from the ocean, then a glass bottom boat ride is a great way to do it.

Perfect for non-swimmers as a way to get a glimpse of underwater life, you can hop on a Cozumel 2-hour glass bottom boat tour that includes optional snorkeling at 3 of the island’s best-known reefs.

This glass-bottom boat has a sun deck for those who want to catch some rays and enjoy the above-water views. And its glass bottom allows you to watch life underwater without having to get wet.

19. Play at Xcaret Park

Xcaret Park on Riviera Maya Mexico

Xcaret Park on the Maya Riviera is one of the top Yucatan Peninsula tourist attractions. Boasting over 40 attractions, this expansive nature park is definitely a place you can spend a full day exploring and being entertained.

That’s why purchasing the full day Xcaret Park pass —which includes lunch PLUS a nighttime cultural show—may be the highlight of your vacation.

Some of the top things to do at Xcaret include the Coral Reef Aquarium, the Manatee Lagoon, the Butterfly Pavilion and Spider Monkey Island.

Float along a network of below ground-level rivers that flow into a cenote; relax on pristine beaches and snorkel in sheltered coves; visit a Mayan village and Mexican cemetery; take a raft tour down the Paradise River; explore authentic Mayan temple ruins; walk along lush jungle trails; and explore Jaguar Island. There are an abundance of things to do and see at Xcaret – which means you’ll have to plan your day carefully.

There are also a range of activities in the park that are an additional charge, but worth considering. For example you can swim with dolphins, swim with nurse sharks, or have a close encounter with a stingray.

The evening performance with dinner is another highlight of visiting Xcaret. The Xcaret México Espectacular will give you an overview of ancient history and folklore at the Gran Tlachco arena where over 300 performers in bright costumes will entertain you.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, no matter what you’re into, there’s a Cozumel shore excursion that you’ll enjoy. When you start planning a vacation to this Mexican island, be sure to include one or more of the experiences mentioned in this article to make the most of your time there.

Whether you’re looking for an adventure or simply want to relax on the beach, you’re sure to find the perfect excursion in Cozumel.

Is it better to book excursions through the cruise ship?

You can take excursions through the cruise line, book tours yourself, or visit Cozumel attractions on your own with advice from a good travel guide .

Each option has pros and cons. Your decision will depend on your budget, how much time you want to spend onshore, and whether you prefer the convenience of having everything taken care of for you.

Here are some things to consider:

Booking excursions through the cruise line

  • Good if you like traveling with a large group
  • Can get a full refund if the weather is bad
  • Transportation, guide, and admission fees are often included
  • More likely to get back on the ship on time
  • Can be more expensive than booking a tour yourself
  • You may not be able to customize the itinerary to your interests
  • You may not get the same level of service as you would with a private tour guide
  • You may not be able to hear your guide
  • May require a minimum number of people to run

Booking tours yourself

  • Can be cheaper than booking through the cruise line
  • More options to choose from
  • You can customize the itinerary to your interests and any special needs
  • Your guide can answer all your questions
  • You can choose smaller tour groups or go solo with a private guide
  • A smaller group size means you can spend more time at each stop
  • You can usually change plans if you want to stay longer or leave early
  • Have to do your research to find reputable tour operators
  • No guarantee you’ll get back on the ship on time
  • Admission and transportation fees are not always included
  • Doesn’t usually have a minimum number of people required to run
  • Usually can’t be canceled at the last minute

Going on your own

  • Can be the cheapest option
  • You’re free to come and go as you please
  • You have total control over your itinerary
  • You’re responsible for getting back on the ship on time
  • It may be more difficult to find your way around
  • Admission fees are not always included
  • May require more research in advance

If you want a stunning vacation memory that will stay with you forever, then our PREMIUM El Cielo Snorkeling Tour is for YOU, because …

The Day You Visit This ‘Heaven On Earth’ Will Be Seared Into Your Memory Forever!

cozumel excursion photos

The Spanish name, ‘El Cielo’, translates into English as ‘Heaven on Earth’ and never was a location more aptly named.

Imagine snorkeling in the Most Beautiful part of Cozumel’s Marine Park - within a closely protected area - entry to which is Forbidden to Most Snorkelers …

Because of that, it absolutely teems with a rich variety of marine life - in stark contrast to the relatively barren reefs which most of the snorkeling tours have to settle for, with far fewer fish and other species.

But we are in a privileged elite as one of the very few licensed operators to fulfill the very strict ecological demands by operating ultra eco-friendly boats.

And thus are allowed to enter the restricted marine life rich protected area forming Cozumel’s underwater wonderland – The Marine Park - in our glass-bottomed boats.

Allene and her boyfriend swimming in the blue waters amazed by the marine life.

Does that sound too good to be true?

That’s what Carol Bell from Lincoln, Nebraska thought – until she experienced our service …

When I'm back on the island I'm booking again!"

When we arrived at our meeting point just across the street from our cruise pier we were welcomed as if we were family and immediately boarded the boat and the fun began right away.

We snorkeled two reefs to see amazing marine life and the grand finale was a place called El Cielo, the most beautiful place in the world.

When I'm back on the island I'll be booking again. Thanks Alberto and Pancho for a fabulous time.

The FAMOUS El Cielo, Palancar & Colombia Snorkeling Tour…

When you slip gently into the warm, crystal clear tropical water...

You’ll enter a different world of turquoise colored silence with the wonderful feeling of weightlessness – just as if you were flying. And, if this is your first time snorkeling in these protected waters, you’ll be stunned at the sheer volume and variety of the colorful tropical fish swimming among the impressive reefs of both hard and soft coral. We encourage this desirable state of affairs by feeding the fish!

The Most Spectacular Snorkeling Reefs in the area lie within the protected Cozumel Marine Park area .

But, because we are one of the very few businesses who have invested in the high quality glass-bottomed boats, with the latest environmentally friendly engines, to meet the very strict ecological requirements needed to preserve this marine wonderland, you will enjoy a spectacular trip of a lifetime with us.

YOU'll visit a total of 3 different Snorkeling Locations . Which – needless to say – are 3 of the most astonishing among a whole area of spectacular reefs .

The first of these is the aptly named ‘Palancar Gardens Reef’…

Ronna and her boyfriend very stunned about the Cozumel corals.

Palancar Garden Reef is an impressive reef that consists of many different life forms. Many people who want to learn how to snorkel land in this spot.

What makes this reef unique is the presence of very high coral systems that have many different living beings on them. As we already said, this is a picture that you will remember forever.

While you are underwater, you will notice the beautiful sea turtles. They are very common in Palancar Gardens Reef. Besides, you will probably have a chance to see some butterflyfish, angelfish, black groupers and even some green moray eels too.

Generally speaking, this is a shallow reef which is perfect for novice snorkelers.

Then you’ll visit the ‘Colombia Shallows Reef’…

It is tough to say which reef in Cozumel is the best, but some things make this reef ideal for snorkelers.

For starters, this reef is in an area that looks like a natural bay. As the name suggests, the water is not very deep, and the experience level needed for snorkeling in this area is beginner/novice.

When it comes to marine life, this area blesses with extraordinary life forms. For instance, hawksbill sea turtles, as well as the green sea turtle, are probably the first thing you will notice in the waters.

Chrystal and her husband very happy to start a snorkeling tour with her son.

You'll also see moray eels, barracuda, octopuses, starfish, angelfish, grouper and other species of exotic fish.

This colorful reef will spice up your holiday in Cozumel. That's for sure.

Lastly - the highlight of the day - ‘El Cielo Beach’…

Angel snorkeling to the bottom of the sea and seeing some beautiful starfish on his way.

After you’ve had ample time to enjoy a breathtaking snorkel trip around both the Palancar Gardens Reef and the Colombia Shallow Reef, we travel the short distance to the sandbar of ‘El Cielo’ – ‘Heaven On Earth’ - for our beach party finale!

There you’ll be able to quickly understand why this magical spot is so aptly named as you drink in the magnificent beauty so readily visible in just four feet of beautiful turquoise, crystal clear water.

At the same time your mouth will be watering in anticipation of the feast to come as your guides prepare fresh guacamole for you to savor.

You'll enjoy an exceptional El Cielo Snorkeling excursion that is second to none - as many past customers will attest…

Ended the tour at El Cielo - White Sandy Beach, Blue Sky, Great Guacamole, Fruit, Beer and Drinks while listening to music"

Boat was there promptly to pick us up, smiles and good vibes from the crew that knows service is their game.

The ride to the first snorkeling reef was about 20 minutes there we saw turtles, a ray and barracudas.

The second spot was a shallow reef Alberto refers to as his "sacred garden" - kind a cute name for a place.

We ended the tour at "El Cielo" a white sand, sky blue beach where we had great guacamole, fruits, beer and drinks while listening to music, playing on the water and making acquaintances with the rest of the group.

Every day is a good day with Alberto!

You'll be escorted by fully Licensed & English Speaking Guides…

Every boat Captain and Snorkeling Guide (mostly my uncles and cousins) are Certified Snorkeling Guides and Speak excellent English , so your spectacular trip won’t be spoilt by having to struggle to understand what they are saying.

In fact, that is one risk you really cannot afford to take

Because – in situations like this, when safety must be paramount – it’s vital you immediately understand every word your crew says, without a second’s doubt or hesitation.

The three Carlson brothers swimming in the el cielo beach amazed by the sea life.

‘El Cielo Cozumel Tours’ is a family-owned business…

The Robinson family just relaxing at El Cielo Cozumel during a snorkeling tour.

Hi … my name is Alberto Novelo and I and my close family have been providing snorkeling tours in Cozumel for well over 20 years .

During that time, we have delighted multiple thousands of snorkelers, many of whom return again and again and have become firm friends.

What’s more, because this is a family business – not staffed by disinterested employees – every single member of my family is dedicated to making your snorkeling trip a memory you will cherish.

Snorkeling or Not - You'll enjoy the ride on our Glass-Bottomed Boats with plenty of Shade, Seating & Drinks…

Carolyn and her party snorkeling in shallow waters and following the guide's instructions.

As part of our Premium Service our Boats are all Glass-Bottomed with ample shade and plenty of comfortable seating...

So if you can’t swim (or simply don’t want to get wet) you will still enjoy the glorious sights in the crystal clear tropical waters below the boat from the comfort of your seat, shaded from the sun, with a cold drink at your elbow.

And if you are planning on snorkeling, then, during the short trip to the reefs, our guide will demonstrate exactly how to use the snorkeling equipment and how to snorkel for maximum comfort and safety.

Absolutely no overcrowding – ever!

So determined are we to ensure you enjoy the best possible experience on this wonderful day, we strictly limit our 22 person capacity boats to a maximum of 12 passengers.

This means we can give each and every one of you the personal attention you deserve as our VIP guests, particularly if this is your first time swimming underwater.

We saw another boat with over 20 people and I was relieved to be on a trip that was more attentive and organized"

Alberto was a great guide, very positive, funny, energetic and a great diver. He pointed out stingrays, conches, sea cucumbers, starfish, and many types of colorful fish.

The water is gorgeous and the reefs are amazing.

Pancho was a skilled boat driver.

We saw another boat with over 20 people on the snorkel trip and I was relieved to be on a trip that was more attentive and organized.

Alberto also sent me pics from the trip since I did not bring an underwater camera. I recommend bringing an underwater camera since there is so much to see.

I wouldn't hesitate to book a trip with these guys again! Thank you! Highly recommended!

What’s more, if you are a party of 10 or more, you can get a…

FREE upgrade to a ‘Private Boat Tour For Your Group Only’

Because I’ll be delighted to give you a FREE upgrade to a totally private boat tour where you’ll enjoy all the facilities and comforts of our standard PREMIUM boats – with the added benefit that you won’t be sharing your boat with anyone else.

You can also choose to start your trip at your desired time rather than the regular start time of 9:30 am. or 10:30am

There is no extra charge for this – you simply have to select 10+ passengers when making your booking online. And you'll get the Private Tour automatically.

Four important things …

Michelle and her brother enjoying a snorkeling time in El Cielo.

  • We are a family run and staffed business - and thus so far more interested in making your day wonderful in a way no employee could ever manage.
  • We are one of the elite few tour companies authorized to visit the most stunning reefs, which are located inside the protected area of the Cozumel Marine Park . That is Palancar Garden Reef, Colombia Shallow Reef, and the famous El Cielo sandbar.
  • Although our boats are designed to safely transport 22 people, we set a limit of 12 passengers, so we can give every one of our VIP guests a five star service and they have ample room to relax on our comfortable seating, which is carefully shaded for your maximum comfort.
  • We not only allow you to bring your infants, aged one and upwards, we also allow your children aged 3 and upwards to snorkel. They must all be supervised by one of your party at all time, however, a member of our crew will also be close at hand when under the water for extra safety.

First Time Snorkeling, so we were a bit nervous - But from the moment we stepped on Alberto's boat all apprehensions vanished"

As it was the first time we’d snorkeled, we were a bit nervous. But from the moment we stepped on his boat, all apprehensions subsided.

Such a caring, fun and upbeat crew to be with on his boat. Laughter was constant and drinks were plentiful! Alberto and his crew consistently ensured that we were comfortable, laughing and well taken care of.

Another crew member was constantly taking pictures so that we could solely enjoy the snorkeling experience.

El Cielo Tours was great in every way. Their website, their responsiveness, and especially the owner/guide Alberto, who was just outstanding.

Even if this is your First Time Snorkeling, YOU will enjoy an Extraordinary Adventure that few other excursions can match!

And if you are planning on snorkeling for the first time, our English speaking guide will demonstrate exactly how to use the snorkeling equipment and how to snorkel for maximum comfort and safety, during the short trip to the reefs.

Unlike many snorkeling companies operating out of Cozumel, we supply a brand new snorkel tube, free of charge, for your exclusive use.

So you can be confident that you – AND ONLY YOU – will have had this tube in your mouth. After your trip we carefully dispose of every tube in a totally eco-friendly way.

I just want to say what a great time we had with Alberto and his crew.

The weather was fantastic and the water just as amazing as I remembered from last year.

This was one friend’s first time snorkeling, so Pancho stayed with her the whole time and made sure she was safe.

We saw a shark, ray and sea turtle among a lot of other beautiful fish.

At El Cielo the guacamole was delicious as were the Coronas. I totally recommend this if you like to snorkel and have a great time.

These guys definitely live up to the reviews on Trip Advisor.

We arrived in Cozumel and literally just walked 50 yards to our meeting point where these guys were waiting on us.

Pancho, and Alberto did a wonderful job as our guides. We saw sea turtles, many tropical fish and even a baby shark.

After snorkeling, we headed to the one of the most beautiful natural swimming pools on earth, El Cielo, for a pleasantly relaxing time with drinks and fresh guacamole dip made by Pancho and Alberto.

I will definitely recommend to family and friends a future excursion to Cozumel.

Thank you Pancho!

The CLOCK IS TICKING

As I’ve already mentioned, access to the fragile ecosystems that make up the protected Cozumel Marine Park is severely limited.

Paul amazed by a starfish he found snorkeling in El Cielo Cozumel.

Despite this, the eco-friendly nature of our high end glass-bottomed boats, fully equipped with shading and comfortable seating for 22 qualify us to operate ONLY 3 boats.

However, despite being licensed to take 22 passengers, we restrict most parties to 12 so you enjoy maximum comfort and close personal attention at all times, particularly when snorkeling. It’s almost like a private charter.

So, between our 3 boats, we can take a total of 36 passengers.

And, because we are one of very few businesses able to provide the highest quality snorkeling experience and most of our clients come from the cruise ships, bringing in around 20,000 cruise visitors daily - we tend to get booked up lightening fast for every day of the week.

So you now have to come to a fast decision

You can either pause and take ages to ‘think about it’ only to come back later and be dismayed to see your choice of day has been taken.

That means, if you only have that one day for your trip, you’ll either have to forgo the trip entirely or have to settle for a second rate trip which will NOT include the marine life rich reefs of Palancar Gardens and Colombia Shallow Reefs plus the beach party on the beautiful ‘El Cielo’ sandbar.

Instead, you will have to make do with the relatively barren reefs that most tour companies visit which were not considered spectacular enough to be part of the ecology-rich Marine Park that we are licensed to visit.

Larae and her brothers very happy taking a snorkeling tour.

What’s more, the general tourist area is not protected like the Marine Park, so there is a quite marked difference in the quality and quantity of the marine life.

And the chances are high you will be crammed onto a boat (that might not even have a glass bottom) with 20 or more other folks, severely limiting your enjoyment and perhaps you’ll struggle to understand your guide’s broken English.

Mattie amazed by the colorful fish she found in a reef near to El Cielo Cozumel.

You can make the smart move and decide right now which day you want to become the memory of a lifetime by booking our El Cielo Snorkeling Tour that visits the awesome Cozumel Marine Park with its spectacular marine life and finishes in a setting to die for – the aptly named ‘Heaven On Earth’.

Then, once you’ve made your booking, you’ll experience a wonderful feeling of calm, because you’ll know you’ve made the right choice.

So you can relax and look forward to that magical moment when you step onto our boat.

I and all my family are eagerly looking forward to welcoming you to Cozumel and showing you our wonderful Marine Park first hand!

But, despite enjoying our fair share of the very limited licenses empowering us to enter the beautiful protected area of the Cozumel Marine Park, we often have difficulty coping with all the bookings from the 20,000 cruise passengers that arrive in Cozumel daily.

I’d bitterly regret it if – now you know what a wonderland the Marine Park is – your hesitation in booking means you are denied the full experience only a PREMIUM snorkeling service like ours can provide and you have to settle for second best.

So I strongly suggest you check the availability on your chosen day - RIGHT NOW – and then go ahead and book your seats before it's too late.

I’ll leave the last words to Michelle Johnson …

When you get back you want to go back out the next day!"

Alberto provides an excursion like few others. He takes care of the details so you enjoy a carefree day of snorkeling and basking in the clear blue waters off Cozumel.

So, if you are looking for relaxation and the chance to see things you only imagine or see on TV this is your guide.

Alberto makes it fun and when you get back you want to go back out the next day...with Alberto... Enjoy the trip. Can't tell you all we saw but we saw a lot including a nurse shark and sea turtles.

Our meeting point is at the Motor Lobby of El Cid La Ceiba Hotel and you will receive full directions to there with the confirmation of your booking.

We set off at 9.30 am seven days a week and the tour last approximately four and a half hours.

However, if your party has a minimum of ten people, we can make a special trip, by prior arrangement, if you prefer at 1.30 pm any day of the week.

All three of our top quality glass-bottomed boats have a capacity of 22 passengers, but to guarantee your total comfort and personal attention we rarely exceed 12 passengers.

That ensures you have a wide choice of seating and you receive personal attention at all times.

But this does mean we get booked up very quickly.

So booking your seats without delay is the best way to be certain of securing your trip of a lifetime.

You can check our website at any time, night or day, and get a constantly updated completely accurate picture of our availability.

But please note, that can change in a heartbeat.

So – if you see a slot you want – book it right away. Because, with 80% of our bookings coming from the 20,000 daily cruise visitors, available slots tend to disappear as fast as a puddle in the desert.

As you are coming by cruise ship, please remember there will be plenty of other folks all trying to disembark at the same time as you. So pick a departure time at least 30 MINUTES AFTER you are supposed to dock to allow for the delays in embarkation.

You will need to catch a ferry at least ONE HOUR BEFORE our scheduled departure time. Bear in mind our meeting point is about a mile from the Ferry Pier, which is where you will arrive on Cozumel.

You will receive full directions with your emailed booking confirmation.

NO. Unlike other tour companies, the cost of your disposable one time use snorkel tube plus the Marine Park entry fee and the beach party meal of freshly prepared guacamole, salsa, french fries and drinks are all provided, with our compliments, free of extra charge.

NO. This is one expense you will have to carry, because it would not be fair to the roughly 80% of our clients who only have a 50 yard walk to our meeting point if we were to add the cost of your ferry trip to our prices.

NO. This is one expense you will have to carry, because it would not be fair to the roughly 80% of our clients who only have a 50 yard walk to our meeting point if we were to add the cost of your taxi fare to our prices.

In that very rare event, we would immediately issue you with a full refund.

U.S. News Insider Tip : If you’re staying in Playa del Carmen and want to see Cozumel's incredible reefs, you can easily plan a day trip to Cozumel. Ferries travel between these destinations throughout the day, and the ride only takes around 45 minutes each way. – Holly D. Johnson

No trip to Cozumel is complete without a boat ride (or two) around the island's magnificently blue waters. Whether you hop on board to scuba dive through some of Cozumel's magnificent reefs or to simply take in the scenery during a sunset sail, most travelers agree that chartering a boat is worth the time and money.

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park Punta Sur Eco Beach Park

If you're a wildlife lover, a trip to the Punta Sur Eco Park is a must. This ecological park sprawls across the southern tip of Cozumel. Its 2,500 acres are home to some incredible animals worth seeing if you have a chance, including exotic birds, crocodiles and sea turtles. But don't let the animals distract you from everything else the park has to offer. Take some time to explore the park's Celarain Lighthouse , which houses a small maritime museum that details the history of the Maya, as well as pirates and corsairs that once frequented the area. You can also book a catamaran tour of the Colombia lagoon.

Recent visitors said that the beach park offers a great mix of history and nature situated in a beautiful spot. The white sands and peaceful atmosphere of the beach are just about perfect, according to most visitors.

Palancar Beach Palancar Beach free

Palancar Beach, one of the best all-around beach spots on Cozumel, is especially acclaimed for its water sports, including kayaking, snorkeling, sailing and diving. You can rent a dive charter and then grab some grub at the nearby restaurants and bars. Travelers especially recommend Playa Palancar Beach Club for cruise patrons looking to escape a pre-planned excursion for a more authentic experience.

Travelers also described the offshore Palancar Gardens and Palancar Reef as excellent spots for divers of all skill levels. Even if you're an experienced diver, it's recommended you rent a charter to avoid the hassle of permits or licensing. While swimmers are allowed to dive on their own, we recommend that you hire local experts who are familiar with the diving terrain. Fortunately, many recent travelers say they saw plenty of tropical fish and marine life in the area including stingrays, sharks and starfish.

Paradise Beach is a popular beach on the western side of the island. Families, couples, locals and tourists – plus plenty of cruise ship passengers – flock to this beach, so prepare for crowds. This pristine shoreline boasts soft sand, turquoise waters, a pool, a restaurant and shopping (you can pick up a bathing suit, sandals and other beach necessities at three stores along the shore). For $10, you're granted access to all the facilities, as well as a chair by the beach or the pool, and for about $18, you can purchase a Fun Pass to use all the inflatable water toys, water trampolines, iceberg climb, kayaks, snorkeling gear and stand-up paddleboards. Poolside and beachside food and beverage service is also offered with a $10 minimum. There are also all-inclusive day passes available that include food and drinks as part of the package price and cost $67 for adults, $47 for youth ages 12 to 17 and $41 for children ages 5 to 11. Kids 4 and younger play free.

Recent visitors said that Paradise Beach was an enjoyable way to spend the day, especially because it was void of people hawking their goods and services. Others remarked that the staff is friendly and helpful, while others were pleased with the clean facilities.

Stingray Beach Stingray Beach

A visit to Stingray Beach will provide the same interactive experience as scuba diving, just without the heavy gear (or price tags). Located in San Miguel, this facility allows you to get up close with these undersea creatures, providing ample opportunities to swim among them. And don't worry about getting stung: The rays' barbs are clipped, so the animals can't hurt you.

Recent visitors couldn't get enough of the experience, describing the rays as beautiful and mellow, and the staff as respectful of the animals and reassuring to the humans. You can pet and even “kiss” the stingrays during the tour, which is accessible directly from the shore so you don’t have to board a boat or spend any travel time getting to the site. Also note that Stingray Beach offers chocolate tasting, mezcal and tequila tasting and other activities for people in your group.

U.S. News Insider Tip : If you're planning a day at this beach club (or another) during a cruise stop in Cozumel, avoid booking through your ship. You can take a taxi to most beaches in Cozumel, and you’ll have more time to spend there when you travel independently.  – Holly D. Johnson

Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is another beach club that offers day passes to vacationers. This beach club offers a beautiful shoreline with plenty of space and powder white sand. Visitors can relax the day away on a chair with their own umbrella. The beach park also features an overwater play area and obstacle course, which can keep kids busy for hours while wearing them out. You'll also have access to a hydro-massage tub, water cannons and pedal boats.

Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park

Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park is the second-largest coral reef in the world and is home to a range of marine flora as well as incredible animals like rays (from December to March), sharks, turtles and starfish. You'll want to visit this reef by boat and with the help of a professional guide.

Many tour companies take tourists out to the reef for snorkeling and diving trips, including top-rated providers like Cancun Adventures and Fury Catamarans , and past visitors heartily recommend taking advantage. In fact, many travelers rave about the clear waters and their encounters with healthy and thriving corals, sea turtles and lobsters. However, some past visitors have said that some Cozumel hotels aren’t far from the reef, including Iberostar Cozumel, so you can do some snorkeling from the shore.

El Museo de la Isla de Cozumel (Cozumel Island Museum) El Museo de la Isla de Cozumel (Cozumel Island Museum)

If you want to learn more about Cozumel's history, check out this excellent museum in downtown San Miguel, which received a full renovation in 2019. The Museo de la Isla de Cozumel (Cozumel Island Museum), a former luxury hotel, features a total of 11 interactive exhibits that showcase everything from the island's ecosystems, local development and conservation issues to old Mayan and Spanish colonial artifacts. The museum also displays the more recent history of Cozumel, with exhibits on the area's 20th-century cultural and economic development.

Travelers particularly enjoyed the museum for the chance to learn the island's history, while still leaving time for the beach and water sports. Several reviewers also appreciated the temporary exhibit rooms, which have displayed the work of local and international artists, as well as the history of Carnaval celebrations on the island. Recent visitors said you should be able to see everything within an hour or two, so you'll still have plenty of time left in your day to do other things.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cruise Excursions In Cozumel

Got questions? Don’t worry, we’ve got the answers to the most frequently asked questions about cruise excursions in Cozumel.

What do I wear on a cruise excursion in Cozumel?

What you wear is going to depend on your particular excursion. If you’re going to the beach you’ll need a swimsuit and coverup, sandals, and maybe snorkel gear. If you’re exploring ancient ruins or taking an ATV or Jeep tour you’ll want comfortable, light clothing, and comfortable closed-toed shoes.

You definitely want to remember sunglasses, and/or a hat, and sunscreen. If you’re going in the ocean, you need to have reef-safe sunscreen , meaning it does not contain Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, or Octocrylene, among other ingredients. Just because the label says “reef-safe” it does not mean that it is. Instead, opt for a mineral sunscreen, like Blue Lizard , Thinksport, or Sun Bum Mineral .

Remember to also pack any necessary personal items, such as a camera, insect repellent, and any medications you may need. It’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast for the day of your excursion to ensure you’re prepared for any changes in weather conditions.

Is Cozumel a good place to cruise to?

Cozumel is a fantastic place to cruise to, with SO many options for activities. You can explore Mayan ruins, lounge on gorgeous beaches, snorkel in crystal clear waters, eat at authentic restaurants, go shopping in a variety of stores, and so much more. It has some of the best snorkel and scuba diving spots in all of Mexico, and has access to the second longest coral reef system in the world.

Do I need to bring my passport with me on an excursion in Cozumel?

No, we do not recommend bringing your passport with you off the cruise ship when you are taking a shore excursion in Cozumel. Instead, we recommend taking photos of your passport with your phone, and keeping your passport in your room safe.

Do I need pesos on an excursion in Cozumel?

You’ll be able to use US dollars in Cozumel, but any change you receive will be in pesos. You also may get a better deal when using pesos, as the exchange rate can fluctuate, so it’s a far better idea to exchange currency into pesos before you arrive in Cozumel.

Do you tip on cruise excursions in Cozumel?

Yes, it is customary to tip your tour guides on Cozumel cruise excursions. Generally, it’s recommended to tip between 10-20% of the cost of the excursion, depending on length of tour and quality of service.

The Top 11 Shore Excursions From Cozumel

Cozumel is by far one of the most popular destinations in cruising. Not only does it offer two large piers that can accommodate multiple cruise ships each day, but passengers also seem to love the port, according to our recent survey results .

And what’s not to love about a tropical island set right in the middle of turquoise-blue water? Plus, whether you want to eat great food, relax on the beach, or experience adventure sports like diving, fishing, or off-roading, Cozumel has you covered.

In fact, there are so many thing you can do on the island that it can be downright overwhelming. It’s not unusual to have 50-60 options in the shore excursions offered by your cruise line. That said, there are definitely some tours that are better than others.

To help narrow down the list, we’ve rounded up what we think are some of the most interesting excursions you can take in Cozumel. These represents just a fraction of the things you can do during your trip, but definitely highlight some great options.

We’ve also included links to book your trip with Viator, part of the well-known TripAdvisor.com family. This way, no matter which cruise line you sail you can book through Viator and go on the excursion, even if your cruise line doesn’t offer it. (Note: You can also check your specific cruise line to see what excursions they offer in Cozumel.

Atlantis Submarine Expedition

Cozumel Atlantis sub

Great for those people who want to see the beauty of Cozumel’s water and aquatic life without having to get wet. This submarine gives you an underwater view (up to 100 feet deep) of the island’s protected wildlife park Chankanaab. The excursion takes about two hours, including a 40-minute sub ride. One reviewer raved, “Wow…..all we can say was this was definitely worth the money to take this tour. If you are not a diver, taking this submarine down to the reef was just an amazing way to see the ocean life down below.”

Dive & Drive Cozumel Adventure

Always wanted to dive but you aren’t certified? Here’s your chance. This unique tour is great for first-time divers as it includes initial dive training, followed by a shallow water dive alongside a pro dive instructor. But this tour is way more than just diving. It also includes an island tour in your own four-seater VW Beetle convertible. There is no more unique way to explore the island on a tour than driving one of these classics. Tour takes about five hours, so it fits in perfectly with the cruise schedule, allowing you some time afterward to shop or relax on the beach.

Cozumel Food Tour

Cozumel food tour

If you are into food, then take advantage of Cozumel’s great restaurant offerings. This three-hour tour will take you to five different restaurants on the island. We like that they also hit home-cooked food in a concina economica, a traditional family-run restaurant. And with only only eight people allowed on a tour, you aren’t going to be shuffling along with some massive group. You’ll get a chance to really experience the best of what the island has to offer.

ATV Jungle and Snorkel Combo

Cozumel ATV tour

When you see Cozumel, you may not realize that much of the island is still covered in mysterious jungle. This tour will give you the best way to explore that jungle — you own four-wheel ATV. During your jungle ride you will be taken to Mayan ruins on the island, followed by a swim in a natural cenote. Finally, you’ll finish the day at the Dzul Ha Beach Club where you can hang out on the beach, swim, snorkel, and eat some lunch before heading back to town after your four-hour tour.

Cozumel Snorkeling Tour

Snorkeling is a major reason to visit Cozumel and if you want to hit the best spots in one day, then this tour is for you. Over the span of about four hours you will hit for different reefs around the island, including the Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo reefs. And because the reefs are active with wildlife, expect to see colorful fish, rays, and even turtles. After your tour, you’ll have access to a beach club to relax before you head back to the ship.

Personal Sub Dive Tour

Personal submarines

Imagine flying around underwater in your own personal submarine. This isn’t science fiction. These personal submarines glide along under the waves, giving you the experience of a free dive while having plenty of air and freedom of movement. While the tour only last about an hour, you’ll be talking about it for years.

Apart from Chichen Itza, no Mayan ruins are more famous than Tulum’s cliffside city. This six-hour tour will take you from Cozumel to the mainland, then head south to the ruins. Once there, you’ll have a fully guided tour with ample time to explore this “lost” city and take plenty of photos. Tour includes lunch and the ferry back and forth from Cozumel and Playa del Carmen. For $75 per person, we consider this one of the best values for excursions.

Extreme Off-Road Adventure

Offroading

There’s taking a trip down a well-worn path… and then there is blazing down that path in an all-terrain buggy like you will on this excursion. Drive your own Xrail car, making your way through the jungle. Expect to get muddy! This tour takes you to Jade Caverns where you can explore some of the local geological scenery, as well as take a dip in the (fresh) water. As one tourist put it, “We had a fun ride, got absolutely covered in mud, held alligators, checked out an old Mayan cave, swam in a freshwater cavern, and swam in a bat cave.” Count us in.

Amazing Race Tour

Are you a fan of the Amazing Race television show, where contestants have to explore a foreign place, solve puzzles, and embrace the local culture in challenges? Cozumel has it’s own version, where you and your team will not only compete, but also get a chance to see some of the island’s best sights. The race takes about 4.5 hours and gives a prize to the winner.

My husband booked the snorkel excursion for me, my dad and himself. He put down a deposit of $54 dollars. The day before my kids got a really bad bacteria skin infection and couldn't go to the ships daycare. So my husband had to stay behind. We followed the instructions on where to go depending on where your boat docks. We were on royal Caribbean and they docked at a pier they don't usually dock at. This was due to the other dock was full. This company has our boat name information, they asked for it ahead of time. They could've asked the people working at the ports where our boat docked. So we docked at a different dock but in their print out instructions they tell you where to meet depending on your dock. So we go to the hooters they said to be at. We were there about 20 minutes early. When it was our tour time and no Carla we got a little worried. Then it was 30 minutes past our start of tour. We emailed them and tried to call, nothing. Thankfully the lady behind us happen to have Carla's personal number. So she called her. A guy showed up to pick us up about 15 minutes later. He informed us that the tour already. So he takes us to the dock and told us they have a shorter snorkeling tour that's $36 each. So I said ok since we already paid 54 it would be just $20 more. He said yes. So we said we'd do it since we didn't know what else to do and so much time passed. We got to the dock and Carla met us there. She was very very rude to us. She told us it was our fault we weren't at the dock we usually dock at. Somehow it's our fault we didn't dock at the normal spot. She didn't want to give out deposit because because we husband couldn't go. Said it's not her problem. She tried to get more money out of my dad and I. I couldn't believe she tried to blame us because we didn't dock at the normal spot. Even though we followed the instructions to where to go from our dock. The guy that drove us told Carla it was fine for us to just give $20 more. She was mad. Totally unprofessional lady. So rude and will just leave you and take your money. Our driver was very nice. I can't remember his name I think it started with a F. Our snorkel guide I believe Katie was very nice too. We also snorkel with a family that said they too weren't picked up at their hotel. They had to call and call to figure out what was going on. I know Carla is the lady in charge so this review is to her and her rude attitude and no apologies for not picking us up. Even though we did everything right and followed her instructions for the dock our boat went too.

I took the open bus tour and beach club bs with Raul. the bus ride was great, because you were able to see the other side of the island that is preserved. the Beach Club is a total bull shit. you get taken like a prisoner to this compound, where the waiter was rude, the food sucked, and was super expensive, and you are surrounded by people trying to sell stuff. shame on those people to peddle you off in such a manner. The tequila and show was fun, but here again you are being sold things non stop. I was pushed so hard ended up buying a necklace for 130 which after looking at it, a few more times do not think is worth much. I wonder how much Raul's family gets paid to bring tourists to this so called Beach Club, and the tequila place to be sold things. also, the beach was rough and you could not swim. there were much better beaches on that side of the island. so save your money.

We booked the snorkeling tour for 6 people we payed partial online and we were going to place the rest with card. The captain/ Carla harassed us and embarrassed us in front of everyone in the boat because because we had a card payment. Carla "the owner"is very rude arrogant and not understanding towards her Clients. Do not recommend this company worse experience ever we all felt so embarrassed because they made us feel like thief's and ruined out vacations. We were going to reserve two other excursion over $1,000 dollars with them but decided to booked with other companies instead do not Book with them all CARLA cares about is the money and not her customers .

Cozumel cruise excursions was a great experience! We arrived at the meeting location and the driver got there exactly on time. Once we made it out onto the boat, our tour guide Angel and the captain Jose were great! We made 4 stops to 3 different reefs (one of them twice) and had so much fun in the water! Plenty of drinks on board and they even served us fresh guacamole during a break. This is the way to go for your snorkeling experience in Cozumel! Great price too!

What a nightmare! Supposed to meet at 10:30am. Got to obscure meet up location 15 min early... no carla. TRIED CALLING # on email/invoice and it isnt a working #. Had a tour guide who knew her REAL # call her to say we were waiting. At 11 carla shows up to take everyones cash and says we showed up late. Nope! She gathered everyone up that was waiting on her. we Didn't go to the MARINA via van, we WALKED blocks to a random hotel lobby and boarded a crowded boat 22ppl ttl! 11:30 boat leaves.... 45 min into boat ride, STOPPED BY MARINA POLICE CARRYING AK47's and taking pics of everyone on board. No joke. Detained because our captain didnt hv correct papers! Only tiny btld waters on board while we waited. No alcohol or food (thats only after the snorkel trip is over ) Police boat Escorted us back to the marina we SHOULD hv departed from & we had to get off... no snorkeling and no time to go back out on another boat. Carla refunded $$ and asked us not to leave a bad review. Really? Offered to take us out for a quick snorkel outside marina if we wanted but no time to go to the good places. We declined and she tried to squeeze everyone into a tiny van. When we didnt fit, she put the rest of us in an employees car who dropped us at hotel we started at. Carla said they knew her there, she'd already paid for us and we could hang out at the all inclusive... we went into hotel and they said they did NOT know carla and we could NOT stay!!! Only giving 2 stars because of carlas kind apology and the quick refund. Day was a total bust!!

Could not have been a better excursion! ASK FOR ISRAEL! I hunted for a good deal and something different for my one day in Cozumel and the reviews for this company sold me as well as the variety of tours they offer! My sister and I both opted for private jeep tours and arriving in the rain! (ugh) in port was a bit worrisome- but no need! We were met by George and waited for our guide- Israel who met us with the jeep! George ended up being my sister and her families guide! There is a loop of the island with various stops so you get more done in the time allotted- about 5 1/2 hours. First stop was the Tequila tasting- which I honestly was not interested in- but Israel told me I couldn't come to Mexico and not try it! I was not the Tequila I know and hate- nope- completely different! Lower alcohol content and smoother! Why? Because apparently true Tequila is only made in one region of Mexico and from Blue Agave harvested at 10 years. And you can only get it in- you guessed it- Mexico. The crap we buy here in the states? Crap! lol. Next up- beach side on the Ocean side of the island- which has no electric and is tons of natural beach and wetlands! Across from the beach were a few shopping huts- tourist traps- but the lady who tracked us down on the beach to come shop- she got a sale! lol. Then it was back in the jeep and off to the Eco Beach- Lighthouse and Museum! Did I mention the cooler of beer and water for us to enjoy? This was about when we cracked into that! Now- unlike other jeep tours you can book through your cruise ship- this one is private. What I mean is- when you book through the ship- you are caravaning with you closest 10 jeeps full of people! And if you may even ride in the jeep with other vacationers! Such a caravan passed us while were were at the beach- and when we arrived at the entrance to the Eco Park- they were lined up waiting for their guides to get everyone their wrist bands- we cruised off to the other line and Israel already had our wrist bands on us! A few quick words and we were in! He joked that the other company didn't like him because he was always prepared and in faster than them! AKA- we beat the crowd to the lighthouse! We hiked to the top and enjoyed stunning views and then proceeded to the Maritime Museum where once again- Israel gave us some historic details and then left us to enjoy at our own pace! Then off to the Westside of the island for lunch and snorkeling! Again- Israel was on top on everything and called in our order so the food came out just minutes after we sat down! That's some serious service! After lunch we geared up and once again Israel was our snorkeling guide too! He does it all! This was my favorite part of the day! My sister- she made similar stops but at a few different vendors- so we passed them, but didn't bump into them! Added to the personal tour- while I would've enjoyed lunch with them- our beach club had the perk of snorkeling pictures! At the Tortugas beach club! My one tip- take plenty of cash for purchases and make sure to tip this amazing guide!

cozumel excursion photos

After pouring over reviews for things to do on our recent cruise we decided to take a jeep tour of Cozumel. It seemed like a good way to see a lot of the island and maybe do something a little different than a day at the beach. This way I could actually say I "visited" Cozumel. We made a reservation and set off on our cruise. As the best laid plans often go awry, our cruise had a medical emergency onboard and our ship was re-routed which resulted in our itinerary changing. All of the non-Carnival excursions were cancelled as we were now arriving on a date that we didn't have a reservation for. The day we arrived in Cozumel we decided to stop by and ask if they might be able to accommodate us and explained the situation. A quick phone call was made and within 10 minutes a jeep pulled up with our driver for the day and we were on our way to a day of fun! Our driver was delightful, his English was almost flawless and my husband, who is bilingual. enjoyed speaking Spanish with him while he spoke English with us. The company has a basic plan of action for the day, they present it and you can change anything you wish. They start you off on a jeep (you need to drive it to the outskirts of town and then the driver takes over due to politics). You are given a cooler with water bottles and beer and informed that there is open container approval for the tourists and off you go! We followed their basic recommendations which were to go tequila tasting and see how tequila is made (warning, you're gonna get tipsy! LOL); head across the island to the quieter other side to see and play in the ocean (there was a roadstand there where you could purchase items or get a massage), visit Punta Sur (admission included) and climb the lighthouse, visit a tiny ruin and see a lagoon (sadly, no crocs there that day) and stop for an authentic Mexican lunch which was delicious. We enjoyed our day, our driver (who I apologize, I have forgotten his name) and would do it again as we didn't begin to have visited all the places one could visit during this cruise stop.

We booked a private jeep tour with this company for my family of 4 and we had a wonderful experience. Our tour guide MIGUEL was very polite and respectful. He was able to promptly made some accommodations for us which we thought was great. The tour was informative and Miguel seemed very knowledgeable of the island because he was born and raised in Cozumel. The tour was very flexible to our schedule and we made a few stops to see some of the important parts of the island. They also provided with some drinks and food, all of this for a very reasonable price! I don't usually write reviews but this company and Miguel deserve the exception :) Highly recommend to take this awesome tour.

The trip was really awesome. We had Manuel as the tour guide. They were late, but made up for it in service. He was very safety conscious. Explained everything well. The only thing I would've changed as first time snorkelers was explain how to clear your mask and breathing tube. Trial by fire learning experience. The places were awesome. Very beautiful. Near the end of the trip. They made some guacamole. Which was very good and needed. I highly recommend this snorkeling tour. 2 thumbs up.

We never actually got to take our dune buggy tour because of COVID 19. When our cruise was cancelled, I emailed CCE. They offered me a 10% discount or full refund of our deposit. I initially took the 10 % discount with NO expiration date. However, as the Shelter in Place order seemed to go on forever and I still have no idea if travel outside the US will be permitted, I emailed them a third time and asked for a refund. When they had difficulty with the PayPal sight, they emailed me back and told me to contact PayPal. They responded to every email I sent, and there were at least 4 and agreed to a full refund. If and when I can get to Cozumel, I will definitely schedule a tour with them. Excellent customer service and no fears of being taken for a ride.

Ultimate Guide to the Cozumel Cruise Port and Breakdown of Shore Excursion Options

PIctures from Shore Excursions in the Cozumel Cruise Port, Mexico

If you’re booking any type of Western Caribbean cruise, there is a very good chance that it’s going to stop at the Cozumel cruise port. In fact, it’s such a popular destination that Cozumel has space to dock as many as 8 cruise ships each day. There are 3 separate piers for the boats to dock at. The northern most pier has 2 spaces and is located closest to the downtown area. There are also two piers that are located further south. These two piers are located in a port-area and can hold up to 6 different cruise ships. If you’re like us and tend to cruise on Carnival, then you will most likely be at the Southern-most pier which is right next to the Three Amigos restaurant.

There is absolutely no reason to worry about cruising to Cozumel. I believe it is perfect for a beginner’s cruise port. It’s tropical, it’s warm, it’s safe, and everyone speaks English so you won’t have any trouble getting around.

Map of Cozumel

Cozumel is a small island off the eastern coast of Mexico. To help plan, I’ve included two maps, one close-up of Cozumel and one with some of the shore excursions that you can do on the mainland of Mexico.

Shore Excursions and DIY Options for Cozumel:

I’ve been to Cozumel three times. Once I took a Carnival cruise ship excursion and two times I did different DIY Options. I’ll go over my experiences in each, but first a summary of what you can expect in terms of Shore Excursion Options:

The cruise lines offer about 50-60 shore excursion options. I would break them down into the following categories.

  • Mexican Cultural/Historical Sites  (Chichen Itza, Tulum, San Gervasio)
  • Mexico’s Natural Wonders (Cenotes, Underground Rivers)
  • Mexican Ecological Parks (Xel-Ha, Xcaret, Xplor, Xenses)

Typical Cruise Water Activities & Beach Breaks

One of the main things that you should consider when looking at Cozumel shore excursions is time, Cozumel is a little island off the main land of Mexico. Almost every activity that is located on the main land requires you to take a ferry to Playa del Carmen. The ferry ride significantly cuts into the amount of time that you get to spend having fun. Yes, really. So make sure you read the fine print to know what you are signing up for.

Cozumel is also a great port to DIY. I’ve got two different, inexpensive options if you want to skip the shore excursion and go exploring by yourself!

Mexican Cultural/ Historical Sites:

Chichen itza.

The main cultural site for the Yucatan is Chichen Itza. If you’ve never been and you like ruins, I cannot recommend this site enough. It’s stunning! But I’ll be honest with you, is Cozumel the best way to see Chichen Itza? That depends! Chichen Itza is about 8 hours round-trip from Cozumel and only allows for about 45 minutes on site (which is not much at all since it’s a whole complex). So if Cozumel is the closest you will ever get to Chichen Itza and you’re cool with long bus rides, then go for it. But if you think you may find yourself staying on the Riviera Maya at some point in the future, or visiting one of the closer cruise ports (Progresso or Costa Maya), then I’d hold off on this one. We stayed at an all-inclusive in Puerto Aventuras and took a day-trip to Chichen Itza and had enough time to swim in a Cenote as well! You can read all about it here.

Note: If you’re feeling really fancy, some cruises offer an airplane excursion to visit Chichen Itza!

cozumel excursion photos

Tulum is another popular Mayan Ruin, which in my opinion is easier to see when staying on the Riviera Maya and not just visiting Cozumel for the day. That being said, Tulum is slightly closer to Cozumel than Chichen Itza and it’s located on a beach, so you have about 1.5 hours to walk around the complex and to enjoy the beautiful beach. Tulum is much closer to Costa Maya’s Cruise Port, so that may also be an option for you.

cozumel excursion photos

San Gervasio

Much less popular, these Mayan ruins are actually located on the island of Cozumel and only require about a half-day to visit. We’ve never had the opportunity to visit these lesser known ruins but would love to hear in the comments about your experience!

Mexico’s Natural Wonders:

In terms of natural wonders, only one phenomenon really comes to mind when I’m thinking about Mexico – Cenotes. Cenotes are giant sinkholes caused by weaknesses in the limestone underground that fill up with water. There are cenotes all throughout the Yucatan peninsula. Many of these are open to the public for swimming and there’s at least one that features a restaurant.

We were able to visit a cenote when we went on our excursion to Chichen Itza. The Ik Kil cenote is about 200 ft across and 130 feet deep with a stairway that winds all the way to the water swimming platform (85 ft.) The water is chilly which is unsurprising because there isn’t a lot of sunlight that gets into the bottom of the cave. It was a lot of fun visiting and the vines hanging down are really neat.

Unfortunately the cruise ship excursions from Cozumel don’t stop at the Ik Kil cenote because there isn’t enough time.If you want to visit a cenote your best bet is is to look at some of the underground river tours. For example, Carnival offers an “Amazing Secret River” tour which takes you to the Mexico mainland to the Rio Secreto Nature Reserve where you get to explore underground caves and swim in a cenote. If you’ve done one of these underground river tours, we would love to hear about it in the comments below!

cozumel excursion photos

Mexican Ecological Parks:

One unique feature in Mexico is a group of Ecological parks. Xel-Ha, Xcaret, Xplor, and Xenses are separate parks, so you would have to choose just one for your day. We have only visited Xel-Ha so far. Xel-Ha is essentially a natural water-park. It features a lazy-river which is a real river, a zip-line, cenotes to swim in, and several animal encounters. Each park costs roughly $100 admission, but many of the park’s activities require additional cash. We had a great day and even paid extra to do the Sea Trek which lets you walk on the ocean floor with helmets on to breathe.

One of the negative things that I have heard about the Ecological Parks excursions is just the time it takes to get to the park. All three are located on the mainland and the travel time getting from the cruise ship to the park significantly cuts into your time spent at the park. We thoroughly enjoyed our day at Xel-Ha (although we visited from an all-inclusive in Puerto Aventuras) and we cannot wait to visit the other parks.

Summary of the Different Parks:

Each of these parks is quite different and it’s hard to tell the differences upfront. Here’s my take on what you can expect from each park:

  • Xel-Ha – Described as a waterpark. Basically a massive lazy river with water activities and ziplining all along the sides. Animals are primarily water animals like dolphins.
  • Xcaret – More animals (big cats, birds, butterflies) and shows. Has underground rivers to swim and snorkel.
  • Xplor – For Adventure lovers. 4×4’s, ziplines, underground rivers. Supposed to get the adrenaline going.
  • Xenses -Half day park with activities that are designed to wake up your senses. Think dark caves, light and color shows, and water attractions.

Have you been to any of the ecological parks? Did you enjoy Xel-Ha like we did? What about the other parks? Tell us in the comments below!

cozumel excursion photos

Cozumel has all of the typical cruise-ship water activities that you see at any of the ports. You can snorkel, scuba, you can ride a catamaran, swim with dolphins, visit sea turtles, take a submarine ride, and pretty much anything else you can think of. The only excursion of this type that I’ve participated in is the Catamaran, Snorkel, and Beach Break which I describe below.

Pretty much all of these shore excursion options are also available at other ports in the Caribbean. So if you don’t do them in Cozumel, don’t worry, you have other opportunities. For example:

  • Atlantis Submarine – Also in Barbados
  • Snorkeling – Amazing in Honduras
  • Scuba – Supposed to be Awesome in Belize
  • Catamaran – Pretty much everywhere – we enjoyed the catamaran at St. Kitts !
  • Swim with Dolphins – Also in Costa Maya , Jamaica , Bahamas , and probably others!

I did see that Cozumel has a really fun looking high speed boat. Has anyone gone on this tour? I’d love to hear about it!

Catamaran, Snorkel & Beach Break

The first time I visited Cozumel we booked a catamaran and beach break excursion through the cruise line. It was my first trip so I really enjoyed the catamaran ride, snorkeling, and the beach. I believe this excursion compared to other catamaran excursions out there, it didn’t stand out as being good or bad. It’s been a few years since I did this tour but I remember seeing lots of fish and also the guide pointing out things like stingrays. The food at the beach was also comparable to other places in the Caribbean. It was a simple, filling lunch, but nothing spectacular. And on the beach there was a guy carrying an iguana around who would let you take pictures with it for money. On the way back the rum punch was flowing and my friends had a great time drinking punch and dancing. I recommend this tour for beginning cruisers – it was fun.

What about you? Did you go on any shore excursions in Cozumel that you thought were just amazing? Let us know in the comments so we can plan our next trip!

DIY Cozumel Shore Excursion Options:

If you’re not feeling excited about any of the cruise line shore excursion options, or you’re just looking for a way to save some money, I have two options for DIY shore excursions in Cozumel. Both are easy, inexpensive, and offer different experiences.

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach is a beautiful beach and swimming pool that welcomes cruise ship travelers. It is the place to go if your ideal day involves palm trees, soft sand, and a beach lounger.

Getting There: To get there, all you have to do is take a taxi from the port. If your cruise ship parks at the southernmost pier like ours did, the taxi stand is easily found. Just walk past the shops area (away from the shore) and you’ll see the taxis lined up. A taxi of 4 people only costs $15 to get to Paradise Beach (as of January 2019). Within 15 minutes of hailing your taxi, you will find yourself escorted to a beach chair and then free to enjoy yourself for as long as you want.

Costs: The entrance fee to Paradise Beach is $3 per person. If you want to participate in the inflatables (they have probably 20 different ones), then the cost is $18 per person. You also agree to spend at least $10 per person on food when visiting Paradise Beach. Drinks are between $10-15 each and the food is in the same range, so it’s pretty easy to meet the $10 minimum and still feel like you had a relatively inexpensive day.

We thought Paradise Beach was absolutely beautiful and the food was great too! Sorry that I didn’t get a picture of the pool area, just know that it’s lovely!

Also, I thought this blog was a fantastic reference when planning our trip to Paradise Beach and just wanted to give credit!

The Money Bar

If you are interested in doing something on your own and are more into snorkeling, then the Money Bar is another great choice. The Money Bar is a restaurant and bar located right on the beach where you can eat a nice lunch, relax, and spend time swimming and snorkeling.

Getting There: To get to the Money Bar all you need to do is go all the way through the cruise terminal and catch a taxi outside (same as for Paradise Beach).

Costs: No entry fee, your only expense is the taxi and food or drinks!

Bring: Your own snorkel gear. I don’t remember there being a place to rent gear. And water socks!

There really isn’t much beach at the Money Bar, but if you want to snorkel the water is very shallow but they have a lot of concrete structures in the water that the urchins and small fish like to hide around. I highly recommend wearing water socks to protect your feet because it is very, very rocky.

I don’t remember much about the food at Money Bar, but I know friends who absolutely loved the Ceviche and look forwarding to going back.

Cozumel Port Area – Things to Know/Do

Restaurants.

Three Amigos –  The very first restaurant at the end of the pier is the Three Amigos and I highly recommend stopping there if you have some extra time in the afternoon. They have a full drink menu and offer lots of Mexican dishes which make a yummy afternoon snack. They also have a few picture spots onsite.

Shopkeepers are aggressive in many Caribbean islands, but I think more so in Cozumel than anywhere else. Don’t be surprised if you are constantly yelled at and asked to visit their shops. If you aren’t interested, a polite “No, Thank you” works just fine.

Ride a Rickshaw

Okay, the cruise ship pier isn’t very long, but sometimes you are just too exhausted from a week of cruising. Or sometimes your boyfriend sprains his ankle the day before you leave for your cruise. Either way, the rickshaw is a fun, inexpensive way to get a lift down the pier. We had fun crossing it off our to-do list!
