ABOUT ROBIN THICKE

Robin Thicke is a five-time GRAMMY® Award nominee, diamond-selling performer, actor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Born in Los Angeles, Robin Thicke taught himself to play piano at the age of 12 and by 16 was writing and producing songs for top R&B artists. At the age of 21, he had written and produced songs on over 20 gold and platinum albums including Michael Jackson, Marc Anthony, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Usher, Jennifer Hudson and others. One year later he signed with Jimmy Iovine and Interscope records. The musician and composer released his critically acclaimed debut album, A Beautiful World, in 2003 under the name Thicke. The collection was followed by a succession of five critically acclaimed gold and platinum selling album releases. Robin’s sixth studio album, Blurred Lines, was released in July on 2013. The album garnered four GRAMMY nominations. His 2013 sixth album, Blurred Lines crashed the Billboard Top 200 at #1 and produced the RIAA Diamond-certified title track, “Blurred Lines” [feat. T.I. & Pharrell]. The song made history, clutching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks. The hit single garnered Thicke as the first artist to simultaneously occupy the #1 spot on the Hot 100 and Top 200 since 2012, putting him in an elite group of 17 other acts to accomplish this feat in the previous decade. “Blurred Lines” scored the highest audience ever recorded and broke records by climbing to #1 on 5 radio charts simultaneously (Top 40, Rhythm, Urban, Hot AC & Urban AC) –the first time this has ever been done by an artist.

Thicke joined the panelist of judges on FOX’s dynamic reality singing competition, “The Masked Singer,” alongside Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger and show host, Nick Cannon which has received tremendous rating success and critical acclaim. In 2021, Thicke ascends to new heights with his first studio album in six years – On Earth, and in Heaven – a nod to the loss and celebrations and growth through the years. The album includes the No. 1 single on the Billboard Album R&B Songs Chart, “That’s What Love Can Do,” as well as a new Pharrell collaboration with “Take Me Higher,” which has been spotlighted as the ESPN/ABC Primetime song for the NBA season.

The show was great. The only problem was the venue. Hulu theater needs Jumbotrons for a closer look of the singers. Acoustics were great. Fantasia brought the house down. Tank was his usual sexy self

roselyn-biggers’s profile image

Before he was getting too emotional and apologetic in front of just about everyone so that they can see how sorry he is for doing his ex-wife, Paula Patton, wrong, Robin Thicke was quite the entertainer.

This is not to say that he is not a talented man. Robin has been showing off his musical chops since his 2002 single ‘When I Get You Alone’ dropped. Although back in the early 2000s, he was not tailored, clean-cut guy we see today. Instead he had long curly hair and still kind of looked like he was stuck in the 90s grunge era. But soon he realized that his look should match his sound. And as he released more albums, his style started to get more sophisticated and tapered and that goes the same for his coif. Although he already had five albums under his belt by the time ‘Blurred Lines’ dropped in 2013, it wasn’t until that Pharrell Williams-produced track that Robin finally secured himself a place in the spotlight. So that brings us to the time I saw him perform. With his R&B and soul vibe going on, he turned Manhattan’s Terminal 5 into an old-time jazz club. With a big band behind him and a trio of sexy women as his backup dancers, Robin was the star of the show. Singing his controversial hit without a hitch, he also got everyone on their feet with ‘Give It 2 U.’ However, as strong as he started, the performance did start to fall off -- not because he just wasn’t hacking it, but because hardly anyone knew his other songs.

So if you’re planning on seeing him take the stage, be sure to give his music catalogue a quick listen. Trust me, it’ll make the whole viewing experience much better.

Robin Thicke Withdraws From Ne-Yo’s Tour, Pleasure P Joins as Replacement

The "champagne and roses tour," which will also feature mario, begins sept. 9..

Robin Thicke and Pleasure P

Robin Thicke will no longer join Ne-Yo on his Champagne and Roses Tour , which kicks off next month. Pleasure P will be stepping in as a special guest.

Thicke announced Tuesday morning (Aug. 22) that he will not be able to appear on the tour due to another scheduling logistics.

“Due to scheduling conflicts with the taping of Masked Singer moving up, I am no longer able to join Ne-Yo and Mario on the Champagne & Roses Tour this Fall. I was really looking forward to it. Wishing the guys good luck on the tour,” Thicke said in a statement.

Thicke is a panelist on The Masked Singer , a celebrity singing competition. Last week, it was announced that the show’s 10th season will premiere on Fox with a special episode on Sept. 10 at 8 p.m. ET.

Hosted by Nick Cannon, The Masked Singer is set to have its official season premiere on Sept. 27.

Circling back to Ne-Yo’s Champagne and Roses Tour , the North American trek was announced in June. The Live Nation-powered tour had Thicke and Mario confirmed as supporting acts. Mario is still a part of the tour.

As mentioned above, Pleasure P is now joining the tour as a special guest.

Recently, Pleasure P performed spot dates alongside his RSVP bandmates, which consists of Ray J, Sammie and Bobby V. The R&B supergroup issued their debut single, “ Money Everywhere ,” last year.

In 2021, Pleasure P dropped released his album Business Before Pleasure .

Earlier this month, he hinted on social media that he has new tunes coming. “New music on the way,” he posted on Twitter along with a video of him performing his solo debut single, “ Did You Wrong .”

https://twitter.com/Marcus_Cooper/status/1691578157986427141

The Champagne and Roses Tour begins Sept. 9 in Detroit, Michigan, at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill.

The outing will hit other major cities nationwide before concluding Oct. 4 in Mountain View, California, at Shoreline Amphitheatre.

Earlier this year, Thicke commemorated the 20th anniversary of his debut album, A Beautiful World , by releasing an expanded edition . Prior to that, he teased his untitled ninth studio album.

Thicke’s next album could include “ Brown Liquor ,” a song he recorded in collaboration with rapper Yo Gotti. He premiered the official video for the intoxicating tune this spring.

Thicke last released an album in 2021. On Earth, and in Heaven spawned the hit single “ Look Easy .” The track spent two weeks at No. 1 on this chart, where he has claimed six chart-toppers.

“I think it’s for lovers, people falling in love, people looking for love and people that need to fall in love again,” Thicke previously told Rated R&B about On Earth, and in Heaven .

Robin Thicke Backs out of Major Tour Because of 'The Masked Singer'

'The Masked Singer' Season 10 kicks off on Sept. 27, posing 'scheduling conflicts' for Thicke's previously planned performances.

By Allison Schonter - August 28, 2023 10:28 am EDT

Robin Thicke takes his commitment to The Masked Singer seriously — so much so that he has backed out of a major tour. The "Blurred Lines" singer announced on Aug. 21 that he will no longer be able to support Ne-Yo on his upcoming Champagne and Roses tour due to "scheduling conflicts" with the hit Fox series.

"Due to scheduling conflicts with the taping of Masked Singer moving up, I am no longer able to join NE-YO and Mario on the Champagne & Roses Tour this Fall," Thicke shared with fans on social media . "I was really looking forward to it. Wishing the guys good luck on the tour!"

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NE-YO (@neyo)

Ne-Yo's upcoming Champagne and Roses tour was first announced back in June. The 15-city tour, produced by Live Nation, kicks off in Detroit on Sept. 9, with following performances in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas, and other major cities before concluding in Mountain View, California on Oct. 4. When the musician announced the tour , he said, "This one's for the GROWN & SEXY! I'm excited to announce that I'm bringing my 'Champagne & Roses' Tour with [Robin Thicke] & [Mario] to a city near YOU."

With Thicke no longer set to join the tour, Ne-Yo announced that Pleasure P will replace him. In an Instagram post last week promoting the tour, the singer asked his fans, "Y'ALL READY TO BREAK OUT THE CHAMPAGNE?!" He added, "my brothers [Mario] [Pleasure P] and I are heading to a city near you beginning 9/9!"

While Ne-Yo, Mario, and Pleasure P are trekking through America for the tour, Thicke will be hard at work on Fox's The Masked Singer Season 10 , which is set to premiere on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 8 p.m. ET, with the show's competition episodes then airing at the usual time slot of Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET. The upcoming season will feature three groups of contestants and Battle Royale semi-final competition episode, with the premiere episode bringing back Michelle Williams, Rumer Willis, Joey Fatone, Bow Wow, Victor Oladipo, and Barry Zito to perform unmasked duets. So far, five costumes have been confirmed for the upcoming competition: Donut, Anteater, Hawk, Hibiscus and a life-size S'More. Along with Thicke, judges Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong, and Nicole Scherzinger. Thicke has judged since the show's premiere.

Robin Thicke

Thirty years ago when Robin Thicke was 16, he recorded his first album with R&B star Brian McKnight . But the music wasn’t epic.

“[The label] was willing to put it out, but there wasn’t going to be a lot of promotion money behind it, so I said, ‘Let’s shelve it,’” he recalls.

Michael jackson biopic casts its jackson 5, hollywood flashback: in 1987, martin scorsese and michael jackson made a thrilling duo.

But he needed to get back to making music for himself, so the early twentysomething decided he wouldn’t cut his hair until he heard his song on the radio.

“My hair grew down to my shoulders, and I ended up meeting Andre Harrell, who changed my life and taught me about artistry and connection and culture,” Thicke says. “We made this first album together. He was my executive producer. And I really just wanted the first album to be something that no one had ever heard before — originality and musicality was my No. 1 goal.”

That album, A Beautiful World , is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Thicke is honoring the project by putting out unreleased tracks: “High School Man” will be released on May 5; a Jadakiss-featured remix of his debut single, “When I Get You Alone,” will be out on May 12; and “Bittersweet” will drop on May 19, the same day the album’s deluxe edition will be available.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Thicke — who is a judge on Fox’s The Masked Singer and recently released a new single and music video with Yo Gotti called “Brown Liquor” — talks about writing for the King of Pop, turning a real-life bank robbery into a song , remembering late music executive Harrell and having his ex-wife and then-girlfriend, actress Paula Patton , appear on his debut album’s cover.

The songs that you and Brian McKnight made — where do they live? Are they on a hard drive somewhere?

After deciding not to release that album, were you feeling free when you were going into A Beautiful World ? Because that’s what it sounds like.

I think it was just years of growth that I went from being a teenager, at 16, and what happens over the next five years, from 16 to 21, is a lot. It’s a lot of new information. And I had a lot of new influences that I started to listen to. I listened to more Beatles and Queen and the Police, and I got into older catalogs like Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. And so that started to change my sonic desires.

At 23 years old I had a lot of experience in the studio writing and producing for other people. I was with Jordan Knight working on his album, and he introduced me to some of the best producers in the world: Raphael Saadiq, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Walter Afanasieff. I got to work with all these incredible different producers like Timbaland and be in sessions with these guys. By the time it was time to make my own album, I had a lot of information. I had years at university, you know?

Where were you when you first heard “When I Get You Alone” on the radio?

How many years did you spend growing your hair?

Some of the timeline is a little fuzzy 20 years later, but I remember starting my album and deciding I wouldn’t cut my hair until I heard it. And then I think about three years later is when I finally heard it, and the album was released, and the song was on the radio.

The music video is classic, with you riding your bike all around New York City.

It was the first time a white guy with long hair was ever on BET every day. And to be totally honest, BET supported me from the beginning. They played that video way more than any other outlet.

“Oh Shooter” opens the album — was that inspired by a real-life situation?

It was. I was in the bank when it got robbed. I was literally standing at the teller and guys came in with guns and said, “Get down on the floor.” So those lyrics ( he starts to sing ) are real and pretty much that story is word-for-word.

Where were you? How old were you? And were you scared?

And that’s why, at the end of the record, you’ll hear all the police cars, and the drums sound like guns being shot.

Lil Wayne reworked the song for his Tha Carter II album. How did that happen?

I was a huge fan of his “Go DJ” song. It blew my mind. And I’m telling all my friends, “This guy’s the next biggest thing.” And then out of the blue, out of nowhere, I get a call, “Lil Wayne loves your ‘Shooter’ song and wants to do something with it for his Carter II album.” I was like, “Absolutely.” So he ended up rapping in between all the places that I sang. He just picked all the other spots and rapped there. And it ended up being amazing and changed the path of my career. It was great.

A lyric from the title track “A Beautiful World” stood out to me. “And I don’t know if living is worth the time, ’cause sometimes I just don’t.” What was going through your head when you wrote that?

There’s a bittersweetness to the journey of life. And sometimes you just don’t feel like trying, or you don’t feel like giving. You just don’t feel like it. And then you’re reminded of what a beautiful world it is.

Let’s talk about shooting the album artwork cover. It’s a beautiful photo of Paula Patton. Take me through that shoot.

On “Vengas Conmigo” you are singing in English and Spanish, which is common now but not 20 years ago. Do you speak Spanish?

I speak a little bit of Spanish. I think it was, in that case, maybe the production style reminded me of some great Latin funk records, and there’s the Spanish guitar that we were playing with. So once I got to the chorus, I wanted to do something different from the other records, and I figured, “Let’s sing in Spanish and do something different.”

You shout-out Andre Harrell on the song and he’s obviously been such an important person and music executive in your life. How did he help guide your career?

Nobody had ever seen the possibilities of my abilities the way he did. I believed in myself. You have to have the core belief in yourself to even take a shot at this stuff. So I believed in myself, and then suddenly my friends started to believe, and then my lady believed, and then Andre came around and just said, “No, no, no, no, no. I don’t even think you realize how big you could be as an artist.” Because I still hadn’t released an album, so I was sitting on whatever talent I have. I was sitting on it. And that type of belief, that type of support, that type of, “No, you’re bigger than you think you are” — man, every artist could surely use that.

That was written right after 9/11. Andre was sitting with me, and I had this groove. Andre and I would love to sit down while I had instrumentals or grooves I was working on, and we’d like to talk about what people were feeling, what the streets were going through, what conversations he’s hearing at the dinner table, what women, his female friends, are saying, what his buddies are saying.

We would share perspective about what was happening right now. And when 9/11 happened, we sat down, and we talked about. That’s why the line, “War in these streets, no talk about peace, the dogs off the leash under pressure.” That was America’s response. And the chorus being, “But it’s never too late to get on the same side” was my idealistic desire, post-9/11, to stay away from more war and more carnage.

A Beautiful World wasn’t a best-selling album, but it has resonated with fans. How do you view it?

Some things are ahead of their time, some things are right on time. Maybe if it was way too successful, maybe I might’ve spun out of control. Maybe humility was very good for me. Maybe humility was very good for me because the second album was all about connecting as opposed to showing off.

When you started writing for other artists, was that a conscious choice?

And I still made records. To be honest, I still made records. I have a whole album actually, pre- A Beautiful World , that’s also very eclectic and artistic and very similar to the records on A Beautiful World . But the influence of Andre changed how my music sounded.

You co-wrote Michael Jackson’s “Fall Again,” which was recorded in 1999 but released on his box set The Ultimate Collection in 2004. Were you in the studio with him?

No, but it’s a good story. When Ricky Martin performed “A Cup of Life” (“La Copa De Vida”) on the Grammys and became a superstar the next day, Tommy Mottola called Walter Afanasieff and asked if he had a song for Ricky Martin and Madonna to do a duet because Madonna wanted to do a duet with Ricky apparently. This is what I was told.

You also wrote for two of the biggest debut albums — Christina Aguilera and Brandy’s first records. What was it like working with Christina for “When You Put Your Hands On Me” and Brandy for “Love Is on My Side” ?

Both of them were just vocal behemoths at such a young age. And Brandy was 14 and I was 16 when we cut and released that album, which was crazy. And I remember recording her vocals as a 16-year-old, and she’s 14. Pretty cool. And then with Christina, Ron Fair played us a demo when I was actually looking for a record deal. I didn’t really have the songs yet, but I went into a meeting and was looking for a new deal. And instead they pitched me Christina. And immediately my partner Pro Jay, who I’ve made all my music with for 25 years, we both were blown away by her voice. She came up to the studio, we did a couple songs, and we just all knew she was going to be a star. We just all knew.

How’s the new album you’re working on coming along?

I’m actually very excited because my house burned down in the Malibu fires four years ago, so we’ve been on the road and we’ve had two kids since then. And not having a home or a base has been challenging, so to finally be back in our property and be in our brand new home, and it’s built for the kids, and it’s built for me, it’s really nice. So I’ve been so creative again these last six months; just been really feeling the creative juices again and having a good time.

All About Robin Thicke's Dad, Late Actor Alan Thicke

Robin Thicke and his late dad Alan Thicke bonded over music when the singer was young

After actor Alan Thicke died suddenly in 2016, singer Robin Thicke lost one of his biggest supporters — but he never stopped feeling his dad’s influence.

"Every time I speak to my son Julian, I feel him because I'm saying the same things he told me," he told PEOPLE in 2021. "When I was young, I wanted to be a rebel because my dad was Mr. Good Guy. Now I just want to be as much like him as possible . In the end, all the advice he gave me was correct."

Robin was born to actors Alan and Gloria Loring, their second son after their eldest, Brennan. The two later divorced when Robin was young, but their musical influence had already piqued the young boy’s interest, and he decided to follow his parents into the entertainment industry.

Alan supported his son and even brought him on the Growing Pains set in 1991. When the then-13-year-old shared his hopes of a career with Entertainment Tonight during the visit, the actor highly praised Robin.

"I think that we have to feel flattered that are children want to follow in our footsteps as long as we don't push them that way," Alan said. "Turns out that he has a natural musical gift. He's good at it."

Here’s everything to know about Robin Thicke’s dad, late actor Alan Thicke.

He was a proud Canadian

Ron Galella/Ron Galella Collection/Getty

Alan was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada, on March 1, 1947, to mom Shirley "Joan" Isobel Marie Thicke and dad William Jeffrey Thicke.

The Hope & Gloria star was a proud Canadian and always championed other artists from his homeland, as Robin recalled in a 2015 story with Prestige Hong Kong .

“Any time a Canadian accomplishes anything or just pops up on the TV, he’s like 'Steve Nash MVP – a Canadian!' " Robin said.

When he received a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in Toronto in 2013, he said he was proud to be a Canadian entertainer and hoped “part of that will be what I'm remembered for,” according to CBC News .

"It's part of my identity, and a unique thing I carry with me is my Canadian-ness and we're good folk,” he added.

He was known for Growing Pains and composing TV theme songs

ABC Photo Archives/Disney General Entertainment Content/Getty

Alan became a household name while starring in the sitcom Growing Pains from 1985 to 1992.

He played patriarch Dr. Jason Seaver, a psychiatrist who worked out of an office at the family home, alongside his fellow cast members Joanna Kerns, Kirk Cameron, Jeremy Miller and a young Leonardo DiCaprio in the show’s last season.

He was also a musician and composed TV theme songs with his first wife, Loring, including the iconic opening songs for Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life and the original theme to Wheel of Fortune .

He had three sons

During his 14-year-long marriage to Days of Our Lives actress and singer Loring, Alan became a dad for the first time when their son Brennan was born on March 10, 1974. A few years later, the couple welcomed Robin on March 10, 1977.

After Alan and Loring divorced in 1984, the actor married Gina Tolleson, a model and beauty queen who won Miss World, in 1994. Alan and Gina celebrated the arrival of their son Carter on July 10, 1997.

The late actor was a supportive dad to his kids, even if he wasn’t always a disciplinarian.

“My kids will all tell you that I was way too liberal, too indulging, too casual with them,” Alan told the Toronto Star in 2014.

The actor explained that his parenting style was more “casual,” not because he “didn’t care." Alan continued, "Casual in that you always want to kind of trust them and hope that they’re smarter than teenagers really are.”

He died while playing hockey with his youngest son

On Dec. 13, 2016, Alan was playing hockey with his son then-19-year-old son Carter when he complained of chest pains and an ambulance was dispatched to care for him.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Alan died at the age of 69 of a “ ruptured aorta ” and a “standard type A aortic dissection,” according to his official death certificate obtained by PEOPLE.

Carter later recalled the events leading up to his father’s death and the last words that were said.

“The ambulance came and the paramedics had stabilized him and everything seemed fine,” he told Entertainment Tonight in 2017. “I got to give him a hug and said, ‘I love you,’ and that was the last time I saw him.”

“He was like the perfect dad ,” Carter added.

His death changed Robin’s life

Denise Truscello/WireImage

Years after his father’s death, Robin has opened up about the turmoil he felt at the time and how it changed his life for the better. The Masked Singer judge revealed that his son Julian helped him heal from the loss.

"I wasn't in a good place when he passed, and I wasn't in a better place right after," he told PEOPLE in 2021. "However, a few months later, I decided to dedicate my time to raising my son, and that really was a big turn for me. Instead of focusing on my music, I focused on my son. That's how I got through that period."

Robin, who shares his eldest son with ex-wife Paula Patton and is now dad to three more kids with fiancée April Love Geary , also realized he needed to step up and be there for his younger brother.

"When my father passed, I became the patriarch of my family . My young 20-year-old brother, he needed a big brother, and it just felt like now I had to take it onto my shoulders to be a much better, more focused, man than I was before," Robin explained in a 2019 interview with Steve Harvey .

Robin wrote a song for Alan after his death

Rich Polk/Getty

The singer remembered Alan in a song on his 2021 album On Earth, and in Heaven . At the time, he told PEOPLE that the song “That's What Love Can Do” is “about the passing of the torch of my father to me and the kind of man I want to be.”

The Grammy nominated artist said the song was inspired by a metaphor an old friend of Alan's told Robin after his death.

"After my father's death, I remember a friend of his said, 'A big tree has fallen.' That's what my dad was: the big tree," he said. "Now here I am, this medium-size tree, and I've got to grow my branches and protect everybody. Every day I try to make him proud of me."

Robin often posts tributes to Alan on social media

After Alan died in 2016, Robin began remembering his dad regularly on Instagram, often posting sweet throwback shots and celebrating him on important days.

“6 years ago today a big tree fell down. We miss your smile, your big hugs and hilarious punch lines! Love you Pops! Miss you every day! Long live Alan Thicke!” Robin wrote alongside an old headshot of Alan in a December 2022 Instagram post .
