One of the ways to take advantage of the beautiful fall scenes is to ride the South Simcoe Steam Train . The tours run from May till October, but one of the bestsellers is their Fall Colour Excursions .

During this tour, the train goes through the Beeton Creek Valley, displaying the changing colours of the trees.

Regular excursions from Tottenham to Beeton and back take about an hour. As the train rolls through Beeton Creek Valley, the conductor provides an informative commentary. Passengers ride in restored 1920s steel heavyweight coaches. Special trains include the Easter Express , Haunted Halloween Adventure , and Santa Claus Express .

The railway operates multiple trips on Sundays and holiday Mondays between Victoria Day weekend and Canadian Thanksgiving, as well as fall color trips later in October. Halloween and Christmas trains are also scheduled.

Good to know

The town of Tottenham has a variety of quaint shops and eateries. Across the road from the railway is Tottenham Conservation Area, a park that offers swimming, camping, fishing, and hiking.

Worth doing

For a unique combination rail-water excursion, the RMS Segwun, the oldest operating steamship in North America, sails July and August on the Muskoka Lakes, about a 2-hour drive north to Gravenhurst.

Take one rail trip and then follow another for some great photos. The engine faces south into the sun, and the relatively slow pace of the train makes it easy to follow.

Getting there

No public transit is available in this neck of the woods. Tottenham is about an hour’s drive north of Toronto. From Highway 400, take Highway 9 west 9 miles to Tottenham Road, and turn right. Continue into downtown Tottenham and turn left onto Mill Street to reach the station.

Location: 28 Mill Street West, Tottenham, ON Phone: 1-905-936-5815 Website: steamtrain.ca E-mail: [email protected]

A unique experience

We only travelled from Ulan Ude to Kungur (3 nights and 2 days) but what an experience! I was surprised at how quickly the time passed with changing scenery and regular stops. We travelled second class - the beds were comfortable, linen spotless and the carriage attendant continually cleaned the toilets. The food service in the diner was good.

After years of dreaming this trip and finally doing it I think I will recommend it to anyone. I’m not going to lie, is not really comfortable but still an amazing experience. Be ready and learn as much as you can on YouTube etc. My advise..Russian train hosts are horrible!! I don’t know why because in general Russians are lovely but on the train are just horrible. Zero English and zero smile. I think the company should really take this advise. In the end we are paying lots of money and they are getting pay thanks to us right??? Chinese train to Mongolia is maybe worst quality (toilets are dirty and smelly and no shower) but the boaters are more nice)

We travelled from Moscow to Beijing by private rail tour company Zarengold in a Czars Gold superior cabin between 5 and 17 May 2018. We did not know what to expect but after travelling for 12 days we could not fault the service, train and staff. it was like a Rhine river cruise only on a train. The cabin on the train cannot be compared to the cabin on the cruise but the atmosphere on the train was very good. Meals were sufficient and the off train tours were excellent. would highly recommend this type of tour as it is a one off. our direct tour guide was absolutely amazing.

This is not about a day trip but about using the Trans Siberian Railway and a guide book and is by way of a word of advice to avoid the error that I made. I am travelling from Moscow to Beijing but not direct. I’m stopping off in Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk and Ullanbaator before arriving in China. I was using Trailblazer’s Trans-Siberian Handbook 9th edition. On my 1st leg to Yekaterinburg from Moscow I made the assumption that my train would be using the same rail route as the train that goes direct to Beijing. As we travelled I was confused thoroughly by the stations we passed and those where we stopped because they did not seem to relate to my guide book. It was only half way through the trip that the penny dropped. My train was not using the same route as my guide book. Apart from that I can thoroughly recommend the trip. I travelled 3rd class sleeper and despite not speaking a word of Russian had an excellent time getting to know my fellow travellers, not a Brit among them.

7 days from Moscow to Vladivostok and never a moments boredom! The two of us (my friend is over 70 and I am nearly 70 - females) were in a 2nd class compartment with the possibility of men sharing. And this is who we got! The guy who shared the bulk of the trip, Alexander, didn't speak a word of English but was a good companion. Compartments are small, but it wasn't a problem. I suggest minimum luggage - we stayed in same clothes the whole way except underwear (I had disposable knickers). Wet wipes a good idea. 2 toilets for 36 people. Also no problem: they were kept clean. We took food with us, thankfully because there were not the babushkas at the stops selling pies, salamis, fruit etc. We only ate once in restaurant. The ticket allowed us one cold meal (a biscuit!!!) and one hot meal (which was nice) the whole trip. We had thought it was each day one meal. We established a routine. It was a total rest, interrupted by our meals, station stops and looking at scenery. The endless birch and fir forests were not a bore, they were peaceful. Rest of time we read and dozed. The 7 time zones were never a problem. The trip exceeded our expectations.

Let me tell you about the Moscow-Vladivostok Trans-Siberian experience we had last summer with Travel All Russia, also known as Firebird Tours. There is a lot I have to say about the journey so I will take you through point by point. Group size - There was 8 of us on the same journey, and we melded together well and quickly. I wouldn't have picked better travel buddies myself. We still keep in touch to this day! Tour leader - Our group had a tour leader that was traveling with us on the same train. Since we were all quite experienced in traveling, all we needed from the Evgenyi was to point us in the right direction. He remained diplomatic, professional, and knowledgable when some minor organizational glitches occurred. Local guides - Besides our tour leader, we had local guides waiting for us at every stop. They showed us around their cities and shared extensive knowledge about Russian history and culture. Time with them was exciting and valuable, but I still wish that we had more time to do our own thing. Train & staff onboard - Our train compartment accommodation, although small, was good and basically comfortable, with enough storage for all our luggage. Train staff was top-knotch too. We were assisted by a retired Russian couple who didn't speak English, but we developed a genuine connection with them through the help of our tour leader Evgenyi and saw them as part of our group. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Trip itself - The hotels were all comfortable and just right for us, and we enjoyed all the tours included. We saw an incredible number of interesting landmarks and got to experience the Russian culture first-hand. All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend booking Trans-Siberian with Travel All Russia/ Firebird Tours.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

Around Rizhskaya Metro Station

Rizhsky railway station and moscow railway museum.

Rizhsky Railway Station (July 2013)

Rizhsky Railway Station is one of Moscow's nine railway stations.  It was opened in 1901 and was originally known as Vindavsky Railway Station after the Latvian city of Venta which was then known as Vindava.  It was later renamed Baltiysky, after the Baltic, and the Rzhevsky, after the city of Rzhev, before finally becoming Rizhsky after the Latvian capital of Riga.  The city serves long distance trains heading to Riga (including the Latvia-Express) and to the Pskov Region.  In addition suburban trains also head in the direction of Volokolamsk and Istra.

Moscow Railway Museum at Rizhsky Railway Station

fall colour excursions south simcoe railway

Just next to Rizhsky Railway Station is Moscow Railway Museum at Rizhsky Railway Station which is a branch of the Moscow Railway Museum which was opened in 2004.  Unlike the main museum outside Paveletsky Railway Station, this branch is predominantly an outdoor museum exhibiting old types of trains.  In total there are over 60 exhibits including 12 steam engines, 10 diesel locomotives, seven electric trains and three wagons.  Many of the museum's exhibits are often used in films and television programmes.
