The story of Grover wines begins with a unique friendship between Kanwal Grover, the company’s founder and a businessman (also known as the father of Indian viticulture), and George Vesselle, former Technical Director of Champagne Mumm Vineyard in France. Together they traveled the country to find the ideal location and settled on Nandi Hills in Bangalore, where they planted the first vines in 1988. Today, Nandi Valley is recognized as a rich wine-producing region in India.

Grover Zampa Vineyards - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Grover Zampa, Nandi Hills, Bangalore

December 14, 2013 by Jolad Rotti

Grover Vineyards was established in 1988 by Mr. Kanwal Grover and Mr. Georges Vesselle to breathe fresh life into the stagnant wine-drinking culture in India. Grover Vineyards is spread over four hundred acres of land at the foot of the Nandi Hills in Bangalore. The Grover family has enjoyed great success over the last twenty years, and three generations have overseen the brand’s ascension to the very top of the wine-making industry.

grover-vineyars, Nandi Hills

Grover Vineyards has the distinction of being the country’s only winery that has the globally celebrated French winemaker, Michel Rolland, as a consultant. In 2001, the establishment began selling wine to the epicentre of global wine-making itself: France. One of the reasons for the company’s meteoric rise has been the decision to use French wine grapes instead of ordinary table grapes, which is the norm in India. In 2008, the firm unveiled a renovated winery. Located about three minutes away from the vineyards, the winery boasts international standards for wine storage.

Grover Vineyards has a unique style as it pertains to the art of winemaking. Michel Rolland, the premier wine consultant in the world today, has been an advisor to the company since 1995. His uncanny ability to manufacture wines that are supple, rich, sumptuous, and distinct has helped catapult Grover Vineyards to the very top of the field.

White wines

Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier are the two white wines on offer from the company. Grapes are selected meticulously, and after getting rid of the surplus bits, the juice is separated from the skin. Care is taken to minimize skin contact with the juice as unnecessary colour comes from the skin. Temperature stabilization is carried out and yeasts are introduced to the juice. The yeasts transform the sugar in the liquid to alcohol. Once fermentation is over, the juice is moved from one container to the other to clear the wine completely. After a final round of filtration, the white wines are set for bottling.

The procedure to make red wine varies slightly from the aforementioned one. After grape selection and crushing, the juice is left in contact with seeds and skins to gain colour. Upon completion of temperature stabilization and fermentation, the wine is again left with skin and seeds (pomace) to extract even further colour and tannins. After transferring the juice from one container to the other between 8 and 10 times, blending is carried out. Before bottling, a final filtration is done to guarantee the quality of the wine.

Decanter Magazine, the world’s most well-regarded wine magazine, bestowed the honour of ‘Best New World Red Wine’ to the La Réserve from Grover Vineyards. La Réserve is made from Cabernet and Shiraz grape. The procedure to make this unique wine involves leaving the liquid in contact with the pomace for nearly double the period as normal red wines.

Rosé wine is another variant on offer from Grover Vineyards. It differs from red wine in that rosé wine is left with skins and seeds for just a few hours. After this, the same winemaking techniques used for making white wine are carried out.

Vineyard Tour and wine tasting

Grover Vineyards offers a chance to get a firsthand experience of the winemaking process through their personalized tours. The tour starts at the vineyard, where a brief history of wines and cultivation is provided. The opportunity to stroll around the picturesque surroundings and take photos is also made available.  After this, the action shifts to the winery, where detailed information regarding crushing, filtering, processing and packaging is supplied.

The next stop is the barrel room, where real, imported oak barrels full of La Réserve lie in wait. One can taste five different varieties of wine over an hour and a half whilst listening to relaxing music in the air-conditioned cellar. A delightful lunch follows this. The tour costs Rs. 1,000 per person.

How to Reach

The closest airport to Grover Vineyards is the Bengaluru International Airport (located 30 kilometres away).  It is well-connected to most of the cities in India and worldwide. A taxi from Bangalore International Airport to Grover Vineyards costs Rs. 1,000 on average.

Bangalore City Railway Station is located 43 kilometres away from Grover Vineyards. Trains to Bangalore City Railway Station are available from various parts of the country. A taxi from the railway station to the vineyards costs Rs. 1,500 on average.

A slew of buses connect Doddaballapur to the rest of Bangalore. Both private and state-run vehicular transport are available. Taxis and autorickshaws can be availed from Doddaballapur to Grover Vineyards. The cost of travel depends on the mode of transport.

This Is Why You Should Plan A Weekend Trip To Grover Zampa Vineyard Near Bengaluru!

More than two consecutive weekends spent indoor makes me a restless and cranky person. Thankfully before the transformation could creep in, work took me from Delhi to Bengaluru . This time I was looking for more adventures than simply enjoying the pleasant Bengaluru weather at a roof top café in Indira Nagar. Around 50-km away from the city’s heart, my tipsy and tasty adventure was waiting. By Nidhi Kandari

Grover Zampa Vineyard

A lover of wine, nature and experiences, I found myself at the Grover Zampa Vineyards in Nandi Hills near Bengaluru. Refurbished recently, the premises boasted of vineyards, winery and the brand’s very first restaurant and lounge, Lounge de la Reserve . A sucker for knowledge, there came out my notepad and pen as soon as we entered the winery for a tour. Excited, anxious and fascinated, I found myself amused at every step – be it while observing the ice-cold manufacturing area where the wine was fermented, or while wandering through the grape farms of Nandi Hills, or while tasting the aromatic and floral Vijay Amritraj wine right in the cellar where barrels and barrels of wine were being aged.

Grover Zampa Vineyard

Following the wine tour, I got to taste the recently launched three new wines of Grover Zampa. La Réserve Royale fermented for more than 30 months reveals a very clear, fine and complex bouquet of lemon zest, flowers, fresh hazelnuts and brioche. Vendanges Tardives comes from the matured vines and is a rich, intense, full-bodied dessert wine of uncommon grace and elegance. Fermented for 24 months, the handpicked Shiraz grapes of Vintage of Insignia lead to a meandering trail of fruit-berries, coffee and chocolate, with a hint of black pepper.

Grover Zampa Vineyard

I thoroughly enjoyed the three new and unique wines, partly because of the wine itself, and partly because after getting to know the step-by-step process of how a grape turns into delicious wine, I was more appreciative of every sip that I gulped down.

Our Experience of Wine Tour and Testing

I had heard a lot about Grover Zampa Vineyard but never got a chance to visit. I planned this trip with my wife and my little one. Although Ruchi couldn't taste the wines as my little boy is still very young, our short trip to this beautiful place was amazing and memorable.

We knew that we would not be able to view the green farms and the riped grapes as June month is not the season of grapes but still, we took a chance to visit this place on one of the weekends recently.

As we arrived, there was a dedicated parking area to park the vehicles. We reached the premises with a lot of excitement and entered the waiting area which was absolutely ravishing and captivating. There were amazing seating arrangements where you can wait for the tour and also can have delicious cuisine.

We hardly waited for like 5-10 minutes and the guide came to take our batch to the wine-making tour. Hen shared some interesting facts about the vineyard and its rich history. We learned that Grover Zampa is one of the oldest and most renowned wineries in India, known for producing exceptional wines.

Ideally, the tour starts with the grape cultivation site , where we could learn about the different grape varieties cultivated at Grover Zampa and the importance of selecting the right grape varieties based on the climate and soil conditions. But due to the off-season of grapes, we directly went through the crushing and pressing process.

The guide gave a detailed explanation of this process separates the grape juice from the skins, seeds, and stems, and how the grapes undergo crushing and pressing .

The next process was fermentation , the guide explained that the temperature and duration of fermentation vary depending on the wine style and desired flavor profile.

The next step is aging , the aging process allows the wine to develop complex flavors and aromas. The guide mentioned that different wines have different aging requirements, with some benefiting from longer periods of maturation.

Once the wine has reached its desired level of aging, it is bottled and stored in the winery's cellar.

These were just a few highlights of the wine-making process we learned during the tour at Grover Zampa Vineyard. It was fascinating to witness the intricate steps involved in crafting a fine bottle of wine, and it gave us a deeper appreciation for the art and science behind the creation of each glass we enjoyed during the tasting.

Smile

Anyways, we started with the whites and moved on to the reds. The wines were delicious, each with its unique flavors and characteristics. We savored the crispness of the Sauvignon Blanc, the fruity notes of the Merlot, and the boldness of the Cabernet Sauvignon. It was a delight to experience the diverse range of flavors and aromas.

Throughout the tasting, we were encouraged to ask questions and explore our preferences. The staff was patient and shared their expertise, helping us understand the nuances of wine tasting. It was a wonderful opportunity to enhance our knowledge about wines.

We finally ended our outing with a delightful lunch.

Overall, our experience at Grover Zampa Vineyard was unforgettable. The beautiful surroundings, informative tour, and delightful wine tasting made it a truly memorable day.

Whether you're a wine enthusiast or someone looking for a unique outing, a visit to this vineyard is highly recommended.

Thank you for reading :)

Grover Zampa Vineyards : Day Trips in Bangalore 7.30AM – 3.30PM (Trip 15)

Trip – 15 : Grover Zampa Vineyards

Jan – Feb – Mar is grape season – the perfect time to go on a day trip to a Vineyard in Bangalore. India boasts of two Wine growing areas – Bangalore & Nasik. The Grover Zampa Winery in the outskirts of Bangalore near the Devanhalli airport is a nice day trip.

grover vineyard tour

We left Koramangla at 7.30 AM and reached our breakfast stop before 9 AM ( 52 Km). We had been here a year back – its located a few kms after the International Airport.  The Indian Paratha Company is a great place for fresh piping hot Paratha’s, Chai, Lassi and a lot more. Service is excellent and food was delicious – but prices have shot up in the last one year (a plate of Sarson ki Saag and Makkai ki roti is now Rs 325). On a weekday the place was almost empty.

grover vineyard tour

The Grover Zampa Vineyard is only 17 Km from here – take a U Turn and after a few km take the right turn on the Doddaballapur main road and in less than 30 min you will reach the Grover Zampa Vineyard processing centre. This place has a vistor centre , the processing and bottling plants , and an outlet store.

grover vineyard tour

The tour starts at 10.30 AM and ends by 12.30. The guide takes you to the different sections and covers in detail all the steps of making all the varieties of Wine. You then head to the Wine tasting cellar where you are again educated on how to sample and enjoy Wine. You get to sample 5 different varieties of Wine.

grover vineyard tour

We were fascinated with the storage Drums – which can be made to stools and table tops – and yes you can buy them in May – June when the crushing season is over since they change the drums once every two years.

From here we headed to the Vinery – 1 Km away  – a well maintained large Vineyard with an eye for detail to ensure that only the best quality grapes are grown.

grover vineyard tour

We were back for lunch at the main centre. We had booked for Grape stomping ( Min 10 people) – this is not like what it looks in the movies – the scale is smaller – but there is music playing , lovely weather and the Wine from the tasting session gets you in the mood to sway while crushing the grapes – fortunately this does not go back to the wine making drums.

grover vineyard tour

Lunch is a simple affair – Soup , Veg Pulao , Raita and Gulab Jamun. We were lucky we had a heavy breakfast – they could have done better with the lunch. A quick stopover at the store to get some discounted Wine and we headed back at 2 PM reaching home by 3.45 PM.

The package costs you Rs 1590/ person  inclusive of tax – the stomping is Rs 500 – its unique but expensive , 10 minutes of stomping for a group of 10 can put you back by Rs 5000/-.

There is a premium for the uniqueness of this trip – weekdays are not crowded but weekends tend to be very busy during the season. Weekend rates are also higher. Children are allowed. A final footnote – Don’t compare this with Vineyard tours of Sonoma Napa – those are on a totally different scale

grover vineyard tour

40 kilometers toward the north of Bangalore in the state of Karnataka, stretches a region that has recently come to the world’s attention. Today, it has triumphantly risen as a rich wine producing area which was once known as Tipu Sultan’s and later, the British summer retreat. Nandi Hills is a picturesque region dotted with sloping green hillsides and miles of forestland, inhabited with incredibly beautiful wildlife. In such paradisiacal landscape, stand our vineyards.

Our vineyards spread over 410 acres and nestled on the foothills of the Nandi Hills at 920 meters above the sea level.

The region offers tranquil surroundings, a rich history and beautiful vistas to the travellers and also allows them to train their binoculars over the spectacular Asian Paradise Flycatchers, Bulbuls, Blue Capped Rock Thrush, Tawny Eagles, and Puff-Throated Babblers etc. Nandi hills’ limestone abundant soil gives our wines their distinctive, terroir-driven earthiness with depth, richness and aromatic complexity.
