The best time to take a Bulgaria tour depends on what you plan to do there.

How to Get Around on Your Bulgaria Trip

Bulgaria is a country bordered by five others, so travelling overland by bus, train and car is common. Once in Bulgaria, there are a number of ways to get around which will suit any budget or travel style;

A self-drive Bulgaria itinerary is a great way to see the country. Travelling at your own pace, with highway signs in both English and Bulgarian, driving around this country is easy. To top it off, car rental in Bulgaria is one of the cheapest on the continent; a compact car costs around US$130 for two weeks. 

Tip: If you are bringing your own car to Bulgaria, you’ll need to buy a vignette to display on your windscreen. These are sold at petrol stations and post offices. All rental cars should have one of these already. 

Public transport is an inexpensive way to get around on your Bulgaria holiday. However, it can be very slow and not always the most comfortable. When travelling between major towns and cities, the autobus will be your quickest, most affordable way. The tickets are bought at the bus station prior to travel or in more remote areas, from the bus driver. 

If capital city breaks are your thing and you have a Sofia trip in mind, then the subway will become your best friend on your trip. Two lines connect important parts of the city, the city centre and the airport for as little as US$0.90. In some of Bulgaria’s cities, you’ll find that trams and trolleybuses are your go-to transport. 

Interestingly, train travel in Bulgaria is often cheaper than private or minibus travel, however, it is a lot slower. The journey between Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo takes five hours by train and only three hours by bus. 

Due to its compact size, Bulgaria only has two domestic flight routes. Both are operated by Bulgaria air; one is between Sofia and Burgas, and the other is between Sofia and Varna. Neither of the routes usually cost more than US$40.

Whatever you’re looking for, Bulgaria has a wide range of accommodation to choose from. Hostels and hotels are centred around the cities, whilst in the more remote areas, you’ll find small family-run accommodation is more common.

As the capital city, Sofia is often the top of the list of places to visit in Bulgaria and will likely be your first stop. Unlike the rest of Europe, high-class international hotels are very affordable in Sofia and more and more unique independent hotels pop-up all the time. For those on a budget, the city’s array of arty hostels will suit. 

Basing yourself in Sofia is a great option. Day trips from Sofia to places like Plovdiv are a great option if you are choosing to base yourself in one place. 

Known for its clean sandy beaches, vibrant nightlife and historic towns, Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast is a popular choice for trips. From the main cities of Varna and Burgas to the cultural hotspots of Balchick and Sozopol, Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast offers something for everyone. When it comes to accommodation, that is also true. Here, you’ll find every type of accommodation you can imagine; think campsites and beach huts to skyscraper lodges, and you have only scratched the surface. 

Take advantage of Bulgaria’s rich folkloric customs and slower pace of life by staying in the countryside. For a glimpse of the old Bulgaria, 19th-century wooden houses and charming narrow alleys characterise your stay in places like Leshten.

Bulgarian fare is like a perfect mix between key Balkan cuisines, Greek and Turkish food. Barbecued meats, an influx of dairy products and fresh ingredients find their way onto the plates of most Bulgarian dishes. 

These meals are usually eaten in restaurants or mehanas (taverns), the latter being a little more folksy in its atmosphere and decor with a wider choice of local dishes. Whilst vegetarian dishes are abundant on Bulgarian menus, the country’s fascination with cheese means that those that choose a plant-based or dairy-free lifestyle may struggle. 

Read for the dishes and drinks that you must try in Bulgaria;

Literally translating to ‘earthenware dish’, gyuvech is Bulgaria’s best-known dish comprising peppers, aubergines and beans cooked in a rich stew with added meat and stock. A variation of this dish is kavarma which is prepared in a similar way but with a dose of added spice. 

A simple but delicious combination of chunky, diced tomatoes, cucumber, pepper and onion, finished with grated sirene cheese and parsley, there will always be a shopska salad on the table. 

The king of the grill, often known simply as kebab, kepapche is the perfect side dish or snack with a cold beer on a Bulgarian summer’s day. The dish itself consists of a long piece of grilled mincemeat with added spices like black pepper and cumin. 

The classic kepapche dish is three kinds of grilled meat ( kepapche ), with an assortment of sides, one being crispy french fries with grated sirene cheese melted on top. Yum. 

Simply put: pastry heaven. Found in bakeries all over the country, Banitsa is a slab of layered sweet pastry similar to filo, often filled with sweet white cheese or apples and walnuts. For the savoury version, you can opt for onions, spinach, mushrooms or pumpkin to be your filling. 

Banitsa is a staple part of the traditional Bulgarian breakfast. 

Enjoying many different variations across the Balkan region, Bulgaria’s version of this classic dish consists of potatoes, eggs and minced pork meat. The well-known greek version layers aubergine to make this dish, whilst the Bulgarian version is strictly potatoes. The whole dish is then covered in thick Bulgarian yoghurt and baked. 

How do you like your toast in the morning?

A Bulgarian local will always reply, with lyutenitsa spread on top. Lyutenitsa is a thick relish-like sauce of tomatoes and roasted peppers with added onions, garlic and cumin. Whilst you can buy this relish in commercially-produced jars now, Bulgarian families will often boast that their homemade lyutenitsa is the best. 

Last but not least, the perfect accompaniment to any dish. 

Tarator is the ultimate summer refresher. This cold yoghurt soup is made with cucumbers, garlic, dill and sometimes walnuts. It is light, refreshing and famous in Bulgaria for its health benefits. 

Major Festivals & Events in Bulgaria

A country rich in culture and tradition will always have festivals to match; Bulgaria is no exception. Unique traditions have been passed on from generation to generation and Bulgaria celebrates these in a variety of ways;

Bulgaria is one of the biggest producers of rose oil in the world. Bulgaria’s rose oil is a major player in the perfume industry as it is also used as a greasing component in space equipment due to its resistance to temperature changes. Every year since 1903 in the first week of June, the town of Kazanlak in Bulgaria’s Rose Valley has celebrated this industry with folk dancing, rose-scented products, live music and a procession led by the elected ‘Queen of Roses’.

It has become one of the top attractions in Bulgaria with thousands of international travellers visiting each year to take part in the Rose Festival. 

This five-day festival of culture sees street parties, musical performances and arty antics carrying on late into the night in Plovdiv’s artistic neighbourhoods. From folk costume shows to conceptual art and an array of vibrant exhibitions in between, this is a festival that art lovers won’t want to miss. 

One of the biggest festivals in the Balkans and Bulgaria, Surva or ‘the International Festival of Masquerade Games’ is one of the world’s greatest traditional folk festivals. Held annually on the last weekend in January, the festival usually involves over 6,000 people from over 100 masquerade groups gathering to participate in this vibrant festival where costumes are an absolute must. 

Currency: Bulgaria uses Bulgarian Lev (BGN). At the time of writing, November 2020, 1 BGN was equivalent to $0.61 USD.

Religion: The dominant religion in Bulgaria is Orthodox Christianity; over 60% of Bulgarians belong to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. 

Language: The official language is Bulgarian; however, in large cities and towns frequented by international visitors such as Varna, Sofia and Plovdiv, most locals will speak some English. When you venture into rural Bulgaria, that is an entirely different story, so knowing a few basic phrases is invaluable.

Visa: Those from the UK and Schengen countries are able to visit Bulgaria visa-free for up to 90 days. Those from other countries should check with Bulgarian immigration before travelling. 

Safety: Overall, Bulgaria is a pretty safe country. The biggest risks are taxi scams and petty crimes like pick-pocketing. Always insist on a meter in taxis and keep your belongings close in crowded areas.

End of the Earth

Great sights, wonderful 12 to 15 hour days of sunsets and sunrises. Huge portions of steak and meat. There are a few 4 or 5 days of hiking days and one or 2 long travel days, but it was a great adventure. Weather does change quickly on the mountain hikes from springy to cold fall weather. I liked that there were more than on guide available on longer hikes. The best part was visiting Ushuaia, which is the end of the earth which is a cool seaport town. I would recommend the excursion tierra del fuego national park for its sunken garden feel. The accomodations were a mix of ruggedness with 2 days camping, and the rest hotels. Organized tour guide with tons of optional excursions.

I received all the vouchers in time prior the travel (airport transfers, accommodation, activity and bus tickets/vouchers). I had some questions during the preparation period which were promptly answered by Hi Travel team. From the first to the last day everything was well organized. You need to be a bit flexible person if you take this trip because of the hostel type of accommodation and the long traveling time by bus (altogether 118 hours=5 full days). But hey, the price is good! ???? Programs were good, tourist guides always came and picked me up at the exact meeting points and time. One of my programs was cancelled due to worker's strike, I contacted Hi Travel Argentina straight away and the price was refunded in 1 hour by TourRadar. All in all, I was very satisfied with this trip and can recommend it to others.

4-Days Discovery Puerto Natales & Torres del Paine

This was an excellent 4 day 'taster' of Chilean Patagonia. I knew nothing of the area and my booking was casual in the extreme especially as I'd not had all that much contact with the agency. However, the tour exceeded our expectations - very well thought out balance of walking and touring and boat. Everything went like clockwork. The choice of hotel in Puerto Natales (Martin Gusinde) was excellent and the staff super helpful. Drivers in the various transport vehicles and their guides were equally professional. The meal on the first day (Torres del Paine excursion) at a hotel near the Lago ping was very good. My only criticism would be the meal at the Estancia on the last day which was advertised as a roast lamb on the spit. The food from start to finish was mediocre at best - a slippery soup, followed by very dry lamb, a few potatoes and half a tinned peach for desert. Water not included. All in all though a very enjoyable few days.

The G adventure tour is excellent. The trip was great because of excellent program and great CEO from G adventure. Starting from Buenos Arias, everything is planned and taking care of. We had excellent weather, a great group of adventure minded people. Val (our CEO from G adventure) communicated everything ahead of time and making sure everyone's needs were met. The sighs and hiking were great. Val reserved dinner for the group almost everyday so we could have fun after a hard day of hiking. All in all, a trip to remember.

Employment Visa

Requirements.

The sponsor in Saudi Arabia must apply for a visa authorization through the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Once the application is approved, it will appear in the MOFA and MOL systems. The sponsor must provide the applicant with a copy of an electronic Power of Attorney (also known as Tafweed- must be in the name of the applicant only and no agent name).

Medical Report

• If you require a medical report, the report is valid for only Three months from the date of issue.
• Please note that all tests on the Medical form must be completed. These medical tests are available in Canada and their completion is mandatory (few physicians may suggest that the testing is not needed, however it must be completed in order for the Saudi work visa application to be processed).
• If the medical report is processed in Canada, it will take approximately one month.
• If the medical report is processed outside of Canada, it has to be identical to the medical form at the bottom of this page and testified by the Saudi Arabian Embassy IN THE COUNTRY OF ISSUE.
• You MUST confirm with your doctor that you have all required test results INCLUDING (HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and C).

Authentication of medical report

• The purpose of the attestation of the College of Physicians and Surgeons is to confirm that the physician is licensed in that province or in that territory. The College of physicians and Surgeons does not attest the test results.
• Ensure that your Medical report you require to be authenticated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons is signed by the physician and that his/her registration number appears on the report. The name of the physician must be printed and clearly legible.

Please submit:

• Visa application form (Typed out or hand written in block letters), please see “Embassy visa application form (Two Pages)” below.
• Two recent (No more than a month old) photographs (4×6 cm) on a plain white background (write name, signature and stamp date on back).
• The passport validity should correspond with the duration of the contract, and include the place of birth and two blank pages side by side. (Original Only)
• Tafweed, if the sponsor is a private business/company , a copy of an approved electronic Power of Attorney (Tafweed) with the following information: full name of the applicant (future employee) and his/her job title, POA number and date, the employer’s company name.( Not in the name of the approved agent).
• Authorization letter issued by the Cultural Bureau (if applicable) if the KSA sponsor is under the Ministry of Education (MOE) such as a government university or MOE ‘s entity: The letter has to mention the visa number, the profession applied for and if a family is coming along too. (A & A Travel & Tours can obtain this document from SCB in your behalf)
• A copy of the work contract signed by both parties and stamped from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
• The issuing institution or by a Canadian Notary Public
• Global Affairs Canada, authentication and legalization section (previous called The Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development of Canada (DFATD).
• The SCB requires two sets of original transcripts in an envelope sealed by the issuing institution (one transcript must be opened and authenticated / attested or legalized by Global Affairs Canada) in order to certify the degree (Please request that your name be written on this envelope, so we can identify it without opening the envelop). The transcripts must match the copy of the degree/diploma you are submitting for the visa application. Please send us the “from G” below if you are requesting us to stamp your degree at the Saudi Cultural Bureau in Ottawa.
• Certificate without transcripts (such as The Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) certificate, professional engineer certificate or Teacher Certificate…. etc.) must be attested first by Global Affairs Canada, authentication section, then by SCB, however SCB must receive a confirmation letter or email from issuing entity directly.

Advisable to send us two copies of your degree to be attested by the SCB:

• First copy (mandatory) will be submitted to the consular section with your visa application (the Saudi embassy in Ottawa, Canada, will keep it).
• Second copy (advisable) will be returned to you with your passport, so you can take it with you to your employer in Saudi Arabia. (the employer may request this for the employment and residency registration process in Saudi Arabia).
• Foreign Degrees must be certified by Saudi Cultural bureau in the country of issue.
• If the applicant has no degree, then a letter of experience from previous or current Canadian employer notarized by a Notary Public as well as authenticated by DFATD (New requirement) . If the issuing institution is based in a country other than Canada, the letter of experience MUST be certified by the Saudi Arabian Embassy in that country.
• Valid, less than Three months from the date of issue.
• The physician used a CHECK MARK (✔) for POSITIVE RESULTS OR NEGATIVE RESULTS only.
• The report certified by college of physicians of the issuing province (Original Only).
• Copy of all required test results including: HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and C – please attach copy of these test results after the medical report form.
• If any of the above 4 results are positive +, then your Doctor must provide a typed explanation of why they are positive. On the other hand, If the results are expressed in a numerical value, then your Doctor must provide a typed explanation that the results are interpreted as Negative and that you do not have the disease. The Doctor’s note must be typed on the Clinic’s letterhead and stamped by their official seal or stamp as well as signed by the Doctor, with their license number appearing beside the signature.
• If medical report is done outside of Canada, it must be authenticated by the KSA Embassy in that country.
• If the medical report is issued in KSA it must be authenticated by MOFA.
• An original valid Canadian Police Records Check. (Less than three months from the issuing date – you can obtain this certificate simply by NAME SEACH only and no need for fingerprint processing).
• If applicant previously worked in Saudi Arabia, a letter of release must be attached. (Original & one copy)
• Non-Canadian applicants must submit a notarized photocopy of their valid residency permit (Permanent Residence Card). Send only a copy of the front and back sides of the PR card. The copy must be notarized by a Notary Public and stamped by the Canadian Department of Global Affairs, International Trade and Development. The Notary must state on the copy that it’s a true copy of the original.
• The KSA Embassy has advised that no ticket should be purchased before issuance of the visa.
• The KSA Embassy in Ottawa can issue visas that allow travelers to enter KSA by air exclusively. No Entry By Land.
• Please ensure that your entry airport is the closest to your sponsor’s location. The port of entry to KSA must be the same or the closest airport to the location of the sponsor. If the sponsor invited the applicant to conduct business/visit in a different city other than the one displayed in the company’s Registration Certificate, the sponsor must provide a letter in Arabic explaining the reason for this. An example can be for conducting business in another branch/location of the company.

• Please submit the second page of Embassy visa application form: “NOTIFICATION TO ALL AGENTS AND ALL APPLICANTS”
