33 years ago, Keanu Reeves made the smartest time-travel movie ever — and also the dumbest

An unlikely duo leads one of the most thought-provoking takes on time travel.

Keanu Reeves in Bill & Ted

On the face of it, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is a dumb movie but purposefully so.

The movie’s selling point is that the very future of human civilization rests on the unthinking shoulders of two teenage idiots from Southern California. It’s not that they’re jerks — if anything, both Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) and Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) are almost impossibly well-intentioned — but rather, just that the two of them are… well, as dumb as rocks, even when gifted the opportunity to travel through time and learn from history’s greatest minds.

That’s all a feint, however. While it’s true that there is more than a small amount of stupid to be found in the 1989 comedy classic, the fact of the matter is that Excellent Adventure is, ultimately, one of the smartest time travel movies ever made.

For those unfamiliar with the movie, the story is deceptively simple: Bill and Ted are about to flunk their high school history class. If that happens, Ted’s father has threatened to send him to military school to straighten him out, separating the two best friends and, as it’s revealed, preventing a future utopia for humanity from coming into existence.

An agent from that utopia, Rufus (the wonderful George Carlin), is sent back in time to ensure the two pass the class. Rufus allows them to use his time machine to bring famous historical figures to the present day. After some hijinks and shenanigans, Bill and Ted do so, passing the test and finding true love with a couple of 15th-century babes in the process.

Sounds pretty straightforward, right? On that level, it is, but what makes Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure so notable in the history of time travel stories is its approach to the entire idea of time travel and what that means in a bigger sense. Unlike almost every other time travel story, Excellent Adventure quietly suggests that everything we do has already been predetermined, that free will is just an illusion, and that we should stop worrying about it all and just party on, regardless.

THE RULES OF TIME TRAVEL is an Inverse special issue exploring the evolution of science fiction's most imaginative sub-genre. From Marty McFly to Avengers: Endgame .

It’s not that Bill and Ted kidnap major historical figures and bring them to the present day without utterly obliterating history. Beethoven discovering synthesizers in a shopping mall and writing his own music years ahead of time is just one of the events that would have been something to avoid instead of celebrate. Because, as Avengers: Endgame taught us, that kind of thing can just create alternate timelines if they need to be explained away. But those aren’t the time travel rules of Excellent Adventure , as one of the film’s climactic sequences makes clear.

As part of the previously mentioned hijinks and shenanigans, the various historical figures set loose in the San Dimas mall get arrested and placed in the cells of the local police station, where Ted’s hardass father (Hal Landon Jr.) is the police captain. Bill and Ted need to rescue them, but they need to do so in a hurry because their class presentation is about to begin — and so, they come up with a plan involving time travel, of course.

“The movie argues for a world in which time is a fixed , unchanging thing.”

Like the film itself, their plan is incredibly straightforward and deceptively intricate at once. Aware of how little time they think they have, the two make a list of things they will do in the future using their time machine to travel to their recent past. It creates a present filled with circumstances that allow them to break everyone free from jail.

It’s a plan that establishes that going back in time doesn’t create a different timeline, because then the objects Bill and Ted have planned to plant for themselves wouldn’t be there (They’d be in a parallel timeline). That all means bringing Billy the Kid, Socrates, et al. to their future and then returning them back to the past didn’t change history because all of this time travel had already happened and was always meant to happen.

Socrates and Billy the Kid help Bill and Ted pass history class in Excellent Adventure.

Socrates and Billy the Kid help Bill and Ted pass history class in Excellent Adventure .

All of this is laid out early on in the film, where Bill and Ted are convinced to travel through time in the first place by their future selves. There’s even a point where the future versions of themselves remember to remind the past version of Ted to wind his watch… which we as an audience have already seen earlier in the movie from the perspective of their younger selves.

By creating these smart, funny, self-referential time loops, the movie argues for a world in which time is a fixed, unchanging thing to ensure that everything happens as it’s supposed to. (2020’s Bill & Ted Face The Music throws several enjoyable wrenches in this line of thinking, but that’s another story.)

But wait, you ask: isn’t the entire premise of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure that the characters go through time to not flunk history, thereby avoiding separation and no longer creating the utopian future where Rufus comes from? Well, yes. But the thing is everything Rufus, Bill, and Ted do in the movie – everything everyone does in the movie – just guarantees that the timeline stays exactly the same as it was supposed to be. The timeline, once again, does not change.

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is a movie that plays dumb but has smart – and, honestly, unusually pessimistic – things to say about time travel and what it could mean in practical terms if it were to exist. It’s simultaneously a riotous comedy that never loses sight of the jokes and an unexpectedly thought-provoking example of history being immutable. Not bad for two guys from Southern California.

Critic Reviews for Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

Audience reviews for bill & ted's excellent adventure.

I was clearly in the mood for something goofy and silly when I picked this one. It's impressive to see how utterly expressive Keanu Reeves actually was in this movie. Perhaps expressive isn't really even the right term to describe it, but he put in a lot more effort into this role, one that doesn't really require him to do much anyway, in comparison to some of his later roles. I like Keanu a lot actually, but there's no denying that he's not a particularly good actor. Perhaps being a goofball, which is what both Bill and Ted are, just came more naturally to him than other roles. Maybe that's just me. His delivery is still wooden, but there's a little more life behind his performance. This movie definitely had a bit of a rough start, but it eventually settled down into a silly and fun way to spend 90 minutes. I'm not gonna say this film is the best time travel film that is out there, hell there were better time travel movies released in the same decade, Back to the Future, as if you hadn't guessed that already. But there's a certain effort and cleverness about the time travel aspect that adds something to the film. I can't explain what that something else, but it makes it more than just your average teen comedy. It also has a pretty positive message all things considered about, essentially, being kind to each other. Of course this message is delivered in the most 80s way possible with the phrase 'Be excellent to each other and party on dudes' being the big point of emphasis of this theme. Wouldn't surprise me if some form of hippies wrote and directed this movie. Some movies will have this same type of message shoehorned into a film full of negative gender, or racial, stereotypes and mean spirited jokes. See Grown Ups 2, or any Sandler movie for that matter. This film, as far as I can tell, while dealing in stereotypes for the most part, it doesn't do so in a negative way whatsoever. At least I don't think it does. Perhaps I'm wrong about that. I mean, really, this is exactly what a goofy teen comedy about time travel from the 80s would look like. I don't count BTTF in that list because there's so much more going on there than just goofy time travel teen comedy. It's silly and it's fun and that's really all it needed to be. Don't expect to be impressed by this film's experimental artistry or examination of the human condition. It's a film about two goofy idiots travelling through time in order to ace their oral report, it's not Citizen Kane.

keanu reeves movie time travel

One of the greatest comedies of the '80s, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is most triumphant. The story follows two high school seniors who are about to fail their history class, until they receive a time machine from the future to help them pass their final. Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, and George Carlin lead the cast, and give great performances. Additionally, the comedy is irresistibly hilarious and over-the-top. And, the soundtrack is wickedly awesome. A wyld and crazy goofball comedy, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is outrageously funny. "Party on dudes!"

It's fun and goofy but quite frankly not a great film. Nonetheless, it is a creative way to view historical figures and what their reaction might be to the world of the eighties. Kudos to Carlin for his depiction of Rufus.

The film is a genuine cult classic and with the third film in post production, I just thought, what better time to revisit the series. Bill and Ted is one of those films that you can flick on and watch without thinking too much about it. Strong emphasis on fun and the plot is quirky and original. The cast is great, and they managed to include some strong support characters. I honestly thought I had outgrown this film, but it's actually intelligently plotted. The writers and filmmaker are the key here and they ensure this film was one of a kind. This worth an addition to your library or if you want to save some room, revisit the film. Incredibly guilty pleasure film that succeeds at becoming exactly what it wanted to be. 08/01/2020

George Wells (and played by Rod Taylor), who uses a machine of his own design to travel to the far-off future, discovering that humanity is now become two new species - the enlightened Eloi and the monstrous, underground-dwelling Morlocks. It's a clever, devious mystery that also stars Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, and Jeffrey Wright.

9. Time After Time (1979)

keanu reeves movie time travel

Time After Time 's bonkers hook -- that being Malcolm McDowell's H.G. Wells using his time machine to track a fleeing Jack the Ripper (the late David Warner) to 1979 San Fransisco -- actually makes for an entertaining, oft emotional film. This playfulness with both sci-fi and real history forms a fun, irresistible yarn that has to be seen to be believed. Wrath of Khan's Nicholas Meyer directs while Mary Steenburgen co-stars.

8. The Terminator (1984)

keanu reeves movie time travel

Where to Watch: Prime Video, Fubo, Showtime, AMC+, or rentable on most platforms

This entry is a bit of a cheat since we're also lumping T2: Judgment Day into the mix. Hey, same continuing story, same director! That being said, James Cameron's gritty, great sci-fi bloodbath, The Terminator largely popularized the idea of going back in time and killing someone to change the present (along with larger, dystopian concepts of a world-ending A.I. uprising). Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 and Michael Biehn's frazzled future freedom fighter use our present era (okay, 1984) like a battleground in this sci-fi firestorm.

Check out our guide on how to watch the Terminator movies in order .

7. About Time (2013)

keanu reeves movie time travel

Where to Watch: Starz add-ons, or rentable on most platforms.

Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams star in this delightful time-tinkering rom-com from Love, Actually's Richard Curtis, as Gleeson plays a young man with the ability to time travel who tries to change his past over and over in order to improve his life, and also win the girl of his dreams. Bill Nighy co-stars in this beautifully sincere film featuring phenomenal chemistry and an intriguing take on hereditary time-hopping abilities that make About Time worth watching.

6. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

keanu reeves movie time travel

The "time loop" concept went big with alien apocalypse flick Edge of Tomorrow (confused so much with the film's tagline "Live, Die Repeat" that Blu-ray box art waaaay emphasized the latter).  Mr. & Mrs. Smith's Doug Liman directs this terrific Tom Cruise vehicle, about humanity losing war against an invading alien army that always seems to be several steps ahead. Once Cruise's over-his-head army public affairs officer gets a taste of their cosmic precognitive power, he finds himself dying over and over in battle, unable to escape the day. Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton co-star in this keenly-crafted, funny alien actioner.

5. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

keanu reeves movie time travel

Where to Watch: Prime Video, Cinemax Go, Fubo, Roku Channel (w/ ads), Pluto TV (w/ ads), Tubi (w/ ads) or rentable on most platforms

Two teenage metalheads from San Dimas, California recklessly, and hilariously, mosh through time, collecting (okay, mostly kidnapping) famous historical figures from in order to ace a crucial test in one of the most entertaining movies from the '80s, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure . Smart and dumb collide in fabulous ways in this roller-coaster of sublime idiocy. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter embodied these dense-but-sweet wannabe rockers to a "T," fast forming an iconic comedy duo.

Check out our guide to the best Keanu Reeves movies of all time for more.

4. Primer (2004)

keanu reeves movie time travel

Where to Watch: Rentable on Amazon, Apple, and YouTube

Shoestring budget indie film, Primer, which acts as a no-frills psychological thought experiment about the accidental discovery of time travel, is one of the most cerebral takes on temporal tampering ever. It's a stimulating, challenging chronicle of two engineers who dabble in time travel, testing its limits, only to discover the awful ramifications and consequences of fourth-dimensional meddling. It's twisty, math-y, and full tilt fascinating.

Check out IGN's review of Primer .

3. Groundhog Day (1993)

keanu reeves movie time travel

Where to Watch: Prime Video, Fubo, AMC+, or rentable on most platforms.

There were certainly "time loop" stories -- in film, TV, and literature -- before Harold Ramis' Groundhog Day , but this early '90s hit popularized the concept to the degree of being considered the "Grandaddy" of the subgenre. Mercilessly funny and surprisingly endearing, Groundghog Day pushed the format in new directions. All of this is accentuated by Bill Murray's exceptional performance as a shallow TV weatherman, Phil Connors, who gets stuck in a repeating February 2nd nightmare with no true explanation (other than perhaps the universe forcing him to become a better human). Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, and Scooter the Groundhog co-star.

2. 12 Monkeys (1995)

keanu reeves movie time travel

Where to Watch: Cinemax Go, or rentable on most platforms

Director Terry Gilliam's insane, lavish visuals stuck mainstream pay dirt with the inventive, star-studded 12 Monkeys (which also became a pretty great TV series 20 years later, by the way). Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt (who received an Oscar nomination) headlined this warped, serpentine tale of a future prisoner, from a wasteland world all but wiped out by a virus, sent back in time to track the plague's origins. "Science ain't an exact science" Willis' Cole is told as he clumsily, and harshly, arrives in both the right and wrong times, piecing together the puzzle, thinking the disease may have begun as the brainchild of a mental patient (Pitt) from a wealthy family. 12 Monkeys is freaky, funky, and full of surprises.

1. Back to the Future

keanu reeves movie time travel

Where to Watch: Fubo, AMC+, or rentable on most platforms

Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future is not only considered one of the best front-to-back movies of all time but it laid the groundwork for time travel in a way that's influenced just about every sci-fi property since. And yes, we're cheating here again, like we did with Terminator, and also including the film's two sequels in this entry too (same story, same director!).

All the ingredients came together in all the right ways for this pivotal pop-culture milestone, tracking young Marty McFly's adventures through time as he tries to set things right for himself and his family (lest he and his siblings wind up erased or his own future kids wind up delinquents). Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd create a time-hopping team for the ages (inspiring the gruesome guffaws of Rick & Morty) as Marty and local disgraced inventor (every town's got one, right?) Doc Brown. Back to the Future is the apex of witty, exciting sci-fi.

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock Are Reunited in 'The Lake House'

keanu reeves movie time travel

By A.O. Scott

  • June 16, 2006

"The Lake House," a wondrously illogical time-travel romance directed by Alejandro Agresti, is notable mainly for reuniting Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, who together survived a harrowing bus ride in "Speed." That was 12 years ago — how time flies! — and since then they have gone their separate movie-star ways, into the "Miss Congeniality" and "Matrix" franchises, as well as into a startlingly long list of bad movies, of which I will mention only "Hope Floats" and "Sweet November."

But these two stars have a habit of being more appealing than their material. This is not just a matter of excellent facial bone structure, but also of a sly ability to play simultaneously in and against type. Because Ms. Bullock and Mr. Reeves have become such familiar screen presences, their performances turn out, more often than not, to be genuinely surprising. Ms. Bullock likes to be difficult, to temper her radiance with grouchiness, while Mr. Reeves, when the mood strikes, can inflect his mild, baffled affect with meanness, moodiness and even a hint of thorny intelligence.

So while the general public has not, as far as I can tell, been clamoring for a reunion, "The Lake House" nonetheless functions as a fascinating experiment. Is the chemistry — or, given that "Speed" was all about the velocity of bodies in motion, the physics — still there? It is, although in this case the viewer will also have to grapple with a heavy dose of Hollywood metaphysics, which keeps the leads apart for most of the movie.

At the start, Ms. Bullock's character, Kate, a stressed-out physician who has just completed her residency, moves out of the architectural curiosity that gives the picture its title, leaving a note in the mailbox for the next tenant. That would be Mr. Reeves's Alex, a soulful real estate developer who turns out actually to be the previous tenant. Some unexplained wrinkle in the space-time continuum — or a serious glitch at the postal service — has made it possible for Kate, in 2006, to correspond with Alex, who is still making his way through 2004.

"Not much has changed," Kate writes to him at one point, when he asks what things are like in the future. His general lack of curiosity — he doesn't ask who won the presidential election or the World Series, or pester her for stock market tips — is in keeping with the fuzziness of the film's conceit. If you approach it with a rational, skeptical mind, "The Lake House" will fall apart almost immediately. But where is the fun in that? You'll just have to accept that a book can travel through the mail to a date earlier than the one printed on its copyright page, and that a fancy Chicago restaurant will hold an unconfirmed reservation for two years.

"The Lake House," while completely preposterous, is not without charm. Both Kate and Alex drive well-preserved old cars — hers is a copper-colored Mustang that appears to be of late-60's vintage, while his pickup truck looks even older — and the movie they inhabit, based on a Korean film called "Il Mare," is an unapologetic throwback to a classic studio genre, the melodrama of impossible love. The social obstacles that used to exist — in the real world and, more intensely, in Production Code-governed Hollywood — have lost their forbidding power, which may be why supernatural and science fiction touches are required to keep the idea of romantic longing alive.

Kate and Alex, by means of handwritten letters placed in that mailbox (and read in back-and-forth voice- over to simulate real-time conversations), fall deeply and achingly in love. There is some competition for their affection. Alex is coolly, almost sadistically indifferent to a co-worker (Lynn Collins) who all but throws herself at his feet, while Kate has recently broken up with a perfectly decent but manifestly inadequate fiancé (Dylan Walsh), who keeps showing up no matter what year it is. She also has a gentle mother (Willeke van Ammelrooy) and a wise boss (Shohreh Aghdashloo), who serve as confidantes, while Alex is burdened with an imperious, narcissistic father (Christopher Plummer), a famous architect who designed that strange, impractical house by the lake.

The contrivances of the plot, which may require occasional glances at a multiyear date book, are smoothly handled by David Auburn's script and by Mr. Agresti's direction. Visually, "The Lake House" is elegant without being terribly showy, with a connoisseur's eye for Chicago's architectural glories. But the movie is, above all, a showcase for its stars, who seem gratifyingly comfortable in their own skin and delighted to be in each other's company again, in another deeply silly, effortlessly entertaining movie.

"The Lake House" is rated PG (Parental guidance suggested). It has occasional dark moods and sad moments, but no bad language or sex.

Add these titles to your watch list to awaken the time traveler within you. From Japanese animations to over-the-top comedies to dramas saturated with social commentary, these films all have one thing in common: They'll boggle your mind and make you think, while keeping you entertained. But remember, no matter how cool it looks to fly in a time-traveling spaceship, the present moment is and always will be the most important time there is.

13 Going on 30 (2004)

Before anyone tries to suggest that 13 Going on 30 isn't a time travel movie, I'd like to point out that Jenna Rink seamlessly moves between the present and the future, navigating alternate timelines with ease. In this female-led riff on the Big story, Jenna Rink wishes to escape high school and become “thirty, flirty, and thriving.” With the help of a little magic wishing dust, Jenna gets her dream, waking up in the future as a successful magazine writer who looks just like Jennifer Garner. However, she's lost touch with her childhood bestie Matty (Mark Ruffalo), and she can't help but wonder what could have been.

Tenet (2020)

Christopher Nolan's epic sci-fi flick stars Denzel Washington's son, John David Washington, as The Protagonist, a former CIA agent enlisted with stopping World War III, which is no mean feat. In order to prevent the world's total destruction, The Protagonist learns to bend time, leading to some pretty trippy storylines. Robert Pattinson and The Crown 's Elizabeth Debicki co-star.

Meet Cute (2022)

Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson make a delightful couple in Peacock's deliciously dark romantic comedy Meet Cute . Cuoco plays Sheila, a woman having suicidal thoughts until she discovers a time machine in the back of a nail salon. Chronically unlucky in love, Sheila decides to go back in time 24 hours so that she can re-live her first date with Gary (Davidson), trying to create the perfect evening each time. However, the ability to time travel comes with some drawbacks, and the temptation to mess with history is pretty overbearing, especially in the search for true love.

About Time (2013)

Richard Curtis' About Time employs time travel in an extremely inventive way to tell a (probably sweet) love story; though there's been much discourse around the story's portrayal of consent, or lack thereof. The movie follows Tim (Domhnall Gleeson), a man looking for love, who inherits the ability to travel through time from his father. Using his newfound gift, Tim courts Mary (Rachel McAdams), attempting to build a relationship in spite of any obstacles in the way.

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass star in this intriguing indie film about the possibility of time travel. Plaza plays an aspiring journalist who takes on a very strange assignment involving a bizarre personal ad. “You'll get paid after we get back,” it reads. “Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED.” What starts as an unlikely hoax soon challenges everyone's beliefs about the ability to travel through time.

Happy Death Day 2U (2019)

2017's Happy Death Day delighted fans with its innovative twist on the time loop comedy. 2019's Happy Death Day 2U takes the concept to another level, and will have time travel aficionados screaming. Having escaped from her original time loop, Tree (Jessica Rothe) finds herself being hunted by the Babyface killer once more. After one of Tree's classmates develops an experimental quantum reactor, Tree finds herself caught in a brand new loop, and she's forced to find even more inventive ways to escape.

Needle in a Timestack (2021)

Needle in a Timestack is a romantic drama presenting an alternate future in which the rich are able to time travel for fun. However, these “time jaunts” have very real consequences, and often send ripples through the lives of the less wealthy. The film focuses on a happily married couple whose relationship is threatened when a wealthy ex decides to tamper with the timeline. The all-star cast includes Cynthia Erivo, Orlando Bloom, Leslie Odom Jr., and Freida Pinto.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Before dedicating his life to the Avatar franchise , James Cameron was responsible for a plethora of fun blockbusters, including Terminator 2: Judgment Day . Expanding upon the first film, Sarah Connor, played by Linda Hamilton, finds herself targeted by Skynet once again. This time, a killer T-1000 Terminator is sent back in time to assassinate Sarah's teenage son, John (Edward Furlong), the future leader of the resistance. Meanwhile, a reprogrammed, and much funnier, T-800 Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is sent back to protect Connor. Easily the best installment in the franchise.

By some magical turn of events, they're able to communicate by writing letters to one another via the Lake House's mailbox. Despite the distance between them, Alex and Kate strike up a romance thanks to their time traveling letters.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)

A list of the best time travel movies wouldn't be complete with at least one of the Bill & Ted movies on it. 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is responsible for launching Keanu Reeves's career, and it remains one of the most enjoyable films from the era. In the first movie, Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are failing history, until they magically discover a phone booth that just so happens to be a time machine. The academically-challenged pair meet some of history's most important figures, who they enlist to help with their dreaded school assignment.

Groundhog Day (1993)

Groundhog Day may belong in the "time loop" sub-genre of time travel movies, but it most definitely deserves a place on this list. Bill Murray's performance as disgruntled weatherman Phil is literally iconic, and the fun begins when he's set to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania for the annual Groundhog Day event. Unfortunately for Phil, his worst nightmare is realized when he wakes up the next morning to find that he must relive February 2 again. The hilarious time loop is made even better by Murray's co-star, Andie MacDowell.

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)

This surreal A24 sci-fi flick is a brilliant take on the multiverse. Teeming with enchanting visuals, the action film features a Chinese-American woman named Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) who co-owns a little laundromat with her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan). She feels trapped in an unfulfilling marriage and is struggling to make ends meet. However, when she accidentally discovers the multiverse, she is granted an opportunity to reach her full potential. While a tale of time travel, EEAAO is ultimately a story of self discovery. Directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan (collectively nicknamed “The Daniels”) are the minds behind this epic inter-dimensional adventure, which brings to light the powers hidden within every individual. You may want to consider the advice of one viewer who said, “Don’t do drugs, watch this instead.”

See You Yesterday (2019)

An amalgamation of time travel fantasy, political critique, and powerful family ties, See You Yesterday is a movie you don't want to miss. Produced by Spike Lee and directed by Stefon Bristol, who was taken under Professor Lee's wing while attending NYU's graduate film program, the story features two prestigious teenagers who spend all their spare time working on scientific inventions that eventually lead them to develop time travel technology. When her brother is caught in a fatal encounter with the police, Claudette “CJ” Walker (Eden Duncan-Smith) builds two time machines that can help her and her friend Sebastian (Danté Crichlow) change the series of events that lead to CJ’s brother getting killed. But their experience leads them to time travel's greatest truth: All actions have a ripple effect that can change the present moment in unseen ways. The film critically engages with police brutality and was made by a team of creators of predominantly African descent to bring you this time-travel adventure that will leave you entertained, engaged, and inspired.

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

Hot tubs have a good reputation for their steamy bubbles and even steamier memories. But what if they also doubled as time travel devices? This hilarious guilty-pleasure comedy features three pals who are caught in a rut in their adulthood, from being freshly dumped by a girlfriend, to being stuck in a dead-end job, to drinking away the sorrows of having accomplished absolutely nothing by the age of 40. Needless to say, these friends could all use a life upgrade. Luckily, when they venture into a magic hot tub at a winter resort, they accidentally travel back to 1986 and are given a second chance at life. Their tumultuous journey through the past leads them to be more conscious about the future. Plus, they have the opportunity to do a few things differently. When the hot tub teleports them back into the present day, each of them is better than they left off. Most hot tubs leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, but this one took it to a whole other level.

Trying to Understand ‘The Lake House’s Time Travel Will Break Your Brain

The Lake House

Where to Stream:

  • The Lake House

The Lake House has just about everything you could want from a vaguely forgettable romantic drama. It stars two lovable and attractive celebrities — Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. It’s set against a gorgeous lake filled with cosy and peaceful scenes. Our leading lady, Bullock’s doctor Kate, is dating another man even though we all KNOW Reeves’ architect Alex is her real soulmate. Overall The Lake House is a sweet movie that’s perfect to throw on and half watch on a weeknight. Which is good because it makes absolutely no sense.

The Lake House should be renamed the The Worst Mailbox Ever because that descriptor better describes its place in film history. The 2006 drama was directed by Alejandro Agresti and is based on Il Mare , a South Korean film with the same premise. Basically Sandra Bullock lives in the same lake house as Keanu Reeves, only she lives in it two years in the future. How do we know this? Because the pair keep mailing each other letters through a magical mailbox that can time travel for reasons only the writers of this movie and God understand.

As their pen pal relationship deepens, Bullock and Reeves fall in love, and after a couple of lazy Butterfly Effect- plot twists, they get married. It’s all very sweet. But let’s focus on the real star of this movie — that mailbox.

From the first letter Bullock and Reeves send each other to the moment Reeves appears to profess his love in an aggressive turtleneck, The Lake House’ s take on time travel is bonkers. Let’s just start with how Bullock and Reeves come to realize their mailbox is a temporal portal. In 2004, Reeves finds a letter in his new home’s mailbox asking him to forward the mail of the previous tenant and apologizing for the paw prints on the wall. All of that seems good and normal except for one small detail; there aren’t any paw prints on the wall. After a few more back and forths, Reeves slowly comes to realize that Bullock, her letter, and those paw prints exist two years in the future in 2006. That’s how we start things.

But that leaves so many questions. Presumably Sandra Bullock was able to send letters from that mailbox before Keanu Reeves moved in two years ago. Why did this time travel portal randomly open up when Neo showed up? Or if it always existed, does that mean Bullock’s mail keeps disappearing? How did she pay her bills? Now that Reeves’ main connection to the United States Postal Service is a tunnel into the year that Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack” was popular, how does he pay his bills? Do people keep leaving this house because of this unreliable mailbox?

But look at how great Bullock and Reeves are together. You can forgive these crazy time-traveling kids.

Stream It Or Skip It: 'Gamestop: Rise of the Players' on Hulu, an Entertaining Documentary in Which the Underdogs Topple the Evil Giant

Is 'ozark's lake magic, everybody wants to bone the 'lost in space' robot, this 'roseanne'/'toy story' fan theory makes a surprising amount of sense.

All of this timely tomfoolery would be fine if The Lake House didn’t create its own deadly and insane paradox. Gabe Delahaye summed up the movie’s dramatic high point more precisely for Stereogum , but The Lake House essentially ends with 2007 Sandra Bullock realizing that the man she watched get hit by a bus in 2006 is the same man she loves. Trying to rewrite history, she warns 2005 Keanu Reeves about the accident that will kill 2006 Keanu Reeves. It works and he survives … negating the need to have ever written that letter in the first place.

This doesn’t even touch on the many, many letters from Keanu Reeves that Sandra Bullock received after she moved out the lake house. How did she get those? No one will ever know.

Is it dumb to try and sort through the logic of a romantic movie that’s more interested in how attractive its A-list stars are than anything else? Absolutely. But that hasn’t stopped people from trying. Every few years a new blog post or Reddit thread will appear, trying to sort through the logic of The Lake Hous e. None have been successful. None will ever be.

Now that the movie is on Netflix, maybe someone can finally get to the bottom of this cinematic mystery. But just in case they can’t hey, don’t Bullock and Reeves look great together?

15. The Devil's Advocate (1997)

The Devil's Advocate

The Devil's Advocate is a strange sort of hybrid film. It's part John Grisham-style legal drama, part supernatural horror film, part psychological character study, and part homage to Paradise Lost. But it was a mix that mostly worked, resulting in one of the more unique bullet points on Reeves' resume. He starred here as Kevin Lomax, a gifted attorney with no qualms about defending clearly guilty clients. An invitation to join a prestigious New York law firm leads to serious temptation when Lomax discovers something twisted about one of the firm's partners, John Milton (Al Pacino).

From working for a demon to waging war agaisnt them, Reeves would star as John Constantine, an exorcist/demon hunter reluctantly caught up in the ongoing war between angels and demons on Earth. As far as comic book adaptations go, Constantine isn't all that well-regarded, but ignoring the fact that it's not a great adaptation of DC's Hellblazer comics, Constantine is actually a pretty solid supernatural action flick. The movie borrowed from the seminal storyline "Dangerous Habits" in how it used Constantine's terminal lung cancer as the driving force in his quest to cheat his demonic foes and avoid eternal damnation.

13. The Matrix: Reloaded (2003)

The Matrix: Reloaded

Keanu Reeves and crew returned for this blockbuster Matrix sequel which featured a flying Neo, a freeway chase sequence (that still stands as the best action scene in any Matrix movie), and a crazy Zion dance party (okay, that part's kind of dumb). The Matrix: Reloaded wasn't the instant classic the first film was, as the cyber-mythos began to take over and drag the saga down a bit, but this was still one of the biggest outings of Reeves' career.

12. Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)

Bill & Ted Face the Music

Bill & Ted stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter returned for this sweet, silly decades-later sequel — the third film in the franchise. The story follows the beloved San Dimas wannabe rockers as they work to figure out, after years and years, why they haven't saved the world with their music like they were told they would. Samara Weaving and Brigette Lundy-Paine also star, as Thea and Billie — Bill and Ted's daughters, respectively — in one of the rare long-awaited follow ups that gets it right.

11. Parenthood (1989)

Parenthood

This 1989 Ron Howard movie — that would later get loosely adapted into a successful NBC drama series (after one failed attempt in 1990) — was an ensemble comedy starring Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Rick Moranis, Dianne Wiest, and more in a story about the foibles of family. This wasn't a starring vehicle for Keanu Reeves but he was a part of the mix, playing the endearing "Ted"-style husband of Martha Plimpton's character. It marked an important era when Reeves had solid supporting roles in big-name projects.

10. Always Be My Maybe (2019)

Always Be My Maybe

Speaking of solid supporting roles, Reeves played a gentle parody of himself, or at least of Hollywood types, in splendid rom-com Always Be My Maybe. As the brief boyfriend of Ali Wong's character, Sasha — featuring a double date that was pretentious enough to throw Randall Park's Marcus into a jealous tizzy — Reeves was a scene-stealer.

9. Toy Story 4 (2019)

Toy Story 4

Reeves joined the Toy Story saga in the franchise's fourth (and so far, final) film, voicing Duke Caboom - an amiable Canadian daredevil with a white outfit, modeled after the 1975 Evel Knievel Rally Stunt Cycle toy. Reeves seemlessly slipped into the series and felt at home amongst the Toy Story favorites to help make it one of the best Pixar movies .

Read IGN's review of Toy Story 4 or see more about Toy Story 5 .

8. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

Bram Stoker's Dracula

To be fair, Keanu Reeves took it on the chin for his performace as Jonathan Harker in Francis Ford Coppola's lavish, ghoulish 1992 Dracula film. Treading water a little bit opposite Gary Oldman, who was effortlessly chewing up the scenery around him, Reeves felt slight in the midst of Oldman and Sir Anthony Hopkins. The film itself isn't hindered by any of this, though, and is still considered one of the best entries in early-90s prestige horror . It also makes for a wonderful vampire movie .

7. River's Edge (1986)

River's Edge

River's Edge offers a simple but engaging conflict inspired by a real California murder case. John (Daniel Roebuck) brags to his group of high school friends (including Reeves, Crispin Glover, and Ione Skye) that he raped and murdered a girl. After finding her body, the typically disaffected and emotionally detached teens struggle with the desire to protect their friend and the need to do the right thing.

River's Edge is an early example of the talent actors like Reeves and Glover possessed, and it's as good an answer as anything to the argument that Reeves' can't do straightforward, dramatic roles.

6. Point Break (1991)

Point Break

Before there was a Fast and the Furious franchise, and before Kathryn Bigelow was making hard-hitting war dramas like The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, there was Point Break . Point Break has essentially the same exact plot as the first FF movie, only it came out a decade sooner and featured surfing instead of drag racing as the adrenaline junkies'/criminals' sport of choice.

Reeves starred as college football quarterback-turned-FBI agent Johnny Utah, tasked with infiltrating a band of surfers led by Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) whom is believed to be tied to a string of bank robberies. And much as Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner would do after him, Reeves' Johnny Utah found himself torn between his duty and his newfound loyalty to the free-spirited Bodhi.

5. My Own Private Idaho (1991)

My Own Private Idaho

In the early '90s, Reeves was no doubt looking for some meatier, more offbeat roles to prove he wasn't just "that guy from Bill & Ted." My Own Private Idaho might have reached a more limited audience, but it certainly proved there was more to Reeves than air guitar and a goofy smile.

Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho is very loosely based on Shakespeare's plays Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2, and Henry V. River Phoenix starred as a street hustler named Mikey Waters, while Reeves played his friend and fellow hustler, Scott Favor. Though a bit light on plot, the film dealt with the struggles faced by these young men as they dealt with day-to-day trials, accepting their homosexuality, and Mikey's quest to reconnect with his mother.

4. John Wick (2014)

John Wick

It's up to the individual fan to decide for themselves which John Wick film is their favorite (of the three released so far) but for simplicity's sake, we're using the the first chapter here, from 2014, as it's a thrilling, straight-to-the-point revenge flick about a hitman who "gun-fu"s everyone into an early grave after his dog (gifted to him by his late wife) is killed. Keanu, free from the burden of having to prove himself as an action star all over again here, just became a murder machine and a brand new hit franchise was born.

Read IGN's review of John Wick or check out our guide to movies like John Wick .

3. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

For better or worse, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure defined Reeves' career in the late '80s and early '90s. Reeves starred as the lovable but dimwitted Ted "Theodore" Logan, alongside Alex Winter's equally goofy Bill S. Preston, Esq. Bill and Ted dreamed of pushing their band, The Wyld Stallyns, to rock & roll super-stardom, but first they needed to pass their history final. Luckily for them, the helpful residents of futuristic, utopian San Dimas, CA sent back a time-travelling phone booth to help Bill and Ted gather history's most famous leaders for their project.

The result was a really fun, silly comedy featuring two heroes literally fighting against time, palling around with everyone from Billy the Kid to Abraham Lincoln to an ice cream-chugging, water slide-obsessed Napoleon. Reeves and Winter fit their roles like a glove, portraying Bill and Ted as equal parts surfer dudes and metal heads. It's an essential time travel movie every fan of Reeves should see.

2. Speed (1994)

Speed

Speed is one of the absolute best action movies ever made . It's a suspense-driven stunt spectacular that made the most of its straightforward premise with high-octane set pieces and a great supporting performance from Sandra Bullock.

Reeves turned in a commanding action hero performance as LAPD SWAT team member Jack Traven. Traven is front and center when a rogue bomber (Dennis Hopper) sabotages a city bus, holding the city hostage for millions while the bus is forced to drive over 50 miles an hour at all times (or else - kaboom!). And while that could have resulted in a very repetitive movie, Speed became one of the surprise hits of the mid-'90s action scene, helping cement Reeves' reputation as a star in the process.

1. The Matrix (1999)

The Matrix

In 1999, The Matrix, quite simply, blew everyone's damn minds with a unique blend of cyberpunk aesthetics and superhuman kung fu. Reeves starred as a hacker, Neo, who teamed with a band of freedom fighters led by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) after learning that the world was nothing more than a complex digital simulation created by robots who used the human race as batteries to sustain their global empire.

The Matrix worked on multiple levels. It posed interesting philosophical questions about the nature of reality. It looked amazing, thanks to its inventive, 360-degree camera work and razor-sharp action sequences. Reeves himself was perfectly cast as the slightly spacey, emotionally detached loner who morphed into a martial arts wunderkind. Take a look at our guide to watching the Matrix movies in order if you're planning a marathon.

Upcoming Keanu Reeves Movies and Projects

The most notable roles Keanu will be taking on in the future includes John Wick: Chapter 5 , which has been officially greenlit. There is also Constantine 2, which Warner Bros. has confirmed is still happening . He is also currently working on a BRZRKR anime series that has been confirmed for 2 season on Netflix.

Marty McFly and Doc Brown in Back to the Future testing out the time machine

Is there ever a bad time to watch a time travel movie? Some of the best sci-fi movies in history have tackled this frequently explored topic, and new wrinkles in the fabric of the concept have made the subject more exciting over time. So why don’t we take a look at the different rules these flights of fancy have introduced? Should you be stuck in a time loop, we apologize if this list is starting to get old.

Christopher Lloyd's Doc Brown and Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly in Back to the Future

Back To The Future

Everyone loves to talk about how Back to the Future’s time travel works , but there’s one aspect we take for granted throughout the whole trilogy. Doc Brown ( Christopher Lloyd ) may have given Marty McFly ( Michael J. Fox ) the keys to travel through the past, present, and future; but you seriously need to consider the exact spot you’re traveling to. Otherwise, you might find yourself altering history in some intriguing ways. R.I.P. Twin Pines Mall.

Malcolm McDowell traveling through time in Time After Time.

Time After Time

A novel adventure starring the father of time travel H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell), Time After Time actually introduced an interesting mechanic to temporal transport. Let’s just say that if you don’t use the Time Machine properly, you could find yourself stuck in your final destination. Or worse, falling through the time-space continuum, without a way back home.

A scared Linda Hamilton driving with an angry MIchael Biehn in The Terminator.

The Terminator

The Terminator's time travel will forever be a head-scratcher, as the existence of John Connor is the ultimate ontological paradox. How else can you explain Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) being sent back to the 1980s to save the world…and make sure the person who sent him is born in the first place?

William Shatner smiles while talking to Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

The oldest method of time travel in the Star Trek movies, 1986’s The Voyage Home saw Captain Kirk ( William Shatner ) and his crew trying to save the whales through a time heist. This wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the Enterprise crew using a Klingon Bird of Prey, a slingshot orbit around the sun, and a lot of engineering power to do it.

David Sullivan and Shane Carruth in Primer

2004’s Primer is still hotly discussed among time travel aficionados, and it’s not hard to see why. The shenanigans in this test case involve multiple versions of a singular traveler (Shane Carruth) existing in a single timeline, which creates one of the most chaotic timelines ever depicted.

Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, and Walker Scobell walking together in The Adam Project.

The Adam Project

Story-wise, The Adam Project is pretty cozy when it comes to how it handles time travel. But when it comes to traveling in style, the older Adam Reed ( Ryan Reynolds ) has a Time Jet that’s specifically coded to his DNA! Not many temporal travelers HAVE that, and it prevents so many mistakes other adventures of this sort use for story purposes.

Robert Downey Jr listens as Chris Evans gives a briefing in Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame

How Avengers: Endgame’s time travel works is rather unorthodox, to be honest. Instead of overwriting the past into a more pleasing result, the MCU’s finest are only allowed to use it in the name of stealing/returning the Infinity Stones. Timelines can still create tangent histories, and 2014 Gamora takes over for her slain variant in the films, but you can’t stop “The Snap.”

Jared Harris speaks urgently to William Hurt in Lost In Space.

Lost In Space

If all time travelers had the device Older Will Robinson (Jared Harris) built in 1998’s Lost in Space , they’d have it made. While only one person can travel at a time, exact coordinates in time and space are required; so you can go to a very specific spatial location on the timeline.

Ashton Kutcher in The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect's time travel works on rules similar to that of Quantum Leap . Evan ( Ashton Kutcher ) can indeed change history, but it’s only within his own life’s timeline. Unfortunately, thanks to the multiple trips leading to continued alterations to the fabric of events, it all adds up in terms of severe physical wear and tear.

Brook Bennett, Jake Rose, Aliu Oyofo, and Clark Duke look at their reflections in Hot Tub Time Machine.

Hot Tub Time Machine

Hot Tub Time Machine is a very special case when it comes to time travel. To be fair, the comedy ensemble franchise gets points for having its protagonists travel only within their own bodies. As for how one can actually travel with said titular device, apparently you need an energy drink, the right hot tub with the right temperature, and some convenient writing.

Paul Dano and Joseph Gordon Levitt cruising by in a red car in Looper.

Real-time bodily damage. That’s probably one of the most unique additions to Looper’s usage of time travel , as we see people incur damage in the past, only for it to show up on their future selves. Poor Seth ( Paul Dano ) demonstrated that lesson the hard way in Rian Johnson ’s sci-fi masterpiece.

Malcolm McDowell stands flanked by Patrick Stewart and William Shatner in Star Trek: Generations.

Star Trek: Generations

What if you could wish really hard to create an alternate timeline? Or what if you could send yourself back to your best memory, and never leave? That’s what The Nexus from Star Trek: Generations could do, and both Captains Kirk (William Shatner) and Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) got a taste of that sweet life, before ultimately using their new power to stop the villainous Dr. Soren (Malcolm McDowell).

Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves smiling together in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Bill And Ted’s Excellent Adventure

If you ever want to bring a figure from history home for dinner in the present, do it in the universe of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure . There are little to no consequences, especially when it comes to our heroes (Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves) whisking away two medieval princesses to become betrothed in the 1980s. Seriously, how did that not start a war?

Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana talk while standing in front of a window in The Time Traveller's Wife.

The Time Traveler's Wife

“Chrono Impairment” is a seriously rare affliction, but it’s enough of a headache that it prevents Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana’s clock-crossed lovers from ever enjoying a normal life. Such is the nature of The Time Traveler's Wife , which invented that affliction to send Bana’s character Henry on unpredictable trips at unforeseeable intervals throughout his life.

Harrison Ford and Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Indiana Jones And Dial Of Destiny

For Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's time travel to actually happen, the world of Harrison Ford’s iconic archeologist needed specific hardware. Aided by some very precise calculations to try and take the Nazis to where they were trying to go, it wasn't as simple as jumping into a car and gunning it to 88 miles per hour.

Jonathan Frakes and Patrick Stewart look ahead with concern in Star Trek: First Contact.

Star Trek: First Contact

For a franchise that uses temporal transit as much as the Star Trek series does, there sure are a lot of different ways to go back in time. And if you’re not satisfied with The Voyage Home’s method of a slingshot orbit around the Sun, then you can always do what Star Trek: First Contact did. While I wouldn’t personally recommend waiting for a Borg invasion to cause a temporal wake you can just hitch a ride on; you do you.

John David Washington

Ok, so technically Tenet’s shenanigans involving time is “time inversion,” rather than time travel. Which only makes the journey, and the resulting reality The Protagonist (John David Washington) lives in all the more complicated. It also makes for some classic Christopher Nolan mind melts.

Paul Walker with a painful expression in Timeline.

Would this really be a sci-fi party if author Michael Crichton didn’t show up? Timeline’s time travel is a lot of fun, if you consider using a “human fax machine” to send yourself to medieval times “fun.” In which case, try not to abuse it too much, as every trip has the chance to leave you with transcription errors in your reassembled DNA. Again, we’re working with a fax machine here.

Christopher Reeve stands surprised while dressed in period garb in Somewhere In Time.

Somewhere In Time

It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for Christopher Reeve fans! Somewhere in Time just had to be on this list, as it's pretty unique in how it sends a person back through the ages. In the case of Reeve’s playwright Richard, all he needs is a really powerful hypnotic focus to zoom back to 1912.

Chris Pine sits on the bridge with a determined expression in Star Trek.

Star Trek (2009)

It’s kind of fitting that the 2009 Star Trek reboot would use time travel, given that the series has continually danced with that concept on TV and in movies. For this J.J. Abrams-directed venture, the destructive and inexact force of a black hole is what’s used to accidentally alter time so vastly that William Shatner turns into Chris Pine.

Denzel Washington smiles while sitting in a lab in Déjà Vu.

Déjà Vu

Tony Scott’s 2006 action-thriller Déjà Vu is a big movie with a relatively limited scope. With intelligence gathering, and ultimately one human transport, that can only go as far back as four and a half days, Denzel Washington’s work was kind of cut out for him on this caper.

Chris Pratt sits with a look of concern in The Tomorrow War.

The Tomorrow War

The Chris Pratt-starring time travel ensemble adventure The Tomorrow War has some pretty huge stipulations when it comes to recruiting an army for the future. The largest among them was, of course, you had to be dead according to the records of the future hellscape that pitted humanity against some very nasty creatures.

Hugh Jackman in X-Men: Days of Future Past

X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Going from here to there in the then and now in X-Men: Days of Future Past requires a serious amount of power. With Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) going back to his past body, the key to how it all happens lies in the phasing abilities of Kitty Pryde (Elliot Page). So this story uses a very physical, and incredibly vulnerable, method to execute its vision.

Bruce Willis in 12 Monkeys

Out of all the time travel universes we’ve seen on screen, perhaps the one I feel the most sorry for is the one shown in 12 Monkeys . The basic rule of this Bruce Willis epic’s temporal transit is “hope for the best,” thanks to the method of being shot through time and intending to land in the right place going wrong more often than you think.

Owen Wilson looks ahead with horror in Midnight In Paris.

Midnight In Paris

Reminiscent of many other vehicular-based time travel films like Back to the Future , any character that travels through time in Midnight In Paris just needs to catch the right ride, at just about Midnight. The experience is bespoke to whoever is traveling, as the period of time that suits them best also dictates the method of transportation provided.

Kirk Douglas in The Final Countdown

The Final Countdown

Dropping an aircraft carrier from the 1980s into the moments before Pearl Harbor, The Final Countdown delivers a moral dilemma plenty of time travelers have tangled with. But the real difference with this underrated sci-fi movie is the fact that the time-traveling storm that is responsible for the trip is inescapable. You’re going home, whether you want to or not.

Domhnall Gleeson and Bill Nighy in About Time

Sharing a similarity with the romantic classic Somewhere In Time , Richard Curtis’ About Time allows any potential traveler to jump into the past with merely intense concentration. However, certain caveats are in play, like the recommendation of not traveling past certain life milestones, or the fact that only the men of the Lake family can actually use this gift.

Jake Gyllenhaal in Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko

Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) can’t exactly travel through time in Donnie Darko , but he does have a special temporal ability that’s kind of funny and kind of sad. With the ability to open a wormhole between the present and the past, Mr. Darko can send objects through time; the skill that gives Richard Kelly’s movie its bittersweet ending.

Hugh Jackman and Meg Ryan and Kate & Leopold

Kate & Leopold

Kate & Leopold’s usage of a localized time portal is a method as old as time. However, the big difference with this Meg Ryan/Hugh Jackman rom-com is that the journey Leopold (Jackman) takes to the “future” of 2001 robs us all of elevators. Also, there’s a ticking clock on this specific portal’s usage, which only complicates things further.

Andie MacDowell and Bill Murray in Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day

Perhaps the movie that nailed the time loop into the consciousness of the world, Groundhog Day brought us a charming Bill Murray rom-com mixed with a time travel story. Its misanthropic lead needed to change, even as the world around him stayed the same. The rest was sci-fi history in the making.

Jessica Rothe in Happy Death Day

Happy Death Day

What happens if you make a Groundhog Day-style time loop into a deadly game? You get a movie like Happy Death Day , in which our initially unlikable lead Tree (Jessica Rothe) is being stalked through a single-day time loop. The big kicker in this variant is that, unlike your standard time loop, Tree has a finite number of cycles before she possibly dies for good.

Josh Hutcherson wearing retro futuristic sunglasses in Detention.

Where does one start with director Joseph Kahn’s Detention? Well, how about the fact that the teenagers in play (including a pre- Hunger Games Josh Hutcherson) use a stuffed bear as a time travel capsule? Or the fact that a mother/daughter pair can body swap on a permanent basis, and with no consequences?

And with that, our supreme sampling of time travel trips has come to a close. Which more than likely has left you with a want to watch some of these movies again, or for the first time. That's totally natural, because this is a subgenre that always leaves us with one question: is there ever a bad time to watch a time travel movie?

"The Lake House" tells the story of a romance that spans years but involves only a few kisses. It succeeds despite being based on two paradoxes: time travel, and the ability of two people to have conversations that are, under the terms established by the film, impossible. Neither one of these problems bothered me in the slightest. Take time travel: I used to get distracted by its logical flaws and contradictory time lines. Now in my wisdom I have decided to simply accept it as a premise, no questions asked. A time travel story works on emotional, not temporal, logic.

In "The Lake House," it works like this. A woman ( Sandra Bullock ) lives in a glass house built on stilts over a lake north of Chicago. She is moving out and leaves a note for the next tenant ( Keanu Reeves ). He reads the note and sends a strange response to the address she supplies: He thinks she has the wrong house, because "no one has lived in this house for years." She writes back to disagree. It develops that he thinks it is 2004 and she thinks it is 2006, and perhaps she moved in after he left, instead of moving out before he arrived, although that wouldn't fit with -- but never mind.

This correspondence continues. They both leave their letters in the mailbox beside the sidewalk that leads to the bridge that leads to the glass house. The mailbox eventually gets into the act by raising and lowering its own little red flag. The two people come to love each other, and this process involves the movie's second impossibility. We hear them having voice-over conversations that are ostensibly based on the words in their letters, but unless these letters are one sentence long and are exchanged instantaneously (which would mean crossing time travel crossed with chat rooms), they could not possibly be conversational.

Never mind. They also have the same dog. Never mind, I tell you, never mind! I think, actually, that I have the answer to how the same dog could belong to two people separated by two years, but if I told you, I would have to shoot the dog. The key element in "The Lake House" that gives it more than a rueful sense of loss is that although Alex's letters originate in 2004 and Kate's in 2006, he is after all still alive in 2006, and what is more, she after all was alive in 2004. Is there a way for them to send letters across the gap that will allow them to meet where she was in 2004, or she where will be in 2006, or vice-versa? It is, although it involves many paradoxes, including the one that in 2004 all of this is ahead of both of them, and in 2006 Alex knows everything but Kate either knows nothing, or knows it too late to act on it. None of this prevents her letter of romantic anguish: That was you that I met!

Enough of the plot and its paradoxes. What I respond to in the movie is its fundamental romantic impulse. It makes us hope these two people will somehow meet. All during the movie, we're trying to do the math: It should be possible, given enough ingenuity, for them to eventually spend 2007 together, especially since he can theoretically keep the letters he received from her in 2004 and ask her out on a date and show them to her, although by then she'd know she wrote them -- or would she?

They do arrange one date, which involves them in some kind of time-loop misunderstanding, I think. She later understands what happened, but I don't think I do. I mean, I understand the event she refers to, but not whether it is a necessary event or can be prevented.

A great deal depends on the personalities involved. Sandra Bullock is an enormously likable actor in the right role, and so is Keanu Reeves, although here they're both required to be marginally depressed because of events in their current (but not simultaneous) lives. Many of his problems circle around his father, Louis Wyler ( Christopher Plummer ), a famous Chicago architect. The old man is an egocentric genius who designed the Lake House, which his son dislikes because, like Louis himself, it lives in isolation; there aren't even any stairs to get down to the water.

Alex is an architect himself, currently debasing himself with suburban condos, and Kate is a doctor whose confidante is an older mentor at the hospital ( Shoreh Aghdashloo ). Alex has a confidant, too, his brother Henry ( Ebon Moss-Bachrach ). A plot like this makes confidants more or less obligatory, since the protagonists have so little opportunity to confide in each other, except for their mysterious ability to transform a written correspondence into a conversation. Now about that dog: Dogs live outside of time, don't you think?

An ode to Keanu Reeves in time travel romance The Lake House

The Lake House

Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures

Like a fine wine or top-shelf whiskey, Keanu Reeves is getting better with age. Not only did John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum unseat box office juggernaut Avengers: Endgame , but a fourth movie in the series has just been announced . The sharp suit-wearing badass isn’t Reeves’ only project in the coming weeks; he is also the voice of the handlebar mustache-wearing Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4 and a thigh-appreciating love interest in the Netflix rom-com Always Be My Maybe . Next year he will be back as Ted “Theodore” Logan in the highly anticipated Bill and Ted sequel . Everything is coming up Keanu.

The so-called Keanussance covers multiple genres, but Reeves has always picked a diverse range of projects appealing to a variety of tastes . In a career that has spanned over 30 years, this versatility is part of his charm. Yeah, he can kick ass as John Wick or Neo, but he can also play a romantic lead. With this in mind, let’s go back to 2006 when Reeves reunited with Speed co-star Sandra Bullock for a movie that swapped out a bomb as the central plot device for a mailbox with time travel abilities. The only thing that might explode in The Lake House is emotions.

Computers exist, but this might as well be set in the '80s as Alex and Kate never think to look each other up or even email each other, because where is the romance in that? If this movie was made in 2019 there is no way they could avoid each other on social media (now I want to see that version of this film). Instead, they write their feelings down, bouncing ideas off each other and revealing their deepest truths as if they are one another's journal and/or therapist — except they are definitely horny for each other, too.

Two years separate the architect and the doctor — the quintessential careers of characters in a romance — but they manage to interact beyond letter writing as 90 minutes of scribbling would make for a dull viewing experience. Obviously, Alex is the guy to root for — he's played by Keanu after all — but he delivers a number of big gestures to ensure the audience knows he is The One. When Kate laments that her city apartment lacks the beautiful foliage, which surrounds the lake house, Alex brings the trees to her.

The Lake House

At this midway point, there is a power imbalance, because even though Kate has two years advantage, the Kate in his timeline is in the dark. He knows so much about her and he uses it to his advantage. He doesn't go full creep, but their first kiss is not as romantic as the movie probably thinks it is. Thankfully, the power dynamic shifts to a level playing field later in the film and Alex holds back.

The Lake House

The titular lake house with a tree growing through its middle gets a backstory — it is part of why Alex and his dad have a terrible relationship — but there is never an explanation behind the magical mailbox. It is not imbued with mystical power a la Outlander and it isn’t a hereditary gift similar to Domhnall Gleeson's experience in About Time .

The Lake House

Alex might not have the fighting prowess of John Wick, but he does share his love for canines. In addition to their letters, Kate and Alex also share a dog named Jack. Jack plays an important role, but thankfully there is no John Wick -level of animal peril.

The Lake House

Logic doesn’t matter in time travel romance, but who cares about rules when Keanu Reeves is given the opportunity to flex his romantic side?

Keanu Reeves fractured kneecap after he 'tripped over a rug' on set but kept filming movie: 'Such a trouper'

Keanu Reeves stylist Jeanne Yang reveals what it's like working with the "John Wick" star and what he looks for in a red carpet look.

Keanu Reeves' co-star Aziz Ansari revealed that the "Matrix" actor fractured his kneecap during the filming of their new movie "Good Fortune."

On Wednesday, Ansari, 41, who also wrote and directed "Good Fortune," recalled that Reeves, 59, had suffered the injury after an accident in his trailer.

"About, I don't know, 15 days into shooting with me, I was like, 'Hey, just go chill in your dressing room for 15 minutes.' And he tripped on a rug. He's like, 'Aah, my knee,'" Ansari said during an appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to People magazine.

Ansari praised Reeves for continuing to film all of his scenes after his injury, telling the CinemaCon audience that the actor was "such a trouper."

"He still filmed everything except some scenes where he needed him to do salsa dancing, which we need to pick up," added Ansari.

"He was like, 'I'll do it!' We're like, 'Keanu, calm down. We'll do the salsa dancing once your knee's healed,'" Ansari recalled.

Ansari noted that despite performing challenging stunts for some of his most famous action roles, Reeves had never had "to go to the hospital or anything."

"He's done those ‘Wick’ movies, all the ‘Matrix’ stuff. In ‘Speed,’ he actually did attempt to do the jump from the car to the bus. It wasn't the take they used, but he did do it," Ansari said.

In addition to Reeves and Ansari, "Good Fortune" stars Seth Rogen, Sandra Oh and Keke Palmer. The comedy follows a down-on-his-luck gig worker (Ansari) who meets his guardian angel Gabriel (Reeves) in a Denny's parking lot, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Gabriel helps Ansari's character swap lives with his wealthy employer Jeff (Rogen) in an effort to show him that money can't buy happiness. The plan goes awry when Ansari's character decides he loves Jeff's life, and Gabriel loses his wings as a result of the failed experiment.

In January, photos of Reeves using crutches on the set of "Good Fortune" sparked speculation on social media. In the images, Reeves was also seen with bandages and an ice pack on his knee.

During his CinemaCon appearance, Ansari pointed out that the hashtag #GetWellSoonKeanu had started trending on social media after the photos of Reeves surfaced.

"He actually is an angel," the "Parks and Recreation" star said of Reeves, according to THR. "He’s been pretending to be human for all these other roles."

CinemaCon, which was held at Caesars Palace from April 8 to 11, is an annual convention for movie theater owners to view upcoming films during presentations hosted by stars and studios.

"Good Fortune" is the first directorial outing for Ansari, who created and starred in the Netflix series "Master of None." Lionsgate’s motion picture group chair Adam Fogelson, who appeared alongside Ansari at the studio's CinemaCon presentation, praised the two-time Emmy Award winner as a "talented and intelligent multi-hyphenate."

"This movie is entirely unique," Fogelson told the audience, via THR. However, he noted that the film will likely remind theater-goers of classic life-swapping movies such as the 1983 comedy "Trading Places," which starred Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd.

Lionsgate announced the project in April 2023, but details about "Good Fortune's" plot were kept under wraps until the first footage was presented at CinemaCon.

At the time of the announcement, former Lionsgate motion picture group chair Joe Drake told Deadline, "We have indeed found good fortune with this film."

"We love the script and believe strongly in Aziz as both a performer and a director," he continued. "And when you add in Seth and Keanu – two incredible world-class talents — toplining alongside Aziz, this has the potential to be a very special film for us."

Fact Check: About the Rumor That Keanu Reeves Is Starring in 'Point Break Johnny Utah,' a Sequel to 1991's 'Point Break'

Keanu Reeves will star in "Point Break Johnny Utah," a sequel to 1991's "Point Break."

Labeled Satire ( About this rating? )

On March 30, 2024, a Facebook post claimed that actor Keanu Reeves was reprising his role as FBI Agent Johnny Utah in a new movie sequel as part of the Point Break cinematic universe, set for release September 2024.

The Facebook announcement from the account YODA BBY ABY  also included a movie poster. According to the post:

"In 'Point Break Johnny Utah,' the adrenaline-fueled saga continues as retired FBI agent John Utah finds himself thrust back into the heart-pounding world of high-stakes bank robberies when a heist unfolds right before his eyes. Torn between his peaceful new life and the call of duty, Utah is pulled back into the fray as a specialist, navigating a deadly game of cat and mouse with a new breed of surf-loving thieves. Catch the wave of suspense this September 2024, as Utah rides again in an epic showdown that blurs the lines between justice and passion."

(YODA BBY ABY/Facebook)

The Facebook post received 1,200 comments and 2,600 shares at the time of writing, with all commenters demonstrating their excitement at the prospect of another film featuring Reeves' beloved character from the 1991 action film. "One of my favorite actors love all his movies point break one of my favorite can't wait," wrote one person, while another responded, "Omg! I must see this one! Point Break is one of my favourite films! Luv Keanu Reeves!"

The news, however, proved fictional and little more than a satirical sequel hoax. There is no reputable source confirming that a sequel to "Point Break" is in the works, and the movie poster appears to be fake. The YODA BBY ABY  Facebook page is dedicated to writing satirical posts, with the page's intro section asserting, "I'm just here to eat frogs, lift rocks and be satirical. The page is 100% satire and fake news."

A look at Reeves' IMDb page confirmed that, while the actor does have five upcoming movies in various stages of production as of this writing — including a sequel to his 2005 supernatural horror movie "Constantine" and another John Wick thriller titled "Ballerina" — there is no new "Point Break" sequel on the horizon.

We reached out to Reeves' team, who did not immediately return a request for comment.

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, "Point Break," which also starred Patrick Swayze as Johnny Utah's adversary (a surfing, skydiving bank robber named Bodhi), is a beloved cult classic that still gets written about , more than 30 years after it was released to cinemas.

In 2015, "Point Break" was remade, although that film was not well received by fans of the original, nor did it perform well at the box office . The remake starred Australian actor Luke Bracey in the role of FBI Agent Johnny Utah, with Venezuelan actor Édgar Ramírez playing Swayze's Bodhi.

Although the main characters from the 1991 movie were recast with younger performers for the 2015 remake, two actors who played villains in the original film were recast as lawmen. Actors James LeGros and BoJesse Christopher, who were part of Swayze's Ex-President bank-robbing gang from the original movie, played FBI bigwigs in the new version.

Snopes has previously reported on satire involving Keanu Reeves , as well as a news story about the actor having been babysat by Alice Cooper when he was a child.

‘The Greatest Hits’: Save your time

A time-travel romance falls victim to generic characters and clunky dialogue.

You know how a pop song from a moment in your past can bring that moment back to life in colors, smells, memories and emotions? “The Greatest Hits” takes that idea and literalizes it right into the ground.

The film is one of those romantic fantasies that enlists time travel as the primary obstacle keeping two people from getting together. Make that one of the obstacles; the others in “The Greatest Hits” are the heroine’s growing collection of vinyl records and her habit of wearing noise-canceling headphones wherever she goes. The course of true love never did run smooth.

Harriet (Lucy Boynton) is mourning the loss of her boyfriend Max (David Corenswet) in a car crash that also delivered a bonk to her noggin that allows her to whoosh back in time — but only when she hears a song that triggers a moment the couple had together. Thus the headphones; otherwise, the tunes streaming from supermarket speakers and other people’s car radios would have her constantly yo-yoing back and forth between then and now. The records she’s obsessively collecting are an effort to find the one song that might give her a chance to alter events and keep Max alive.

Does any of this make sense? Of course not. Time-travel romantic fantasy movies never make sense, and when they’re done right, that’s the source of their idiot charm. 2006’s “The Lake House,” which involves Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock and a magic mailbox, is a personal gold standard in this regard.

Complicating matters is that Harriet has met a cute guy at a grief counseling support group — that sentence alone announces we’re in Los Angeles — and is hesitant to open up and tell him about the whole trying-to-change-the-flow-of-history thing. David, who has lost both parents to either separate illnesses or just plain carelessness, is played by Justin H. Min, a likable actor who was the sensitive android of the little-seen “After Yang” (2022), a movie that you would be strongly advised to watch instead of this one.

What would it take to make “The Greatest Hits” work? For one thing, a music-rights budget that allowed for songs an average filmgoer might recognize, rather than tracks from the back 40 of Spotify or a disco remix of Roxy Music’s “To Turn You On.” For another, a script that avoids dialogue clunkers like “There’s a reason that in some languages, the word for love and the word for suffering is the same.” (I Googled it — didn’t find any.) Shopworn supporting stereotypes like the heroine’s sassy gay Black friend (Austin Crute) don’t help.

The prime offender, though, is writer-director Ned Benson’s inability to create three-dimensional characters, or even believable two-dimensional ones. Harriet is apparently a record producer, but we only know that from one dated reference to Alan Parsons and a brief scene of her telling singer Nelly Furtado to “add a little more compression on the drums”; otherwise, she’s an attractive blank space that Boynton strains too hard to fill in. The dead boyfriend, Max, is even more generic — a genial himbo with all the flavor of a catalogue model.

Benson made a stir with his debut, a three-film project called “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” (2014) that looked at a relationship from his, her and their points of view. His belated follow-up, by contrast, has barely enough personality for one. But he gets points for including the dreadful Kars4Kids jingle as one of the audio jogs that sends Harriet tumbling back in time — for a brief moment, the rest of “The Greatest Hits” seems much less irritating in comparison.

PG-13. Streaming on Hulu. Drug use, strong language and suggestive material. 94 minutes.

Keanu Reeves Fractured His Kneecap After He 'Tripped on a Rug' in His Trailer on Good Fortune Set, Says Aziz Ansari

"He still filmed everything except some scenes," shared Ansari of his "trooper" costar at CinemaCon 2024

Aziz Ansari  has finally solved the mystery behind Keanu Reeves ' need for crutches in late January .

While speaking at CinemaCon 2024 in Las Vegas on Wednesday, April 10, Ansari, 41, revealed that his fellow actor, 59, fractured his kneecap in his trailer on the set of Good Fortune.

"About, I don't know, 15 days into shooting with me, I was like, 'Hey, just go chill in your dressing room for 15 minutes.' And he tripped on a rug. He's like, 'Aah, my knee,' " Ansari said.

Reeves and Ansari, who also wrote and directed the upcoming film, star alongside Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer .

The multi-hyphenate said that Reeves was "such a trooper" following the injury, noting that "he still filmed everything except some scenes where he needed him to do salsa dancing, which we need to pick up."

"He was like, 'I'll do it!' We're like, 'Keanu, calm down. We'll do the salsa dancing once your knee's healed,' " said Ansari.

He noted that Reeves has done extreme stunts without ever needing "to go to the hospital or anything."

"He's done those Wick movies, all the Matrix stuff. In Speed , he actually did attempt to do the jump from the car to the bus. It wasn't the take they used, but he did do it," Ansari said.

When the project was first announced in April 2023, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake said in a  statement to Deadline that they "moved quickly to land this project once it was available.”

"We have indeed found good fortune with this film," said Drake. "We love the script and believe strongly in Aziz as both a performer and a director. And when you add in Seth and Keanu – two incredible world-class talents — toplining alongside Aziz, this has the potential to be a very special film for us."

Reeves will show off a different set of skills with the release of his upcoming novel The Book of Elsewhere , inspired by his BRZRKR comic book series.

"The series tells the story of an immortal warrior's fight through the ages, and I love the world of  BRZRKR  so much that I wanted to explore it further, and I thought one of the best ways to do that is through a novel," said Reeves in a January conversation with Good Morning America .

Keanu Reeves Allegedly Ready To Marry Alexandra Grant, Refuses To Sign Prenup As He 'Trusts' Her

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Hollywood star Keanu Reeves is reportedly "madly in love" with his partner, Alexandra Grant , and is ready to walk down the aisle.

The actor is said to be "confident" that their romance will "go the distance" and allegedly has no interest in signing a prenup.

Following months of speculation, Grant and Reeves confirmed they were an item in 2019 after attending an event together.

Keanu Reeves Is 'Madly In Love' With Alexandra Grant And Ready To Walk Down The Aisle

According to a report, the "John Wick" star is anxious to get hitched to the American visual artist, and the couple might even "elope."

"Keanu is madly in love with Alexandra and he's ready to bite the bullet and go through with a wedding," an insider told the National Enquirer (per Radar Online ).

The insider further noted that Reeves would likely have a low-key wedding ceremony as it is not his style to be grand and flashy.

"It won't be some big splashy affair because that's just not his style," the source added. "More likely it'll be a simple ceremony with a handful of guests in the backyard at their home in L.A. Or maybe they'll elope and then have a small celebration with their friends afterward."

Keanu Reeves Allegedly Won't Sign A Prenup As He 'Trusts' Alexandra Grant

The movie star has reportedly not made this strong a connection with anyone besides Grant in over twenty years.

Reeves has also allegedly had reservations about marriage since the death of his pregnant fiancée, Jennifer Syme, in a car crash in 2001. However, since Grant came into the picture, Reeves now sees things differently.

According to the news outlet, the actor is not interested in getting a prenup as he "trusts Alexandra completely and doesn't see any point in getting hung up with lawyers and paperwork."

The pair have known each other since 2009, when they both worked on "Ode to Happiness," a book written by Reeves and illustrated by Grant. Ten years later, they made their red carpet debut as a couple.

A source said, "[Reeves] doesn't have a shred of doubt that what they have is the real deal and he's confident it will go the distance. He knows she's got the best intentions and he doesn't want to make her sign some paper just to protect his pile of money."

They added, "It's kind of crazy when you consider how much he's worth. But he's an old-fashioned guy who believes love is forever."

Alexandra Grant Calls Their Relationship 'Interdependent And Independent'

Last year, Grant looked stunning while attending the Los Angeles Beverly Arts Icon Awards solo. When asked by People magazine  about navigating red carpets alone, the accomplished visual artist offered a thoughtful response.

She said, "The good news about falling in love as an adult is that I had built my own career by the time that my relationship had begun."

Grant added, "I feel very confident in the relationship on the red carpet. I feel confident on it alone."

She described her relationship with the "The Matrix" star as "interdependent and independent in the best ways."

Alexandra Grant Says Keanu Reeves Is 'So Creative' And 'So Kind'

During her conversation with the news outlet, Grant showered Reeves with kind words, called him a "creative," and told a brief story to explain how they navigate each other's professional environments.

Grant said, "In a moment of frustration in my life, I once said, 'Sometimes I feel like a Maserati stuck in traffic,' that I have this big engine, but, for a variety of reasons, that I couldn't ever go. And I know a lot of people feel frustrated in their lives that they're not able to run their engine."

The visual artist noted that she and Reeves inspire each other to find new paths and solutions. She stated, "Seeing the other person's problem-solving is inspiring, like, 'Oh, well, okay, this one, that's a cul-de-sac. How do I try this other thing?' "

She called Reeves an "inspiration," adding, "he's so creative, he's so kind. He works so hard."

The Actor Loves Spending Time With Alexandra Grant

During an interview with People last year , Reeves answered several questions, including one about his last blissful moment.

The "John Wick" star said, "A couple of days ago with my honey. We were in bed. We were connected. We were smiling and laughing and giggling. Feeling great. It was just really nice to be together."

Reeves also answered the question about the last time he danced. He said, "At a friend's wedding about eight months ago. Sometimes, I'm the first out there; sometimes, I need coaxing. Sometimes, it's the song, and sometimes, it's the person. I go with the feeling."

Will Keanu Reeves Be In The New ‘Matrix’ Movie?

Nina Braca

Keanu Reeves loves to return to a franchise year after year, as he did with Bill and Ted and John Wick , but one of his most famous roles has to be Neo from 1999’s The Matrix. That’s when Reeves went from stoner musician to action star.

After 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections, it seemed like we were done with Neo & co for good, but Warner Bros has other plans. The studio announced that Drew Goddard has been chosen to write and direct the next phase of the Matrix-verse.

Goddard is known for penning Daredevil for Netflix and writing and directing Bad Times at the El Royale, as well as the cult favorite horror movie Cabin in The Woods. The writer/ director was approached by Warner Bros. to keep the Matrix World running. “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman said in a statement. “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making his new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.” Lana Wachowski will act as an executive producer on the new installment. But will Reeves return?

It’s not clear if Reeves will return for the installment, though he would likely get a hefty payday if he chooses to throw on that iconic leather duster once again. Reeves reunited with Carrie-Anne Moss for the 2021 installment which also featured Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jonathan Groff.

In 2021, Reeves said he would only return if Lana was on board. “If she invites me again, I’m in,” he said . Since Wachowski is attached to produce there might be a chance of Neo’s return. But the response to The Matrix Resurrections was so muted that maybe he’ll just stick to John Wick cameos for now.
