Glass Bottom Boats Mallorca: Our Top Five

by Click-mallorca.com · Published 13 February, 2023 · Updated 15 February, 2023

You can’t miss a trip on a glass bottom boat in Mallorca on your holidays! Your holiday is not complete without it. With underwater vision you will discover the beauty and richness of the island’s seabed, on one of our glass bottom boat tours that depart daily from many different ports on Mallorca’s coast in summer.

Just imagine sailing around the coastline on a fun activity with your children and being able to view the seabed and the fish swimming alongside you. It is an amazing sight: the children remain glued to the glass, in awe. And the adults too!

Why opt for a trip on a glass bottom boat in Mallorca ?

There are many reasons to choose a glass bottom boat excursion, especially if you are travelling with family and have children of different ages – the main reason is because it will please them all ! You will give them (and yourself) a unique experience on a boat ride quite different from the traditional ones, and offer an unusual and exciting perspective of the aquatic environment.

  • Stunning underwater views : Glass bottom boats allow passengers to view the underwater world without the need to dive or even get in the water. This is because the depths of the sea are viewed through glass panels in the bottom of the boat. That’s why they are often also known as “submarine vision” boats.
  • Duration: Glass bottom boat rides in Mallorca are ideal for those who don’t have much experience on a boat and who want to do something fun for just a few hours. After all, not everyone knows if they will suffer with seasickness or if the children will feel queasy. The trips offered on a glass bottom boat normally have a short duration of just a few hours around the bay.
  • Suitable for all ages: Glass bottom boat tours are suitable for all ages, and are a fun and safe way to explore the underwater world. This is an important thing for parents of small children to remember: the stops made for swimming are often made in the open sea and not at a beach, so you won’t be able to touch the bottom.
  • Price : Of all the options for boat trips in Mallorca , the glass bottom boat is the cheapest type of boat trip, making it ideal for all the family.

Don’t worry: if you don’t know what a glass bottom boat is (though the name should give you some indication!) we explain it in great detail at the bottom of this article.

The Best Glass Bottom Boat Trips in Mallorca

Practically from every port or tourist resort in Mallorca in summer, there are endless options of boat trips; although not all of them with underwater vision or glass bottom. Here are our top five choices, and you will see that in each one there is a link, where you can book on the web and find more detailed information, such as prices, starting point, duration, route and days.

1. Alcudia Glass Bottom Boat Trip

The glass bottom boat ride in Alcudia is extremely popular in summer and there are departures several times throughout the day. The boat trip lasts 2.5 hours, and includes a stop for swimming and stunning views of the wonderful Es Coll Baix Beach .

The boat trip departs from the Port of Alcudia in the north of Mallorca and follows the coastline of Alcudia Bay, until reaching one of the most beautiful and otherwise unreachable, coves in the area, Es Coll Baix. The boat stops at Es Coll Baix for around 20 minutes and you can swim from the boat or go to the lowest deck and try to spot the sealife through the viewing panels.

The excursion sails three times daily from May to October.

2. Submarine Vision Boat Trip in Santa Ponsa

Our next proposal is all the way at the other side of the island and is a glass-bottom boat ride from Santa Ponsa to the Malgrats Islands nature reserve, which also includes a swim stop to enjoy snorkeling.

This glass bottom boat tour starts in Camp de Mar, Paguera or Santa Ponsa . From there you visit the Malgrats Island nature reserve, where you can admire the impressive landscape of this area in the southwest of Mallorca. As you will be sailing into a nature reserve, you will have more chance of spotting different types of fish, octopuses, jellyfish and starfish through the glass part of the boat. The tour also includes a stop for snorkeling and swimming.

3. Glass Bottom Boat Trip from Palma Nova and Magaluf

Palma Nova and Magaluf are two very popular tourist resorts in Mallorca in the summer: the beaches are packed with holiday-makers trying to get a tan; the two resorts have grown so big that they have all but fused together; and there are more pubs, bars, restaurants and shops than any other tourist area in Mallorca. We have the perfect solution to get away from the crowded beach for a couple of hours: a trip on the Britannia Jet glass bottom boat trip from Palma Nova and Magaluf .

submarine vision boat close to Palma

The Britannia Jet glass bottom boat is one of the pioneer excursions in underwater vision on the Mallorcan coast . The company has several boats equipped with Underwater Vision, and that have three decks. During the underwater viewing time, the boat approaches the coast and, at low speed and continues along the coastline. You can observe the large number of species that inhabit the seabed of this area of the rocky coast.

4. Glass Bottom Boat in Cala Millor

In the eastern part of the island, we find the popular tourist resorts of Cala Millor, Cala Bona, Cala Ratjada, Sa Coma and plenty more. There is a glass bottom boat trip from this area which lasts about 2-3 hours, and leaves from different piers on the coast, from Cala Ratjada to Porto Cristo, covering the entire coastline. This is ideal for anyone staying anywhere on the east coast.

During the boat trip you can see part of the island’s coastline, and you can see the rocky seabed through the windows in the bottom of the boat. Whenever possible, depending on the weather and sea conditions, they make a short stop for a swim. One of the chosen areas is Cala Morlanda where the colour of the water is that postcard-perfect Meditarranean turquoise.

5. Starfish Boat in Cala Dor

The Starfish boat trip departs from the harbour in Cala Dor and, through the transparent bottom, you will be able to admire the underwater fauna and flora. You will sail past some of the most beautiful coves in the eastern part of the island on this excursion and you will find that the views from the top deck are as just as good as those from the lower deck. It is a catamaran-style boat and has large windows on the floats, which are below sea level, to observe the seabed like an aquarium. As in the other options, it also offers a stop for swimming.

As you can see, a glass bottom boat trip in Mallorca is a highly recommended activity, especially in summer, and if you go with children they will enjoy it very much.

What is a Glass Bottom Boat?

Back in the 1960s, when Mallorca started to be a sought-after tourist destination for holiday-makers, and boat trips began to be popular, the boats were nothing like the modern vessels we find today – and nor were the piers, jetties or infrastructure at the harbours. Back then, boat trips were made on small or medium-sized wooden boats, that were nothing more than repurposed fishing boats, of which some still remain today (and interestingly enough, are the most demanded excursions for people looking for a charming and nostalgic outing). Then the tourists began to arrive in their droves and, larger boats, with greater capacity were needed for pleasureboat excursions. These boats were evolving, becoming more modern, and introducing more exciting features, such as underwater vision.

Glass bottom boats in Mallorca are specially designed and built to enjoy underwater vision, which offers a perfect view of the seabed. The vessels are semi-submersibles, built entirely with marine aluminum in shipyards with extensive experience in the construction of this type of boat. It is in their semi-submersible hulls where they have the underwater vision zone, in which there are sometimes seats, to facilitate enjoyment.

submarine vision excursion in mallorca

With these boats, in most cases, short excursions are made, 3-4 hours maximum, and they always sail close to the coast. Normally a few hours of navigation and some stops to swim are included. Undoubtedly, it is a very popular activity for families with children, due to its duration, price and the fact that it has underwater vision, which attracts a lot of children’s attention.

Perhaps the only drawback is that the seabed of Mallorca is not as spectacular as that of the Caribbean, which is what comes to mind when talking about the seabed. In Mallorca we don’t have corals or tropical fish, but rather a background with Posedonia, rocks and fish that are not so “colourful”, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not beautiful.

We hope this article has helped you plan your next glass bottom boat trip in Mallorca. Leave us your comment and let us know. If you liked the post, share it on your social networks…

Mallorca: P&O ship with thousands of Britons onboard collides with tanker

Cruise vessel’s mooring ropes snapped in high winds, which blew liner into nearby oil transport ship off coast of Palma

A P&O cruise ship carrying thousands of British holidaymakers has crashed into an oil tanker off the coast of Palma in Mallorca after it snapped its moorings.

The Britannia was blown by gales towards the other vessel on Sunday after a storm battered the island in the Balearics. P&O said a small number of people had sustained minor injuries.

It was understood that 321 guests from the ship will be flying home early as it heads back to Southampton with a reduced number of people on board, as required by maritime law.

Ricky Stubbs, a passenger, said he and his children had been about to disembark when the crash happened.

“We were at the stairwell next to the sunset bar,” he said. “A loud crash came from the bar and the door flung open with people running in. Within seconds there was more crashing followed by chaos as people were trying to escape the onslaught of wind and rain.

“People were being ushered in by other guests and staff. You could clearly see some had injuries due to either falling over or debris flying around, and people were distraught.

“A couple of minutes later the captain came over the speaker asking all guest to return to their rooms until further instructions.”

Stubbs said the passengers had been told they would be staying overnight while the boat was moored up so the damage could be assessed.

“Huge respect for the captain and all the staff as they managed to stay calm and keep everyone updated,” he said. “The captain made announcements every 10-15 minutes once we were back in our cabins and they did a great job in a stressful situation.”

View from onboard ship

The £473m ship, which entered service in 2015, is the flagship of the P&O fleet.

A P&O Cruises spokesperson said: “On Sunday 27 August, P&O Cruises Britannia was impacted by severe weather when alongside in Palma de Mallorca.

“Following inspections, our third-party surveyor has confirmed that one of Britannia’s lifeboats has sustained structural issues and cannot be repaired onboard.

“We are so sorry but these extraordinary circumstances mean that the ship is required, by maritime regulation, to return to Southampton with a reduced number of people onboard.

“A limited number of guests and crew on board have been advised that they will be leaving the ship and will be returned to Southampton (or their starting point) by flight and transfer. The guests remaining onboard will be able to enjoy the entertainment and activities scheduled for the remainder of their trip.”

Mallorca had been experiencing winds of 75mph and torrential rains, which caused sun loungers to be blown into the air. An amber weather alert was in place across the whole of the island and had been extended until midnight on Sunday.

The Tramuntana region and the north and north-east of the island were most likely to be affected, forecasters said.

It’s no surprise that many visitors come to Mallorca to party! There are many different party boats and booze cruises where you can find a professional DJ, a bar, and a dance floor onboard. So, let your salty hair down and dance the day away!

Private Boat Trips in Mallorca

Visit hidden coves and pretty beaches on your own time on a private Mallorca charter with your friends or family. Have the entire boat to yourself, working with the skipper to decide on the best places to anchor in for swimming and snorkeling. Without the hurry or crowds, you’ll have plenty of time to relax, eat lunch, and admire the stunning scenery.

Besides, if you’re traveling in a group, it may actually be cheaper to charter a boat for the day that to purchase individual entries on tour.

Speedboat Tours in Mallorca

Fun and adventurous, Speedboats are designed to glide through the water with minimum resistance at top speeds. Have fun out on the water, gliding through the waves, hanging on for dear life, and perhaps even taking a dip in the sea!

Glass Bottom Boat Tours

Glass-bottom boat trips are ideal for families or those that want a quiet sailing experience. You’ll have just enough time to enjoy the scenery and spot the ocean life below the water from a large viewing window in the boat’s hull.

The glass bottom boats are larger and motorized, holding up to 250 people. They also typically depart from resort ports.

Boat Rentals in Mallorca

If you are looking for something more exclusive, why not head out with your friends or family on a private boat hire in Mallorca? When you rent a boat, you’ll have the freedom to explore, stop for swimming when and where you want, and avoid the crowds by finding secluded coves. You do not need a license for boat hire in Mallorca.

Tips for Mallorca Boat Trips

Plan your Mallorca Boat Tour Early

Book your Mallorca boat tour online to secure the best deals for your chosen date, and ensure availability — especially in the high season (summer).

What to Pack for a Mallorca Boat Trip

Make sure you pack these things for your boat trip around Mallorca:

  • Light jacket — The sea breeze can be cool at certain times of the day.
  • Sunscreen — Avoid sunburn by applying sunscreen (and reapplying when indicated). Even on cloudier days, being out in the elements can lead to sunburn. Bring Chapstick w/SPF to protect your lips too!
  • Sunglasses & hat — Protect your eyes and face from the sun and heat.
  • Swimsuit — For swimming in the Mediterranean Sea!
  • Bathing Suit Cover-up — A bathing suit cover-up or sarong is always nice when you want to get the sun off your shoulders.
  • Towel — For drying off.
  • Dry Bag — For keeping valuables dry.
  • Waterproof Cell Phone Holder — To protect your camera from water.
  • Phone (or other cameras) — Bring your phone, camera, or GoPro as there will be a ton of opportunities to capture picture-perfect coastlines, sea life, and of course your family and friends having the time of their life!
  • Comfortable Shoes — Wear non-slippery shoes like a good pair of walking sandals or boat shoes that can grip the boat’s deck even when wet and also dry quickly.

Bring More Snacks/Drinks Than You Think You’ll Need

If you’re renting a boat or going on a cruise where you’re expected to provide your own food, it’s always best to bring plenty of drinks (including water) and snacks. It’s hard to say just how much food and drink you’ll need, and you don’t want to go hungry or get dehydrated.

Charge Your Gear

Charge your phone and any cameras before the tour — you will be taking lots of photos! Don’t forget a portable charger, as well !

Know Your Boat Tour Meeting Point

Your tour may meet at your hotel, a marina, or somewhere in town. Always confirm your meeting details so you know don’t miss your excursion!

1. palma de mallorca: half-day catamaran tour with buffet meal.

  • Departure Point : Muelle de las Golondrinas, Palma, or Club San Antonio de la Playa, Can Pastilla
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Duration : 4-5 hours

The best way to view the city of Palma de Mallorca is aboard an 80-foot-long catamaran. The Royal Palace of La Almudaina and La Seu Cathedral look stunning when viewed from the bay.

But the great thing about this cruise is that it allows you to do a little bit of everything. Yes, you get to sightsee, but that’s not all.

For a mere €10 fee, you can also hire snorkeling equipment and enjoy swimming in the warm, crystal-clear waters of the bay.

Alternatively, you can hang out on the bow nets, listen to pleasant music, and enjoy a cocktail with your friends.

You won’t go hungry when there’s an inclusive buffet lunch with soft drinks. Tuck into roast beef and chicken wings with paella. Enjoy salads and fresh fruit.

You’re sure to have a fantastic time on this beautiful boat. And the memories you’ll take away from the Bay of Palma will last a lifetime.

If you enjoy watersports, you’ll love this cruise. Along Mallorca’s northern coastline, there are many calm and secluded bays, perfect for activities such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboard (SUP), and snorkeling.

The northern coastline offers some of the best natural scenery of Majorca, where Formentor Lighthouse looms over the cliffs and warns ships away from the northernmost tip of the island.

Take along your camera so you can capture memorable photographs to share with your friends on social media.

After setting sail from Port d’Alcudia, you’ll cruise along the coast past a pretty islet and the Aucanada Lighthouse.

Your catamaran will anchor in Cala den Gossalba, a beautiful sheltered cove near the popular beach of Formentor. Here you can relax on the bow net or make use of the provided watersport equipment.

After you’ve splashed around in the Mediterranean, you’ll probably be hungry. It’s a good job lunch is included. Dine on delicious pasta salad, sausages, barbecued meat, bread, and fresh fruit. Drinks are also included.

3. Half-Day Catamaran Cruise To Es Trenc

  • Departure Point : The pier next to Hotel Marqués del Palmer in Colonia de Saint Jordi
  • Departure Times: 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Duration : 5 Hours
  • Includes : 5-hour catamaran cruise, buffet lunch with drinks, life vests, and free snorkeling equipment hire

If you want to see Majorca’s southern coastline, this is the best cruise for you. If you’re tired of the area around Palma, and have seen the rugged coastline around Puerto Alcudia, why not try the south?

It’s notably warmer here than in the north, which is great for sun worshipers.

The turquoise waters to the south of the island give the southern coastline a particularly picturesque aspect. When your catamaran anchors off Es Trenc Beach, you can swim to the shore or frolic in the crystal-clear water.

Your cruise will take you past Cap Salines, the southernmost tip of the island. Here you’ll see some fantastic landscapes, so keep your camera ready.

The catamaran anchors for a second time off Es Caragol Beach, where you can make use of the free snorkeling equipment hire to explore the water for local marine life.

Or, if you prefer, you can swim over to the beach and soak in the sun on the sand.

After you’ve built up an appetite, the catamaran crew will prepare a buffet meal, with sausages, chicken breast, and fresh salad. For dessert, there’s cake!

Enjoy some local sangria with your meal, or opt for a rosé, red or white wine. Mineral water and soft drinks are also available.

4. Alcudia: Caves & Coastline Boat Trip w/ Snorkelling

  • Departure Times : 9:45 AM
  • Duration : 3 hours
  • Includes : 3-hour boat cruise, free snorkeling & stand-up paddleboard (SUP) equipment hire

If you find sea caves fascinating, you’ll love the east coast of Majorca. This 3-hour cruise aboard a modern boat will take you on a voyage of discovery along the beautiful eastern coastline.

The boat will transport you to Llevant Nature Park , where you’ll have an opportunity to swim or make use of the snorkeling and SUP equipment provided. If you snorkel around the nature park, you’ll observe a wide range of unique marine life.

After your swim, re-board the boat to explore a marine cave. The east coast offers some of the most beautiful scenery on Mallorca, especially the Serres de Llevant Mountain Range.

5. From Palma de Mallorca: 5-Hour Catamaran Cruise

  • Departure Point : From the boat dock near the Auditorium de Palma, Palma
  • Departure Times : 10:00 AM morning cruise or 3:30 PM evening cruise

This is a great cruise for anybody who simply wants a leisurely cruise down the south coast of Majorca. Relax aboard as your catamaran passes millionaire’s yachts and heads on down to the south coast, the warmest part of the island.

Depending on how the wind blows, you’ll sail on over to Cala Vella, east of Palma, or Portals Vells, west of Palma.

There your catamaran will drop anchor, giving you a chance to swim in the warm Mediterranean Sea.

If you prefer, you can make use of the snorkeling equipment provided to explore under the waves and search out the local marine life.

While you’re enjoying the waves and sunshine, the crew will be busy preparing a buffet meal for you. You can look forward to delicious sausages, chicken breast, and fresh salad.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’ll be delighted to hear that there’s cake! And why not enjoy a red, rosé, white wine, or sangria with your meal? Soft drinks and water are also provided.

6. Sunset Catamaran Excursion With Food & Drink From Palma

  • Departure Point : Muelle de las Golondrinas, Palma
  • Departure Time: Around 4:45 PM (Times vary to match sunset)
  • Duration : 4 hours
  • Includes : 4-hour catamaran cruise, buffet lunch, soft drinks, and a licensed bar

Watching a sunset over the Mediterranean Sea is one of those sublime experiences that everybody should have on their bucket list.

The crystal-clear waters sparkling in the bright sunshine, turning hues of red and orange as the sun sinks into the horizon.

Aboard a luxury catamaran, you have the best viewpoint from which to observe this beautiful phenomenon. And while you’re watching, you can enjoy a refreshing cocktail from the licensed bar.

But the cruise doesn’t begin at sunset. First, you’ll cruise along the coast around Palma, allowing you a fantastic view of the white limestone buildings of this historic city.

It’s views like this that caused the poet Robert Graves to make this island his home.

Next, you’ll anchor in the calm cove of Cala Blava. Here you can swim in those crystal-clear waters while the sun still shines. Or, if you prefer, you can lounge on the bow net and absorb the last rays of the dying sun.

After you’ve had your fun, the crew will provide a delicious buffet meal and soft drinks. Try some traditional paella along with chicken wings, roast beef, fresh fruit, and salad.

Finally, you’ll cruise back along the coast to Palma de Mallorca, where you’ll see it in a completely different light.

With street lights and windows lit up, the ancient capital stands out from the sea and casts mesmerizing reflections in the early hours of the night.

7. Mallorca: 5-Hour Isla Dragonera Cruise With Lunch

  • Departure Point : From the Pier Playa Santa Ponsa at 10:30 am or the Pier Playa Tora Paguera at 10:45 am
  • Departure Times : 10:30 AM or 10:45 AM depending on departure point
  • Includes : 5-hour catamaran cruise, buffet lunch with drinks, life vests, and snorkeling equipment hire (with €10 deposit)

This is my personal favorite cruise and the best one for nature lovers. Aboard a large, “submarine-view” catamaran, you have a unique opportunity to try out your wildlife photography while you observe Mediterranean marine life.

It’s also a great opportunity to explore beyond the island of Mallorca, because this cruise takes you to Dragonera Island , a protected natural park and former haunt of pirates.

Your cruise begins along the scenic southwest coast and includes a brief stop in a sheltered cove so you can swim in the warm Mediterranean Sea. Snorkeling equipment is available with a €10 deposit.

Next, enjoy the submarine view of the local sea life while you cruise across to the island. The catamaran has underwater windows built into its hull so you can peer into the crystal-clear waters.

Once you arrive at Dragonera Island, you’ll disembark for an hour of exploration. There’s a sea cave where you can swim, a museum you could visit, and unique animal and plant life.

Watch out for the rare wall lizards endemic to the island, which gave the island its name.

The cruise also includes an inclusive buffet meal. Enjoy local paella, pasta salad, green salad, and water. If you like, you can also try traditional sangria.

Cup Spy Jan 10 – Funky breeze gives Brits the run around in Mallorca

What happened in the Cup – January 10, 2023:

  • INEOS Britannia had their third sail on their LEQ12 prototype, in a funky breeze in Mallorca.
  • American Magic did not sail, as signalled in their last report.
  • Emirates Team New Zealand are not expected to sail until January 16, debris permitting after a couple of weeks of stormy weather. Former America’s Cup Challenger (1988) Mercury Bay Boating Club, come close to losing their clubhouse as the aftermath of Cyclone Hale with 5-6metre waves hits the east coast of NZ.
  • Luna Rossa signalled they were not going to be in a good weather cycle this week.
  • Alinghi Red Bull Racing remained in the shed
  • No further developments from the late entry French K-Challenge

INEOS Britannia – LEQ12 – Mallorca – January 10, 2022

The British team sailed for just the third day in their LEQ12, or prototype yacht, used as a test platform for the development of their AC75 race boat.

Sailing from their temporary base in Mallorca, INEOS Britannia had a mixed day on the water, with the funky breeze giving the Brits the runaround, starting with nothing, increasing to 18kts and then dropping back to 6kts – which is usually below the strength for self-takeoff.

From the 92 videos and 350 still images provided by the AC37 Recon team following the British team, they did have some good runs, but there is plenty of work ahead of them.

As one of the helms for the day, Ben Cornish noted in his dockside interview “Every hour that we’re out there, and foiling we’re taking big things off the list. So it’s very positive and with as with these boats, every hour you spend also puts more jobs on the list, so it’s always moving forward.”

As with all the test boats, and AC75’s – the first question against which to analyse a sailing performance outside of a race, is whether the boat was being sailed on manual flight control or on the autopilot. This is very difficult to determine off the boat, and is a point on which the teams are rarely questioned.

The trade-off being that automated flight control, is consistent, and not an influence on the performance data collection. However unless the boat is being flown on manual, the crew don’t have any opportunity to train and learn through the experience of their errors.

One aspect that was obvious was the number of times that the prototype T6 heeled into windward, catching the windward wing foil in the surface – which adds – maybe insignificantly – to the drag, which in turn must have an effect on the test data.

From the videos, we can see that some of the test sailing took place in flat water. In other videos there was a swell running that can contribute to an awkward sea state, which in turn affects the occurrence and severity of windward wing foil strike. This issue seems to be a lot more frequent on the Luna Rossa and INEOS Britannia LEQ12’s than on the AC75’s. The Kiwis generally keep their AC75 and LEQ12/AC40 heeled to leeward – which maybe points to the issue being related to sail trim. The Brits LEQ12 looks a different boat when it is being flown higher on the foils.

The weight of the LEQ12’s is not known, however the AC40 is only a third of the weight of an AC75, but is a half scale prototype. In other words, it is lighter than being a 50% scale AC75 would indicate.

Top international sailing journalist, Justin Chisholm, is a member of the AC37 Recon Team assigned to monitor and report on INEOS Britannia. Here’s his observations after following the British team for the session:

The British team made the best of a tricky day out on Palma Bay which began with a northerly offshore breeze that quickly ramped to 18 knots, as the crew were finishing their sail hoists.

The resulting flat water along the Palma city for comfortable self-take offs and the four person crew – made up of Giles Scott and Ben Cornish helming with Leigh McMillan and Bleddyn Mon on trimming and flight control – made multiple fast runs along the Palma city front between Arenel and the entrance to Palma port. One foiling gybe and a rough and ready foiling tack were witnessed.

The team used a J#3 for the first time on the LEQ12 and the boat looked comfortable and relatively stable in that configuration.

When the breeze faded quickly to eight knots at shortly after 1400 the crew dropped the J#3 before being towed to the westerly side of the bay where a new 8-10 knot breeze was blowing from the south west.

After switching to the J#1 1 they set off foiling at 25 knots on starboard. The wind then dropped to six knots and despite just managing to get foiling twice using a tow the crew were unable to maintain flight.

After towing back to the easterly bay on two foils the crew finally called it quits at 1630 as the wind had all but disappeared.

Exclusive: Video shows moment P&O Britannia cruise ship crashes at Mallorca harbour

F ootage has captured the moment a P&O cruise ship carrying thousands of British tourists crashed into another vessel near to the shore of the Spanish island of Mallorca, leaving some onboard suffering injuries.

The video, sent to WalesOnline by passenger Ben Griffiths, shows the extremely popular MV Britannia ship slowly moving towards the smaller vessel before colliding with it. The crash is followed by a loud horn.

Multiple holidaymakers staying in Mallorca and aboard the cruise ship on Sunday have told WalesOnline how the ship had been forced into the other vessel due to a storm which swept through the island on Sunday morning. Officially the cause of the collision remains unconfirmed.

Pictures sent to WalesOnline from the ship, which you can see here, show passenger decks damaged following the collision, with tables and chairs in disarray. A separate video sent by Welsh holidaymakers also in Mallorca, which you can see here, shows the extent of the storm that hit the island on Sunday as it wrecked one Mallorca hotel, even turning sunbeds over and into the pool and sending loungers flying through the air.

Following the sounding of the horn on the Britannia on Sunday morning all passengers were told to remain inside their cabins, passengers explained, while being told, “this is not a drill”, by the captain after they heard a loud bang and saw debris floating in the water, they said.

One Welsh woman, who is on board with her partner and two children, said: “We were docked overnight in Palma and the wind was so strong our anchors broke and we blew out into another ship. We were up browsing on our phones in bed and heard the big horn after the bang. It was panic stations, I was bawling my eyes out. We went out onto our balcony and could see debris in the ocean and all the damage to the side of the boat and our lifeboat.”

The Welsh passengers said the Britannia ship was anchored less than a mile from the shore following the accident. Other passengers have since reported the ship has since docked again at Palma for the night while further checks are carried out to establish if the ship is seaworthy.

Another passenger, Mark Beckwith, told WalesOnline on Sunday evening: "The captain has and is doing an amazingly calm job with the fantastic crew. It's very calm and relaxed onboard now and we are just redocking to collect the passengers who were off the ship for the duration of the incident."

A spokesperson for P&O Cruises said: “On Sunday, August 27, P&O Cruises Britannia was involved in a weather-related incident while alongside in Palma de Mallorca. A small number of individuals sustained minor injuries and are being cared for by the onboard medical centre. To allow our technical teams to make an assessment Britannia will remain alongside in Palma de Mallorca tonight with onboard entertainment and activities scheduled.”

The Britannia set sail from Southampton on August 18 for the Mediterranean cruise including stops at Cadiz and Ibiza and had been due to leave Mallorca on Sunday afternoon. It can carry up to 3,647 passengers and is 330 metres in length. She has a crew of 1,398 and cost £473m.

Video: unexpected storm: p&o britannia's harrowing experience in palma de mallorca, when we think of cruise vacations, images of relaxation, exquisite dining, and stunning destinations usually come to mind. however, the recent incident involving the p&o cruises ship britannia serves as a reminder that mother nature can sometimes disrupt even the most meticulously planned journeys. see the update below what p&o's response has been from a damaged lifeboat and to compensate passengers..

The Storm and the Unforeseen Incident

On the morning of August 27, 2023, a sudden and powerful storm struck Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The storm brought heavy rain, high winds, and even hail to the area, creating challenging conditions for both residents and visitors. Among those impacted was the P&O Britannia, which was docked at the pier in Palma de Mallorca.

As the storm intensified, the cruise ship unexpectedly broke free from its mooring lines and began drifting away from the pier. Despite the best efforts of the ship's crew, the Britannia collided with a nearby tanker vessel named Castillo de Arteaga. Both ships sustained minor damage, including scrapes, scuffs, and bent railings. The collision also led to some damage to one of Britannia's lifeboats and debris in the water.

Safety Measures and Impact

Responding swiftly to the situation, the ship's captain instructed all guests to remain in their staterooms. Fortunately, despite the collision and the storm's severity, the ship's structure and safety were not compromised. Damage was reported primarily on Deck 5, and no significant injuries occurred among passengers or crew.

After the incident, Britannia anchored offshore for several hours to wait for the storm to pass and ensure safe docking. With the assistance of tugboats, the ship was later able to dock once again, allowing guests to return on board after their shore excursions. The crew's efficient response and adherence to safety protocols helped prevent a more serious outcome. This event comes as other ports in Spain are starting to regulate cruise ship docking .

Passenger Perspective: A Firsthand Account of the Britannia Incident

In the midst of the unexpected storm that struck Palma de Mallorca on August 27, passengers aboard the P&O Britannia found themselves in a situation that no one could have anticipated. One of those passengers, Ricky Stubbs, shared his harrowing experience, shedding light on the chaos and the remarkable response from both fellow passengers and the ship's crew.

A Sudden Turn of Events

Ricky Stubbs and his children were moments away from disembarking the Britannia when the unexpected occurred. He recalled, "We were at the stairwell next to the sunset bar. A loud crash came from the bar and the door flung open with people running in. Within seconds there was more crashing followed by chaos as people were trying to escape the onslaught of wind and rain."

The abruptness of the storm's impact caught everyone off guard. Stubbs vividly described the scene of panic and confusion as passengers sought refuge from the wind and rain, and some suffered minor injuries from falling debris or tripping over. The suddenness of the situation left people both frightened and distraught.

Calm Amidst Chaos

In the midst of the turmoil, Stubbs highlighted the efforts of both fellow guests and the ship's staff. He shared, "People were being ushered in by other guests and staff. You could clearly see some had injuries due to either falling over or debris flying around, and people were distraught."

However, amidst the chaos, he noted the impressive composure demonstrated by the ship's crew. He added, "A couple of minutes later the captain came over the speaker asking all guests to return to their rooms until further instructions." This quick response from the captain not only ensured the safety of the passengers but also kept them informed about the situation.

Admiration for the Crew

Ricky Stubbs extended his admiration for the ship's crew, particularly the captain, for their professionalism and leadership during the crisis. He expressed, "Huge respect for the captain and all the staff as they managed to stay calm and keep everyone updated. The captain made announcements every 10-15 minutes once we were back in our cabins, and they did a great job in a stressful situation."

Stubbs' account of the incident sheds light on the crucial role that well-trained and composed crew members play in maintaining order and ensuring the safety of passengers during unexpected events. Their ability to provide timely updates and guidance in the face of adversity helped alleviate the tension and uncertainty that naturally arises in such situations.

A Reminder of Resilience

As the P&O Britannia's passengers and crew navigate the aftermath of this incident, Ricky Stubbs' firsthand account stands as a testament to the resilience of both human beings and the cruise industry. Despite the unexpected challenges presented by the storm, passengers and crew worked together to ensure safety, and the experience showcased the importance of staying composed in the face of adversity.

In the end, this incident serves as a powerful reminder that travel, even on luxurious cruise ships, can be met with unforeseen challenges. It underscores the importance of preparedness, flexibility, and the unwavering commitment to safety that guides both passengers and crew through unexpected circumstances.

Potential Itinerary Changes

The incident occurred during Britannia's ongoing 14-night Mediterranean cruise, which departed from Southampton, UK. The ship had visited Cadiz, Cartagena, and Ibiza before its scheduled visit to Palma de Mallorca. Following the incident, it's uncertain whether the ship will need to remain in Palma de Mallorca for repairs, potentially affecting the rest of the cruise's itinerary.

The ship was slated to visit Gibraltar before returning to Southampton on September 1. The extent of the damage and the time required for repairs will likely determine whether the call to Gibraltar will be adjusted, canceled, or proceeded with as planned.

A small group of individuals were also receiving care on the vessel after experiencing minor injuries, as stated by P&O earlier. The captain informed passengers beforehand that there was no structural damage. Russ Dawson, residing in east London, was requested by cruise personnel to disembark earlier on Monday, but he stated that he refused to leave the ship. He recounted, "We received a call to our cabin, instructing us to bring our passports to the reception because we were scheduled to disembark at five o'clock, but I informed them that I wouldn't be departing." He further added, "I assumed people would be asked to leave the ship based on their muster station's proximity to the damaged boat, but that didn't appear to be the situation because it wasn't the case for us."

People on board the ship captured videos and images of the incident, depicting the emergency response and debris floating in the sea. Mr. Dawson was observing the weather from his balcony when the collision occurred, noting that the weather had suddenly turned stormy and the sky had darkened. "I noticed this boat beginning to turn around, and I thought, 'It's going to collide with us'," he recounted. "There was a loud bang upon impact, followed by screams, shouts, and panic." Mr. Dawson mentioned that P&O had extended a 20% discount on his next cruise as a goodwill gesture, although he felt it fell far short of compensating for the situation.

Safety First: Lessons from Recent Incidents

While cruise ships are designed to withstand a variety of weather conditions, incidents like the one involving Britannia serve as a reminder that unforeseen events can still occur. Recent incidents involving other cruise ships breaking free from their moorings underscore the importance of vigilant monitoring and prompt action in response to adverse weather conditions.

In recent times, several cruise ships have faced incidents where they broke free from their moorings due to adverse weather conditions. Here are a few notable instances:

MSC Musica (MSC Cruises) : In February 2023, the MSC Musica, operated by MSC Cruises, broke free from its moorings in Brazil during a sudden squall. The ship drifted away from the dock, leading to a temporary evacuation of passengers and causing minor damage to the ship and the terminal.

Queen Mary 2 (Cunard Line) : Also in 2023, the Queen Mary 2, a Cunard Line ship, experienced an incident in Civitavecchia, Italy. Strong winds caused the ship to break free from its moorings, leading to the collapse of both forward and aft gangways. The ship was safely secured, and no injuries were reported.

Norwegian Prima (Norwegian Cruise Line) : In July 2023, the Norwegian Prima, operated by Norwegian Cruise Line, broke free from its rope moorings while docked in Zeebrugge, Belgium. The ship lost gangways in the incident, and crew members worked quickly to stabilize the situation.

These incidents underscore the importance of cruise ship crews and port authorities closely monitoring weather conditions and taking necessary precautions to prevent accidents when adverse weather strikes.

The P&O Britannia's recent encounter with a sudden storm and subsequent collision is a testament to the unpredictable nature of travel, even in the realm of luxury cruise vacations. It also highlights the resilience and preparedness of both the crew and the ship itself when faced with unexpected challenges. As the cruise industry continues to prioritize passenger safety, incidents like this one serve as valuable reminders of the importance of flexibility and adaptability in the face of changing circumstances.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
