The Lusitanos

During the Carthanigian rule, a small tribe occupied the interior of what is today the country of Portugal. This tribe was tucked in the Beira Alta area, protected by the mountains of Serra da Estrela.

The Lusitanians are what is recognized as the ancestors of the current-day Portuguese culture. They had their own Lusitanian language and an advance culture. The Lusitanians were skilled workers and fighters. During the Roman wars, the Lusitanians were led by the legendary Viriato (Viriatus). A statue of Viriato is proudly displayed in main square of the central town of Viseu. At its peak, Lusitania comprised the areas between the Douro and Tagus River.

At about 200 B.C., the Romans invaded the Iberian Peninsula, defeating the Carthaginians in the Punic Wars. The conquer of the Iberian Peninsula was relatively easy for the Romans, as they encountered friendly tribes. However, the Lusitanians were another story. They successfully held off the Romans in various legendary scrimmages. Viriatus, the Lusitanian leader, defeated several Roman legions. Only when the Romans successfully bribed a Lusitanian trusted official to kill Viriatus, did the Lusitanians fall. Thus became the period of the Romanization of Lusitania.

Have you heard of the Feira Nacional do Cavalo ? Every November, horse lovers from across Portugal (and from different parts of the world) come to the small town of Golegã, located in the Santarém District.

The Feira Nacional do Cavalo is a celebration of Portuguese equestrian culture and heritage. It features various equestrian activities, including horse exhibitions, dressage competitions, and traditional Portuguese riding styles such as Lusitano riding.

🐴 But even if you aren’t a rider, you can still come and enjoy the event.

If you do come, know that it will be hard to get accommodation in Golegã (unless you book about a year in advance and commit to staying several nights), so your best bet is to stay somewhere nearby like Santarem. There is also no public transportation all the way to Golegã. The closest train station is in Riachos, but from there you may struggle to find a ride to the fair, so driving is a good way to avoid any stress.

The fair runs for ten days at the beginning of November (exact dates vary). The weekdays are calmer while the weekends see quite a lot of drinking and larger crowds (both humans and horses).

  DAY1 | INTRODUCTION TO ST PETERSBURG

• Peter and Paul Fortress – the oldest architectural monument in the city. The date of the foundation of this foundation is considered the date of the foundation of St Petersburg itself. From its establishment the history of the city begins. In the fortress’s Ss Peter and Paul’s Cathedral almost all emperors and empresses of Russia are buried, including Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and Nicholas II and his family.
• Nevsky Prospekt – the main thoroughfare in the city; it is lined with grand buildings and is made up of several famous bridges. Practically every building on Nevsky has some interesting story or fact connected to it.
• Field of Mars – this is where victims of the Russian Revolution of 1917 were buried.
• Bronze Horseman – this is a symbol of the city; an equestrian statue of Peter the Great which was given to the city by Catherine the Great.
• Strelka of Vasilievsky Island - the strelka is the very tip of the island and many old and interesting museums are found here. Also here are two old lighthouses featuring statues of personifications of Russian rivers.
• Our Lady of Kazan Cathedral – this is one of the largest working Orthodox cathedrals in St Petersburg. It was Emperor Paul who desired the cathedral to resemble St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Work only began in 1801, after Paul's assassination, and was completed in 1811. It subsequently became a monument to the Russian victory over Napoleon in 1812.
• Peter the Great’s Cabin – this is one of the few buildings to survive from the era of the city’s famous founder.
• Avrora Cruiser – another symbol of the city; it took part in military action in the Far East, but more famously played a role in the Russian Revolution as it fired a shot to begin the storming of the Winter Palace.

  DAY2 | CATHERINE PALACE

  DAY3 | HERMITAGE AND ST ISAAC CATHEDRAL

  Hermitage (Winter Palace) – the Winter Palace is the main sight in St Petersburg. From 1762 to 1904 the palace served as the official winter residence of the Russian emperors. Its rich and varied architecture and sculptured décor have no match in St Petersburg. The Italian architect Rastrelli began building the palace in 1754 in the exuberant baroque style during the reign of Empress Elizabeth and so the style became known as Elizabethan baroque. The palace only took its final form during the reign of Empress Catherine the Great. It has over 1000 rooms, 117 staircases and around 2000 windows and doors. Today it holds the Hermitage – one of the world’s largest art galleries.

Tour Itinerary

With the 1000-year history, Russia has had a rich portfolio of conflicts, battles, wars. On this Soviet tour, we'll talk about various wars that happened in Russia, focusing on WWII.

Mother Russia has undergone a lot in its long life. Since ancient times, Russian rulers have taken nearly all political power into their own hands. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian oppositional movement was deadly set for the total destruction of the ever-lasting tsarist regime. All of Russia got involved in the bloody revolution of 1917 in an effort to abolish the current state of the government and gain freedom for the ordinary people.

You will learn about the every-day life of the Soviet people during the bloody Second World War with the Nazis, including the legendary Battle for Moscow, the 900-day siege of Leningrad, the hardships that local citizens went through, the consequences of the war and the scars it left on the Soviet people, as well as why the Cold War happened and what was the fundamental reason.

Our mission on the Soviet Russia tour is to find out

• - How much this 1917 revolution cost the people;
• - Whether they actually got the freedom they wanted and was it worth it;
• - What happened over the next 74 years;
• - Who were the main political communist leaders of the Soviet Union;
• - Were Russians happy and satisfied with the Soviet Union?

Our tour itinerary will lie in most Soviet areas of Moscow, which are quite spread throughout the city, as very few of them are left. You can choose how much you are ready to live this Soviet life on a 5, 7 or 10-hour tour. Depending on the duration of the tour, you will see part or all of the places below:

If you want to extend the tour, you are welcome to do so by paying $20/extra hour in cash on the tour.

Time stands still in Red Square. The Red Square is the heart of Moscow (and whole Russia). Saint Basil's Cathedral will make your mouth drop. If it is from May-October, have a cocktail on the outside terrace and simply people watch! The massive square offers so much to enjoy.

For an open-air museum as big as 135 ha (1 350 000 square meters), Victory park sure doens't lack diversity. The park is dedicated to the Russian victory in WWII, and was laid out in 1995 in commemoration of 50-year anniversary of victory.

Stalin had planned for its construction already in 1941, being sure of victory from the very start of the war.

Greeting Hill

The highest points in Moscow (172 meters), where Napoleon waited for keys of Moscow in vain.

Triumphal Arch

Stunning monument consisting of 12 cast-iron columns, each 12 meters high, and weighing 16 tons. Built to mark Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812.

Museum of the Great Patriotic War

In the city that is as much about wars as it is about victories, there is one essential stopover - the Museum of the Great Patriotic War (that's what WWII is called in Russia). Must-do for those wishing to understand Russia's past and look at the whole war from the different perspective - Russian.

The museum is not for the faint-hearted. Here you can see films about the partisan experience, the scenes that will haunt you forever (no subtitles, but they are not necessary).

We'll have a glance at Russian life of the XX century in the  Museum of Contemporary History , which houses bits of everything from Russian history of XXth century: from English club to a storage of Stalin's presents.

Go down 18 floors to a gigantic bunker under Moscow that was designed to withstand a nuclear attack. Watch a short film about the severity of the Cold War. If you lived through the Cold War, you will hardly believe it is possible that you are in Bunker 42!
