7 Browser Extensions to Help Translate Different Languages

Traffic signage on the ground in English and Chinese languages

Harness the full potential of your browser with add-ons that can supercharge everything from web searches to email writing . For language learners who want to grow their vocabulary and develop confidence, browser extensions are an opportunity to casually practice while online. But before you download anything, here’s how to audit a browser extension to ensure it’s safe.

Whether you're streaming Netflix series during your spare time or gobbling up the latest tech news, at least one of the following picks is likely worth incorporating into your language learning process. Test the options that spark your interest and simply uninstall anything that you don’t enjoy. Although you will not receive speaking practice, these browser extensions can help hone your reading and listening skills.

Language Reactor is for anyone who wants to practice a new language while streaming videos on their computer. After the browser extension is installed, YouTube videos are able to display two sets of captions at the same time. The list of available languages is impressive, and hovering over a captioned word displays a translation dictionary.

If you binge-watch movies and TV shows on your computer, Language Reactor’s other primary function is to provide dual captions for Netflix entertainment. Practice English with the minions from Despicable Me or brush up on your Korean during the Squid Game bloodbath.

In addition to Netflix and YouTube, Language Reactor requests access to your data from Amazon. To turn this off, click the puzzle icon located to the right of the address bar, and select Manage Extensions . Tap on Details , toggle off automatic access to listed sites, and manually pick the sites.

The basic extension is free. More features, like the ability to save vocabulary words, can be unlocked with a $5 monthly subscription. Language Reactor is available for Chrome, but its website says Firefox and Edge versions are in the works.

Google’s language tools receive a fair amount of criticism from teachers and human translators. When pasting large blocks of text into Google for translation, the subtle complexities of language are smoothed over. Literal meanings are easy to convey, but intentions and contexts are difficult to parse. Keeping these limitations in mind, Google Translate, Google Dictionary, and Google Input Tools are solid browser extensions for Chrome users.

The Google Translate extension is simple to use for pop-up translations as you browse the internet. You can adjust the settings so pop-ups happen automatically when you highlight a word, or buttons can appear beneath the highlighted word for you to click on to see the translation. Tap on the speaker icon to hear a word aloud. If this extension is pinned at the top of your browser, anytime you click on the icon, a text box for translation immediately appears.

Google Dictionary does not support as many languages as Google Translate, but the extension is useful if you’re studying one of the available options. When double-clicking on a word, the definition pops up on screen. For more advanced readers, this can be crucial for learning new words without relying on direct translations. If you would like to go back and practice later, Google Dictionary lets you store a list of defined words.

Typing in German or Italian with a standard English keyboard is straightforward, but what if you're learning Hindi or Chinese? With Google Input Tools you can write in different languages. The transliteration feature allows you to type the phonetic spelling of a word and choose the corresponding script from a dropdown menu. In addition, the handwriting tool lets you draw characters from other languages by using your mouse cursor.

While reading articles online, Toucan automatically translates a small portion of the content for blended language learning. Hovering over translations by Toucan shows the original word and allows you to play an audible pronunciation. The standard extension is free to use, but a subscription plan is offered for reviewing saved words and avoiding ads. Toucan is compatible with Chrome and Firefox.

For English speakers, the browser extension offers translations in 11 languages. Spanish, German, Korean, Arabic, and Hebrew are a few of the choices. The company is working to expand its offered languages with additions such as Vietnamese, Swedish, and Farsi.

By cherry-picking words out of larger blocks of text, you may not experience complete contextual accuracy while using Toucan. When approaching a new language, employing a myriad of learning strategies is better than relying on a single source of information. Toucan has its drawbacks but may be a fantastic tool for people who read multiple articles a day and would like supplemental language practice.

With Mate Translate , words or phrases you read online can be translated into more than 100 languages. Double-click on a single word for a white text box to show the translation. If you tap on the speaker icon, a person will say the word aloud. Translate more than one word by highlighting the portion you would like to better understand and either clicking on the Mate Translate logo that appears below the selected words or using the keyboard shortcut, which is initially set to Shift + T .

Watching entertainment in other languages is a popular and accessible learning strategy; if you’re a Netflix subscriber, Mate Translate can be used on subtitles. The browser extension also allows you to translate entire webpages.

As a versatile option, Mate Translate is available for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Edge, and Safari. Unlock extra features for the extension, like synonym access and a dark mode, with a subscription to Mate Pro.

The core functionality of TransOver is similar to Google Translate. Pick a language you want to practice and set the browser extension to activate either when you highlight a word or hover over a word. It’s available on Firefox , Chrome , and Opera . The extension is also on Edge but is poorly reviewed by users of that browser. TransOver is a simplistic, free option for people who want to occasionally translate words while surfing the Internet and don’t need a complicated browser extension cluttering their day-to-day user experience.

5 Ways to Watch Netflix and Still Learn a New Language

Learning a foreign language with Netflix is one of the fun ways to master a new language.

Have you ever thought about practicing the language you are learning with Netflix? Netflix streams to more than 190 countries around the world and you can easily change your Netflix language . While most of the content is in English, the streaming platform also supports 22 languages that include Arabic, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

Binge-watching could be a great unique way to pick up a second or third language and learn how it is spoken colloquially. Or, you could improve your English too.

The language learning Chrome extensions below help stack a self-improvement habit on top of your Netflix fixation. Just note that not all content has the same number of languages supported by subtitles.

Language Learning with Netflix : Netflix Study Pack for Languages

LLN (or Language Learning with Netflix) is one of the more complete tools for the purpose. The Chrome extension displays two subtitles at the same time. The first one is the native language of the show, and the second is the language you are trying to learn. This visual pairing allows you to compare and absorb new words and the way they are spoken.

You can control the playback speed with the Chrome extension. Slow them down (or pause) to study at your own pace. But the best feature is the vocabulary highlight that grays out less common words to study later.

The pop-up dictionary is an extra aid. Use it to understand the meaning better and also hear it's correct pronunciation.

The Language Learning Chrome extension comes with this catalog of movies and TV shows with high-quality subtitles.

Mate Translate : Learn With Netflix's Subtitles

Study 103 languages with Mate Translate

Mate Translate proves again how valuable Netflix's subtitles can be for learning any language. The main app is a text & speech translator available across multiple platforms including Android and iOS. The Netflix specific browser extensions are there for Chrome, Opera, Firefox, and Edge.

Mate Translate can translate 103 languages . As you watch a streaming show, just click on a word or a phrase. The translation is displayed in the player and you can use any synonyms, phonetic transcription, and the speak-out feature to learn pronunciation too.

Save the words in categorized lists to practice them later. You can also export the word lists to a spaced repetition app like Reji to review them at intervals.

Subtly : Become Fluent With Translations

Subtly also works like the Netflix extensions above. Like them, you can translate the words or phrases and learn a new language with the context of what's happening in the scene. Watch a show and then revise with the vocabulary list it helps you build up.

Use Subtly and translate English subtitles into 11 languages: Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, and Turkish.

Subtly is gradually being improved to include more languages. Also, you can look forward to its future as it tries to bring in other streaming platforms like Amazon, Hulu, and Showtime for a wider platter of choices.

eJOY : Improve Your English Fluency

English Translations

Urban Dictionary is always a big help with slangs. After all, Street-speak is a part of many Hollywood movies (Pulp Fiction, anyone?) and it could just help you grab the little nuances that make any language colorful.

An extension called SUFLI is a bit buggy. So my search took me to eJOY which is like a full-featured English translator for your browser . Use it to get definitions of words, English idioms, common phrases, slangs, and collocations.

It also works with YouTube, Udemy, Coursera, and a few other streaming platforms that support closed captions.

eJOY also has its own shortcut keys that help to speed up translations. You can use it to translate to other languages with the advanced translator, but eJOY is more for improving your grasp on your English vocabulary.

Lingvo TV : Learn in Your Browser and Phone

LingoTV - Learn Language with Netflix

Lingvo is a Chrome extension that works with your phone. It can be any phone with a mobile browser. Start Netflix on your browser and then launch the Lingvo page on your phone’s browser.

Enter the code from your Lingvo Chrome extension on your computer and you can view the subtitle translations on your phone. The source and target language can be configured from the Settings on the mobile app.

Now, you can learn a language on the move while watching Netflix. Lingvo TV also supports Amazon Prime and YouTube.

Your PC or TV, and mobile phone need to be on the same network. Once connected via the code, the same subtitles you see on the PC or TV scroll down the mobile screen.

You can select a word and get its meanings in the language of your choice with a tap. The subtitles you tapped on are saved in the app's history.

Lingvo frees you up a bit more to enjoy the movie on the screen while you tap on the scrolling subtitles on the mobile screen.

Netflix Makes It Easier to Learn a New Language

Should you use Netflix to learn a new language? Probably not if you are picking up a second language for the first time because these language learning extensions won't teach you the grammar and the fundamentals.

However, it is a fun way to learn a language through immersion . If you are already familiar with a language, then go ahead and use Netflix to get more exposure. It might help to build your listening skills too.

Learning a language with Netflix is one of the fun ways to get fluent in a new tongue . But there are other unusual tools too. Here are the best mobile apps to learn Chinese .

The ultimate guide to everything you need to know about netflix for language learning.

One thing that’ll help you keep motivated when learning a new language is to have something you can enjoy binging on Netflix in that language. Here’s the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning.

Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners.

Why use Netflix for language learning?

A few weeks before originally writing this article, I tweeted out an article I’d read about the results of a survey from Netflix.

TLDR = they’re set on making content in different languages. Good news for international users and for language learners!

Firstly, this means that there’s likely to be even more international content in different languages for you to enjoy in the future.

But it also means you’re more likely to find something you enjoy to watch. Having a cultural connection to a language can really help to maintain long term motivation. Plus, it acts as a great gateway to learn more about places that speak the languages you’re learning.

Basically, enjoying film, TV, or even music in another language is a must!

With that in mind, I want to share with you how to best use Netflix for language learning.

I’ll be working through these steps with Netflix on the computer so I can easily screengrab images to help explain things, but things shouldn’t be drastically different across devices.

The thing that will be different is when we get to needing to type URL web addresses to find stuff. It’s worth spending some time with Netflix on your computer to do the other type of Netflix Binge (the Search + Add to Watchlist Binge) and then watch stuff on your other devices as you normally would once it’s on your watchlist.

How can I actively learn a language with Netflix?

Let’s get one thing straight right away. Passive learning isn’t necessarily “bad” or a “waste of time”, like perhaps you’ve been led to believe. It can be a very valuable part of your whole language learning.

However, from time to time, you might want to take some film & TV and make it an active learning activity. Great! When that’s how you’re feeling, I have a process that I share briefly in the free pack above.

But the free Film & TV Study Pack is only half the story. If you want to understand more about how film & TV work for language learning, Watch & Learn is for you.

Watch & Learn course graphic on a computer screen with screenshots from the video lessons and pages from the Notion guide

It’s a mini course (like, super mini, a binge-able 36 minutes!) that shows you how to understand more about subtitles & the truth about passive learning, how to find what to watch, and how to put my active learning process into practice when needed.

You want to make progress in your language studies—and you want it to be tangible and enjoyable. You’d prefer to learn from real-world situations that have meaning and relevance for you. And we get it! That’s why I made Watch & Learn: a super binge-able mini course to teach you how to make the most of film & TV for your language studies.

Let’s get started! First, we’ll talk about how to adjust your Netflix settings for better language learning. Then we’ll dig into different approaches to find the right film & TV for you to watch in the languages you’re learning. Finally, I’ll share some third-party tools that you might want to try.

How to adjust Netflix settings for better language learning

Before we even start to look for new film & TV to watch in different languages, we can check out settings to make the most of Netflix for language learning. Here’s how…

Create a separate profile for language learning if you share an account

Once you’re signed up for Netflix, you have the option you make multiple profiles.

What I recommend to begin with, especially if you share an account, is to create a new profile for language learning.

It’s really simple to do.

When you log in to Netflix on any account, it’s the first screen you see. Click “add profile” and name your new profile. It’ll now appear on your main page.

safari extension netflix language learning

Now click “manage profiles” underneath the profile icons. A pencil will appear on top of each image. Click your new language learning profile.

safari extension netflix language learning

You can change the language of your profile here and it stays the same on your other profile(s) so you get a little extra language practice but no-one else is distracted or annoyed at you for changing it!

You can also change your profile photo. I picked Titus from the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt because his face is like “You learn that language, girl”. But of course, this step is optional.

Now when you click your new profile image, you’ll be taken to the main Netflix page. All the text will be in the language you switched your profile to, but of course programming will remain open. Here’s a synopsis of the madness that is Riverdale in español.

I just learnt the word agallas (guts). Thanks, Betty.

Change Subtitle Appearance

Do you ever find yourself squinting at the screen to read the subtitles? You can fix that. Let’s do it before we start watching stuff.

Once logging into your language profile, click your profile photo. Select “Account” from the drop-down list.

safari extension netflix language learning

Scroll down on the account page and you’ll see this…

You can also change your profile language here (like we just did) but we’re going to click “Subtitle appearance”.

Going beyond a simple binge watch, Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners. ➔

Here’s where you can make subtitles bigger, change the background colour, font etc.

However, if you’re watching on an Apple device, you’ll need to configure this within the Settings on that device. This help page from Netflix shows you how to do this for various devices.

Now you’ve got a separate profile and your subtitles are set, you can begin hoarding multilingual content into your new lovely clean list. Woohoo!

How to find the best film & TV to watch on Netflix in other languages

There’s A LOT of stuff on Netflix. Filtering through it all can be tricky sometimes. The following will help you find the best stuff to watch on Netflix for language learning.

Finding film & TV to watch with audio in another language

This is easier to do on a computer.

Start by visiting netflix.com/browse/audio . You’ll see this…

Going beyond a simple binge watch, Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners. ➔

Now click “English” (or whatever language it says there on your profile depending on the language it’s set to).

Going beyond a simple binge watch, Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners. ➔

To find content with audio in the languages from the list, simply click on the language you’d like. We’ll try Mandarin…

Going beyond a simple binge watch, Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners. ➔

Great!…but this is clearly all content that’s originally been created in another language (mostly English, I think here).

If this happens to you, next click “suggestions for you” by ‘Sort by:’. Switch this to “A-Z”. Here’s what we get now…

Going beyond a simple binge watch, Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners. ➔

This looks more promising!

As you would with Netflix generally, when you find something you’re interested in watching, hover over it and click the “+” to add to your watch list, or click the down arrow for more info.

Finding film & TV to watch with subtitles in another language

Remember that little “Audio” next to the drop-down box for the languages? When you click that one, you can switch your search to “subtitles” and then select the language again.

You might also want to switch and sort by A-Z but it’s not as helpful here, because the content with audio in a certain language doesn’t always align to having subtitles in that language too.

Going beyond a simple binge watch, Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners. ➔

And of course, when you find something you’re interested in, add it to your watch list in the same way.

Finding stuff when your language isn’t in the drop-down list

Of course, thousands of languages in the world. They’re not all going to be on Netflix, and all the ones that are on Netflix aren’t necessarily going to fit in the drop-down list. So there’s more.

If the language you’re learning doesn’t appear in the drop-down list, it’s time to head to the search bar. Keep it simple. Start by typing in the name of that language. We’ll use Indonesian as our example…

Going beyond a simple binge watch, Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners. ➔

No way! Some of these are definitely Indonesian – I can tell from the names alone. Straight on the watchlist.

Let’s see if there’s any more hidden away. Use the clickable options next to “Explore titles related to:” to have a browse around and see if there’s any others that interest you.

When I clicked “Indonesian Movies & TV” from here, this helped by actually limiting the list to just these things so the list ended. Woohoo! No more overload winding back around to Stranger Things and House of Cards.

Going beyond a simple binge watch, Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners. ➔

Finding stuff to watch with category codes

The next thing you might want to try is category codes. This one is particularly helpful only for a limited range of languages.

Netflix has some pretty obscure genres for its content. This can be used to our advantage. Click here for a full list of Netflix categories.

I found categories for French, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Greek, Czech, Thai, Filipino…But none for Arabic, Portuguese, Swedish, Norwegian among plenty others, I’m sure.

You could also try searching for director names (Movies by Pedro Almodóvar = 3968) or regions (Eastern European Comedies = 3892).

But even if there’s a category for it, that doesn’t necessarily mean there’ll be any content. For example “Dramas directed by Jean-Luc Godard” (3598) has nothing on Netflix (at least at the time of writing on UK Netflix).

Going beyond a simple binge watch, Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners. ➔

Finding stuff to watch about people and places

Of course, language learning is much more than just words. It’s also about learning more about the culture, people, and places associated with that language.

The easiest way to do this on Netflix is to try searching the name of countries or regions.

You may find that Netflix hasn’t quite got the memo that Latin America has more to offer than drug lords and cocaine, but you may also get lucky and find something to watch.

For example, when I type “Paraguay” into the Netflix search, I get this…

Going beyond a simple binge watch, Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners. ➔

In and amongst the titles on display (7 of 18, almost half are about drugs/Escobar/El Chapo. Geez.) you can spot Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown, where there’s an episode all about Paraguay. (It’s actually a really good one. He finds out about his ancestors who moved to Paraguay. He’s also helped out by Romy, who we interviewed for Language Stories. )

The broader you are here, the more likely you are to find stuff. For example, if I type in “Latin America”, I’m given some options again next to “Explore titles related to”, which I wasn’t when I searched “Paraguay”.

I clicked “Latin American Documentaries” and guess what?…Only TWO about Escobar and El Chapo! Hooray!

Going beyond a simple binge watch, Netflix for language learning is great. Here's the Ultimate Guide to Netflix for language learning + your free Netflix Study Pack for Language Learners. ➔

This means you can learn about Che Guevara, el asado, Machu Picchu and more. All useful things to support your Spanish language studies.

The Best Ways to Learn a Language on Netflix with Extra Tools

Enhancing netflix with third-party extensions + general tips.

There’s a few helpful options out there to help you really make the most of Netflix for language learning. However, as these are all third-party, Netflix could decide at any point they want to block them, ban their use etc. So they could disappear.

With that in mind, I won’t give you a full walk-through of each. Instead I’ll just tell you what they’re all good for. Most of them are Google Chrome extensions, which means you’ll need to be watching Netflix on a computer to take advantage of them.

Nflx Multi Subs – Amazing! Download it, close and reopen your Chrome browser and you can watch stuff with 2 sets of subtitles. You’re limited to the subtitles that Netflix provides, so sometimes there’s a limited choice.

Language Reactor – (Formerly ‘Language Learning With Netflix’) A Chrome extension that adds a lower bar to your Netflix playback window and gives you subtitles in 2 languages. You can auto-pause, and play with the vocabulary highlighter too depending on your level. For example, I tested this watching a French film, with Portuguese subtitles selected on Netflix, and “Translated into: Esperanto” selected on the Language Learning with Netflix bar. Pretty cool.

Lingvo – Lingvo is a Chrome extension that requires your phone. Watch Netflix on your browser and open the Lingvo page on your phone’s internet browser. Enter the code from your Lingvo Chrome icon on your computer and you can view subtitle translations on your phone. Again, clickable vocabulary to help you learn. Helpful if you’ve seen stuff before and don’t mind looking away from the screen to check bits you don’t understand.

Sufli – Another option for subtitles on Chrome. This one has fewer options but is pretty easy to use and has a wide range of languages because it draws from the Google Translate list.

There’s a few more options too including Subtly but I haven’t tried those ones. Have a play around and see which suits you best.

Useful general tricks – This Buzzfeed post has some helpful tips and tricks to make the most of Netflix in general.

What to Do Next With New Language from Film & TV

Give it Context – If you’ve made a note of new vocab as you’ve been watching, it can be helpful to give it context to make it more likely you’re actually remember it. Write your own sentences using the new words.

Add it to Your Resources – Use Memrise for vocab? Make your own course to add your new words to so it’s ready to be learnt in the place you already go to for your vocab practice. For more ideas on how to learn vocab, see Vibrant Vocab .

Bring it to Your Teacher – Sharing your new words and phrases with your teacher can be a great topic for a conversation class. Plus, it gives you a chance to discuss the film itself. Describing the story of what you saw, and even giving it a little review is a great speaking and writing prompt. If you don’t have a teacher yet, italki* is a good place to start to find an online language teacher.

Watch & Learn

Want to fully understand the process I share pages for in the free pack? Watch & Learn is just $9 USD and guides you through that and more. You get on demand video lessons (36 minutes so it’s super binge-able!), English subtitles, and a guide and workbook in Notion.

The Browser Apps That Teach You Languages While You Watch TV

safari extension netflix language learning

Binge-watching Narcos a few weeks ago taught me two things: (1) to become a Colombian drug lord, you must be willing to smuggle cocaine in just about everything, including airplane tires, and (2) I’ve been pronouncing at least half of the Spanish words I know incorrectly. I couldn’t tell the difference myself, of course. An app did.

It didn’t come as a surprise to me that my Spanish skills were far from decent. Learning a new language was one of the hobbies I picked up when the pandemic hit, and naturally, like most people, I turned to Duolingo. But its gamified goals were tedious. Barring a handful of sentences, I soon realized I still couldn’t actually speak Spanish. Luckily, I stumbled upon a service that lets me practice while doing what I already spend hours doing every day: watching movies and TV shows online.

Called Language Reactor , it allows you to capitalize on the treasure trove of streaming catalogues at your fingertips to exercise any new language you may be learning. It plugs into the Netflix website through a Google Chrome extension and lets you watch shows and movies with two sets of captions at the same time, one in the dialogue’s native language and the other translated into the tongue you’re familiar with. It lets you hover over an individual word in the subtitles to understand its phonetic transcription, pronunciation, usage, and more. You also have the option to browse through all the new vocabulary you’ve read in an episode, broken up by Language Reactor’s grade levels, and bookmark any words or phrases to refer to later.

Language Reactor isn’t the only such app. Another Chrome add-on called eJOY has a nearly identical collection of features, but in addition to Netflix and YouTube, it’s compatible with Amazon Prime Video, Coursera, Udemy, and TED. A similar service, Mate Translate , shows you a dual-caption layout on Netflix’s desktop site on a bunch of browsers, including Safari and Mozilla Firefox, and lets you access your saved words or lines from your iPhone. Another extension, Dualsub, offers dual-language captioning and currently supports 23 services, including HBO Max, Hulu, and Disney+, at varying levels of support . Rakuten Viki , a streaming platform exclusively for Asian TV shows and movies, has these language-learning features built into its interface.

Research shows that watching even one hour of foreign TV shows and movies per day can help effectively immerse learners into a new language. Thanks to their vast global catalogues, streaming sites such as Netflix have made this more approachable than ever, and these add-on apps let you take advantage of that to master the language you’re learning.

Even more specific studies have already dug into some of the benefits of these tools. In his research , Gilbert Dizon, an associate professor at the Himeji Dokkyo University in Japan, found that the use of dual subtitles through Language Reactor improved vocabulary learning and listening comprehension in learners. Even if a person watches a foreign-language TV show and/or movie every day for at least a month, Dizon told Vulture, the “gains could be substantial.” Professor Antonie Alm of the University of Otago in New Zealand discovered similar results in her research and argues that it’s easier for language learners to dive into a foreign TV series instead of a movie. Once you’re familiar with the show’s characters, their vocabularies, and their accents, you develop cognitive and emotional benefits that better equip you to pick up the intricacies of the language.

At the same time, these apps are no magic bullet. Although tuning in to foreign content is an engaging technique for boosting your language skills, Suzanne Graham, a language and education professor at the University of Reading in the U.K., says you’ll gain more from it if you’re already a bit advanced in the language you’re learning.

After trying them myself, I came to the same conclusion. Tools like Language Reactor work best for someone who already has a preliminary understanding of the language as well as its grammar. Duolingo taught me the words, but watching foreign-language shows helped me understand how to put them together and construct sentences. Listening to pronunciations in Duolingo’s robotic voice was, for instance, remarkably different from the way the actors talked in shows, and it took me a while to even recognize basic words.

That was the motivation behind Mate Translate, which has about 800,000 active users. Its Ukrainian founders struggled with learning English, as it’s not well taught in their country, and decided to develop an app that would allow people to bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and real-world speech, co-founder Andrii Liakh told Vulture.

A 33-year-old developer who identifies only as “Max” made a Language Reactor–like platform called Language Learning With Netflix and YouTube after having a similar experience with German-language courses. He moved to Germany from the Middle East and turned to YouTube to polish his speech. The pandemic sparked a wave of downloads for Max’s and Liakh’s tools, and any time new foreign content, like, say, Squid Game , goes viral on Netflix, they said in emails with Vulture, they witness a surge in users.

Graham also suggests that you switch off your first language’s captions entirely and follow only the foreign ones after a while. If you don’t know any words, you can always look them up. This promotes a sense of self-efficacy and progress, she said. If learners believe they can be successful in a challenging activity, like following a foreign TV show, they’re less likely to give up.

There are other ways to get the most out of language-learning extensions. Netflix has secret categories where you can browse all the shows and movies made in a particular language. And investing in a VPN (virtual private network) subscription to unlock country-specific content will give you more options to practice whatever language you’re learning.

More important, according to Dizon, is the fun factor. “Many of the participants in my research have remarked that watching authentic videos is much more interesting,” he said. Most foreign-language courses don’t assign watching something like Squid Game ’s murderous robot doll as homework.

A Few Browser Tools to Help You Become a Better Polyglot

Not all of these translation apps are created equal. Some are free, some are paid, and one is a streaming service unto itself.

Best Netflix extensions for Safari, Chrome, and Firefox on Mac

Idowu

Although the Netflix desktop app lets you access movies and shows conveniently, streaming Netflix via a browser brings more benefits with powerful extensions and Add-ons. The right browser extension can significantly enhance your streaming experience. Here, I will share the best Netflix extensions for Chrome, Safari, or Firefox on your Mac.

Best Netflix Extensions for Chrome on Mac

Here are the best Netflix extensions you can get on the Chrome browser. The best part is all the extensions are free to install and use!

1. Netflix Extended – Get rid of the fluffs – Editor’s choice

Netflix Extended extension for Chrome

Manually skipping all the movie intros, episode recaps, and intermittent interruptions every time on Netflix can frustrate your movie experience. You can remove them automatically and jump directly into the content with Netflix Extended. It’s also a fantastic extension to have if you hate spoilers. All it requires is a click to remove movie thrillers from your timeline.

Besides, the extension features keybinding options for setting custom playback navigations. Moreover, you can see the elapsed time for a video. This feature is a must-have if you always default on the time frame you set for your movie time. Although it features review ratings from IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, etc., you’ll have to look elsewhere for faster review information.

Overall, Netflix Extended allows for a more flexible usage of Netflix on Chrome. And if you feel your kids might not get along with the stringent settings, it has a deactivation option for kids’ profiles.

2. Teleparty – Watch movies with friends

Teleparty Netfilx Extension for Chrome

Can’t meet your friends right away? There’s no better way to get along virtually than hosting a watch party for the latest hit on Netflix. Teleparty Chrome extension makes streaming Netflix movies in sync with that special one easy. All you need to do is set up a watch party for a movie you’re currently streaming and share the sync link with friends.

Besides, you can choose to solely manage the watch group or make it flexible for others to control. The best part is your recipients don’t need to install the extension at their end to join a party. They only need to click the link, get onboard using the Teleparty icon, and enjoy streaming. The extension is also available on Firefox as Netflix Party .

3. Netflix Flip – Stream movie from any angle

Netflix Flip Netflix Extension for Chrome

Do you prefer to flip your laptop for convenience or use it in the tab mode sometimes? Netflix Flip is a simple Chrome extension that lets you rotate videos by 360 degrees so you can enjoy playback from any angle.

That’s not all. If you spot an exciting detail that may not be obvious to others and want to share, zooming clearly in the browser has gotten better with Netflix Flip.

4. Netflix Picture-in-Picture – Best for multi-tasking

Netflix Picture-in-Picture Extension for Chrome

Streaming Netflix via Chrome in picture-in-picture mode sounds right when you get busy with other menial tasks on your Mac. Although the Netflix mobile and desktop apps have this feature, it’s not possible while streaming via the browser. Thanks to the Netflix Picture-in-picture extension for making this multi-tasking feature possible on Chrome.

Using the extension is straightforward. Once installed, it automatically displays a picture-in-picture icon at the bottom-right corner of a movie you’re streaming on Netflix via the Chrome browser. Click this icon, and your favorite web series is played in an always-on-top window.

5. Trim – View movie ratings before watching

Trim Netflix Extension for Chrome

Checking critic’s ratings and reviews about a movie is the surest way to determine if it’s worth your time and attention. However, going through the rating aggregator’s website is also time-consuming. With the Trim extension, you don’t need to pause a movie to get its ratings from another website. It brings them to you right within the Netflix web app.

Featuring IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic ratings, Trim lets you know the thrilling value of a movie by simply clicking its thumbnail to view its details. As a plus, the extension also lets you quickly browse hidden categories on Netflix, making your favorite movie genres easier to find. However, you must sign in to the  Trim website to access the extension’s features.

Best Safari Extensions for Netflix

You’re not in isolation if you use Safari on Mac. While the Apple ecosystem is less permissible to third-party extensions , you’ll still find a few valuable ones for Netflix.

1. Smartplay – Multifunctional Netflix extension

Smartplay Netflix Extension for Safari

Smartplay is like the Netflix Extended version of Safari. Considering its multifunctionality, you may not need extra Netflix browser Add-ons once you install this powerful extension. Featuring IMDB ratings, playback control functions, and optimized video effects, there’s no better way to enjoy Netflix via Safari. You can automatically skip boring movie intros and series recaps.

It also features a playback multiplier effect that lets you speed up movies for a quick recap. While Netflix provides subtitles for most movies, Smartplay lets you optimize details like subtitle color, fonts, text size, and position to enhance your reading experience. However, all these features come at a cost, starting from as low as $4.99/month.

2. Popcorn for Safari – Get the best ratings

Popcorn for Safari Netflix Extension

A single rating source is sometimes not enough to judge a movie. If you want to tap into more rating sources before streaming a movie on the Netflix web app, Popcorn is the best Safari extension for the job on your Mac. Whether you want ratings from IMDb, Metacritic, or Rotten Tomatoes, just install Popcorn on Safari and view movie ratings by clicking its details.

To get the best of what Popcorn offers, you’ll need to grant the extension the appropriate permission on Safari. The extension is free for starters, and there are no intrusive ads to hinder your movie streaming.

Best Firefox Extensions for Netflix

Firefox can be frustrating with occasional IP censoring, but it could be an excellent Netflix streaming platform if you install the right Add-ons. Let’s quickly see some of the most valuable Firefox add-ons for Netflix on Mac.

1. Better Netflix – Add zooming functionality to Netflix

Better Netflix Extension for FireFox

Installing the Better Netflix add-on is one of the best ways to add more features to Netflix on Firefox. You can use it to zoom in and out objects in movies, increase screen aspect ratio, and view IMDB ratings. It also features shortcuts for enabling and deactivating mouse movements and viewing the aspect ratio stats.

Moreover, the Netflix extension lets you see the elapsed time in a playback. This adds a two-way timing stat to your playback, as you can see how long you’ve watched a movie and how long you have left. The only setback with Better Netflix is that clicking the IMDB button in the description takes you to the IMDB website rather than fetching the stat directly inside Netflix.

2. Metastream Remote – Watch Netflix with friends on Firefox

Metastream Remote Netflix extension for FireFox

Want to set up a watch party on Firefox and stream movies with many friends at once? Achieve this smoothly with Metastream Remote. Although you’ll have to install the add-on in your browser, the main event unfolds right inside Metastream Remote’s website. To create a synced watch session, visit the main website and paste the link to a movie you’re streaming on Netflix.

Copy the session link and share it with friends to start the watch party. Once your friends click to join a session, you must accept their request to connect to complete the setup. If it’s the first time you’re sharing a session link with a friend, they only need to open it, create a display name, install the extension on their browser, and jump into the synced session.

Want to discuss and analyze the movie? Chat away in the extra pop-up window. Keep in mind that Metastream Remote relies heavily on pop-ups. Ensure you enable pop-ups in your browser to get the best of it. Besides, this extension is also available for Chrome to watch Netflix together.

3. Film Scores for Netflix – Quickly see movie ratings

Film Scores for Netflix Extension for FireFox

Film Scores is the best Netflix add-on on Firefox to get more movie ratings from various aggregators, including TheMovieDb, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritics, FilmAffinity, and Trakt TV. Once installed, it attaches a quick rating score to every movie banner based on your rating source preference.

So, this is the easiest way to know if a movie is worth your time and data. You can change this preference by clicking the Extensions icon on Firefox, selecting Film Score, and going to Configurations. That’s not all; the add-on lets you turn off undesirable ratings. Simply click the description under a movie banner to view more ratings.

4. Netflix Category Browser – Sort movies easily

Netflix Category Browser Extension for Netflix

While the Netflix web app lets you browse by language and sort in alphabetic order, there’s no direct way to browse by categories. Solve this single challenging task using the Netflix Category Browser add-on on Firefox.

All you have to do is click the extension icon on Firefox, go to Netflix – Category Browser, and select your category and subcategory choices. This action will reload Netflix with the chosen options. Surf away to locate and start streaming the movie that catches your interest.

That’s it!

Kudos if you stream Netflix via a browser like mine. Now, you know the best way to enjoy your streaming with the ideal browser extension for the right task. Don’t hesitate to install a combination of these extensions to get everything you need to extend Netflix functionality and boost your Netflix experience.

Do you want to enjoy LR extension through iPad?

Hey guys!! We all knew that LR is the best Chrome extension for Netflix in the world when it comes to double subtitles. Sometimes, I want to lay on my bed and binge-watch episodes by using an iPad. However, it seems that we only can enjoy LR service through MacOs or windows systems (notebook or desktop). It would be great if LR can develop and explore more possibilities of adding extensions on Safari so that iPad users can enjoy their favorite movies anytime anywhere (iPad is lighter~). I hope it will come true!

Currently, the Safari browser already supports extensions, and I hope LR can be used on the iPad.

Any word from LR on getting us iPad users an extension in Safari? iPad and LR would be the ideal setup.

This Chrome extension lets you learn a new language by watching Netflix

Watch your shows with two subtitles on at the same time.

By Dami Lee

Learning a new language through immersion doesn’t mean you have to pack your bags and move to Europe for three months. Now, you just need to turn on Netflix. Language Learning with Netflix is a Chrome extension that lets you watch shows with two subtitles on at the same time so you can visually pair translations with dialogue and learn some new vocabulary in the process. It’s a clever service that makes use of Netflix’s massive catalog and all of the major languages in which it already offers subtitles, including Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

The extension was created by developers David Wilkinson and Ognjen Apic who experimented with making their own language learning software before collaborating on Language Learning with Netflix. “For some languages (Farsi, for example), there’s only a limited amount of learning materials available,” Wilkinson said in an email. “I think a lot of people would enjoy studying a language with material they are already familiar with.”

The tool works best as a supplement for people who already have some basic understanding of the language they’re learning. There’s a vocabulary-highlighting feature that grays out less common words, which is adjustable to match your vocabulary level. Hovering over a word produces a pop-up dictionary, and clicking the word lets you hear it. You can also slow down the dialogue or automatically pause playback at the end of every subtitle, so you can learn line by line. There’s even a catalog of recommendations for movies and shows that are good to study.

safari extension netflix language learning

The Chrome extension is free to use, but Wilkinson and Apic are planning to add more features, like additional subtitles for dubbed dialogue, which would only be available for paid users. “Netflix has alternative audio tracks for many well-known series, but the subtitles in other languages don’t match the audio,” Wilkinson said. “We’re considering creating new subtitles for these alternative audio tracks, so you could study German, for example, with Breaking Bad with matching German audio and subtitles.”

One of the few downsides is that the tool only works on Google Chrome, so you can’t use it with your Netflix app on tablets or streaming services like Roku or Apple TV. Hopefully, the service can make its way beyond browsers soon because it’s obvious that the potential for language learning through media is huge. Viki, a streaming service for Asian dramas , implemented a “Learn Mode” in 2017 that essentially does the same thing by showing two subtitles at once. The developers say they haven’t contacted Netflix yet, but “the project could likely go faster and further with their support.”

Lingo Layer is a browser extension that transforms your downtime of watching Netflix videos into valuable language learning experiences. It is tailored to individuals seeking to enhance their understanding of a new language in a natural, interactive context. This tool effectively addresses a key challenge in language learning: simultaneously comprehending spoken dialogue and accessing real-time translations in one's native language.

By listening to audio in your learning language while concurrently displaying multiple subtitles, Lingo Layer enables users to directly correlate the spoken words with their translations. This language learning method not only aids in immediate comprehension but also enriches the learning process by providing an immersive experience. The extension offers a practical and engaging way to learn, allowing users to see the language in action and understand its nuances through the context provided by the videos. Language Learning with Netflix: How to Use the Chrome Extension

Have you heard about language learning with Netflix software? It’s making life easier for language teachers and students around the world.

This Google Chrome extension takes the concept of “learning languages by watching movies” to a whole new level.

Language learning with Netflix builds on the idea that the best way to learn a language is by listening to it. This method has been recommended for years. Watching videos or listening to music in the language you’re trying to learn is a powerful way to improve your language skills.

The novelty here is the amount of useful tools that do exactly that, while making the most out of watching your favorite movies in Spanish.

In this post, we’ll discuss how you can improve your language skills by watching movies in Spanish; just what this “language learning with Netflix” software is, how to download it, and crucially, how to use it.

Learning Languages by Watching Movies

Can you really learn a new language simply by watching movies? Well, it’s not that simple. Research has shown that listening is the key element to effectively learning a language. By watching videos or movies in Spanish, for instance, you learn new vocabulary, idioms, and grammar patterns unconsciously .

That’s why, if you’re in the middle of your language learning efforts, it’s ideal to immerse yourself in your goal language. Make everything around you in Spanish, from your phone and Netflix account to the podcasts and playlists you listen to.

Doing this provokes you to think in Spanish and expose yourself to the speed and accent of native Spanish speakers.

What’s Language Learning with Netflix?

Language learning with Netflix is the acclaimed Google Chrome extension that helps you tolearn a new language while watching movies.

Also known as LLN, this tool allows you to watch films and series in foreign languages with two sets of subtitles, one in the original language and the other in your own language. LLN currently works in 17 languages and, yes, Spanish is one of them.

How to Download Language Learning with Netflix

To download language learning with Netflix, all you need to do is go to the Google Chrome Web Store and search for it. Or simply click here . Once on the LLN download page, click on the blue “Add to Chrome” button. It will install itself on your Chrome browser.

You’ll be automatically directed to an instructions page that explains how to set it up according to your needs.

Language learning with Netflix has been featured in Wired , The Verge , and The Guardian , among others. It’s been downloaded over a million times. Rest assured that LLN is a reliable software and your computer won’t be at risk by downloading it.

How to Use Language Learning with Netflix

The first thing to understand is that language learning with Netflix works as an extension to your Google Chrome browser. An extension is a software program in your browser that’s designed to enhance your user experience. This means that language learning with Netflix will only work in your Chrome browser. If you don’t have it yet, you can download it here .

Once you have downloaded Google Chrome and the language learning with Netflix extension, the first time you open Netflix it will ask you for your native language. For the purpose of this post, I chose English. Then it will ask you to turn off some Netflix tests that could interfere with the way LLN works.

Now, all you have to do is to choose your desired film or series in Spanish (I chose Money Heist ). When it starts running you’ll see the learning languages with Netflix features all around the video.

Click on the settings icon on the top right hand corner and adjust the settings according to your needs. The original audio was (European) Spanish due to Money Heist ( La Casa de Papel ) being a Spanish show. I set the Netflix subtitles to (European) Spanish and the translation language to English (Human Translation).

Free Trial or Pro Version Features

You can sign up for a free trial of the pro version of language learning with Netflix. This allows you to choose between human and automatic translation. Each has its benefits. Automatic translation translates every spoken word as pronounced, while the human one interprets idioms and expressions. I don’t recommend using both, as it becomes overwhelming to read so many subtitles. Depending on your specific needs, choose the translation that fits you better.

The image below shows how the automatic translation can be selected once you sign up for the free trial.

On the settings menu, you can also select to show a mini-dictionary, highlight specific vocabulary according to your level of Spanish, change the reproduction speed, and save a specific subtitle.

Overall, language learning with Netflix is an easy-to-use software that provides a greater amount of language and subtitles control in movies and series, and other useful features to help you improve your Spanish while having fun enjoying your favorite Netflix shows and films.

Use LLN as a Tool to Improve your Spanish

Although language learning with Netflix is a great software to help you work on your Spanish, it’s important to note that as most language learning hacks , watching movies is just another useful tool (among a wide array that complement each other) to help you learn a new language.

Developing your listening skills is important, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need to work on your speaking, writing, and reading skills, too. Homeschool Spanish Academy uses a comprehensive approach that takes  the four language learning skills into account, with a strong focus on speaking and listening.
