11 Relaxing Hotels With In-Room Spas
Posted: November 13, 2023 | Last updated: November 13, 2023
As travelers increasingly seek wellness on their trips, hotels continue to elevate their spa facilities to offer everything from immersive storm rooms to contrast bathing (where guests alternate between hot and cold water). But few hotels offer the opportunity to experience a spa in private. “Being naked is the point,” Brett van Sickle says bluntly on the inspiration behind building a hammam and steam room in each of the bedrooms at his wellness boutique inn, the High Acre . “Being able to feel the sweat and steam on your body is so therapeutic.”
Rather than rub sweaty elbows with strangers in a shared sauna, having in-room spa facilities enables guests to turn their attention inward. Instead of carving out an hour or two to visit the spa, having in-room spa facilities provides unlimited opportunities for self-care each day, transforming the typical hotel stay into a private wellness retreat. Below, AD surveys 11 hotels with in-room spas that offer unparalleled privacy—and striking design—in the pursuit of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Renaissance honolulu hotel & spa fills luxury niche in kapiolani-ala moana area.

The Renaissance Honolulu Hotel &Spa, across from Ala Moana Center, opens today after a $505 million from-the-ground-up investment that is expected to enliven the district and fill gaps in Oahu’s hotel market, which is mainly located in resorts.
The 39-story tower at 1390 Kapiolani Blvd. includes 187 hotel rooms and suites and 112 individually owned hotel residences. The hotel, developed and owned by JL Capital, is managed by Highgate under a Marriott franchise. The property, which shares an amenity deck with the 390-unit Sky Ala Moana residential tower, comes with many firsts.
Tim Lee, CEO of JL Capital, said it’s Oahu’s first full-service hotel built from the ground up since the Prince Waikiki in 1990.
Lee said new hotels are incredibly difficult to build in Hawaii. This one was made possible because transit-oriented development resulted in up-zoned Kapiolani Boulevard parcels to allow hotels. He said having residential units in the Renaissance Residences program as well as the fully residential Sky Ala Moana also “helped with the capital stack.”
He said market rate units in the Sky Ala Moana sold out two years prior to completion, and buyers closed in October.
Matt Grauso, general manager of the Renaissance Honolulu Hotel &Spa and the Renaissance Residences Honolulu, said the Renaissance Residences Honolulu, which sold for about $2,500 a square foot, also sold out quickly.
Grauso said the property is getting lots of attention as it is the “first Renaissance Residences property in the world, and it’s also the first Renaissance hybrid with a hotel and a Renaissance Residences.”
Opening of the new hotel also returns the Renaissance brand to Hawaii. Marriott previously had a presence in Hawaii with its Renaissance brand in Wailea on Maui and at the Ilikai in Waikiki, but changes to those properties led to other operators taking over.
Kelly Sanders, president of Highgate Hawaii, said the property’s location also “fills a big hole in the market.”
Currently, the only other traditional hotels in the Kapiolani and Ala Moana corridor are the two-star Pagoda Hotel on Rycroft Street where online prices for March were advertised as starting at $169 a night or the three-star Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra on Atkinson Drive, where prices started at $209.
Rates at Renaissance Honolulu Hotel &Spa begin at about $350 per night; however, can reach $3,000 or so for a luxury two-bedroom penthouse.
JL Capital, Marriott and Highgate have worked to build in extras that add value.
Lee said the shared amenity deck helped keep development costs down while allowing for the construction of a more luxurious and vast outdoor Sky Deck.
“We can over-program a bit there and offer a lot more than what most residential towers or even hotels can do,” he said.
Sanders said he thinks the hotel is the first in Hawaii with a hot- and cold-plunge Japanese “ofuro” tub that is part of the complimentary amenity package for guests.
“Guests have to book and pay for treatments at Uhiwai Spa, but use of the ofuro and sauna is included in the room price,” he said. “We don’t charge resort fees, either.”
Sanders said a partnership with TableOne Hospitality, led by renowned restaurateur Patric Yumul, has allowed the hotel to offer a curated food and beverage program, which includes the April opening of MARA, a 6,700-square-foot Mediterranean restaurant, and more.
Some $1.25 million in artwork from Hiroshi Sugimoto graces the hotel’s lobby walls, and Sig Zane collaborated on design elements and even designed staff uniforms. Floor-to-ceiling windows in every room provide bird’s-eye views of nature’s art.
Sanders said there is already early evidence that the hotel and hotel residences have hit the sweet spot.
“Demand has been great. We started selling three months ago, and we’ve already surpassed Marriott’s opening goal from a revenue perspective,” he said.
Grauso said the Renaissance Residences Honolulu opened to owners in December, with the first official hotel guests arriving Friday.
“We are opening up with about 35% occupancy the first week, but it jumps to 78% the second week, so we are picking up quickly,” he said.
F. Kevin Aucello, founder and principal of Powell &Aucello, said he expects the project to succeed as it fills a gap in the market for an upscale hotel product for business travelers, conventioneers, those attending nearby events at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center and those who want to be near Kakaako, which has been enlivened by a growing residential population and plenty of new food and beverage and retail options.
“It will attract a lot of business clientele as it’s outside of Waikiki,” he said. “Experienced travelers who have been to Honolulu a lot will probably like it. Kakaako is growing with plenty of restaurant options, and it’s nice to be close to that area.”
He opined that there is room for more hotels in the Kakaako-to-downtown sector, which includes Kapiolani Boulevard and the Ala Moana region. However, Aucello said finding sites might be challenging, especially in Kakaako, where the Hawai‘i Community Development Authority has strict regulations.
He said construction costs are high and that getting construction financing from lenders is challenging.
“The economics can be tough, so the next one in that area would probably be a limited-service hotel,” Aucello said.

Read on to discover the best options for an all-inclusive resort-like experience in Hawaii.
Note: Packages and offerings are subject to change. Check resort websites for current offers.

According to Fora travel advisor Tiffany Kulkarni , Canyon Ranch Lenox serves as a tranquil oasis for those seeking R&R thanks to its "comprehensive approach to wellness, [which] includes everything from fitness classes to nutrition consultations." This all-inclusive wellness resort, a 2023 World's Best Award Winner , is nestled in the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts, where natural beauty abounds. Sun-drenched rooms and suites and glass-enclosed walking paths help bring the outdoors in. Miraval Arizona
Courtesy of Miraval Arizona
"My stay at Miraval Arizona was truly the most relaxed I have ever felt," says Fora travel advisor Nadia Bass . She continues, telling Travel + Leisure , "The staff at this property are exemplary; all of the guest services staff are friendly and helpful, and the practitioners are all experts in their field." This adults-only all-inclusive resort also offers dozens of incredible activities plus a desert-inspired spa with facilities — including a serenity pool, hot tub, saunas, steam room, and relaxation lounge — that are free to all guests. That said, it's certainly worth splurging on one of the regionally inspired treatments such as the prickly pear sugar scrub. Best of all, says Bass, "All meals, snacks, coffee, smoothies, and non-alcoholic beverages are included, and, let me tell you, the food is spectacular!"
Amangiri , which translates to "peaceful mountain" in Sanskrit, is best described by Fora travel advisor Elizabeth Kaczka as "a modern desert marvel, seamlessly integrated into the natural landscape." This 2023 World's Best Award-winning resort has attracted seclusion-seeking A-listers such as Kim Kardashian and Brad Pitt. Accommodations take the form of spectacular suites and pavilions, complete with white stone floors, concrete walls, Instagram-worthy desert views, fireplace-equipped outdoor lounges, and, in some cases, private pools or roof terraces. The 25,000-square-foot spa features a water pavilion with a steam room, sauna, and two pools, while the flotation pavilion offers its own relaxation area. All stays include breakfast, lunch, and dinner; guided group hikes; daily group wellness classes; and access to on-site hiking trails to explore at your own pace.
Red Mountain Resort
Courtesy of Red Mountain Resort
Spa lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and relaxation seekers alike need not look further than Red Mountain Resort , says Kulkarni. This one-of-a-kind wellness retreat near Zion National Park offers adventures such as hiking, biking, rappelling, and canyoneering, along with less strenuous activities like yoga and meditation. Alternatively, the travel advisor says those craving something more low-key can "just sit by the pool or go to the spa while enjoying the mountain scenery." Don't miss the signature treatments, including the Red Mountain Revitalizer (a full-body treatment that includes a prickly pear sugar scrub, full body massage, and warm Vichy shower) and the Adobe Lavender Hydrating Cocoon, which utilizes local red clay.
Douglas Friedman
According to Fora travel advisor Amna Ismail , " Mii Amo is an ideal destination to escape, rejuvenate, and immerse yourself in a tranquil natural environment." The acclaimed spa hotel — a 2023 It List recipient — is located in Sedona , best known for its energy vortexes, which have attracted soul-searching travelers for decades. The newly renovated resort works with guests to create highly personalized and unique experiences (known as "journeys"). These all-inclusive itineraries also feature complimentary consults, lectures, fitness classes, specialty programming, and a daily spa or Trail House credit, which can be used for outdoor activities like hiking and biking. Although Ismail described the health-conscious cuisine here as "out of this world," it's also worth noting that guests also have the option to dine at sister property Enchantment Resort .
The Lodge at Woodloch
Courtesy of The Lodge at Woodloch
This adults-only all-inclusive wellness resort in the Pocono Mountains recently took home a 2023 World's Best Award in the "Domestic Destination Spas" category — and it's easy to see why. The sprawling 40,000-square-foot spa is free for all resort guests, regardless of whether or not they book a treatment. Highlights include two relaxation rooms (one of which is silent), several pools (including an infinity-edge one overlooking the mountains), a snow room, and a Himalayan salt sauna. The property itself is situated on 500-plus wooded acres. After completing one of the dozens of activities, sit down for a gourmet meal before retreating to one of the 59 rooms and suites, which serve as tranquil sanctuaries with contemporary decor and private balconies.
Castle Hot Springs
Courtesy of Castle Hot Springs
Fora travel advisor Karen Hart calls this luxury all-inclusive resort "perfect for those seeking spa treatments, activity, nature, a mountainous setting, and farm-to-table dining." She continues, telling T+L that "Everything is balanced here, with activities and services that go well beyond just the woo-woo of green juices and intense yoga practices." This 2023 World's Best Award recipient is most famous for its eponymous mineral-rich hot springs, which guests can soak in. The travel pro also notes that each bungalow-style accommodation — outfitted with outdoor decks, fireplaces, and bespoke stone tubs — offers an ideal sense of seclusion. That said, she's quick to note that "community and socializing are also part of the stay in the dining areas, the bar, the outdoor fire pits, and main buildings."
Inns of Aurora
Courtesy of Inns of Aurora
The Inns of Aurora was crowned among the best New York State resorts in 2022 and 2023 . The Finger Lakes property is unique in that it's comprised of five individual boutique properties to create a charming village-style feel. The resort's world-class spa is perched on a hill, offering stunning views of nearby Cayuga Lake. Expect a range of Ayurvedic- and holistic-inspired services, including reiki, dry brushing, and hammam rituals, along with signature massages and body treatments. Other wellness-centric amenities include hydrotherapy circuits, a sauna, and a steam room. It's also worth mentioning that the town of Aurora itself was recently named America's Best Small Spa and Wellness Town by T+L.
Sundara Inn & Spa
Courtesy of Sundara Inn & Spa
Sundara Inn & Spa in the Wisconsin Dells was recently named a 2023 World's Best Award winner, making it among T+L readers' favorite Midwest resorts . Take your pick of dozens of spa services, including seasonal favorites like pumpkin spice latte-themed manicures and body polishes (available through November) and the Winter Warm Up (an array of bath and body treatments featuring notes of Madagascar vanilla and freshly distilled small-batch bourbon). Post-spa, head to one of the scheduled wellness activities like journaling, breathwork, yoga, or sound healing. Otherwise, enjoy a dip in one of three pools, unwind in one of the relaxation lounges, or take advantage of the five-step hydrotherapy circuit. We'd also be remiss not to mention the spa-like suites and villa accommodations — some of which have bonus features like private outdoor soaking pools, expansive balconies, and fireplaces.
The American Club Resort Hotel
Courtesy of Kohler Co.
The 2023 World's Best Award -winning American Club Resort Hotel is another Midwest staple. Located in the charming town of Kohler (yes, like the company known for its toilets, tubs, and sinks), the property — which is part of the greater Destination Kohler complex — offers world-class golf, top-notch food and drink offerings, and the over-the-top 25,000-square-foot Kohler Waters Spa. Speaking of the spa, it's renowned for its water-centric facilities, including a hydrotherapy circuit, relaxation pool, rooftop whirlpool, and cold plunge pools. There are also a handful of hydrotherapy treatments and one-of-a-kind bath rituals. Let the relaxation continue at the adults-only American Club Carriage House, where luxury rooms and suites include deep soaking tubs.
The Ranch Malibu
Courtesy of The Ranch Malibu
Famous for its organic vegan cuisine, luxury cottage accommodations, and signature weeklong retreat (aptly named The Ranch), this luxury health and wellness resort just so happens to be T+L readers' favorite domestic destination spa of 2023. Your day starts off with some early morning stretches followed by breakfast and up to four hours of group hiking. Before you know it, it's time for lunch and naptime. Then, you're off to strength training and yoga, followed by your daily massage. Post-treatment, you'll have free time to lounge by the pool, check out the infrared sauna or cryotherapy, or cozy up with a good book in one of the common areas. Best of all, says Kulkarni, "Everything is taken care of here for you, so all you have to do is enjoy the daily exercise, amazing food, and relaxation."
Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort
Courtesy of Sensei Lanai
" Sensei Lana'i is a breathtakingly beautiful property on the secluded island of Lana'i (you won't see a single traffic light anywhere) that can be done at your own pace," explains Fora travel advisor Cindy Lu . "The island vibe takes off any pressure to hurry and ‘feel better,’ and you're allowed to center yourself in nature, comfort, and nourishment." The idyllic flora-filled property offers a slew of noteworthy amenities, including dining by Nobu, a tranquil pool area, complimentary beach shuttle service, wellness and fitness classes, and a soaking tub-dotted secret garden. However, says Lu, "The best part is having access to a private spa hale for yourself — a small bath house for relaxation and treatment that is an otherworldly experience."
Civana Wellness Resort & Spa
Courtesy of Civana
Let your worries melt away at Civana Wellness Resort & Spa . Located in the aptly named town of Carefree, this dreamy desert oasis is "known for its emphasis on holistic health and rejuvenation," says Ismail. She continues telling T+L, "With a focus on mindfulness, nutrition, and relaxation, Civana provides a serene retreat for guests seeking to unwind, improve their health, and connect with nature in a peaceful desert setting." Although it's not all-inclusive, the 2023 World's Best Award-winner offers a whopping 70-plus free fitness, personal growth, and spiritual classes every week — along with luxe accommodations, bike rentals, and access to 5,000-plus square feet of fitness, yoga, and meditation space. The spa features a hydrotherapy circuit and restorative treatments ranging from CBD massages and botanical-infused body scrubs to reiki and sound healing.
Ojo Santa Fe
Courtesy of Ojo Santa Fe Spa Resort

This 77-acre property is famous for spring-fed thermal waters, where you can easily spend the entire afternoon soaking. "Shared pools are beautifully integrated into the grounds, and private soaking tubs with their own wood-burning kiva fireplaces are [also] available to reserve," explains Henzerling. Post-soak, head to the spa to indulge in signature treatments like the Lavender Body Quench Massage and Wrap. Carve out enough time to partake in daily morning yoga, go hiking, or attend a temazcal ceremony. Meanwhile, animal lovers also have the opportunity to snuggle with puppies and mingle with chickens. At the end of the day, retreat to your casita, which the travel advisor describes as "spacious and private, combining a minimalist aesthetic with creature comforts like fireplaces and throw blankets."
Lake Austin Spa Resort
Courtesy of Lake Austin Spa Resort
This adults-only all-inclusive oasis is nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country along the shores of Lake Austin. The 25,000-square-foot LakeHouse Spa offers more than 100 different treatments. Be sure to also take advantage of ample on-site activities and amenities like non-motorized water sports, daily hikes, fitness classes, culinary and cocktail classes, three pools, and a lakeside beach area. Meanwhile, the 40 rooms and suites are equally impressive, with bright, airy interiors and detail-oriented touches like vitamin C-infused shower heads and soaking tubs. When it comes time to refuel, head to the dining room to feast on seasonal cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients.
Hilton Head Health
Hilton Head, South Carolina is most famous for its golf courses and beaches. Unbeknownst to many, it's also home to one of the country's best wellness resorts: Hilton Head Health is a 2023 World's Best Award-winning property that offers three types of wellness retreats and three types of weight loss programs — all of which are all-inclusive of meals and snacks, fitness classes and facilities, lectures, sauna access, and activities like biking and yoga. Naked? With Strangers? In Europe, It’s How You Relax at the Spa.
Austria and Germany abound with popular resorts called thermen where getting the full sauna experience typically means having to take it all off.
By Valeriya Safronova
Valeriya Safronova, who is based in Vienna, steamed and soaked at three nude spas while reporting for this article.
Had I ever seen so much bare flesh in one room? Naked in a mixed-gender Austrian sauna, I sat opposite two dozen other nude people on wooden benches. Even after more than a year of living in Europe, as an American, I still felt a little uncomfortable sitting there in nothing but my own skin.
The sauna master came in to warm things up. Tall and lanky, wearing just a towel wrapped around his hips, he wheeled in a cart with several grapefruit-size balls of crushed ice infused with essential oils like black pepper, lime and eucalyptus. After a short speech telling us to leave immediately if we felt dizzy, he placed one of the ice balls onto a tray of hot coals, and it began to sizzle. The smell reminded me of an expensive aromatic candle: a touch sweet, a touch spicy.
He twisted forward, backward and sideways with a large towel clutched between his hands, like a half-dressed matador, moving the air around the room with a singular goal: to get us very, very hot, as part of a sauna ritual called aufguss, German for “infusion.” As I watched, mesmerized, I began to forget my awkwardness — or that I was even naked.
No swimsuits allowed
Austria and Germany abound with spas called thermen — resorts with pools, saunas, lakes, restaurants, bars and treatment areas. Typically, they have a warm mineral spring, and a section where nudity is required. Walk in wearing swim trunks and you’ll get glares and maybe even reprimands.
I had traveled to St. Martins Therme & Lodge in Frauenkirchen, a small town about an hour southeast of Vienna. St. Martins stands next to a serene, shallow lake where guests can swim in the summer or take a cold plunge in winter. At the center of the therme is an atrium with a pool that has indoor and outdoor areas connected via a tunnel, floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto the lake and several levels of balconies with rows of lounge chairs. The complex has five saunas and a steam room; 11 thermal pools; a treatment area with massages, facials and more; a restaurant; and a cafe. A day pass is 53 euros, or about $58.
After about five minutes of intense sweating in the sauna, we moved on to the second stage of the aufguss: Still naked, we filed outside into a courtyard with a whirlpool and walls covered in vines. My skin was so hot that the normally stinging 40-degree November air felt like a balm. An attendant handed each of us scoops of a salt-and-coconut-oil scrub, which we dutifully rubbed into our skin.
Thoroughly scoured, we returned to our perches inside, where the sauna master whipped out an oversize fan and spent the next six or seven minutes in a hot-air crescendo. After about 15 minutes total, the aufguss ended, and we flooded back out through the door, our bodies bright red and steamy.
Sit back, relax and ‘don’t stare’
The aufguss is just one of the joys of a day at a therme, which might also include a body treatment, a soak in a heated outdoor pool with rotating jets and a fresh schnitzel with an icy glass of wheat beer or sparkling apple juice. For locals in German-speaking countries, the aufguss is a hugely popular pastime, especially in the late fall and winter.
“I really enjoy it after a week of hard work, or when I just need relaxation, or if my body is really tense and my muscles are really stiff,” said Laura Blumenstiel, 29, a psychologist from Freiburg, in the southwestern corner of Germany, who has been a frequent visitor to thermen for about decade.
Typically, a therme complex is divided into two sections: one with several heated indoor and outdoor pools, where bathing suits are required and children are allowed, and a second that usually contains all the saunas, where clothing is verboten.
For some Americans, including me, nudity, especially in a mixed-gender environment, can initially feel extremely uncomfortable. Keon West, a professor of social psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London, explained that cultural standards often affect what level of nudity people find tolerable: In some places, seeing women with their hair uncovered might feel racy, while in others, stripping down on a public beach is perfectly acceptable.
“You might think the Germans are a bit risqué, whereas they think they’re normal, and you’re a bit silly,” Dr. West said.
In countries like the United States, he said, there is a “highly sexualized and puritanical culture, where sex is tightly controlled. Attitudes are generally much more conservative concerning what women do and women’s bodies. In Europe that tends to be less of the case.”
In a number of studies, Dr. West and his team have found that being naked around others can increase self-confidence and life satisfaction. “If you go to a naturist event, you see a lot of normal people, people who aren’t airbrushed and aren’t Beyoncé, and you realize you don’t look bad compared to the average person,” Dr. West said. “And you spend time naked in their company and nothing bad happens. No one says anything bad to you, no one laughs at you.”
Some Americans have found that the discomfort of being nude in the sauna is fleeting and has a worthwhile payoff.
After moving to Graz, Austria, Amy Feineman, 38, a saddle fitter originally from Colorado, made the hourlong drive to Rogner Bad Blumau , a colorful, trippy therme and hotel designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an Austrian architect who believed that “the straight line is the curse of our civilization.” At the therme (day visit, €57), this philosophy translates to wavy floors, circular buildings with uneven ceilings, and bright orange, blue and green mosaics. On their first visit, Ms. Feineman and her husband skipped the nude sauna area, instead exploring the pools and outdoor gardens partly clothed. But on their second visit, they felt brave enough to bare it all in the sauna area.
“It took us most of our first day there to build up the courage to check it out, and then we spent most of our time there,” Ms. Feineman said. “I’m a plus-size person, and in the U.S., I would never wear a bikini in public. Here, I’m happily walking around the nude area.”
Ms. Feineman and her husband are regular guests at Rogner Bad Blumau now. Her main piece of advice for other nervous Americans? “Don’t stare,” she said. “And don’t worry about them judging you either.”
The most basic entry ticket to a therme, with the sauna section included, usually costs from €40 to €65, depending on how fancy or large the complex is. Typically, thermen offer at least three ticket options: a three- or four-hour pass, a day pass, and an evening pass. For example, Therme Erding in Germany, about an hour northeast of Munich, has 24 saunas and a large indoor-outdoor pool in the nude section, and costs €62 for an entire weekend day.
The best way to experience a therme is to relax and settle in for at least a half day. Bring a book. Schedule a massage, a facial or a “soft pack,” a treatment in which a massage therapist rubs a hydrating cream into your skin, then leaves you ensconced in a contraption that’s a cross between a sleeping bag and a warm water bed.
Thermen usually offer packages that encourage daylong retreats. For example, St. Martins, where my aufguss odyssey began, has an option that costs €107 and includes a bathrobe, slippers, unlimited towels and snacks.
Sweltering with a soundtrack
The sauna master was playing pulsing Austrian pop music and handing out bottles of cold, nonalcoholic beer to the 40 or so of us gathered at Alpentherme Gastein , about 90 minutes south of Salzburg (day visit, €45.50), for a party-themed evening aufguss. The balls of crushed ice flashed from the lights shining beneath them, and he encouraged us to chat, a rarity in most saunas.
Aufguss sessions come in all different types. Some sauna masters blast Metallica, while others prefer calming beats. Some dress up as Vikings. But there are two immutable rules: No clothes, and don’t enter an aufguss once it’s started (you can leave anytime).
A few other tips: Always sit on a towel in the dry saunas, claim your spot at an aufguss a few minutes early (the higher you sit, the hotter you’ll be), don’t bring your phone into nude areas, and shower before entering.
I had come a long way toward embracing my naked self by the time I sat down in the party-themed aufguss and started grooving to the music. It required a little bit of letting go: of my fears, of my ego and of my control. Glancing around — without staring, of course — I could see that no one around me looked like Jennifer Lopez or Jeremy Allen White. We were all just beautiful lumps and bumps.
Was anyone judging my body? To be honest, I was way too hot to care.

The Best Ski Resort Spas for Après Relaxation
By Stacey Lastoe
A ski destination’s aprés scene often ranks highly in determining the best places to ski around the world. But, as much as we love a boozy hot chocolate on a sun-drenched patio with a mountain looming in the background after a day on the slopes, we’d be lying if we didn’t admit that a ski resort’s spa scene is equally—if not more—important than its live music and cocktail offerings. After all, what better way to set yourself up for days of successful parallels down powdery white steeps than a visit to a luxurious spa? Here are nine of the globe’s most noteworthy places to ski and spa.
All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.
The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole - Jackson Hole, Wyoming Arrow
Some of the country’s most challenging terrain is found in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This is not a mountain for beginners—though thoughtfully, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort offers a deeply discounted lift ticket for those who only wish to access the mountain’s limited beginner slopes. For everyone else, this is a place to show off your turns and pick up some speed along the way. A stay at the outstanding Four Seasons Jackson Hole , which recently celebrated its 20-year anniversary, means you can post up at the spa immediately after skiing down to the main base. Couples will delight in the suite for deep tissue massages (opt for 90 minutes for ultimate relaxation), and if you’re looking to get energized before kicking off aprés ski, see how long you can last in the cold plunge.
Palace Spa at Gstaad Palace - Gstaad, Switzerland Arrow
As far as Alps skiing goes, Gstaad’s location in the Sarine Valley in western Switzerland, is ideal for beginners and those who are sensitive to high altitudes (1,400 is the highest point, making this a fine introduction to European piste, and off-piste, activity). As delightful as it is to ski or snowboard in one of the country’s toniest towns (Madonna and Justin Timberlake are fans, to name a couple of celebs), it’s even better unwinding back at the ultra luxurious Gstaad Palace . If the cold weather is wreaking havoc on your face, consider the rejuvenating facial (Augustinus Bader products are a featured part of the service), or book a spa suite and prepare to be scrubbed down until your dry, wintery skin is once again buttery soft, supple, and smooth.
Spa Montage at Montage Big Sky - Big Sky, Montana Arrow
When Montage opened in Big Sky, Montana, it was kind of a big deal for the region. The luxury, mountainside property catering to couples, families, and solo ski bunnies debuted in 2021 and in addition to being the community’s first five-star property at the time of its opening, it also brought the first spa of its level. The 10,000 square-foot space is a true haven for fans of the sport Big Sky is known for — and for those who are mostly in it for the aprés action . The Alpine-inspired spa’s high altitude acclimation massage, which opens the diaphragm and lung points and eases headache tension, is designed to help you adjust to the region’s elevation. It finishes with an oxygen beverage to further assist in getting acclimated. Meanwhile, the hot stone and hot toddy massage is the ideal antidote to cold-weather acclimation.
Spa by Clarins at Hotel Mont Blanc Chamonix - Chamonix, France Arrow
One of Europe’s most storied ski towns—and for good reason as it is home to Western Europe’s highest peak—Chamonix’s steep terrain is world-class and not for newbies. On the other hand, if navigating the mountain’s challenging slopes proves too much for jet-lagged travelers, at least respite can be found at Hotel Mont Blanc’s Spa by Clarins. Start your spa day in the outdoor hot tub or sauna, and from there ease into a Clarins facial which starts with a 25-minute massage. A personalized skin analysis and diagnosis means this is no one-size-fits-all treatment, though the common denominator is the use of pure plant extracts and high quality aromatic essential oils. We like the Power Hydrator best during ski season when dry cheeks are crying out for comfort.

Vida Spa at Fairmont Chateau Whistler - Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia Arrow
The largest ski resort in North America, Whistler Blackcomb’s vast terrain is practically guaranteed to help you level up your downhill abilities. Getting around the huge mountain may require some quad-pumping traversing, however, as you navigate your way around the blues and blacks, but, luckily, the remedy for those tired muscles can be found at Fairmont Chataeu Whistler ’s Vida Spa. The tranquil retreat combines Ayurvedic principles with modern practices—the Shirodhara, which involves a steady stream of warm oil poured over the crown of the head, is said to quiet the mind while also reducing headaches and head congestion. The classic Ayurvedic massage (spring for the indulgent 120-minute option) is the way to go if your Whistler plans involve conquering the double-black diamond Whistler Bowl area.
Spa Chasi La Sothys at Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve - Niseko, Japan Arrow
Higashiyama Niseko Village is worthy of praise for a number of reasons; the spectacular views of nearby Mount Yotei seen through the Ritz Carlton Reserve hotel’s glass walls is just one notable attribute. If you’ve come here to ski, you’ve come to the right place, for the hotel lies at the base of Mount Annupuri and is really and truly ski-in/ski-out. At the end of the day, after you’ve had your fill of swooshing through Hokkaido’s powdery slopes, you’ll arrive back at the Ritz, home to the Spa Chasi La Sothys, where land-sourced ingredients take center stage. This being Japan, there are also private onsens located within the serene spa, but in addition to a soothing soak, you’d be remiss not to experience one of the spa’s signature treatments, such as Nature’s Wisdom, a massage incorporating black silica, a Hokkaido-specific element used by the indigenous Ainu in healing rituals.
Schweizerhof Spa at Hotel Schweizerhof - Zermatt, Switzerland Arrow
After a day gliding gracefully down some of Europe’s best slopes—breaking, perhaps, for lunch at Michelin-starred Chez Vrony , set at 6,560 feet up with iconic Matterhorn views—unwind back in town at Hotel Schweizerhof’s swanky spa. Book a treatment—the foot reflexology massage does wonders for weary feet emerging from stiff ski boots and the Alpine Herb Stamps massage aims to lossen blockages in the body and promote the flow of energy. Alternatively, book an appointment for the aptly named private spa where pampering (with or without an additional treatment) includes a rose petal bath for one (or two), a glass of Prosecco, access to a personal steam bath, and an opportunity to put your feet up and relax with a hot cup of tea as a soft soundtrack convinces you it’s nap time.
Rosapetra Spa at Rosapetra Spa Resort - Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy Arrow
Skiing or snowboarding the Dolomites is both fun and challenging, making a spa recharge essential after a day practicing your mogul skills. Fortunately, the Rosapetra Spa has everything you need to ready your body for another day on one of Italy’s most celebrated mountains, which also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage site: Finnish sauna (kept at 90 degrees Fahrenheit), Turkish bath, ice-water wall (a fine introduction for skeptics of cold plunging), and sensory showers. Choose from one of several of Rosapetra’s patented Hatma offerings; the technique is said to deliver a three-dimensional massage, and this may be best evidenced in the Hatma Essence. A hot oil massage relaxes muscles and eases joint pain as it puts the body in a tranquil state where only good vibes and energy flow.
Skarsnuten Spa at Skarsnuten Hotel - Hemsedal, Norway Arrow
Picturesque mountain views are par for the course with ski-in/ski-out ski resorts, and in this regard Skarsnuten Hotel passes the test with spades. Norway’s second-largest ski resort, Hemsedal’s meticulously groomed trails take you through forests and valleys and ultimately drop you at Skarsnuten Spa, where the facilities alone—ice bath, sauna, foot bath, hot tub—may be enough to replenish you after a day covering the Norwegian terrain. But if you’ve made it this far to partake in the adrenaline-inducing vertical sport, you really ought to go for the Mountain Foot Treatment: feet are soaked in a magnesium-enriched tub, scrubbed and massaged, bringing circulation back to barking dogs. Head and hands aren’t left in the cold either, since a tingling scalp and hand massage are a part of the 45-minute service.
