Starting July 11, the guys will play a five-pack of shows in support of Swindell alongside steady songsmith Dylan Scott.

Made up of Colton Pack, Garrett Nichols and Zach Beeken, Restless Road’s harmony-driven vocals and thoughtful lyrics are front and center on their debut 2023 album, Last Rodeo .

Restless Road Last Rodeo Tour

Stops in Europe and college towns across the US Southeast have been added

Country music trio Restless Road has announced additional dates to their headline Last Rodeo Tour . With added stops in London and various college towns across the southeast such as Athens, Georgia, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the tour will hit a total of 23 cities. The tour stops in Music City this evening (Fri, Jan 12th) for a show at Brooklyn Bowl. Restless Road will also return to the UK this spring for the C2C: Country to Country music festival.

Made up of Colton Pack, Garrett Nichols, and Zach Beeken, Restless Road’s standout harmony-driven vocals are front and center on their debut album. The project features 18 tracks including the title track, and recently released songs “ You Don’t Have To Love Me ,” “ Roll Tide Roll ,” “ I Don’t Wanna Be That Guy ,” “ Sundown Somewhere ,” “ On My Way ,” their No. 1 SiriusXM hit “Growing Old With You” and fan favorite “Bar Friends.”

Contrary to the title of the album, Last Rodeo is just the beginning of the group. The title track is about resilience and staying focused on their goals, which this album is proof of. As Colton, Garrett and Zach have grown together, Last Rodeo encapsulates their journey through every twist and turn. With Colton married, Garrett currently engaged, and Zach single, the songs incorporate many stories about all different stages of life and love.

Restless Road Talks "Last Rodeo," Says The Dream Has Always Been To Be The Biggest Band In Country Music

restless road tour 2024

Country trio Restless Road admits that although the group has accomplished some enviable feats since they released their self-titled debut EP in 2020, members Colton Pack, Garrett Nichols, and Zach Beeken admit they started 2023 with some regrets.

"We had said we've gotten to do a lot of pretty incredible things, but if it all ended tomorrow, what would be the one thing we regretted," Pack recalled. "It was not putting out a debut album. We just got to the point where we'd been putting out singles for a while, getting to test the waters with songs on tour and seeing what works. This year we decided we had a lot we wanted to say."

That was in January. Friday, Restless Road released its first full-length album, "Last Rodeo." The 18-song collection is loaded with songs co-written by band members as well as some of the most popular artists and songwriters in country music, including Lady A's Charles Kelley, Devin Dawson, Cole Swindell and more. Songs on the album include streaming monsters "Growing Old With You," "Sundown Somewhere" and "Last Rodeo," which together have accumulated more than 50 million streams.

"We want to give people the chance to really get to know Restless Road on a deeper level and hear our story and all the different sides of us as one full body of work," Pack said.

After the band decided to prioritize recording an entire album, they took the next three to four months to write songs for the project.

"You don't ever know how it's going to work out," Pack said of songwriting. "I mean, you're just being creative, so you don't know if you're going to get a great song that day or not get a great song. But I feel like we really got lucky and just wrote so many songs back to back that we felt like were great songs. Honestly, normally that doesn't happen that way."

On the heels of being on the road for two years straight, Beeken called the opportunity to focus on songwriting "a big breath of fresh air."

"When we got home, I just think we were so ready to write," he explained. "We had lived so much life. A lot of us had been through a lot of different things, so we kind of had a lot of stuff in the tank to draw from, and it just kind of allowed the songs to pour out really fast. I'm kind of an all-in person. So, knowing that we had two months, I was really excited."

Beeken said he "made songwriting his only purpose in life all day every day." The group wrote songs during the day, made demos at night and repeated the process seven days a week.

"It was really intense, but it was really fun to get lost in songwriting because I think we ended up coming out with the best songs we've ever written and songs that I think we felt personally connected to more than any of the songs in the past," Beeken continued. "We've all written hundreds of songs up to this point, but the last 20 songs that we wrote, I feel like we really connect to, and we really try to challenge ourselves to make them as authentic as possible."

After the bandmates wrote and collected the batch of songs for the project, they had to get into the studio and record them.

Restless Road called the album "Last Rodeo," but members explain it's a partial line from the song "Last Rodeo." The complete lyric is: "This ain't my Last Rodeo."

"We thought that when we were picking the title, that song said everything we wanted to say about our journey," Nichols said. "We started this band when we were 18 years old. You have a dream. The dream has been the same since the very beginning. We thought anything was possible. Sitting here today, I feel like we've proven that anything is possible.

Beeken added: "The dream from day one was to be the biggest band in country music. We're not there yet, but we're on our way. It's still the goal today."

With the new album now in stores, Restless Road is preparing to hit the road again in 2024.

Tickets for the tour will go on sale 10 a.m. Friday, October 27, with various pre-sales starting on Tuesday. For more information on where to purchase tickets, please visit www.restlessroad.com .

Tim McGraw sings from the crowd with fans nearby.

Tim McGraw’s 2024 tour name is a bit misleading.

The country icon dubbed this year’s trek the ‘Standing Room Only Tour,’ but after doing a bit of research, our team found quite a few last-minute seats available for all 38 remaining shows on the North American run with special guests Carly Pearce and Restless Road .

That includes his big gigs at Buffalo’s KeyBank Center  on Saturday, May 4, and Long Island’s UBS Arena  on Thursday, May 9.

And if you want seats — not standing room only passes (!) — to see the hitmaker perform bangers like “I Like It, I Love It,” “Highway Don’t Care,” “Something Like That” and tracks from his 2023 album “Standing Room Only” at one of his many, many shows live, we’re here to help.

At the time of publication, our team found some tickets going for as low as $21 before fees on Vivid Seats.

While that price is a bit of an outlier, other shows have seats starting anywhere from $27 to $116 before fees.

Curious how much it will cost you to see the “1883” star boot scoot and boogie live at the concert closest to you?

We’ve got all the information you need and more about Tim McGraw’s 2024 ‘Standing Room Only Tour’ below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

A complete calendar including tour dates, venues, and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found here:

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Tim McGraw set list

With a career spanning over 30 years, McGraw has a sizable catalog to pick and choose from when it comes to what he performs at live shows.

01.) “How Bad Do You Want It” 02.) “Something Like That” 03.) “Down on the Farm” 04.) “Just to See You Smile” 05.) “Southern Girl” 06.) “Hey Whisky” 07.) “7500 OBO” 08.) “Hold On to It” 09.) “Over and Over” (Nelly cover) 10.) “Shotgun Rider” 11.) “Where the Green Grass Grows” 12.) “Standing Room Only” 13.) “One of Those Nights” 14.) “Felt Good on My Lips” 15.) “Real Good Man” 16.) “Truck Yeah” 17.) “I Like It, I Love It”

18.) “Live Like You Were Dying”

Tim McGraw new music

In late August 2023, McGraw’s 16th solo album  “Standing Room Only”  hit shelves.

“As an artist, I always want to dig deeper and get better every time I make a new record…and I really believe this is one of the best projects we’ve made,” McGraw shared via press release.

“I’ve been working on this album since 2020, and this collection of songs are some of the most emotional, thought-provoking, and life-affirming music I’ve ever recorded.”

You can hear the 13-track record in its entirety  here .

Since the album’s release, he’s released a six-song EP, a four-track acoustic mini-album, and a single with Pitbull.

Nashville notes: Restless Road’s 2024 tour, Maggie Rose joins Big Loud Records

Warren Zeiders  is hitting the road for his Pretty Little Poison 2024 headlining tour. The 24-date trek kicks off February 2 in Mankato, Minnesota, and will wrap in Montreal, Canada, on March 30. ABOUT NATHANIEL RATELIFF & THE NIGHT SWEATS:

Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats are one of the most recognizable forces in contemporary rock ’n’ roll. Born from Denver rock clubs, the band now boasts platinum and gold-certified records within their catalog of three studio LPs, two EPs, and a live album. As described by Rolling Stone , “Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats make a damn good argument for why folk-soul is so important.”

Since their 2015 self-titled debut the band has established a reputation as the rare generational band who balances ecstatic live shows with engrossing and widely acclaimed rich records. NPR Music exhorts, “Rateliff isn’t simply resurrecting the ghost of R&B past like some garden-variety neo-soul necromancer: He’s out to shake the sheets, sermonize and get downright elemental.”

Their iconic live performances are wide ranging and include revving up stadium crowds for The Rolling Stones to sold out arenas to appearing on Saturday Night Live and NPR ’s Tiny Desk . As the LA Times raves, “The soul-R&B-rock collective…ranks as one of the most thrilling arrivals of recent years, its reputation stoked considerably by the group’s incendiary live shows.” Rateliff has seen widespread acclaim from critics and musicians alike, as Robert Plant recently named Rateliff a leader of the next generation of greats. “He is one of these guys that will just carry the torch. A Moscow Free Walking Tour of the Iconic Red Square

Updated March 10th, 2020

This post might contain affiliate links. That means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, if you buy through my site. I appreciate your support of my site.

No visit to Moscow, Russia is complete unless you take a walk around the famous Red Square and see the iconic sights of the city. One of the best ways to see all the famous landmarks in Moscow and learn a little something about them too is on a free Moscow walking tour through the Red Square.

Continue reading for a sneak peek at what you will see on your free tour in Moscow and for tips on both the tour and visiting the sights. Make sure to save some time during your trip to go inside of the magnificent buildings because you will not be going in the buildings during the tour.

The State Historical Museum

Moscow State Historical Museum

The Moscow free walking tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum . You can’t miss this massive red building. The museum’s interior is almost as spectacular as the artifacts you can see within. Read my post dedicated to the museum here to find out more on what you can see and tips for visiting. Admission is free with the Moscow City Pass .

The Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin

Behind the walls of the Kremlin lie the working offices of Russian’s government and president. When visiting the Kremlin you can see the Armory Chamber, Cathedral Square, the Patriach’s Palace and many more cathedrals. You definitely want to buy tickets ahead of time so you avoid the long-lines. You can get free admission with the Moscow City Pass . It’s also worth it to take a guided tour if you don’t speak Russian so you have more of an understanding of what you are seeing.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

Moscow's St. Basil's Cathedral

If asked to conquer up an image of Moscow, St. Basil’s Cathedral might just be the most likely image you picture. The cathedral has a museum that you can visit at a later time. You can buy tickets at the ticket kiosk outside the cathedral or receive free admission with the Moscow City Pass .

Moskva River

Moskva River

Next up on the tour is the Moskva River which runs through the center of Moscow. A cruise on the Moskva River is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

GUM Shopping Mall

Who would think a mall would be one of Moscow’s most well-known attractions? GUM shopping mall across from the Kremlin makes up one of the four sides of the Red Square. The stores might be a bit too pricey for shopping, but the gorgeous interior is worth a visit. If that doesn’t convince you, the mall has some of the best ice cream! GUM is the only building you go inside during the free walking tour. There are pay bathrooms you can use while you have a few minutes of free time.

Kazan Cathedral

Moscow Kazan Cathedral

Located on the northeast corner of the Red Square, the Kazan Cathedral is another impressive dome-shaped building in Moscow that is also an active place of worship. Entering the cathedral is allowed, but remember to be respectful if people are worshipping.

Bolshoi Theater

Moscow Bolshoi Theater

Contrary to the previous buildings, the Bolshoi Theater isn’t along one of the four sides of the Red Square. Located a few minutes away, the theater is one of the best theaters in the world. Make sure to come back for a guided tour of the inside or make reservations far ahead of time to attend a ballet or opera.

Alexander Gardens

Moscow Alexander Gardens

The tour ends near the Alexander Gardens , a free public park located along the western Kremlin walls. The garden’s green lawns, sculptures and water fountains offer a nice place to take a stroll or relax a bit after some busy sightseeing.

Moscow Red Square

You can visit all these sites on your own, but the best part of doing the Moscow free tour is that you learn more information and have the potential to meet new people!

During my tour I started to talk to a woman from Malaysia and she invited me to join her and her friends for a Russian meal afterwards. It’s these little impromptu meetings and opportunities that I love most about traveling and add more to the sightseeing experience. While I was a little hesitant about going to the tour myself I told myself it would be a great opportunity to possibly meet new people. I love when things work out like that!

If you have already seen the iconic sights of the Red Square and are looking for other things to do in Moscow check out my What to Do in Moscow post that gives more off-the beaten track things to do in Moscow!

Moscow Free Walking Tour Visiting Information

Moscow Free Walking Tours

How to Get There

The Moscow Free Walking Tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum (a large red building). The website shows a map with the exact meeting point.

To get to the red square area you can take the blue 3 metro line to the Ploshchad Revolyutsii stop, or the green 2 line to the Teatralnaya station or the red 1 line to the Okhotny Ryad station. For more on how to use the metro read my Moscow Metro Guide .

Tours every day at 10:30am – 1pm in English

If you need a toilet before the start of the tour the Okhotny Ryad and GUM shopping malls are both close to the start of the tour. You will need to pay to use the toilets. There is a quick break mid-way through the tour at the GUM shopping mall where you can use the toilet if needed.

During the mid-way break in the tour you can buy some ice cream at the GUM shopping mall. There aren’t many other options or time for anything else. After the tour there are a lot of restaurants in the area. There are a couple of Varenichnaya №1 locations nearby if you would like some authentic Russian food. Their speciality is Russian dumplings. Another classic choice nearby is Grand Cafe Dr. Jhivago. While you can try traditional Russian foods like borscht and Olivier Salad, you may need a reservation. GUM has several restaurants, including a couple of buffets upstairs.

Recommendations

While I would start off your visit to Moscow with a tour of the Red Square, make sure to come back to each place to tour the inside. If you are visiting several sights consider buying the Moscow City Pass  to save money on admissions.

Other Tour Options

Another company  Moscow Free Tour  does a similar free walking tour in the Red Square. Check the site for the details on the starting point and times. If you prefer a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to St. Basil’s Cathedral included check out this tour . For a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to the Kremlin included you may want to take this tour or this one . Even if you don’t typically take tours, I would recommend taking tours as much as possible in Moscow. Many people do not speak English and most information is not in English either.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Find somewhere to stay in Moscow near the Red Square so you are convenient to all the sights!

I am planning to go to Moscow and St. Petersburg this year so reading this was very helpful. I would love to do the walking tour! What time of year did you do it? I am planning to go in August as I really can’t stand the cold 😀 Do you think August might be a good time to visit Moscow? Thank you so much for your information!

I did the walking tour in September. July and August are the best times to visit Moscow in my opinion, so you are going at a great time! I lived in Moscow for a year so I have a lot of posts about Moscow and a couple for St. Petersburg too. Please check out my other posts as you are planning your trip and feel free to send any questions my way!

I would love to take the walking tour to get a good coverage of the area! The tip about paying for the bathrooms is great. That’s something I didn’t realize when I went to Europe for the first time from the US.

I always find it annoying paying for bathrooms in Europe!

I visited Moscow in June this year for the World Cup and I loved it. St. Basil’s Cathedral was the highlight for me, it’s such an impressive piece of architecture. I would’ve liked to visit more of Russia but maybe next time!

I really enjoyed Moscow during the World Cup too. The city was much livelier than usual!

' src=

I have been to St. Petersburg but never to Moscow. I think that these kind of tours are very useful to gather many information but I second your suggestion to visit the palaces inside as they have stunning interior decor and art treasures.

Yes, I think both going on tours and getting an overview and touring the inside of places are good to do.

Kansas City's distillery scene is more diverse than ever. Here's a guide to locally-made spirits

Exterior view of the side of a building with the word "Distillery" painted in white letters on a black background up the side of the two story building and "Lifted Spirits" painted at the top, above the "Y".

Kansas City's tradition of alcohol production stretches back to the 1800s and through the Pendergast days. These days, you can visit and sample modern distilleries around the metro, whether your taste is for whiskey, gin, vodka or even agave spirits.

This story was first published in KCUR's Adventure newsletter. You can  sign up to receive stories like this in your inbox every Tuesday.

The state of Kansas outlawed liquor in 1881 , well before the national Prohibition movement. That didn’t stop the people of eastern Kansas from enjoying their spirits, though: Everything moved just across State Line Road and into the West Bottoms near 9th Street.

At one point in the 1900s, 25 saloons were operating in the small block .

When Prohibition came in 1920 with the 18th Amendment, things changed in Kansas City…kind of. The saloons and some of the liquor distilleries were gone, but speakeasies sprang up in popularity. The era of the Kansas City Bootlegger had begun. People like Tom Pendergast and mobster John Lazia acted quickly, and this section of the city became known as the " Wettest Block ."

The city’s underground distilleries flourished, and although there were some casualties like the original J. Reiger and Co, others continued to meet the black-market demand for liquor.

Casual Animal's spacious and inviting interior — not to mention cold beer — makes it a great place to cool down during the final days of summer.

Prohibition ended in 1933 with the 21st Amendment , although Kansas still hasn’t technically ratified it . Since then, Kansas City has revived its distillery scene, and then some.

These days, whiskey, bourbon, scotch, gin, agave liquors, and even absinthe can be found around town. Enjoy the legacy of these distilleries new and old all around Kansas City.

J. Rieger & Co.

A clear glass bottle next to a clear glass snifter, both with amber colored liquid inside, placed on the top of a wooden barrel.

J. Rieger & Co. is your connection back to the end of the Wild West. In 1887 , right after Kansas’ Prohibition, family patriarch Jacob Rieger set up shop on Genesee Street in the West Bottoms. In 1900, his son, Alexander Rieger , expanded into mail-order spirits, complete with marketing gifts like corkscrews and shot glasses.

After the 18th Amendment, the distillery shut down and the family moved into banking. But decades later, in 2014, J. Rieger & Co made its comeback, revived by Ryan Maybee, Dave Pickerell, and Andy Rieger - who the company says was the “only living ‘Rieger’ of Jacob’s bloodline.”

They started distilling again in 2015, and now have a wide selection of whiskey, gin, vodka, and bourbon.

Whiskey is the umbrella term for liqueurs made with a mash of cereal grains such as corn, rye, or barley, which is then aged in oak barrels to transform into that iconic amber fluid.

Bourbon, on the other hand, is a specifically American invention. Much like how champagne , tequila and Scotch must be from distinct regions to earn their name, a whiskey has certain extra requirements to be called bourbon: The mash must contain at least 51% corn, be aged for at least two years in a new, charred barrel, and have no artificial flavors added.

Rieger’s Kansas City Whiskey is described as smooth, well-balanced, and somewhat sweet. It was named the “Best American Whiskey” by the American Spirits Council of Tasters (ASCOT) in 2023. J. Rieger also partnered with Kansas City Chiefs to produce the Chiefs Championship Vodka and the Red Kingdom Vodka .

And there is a ton to do at J. Rieger’s distillery itself, which is now over in the East Bottoms, including tours, whiskey tastings or simply enjoying cocktails at their multiple bars – including the underground Hey! Hey! Club . Check their website for dates and times .

Tom's Town Distilling

Wooden barrels with the words "Tom's Town" stamped on the top of the barrel.

Tom’s Town Distilling founders David Epstein and Steve Revare recall the time of Prohibition with the namesake of their distillery, Tom Pendergast. A mobster and political boss, Pendergast thrived and shaped Kansas City for decades (asked why he ignored liquor bans, he allegedly declared, “ the people are thirsty ”).

This distillery, which opened in the Crossroads Arts District in 2016, offers a set of spirits called The Machine that’s inspired by Pendergast’s political organization in Kansas City. In addition to their gin and whiskey offerings, the collection includes a brandy , which is made by distilling fermented wine, and a “white port bourbon” that was aged in port wine barrels .

You can grab a cocktail or dinner at the Tom’s Town tasting room, but there are also tons of fun adventures to be had at their site, including tours. On Tuesdays, you can join the Bottling Crew , where volunteers bottle the spirits and get to take home one when you leave. The distillery also offers Pendergast Cocktail College , where participants can learn drink recipes from their pro bartenders.

Union Horse Distilling

Three people lift up a drink, each different, next to a bottle of Union Horse whiskey.

Union Horse ’s giant distilling container is named Chester Copperpot, a name inspired by the 1985 movie “The Goonies.” At 500 gallons, it towers above just about everything else in their Lenexa space. Copper acts as another layer of filtration during the distilling process . By removing impurities, you get a “cleaner” taste.

Founded in 2010 by the Garcia family – Eric, Patrick, and Damian – Union Horse wanted to bring “something special and unique to our hometown of Kansas City,” and they’re doing so in a portfolio of whiskey, bourbons and vodka.

This is where it’s helpful to know more about what’s in a whiskey “mash.” Typically, it can include corn, rye, malted barley, wheat or any combination of the above.

When a whiskey is referred to as “ single malt ,” that means that the mash contains malted barley only, and made at a single distillery. That’s what you’ll get in Union Horse’s Rivalist American Single Malt Whiskey , which has been aged for four years.

Their Anniversary Release Reserve Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a highlight as well. Aged for 10 years, each bottle is signed by the master distiller and co-founder Patrick Garcia.

Head to a distillery tour , where you’ll learn about the distilling process from milling to bottling, and get to try out their selections. And keep an eye out for their next Distillery Social, where you can enjoy their space and hobnob with new friends.

Mean Mule Distilling

A clear bottle with the label for Mean Mule Distilling Co. is next to a large terracota planter and a clear glass with clear liquid in it, on a Southwest style run.

The family myth around Mean Mule Distilling goes that Great Great Grandma and her son built a still in the 1920s, making liquor with whatever corn and grain they could find. When the law came, their beloved family mule got kicking.

Today, what makes Mean Mule different is that they use agave in all their process. Agave is the plant that is the main ingredient for tequila and mezcal - they just can’t call it that. (Both tequila and mezcal must be made in Mexico, among other requirements, to claim the label.)

Founded by Meg and Jeff Evans in 2016, Mean Mule opened their tasting room in the Crossroads Arts District in 2019. Their Silver Spirit , with “notes of vanilla and delicate florals,” won a gold award from the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition , and their agave gin has won awards too.

Mean Mule also puts out a dark brown Heritage spirit that’s made from agave, that tastes somewhere between whiskey and tequila. And keep an eye out for their collaboration with Korean restaurant Chingu , which will claim the title of the first soju (a rice-based distilled alcohol) made in the Midwest.

Stop by for one of their happy hours or weekly specials — and let your curiosity do the ordering. Or get adventurous at home with one of Mean Mule's cocktail kits.

West Bottoms Whiskey Co.

A crowd of about thirty people mingle outside a gray-painted and wooden framed city building with the painted numbers 1 3 2 1 on it. Some people are seated at picnic tables and others stand in an area that is cordoned off from the street by chains attached to wooden barrels.

The West Bottoms Whiskey Co is located in an actual pre-Prohibition train tunnel, and its dark oak bar and loft stairs remind you of a refined gentlemen’s drinking club from the 1920s - even though it opened in 2021.

Start with their Kansas City Whiskey, a blended whiskey that combines rye and bourbon with Oloroso sherry from Spain . It’s a perfect sipping whiskey that goes down smooth, and it won the best in state award last year from the International Whiskey Competition .

West Bottoms’ single malt whiskey and blended malt whiskeys deserve your attention as well. And when you’re in this historic space, take a distillery tour to see how it all gets made, and try out refreshing drinks in their cocktail parlor .

You can also find West Bottoms Whiskey Co. at all kinds of events throughout Kansas City, as well as partnering with businesses like the Mid-America LGBT Chamber and the Folly Theater .

Restless Spirits Distilling

A bottle with amber liquid with the label Restless Spirits Stonebreaker next to a clear glass with amber liquid with a large copper distilling container in the background.

To all the days here and after, may they be filled with fond memories, happiness, and laughter. That Irish toast welcomes you in the door of Restless Spirits in North Kansas City.

For founder Michael Shannon, it’s all about his Irish family. Throughout the distillery, pictures of his ancestors look down in blessing. Like other liquors, Irish Whiskey – which typically uses malted and unmalted barley, and must be aged in a barrel for at least two years – can’t be called Irish if it’s made outside of Ireland. But you can recreate some of those distinctive tastes, which Restless Spirits has done.

Restless Spirits’ Stone Breaker Whiskey, is a delicious example of a blended whiskey, which uses imported Irish whiskey along with its own recipe to create a smooth and crisp taste.

Their newest offering is called the Sons of Erin , a partnership with the Great Northern Distillery of Dundalk in Ireland. It’s aged four years and “is sweet in taste and light on the palate.”

Beyond their Irish-ish whiskeys, Restless Spirits also offers a cinnamon-flavored whiskey, a botanical gin, a barrel-finished gin, and a vodka. Restless Spirits also has a fun distillery tour , where you’ll get to see their huge, custom-made copper distilling tank. It’s at least half a story tall and wide enough to take a nap in if you wanted to.

Head on back to see the bottling set up and then end up with the barrels. Restless Spirits uses local and imported barrels depending on their needs. And like many other distilleries, they offer an event space as well.

Lifted Spirits

A lineup of the gins, absinthe, whiskey and vodka made by Kansas City's Lifted Spirits.

Lifted Spirits in the Crossroads specializes in gin, and has taken the liquor to a whole new level.

Gin has its own set of rules on how it can be made: The base must be made from a neutral grain or fruit such as wheat or grapes, and all gin must contain juniper berries. Then each distillery will add its own botanicals — things like flowers, herbs, bark and spices — to distinguish that gin’s flavor.

Founder Michael Stuckey opened Lifted Spirits on December 2016, and has put together a line of gins you might not find anywhere else. The fragrance of their Bold Gin , with deep berry tones that remind you of spring, hits your nose a split second before you taste the liquor.

Lifted Spirits also carries a rye whiskey and an absinthe , a bright-green spirit made from herbs like fennel and wormwood that’s used in drinks like a Sazerac. Absinthe is a high-alcohol liquor, though, so drink carefully: Lifted Spirits’ version is 136 proof, meaning it’s 68% alcohol by volume (ABV).

Lifted Spirits offers distillery tours and tastings, or you can stop by their tasting room for a signature cocktail.

Holladay Distillery

Wooden barrels with the logo for Holladay Distiller branded on them roll on a metal frame toward a man in the background.

Holladay Distillery was originally founded in 1856 by Ben Holladay, who was quite the character . At one point was known as the Stagecoach King, Holladay was once the largest single employer in the U.S., owning the famous Wells Fargo Express and Pony Express. Plus, he made whiskey.

Many may remember when this distillery operated under the name of McCormick Distilling Company. However, for their 160 anniversary in 2016, the current owners decided to turn back time and go back to the original Holladay name.

Located in Weston, Holladay Distillery puts out a Ben Holladay Bourbon that is marked as Real Missiouri Bourbon . This means, because of a 2019 state law , that it must be “mashed, fermented, distilled, aged, and bottled in the state.” Don’t miss out on their Ancient Cave Collection , an experimental bourbon that has been aged for six years in “level-three-charred, white oak barrels” that are housed in a structure dating back to 1837.

Those who really want to go down the rabbit hole can also look up their Distillers Journal , which chronicles when and how each batch of whiskey is made.

On their distillery tours , you’ll get a history lesson and an adventure, with a look at a limestone spring that was first discovered by Lewis and Clark. And they often host events throughout the year that are well worth the trip.

(Correction: A version of this story incorrectly identified a co-founder of Tom's Town Distilling. David Epstein founded the company along with Steve Revare.)

On 'tigers blood,' waxahatchee is in her anti-eras era.

Tigers Blood is songwriter Katie Crutchfield's sixth album as Waxahatchee. Molly Matalon/Courtesy of the artist hide caption

Tigers Blood is songwriter Katie Crutchfield's sixth album as Waxahatchee.

Even if you've never listened to a note of Taylor Swift 's music in your life, it's undeniable that we're living through our eras era. The smart branding of the pop superstar's record-breaking world tour has propagated the idea, taken from the language of stan culture, that life passes in clear chapters. Social media helps us mark those chapters with distinct visual identities, highly specific fashion -cores stitching together an aesthetic micro-history. This mentality of clear demarcation has also found a match in the language of absolutes that has sprung up around interpersonal relationships: boundaries, cutting out "toxic" friends; packing up, shipping out and moving on from the mess.

I can understand the appeal of this kind of containment. The notion that you've closed the door on a certain period of life offers a sense of control, as well as the reassurance that you're categorically no longer that person. It's a lovely fantasy — one that seems to me like trying to build dams in the rushing river of life. Tigers Blood , Katie Crutchfield's gorgeous sixth album as Waxahatchee , sails down that river. The 35-year-old Alabama songwriter understands that we do not evolve tidily from chrysalis to caterpillar to butterfly, but stumble along a zig-zag of pitfalls and revelations, the best of which you can only hope you have the humility to learn from.

Her last record, 2020's Saint Cloud , was the kind that found her blinking into a new dawn. It was written as she got sober, a dramatic gear shift for a lifer of the road and all the hard living that comes with it. She pivoted from indie-rock back toward the country heartland of her Southern youth, opening up brand new shafts of light on her once-knotted songwriting, and tentatively tested the strength of a good relationship, with fellow musician Kevin Morby , anxious about whether it could hold the fullness of her.

Kevin Morby And Waxahatchee Duet From Kevin's Tiny Desk In Kansas City

Kevin Morby And Waxahatchee: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Tigers Blood has no such plot twist. Crutchfield's sobriety and relationship have endured. Saint Cloud may have doubled her audience, she estimated recently, but she's said she disregarded any pressure to capitalize on its success by shooting for the rafters — or going pop, as she and producer Brad Cook briefly entertained before discomfort got the better of them — instead choosing to refine her sound and themes, an intentional attempt at artistic longevity in the vein of her heroes Tom Petty and Lucinda Williams , as well as keeping her life manageable. (She kept things fresh by inviting in fellow Southern rocker MJ Lenderman , and let his off-kilter harmonies and wandering guitar take precedent over the role she had imagined he might play on the album.) It's an appealingly anti-eras mentality: less reinvention than continual refinement — an intent reflected in the striking sensitivity of Crutchfield's songwriting.

On Tigers Blood , no bond is linear or static. Some of these songs sound ready to run, bursting from the traps; others take their ease with intoxicating beauty. Love boomerangs and comes back. Sisters have an unexpected showdown about their respective heady and cautious approaches to life. Crutchfield can't even predict her own nature: The shortcomings she seems most certain of barely register with her loving partner; the defiant oblivion and "blood loss" of self-delusion on the recklessly euphoric cowpunk of " Ice Cold " proves to be "such a weak performance after all" on the easy reconciliation of " Lone Star Lake ," a banjo amble so reassuring you can practically feel a hand reaching from the speaker to smooth your hair as you listen.

Crutchfield's life may have settled, but her lens remains restless. Individual songs rarely tell a whole or consistent story, moving without clear telegraphing between intimacies, observations and motivations. None of these vicissitudes are reasons to throw her hands up and lament the mess. She observes opposing forces like a poetic physicist wondering if and how they might be reconciled and, for the most part, places conversation over ultimatum. If the comfortably diffuse Tigers Blood has some larger theme, it might be resisting the script. There are lines that seem to be about taking the easy route as a songwriter, but others about the naivety of integrity; not feeling beholden to stories that you used to tell about yourself ("Some folktale I'm keeping alive whole the curtain falls / Dramatic demise," she sings on "Ice Cold"), but not self-scrutinizing to the point of paralysis either.

Curiously, the most straightforward song on Tigers Blood is the one Crutchfield has called the hardest for her to write. " Bored ," she said when it was released as a single, is about her anger with a friend she needed to leave behind — a "scary" topic for someone whose self-professed comfort zone as a writer "lies somewhere on the emotional spectrum of sadness and heartache." Yet she proves a natural, setting aside the rest of the record's country warmth to seethe and sting, the chorus a twisted thrash of guitar and battered drums.

Through My Sister's Eyes: Allison And Katie Crutchfield On Each Other's Music

Music Interviews

Through my sister's eyes: allison and katie crutchfield on each other's music.

Of course, she has precedent here: You can trace this sound back to Crutchfield's origins in the DIY punk band P.S. Eliot, which she and her twin, Allison , formed as teenagers in Alabama. But there is a carefulness to the writing that goes beyond instinctive, inchoate youthful catharsis. The ticking pace in the first verse indicates a narrator with one eye on the clock, plotting their escape from a situation that's making their teeth grind. Moreover, the too-tidy nesting rhyme scheme in the second verse seems to resound with contempt for a confidante content to grab at easy answers. "And what a blessing," Crutchfield sings slyly, letting the last word flare. "Say you've been manifesting."

This may count as the ultimate insult. Her friend is banking on simply willing good fortune into existence, forgoing the hard yards of working to cultivate one's life. (As Crutchfield sings about how she plays her role and fills up this person's "empty cup," you can practically hear them prattling away obliviously.) It's anathema to Crutchfield's acute observance of the push and pull, the sacrifice and grace, the openness that goes into any relationship, including the one you maintain with yourself.

Let Tigers Blood spark that curiosity within you. In its palimpsest of memories and interior monologue, one line especially sticks out to me. The lead single, " Right Back to It ," is a gorgeous ramble through the safe harbor of a relationship, one secure enough to endure the sudden swerves of one partner testing the other's devotion. "I get ahead of myself / Refusing anyone's help," Crutchfield laments. I am one month, one day younger than Crutchfield, 35, and I recognize adulthood as I've experienced it in her songs: If one's 20s are unselfconscious accumulations of experience, the turn of the next decade is about identifying the impulses that drive your successes and failures and working with them as best you can. "Might be good on my own, but I ain't running away / I wanna chase it to the end," she sings on " Burns Out at Midnight ," a decisiveness reflected in the peaceful, spacious arrangement.

It is not in the nature of Tigers Blood to offer answers, but its clearest talisman comes on " Crimes of the Heart ," a beautifully nervous song about what might have been if Crutchfield's old instinct for starting over had prevailed. "Don't overextend," she croons. "Hail the darkness you can befriend." Contrary to what self-help hacks might have you think, no one can manifest pain out of their lives, nor reach revelation via wishful thinking. Those things take hard work, a commitment to staying honest, a conviction that "self-actualization" is really the work of learning how to be in community with others. With its intimate lens and shaggy, sunlit benedictions, Tigers Blood makes it clear that it's worth it.

The Boss is back: Bruce Springsteen launches 2024 tour with a joyous Phoenix concert

restless road tour 2024

When Rolling Stone invited readers to vote for the greatest live acts of all time in 2011, it’s doubtful the results came as a huge surprise to anyone.

Not only did Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band win the popular vote, they did it without “a close second anywhere in sight."

And that’s because their concerts were — and are , as they reminded us as Springsteen relaunched his postponed world tour on Tuesday, March 19, at Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix — the stuff of legends.

Springsteen and The E Street Band stretch the boundaries of what it means to prove it all night while chasing moments of transcendence that can range from deeply moving to profoundly silly.

Bruce Springsteen setlist 2024: Every song he sang at Phoenix tour relaunch

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band relaunched their tour in Phoenix

The last time Springsteen brought the E Street Band to Phoenix , on a tour in 2016 re-exploring “The River,” they turned in a 3½-hour concert whose truly awe-inspiring six-song encore ended in a spirited revival of the Isley Brothers’ “Shout.”

The fans who flocked to Footprint Center on Tuesday night were on a pilgrimage to see the relaunch of the E Street Band’s first tour since then — a tour cut short in 2023 as Springsteen was treated for peptic ulcer disease, a potentially serious gastrointestinal condition.

Springsteen turned 74 in late September 2023. Four days later, he broke the news that he’d been forced to postpone all remaining concerts booked for 2023 “out of an abundance of caution.”

Naturally, I went into the Springsteen concert on Tuesday night assuming I might feel the need to make allowances for age and health and everything those words imply, especially when used that close together.

But the Springsteen who rocked that arena in Phoenix on Tuesday didn’t need my well-intentioned qualifiers.

He 'just kind of shot through the roof': How Phoenix radio made Bruce Springsteen the Boss

Springsteen brought his A-game to the relaunch of his world tour

The man brought his A-game at the helm of an 18-member E Street Band (or 17 if you’re not counting Springsteen as a member of that band, which seems a bit ridiculous) in a breathless journey through their glory days with an energy that only seemed to flag in the course of their nearly three-hour performance when the song itself demanded it.

He’s certainly scaled back on the physicality of his performance style.

There were no bent-knee slides across the stage. No leaping to rival a young Pete Townshend. But the sense of showmanship remains, from the playful rapport of Springsteen's onstage antics with the members of the E Street Band to the charming self-awareness of his dance moves to that moment toward the end where he tore his shirt open for no apparent reason other than to entertain.

His voice has aged a bit since the first time he followed that iconic shout of “1-2-3-4” with “the highway’s jammed with broken heroes on a last-chance power drive.” But he’s too good a singer to let that compromise the essence of his vocals, settling into a more conversational delivery on “Born to Run” that made it feel like you were hearing those same lyrics for the first time after knowing them for nearly 50 years while also sidestepping the high notes.

Springsteen and the E Street Band are on a search-and-rescue mission

My favorite Springsteen memory is the E Street Band reunion show I saw in 1999 at the Meadowlands in Jersey, where the Boss announced that they were on a “search-and-rescue mission” to regenerate, rejuvenate and otherwise rekindle the spark that is “the majesty, the mystery and the ministry of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Of course they were.

And 25 years later? Springsteen seemed as committed as ever to that search-and-rescue mission, from the time he and his bandmates made their entrance one-by-one to set the tone with “Lonesome Day,” one of three songs they played from “The Rising,” to the raucous rendition of “Twist and Shout” that brought the encore to a joyous climax, having been requested by an 18-year-old fan whose sign said this was his first Springsteen concert.

That kid obviously picked a good night to be introduced to what it means to witness Springsteen in his element, leading the E Street Band in a 29-song overview of his career.

Highlights ranged from 'Born to Run' to 'Dancing in the Dark'

The setlist made its way through countless classics, reaching back to his first album, “Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.,” for a loose-limbed “Spirit in the Night,” and touching on a number of the most beloved songs on “Born to Run” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town” as well as “No Surrender,” “Dancing in the Dark” and other crowd-pleasing highlights of “Born in the U.S.A.,” a 17-times-platinum mainstream-saturating exercise in world domination that remains his most successful album.

They also dusted off a handful of the soul and R&B songs Springsteen covered on his latest album, 2022’s “Only the Strong Survive,” and three songs from his latest album of original material, “Letter To You,” including the solo acoustic version of “I’ll See You In My Dreams” that brought the encore to a haunted finish.

But what made that concert special went beyond what songs they played.

The E Street Band remain a force of nature, despite the loss of Clarence Clemons — “the Big Man” as his joining of the band is celebrated even now in “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” — and Danny Federici, who played organ, glockenspiel and accordion from the time they put the band together in Belmar, New Jersey, until his death in 2008.

Springsteen honored their memory during “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out," during which their images were flashed across the screens above the stage.

The new, expanded E Street Band was brilliant

The current edition of the E Street Band is a three-guitar army with Springsteen, the Valley's own Nils Lofgren and Steven Van Zandt taking turns in the spotlight, two great keyboard players (Roy Bittan and touring member Charles Giordano), violinist Soozie Tyrell, the stellar rhythm section of drummer Max Weinberg and bassist Garry Tallent, and 44-year-old Jake Clemons still doing an excellent job of honoring his uncle, Clarence Clemons, who died in 2011, with the swagger (and physical stature) one would need to even try to fill those shoes.

There’s a flashiness to Lofgren’s soloing that’s undeniable while Springsteen squeezes out the sparks in solos that rely more on the power of each individual note and how it’s phrased, as evidenced on “Prove It All Night,” in particular, while indulging in some low-end twang Duane Eddy would’ve envied on a fantastic “Letter to You.”

The E Street Band’s ranks are further fleshed out in their current incarnation by four backup singers, a four-man horn squad and percussionist Anthony Almonte.

It was quite the crowded stage.

Springsteen kept the banter to a minimum in Phoenix

Springsteen's legend is based in part on his conversational approach to showmanship, as evidenced by the classic monologues captured on “Live/1975–85.”

But he kept the chit-chat to a minimum for much of Tuesday’s concert.

Taking the stage in a red-and-black flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled extra high, he greeted the fans with a quick “Good evening, Arizona. 1-2-3-4” and barely said another word until he’d made it through “The Promised Land,” the 10th song of the night.

Springsteen eulogized his teenage bandmate George Theiss

His first big monologue was 14 songs deep, after “Mary’s Place,” when he introduced the poignant “Last Man Standing” with the story of George Theiss, a bandmate he met at 15.

“It was 1965,” he began.

“I was 15 years old and I had been playing guitar for about six months when one summer afternoon, I heard a knock on my door and it was George Theiss, a school friend of mine, and he was looking for a guitar player to audition for his band.”

Springsteen passed the audition in a “shotgun shack” and “embarked on the greatest adventure of my life,” he said. “I played in my first real rock ‘n’ roll band and it lasted for three years. As kids. Three years! That’s a lifetime for teenagers.”

Fast forward 50 years and a much older Springsteen is visiting Theiss on his deathbed as his former bandmate is dying of cancer.

“He only had a few days to live,” Springsteen said. “And I realized that his passing would leave me as the last living member of that first band, the Castiles.”

Springsteen spoke of 'death's final and lasting gift to us'

Death brings a certain clarity, Springsteen said. “Death’s final and lasting gift to us, the living, is you get an expanded vision of the life you can live yourself. George’s death made me realize, again, just how important it is to try and live every moment you’re here.”

And with that, the stage was set for “Last Man Standing,” a haunted highlight of his latest album of original material, “Letter to You.”

The tribute to his fallen bandmate carried over into “Backstreets,” one of several emotional highlights that ventured into existential territory.

He didn’t mention the loss of his mother, Adele Ann Springsteen, who died in January at 98. But there’s no doubt that she was on his mind.

Even "Night Shift," the Commodores cover from "Only the Strong Survive," felt like it tied into the existential theme.

After bringing the show to a crowd-pleasing climax in an encore packed with some of Springsteen’s most enduring calling cards, from “Born to Run” to “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” “Glory Days,” an anthemic “Dancing in the Dark” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” Springsteen sent the other members of the E Street Band away after a joyous “Twist and Shout” to end the night with a solo acoustic rendition of “I’ll See You in My Dreams.”

"I'll see you in my dreams," he sang. "We'll meet and live and laugh again. I'll see you in my dreams, yeah, around the river bend. For death is not the end and I'll see you in my dreams."

Springsteen apologized for postponing his Phoenix concert

But first, he said he was sorry he had to reschedule his world tour.

“First, I want to apologize if there was any discomfort because we had to move the show last time,” he said. “I had a mother (expletive) of a bellyache. I hope we didn’t inconvenience you too much.”

Then after making a plea on behalf of St. Mary’s Food Bank , he brought the concert to an existential close with “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” a suitably haunted reflection on the friends he lost along the way.

It was a fitting close to a concert steeped in existential musings by a legend who invited us to take that long walk on his first release with “Growin’ Up.”

More than 50 years later, Springsteen is still growin’ up, inviting us to come along. It’s a beautiful thing if you’re willing to let your guard down and experience the ride.
