Jaw-dropping software converts 360 video into 3D model for VR

Institut Pascal's software converts 360 video into 3D model

What if you could create a 3D model of a space, simply by walking around and recording a 360 video of it with an off-the-shelf consumer 360 camera?  Maxime Lhuillier from CNRS/Institut Pascal/UCA demonstrated just such a technology, and now you can check out the amazing demo video and explore two 3D models!

Photogrammetry alternative

Nowadays, it is possible to create a 3D model of a space by taking hundreds of photographs of a space and using computers to analyze those photos through photogrammetry and computer vision methods.  This is a laborious process, and is especially time-consuming and resource-intensive for large scenes.  However, Institut Pascal has developed software that can convert a 360 video taken by a consumer 360 camera into a 3D model.

How it works

For this demo, Maxime Lhuillier attached a Garmin Virb 360 onto a helmet and walked about a space while recording a 360 video.  Using only that video, their software has been able to generate a 3D model of a space as complex as a forest. The following video shows walkthroughs in a 3D model of a forest reconstructed from videos taken by a Virb 360:

Compared to conventional photogrammetry, this method poses several additional technical hurdles: not only are there large scenes, but with compressed videos, the image quality is lower than those of still images or professional cameras.  In addition, backlit portions of the videos have less visible detail after image compression, making 3D reconstruction even more difficult.

Remarkably, the 360 video was converted into a 3D model using only a laptop.   There are several limitations to this technology: the scene must be static, there must be sufficient texture and light in the scene, the camera motion must be slow enough, and the walking or biking must be slow.  The goal of this technology is not accuracy for metrology applications but to approximate a complex scene for visualization using consumer cameras.  It’s exciting to imagine the many potential commercial and industrial applications of this technology, such as for real estate, mapping, or documenting a construction site.

Explore these demos

Here are two 3D models that you can explore in Sketchfab.  These two models were generated from videos taken by a 360 camera rig consisting of four helmet-mounted Gopro Hero 3 cameras recording video at 100 fps with frame-accurate synchronization.  You can explore these models in VR with an HTC Vive (reviewed here) or Oculus Rift (reviewed here)  or even just Google Cardboard using a browser that supports WebVR, such as Firefox Nightly .

First, here is a 2.5km long street in a city (only a few regions are textured due to texture storage limitation).  This model was generated from biking for 2.5 km, and the gray squares show 2,615 keyframes:

2.5km street, helmet-held 360 camera by Maxime Lhuillier on Sketchfab

Second, here is a 3D model of a forest.  This one was recorded from a video while walking around a forest for 4 minutes.  The gray squares show 878 keyframes:

Forest, helmet-held 360 camera by Maxime Lhuillier on Sketchfab

Both the software and method are currently under development, and researchers are working on improvements for all steps of the method (matching, structure from motion, self-calibration, loop closure, surface reconstruction, and texturing).   The software is not available for demonstration, nor does Institut Pascal have plans for selling the software.   However, there are other companies developing software for similar purposes.  Meanwhile, what do you think of the technology and these demos? Let me know in the comments!

Thank you very much to Maxime Lhuillier  for sharing this demo!  Maxime is a CNRS researcher at the Institut Pascal , a laboratory of Université Clermont Auvergne in Aubière, France.  You can check out his account at YouTube and Sketchfab to see other 3D models generated using this technology.

This is all fantastic stuff.

I’m hoping that in the long term, we have some AI algorithms that can “auto-fix” the 3D defects in real time. (Artificial Intelligence: “…That looks like tree bark, let me fix that texture…. Now, that looks like a leaf, let me fix that texture…. Now that looks like a road; let me flatten it out to a normal looking road…”). Then maybe we can create true Holodecks out of 360 videos.

(Chief Blur Buster here, I write about VR announcements as well)

Thanks Chief Blur Buster! Nice to meet you! Best regards, Mic

Insert a drone, let the drone make the scan, then import in a 3D environment in real time. People can analyze the site for forensic data even, plan tacticals, etc.

Hi Khannea. Just to clarify, Cupix does not convert the 360 photos into 3D in realtime. The process takes several hours. Best regards, Mic

Whenever I see “jaw dropping” in a story title, credibility takes a dive. This is a cheap click-bait term. Looking at the generated 3D models, they are quite rough. not that impressive.

Thanks for the feedback Bill. The 3d models are indeed rough but what is amazing to me is that the software generated these models from a 360 video. Best regards, Mic

This is Great stuff (Y)

I think so too Priyadarshan! Best regards, Mic

This looks great, but the depth in the 3D model generated is not up to the mark. Thanks for sharing though.

Hi Venkatesh. Yes the 3D model is quite simple. I’m confident that as the technology improves we will see more detailed models. Best regards, Mic

Great job, guys. From Russia with Love!

Hello and welcome to 360 Rumors! Good to have you here! Best regards, Mic

This all remember me to the free Opensource Software Blender make a mix in VR with 360 Videos and Animations. Great work

https://youtu.be/mN0zPOpADL4

wow !!!!!! this is such a huge breakthrough!!! looking forward for a commercial license.

Hi Luis! Institut Pascal said they don’t plan to commercialize it. However, you might be interested in something similar AND will be available, which is this: https://360rumors.com/2017/12/true-vr-camera-everyone-giroptic-io-will-6dof-vr-capture-capability.html

This is very interesting. I do hope software such as this will become available.

Hi Alison. Stay tuned for my upcoming post on Giroptic’s software for doing this with a $200 camera.

Best regards, Mic

I find it interesting that you can now create 3d models from such videos. But the quality of the resulting models still has to be greatly improved in order for them to have a practical benefit.

It’s a nice turnkey solution, though far from professional results. It still really comes down to exporting an image sequence and depth maps sequence (if possible), then using Photoscan or RealityCapture to create your point cloud or mesh model. Anything less is just unuable, albeit novel.

Great work! This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for (as-built space documentation, reduce trips to the site, without the $40k price tag). What type of format are the 3d models generated into? Sketchfab is a new software to me, is it like sketchup but with different capabilities? I hope to hear more about this soon.

i don’t remember the format, but it is a standard 3d model format. sketchfab is more for showing than creating 3d models.

This demo already surpasses Google’s Street View photogrammetry quality. If only the technology could be democratized so more people could add to the global point cloud database.

i agree that would be ideal! i think that’s what google is trying to do, which is why it is accepting even 4K photos.

Is this processing software available for download to play with? I’ve got a GoPro Fusion and Insta360 ONE X.

Ten Museums You Can Virtually Visit

Museums are closing their doors amid the coronavirus crisis, but many offer digital exhibitions visitors can browse from the comfort of home

Vatican (mobile)

Nadine Daher

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, museums and cultural institutions across the globe are closing their doors to the public. But while visitors can no longer roam the halls of these institutions, virtual tools and online experiences mean anyone with an internet connection can browse world-class collections from home.

The Smithsonian Institution , of course, has its own array of virtual tours, experiences and educational resources . Among the other experiences on offer: Scroll through an extensive trove of 3-D photographs from the Minneapolis Institute of Art , explore online exhibits from the National Women’s History Museum in Virginia, or admire artistic masterpieces from the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Spain. Additionally, around 2,500 museums and galleries, including the Uffizi Galleries in Florence and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, are offering virtual tours and presenting online collections via the Google Arts and Culture portal.

For those in search of armchair travel inspiration, Smithsonian magazine has compiled a list of ten museums that have found new ways to fulfill their critical mission of cultivating creativity and spreading knowledge.

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza

Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza

Home to the world’s second largest private collection of art, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza owns masterpieces by giants of virtually every art movement—to name just a few, Jan van Eyck, Titian, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Picasso and Dalí. To spotlight these artistic treasures, the Madrid museum offers an array of multimedia resources . Users can take a virtual tour of the entire building (or a thematic tour covering such topics as food, sustainability, fashion and even “inclusive love”); browse current and closed exhibits ; and watch behind-the-scenes videos featuring interviews, lectures and technical studies.

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea

Committed to offering a culturally rewarding experience since opening its doors in 2013, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul (MMCA) has established itself as a prominent cultural platform and leader in Korean art. In collaboration with Google Arts and Culture, the MMCA is now offering a virtual tour of its collections. This experience takes visitors through six floors of modern and contemporary art from Korea and around the world. Those seeking an educational walkthrough can follow along by tuning into curator-led recorded tours.

The Anne Frank House

Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House , established in cooperation with the famed diarist’s father, Otto, in 1957, strives to inform the public through educational programs and tours of the building where the teenager and her family hid during World War II. To delve deeper into the story detailed in Frank’s diary, online visitors can watch videos about her life; virtually explore the Secret Annex ; look around the house where she lived before going into hiding; and view the Google Arts and Culture exhibition “ Anne Frank: Her Life, Her Diary, Her Legacy .”

The Vatican Museums

Vatican (social)

Home to some 70,000 artworks and artifacts spanning centuries, continents and mediums, the 5.5-hectare Vatican Museums are among Italy’s finest cultural institutions. Virtual visitors can tour seven different sections of the sprawling complex, enjoying 360-degree views of the Sistine Chapel , perhaps best known for Michelangelo’s ceiling and Last Judgment fresco; Raphael’s Rooms , where the Renaissance artist’s School of Athens resides; and lesser-known but equally sumptuous locations such as the Pio Clementino Museum, the Niccoline Chapel and the Room of the Chiaroscuri.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

Guggenheim

“Since its founding, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum has maintained a belief in the transformative powers of art,” reads the Manhattan museum’s website . “In uncertain times such as these, art can provide both solace and inspiration.”

In a nod to this mission, the Guggenheim , a cultural center and educational institution devoted to modern and contemporary art, has opened up its collections to online visitors. The building itself, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is an architectural masterpiece; audiences can listen to an audio guide of its history or journey up its spiral halls via a Google Arts and Culture virtual tour . For those who want to take a deeper dive into the museum’s collections, the Guggenheim’s online database features some 1,700 artworks by more than 625 artists.

The London National Gallery

The National Gallery

Take a virtual tour of 18 gallery rooms, enjoy a panoramic view of the museum’s halls and click through a wide collection of artistic masterpieces using the National Gallery ’s virtual tools . Based in London, this museum houses more than 2,300 works reflecting the Western European tradition between the 13th and 19th centuries. Collection highlights include Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers and J.M.W Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire .

NASA Research Centers

Katherine Johnson at Langley Research Center

For those fascinated by space exploration, NASA offers online visitors the chance to take a behind-the-scenes look inside its facilities. Visitors can take virtual tours of the organization’s research centers, where aeronautic technology is developed and tested, and learn more about the functions of different facilities. The online tour of Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, covers 16 locations, including the Flight Research Hangar and the Katherine Johnson Computational Research Facility. The virtual tour of the Glenn Research Center in Ohio, meanwhile, takes visitors inside facilities such as the Supersonic Wind Tunnel, where high speed flight is researched, and the Zero Gravity Research Facility, where microgravity research is conducted.

The National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City

National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City

Home to the world’s largest ancient Mexican art collection, in addition to an extensive collection of ethnographic objects, the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City preserves the country’s indigenous legacy and celebrates its cultural heritage. In collaboration with Google Arts and Culture, the museum has made some 140 items available for online visitors to explore from their homes. Among the objects available for viewing are the famous Aztec calendar sun stone and the striking jade death mask of ancient Mayan king Pakal the Great.

San Francisco’s De Young Museum

de Young Museum

One of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco , the de Young Museum ’s new copper-clad building in Golden Gate Park combines art with architecture. The collection features a priceless array of American art dating from the 17th to the 21st centuries, as well as artifacts from Africa and Oceania, modern and contemporary art, costumes, and textiles. Through Google Arts and Culture, the de Young offers 11 exhibits, including “ Cult of the Machine ” and “ Ruth Asawa: A Working Life .”

The Louvre

Housed in a large fortress along the banks of Paris’ Seine River, the Louvre regularly tops rankings of the most-visited museums in the world, with millions of visitors flocking to its halls in search of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa , the Venus de Milo and other instantly recognizable artworks. Virtual tours offered by the Louvre include a walkthrough of the Egyptian antiquities wing and a view of the museum’s moat, which was built in 1190 to protect Paris from invaders.

Adam Pascal Joins Immersive NEXT TO NORMAL In Barcelona This Summer

The new production will be 60 minutes and play in 360 degrees.

pixeltracker

Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning musical Next To Normal will be adapted in a new, live immersive musical theater format, and will receive its worldwide premiere at the Festival Grec de Barcelona this July. Performance dates will be announced Tuesday, April 26, and tickets go on sale on Wednesday, April 27.

This production will be the first Broadway show to be presented in this new, 60-minute, disruptive, 100% immersive, live musical theater format. With no sets or props, Next to Normal will play a 20,000 square-foot venue, utilizing a surround-sound system and 360-degree projections to create an immersive experience that places the audience alongside the actors.

Directed by Simon Pittman (RSC, National Theatre, Frantic Assembly), this immersive live musical theater production of Next to Normal is officially blessed by the show's Pulitzer and Tony winning writers Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey , with music director Tommy Mayer Wolf bringing new textures to this sophisticated score that travels from classical music to rock-and-roll.

Alice Ripley will reprise her Tony Award winning performance as Diana, who will be joined live by Andy Señor Jr. (Rent), Jade Laurel, Eloi Gomez, and Lewis Edgar . Tony Award nominee Adam Pascal will play Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine in a virtual format.

"Tom and Brian's beloved Next to Normal in this new perspective will make a dramatically soulful impact on the human hearts presented. Next to Normal exists to help us find the light," said Alice Ripley .

"Tom and I couldn't be more thrilled that the world will get to see Next to Normal in this brand-new way. When we wrote the show, we wanted to bring the audience inside the mind of the lead character-and this incredible new immersive production makes that happen in a bold and amazing fashion," said Brian Yorkey .

"No doubt Next to Normal is the kind of story that can be empowered through this immersive experience for the level of intimacy and direct connection it establishes with audiences all around the world," said Creative Producer Pablo del Campo, who brought this innovative idea to the authors.

"I hope this new immersive experience will intensify the brilliance of the original, and offer a thrilling new perspective to the story," said director Simon Pittman .

Next to Normal centers on a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effects that managing her illness has on her family. The musical opened on Broadway in April 2009. It was nominated for eleven Tony Awards that year and won three: Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley . It also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming the eighth musical in history to receive the honor.

As part of Festival Grec de Barcelona, this world premiere of the immersive live Next to Normal will take place at IDEAL, a European incubator art center led by Executive Producer Jordi Sellas, where trendy exhibitions are created and produced for well-known artists such as Frida, Klimt or Dali, as well as emerging artists and cultural pushers.

Virtual Pascal

│ Deutsch (de) │ English (en) │ français (fr) │

Virtual Pascal is a 32-bit compiler for DOS, Windows and OS/2 that later got retargeted to Linux/x86 using a pe2elf postprocessor. Its dialect is a subset of older Delphi's and FPC 1.x. VP goes a bit further in its support for TP's DOS and 16 bit specific behaviour, and under certain circumstances existing TurboPascal code requires less modifications.

The main strengths of VP are the very TP compatible textmode IDE and its OS/2 support. One of the other main strengths, stability is also its main weakness: it is fairly static, and hasn't changed significantly since at least 2005.

VP was declared EOL in 2005, and a brief revival attempt failed. The site is gone (but can still be found using wayback), but the owner set up a community at ning.com. (see links section)

Using FPC/Delphi code under VP

Most notably missing (compared to FPC 1.x) are int64 and overloading support. The way external procedures are declared isn't entirely compatible with Delphi either. Modifiers like "stdcall" and the "external 'dllname.dll' name 'symbol' syntax are not supported, which makes porting headers hard.

At a certain point is was attempted to update VP's partially closed source sysutils with FPC's, but the number of modifications needed was quite high, and VPs revival was short lived.

About the Kresge and Pascal Galleries

The Kresge Foundation Gallery and the Andre Z. Pascal Gallery are in the Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts. The Kresge and Pascal Galleries are postmodern facilities designed by the firm of Hardy, Holtzman, and Pfeiffer. Since opening the building in 1999, the Galleries have hosted an intriguing contemporary exhibition schedule. Renowned artists shown in the gallery include Sally Mann, Henry Darger, Cindy Sherman, Alighiero Boetti, Duane Michaels, Tony Oursler, Miguel Calderon, Aziz & Cucher, Cathy de Monchaux, Willie Birch, Ant Farm, Ernesto Pujol, Radcliffe Bailey, Marco Brambilla, Mona Hatoum, Howard Finster, Luis Cruz Azaceta, Sophie Calle, Kara Walker, Chris Verene, and Catherine Opie.

Angelica and Russ Berrie provided the lead gift in a campaign that raised funds from corporations and individuals, College employees and alumni, state and federal government, and private foundations. Toward the end of the campaign a challenge grant of $475,000 from the Kresge Foundation assisted the College in raising the balance required to complete the project. The Pascal Gallery was funded by Gregory Z. Bukstein, a beloved and generous benefactor of the College, in memory of his twin brother. Their book, Survival: The Story of Two Brothers, recounts the story of the Bukstein brothers’ early childhood in Poland, exile to Siberia, survival during the Holocaust, life as refugees and pioneers in the then newly-created state of Israel and their eventual emigration to the United States.

VR Tour For Std. 9 Ch. 10. Gravitation

What's Included in Virtual tour of this chapter

The universal law of gravity was founded by Sir Isaac newton. According to the universal law of gravitation, every object attracts every other object with a force. Earth attracts all objects towards it. This is due to its gravitational force. Whenever objects fall towards the earth under this force alone, we can say that the objects are in free fall.  The weight of the object on the moon is equal to nearly one-sixth of its weight on the earth. We will also understand thrust and pressure further in the chapter.

Virtual tour 1 Universal Law of Gravitation

Virtual tour 1: Universal Law of Gravitation

Every object in the Universe attracts every other object with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the separation between their centers. It’s called the universal law of gravitational. This law applies to objects anywhere in the universe. Such a law is said to be universal.

Virtual tour 2 Free Fall

Virtual tour 2: Free Fall

When the object falls due to the earth’s gravitational pull, its velocity changes and is said to be accelerated due to the earth’s gravity and it falls freely called free fall. This acceleration is calculated to be 9.8 meters per Second Square.

Virtual tour 3 Mass and Weight

Virtual tour 3: Mass and Weight

In the universe, the mass of the object is the same and the weight of the object depends on the acceleration due to the gravity present on earth. So we can say that the mass of the object is the same on the earth whereas on the moon the weight of the object is (1/6) times its weight on the earth .

Virtual tour 4 Thrust and Pressure

Virtual tour 4: Thrust and Pressure

The force acting on the object perpendicular to the surface is called thrust. And the force that acts per unit area of the object is pressure. The SI unit for the thrust is the newton, and for the pressure is Newton per meter square or Pascal.

Virtual tour 5 The Archimedes principle

Virtual tour 5: The Archimedes principle

In this virtual tour, we will learn about Archimedes’ principles. It states that “A body immersed in a liquid loses weight by an amount equal to the weight of the liquid displaced.” Archimedes’s principle also states that: “When a body is immersed in a liquid, an upward thrust, equal to the weight of the liquid displaced, acts on it.”
