Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. 4. Kanazawa

5. Hiroshima

Most travellers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets. 

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colourful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere. 

If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

• Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Do I need a visa to travel to Japan?

Under current restrictions, a visa is required to enter Japan as a tourist. We recommend you apply for your visa no later than one month before your departure date. Please contact your local consulate or embassy for more information.

Is tipping customary in Japan?

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my mobile while in Japan?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your mobile phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Japan?

In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.

Can I drink the water in Japan?

Drinking water from taps in Japan is considered safe. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Major cities often have water fountains in train stations.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Japan?

Major credit cards are accepted by some stores; however, Japan is still very much a cash culture and as such, some places may not accept credit cards. Ensure you carry enough cash to cover purchases.

What is ATM access like in Japan?

ATMs are common in Japan but unfortunately many of them don't accept foreign-issued cards. However, you can access cash from non-Japanese bank accounts via the Cirrus and Maestro systems at all post office ATMs around the country, as well as ATMs at 7-Eleven convenience stores.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

March, April and May are excellent months to holiday in Japan and, as a result, are the busiest. The weather is usually fine and beautiful cherry blossoms are in full bloom. September, October and November are also great months to visit Japan on holidays, as the days are warm but not humid and the autumn colours are out. Winter, while cold, offers great conditions for skiing, snowboarding, going to snow festivals and admiring the stunning mountain scenery. The summer months can be quite humid, but tourist areas are generally quieter and there are many fun festivals and fireworks displays to enjoy.

What is the weather like in Japan?

• Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 10 to 20°C, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
• Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 21 to 32°C depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
• Autumn (September to November): temperatures range from 7 to 20°C. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.  
• Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 0 to 15°C. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travellers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!). 

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

LGBTQIA+ travellers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalised yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

Is Japan accessible for travellers with disabilities?

That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travellers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make travelling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travellers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots. 

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf. 

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay. 

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

Having a basic understanding of the language and culture of the country you're visiting can go a long way when it comes to, not only communicating efficiently but your overall trip experience as well. Some common phrases you need to learn are:

What religions do they practice in Japan?

Japan is a very seasonal destination with each time of year bringing a range of highlights to different parts of the country. For example, during the months of January (in the south) and May (in the north), cherry blossom season occurs; the blossoms are in full bloom and sweep across the nation, blanketing each area in a soft pink colour. In the autumn months, October to December, another seasonal phenomenon occurs, the autumn leaves. Warm tones of red, orange and gold ginkgo and maple leaves sweep across the country, creating a warm and cosy atmosphere. Throughout other times of the year you’ll find varied climates; the north can experience very cold temperatures with snow in destinations like Sapporo, whereas the south will have you wandering in the warmth of the sun in places like Osaka. Japan is actually very comparable to the UK when it comes to costs. In main cities like Tokyo, you may find it is a little more expensive than in the quieter, more rural areas. Restaurants and bars may be slightly more costly but not extortionate. If you head outside of the cities, you’ll find that prices are lower for things like food, drink and shopping. However, Japan as a whole is definitely budget friendly.

It can be quite unnerving travelling to a new country even if you have visited Asia before, but Japan is a very welcoming place, making it easy to travel around. No matter what part of the country you are visiting, we will always ensure that you have every detail you’ll need to make your way from place to place. If you’ve never travelled to Japan before, the language barrier may be a little daunting, however, this is never a major problem. Often, signs are displayed in the Roman alphabet and the locals are always happy to help if needed.

Japan is the ultimate destination for exploration, be that independently or with a guide. If you like having an expert at your side for the duration of your trip, we would highly recommend having a guide for your tour. They’ll be able to take you to the iconic sights as well as the hidden gems with no troubles as well as share their passion, culture and love for their country. A guide will also be able to communicate with you throughout your trip, whether that be to talk about the history of a place or to suggest a great restaurant! Japan can of course be done independently but we would still recommend a guide or local to be on hand to point you in the right direction or help recommend where to go, but apart from this, you’re good to go on your own discovery!

Day 1 UK - Tokyo

Today, let the excitement start to build as you board your flight to Tokyo.

Day 2 Tokyo

You’ll arrive in Tokyo this evening where we’ll transfer you to your hotel, as you drive towards the city, the iconic Tokyo Tower can be seen lit up on the skyline. After time to settle in, why not head out for stroll to get your bearings. You could visit the bright lights of Tokyo in the Shinjuku district where there are a range of restaurants offering traditional Japanese cuisine.

Day 3 Tokyo

Today a guided tour will take you to explore some of Tokyo’s incredible sights. The first stop of the day is in the tranquil setting of a 170 acre, man-made forest. The Meiji Jengu Shrine and great torii gate is dedicated to the first emperor of modern Japan. Walk along the peaceful, shaded paths and take time to watch people as they say their own private prayers.

Our next spot is the district of Asakusa, where you'll walk down the vibrant Nakamise shopping street bustling with stalls selling an array of clothing, souvenirs and delicious local food. The walkway leads us to the Sensoji Buddhist temple – your senses are filled with the aroma of incense, and the sounds of money being tossed into the temples saisen-bako. You’ll have some time here to explore at your own pace and enjoy a bite to eat. Perhaps you’ll revisit one or two of the stalls selling dango or karaage or venture to one of the small restaurants hidden in one of the side-streets.

In the afternoon we make a stop close to the Imperial Palace, the main residence of the Emperor of Japan, as well as a visit the Tokyo Tower to enjoy views across the city. After time back at the hotel to freshen up, we'll take a short walk to a local restaurant and enjoy a welcome dinner.

Day 4 Hakone & Mount Fuji

Today we journey outside of the city limits as we venture to Hakone, the gateway to Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain. And, it isn’t long after leaving Tokyo before you cast your first glimpse of her snow-capped peak. We’ll drive up to the Fujinomiya 5th Station, located at 2400m above sea level for not only a closer look at Mount Fuji from her southern slope but spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

We’ll then take a short drive to Lake Ashi. The lake formed thousands of years ago in the crater of a dormant volcano, here we'll take a tranquil and scenic cruise across its waters. If the weather is clear, you’ll enjoy further views of Mount Fuji. The views here are breathtakingly beautiful and we'll take a cable-car ride over the Owakudani Valley to admire views of mountains, sulphur hot springs and crystal-clear Lake. At the hot springs, you'll have a chance to try the local delicacy of 'black eggs'. Cooked in the sulphur, eating just one egg is believed to add seven years to your life!

Day 5 Tokyo - Takayama

Today we leave Tokyo behind and head to Takayama in the Japanese Alps. We’ll first drive to Matsumoto Castle, it's the country's oldest five-tiered wooden castle and has been designated a National Treasure of Japan. Step inside to explore the each of the floors taking the steep wooden stairs to the observation deck on the top floor. You’ll have time in Matsumoto to explore at leisure. Walk towards the river and watch koi swimming in the clear waters, or walk along Nawate shopping street where small shops sell local wares.

In the afternoon, we stop at Daio Wasabi Farm to see how Japanese horseradish is grown. The farm has a number of large fields where the wasabi plants grow and we will admire them from specially designed walking trails. To round off your visit, why not treat yourself to a wasabi-flavoured ice cream!

The drive from Matsumoto to Takayama is a long one, but this road takes you into the heart of the Hida Mountains along winding roads that pass through mountain tunnels and alongside rivers so clear you can see the rocky bed below – the panoramic views are breath-taking.

After arriving at our hotel in Takayama, we’ll meet for a dinner of local cuisine.

Day 6 Takayama

This morning, we start with a visit to the Miyagawa morning market, where you can see and perhaps even sample the region's exotic fruit and vegetables. There is free time to explore this town and it is full of surprises. Affectionally called “little Kyoto” the old town has been beautifully preserved – the distinctive black facades of buildings lining narrow streets are full of museums, galleries, restaurants and craft shops. You could even visit the Matsuri no Mori festival museum or Historical Government House.

This afternoon we’ll visit one of Japan's most scenic areas Shirakawago, located along the Shokawa River. This UNESCO listed site showcases a rare type of architecture called Gassho-zukuri. Walk along the suspension bridge that crosses Sho River and wander through the small village. You’ll have time to wander through the site at your own pace. Perhaps you’ll step inside the Wada House, the largest traditional gassho-style farmhouse in the village. Just behind this house is a path that takes you up to an observation deck – here you’ll enjoy wonderful views of pine-covered mountains and centuries-old thatch-roofed farmhouses.

Day 7 Takayama - Kyoto

A journey by train this morning takes us to Nagoya, where we board one of Japan's famous shinkansen, a Bullet Train, bound for Kyoto.

We'll start the sightseeing as soon as we arrive in historic Kyoto. It is a city filled with fascinating temples, ancient buildings and picturesque gardens. We’ll start with a visit to Nijo Castle, built in 1603 for the first Shogun of the Edo Period. It’s beautiful gardens are surrounded by imposing stone walls, but step inside the castle to navigate through walkways that “chirp” with each step and tatami rooms are decorated with intricate paintings and sliding doors.

The next stop is Sanjusangendo, the longest wooden temple in Japan. It’s what’s inside that is truly captivating. Walk through the large wooden doors and be wowed 1001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. It is thought that if you look closely at the faces, you will find one that resembles the person you long to meet.

This evening is free for you to explore at leisure. If you’re looking to see authentic Geiko, head to the Gion district at dusk for best chance to see these beautifully dressed women.

Day 8 Kyoto

We’ll discover even more of Kyoto’s sights today. We start by heading to the beautiful district of Arashiyama today, where a rickshaw ride through the town and into a bamboo forest promises to be a serene experience. Sit back and enjoy the sight of the towering stalks swaying gently in the wind and casting shadows on the path.

We’ll then head to Kinkakuji – the Golden pavilion. In the grounds of the Rokuon-ji temple, overlooking a large pond with orange koi swimming in its waters, is the unique three-storey structure. The top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf and glisten in the sunlight. Follow the path through the gardens, past the pavilion, towards statues where visitors throw coins for luck.

A sushi-making demonstration promises to be a great experience as you learn the art of rolling the rice and creating mini masterpieces of raw fish (vegetarian options available). You’ll get to enjoy your dishes before we head to Nara this afternoon. This historic city is where we'll find the Todaiji Temple, one of the most famous in Japan, and the Deer Park with its hundreds of free-roaming deer - you can even purchase crackers to feed them. We'll also visit Kasuga Taisha, the most celebrated shrine in Nara.

Day 9 Kyoto - at Leisure

Today has been left free for you to explore Kyoto at leisure. You might choose to head to the Kyoto Tower for panoramic views of the city, and see the Gion district where you partake in a tea ceremony. Kyoto is the birthplace of this traditional ceremony and there are a number of places which offer you a chance to experience it for yourself.

Perhaps you’d like to visit more of the unique temples and shrines in the area – at Fushimi Inari and find not one or two, but thousands of vermilion torii gates that sit close together and straddle a network of paths that lead into the forest at the base of Mount Inari.

Or perhaps, if you fancy a spot of retail therapy, head to Downtown Kyoto where you’ll find department stores and a wonderful food market. In the evening, make sure you venture to Kyoto station, an unspoken highlight of the city and home to an array of restaurants, galleries, a sky garden and a staircase with crowd-pleasing illuminations.

Day 10 Kyoto - Hiroshima

Today, we’ll take another shinkansen and venture south to Hiroshima. On arrival, we’ll take a short ferry ride to Miyajima Island where you can see deer roaming around the area. Unsurprisingly, it’s not the wildlife that it the big draw to this island – here is where you will find the “floating” o-torii gate of the Itsukushima Shrine. Both the shrine and the gate are unique for being built over water and therefore seeming to float during high tide – a time at which they are perhaps their most beautiful. We’ll enjoy some free time here – why not take the short walk up to the Daishoin temple, have a drink in the islands brewery or simply sit on the waterfront and take in the tranquil surroundings.

Back on the mainland, Hiroshima is infamous as the target of the first-ever atomic bomb, dropped by the US at the end of the Second World War. The Atomic Bomb Dome stood at the epicentre of the devastating bomb blast and has been preserved as a lasting reminder of that tragic event. You'll visit the remains of this building and walk through the Peace Memorial Park, an area of open land dedicated to the promotion of world peace to see the Cenotaph for the victims of the Atomic Bomb, and visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

Day 11 Hiroshima - Osaka

Osaka is the final destination of your tour, so take this morning to relax and admire the view of Japan from the window of your shinkansen. On arrival in the city, we’ll visit the Floating Garden Observatory at the top of the Umeda Sky Building – it’s the perfect stop for lunch, whether you choose to stay at the top and enjoy the incredible views across the city, or head to the lower floor where a food court has been designed to recreate the atmosphere of the city in the early 12th century. Our last stop is Osaka Castle surrounded by a moat and lush gardens, this five-storey castle has a history dating back more than 400 years, a museum spread across each floor details its past and cultural significance. Take an elevator or the stairs to the top floor which provides even more wonderful views of Osaka.

Day 12 Osaka - UK

This morning there is time to explore Osaka at leisure – walk down to the river to take a boat tour or simply pick up one or two last minute souvenirs.

This afternoon, we’ll transfer to Osaka airport for our return flight to the UK.

From Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka and beyond, your tour of Japan comes to an end as you arrive back in the UK.

We had an amazing holiday. Japan was all we had hoped for. The group worked so well, we all got on and became good friends. Shingo, our guide was totally great. He was so pleasant and helpful. His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!

Great trip Our guide, Juno was amazing. The weather was super hot but he managed to keep us comfortable as we moved very quickly on public transport from site to site. Juno always had good well-priced meal suggestions and was super organized and cheerful. The hotels were very good or better. The hotel in Tokyo was noisy because it was near a hospital. A lightweight suitcase, with excellent wheels would be my suggestion for luggage versus a duffle bag Hiroshima was the most moving part of the trip Hakone was the most fun and I wish we could have stayed a bit longer. We stayed a few extra days to go to Disneyland, and I would recommend staying near Disney property versus downtown Tokyo. We could’ve used a midday break and then return to the park for the evening fireworks but it was super hot and we pooped out before closing.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Japan

I had a fabulous 10-day around Japan. Although it was a very packed tour this was exactly what was needed to see all the highlights of Japan in 10 days. A particular highlight was the sushi making class in Tokyo, this was a lot of fun. I also loved the temple stay, it was such a good opportunity to stay here, and one I couldn’t have organised myself. I owe a lot to Hayley our tour guide who made the whole experience very enjoyable, she was always very energetic and up for lots of fun. She was extremely organised with timings on travel days and so giving, she always put the group first whether that was meal times, travel days or in regard to accommodation. I had a wonderful time and I owe a lot to my tour group, the organisation of the tour and our amazing guide, Hayley.

Japan was so fun! A looooooot of free time so do you researches about what to do and visit in every city. Would have love more ''organised'' activities (like a dinner every night with the group,...). Compared to other G Adventures tour I did in the past, I felt that this group was less stick together since there was only a few group activities.

Canada , famed for its friendly people with a knack for warm hospitality, is the ideal place for a lone globetrotter to switch off and get back to nature.

Th world's second biggest country balances cosmopolitan cities with unspoilt, remote wilderness. You’ll be greeted with trendy bars in Toronto and the urban oasis of Stanley Park in waterfront Vancouver , while road trips across the North American giant take you through expansive landscapes, mountain peaks and dazzlingly blue lakes.

America still has the world's busiest airport

• New data on the world's busiest airports in 2023 reveals the latest trends in global travel. 
• 8.5 billion passengers traveled by plane last year, almost marking a return to pre-pandemic levels.   
• Airports in Asia and the Middle East became busier, but the US has once again clinched the top spot. 

International travel is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, according to the just-released list of the world's busiest airports in 2023.

8.5 billion passengers traveled globally by plane last year — up from 7 billion passengers in 2022 .

The rise in air travel marks a recovery to 93.8% of levels in 2019 before the world shut down, according to preliminary data published by the Airports Council International (ACI), a trade association that includes 2,600 airports worldwide.

Increasing travel to airports in Asia and the Middle East was one of the key trends to emerge from the data, with Dubai International Airport jumping from the fifth to the second busiest airport in the world.

Airports in India, Japan, and Turkey also made it into the top 10 and were some of the biggest movers in terms of annual gains in passenger numbers.

As the world's largest domestic market for flights , US airports still make up five of the busiest airports in the world, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retaining its No. 1 position.

Despite tough global economic conditions, there was "a growing inclination towards travel," Luis Felipe de Oliveira, the ACI's world director general, said in a press release.

"Airports continue to demonstrate their resilience and adaptability amidst the challenges posed by the ever-evolving landscape of global travel," said Oliveira.

Here's a closer look at the top 10 busiest airports in the world.

10. Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, India

Passengers: 72.2 million

2022 ranking: 9th

Delhi's main airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport, saw a 21.4% increase in year-on-year traffic. While it has dropped a place this year, Delhi has grown significantly as a transport hub since 2019, when it sat at number 19 in the rankings.

9. Chicago O’Hare International Airport, USA

Passengers: 73.9 million

2022 ranking: 4th

Travel through Chicago O'Hare jumped by 8.1% throughout 2023. O'Hare is a hub airport for domestic travel, particularly for United and American Airlines flights. It is also a focus city for low-cost rivals Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

8. Los Angeles International Airport, USA

Passengers: 75.1 million

2022 ranking: 6th

Travel through LAX was up 13.8% in 2023, however, compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, passengers at the West Coast airport decreased by 14.8% — the largest decrease of any airport in the top ten rankings. LAX is a hub for a number of carriers, including Alaska Airlines, United, American, and Delta. But domestic travel at the airport shrunk dramatically as airlines cut the number of flights following a series of meltdowns in 2022.

7. Istanbul Airport, Turkey

Passengers: 76 million

2022 ranking: 7th

Passenger numbers at Turkey's Istanbul airport have increased by 18.3%, making it the only transit hub to keep level with its previous ranking in the top 10. Notably, traffic through the airport has jumped by 45.7% since 2019.

6. Denver International Airport, USA

Passengers: 77.8 million

2022 ranking: 3rd

Denver Airport has dropped down several places on the list but still shows strong signs of growth in terms of passengers. In the last year traffic through the Colorado airport was up 12.3%, and it has also grown 12.8% from pre-pandemic levels.

5. Tokyo Haneda International Airport, Japan

Passengers: 78.7 million

2022 ranking: 16th

Japan's Tokyo Haneda Airport saw the largest increase in traffic by far, with passenger numbers surging by 55.1%. Some of that jump can be explained by a lag in tourism as Japan only reopened its borders in late 2022. Despite the jump, Tokyo Haneda is still 7.9% under its 2019 level of traffic. This January the airport made headlines after a fatal collision involving a Japan Airlines plane and a coastguard vehicle killed five people.

4. London Heathrow, UK

Passengers: 79.2 million

2022 ranking: 8th

Travel through the UK's largest airport shot up by 218% in 2022 and has once again made strong gains throughout 2023, jumping by a slightly more modest 28.5%. The airport has credited travel from the Asia-Pacific region as a major factor in its increased passenger numbers. It hopes to supersede its pre-pandemic level of traffic in 2024 and hit a record 81.4 million passengers, the airport said in a report published in December.

3. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, USA

Passengers: 81.8 million

2022 ranking: 2nd

Dallas/Fort Worth airport , known as DFW, is American Airlines' busiest hub and the departure city for many of the airline's international flights. Last year traffic through the airport jumped by 11.4%.

2. Dubai International Airport, UAE

Passengers: 87 million

2022 ranking: 5th

Dubai took the number 2 ranking in the list for the first time, thanks to a significant 31.7% increase in passenger numbers. Dubai's new position reflects the heavy investment that has gone into the aviation industry and boosting tourism in the region.

Passengers: 104.7 million

2022 ranking: 1st

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport comes in at No. 1 as the busiest airport in the world, a position it has held for more than two decades. In 2023, the Atlanta airport saw an 11.7% increase in passenger numbers.
