The Best Travel Photography of 2023

There's nothing quite like the power of a photograph to truly capture the heart of a place—and awaken the travel bug inside us all. But with social media inundated with images of far-flung destinations, the search for high-quality travel photography can often be a tougher pursuit. So, in place of scrolling, why not let an expert panel of judges filter out the best of the best for you?

This week, the international Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) awards announced their 2023 winners, selected from more than 20,000 images taken by amateur and professional photographers from over 150 countries. The judging of the competition takes place over three rounds; all 16 judges are leading photographers or experts in the field and are not made aware of the identity or nationality of any entrants.

Ranging from ethereal landscapes of the Italian countryside to striking portraits in Pakistan and Russia , the winning shots—including the celebrated work of Travel Photographer of the Year AndreJa Ravnak—reflect a “subtle elegance," says TPOTY founder Chris Coe.

"This comes through in both of AndreJa’s winning portfolios; one takes us into simple landscapes, with delicate colors and a textural beauty, the other into the hop fields, out of season and undressed ready for the next planting," Coe says. “Neither are obvious subjects, neither photographed at an optimal time of year, and yet they are both engaging and rather beautiful.”

Ravnak's winning submissions consists of eight shots photographed in the farmlands of Italy , the Czech Republic , and Slovenia .

“From my personal experience, I know it's not easy to judge photography. Images are not measurable, so being a judge is a complex task and responsibility,” says Ravnak, a professional architect from Slovenia. "Congratulations to all the winners; together, we are enthusiastically documenting this wonderful world, and perhaps this is a small contribution, a reminder to preserve its wonder for future generations.”

Below, see the 2023 winners of the Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) awards, featuring Japan's Lake Shirakawa , volcanic eruptions in Iceland , Shamanic rituals in Siberia , wildebeest migration in Kenya —and more.

Overall Winner—The Travel Photographer of the Year 2023 (AndreJa Ravnak, Slovenia) : “Early in the spring, the first rains allow wheat to grow in the rolling fields. Due to the cold nights, the landscape is often shrouded in beautiful mists on clear mornings during this period. This agricultural landscape is sparsely populated, with land being used to its fullest potential. Farms are located on the top of individual hills.”

Overall Winner—The Travel Photographer of the Year 2023 (AndreJa Ravnak, Slovenia) : “In search of suitable land for cultivating fertile soil for agricultural purposes, humans have sometimes covered entire hilly landscapes with fields. Hills without natural vegetation are very exposed to erosion, which creates unusual waves on the slopes. This agricultural landscape looks like a soft, undulating carpet, completely otherworldly, as if it had been created by AI. In addition to erosion, the problem with these intensively cultivated areas is also the increasing exhaustion of fertile soil.”

Overall Winner—The Travel Photographer of the Year 2023 (AndreJa Ravnak, Slovenia) : “A tractor driver maneuveres a high trailer with a crew of workers on top, manually tying strings to steel cables for hop growing. In the spring, the fields must be prepared for a new season and new strings must be strung. The process is done by hand, but there is not enough interest in this type of work in Slovenia, so hop growers hire workers from abroad every year. Winner, Landscape and Environment Portfolio (Armand Sarlangue, France) : “A lush mountain range covered of moss in the Highlands, with a river snaking between the reliefs from the above glaciers. It will carry precious sediments along the lands before joining a bigger river system, up to the coasts of Iceland where it will connect with the great ocean.”

Lake Shirakawa, Japan

Winner, Best Single Image in a Landscape and Environment Portfolio (Kazuaki Koseki, Japan) : “For a period from the end of winter to early summer, Lake Shirakawa is filled with water from melting snow and a ‘submerged forest’ appears. The water in the lake changes colour between light blue and light green, and mist, combined with the reflections which look like a submeged forest create a fantastic landscape. In April, the season of sprouting had arrived in the submerged forest. In the soft light before sunrise, the submerged forest quietly welcomed the morning. I chose a bluish time before sunrise to erase the reality and emphasize the fantastic sight, and set the shutter speed to 30 seconds to flatten the water surface.”

We all love an incredible story, especially when it’s accompanied by stunning visuals, exceptional depth, and a viscerally appealing design orientation. If you’re like us, you’ve likely fostered an appreciation for the creative side of things — whether it’s the design, caliber, or personability of an editorial (or its contributors). That being said, reading the industry’s most prolific magazines might leave you feeling a bit transitional. So, we’ve decided to create a listing of our favorite outdoor adventure magazines — the ones that live to illustrate, portray, and enamor. You’re not going to find “acceptable” photography, wordplay, or story choice here; instead, you’ll be treated to a journey of genre-defining stimulation. Each of these publications will take you on a journey that you’ll never forget — so, take the time to sit back, relax, and submit to a deep dive into our recommended experiences.

What makes a good outdoor magazine.

Expertise: Like with any magazine, you want to feel like the writers know what they’re talking about. That’s why you’re reading, after all.

Niche: Within the broad category of the outdoors , there are many umbrellas, from sport to adventure to travel. Below, we have magazines that focus on boating and surfing, while others are more open-ended and let the current issue’s topic dictate its content.

Photography: More than anything these days, what separates print media from online media are the images. You can often get the same text on the internet, but viewing excellent photography in person is a different experience entirely. Not to mention, your living room will look much better with a coffee table full of pretty pictures.

Frequency: For any magazine, the frequency of its release is important. If you’re an avid reader, you may want something that comes to your doorstep every few weeks, while those slower to get through their monthly magazines may want something that comes less frequently so that they don’t wind up with a pile of unread issues stacked up. Whether you’re looking for a monthly publication or a yearly one, we’ve got you covered.

Ink & Card Stock: Another benefit of print media is the tactile experience of feeling the pages in your hand. As such, heavy card stock featuring super-high-quality printing can level up a magazine to the quality of a coffee table book. This is more common for quarterly and semi-annual publications who might charge more per issue.

Inspiration 20 Travel Photographers You Should Know

“My life is shaped by the urgent need to wander and observe, and my camera is my passport.” – Steve McCurry

Intrepid and visionary, photographers have long ventured forth to document their journeys and capture the essence of the places they explore. In celebration of our 2023 Travel Photography Award , (open for entries until the end of August) we’ve curated a list of 20 photographers, past and present, whose inspiring images embody the unique allure of travel.

1. Steve McCurry

Steve McCurry , the esteemed judge of our current Travel Award , is a globally-renowned figure in the world of photography. His remarkable oeuvre encompasses some of the most iconic images of our time and showcases the awe-inspiring beauty and cultural diversity of our planet.

Born in Philadelphia in 1950, McCurry studied cinematography at Pennsylvania State University, after which he worked as a staff photographer for the local newspaper Today’s Post . However, driven by his passion for travel and photography, he embarked on a journey to India, a country that would become synonymous with his name due to the stunning images he captured throughout his career. It was this inaugural trip that sparked the epiphanic realization, “if you wait, people will forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view”, setting the foundation for a remarkable career and some truly captivating images encompassing every corner of the globe.

2. Inge Morath

One of the most influential photographers in the history of the medium, Inge Morath travelled extensively throughout her career, forming close relationships with the places she visited through her absolute immersion in the local culture. The remarkable images she captured, display her wonderful artistry and serve as fascinating mementos of their time, whilst demonstrating the profound potential of color photography long before it gained widespread acceptance.

3. Michael Yamashita

Few photographers convey the sheer joy of travel like Michael Yamashita . Over the past three decades, he has embarked on a journey around the world, capturing breathtaking images of its landscapes and people.

Though, throughout his career, Yamashita has photographed on six different continents, it is his work in Asia that has become particularly renowned. With an Asian Studies major from Wesleyan University and Japanese heritage, Yamashita has become an expert in the region and has photographed extensively in China, Japan, Southeast Asia, and India, capturing images that articulately convey the cultural diversity and stunning beauty of this fascinating continent.

4. Denis Dailleux

Though he has photographed various locations, Denis Dailleux is inseparably linked to Egypt , a country with which he has had a long and complex love affair, that has engendered some truly stunning imagery. His images convey a deep understanding of the Egyptian people and their culture, capturing their humanity and resilience.

He first visited the country in 1992, to join his Egyptian lover whom he had met in Paris a year earlier, and immediately fell in love with the country, captivated by its beguiling beauty and the warmth and generosity of its people.

He spent the next three decades visiting the country (before eventually, living there for several years), capturing its unique essence with love, tenderness, profound respect, and a masterful eye for form, light, and color.

5. Martine Franck

One of the finest practitioners of her time, and, like her husband Henri Cartier-Bresson, a major proponent of the humanist style, Martine Franck spent much of her life traversing the globe, capturing utterly compelling depictions of everyday life with remarkable grace and artistry. Her subjects and locations were as diverse as Tibetan temples, and industrial Northern English towns, whilst she also photographed her homeland extensively, notably in 1976, when she and four female compatriots, were commissioned by La Fondation Nationale de la Photographie to document their countrymen and women on vacation, during which she captured her now iconic photograph ‘Swimming Pool Designed by Alain Capeilleres, La Brusc’.

6. Alex Webb

“Most of my projects seem to start as exploratory journeys with no visible end in sight.” — Alex Webb

Renowned photojournalist, and judge of our 2020 Street Photography Award (alongside his wife and fellow photographer Rebecca Norris-Webb) Alex Webb is a master of capturing the decisive moment, rendering images filled with energy and movement that communicate brilliantly the atmosphere of the scene. While he has photographed extensively in his homeland, Webb is best known for his vibrant and dynamic work in Latin America and the Caribbean. His images capture the region’s unique atmosphere, rich colors, and intricate details, offering a captivating glimpse into this part of the world.

7. Maggie Steber

One of the finest photographers of her generation, Maggie Steber has dedicated her life to documenting some of the most important stories of our time, a mission that has taken her to some 70 countries, and encompassed everything from the African slave trade to natural disasters. Forthright and rooted in compassion, her images, which have graced the pages of many of the world’s most important publications including, National Geographic, The New York Times Magazine, and The Guardian, cut to the heart of the human condition, leaving a lasting impact on viewers worldwide.

8. Frédéric Lagrange

Frédéric Lagrange is a French-born photographer whose breathtaking imagery showcases the dramatic beauty and cultural diversity of our world. Over the last decade and a half, he has traveled extensively, visiting approximately 100 countries across almost every continent, focusing particularly on secluded shores and remote areas, such as the wild and rugged Wakhan Corridor in northeastern Afghanistan. His stunning images, which have been published in The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and The New Yorker (among others) evoke a sense of intrepidity and solidify his position as one of today’s most talented travel photographers.

9. Sebastião Salgado

One of the medium’s most masterful living practitioners, Brazilian photojournalist Sebastião Salgado is renowned for his powerful monochromatic images that tell the human stories behind some of the most important issues of our age.

During the course of his near-five decade-long career, he has traversed the globe, capturing extraordinary images, though it is perhaps his depictions of his homeland for which he is best known. In 1986, he travelled to the notorious Serra Pelada gold mine, to photograph some of the 50,000 workers who worked in terrible conditions. His most recent project, the landmark, Amazonia a series of stunning images of the landscapes and people of the world’s largest rainforest captured during a series of trips over the course of six years, is one of his most impressive, communicating the dramatic beauty, incredible biodiversity, and rich cultural heterogeneity of what the photographer calls “paradise on earth”, and thus highlighting the importance of its conservation at what is a crucial tipping point in the fight against climate change.

10. Pia Riverola

One of the best-known travel photographs of recent years, Pia Riverola , is renowned for her dreamy, pastel-hued renderings, which flawlessly capture the very essence of their subject matter.

Whether it’s vibrant flower markets in Mexico City, neon-lit and rain-drenched streets in Tokyo , or the lush landscapes of South American jungles, Riverola ‘s photographs exude a nostalgic and dream-like quality, displaying her masterful understanding of light and inducing a powerful sense of wanderlust.

11. Bruno Barbey

One of the finest photographers of our time, Moroccan-born, French photographer Bruno Barbey, has spent the last five decades travelling the world capturing powerful images that display his unique artistic voice and intrepidity. Over the years he has photographed in Brazil, China, India, his homeland France, and Morrocco, his birthplace, returning on numerous occasions to capture stunning, color-rich images that convey the unique essence of the country.

12. Jimmy Nelson

Judge of our recent Portrait Award , Jimmy Nelson, has dedicated the last ten years to documenting indigenous cultures around the world, which face increasing threats to their traditions and ways of life.

Nelson ‘s adventurous spirit was ignited during his childhood through his father’s work as an exploratory geologist. His first major project involved an epic journey on foot across Tibet in 1987, while seven years later, he documented the newly-opened People’s Republic of China in his acclaimed project “Literary Portraits of China,” which was exhibited in Tiananmen Square before touring globally.

However, it was his subsequent travels around the world to photograph remote cultures using a traditional 50-year-old plate camera, that laid the foundation for the project for which he is best known. “Before They Pass Away”, comprises stunning portraits of 35 different indigenous communities across the globe, capturing their unique traditions and practices in the face of globalization and industrialization.

13. Jim Richardson

Though born in the US, Richardson is immensely proud of his Celtic roots and has spent much of his career focusing on Ireland and Scotland. The latter has been a particularly prominent subject, his fascination with the wild landscapes of the Scottish highlands and the remote islands off its western coastline, engendering a wealth of captivating landscape images that articulate its unique, rugged beauty.

14. Matthieu Paley

French-born Matthieu Paley is one of the finest contemporary travel photographers, whose practice focuses on remote areas, and those communities that call them home.

Working on assignments for National Geographic and other leading publications, he has captured profoundly fascinating photo essays on hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, Greenland’s Inuit and Afghanistan’s Kyrgyz nomads (which he did over the course of a decade), leading to a number of notable awards, including a 2017 World Press Photo award for his portrayal of a Uighur woman in western China.

15. Brooke Holm

The 2nd Prize Winner of our 2018 Color Award for her breathtaking depiction of an Icelandic landscape, Australian-American artist Brooke Holm is one of the most exciting emerging proponents of travel photography. Inspired by satellite imagery and therefore, captured almost invariably from above, her depictions of some of the world’s most beautiful natural scenery are akin to paintings. Rich in color, texture and form, they offer a divergence from conventional viewpoints, showing the natural world at scale, in an attempt to subvert traditional anthropocentric narratives and advocate for coexistence with our environment and its inhabitants.

16. Galen Rowell

Equal parts adventurer and photographer, Galen Rowell spent the majority of his extraordinary life traversing some of the world’s most lofty areas, and capturing stunning landscape images that convey the beauty of the subject.

Throughout his career, Rowell undertook assignments for prestigious publications like LIFE and National Geographic, fearlessly venturing into remote and unforgiving locations, capturing them with unmatched artistry that still resonates today. His work not only showcased the natural wonders of these landscapes but also left a profound impact on the field of photography, inspiring generations of landscape photographers and ensuring his legacy lives on through his work.

17. Ami Vitale

Considered one of the most important conservation photographers of her generation, Ami Vitale has spent her career travelling the globe, traversing more than 100 countries and capturing stunning images that illuminates the often-overlooked heroes and communities whose efforts to protect wildlife and the natural world are truly inspiring. A Nikon Ambassador and regular contributor to National Geographic, Vitale has received numerous awards and commendations over the years, among them a Lucie Humanitarian Award and numerous World Press Photo prizes, which stand as a testament to her dedication and talent in her field.

18. Jody MacDonald

Few can rival Jody MacDonald when it comes to intrepidity. The award-winning adventurer and photographer has visited over 100 countries and spent a decade travelling the globe on a 60-foot catamaran, on an expedition to uncover the most remote and untamed corners of the planet. Working on assignment for National Geographic and other leading publications, or commercial projects for the likes of Patagonia and Red Bull, MacDonald has photographed some of the harshest and most difficult-to-reach corners of the earth – from the Sahara to the Himalayas – capturing stunning images that communicate the wild beauty of our world.

19. Evelyn Hofer

Few, if any photographers in history captured the essence of cites in the manner of Evelyn Hofer , the enigmatic German-born photographer who, throughout her impressive career, travelled the world photographing its landscapes and people with rarely-matched grace and artistry.

Whether it was Dublin, Paris, Florence, or the cities of her adopted homeland, the United States, Hofer’s photographs capture the essence of the subject. Underpinned by a masterful understanding of form, light, and color, today they stand as timeless testaments to her artistic vision and her ability to reveal the profound beauty that exists within the tapestry of our world.

20. René Burri

best travel photography magazines

Travel magazines are great resources for inspiration and information. Inciteful articles go beyond the things to do in a destination and explore why you should visit in the first place. Hotel reviews, travel gear roundups, exploration of new trends, and interviews with interesting people in the travel industry keep you entertained through dozens of glossy pages.

Some travel magazines cover the globe, offering a chance to see exotic destinations in far-off lands. Other magazines stick closer to home, covering only regions or states. And then, special interest magazines cover topics like travel gear, outdoor recreation, and unique places to visit.

But when was the last time you picked up a travel magazine?

Browse through this list of travel magazines worthy of a subscription. Read the details of the magazine’s coverage, digital vs. print editions, and their publication frequency. And keep in mind – these make excellent gifts as well.

What about city magazines?

City magazines can offer additional insight into a destination, but not always. The magazines also include local news, shopping guides for home décor, and seasonal things to do around town. I recommend checking out city magazines when you travel but don’t get a subscription unless you visit that destination several times yearly.

The Best Travel Magazines To Inspire Your Next Adventure

Stuck at home? Perhaps you’re suffering from those post-trip blues? Unsure of where you want to go? Not to worry, here are the best travel magazines in the UK to inspire your next adventure…

I’ve always found magazines to be a great source of inspiration. Although, I do know what you’re thinking… Why buy travel magazines when plenty of content is available online? This may be true. However, searching the internet can sometimes lead to an overwhelming bombardment of repetitive information. When was the last time you stumbled across a truly unique article offering something of actual value? Buying a travel magazine gets you an extremely well-thought-out, original, and beautifully curated companion. Additionally, it’s a welcome change to have something physical to read instead of staring at a screen!

The Best Travel Magazines In The UK

National geographic traveller.

  • Format: Print/Digital
  • Published: 10 issues per year
  • Shelf Price: £5.25 (single physical copy)

Photo of National Geographic Traveller UK travel magazine.

National Geographic Traveller is one of the most popular travel magazines. It’s also my go-to publication when I’m seeking inspiration. The magazine was launched in the UK in December 2010 and has won multiple awards. It is the right choice for many different types of world explorers, especially those looking for jaw-dropping photography and inspirational travel writing.

If learning about culture and discovering some of the most spectacular corners of the globe interests you, then National Geographic Traveller will satisfy your curiosity. The magazine tends to have a very nature-focused theme and heavily encourages sustainable travel, which I’m sure you’ll agree is something we should all be incorporating into our adventures, near and far.

As you’d expect from a highly regarded travel magazine such as National Geographic, the pages are full of beautiful landscapes from remote destinations, thought-provoking features, and practical advice on immersing yourself in the journey of a lifetime at a slower pace. Learn about the places and people within while dreaming up your next big trip.

  • Published: 6 issues per year
  • Shelf Price: £6.45 (single physical copy)

Photo of Wanderlust UK travel magazine.

Taking the road less travelled is what Wanderlust magazine is all about. The publication was established in 1993 and has grown to become one of the UK’s leading independent travel magazines. Wanderlust has won numerous well-deserved awards and never fails to impress even the most hard-to-please traveller (like myself). This magazine is an excellent option for those hoping to experience the world through the eyes of impartial travel writers and expert photographers.

Wanderlust delivers the side of the story that many others tend to forget. It amplifies the voice of the communities it covers and reminds us of the importance of responsible, conscious, green travel. The magazine is a gold mine of off-the-beaten-track experiences and slow travel inspiration. With Wanderlust, you won’t have much trouble discovering the next exciting destination to add to your travel bucket list.

Each issue is jam-packed with inspirational stories, trip planners, advice, news, reviews and interviews. What’s more, the presentation of the magazine is beautiful. Wanderlust will help you discover and dig deeper into some of the most fascinating cultures… and places you’ve probably never thought about before. With its incredible travel photography and beautifully written articles, you can’t go wrong with Wanderlust magazine.

Condé Nast Traveller

  • Shelf Price: £5.99 (single physical copy)

Photo of Conde Nast Traveller UK travel magazine.

Condé Nast Traveller is the best choice for those with more stylish (and expensive) tastes. Everything about this publication screams luxury. Even the adverts feature products from some of the most prestigious designer labels in the world. Yet another of the country’s best, award-winning travel magazines. Perfect for scoping out the most desirable, super exotic destinations imaginable. Condé Nast Traveller was first published in the UK in 1997 and has been a source of high-end travel inspiration ever since.

For many of us (myself included), the expense of luxury travel isn’t justifiable. However, after reading Condé Nast Traveller, to say that you may be a little tempted is an understatement. Targeted towards wealthy travellers, the magazine gives us a glimpse of what it looks like to see the world in style. A peek at how the other half lives.

Read about classy restaurants, the best places to shop, luxurious accommodations, and with the help of the magazine’s impressive photography, imagine yourself in some far-off land. Even if it’s just for a moment, it’s worth it. If using your imagination doesn’t quite do it for you, Condé Nast Traveller might encourage you to splash out, treat yourself and begin exploring the expensive world of luxury travel.

  • Format: Print
  • Published: 4 issues per year
  • Annual Subscription: £11.96 (to cover postage)

As international travel resumes its pre-pandemic fervour, the UK’s premier independent travel magazine,  Escapism , has reemerged with a refreshed outlook and a commitment to providing readers with unparalleled travel experiences. Embarking on a bold new chapter, Escapism has unveiled a compelling proposition: a complimentary print subscription delivered straight to the doorsteps of eagerly awaiting readers across the UK.

Initially, I approached this subscription with a tinge of scepticism. However, my doubts were swiftly dispelled upon receiving the first issue. Escapism effortlessly rivals its premium counterparts, showcasing a wealth of features, insightful reviews, comprehensive guides, and captivating stories penned by its award-winning travel writers – all at no cost to the subscriber (other than postage).

True to its name, Escapism embodies the very essence of its title, transporting its readers in the blink of an eye, or in this case, the turn of a page.

Get yourself online and request your subscription today!

So, that’s my list of the best travel magazines in the UK. I hope that you found this blog post helpful. In case I didn’t make it obvious, each title mentioned has its distinct strength and style. Personally, National Geographic is my couch and coffee escape. Although, I do still occasionally find myself reaching for one of the others on the shelf. They all provide a different type of value.

Which travel magazine is your favourite? Have I missed any titles that should be included? Let me know in the comments below!

Sorry, I’m unaware of any free England travel magazines that can sent to the US. However, if you join the Wanderlust magazine mailing list on their website, they send a free digital version of each issue shortly after release. I’m unsure if this is available for US residents, but it could be worth a try!

5 Best Travel Magazines

We’ve listed the 5 best travel magazines below to help you escape to new destinations without leaving the house. Keep reading to find out the best bits of each magazine, and why we love them!

The Sunday Times Travel Magazine

This British travel magazine is published monthly. To date, it has virtually no online presence, with 95% of its content being print only. This exclusivity means that you’ve got to get your hands on a physical copy.

Sunday Times Travel Magazine

The Sunday Times Travel Magazine is ideal for destination snippets. They have fantastic double-page photographic spreads of lesser-known destinations with a summary of the history, travel tips and prices. They highlight a huge number of varied destinations in each magazine; perfect if you’re looking to stumble upon new ideas.

The Hotlist is an exclusive focus on travel trends; everything from trending destinations, fashions, and must-have travel accessories. This section comprises of digestible articles that can be read in a number of short sittings. The most interesting is the ’10 things we’re excited about’ segment, which shines a light on 10 events or facts from the travel world.

The Knowledge is your behind-the-scenes glimpse of the travel industry. It contains fascinating insider information from travel experts in a range of topics. Content such as travel photography tips, accommodation guides, and travel tips regularly feature.

Instant Escapes is a brilliant series of ‘cut out and go’ guides. These handy double-sided features can be snipped from the magazine and popped into your luggage so you have all of your destination information in one place. They feature a map, things to see and do, where to eat, where to shop and a tip from a local.

Why we love it…

The Sunday Times Travel Magazine is perfect for digestible articles, which are great for on the go or are easy to pick up and put down throughout the day. We love the variety of destinations they cover from European city breaks to luxury beach escapes. It’s impossible to not find an article that catches your interest in this magazine!

The Sunday Time Travel Magazine is no longer in print as of October 2020.

Wanderlust is a British magazine that publishes 10 issues per year. It was established in 1993 by Paul Morrison and Lyn Hughes, who found a gap in the market for a magazine combining their interests in wildlife, activities and cultural insights.

Best travel magazines - Wanderlust

Wanderlust is perfect for digging deep into destinations. They have some fantastic long articles giving detailed insights into the places and the people. The magazine has a strong focus on the authentic beauty of places; the landscape, wildlife, people, and culture.

Trip Planner is a huge feature spanning several pages. Each issue highlights a popular destination and provides all of the information you need to plan the perfect trip. Packed with maps, expert tips, and itineraries, you’ll be itching to make travel plans.

Travel Tips is a unique feature of reader recommended travel tips. In each issue, there is a specific destination focus, and readers who have visited can submit their travel tips. This remarkable concept lets you learn from regular travelers who have been there and done it.

The Big Read is a single-page feature that recommends travel-related books. As an avid reader, this section is a personal favorite as a great way to discover new books and authors.

Wanderlust sets out its philosophy very prominently at the beginning of every issue. They stress that responsible, conscious and sustainable travel is at the heart of everything that they do. This theme is constant throughout the magazine and we love them for that!

National Geographic Traveller

The longest-running publication on our list, National Geographic Traveller was first published in the US in 1984. Although no longer published in the US, the UK variant was first released in 2010 and is still a popular choice for travellers.

best travel photography magazines

As you’d expect from National Geographic, the magazine has a heavy focus on nature. It features several remote destinations with beautiful landscapes and outdoor activities. It is a perfect guide to relaxed escapes at a slower pace.

On the Trail is a short article which features a beautifully illustrated map. Each issue delves into the highlights of a chosen destination. The illustrated map walks you through a recommended itinerary while providing an overview of each stop along the way.

The Weekender feature provides an ideal two-day itinerary for a destination that is perfect for a weekend escape. It draws attention to the top things to see and do and recommends a breakdown of each day for the morning, afternoon and evening. No need to worry about travel planning, they’ve done the hard work for you!

Travel Geeks is the section of the magazine that shares all of the expert travel tips. Within here though, it also features some fascinating facts and figures about travel destinations and the travel industry. It also has some great travel accessory recommendations for those of us who are travel geeks at heart!

Although National Geographic Traveller is a travel magazine, what we take away from it is its focus on education. Rather than selling you must-see destinations, it scratches at the surface of places and unearths the authenticity of the place. National Geographic aims to teach us more about the people, places and cultures between its pages than the latest boutique hotels and hottest nightlife.

Lonely Planet

In 2009 the well-known travel publisher Lonely Planet added a monthly magazine to its repertoire.

Best travel magazines - Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet Magazine is packed full of unique destinations and travel experiences. If you think you’re bucket list contains all of the world’s must-see sights, think again! Lonely Planet will introduce you to destinations you didn’t even know existed.

The regular Photo Challenge competition runs on the magazine’s Instagram page . Each month they will announce a theme for the photo submissions, then publish the winning shots in the magazine. It’s a great way to witness travel photography by other readers.

The Life Changer segment asks a travel writer to reflect on a trip that made them think differently about the world. These personal accounts of self-discovery remind us that travel is so much more than just ticking countries off a list. It’s a poignant reminder of just how much we can learn about ourselves by traveling the world, and how these experiences shape us.

The Urban Edit is a series of cut-out guides to a selection of the world’s bustling cities. Covering everything from where to eat and drink, to how to see the cities on a budget and even the best gift shop souvenirs. These guides are a great way to see popular cities from a different perspective.

Without a doubt, our favourite thing about Lonely Planet Magazine is its focus on photography. While all of the magazines we’ve listed have stunning photos, Lonely Planet makes the images their focus. The majority of the features are made up of huge graphics and a smaller amount of text, making you feel like you’re truly experiencing the destination on the pages.

Condé Nast Traveller

Condé Nast was first published in the UK in 1997, but its American counterpart was established ten years earlier. The US variant has won 25 National Magazine Awards and the name certainly holds a lot of weight in the world of travel.

best travel photography magazines

Everything about Condé Nast screams luxury. While writing this, I’m lusting over a £5,000 handbag featured on one of their pages. While many of us can’t always justify the expense of luxury travel, Condé Nast gives us a glimpse of it through their pages.

Condé Nast themselves describe the Word of Mouth feature as ‘new and ground-breaking travel updates.’ There’s probably no better way to articulate what this section achieves. It shines a light on fascinating travel trends they have unearthed and certainly makes for inspiring reading.

The Style File takes inspiration from destinations and global celebrations to provide some travel-inspired fashion advice. While the featured items usually come with an eyewatering price tag, the section seamlessly merges travel and lifestyle in a way no other travel magazine has achieved.

Condé Nast regularly host Traveller Events . These events are aimed at celebrating the culture, food and history of destinations, and are a great way to get a taste of a destination before you even visit it. The magazine features a fascinating glimpse into these glamorous events to whet your appetite.

The Condé Nast Traveller magazine is a work of art. The atmospheric photography and jaw-dropping destinations are more akin to a coffee table hardback than a travel magazine. Although the majority of its features focus on luxury in excess, a flick through its pages is a great way to live vicariously for a few fleeting moments, for those of us who are unlikely to experience their escapes first-hand.

Matjaz Krivic wins the competition with poignant rhino picture

Travel Photographer of the Year Awards 2022 winners

The Travel Photographer of the Year awards has today announced the winning images from the 2022 edition of the competition! If you haven't caught the travel bug and made plans for 2023 getaways just yet, you definitely will after seeing these stellar shots captured from all around the world.

The Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) is one of the most prestigious photography awards in the world, and the high standard of imagery from this year's selection of winners is truly astounding. Taken on an array of the best cameras , they prove that you don't have to use the best travel camera or the best lenses for travel to get great pictures.

Matjaz Krivic from Slovenia has been awarded the title of Travel Photographer of the Year 2022 with his photo series showcasing emotive portraits of man and mammal, photographing his subject, Zachary Mutai, with Najin – one of the world’s last two remaining Northern White rhinos. Zachary is Najin's keeper, and their bond is tender. The images were captured at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya.

Travel Photographer of the Year Awards 2022 winners

"I am particularly delighted for the overall winner. Matjaz has been entering Travel Photographer of the Yearsinceour very first year-2003–and has secured a number of individual category awards with us over the past two decades. Now he has finally landed the ‘big one’ in our 20th year,” shares Chris Coe, founder of TPOTY.

Krivic has stated: “I am honored to have my work recognized and acknowledged by the judges of the Travel Photographer of the Year awards. This competition is special to me since I have been with it from its beginning in 2003 when I was given a Judges’ Favourite Award. Now, 20 years later I received their highest award which makes me very proud and means a lot to me." His image was shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV .

"Travel and photography have been my passion and a big part of my life since I remember and this award inspires me to continue with my journey" he concludes.

Aside from his prestigious title, Krivic will receive a new Fujifilm X100V camera, as well as £1000 ( approximately $1,240 / AU$1,742) cash from TPOTY, plus a personalized leather portfolio book or iFolio from Plastic Sandwich, Radiant Photo imaging software, and a membership to the Royal Photographic Society.

Travel Photographer of the Year Awards 2022 winners

The Young Travel Photographer of the Year title was awarded to Cal Cole, age 18, based in Manchester, UK. Cal has a focus on themes of melancholy, dystopia, and loneliness in his images of cityscapes - but the results are truly captivating.

The judges spoke of Cal's work highly, stating that “Travelling the world begins on your own doorstep and it is great to see a young photographer honing their skills not with the exotic, but with a less glamorous but still popular destination, and doing do so in such a creative fashion.”

Cal used a Nikon D3200 with an 18-135mm lens to capture the image above.

Travel Photographer of the Year Awards 2022 winners

18-year-old Isabella Smith from Tennessee, USA, was also awarded with the title of Young TPOTY in the 15-18 age category. In 2018, aged just 14, Smith was awarded the title of overall winner of Young Travel Photographer of the Year. Her images might be a little different, but that's what the judges loved about them.

The final Young TPOTY winner in the 14 years and under age category was Kaia Tham, aged 14, born in Australia but now residing in Lisbon, Portugal as a student. Tham shoots purely on an iPhone and her work with reflections shows a unique and different perspective of how she sees the world.

Runners-up for the Young TPOTY awards included Zhiyu Zheng, age 14 from China, and Rohan Shah, age 14 from Kenya.

Travel Photographer of the Year Awards 2022 winners

“Our latest winners form a fascinating collection of images. From the intensely powerful to the exquisitely subtle, sensitive, and beautiful, they reach every corner of the world and cover every facet of traveling with a camera. Conservation and sustainability permeate the collection and illustrate the role which photography can play in creating awareness of the issues facing our planet " Shares Coe.

Travel Photographer of the Year Awards 2022 winners

Coe continues, "This year, we’ll be first exhibiting these images in May at the Royal Photographic Society as part of World Photography in Focus. 2023 is TPOTY’s 21st award and we hope you’ll share your images with us again.”

8. We Miss These Magazines

Photography magazine can be either digital or print copies and although we are in an age that is completely moving towards digital, there is something special about holding a physical magazine, flipping through the pages to see the images printed on paper, and reading through the information. I personally think although the digital age has helped cut down on the use of paper, which hugely contributes to saving the environment, once in a while, it is good to get printed magazines and flip through the pages. It is definitely different from what you read digitally!

Photography Magazine subscriptions could be for personal use if you are a photographer or can be a rewarding gift to photographers . Be it a birthday or the holiday season, these subscriptions can be educative gifts that can help a photographer grow.

Another benefit of printed photography magazines is, when you travel, you can grab a copy of your favorite magazine and get through the journey. It could help inspire you with some ideas for your next photo shoot or if you are traveling to a destination as a travel photographer, getting one or two outdoor magazines relevant to your destination will give you an idea of locations and inspiration for travel photography. Moreover, printed copies are easy on your eyes!

There are a bunch of photography magazines focusing on various genres or levels of photographers – some are educative, some are technical, some inspirational, some for professionals, and some for beginners or hobbyists. Whatever genre of photography you enjoy or whatever level of photography you are in, there is something to suit everyone’s needs.

In this article, we have put together a bunch of photography magazines that we think are the best out there. We took into account certain factors that we thought a good photography magazine should include and filtered out the best magazines based on some of the criteria below.

Note:  There are loads of magazines out there with new ones coming into the market every time you go out to get one at the newsstand, but there are some magazines that stand out from the rest always. But again, it is a very personal thing when it comes to photography and what you like may be different from what someone else likes.

Update on January 20, 2022 : This article was mainly focused on showcasing print-only magazines. Since publishing this article in 2018, a lot of the magazines have either gone digital or have closed printing/publications during the pandemic. We have included updates with links to digital subscriptions, back issues, and archives wherever available.

1. What We Look For In A Great Photography Magazine

A great photography magazine needs to have certain qualities in order for it to be beneficial for the reader. Different photographers look for different content in a magazine and a magazine as a whole should be able to incorporate this content in there so that it can be read by a wide genre of photographers.

Here are some factors that we think top photography magazines should include:

  • The contents of the photography magazine need to be spot on (magazines aimed at beginners need to focus on helping beginners, and magazines for pros need to be geared towards pros) and the magazine needs to cover topics that they say are included in the photography magazine cover in detail
  • Knowledge from the magazine should help the reader develop photography and gear skills
  • It needs to provide tips with illustrations to make information understandable and interesting
  • Contents of the magazine need to be laid out in a way that the information makes things easier for photographers so they do more photography and not contemplate about it
  • Assignment ideas should be included in photography magazines to help photographers practice what they learn
  • Project ideas to help photographers get through times when they feel less motivated.
  • Advice from Pros to help with inspiration and needs to be delivered in such a way that it motivates photographers and gives them a feeling of “nothing is impossible” with practice and patience
  • The magazine contents need to be laid out in an easy-to-understand format, flow, and language
  • Promotions or reviews made on equipment should not lead beginners towards gear lust but rather help them focus more on improving photography with the gear in hand
  • Seasonal articles, projects to try along with tips should be included, for example, what and how to photograph during each season (spring, autumn, winter, summer)
  • Photos need to include settings, tips, and any techniques used, including lighting setups and any story behind the situation, as this helps with knowledge for the reader rather than just looking at photos for the namesake. It would be great if a short note on the location, weather, and available light was discussed as well.
  • Should include post-processing advice and tips along with recommended applications and reasons why they are recommended. Not just focus on paid applications or just applications from one developer like Adobe, but also include other developers and free applications that would help any reader and beginners
  • Needs to feature/showcase readers’ work, so readers get to know what other photographers achieve with their gear
  • Critique sections so that readers can learn from critiques of other photographers’ images in a photography magazine
  • Review gadgets and accessories for photographers so they can make decisions on buying the gear they need
  • Ads relevant to the audience – for example, if the magazine focuses on landscape photography, ads related to gears and other equipment required for landscape photographers
  • Include little surprise gifts like cards that readers can download to their smart devices or prints that can be used in the fields.
  • It should include the latest news and events
  • Behind the scenes of professional photographers on location and studios.
  • Interviews in a photography magazine, especially how a photographer turned pro from a beginner or amateur

Taking into account most of the above factors, we have come up with a bunch of what we think are the best photography magazines overall and by region and important genres. We have done all the research and included as much information about the magazines so you do not have to spend time looking around for them.

Note: The price, subscription fees, and any offers stated here are based on what we found at the time of writing or updating the article, and please note that these may change from time to time and may also be available for better offers elsewhere.

Based on the factors discussed above and looking at magazines that would be really beneficial for a photographer to grow and develop their skills, we have chosen five magazines as the overall best photography magazines. This in no way means that the other photography magazines are inferior in quality.

2.1. Outdoor Photographer Magazine :

Rather than the quality of magazine paper, design and layout, c’t Photography Magazine focused on content with information that should be useful for photographers. Photographic techniques and theory were given importance and explained in a detailed fashion.

The magazine also came with CDs that had interviews and software + plugins for post-processing. The adverts were less compared to other magazines which they compensated by having a slightly expensive price. This magazine was one that was loved by many photographers and it is one that is missed.

8.2. Popular Photography Magazine :

Popular photography magazine, also known as Pop Photo, was a monthly photography magazine that was founded in May 1937 and was one of the largest circulated photography magazines. It was owned by a number of companies and due to a decline in advertising revenues, the magazine ceased publication in March 2017 with March/April 2017 being its final issue.

popular photography magazine

During its time, the magazine was one of the best in the world with around one million circulations. The magazine got things right from basic “how to” articles to in-depth reviews of equipment that were tested in their own state of the art labs and the detailed reviews were something that could not be seen elsewhere. They were also the best on showcasing the art of photography.

Besides the decline in revenues from adverts, it also seems that Popular Photography magazine was not keeping up with its online content and was not maintaining an online version of the magazine for online people.

More of what also added to the demise of the magazine was the digital revolution where younger photographers wanted to look for information on their phones and tablets and not on a print magazine. This was a photography magazine loved by many photographers who still miss having one to read in their hands.

8.3. PhotoLife Magazine :

The articles in the magazine were professional with outstanding images that had technical details for readers to look and learn. The magazine featured photography techniques, tips and advanced approaches to photography. The magazine also published industry news and events that readers could participate in.

After 45 years of operation, Photo Life announced its closure with March 2021 issue being the last one published. In its statement, Photo Life announced that it has weathered many storms but the pandemic was the final blow that had many consequences including significant losses in advertising revenue.

For those who can read German Naturfoto is one of the best magazines for landscape and wildlife photography. Like many German magazines it is quite light on adverts and the price reflects this. Very high production standards. The website is at https://www.naturfoto-magazin.de/

Hi Peter, thank you for the suggestion and for sharing the link as well. This is helpful 🙂

If you want to see contemporary amateur photography, usually around a “theme”, along with interviews of accomplished amateurs, check out Shots. It’s been around for a long time. https://shotsmag.com/

Hi David, thank you for the link. It is helpful 🙂

I didn’t think there were 30 photography magazines left in this world.

You missed out on FII and New Zealand Geographic! Both are great.

Hi Ann, thank you for that. I came across the f11 magazine, but it was not available as printed version. Thank you for the suggestions 🙂

Very good descriptions of these various magazines. There is aone magazine that is head and shoulders above the rest, at least in my book. Having been a professional photographer for 55 years, and a book and magazine addict, I have to say that the very best magazine out there is Lenswork Magazine. Beautifully printed and bound, on great paper, and in-depth commentary and articles. NO advertisements. Subscriptions include the option of physical magazine, online, or a combination of both. Not to be missed.

Hi Adam, thank you for the suggestion. We will have a look 🙂

Just a few kind words. Thank you for your work and care.

Hi Joel, thank you. You are kind 🙂

Left out Brooks Jensen’s great magazine “Lenswork” and on line content at . It’s about photographs, not cameras.

I believe Outdoor Photography Canada is no longer available. It was a great magazine while it was published.

Hi James, thank you. Just checked their website that mentioned their website will stay live until March 31, 2019 then will cease to operate which is sad. We will replace this with another magazine soon. Thank you again 🙂

where is foam?

I appreciate your work in compiling this list. I miss hard copy, physical magazines! There’s just something special about holding it in your hands, being able to flip freely through the pages, the lack of distracting hyperlinks…

Practical Photography and Silvershotz are both ended now. 🙁

Hi Sarah, that’s sad 🙁 Thank you for letting us know. We will update the article with the information.

I’d recommend CAPTION Magazine captionmagazine.org, a bimonthly photography magazine out of Chile. Available in digital and print format.

Thank you very much Don. Will have a look and include in the next update 🙂

In Canada, PHOTO LIFE and PHOTO SOLUTION are no longer available. please check.

Hi Jacques, thank you for letting us know. We will check that out and update the article soon 🙂

Where is Camera Craft magazine? It is published in the UK bimonthly. I like this magazine in that it has good articles and not filled with ads. Also in you list you should mention that the mag is available in print.

Are you folks aware that Outdoor Photographer now publishes dull muddy images on newspaper stock? It is no longer a top quality magazine publishing vibrant sharp photos on glossy paper.

I recommend my current favorite magazine, Lens Magazine, which has been published for more than 100 issues for over 10 years, and their website is: https://lensmagazine.net , you will find treasures!

15 Best Photography Magazines in 2024

1. capture magazine.

Capture is one of Australia's most popular photography magazines.

Capture is one of Australia’s most popular photography magazines for advanced learners and people who consider themselves serious hobbyists.

It’s packed with useful information on gear related topics, events, upcoming workshops and photo competitions.

One of the sections that I personally find quite beneficial is called “Advice “– here you can browse through a number of high-quality articles which will help you upgrade your knowledge base significantly.

The magazine offers both print and digital subscription plans, with prices depending on your location. Check their website for more details.

2. Outdoor Photographer Magazine

one of the best magazines for outdoor photography articles and images

Outdoor Photographer is a popular American nature photography magazine which gets published 11 times a year (they combine the January and February issue together).

This magazine is a top-notch option if you’re a nature’s child and you love taking your camera out for adventures.

It focuses on photography genres that are directly related to the great outdoors such as: Landscape, Wildlife, Sports and even Macro photography.

What I personally find very helpful with this particular magazine is that they have a section called “On Location”.

Here you’ll be able to find recommended places which have enchanting charisma and are perfect for capturing a breathtaking landscape photo.

Similar to Rotor Drone, Outdoor Photographer Magazine also offers to its readers both digital and print editions.

You have quite of few options when it comes to subscriptions depending on which part of the world you’re currently located at (check them out on their website).

Outdoor Photographer also accepts photo submissions .

3. British Journal of Photography

One of the best photography magazines for photo pro and serious shooters

British Journal of Photography has its roots deep in history: It was founded back in 1854 and it’s still functioning today.

In fact, the journal is known as “the world’s oldest and most influential photography title,” and it’s home to some of the industry’s most prestigious awards.

The printed journal itself is a beautiful, ad-free, bi-monthly publication, with each issue dedicated to a different theme. You can be assured that each theme is compelling, timely, and highly relevant to the world we live in.

These days, the journal falls under the umbrella of digital company 1854 , so if you subscribe to the magazine you can also get access to all of 1854’s unique digital content as well. There’s a range of different plans available starting from a free plan up to full access at only £10.42 per month.

The full access plans also give you free entry to all of the journal’s awards and priority application to 1854 Commissions. It’s definitely worth checking out.

4. Better Photography Magazine

Better Photography Magazine is one of the best photography magazines for digital photography articles

This one is an Australian photography magazine which can be an interesting read for professional photographers and for beginners. Better Photography puts an emphasis on education, workshops, capture and post-production.

If you’d like to get access to the full online subscription which includes a quick entry ticket to all issues published since autumn 2009, the price is AU$49.80 per year and AU$79.80 if you’re located outside Australia.

You can also take advantage of a few courses and masterclasses listed on their website. One of them which seems quite intriguing is Peter Eastway’s Landscape Master Class – if you’re into this type of photography it’s something to check out.

5. Amateur Photographer Magazine

Best photography magazines: Amateur Photographer

Amateur Photography is a British magazine which is one of the few which gets published once every week.

It’s a bit hard to believe that this magazine is more than 130 years old! One of the founders was Alfred Stieglitz who was one of the most renowned photographers of his time.

Its name suggests that it’s orientated towards amateur photographers, but in reality, more advanced learners can also benefit from its content significantly.

Some of the magazine’s regular features are quite interesting to read – like the Reader Spotlight, where readers can submit up to 10 images (they could be on film or digital). A selection of the best ones is made by the editors and published each week which is great exposure for the authors. Also, the “Editor’s choice” gets paid £50.

Amateur Photography offers annual subscriptions to their print issues, or you can opt for a digital option. Prices differ depending on where you are in the world, so check out their website for all the details.

6. Exit Magazine

Exit is a magazine that was founded twenty years ago by the art director Mark Jubber and the editor/photographer Stephen Toner. Its main objectives are photography, fashion and art.

B+W also contains featured interviews with influential figures in the world of contemporary photography. In this section, you can find both leading names and emerging artists.

The magazine was launched in 2001 to be a constant source of inspiration for photographers who value creativity and it’s still following its objectives almost 20 years later.

It’s also known for having developed strong communities on Instagram and Twitter, so you can also have a look at those platforms if you’d like to follow Black+White.

Purchasing an issue costs £26.95 for a hard copy and you can also take advantage of ordering a digital version via Pocketmags (which can be read on any digital device).

8. Aperture Magazine

Apterture Magazine has articles and shoots for inspiring your print or digital photography skills

This one is a true legend among photography magazines around the world. The first issue was published back in 1952 and some of the names involved were the famous Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange.

Aperture is now published four times a year and it features images by well-established artists and by emerging photographers.

Like most of the photography magazines nowadays this one also offers an option for a digital copy – it’s basically included in all the subscription models they offer.

The first option that you have is Print + Archive + Digital Edition (plus unlimited access to Aperture’s online archive) for US$110 per year. The second one is Print + Digital Edition for US$75 per year and the third is Archive + Digital Edition for US$59.95 per year (the last option is also available monthly for US$9.99).

9. Digital Photo Magazine

Digital Photo Magazine is a great magazine for photographers to subscribe to

This magazine is one of the best ones out there aimed at newbies and amateur photographers. It has a full arsenal of articles that focus on tutorials, gear reviews, and “how-to” guides.

Digital Photo Magazine is owned and run by the same people who are behind the publishing of Outdoor Photographer (which we mentioned above).

If you check their official website you’ll see a section called “Contests” – in this one you can find information about a few different photography competitions to enter if you’d like to try!

If you want to subscribe to Digital Photo, you’ll also be getting the Outdoor Photographer magazine. They offer yearly subscription models which start at around US$15 per year.

10. Shutter Magazine

best photography magazines for fashion

Shutter is a photography magazine created in 2011 which is mainly focused on providing photography education.

They’re aimed at wedding and portrait photographers in general,  so if you’re one of them, you might find it a very interesting read.

Shutter is made by photographers for photographers and among its collection of articles you’ll be able to find gems such as “bringing client concepts to life” or “getting started in destination photography”.

It’s really more orientated towards professionals than towards amateur photography so keep this in mind when assessing if it’s suitable for you.

Their online version is free of charge – a great source of knowledge for many photographers. The paper version can be purchased as an annual subscription for US$49.

11. Practical Photography Magazine

Practical Photography magazine features articles and shoots to inspire the digital photographer

Practical Photography is a good option if you feel like you fit more within the beginner group of photographers.

Here you can find lots of gear review to help you determine which is the best piece of equipment you need.

As the name of the magazine itself suggests, it concentrates on the practical aspect of photography which is closely related to gear – camera bodies, lenses, computing and accessories are just a few of the categories available for you to check out.

Practical Photography offers print and digital copies. The print version costs £55.20 for an annual subscription, with a new issue published every month.

If you’d like to purchase the digital copy, the price is £27.80 per year. You also happen to have a third option which combines the previous two – for print and digital together you’ll need to pay £65.20 every year.

12. Professional Photographer Magazine

Magazines best for professional photographers: Professional Photographer Magazine.

Professional Photographer is an American photography magazine which focuses its creative energy towards reaching an audience who are not complete beginners. It’s been around for quite a long time and it’s definitely a source of useful information when it comes to the business side of things.

At the moment they have quite a few interesting articles following the current situation and offering ideas to those of us who are restricted and have to spend the majority of their time at home.

As well as business tips and tricks you’ll be able to find great images for inspiration in the “Galleries” section. There’s no limit to the photography genres – you can find everything from teen portraits to wildlife photography to wedding photo shoots.

Professional Photographer has both digital and paper editions and they offer subscription models for US, Canada and the rest of the world.

The prices start from US$19.95 for 12 issues (either print or digital). For people who don’t live in US or Canada, they only offer a digital version of the magazine for the same price.

13. The Exposed Magazine

the exposed art photography magazine

This magazine is created in Copenhagen and it’s a real gem for people who perceive photography more as an art form than anything else.

The Exposed goes beyond the printed page, as the founders claim. It only exists in a print version, but it also has extra multimedia content associated with it.

How can you find this extra content? There’s an app that you can download which unlocks this additional experience for you.

It’s definitely a contemporary approach and it captures the reader’s attention right away. The app has exactly the same name as the photography magazine itself so it’s really easy to find it, download it and give it a try.

This is an interesting project which is yet to unfold itself fully. If you’re also a supporter of the unconventional ways media can develop these days, this magazine might be the perfect match for you!

14. Pylot Magazine

Best photography magazines: Pylot

This is one of the magazines for photographers who have a rebellious spark and like to question norms and established standards.

It was founded in London and it revolves around the genre of fashion photography.

The founders of Pylot Magazine are firmly against beauty retouching when it comes to fashion photography. They prefer the more natural approach which excludes post-editing when done as sugarcoating.

In this art photography orientated magazine you’ll find images that are all-analogue.

As the founder Max Barnett states in one of his interviews, Pylot was created to influence and leave a mark; it was never meant to please all the readers out there.

Pylot magazine has both a printed edition and a website with a lovely minimalistic design. It’s great for people who want to take a break from digital photography and see something different.

15. Rotor Drone Pro Magazine

Best photography magazines: Rotor Drone Pro

Drones are becoming more and more popular these days and the demand for aerial images is growing constantly. If you’re into this photography genre, then you should definitely check out Rotor Drone Pro Magazine .

This is the first magazine of its kind and it focuses on a wide range of topics: from gear reviews to inspiring interviews with people who are aircraft masters.

It’s also suitable for beginners as it offers useful information on getting started. Budget-friendly machines that you can use to learn the basics and tips on battery life, for example, are topics you’ll find covered.

Rotor Drone Pro has both digital and print versions to choose from. You can also opt for having them both – a printed copy for your collection and a digital copy for convenience of use.

There are 3 main subscription models: 1 year print and digital for US$34.95 (you save 27%), 1 year digital subscription for exactly the same price and 2 years print and digital for US$59.95 (you save 37%).

Final words

While there’s a wealth of information and inspiration for photographers floating around on the web, it can be overwhelming.

Photography magazines are a great option because they bring you a carefully curated selection of content that you know will fit your specific style or niche. Or to put it another way – sometimes less is more!

Bonus Tip: Local Magazines

Local magazines are an excellent place to start if you want your work to reach more eyes. While many national and international magazines are becoming online-only, some local papers and mags are still available in print.

One problem with local publications is that they often lack content. That’s why they are often very happy to receive submissions from local constituents.

Like the other magazines we’ve featured, keep your work relevant. Local magazines don’t want photographs from other parts of the country. They want to see the best from the surrounding area.

Getting your work published in a local magazine or paper is fantastic for your confidence. It’s also a good way to build contacts. You’ll have an in with that publisher, and other businesses from the area will see your work. Plus, you’ll have something published to pad your portfolio .

6 Travel Magazines with Great Photography that You’ve Never Heard Of

Travel and photography go together like coffee and cream. In the past few years, we’ve witnessed a rise of Insta-famous travelers who use a combination of sponsorships, frugality and trust funds to document jealousy inducing trips around the world. But the trend of the itinerant millennial has also paved the way for niche print publications that combine great design with beautiful photography.

We’re not saying that the travel magazine stalwarts like Travel+Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler and National Geographic don’t feature great photography (they most certainly do), but here’s a few titles from the road less traveled. You probably won’t find them at your nearest airport so head on over to the most interesting bookstore you can find.

Founding Editor-in-Chief Serena Guen created Suitcase , the “multi-media” publication, while attending NYU. Part fashion, part travel, the publication features a lot of young talent like Emily Isa Baker , Teal Thomsen , and Lilli Kad .

The Travel Almanac

The Travel Almanac’s highfalutin about page declares the journal as “the first true post-tourism publication.” Printed on heavy stock with a beautiful portrait on the cover, the magazine features interviews with photographic luminaries like Alec Soth, Richard Prince, and Juergen Teller. Oh, and it also has some nifty photography by founder/DJ (of course he’s a DJ) Paul Kominek and Sara Katrine Thiesen .

Published bi-annually.

Another Escape

Another Escape hails itself as “ outdoor lifestyle, creative culture and sustainable living publication that explores the stories of passionate people, alluring landscapes and intriguing ideas.” In addition to all the words du jour , the magazine features some pretty legit photography by Jody Daunton , Aaron Sami , and Dawn Chapman .

Another Escape Magazine

Forget traversing multiple locations, Nomas only covers one location per issue and you’ll like it that way! The Athens-based Aestetik design studio produces the rag on 120gr Munken Polar paper to remind you that this is an object of permanence and not some cheap brochure.

Sidetracked

Personal stories accompanied by nifty photos with an adventure focus? Sidetracked is the cool kids magazine where fashion is strictly functional, and the only nightcap you’ll be having is the wool beanie on your head. Bad-assed photography by people like Jay Kolsch , Martin Hartley , and Jody MacDonald .

Published tri-annually.

Sidetracked magazine

A reimagining of the old Holiday magazine that ran from 1946-1977, the new incarnation is the child of Parisian art director Franck Durand. City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

best travel photography magazines

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

best travel photography magazines

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

best travel photography magazines

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

best travel photography magazines

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

best travel photography magazines

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

best travel photography magazines

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

best travel photography magazines

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

best travel photography magazines

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

best travel photography magazines

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

best travel photography magazines

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

best travel photography magazines

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

best travel photography magazines

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

best travel photography magazines

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

best travel photography magazines

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

best travel photography magazines

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

best travel photography magazines

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

best travel photography magazines

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

  • Capturing the Kremlin and central Moscow: the higher, the better

best travel photography magazines

Of course, pictures of the Kremlin shot from the Red Square are no doubt iconic and must-have, but they are taken by thousands of tourists every day and can hardly make a wow-effect on your friends on Instagram and other social networks.

Another problem with shooting from Red Square is that the photos do not fully represent the scale of the medieval fortress of Kremlin. So, you need to make some steps further and higher to catch the right shot. You’ll be surprised by the fact that the panoramic views of the Kremlin are pretty easy to get. We have four hints for you: Zaryadie, Ritz Carlton, Patriarch bridge, and Radisson riverboat.

If you want to not only make beautiful photos but also to learn something interesting about the history of Russia, we recommend an individual tour of the Kremlin. You can order it online here .

best travel photography magazines

First, go to Zaryadye, which is located right next to the Red Square, behind the St Basil’s Cathedral, on the closest Moscow river bank. The most impressive views over the Kremlin are unfolded from the so-called Flying bridge of Zaryadye and Glass Dome building in the back part of the park.

Zaryadye is the new place of attraction in Moscow. It’s a landscape park, opened in September 2017 by the Moscow government on the hill where the giant soviet hotel ‘Rossiya’ located before its demolition in the early 2000-s. As a bonus, you’ll get an incredible view over one of Stalin’s skyscrapers, located on the opposite bank of Moscow river — the so-called Vysotka at Kotelnicheskaya, used as a residence of many Russian famous people and officials.

  • The roof of the Ritz Carlton Hotel

This option is ok only in case if you’re ready to pay the average bar bill of over 2500 rubles (about $40). Visit the O2 Lounge Bar on the roof of the Ritz Carlton Hotel, where all the global celebrities take their Moscow pictures, from Angelina Jolie to Robert Downey Jr.

But such photo investments seem to pay off immediately. The deck of the bar makes an excellent panorama point for the Kremlin walls and towers, the Historical Museum, the Great Kremlin Palace, and the Kremlin cathedrals. All these landmarks are not too far away, which makes them perfectly recognizable, even in the background.

  • The Radisson riverboat

best travel photography magazines

This hint will be useful in case you’re traveling to Moscow in the cold season. River transportation in Moscow doesn't stop in winter. Many enclosed and heated tourist yachts with panoramic windows and ice-breaking equipment can be found in the Moscow River. For instance, one of the most recognizable is the flotilla Radisson.

Their route goes past all the main sights of pre-revolutionary and Soviet Moscow – from Stalin's skyscrapers (Ukraina hotel and Vysotka at Kotelnicheskaya) to the Kremlin and the Novodevichy Convent. It is possible to go out to the open deck and take photos of you and your family or friends against a backdrop of the city’s lights and their reflection in the river. The cruise lasts 2.5 hours. You can book a tour with a car roundtrip transfer from your hotel to the pier and back: book online here

  • Patriarch bridge

The bridge is located further from the Kremlin, than Zaryadye or Ritz Carlton, so the Kremlin walls on your photos will look smaller. The brighter side of walking through the bridge is that you can do more fabulous pics of the Moscow river and city center landscapes. The Moscow river and the pretty recognizable giant statue of Peter the Great are ideally viewed from the bridge. Be prepared that it’s a famous and popular pedestrian area for tourists all over the world so the bridge may be crowded.

Also, the bridge is a part of a long promenade which leads from the Christ the Saviour Cathedral through the Balchug island to the opposite bank of the Moscow River, where another pedestrian area — Museon embankment — is ready to joy you with its cafes, cozy lawns and impressive views over the river flow, ducks and boats.

The best spot to shoot the famous Moscow business downtown is located on the Taras Shevchenko embankment. To get there you need to come to the metro stations Vystavochnaya or Delovoi Tsentr, then go to the Bagration bridge (use the metro navigation, the path is tricky), cross the bridge — and voilà! You’ve reached the best spot for shooting, posing, sending selfies, and Instagramming.

  • Ponds and orangeries

best travel photography magazines

There are two ponds in Moscow, that deserve your attention in summer: the Chistye ponds (actually there is only one pond, but it’s worth it) and the pond in Gorky Park, which is full of small boats and catamarans. Both lakes are lost between the green alleys and are drowning in all the shades of green. Those are the perfect spots to catch the moment of peace amid the madness of big city life.
