Takuya Kuroda

Headshot of Takuya Kuroda

Whether moving from Japan to the U.S. or navigating between the influences of jazz, soul, hip-hop, Afrobeat and electronica, trumpeter/composer Takuya Kuroda has never followed a straight path. On his fifth studio album and Concord Records debut, the aptly named  Zigzagger , Kuroda darts between those wide-ranging interests with a funky swagger and an intensely swinging vigor. The deeply infectious album finds the trumpeter snaking his way around the opposing poles of acoustic and electric, bristling grooves and blissed-out vibes, punchy brass and fluid synths, carving his own distinctive sonic path along the way.

“Life is sometimes not that easy, sometimes not so difficult, and it should never go straight,” Kuroda says. “It’s always zigzagging. So I put my soul and spirit into that word.”

Though it wasn’t intentional on Kuroda’s part, the title also can’t help but evoke The Sidewinder , Lee Morgan’s 1964 classic that became one of the touchstones of the then-burgeoning soul-jazz style. Morgan has been a major influence on Kuroda as a player and as a conceptualist, and with Zigzagger the 36-year-old trumpeter offers his own take on the state of the soul-jazz art more than half a century later. His music takes into account the electronic innovations of artists like Flying Lotus and J Dilla, while remaining true to the window-rattling funk and soul-stirring grooves which forcefully carry on the tradition.

Kuroda’s vision is realized with the help of his regular working band, most of them friends and collaborators for more than a decade since attending New York City’s New School together. They include trombonist Corey King, who also shows off his vocal chops on the simmering neo-soul tune “Do They Know;” bassist Rashaan Carter; drummer and percussionist Adam Jackson; and the band’s newest addition, keyboardist Takeshi Ohbayashi, who joined up in 2011. Three tracks bolster the band with master percussionist Keita Ogawa, who first crossed paths with Kuroda 20 years ago at jam sessions in their native Japan. Album closer “Think Twice” features the electrifying sounds of the popular Brooklyn Afrobeat band Antibalas.

Produced by Kuroda himself, Zigzagger is more purely an expression of his own distinctive approach. It maintains the unified style and infectious grooves of his earlier work, but mixes things up with more eclectic, shifting inspirations and perspectives. “When I write music I see a lot of elements and put them in different places, with different angles, a lot of counterpoint and strong melodies,” Kuroda explains. “It’s always easy to sing to, but has something like advanced changes underneath, kind of hidden so that people don’t get confused by the difficult elements. But it’s there. Musicians always tell me my music is easy to listen to but difficult to play.”

It was absolutely insane! Had such a great time, chill vibe, some wine with friends in a small but perfect venue. Incredible musicians and good sound! Really looking forward to listen to Takuya again as soon as possible!

Takuya Kuroda stepped into his own at Glasslands on July 26th. I’d seen him as a performer with other musicians for a few years and heard his album “Native Son.” As great as he was and is onstage and on recording, his performance (with amazing musicians whose names I mistakenly didn’t write down that night) was one for the ages. Note that Glasslands, like many of the smaller NYC and borough venues, is acoustically tricky. Sound’s power is often measured by its volume. While that was true of the DJ who preceded Takuya’s show, once Takuya took the stage, he took the stage. His management of the trumpet’s keys, tonalities, and vibrations makes him a musician who will one day be mentioned along with Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Clifford Brown.

Now Takuya vibes and riffs in ways that feel in a most bizarre yet real manner as intimate and bold. Right? How often is something intimate direct, solid, bright, and brave?

There’s a globality to Takuya’s music reflected by tracks on “Rising Son” and absolutely displayed at this show. While I think he is still defining his jazz, its soulful, rich, and improvy quality is clear in his performances and compositions.

Takuya Kuroda

A highly-respected trumpeter born in Kobe, Japan, Takuya is a forward-thinking musician that has developed a unique hybrid sound, blending soulful jazz, funk, post-bop, fusion and hip hop music.

After following the footsteps of his trombonist brother playing in big bands, he relocated to New York to study jazz & contemporary music at The New School in Union Square; a course he graduated from in the mid- noughties. It was here that Takuya met vocalist José James, with whom he worked on the ‘Blackmagic’ and ‘No Beginning No End’ projects.

Following graduation, Takuya established himself further in the NYC jazz scene, performing with the likes of Akoya Afrobeat and in recent years with DJ Premier’s BADDER band (also including acclaimed bass player, Brady Watt). Premier said “The BADDER Band project was put together by my manager, and an agent I’ve known since the beginning of my Gang Starr career. He said, ‘What if you put a band together that revolved around a trumpet player from Japan named Takuya Kuroda? He’s got a hip-hop perspective and respect in the jazz field…”

Takuya Kuroda is already incredibly prolific, releasing five albums in the past decade and fortifying a solid reputation in the global jazz scene. 2011 saw the release of Takuya’s independently-produced debut album, ‘Edge’, followed by ‘Bitter and High’ the following year and ‘Six Aces’ on P-Vine in 2013. Takuya was signed to the legendary Blue Note Records in 2014 for his album ‘Rising Son’, as well as appearing on their 2019 cover versions project, ‘Blue Note Voyage’. He released his 5th album ‘Zigzagger’ on Concord in 2016, which also featured Antibalas on a reimagining of the Donald Byrd classic ‘Think Twice’.

Late Summer 2020, Takuya Kuroda returns with his sixth album ‘Fly Moon Die Soon’. In his words, “this album is about the irony between the greatness of nature and the beautiful obsceneness of humanity. Melodies and grooves fly back and forth from being spiritual to being vulgar.”

REVIEW: Takuya Kuroda, ‘Fly Moon Die Soon’ (First World)

takuya kuroda tour

Trumpeter and vocalist Takuya Kuroda’s sixth release deviates from his norm of live-in-the-studio tracking by increasing the use of studio effects. Loops, overdubs, sampling and beats combine with the input of guest musicians —periodically invited into the studio — to cohesively engender music that grooves to pop yet satisfies jazz yearnings. Magic in its purest form. I love Floating Points, I love Pharoah Sanders, I love The London Symphony Orchestra. It's a match made in heaven, and the result is absolutely gorgeous. I have loved this record since its release, and realized I don't own it for some reason. So its time to change that. 9.5/10 honestly could become a 10/10 on an indepth vinyl relisten. angrypizza98

How Takuya Kuroda Cut a Modern Jazz Classic (And Is Still Evolving 10 Years Later)

On the 10th anniversary of ‘rising son’, kuroda discusses his musical journey, discusses he and jose james’ seminal iteration of “everybody loves the sunshine” and more..

takuya kuroda trumpeter musician jazz rising son album blue note jose james everybody loves the sunshine interview conversation

You are reading your free article for this month. Members-only

It’s a rainy January day in Brooklyn, and Takuya Kuroda has been afforded a brief respite from his packed schedule. With space to think, he gets to reminiscing. “It’s funny: I’ll still get DMs saying ‘I love your song! It’s so fresh!’” the trumpeter says, referring to the version of Roy Ayers Ubiquity track “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” that he reimagined alongside vocalist Jose James . “I’m like ‘It’s not my song! … It’s amazing that my arrangement of that song can open so many doors for people.”

Kuroda is far from nostalgic. Miles Davis , one of his significant trumpet influences alongside Clifford Brown and Freddie Hubbard, once said, “If anyone wants to keep creating, they have to be about change.” That mindset has also been at the forefront of Kuroda’s creative output over his nearly two-decade career as a bandleader, composer, side man and more.

Margo Cilker’s sophomore album, Valley of Heart’s Delight, refers to a place she can’t return: California’s Santa Clara Valley, as it was known before the orchards were paved over and became more famous for Silicon than apricots. In this 11-song follow-up to 2021’s critically acclaimed Pohorylle, family and nature intertwine as guiding motifs, at once precious and endangered, beautiful and exhausting. Cilker and Pohorylle producer Sera Cahoone brought most of that record’s highly-acclaimed crew (studio players for The Decemberists, Band Of Horses, and Beirut) back to the studio with additional contributions from acclaimed Northwest traditionalist Caleb Klauder. Valley of Heart’s Delight, Cilker’s second record on Portland, Oregon label Fluff & Gravy Records, has already racked up an impressive list of accolades and year-end picks and has paved the way for 2024’s extensive touring and festival appearances.

Margo Cilker lives near the Columbia River in Goldendale, Washington with her husband, songwriter and working cowboy Forrest VanTuyl, as well their dog and some horses.
