How to plan a journey

• Use our Journey Planner tool at the top of the page and enter your origin station or the general area where you’ll be starting your journey. If you put ‘London’, for example, a list of stations within the city will pop up. If you don’t know which station you need, select ‘London, Any’ and we’ll do the rest.
• Enter your destination below. If you’re going from city to city, you can select the ‘Any’ option again and we’ll highlight the cheapest tickets available for the journey on the next page.
• Select your date of travel and add a return journey if you like.
• Choose how many passengers you need tickets for.
• Add a Railcard if you have one.
• Hit ‘Get times and tickets’.
• We’ve selected the cheapest available ticket for your journey, if you’re happy with it, hit ‘continue’ and book your tickets.

Can I use the Journey Planner for TfL services?

Underground trains.

In the event that your trip requires a Tube journey between two mainline railway stations, the Journey Planner will factor in a Tube journey into the total journey time. However, you cannot purchase London Underground tickets on Trainline.

Overground trains

The Journey Planner allows you to check departure times and buy tickets for London Overground services. Simply enter your departure and arrival stations and we’ll do the rest.

Rail Planner on-the-go

Need to plan your train journeys while you’re out and about? Then download our  mobile app  (available for iOS, iPad and Android) to book your train tickets or find the latest  live travel , platform or delay information at a glance.

For selected routes, you can also use  Mobile Tickets , which means no more queuing at ticket collection machines and you’ll never need to panic over a lost paper ticket again.

If you are uncertain about your destination or would like suggestions, you can ask Layla for advice regarding your trip. Otherwise, enter your destination and ask Layla to create your itinerary. Within a few seconds, you'll get a detailed plan for your trip.

As Layla is a chatbot, you can enter a prompt to ask it to change your itinerary. For instance, ask it to focus more on outdoor activities or include local restaurants. If you're unsatisfied with the activities planned on any particular day, you can give instructions and ask Layla to regenerate that part only.

Once you've perfected your itinerary, you can share it with your friends via a URL or add it to your bucket list.

2. Wonderplan

Wonderplan is a wonderful AI tool for planning your trip. To create your itinerary, Wonderplan first asks you to enter your destination country and city, your budget, the number of days you'll be staying, and your interests.

It then creates a travel plan within a few minutes, displaying various places to visit, their descriptions, and the time usually spent at each location. Although Wonderplan doesn't show the trip map, it does provide a link to Google Maps for each place.

It also displays different types of accommodation available (like Airbnb, hotel, or hostel) and their respective costs. Similarly, there are details about transportation, food, and activities. This way, you can estimate the potential cost of your trip.

In addition to your itinerary, Wonderplan also shows essential information about the country you're visiting. These include the currency conversion rate, electricity plug type, languages spoken, weather, and popular conveyances.

3. PLAN by ixigo

PLAN by ixigo starts by asking you about your dream destination. Then, it provides an option to describe the type of experience you want to have. This is just like a ChatGPT prompt, so you can enter anything you wish.

For example, you can specify the duration of your stay, your interests, the kinds of activities you're looking for, whether you have a family with you, and so on.

But if you can't think of any prompts, PLAN by ixigo provides a few trip ideas, so you can always select those. PLAN by ixigo then shows a day-wise plan, showing what you can do in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

However, if the suggested itinerary doesn't sound appealing, you can again enter a prompt to edit it.

4. iplan.ai

While iplan.ai doesn't mention which AI or machine-learning algorithm it uses, the results are fantastic enough to gloss over that. The app works beautifully on phones to give you a full itinerary for any one city at a time, depending on how many days you have there.

The app first asks you to name the destination city. As far as we checked, iplan.ai works best for popular tourist cities, not offbeat or obscure travel. Next, note how many days you will be there, and then choose your free time each day—a cool step to ensure a better itinerary if you already have some plans, but not a whole days worth.

Tell iplan.ai if you're traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or with friends, and then choose your interest among topics like history, art and culture, nature, entertainment, shopping, food, sports, relaxing, etc. Finally, choose between an economy, normal, or luxury budget.

After a few minutes, iplan.ai gives you a day-wise itinerary for your trip. It's plotted on a map so you can see all the locations, and each point of interest has a brief description along with estimated travel time.

The app has both free and paid plans. With a paid account, you can share the trip plan with your friends and access it offline. Another limitation of iplan.ai is that you can't get an itinerary for a multi-city trip. For now, you'll need to make a plan for each city you're visiting, one at a time.

The easiest last-minute travel plan is to get into a car and drive. Curiosio specializes in helping you plan an itinerary for a road trip to several major countries on all continents. It doesn't cover every single place, but the existing collection is impressive enough.

Curiosio uses its own AI engine, Ingeenee, which is trained on several crowdsourced travel-based resources, such as Wikivoyage, Wikipedia, Wikidata, Freebase, DBpedia, GeoNames, OSMNames, and OpenStreetMap. Through this dataset, it can chart an itinerary that meets your requirements across various parameters.

You can set options for a round trip or a one-way trip with starting and finishing points. If there are any places you want to visit on the way, add them in. Then set the number of travelers, dates of the journey, what vehicle you're using, total budget, and whether you want to visit places that spark curiosity or are obscure. The AI will usually give you multiple plans and routes for these options.

The itinerary includes a map of your route and a day-wise breakdown of where you'll be going and what you'll be seeing. Each point of interest is clickable to find more information about it. There are easy ways to share your itinerary with co-travelers, print it out, or even export it to Google Maps. Curiosio is one of the best road trip planners for your next adventure .

6. Trip Planner AI

Trip Planner AI plans a perfect trip to your dream destination. Begin creating your itinerary by entering the city you wish to visit and traveling dates. You can add multiple destinations here.

Then, select the kinds of activities you prefer, the number of people, and whether you're traveling with friends or family. Trip Planner AI asks you about your dietary preferences and budget.

All these travel planning AI apps urge you not to use the itinerary as-is and only treat it as a template or guide to begin planning your trip. This is because they currently have several limitations, like databases that aren't recently updated or require specific prompts from the user.

For example, if you want to see all your tasks that are due tomorrow and are urgent, just apply the filter on this view and you will get a curated list of tasks.

The My Plans page in Planner shows all of your plans, no matter where they were created. This includes lists created in To Do, plans created in Planner and Project for the web, Loop plans, plans from Teams meeting notes, and more.

The My Plans page provides five filters to help find the right plan or list:

How to plan a food tour around northern Thailand, from Chiang Mai to Phrae

Whether it's tomato rice or khao soi, Thailand's north is bursting with flavour and ripe for a culinary journey.

Until the end of the 19th century, much of what is today considered northern Thailand was an independent kingdom. Lanna (‘Million Rice Fields’) had its own distinct culture, language and cuisine. And the latter certainly remains true today. Northern Thai food leans towards savoury, tart and bitter flavours. Soups and grilled dishes are common, and influences stem from the various ethnic groups that inhabit the mountains of the region, as well as from neighbouring Myanmar and Chinese Muslims who passed by on trade routes.  

The region remained largely remote and autonomous until 1916, when the first leg of the northern train line from Bangkok was completed. This terminated in the city of Lampang; it would reach Chiang Mai, the north’s largest city, less than a decade later. There are quicker ways of travelling, but the train is a fascinating way to explore, linking big-hitter destinations and smaller provincial capitals, allowing you to slow down and take notice of the region’s unique cuisine.

Days 1-3: Chiang Mai & Lampang

Take the sleeper from Bangkok and wake up in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand’s de facto cultural capital, a walled city home to more than 100 Buddhist temples. On a Friday morning don’t miss Ban Haw Market in the city’s Muslim quarter, which unites the produce and dishes of the area’s minority groups — the so-called ‘hill tribes’, Chinese, Burmese and Shan, as well as Muslims. The Muslim quarter is also home to the city’s most famous dish: khao soi (two types of noodles in curry broth). A mild version is sold by halal vendors at the edge of the market, such as Khao Soi Islam and Khao Soi Fuang Fah. If you’re craving khao soi on any other day of the week, tack on a trip to the riverside Fa Ham area, where Buddhist vendors Khao Soi Samerjai and Khao Soi Lam Duan Fa Ham have been slinging flavoursome bowls for decades.

In the afternoon, hail one of Chiang Mai’s emblematic red taxi trucks — to get to Doi Suthep, the mountain towering over the city. The climb to the top culminates in views from Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a gilded, hilltop Buddhist temple complex. Finish back in town with a late dinner at Midnight Fried Chicken, which dishes up poultry with distinctly northern Thai sides: sticky rice and two types of nam phrik (spicy dipping sauces).

Spend your second day in Chiang Mai’s walled city, starting with coffee from Thai-grown beans at chic Akha Ama Phrasingh. Wat Phra Singh, arguably Chiang Mai’s most important Buddhist temple, is only steps away; don’t miss the early 19th-century Buddhist murals in Viharn Lai Kham, a chapel in the same compound. Outside the city walls you’ll find Tong Tem Toh, serving a hip take on local cuisine — order the northern-style spice hors d’oeuvre, small bites of grilled herbal sausage, pork, vegetables and nam phrik.

From here, go just south to Wat Suan Dok, a Buddhist temple where you can take part in ‘monk chat’, an informal language exchange with novice monks, offering a fascinating insight into Thai culture and Buddhism. Then, for a laid-back dinner try Chang Phuak Gate Night Market — Cowboy Hat Lady’s braised pork hock on rice is well worth queueing for.

Spend a final morning wandering Pratu Chiang Mai Market by the old south gate, including the outdoor section, where vendors sell produce in front of crumbling temple ruins. At lunchtime, stop off at Huen Jai Yong, outside the city proper. Located in and around a temple-like teak and stucco structure, ringed by rice fields, it serves northern Thai-style dips, soups and other homely dishes.

Wind down before your evening journey with a massage at the Northern School for the Blind or the Women’s Massage Center, where proceeds go to good causes. After that, hop on a train to Lampang. Relatively few visitors make it here, but this riverside former logging outpost is quite charming — particularly Thanon Talat Gao, a road parallel to the Wang River, lined with a combination of northern Thai, Burmese and Chinese architectural styles. If you’re in town on a Saturday evening, hit the Walking Street Market for a casual dinner. Alternatively, head to Aroy One Baht, a rambling old house serving Chinese-influenced dishes such as aubergine flash-fried with fermented soybeans, or a spicy salad revolving around salted eggs.

Days 4-5: Lampang & Phrae

The next morning, visit century-old Kao Chao Market. Built as a depot for produce transported by rail, it’s a time capsule and an introduction to ingredients such as conical wild bamboo shoots and jackfruits the size of labradors. For breakfast, hit one of the tiny stalls serving rustic coffee and sweets.

Pop into Baan Sao Nak, a restored 19th-century mansion, for an insight into the lives — and furniture — of northern Thai nobility. Within walking distance is Khun Manee, a family-run factory producing khao taen — a Lampang speciality of deep-fried sticky rice cakes drizzled with palm sugar. For lunch, rustic-and-delicious Raan Sai Ua Mae Chan Dee is a grill shack on Suandok Road, in the middle of the city. Look out for sai ua, a herb-packed northern Thai sausage, or aep, banana leaf-wrapped minced meat and herbs.  

Afterwards, take a taxi to Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation Hospital, where there are no questionable shows or public feedings, but you can see elephants recovering from injuries. Finish up at the buzzy Evening Market, at the northern end of Ratsada Phisek Bridge, where you can find curries and other dishes bagged up and ready to take away.

Kick off your last day in Lampang with a late breakfast/early lunch at Khanom Jeen Pa Bun Sri on Thanon Talat Gao. Khanom jeen is a dish of thin rice noodles in a tomato-based broth that’s a staple in this region, and Pa Bun Sri does a deliciously smoky, savoury version. From here, take a taxi just outside town to the Dhanabadee Ceramic Museum. This family-run factory is one of the longest-running producers of the iconic chaam traa kai, small ceramic bowls featuring a hand-painted cockerel; there’s a gift shop, too. Continue to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang — one of the most important and impressive Buddhist temples in the north — before returning to Lampang train station to journey to Phrae.  

This may just be the friendliest city in Thailand, but there’s no train station; the closest is in Den Chai, 15 miles away, where buses and taxis are available. Once in Phrae, head to Kua Jinsod, in a rural-feeling area west of the centre. This semi-open-air restaurant is one of the best places in the region for laab, finely minced meat with herbs and spices.  

Day 6: Phrae

For your final morning, head to Slope Coffee, a cafe in a rambling, charmingly crumbling wooden structure in Phrae’s historic centre. Afterwards, explore the quiet, leafy streets and visit Vongburi House Museum or Wichai Ratcha Residence, both former lumber barons’ mansions. For an early lunch, go to Duang Nate Noodle for khanom jeen noodles in a porky broth, or tomatoey rice garnished with chunks of deep-fried pork rind and drizzled with garlic oil — dishes found only in Phrae. They tend to sell out before midday.

Spend the afternoon three miles north of Phrae in Thung Hong, a village known for indigo dyeing. Countless shops sell suea maw hawm, a local indigo work shirt, and on certain days you can watch the dyeing firsthand at Mohom Ban Pa Luang, a tiny, family-run factory. If it’s Saturday, pick up something to eat at Phrae’s Walking Street Market, along a main road in the historic centre. Otherwise, Kad Phra Non, on the same street, serves northern Thai dishes, from meaty curries to spicy salads. From there, backtrack to Den Chai for the night train to Bangkok.

Authorities plan alternate channel in Baltimore Harbor

Route seen as important step in reopening port..

A temporary channel for essential uses was under preparation Sunday night in the Baltimore Harbor, which was blocked by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, officials said.

The Captain of the Port “is preparing to establish a temporary alternate channel” near the Key Bridge for “commercially essential vessels,” officials in charge of the bridge response said in a news release.

It was not clear exactly how the alternate channel was to be created, when it could be opened or what vessels would be classified as essential. No information was immediately available on whether weight and size limits would be imposed for use of the alternate route.

Also unclear was whether the channel could be used by any cargo ships docking at Baltimore, or whether it would be restricted to vessels involved in the effort to recover from the bridge collapse.

Specifications given in the news release suggest that the alternate channel might not be deep enough for vessels other than barges or similar craft.

The collapse of the bridge after it was struck by a container ship closed the harbor and authorities said it has caused major problems for the economy of both the Baltimore region and for the rest of the United States.

Creation of an alternate channel “will mark an important first step along the road to reopening the port of Baltimore,” said Coast Guard Capt. David O’Connell, the federal on-scene coordinator for response to the bridge collapse.

“By opening this alternate route, we will support the flow of marine traffic into Baltimore,” O’Connell said.

The alternate channel would “be marked with government lighted aids to navigation and will have a controlling depth of 11 feet, a 264-foot horizontal clearance, and vertical clearance (of) 96 feet,” according to the statement issued by the joint information center for the Key Bridge response.

The temporary alternate channel is to be northeast of the main channel and in the vicinity of the bridge, officials said.

The statement issued Sunday appeared to be the first since Tuesday’s collapse of the bridge into the Patapsco River that envisioned a bypass of the most heavily affected area.

Heretofore, authorities’ principal efforts at the site appeared involved with clearing the wreckage as well as searching for the remains of those workers still missing and presumed dead.

Authorities said preparing the alternate channel was “part of a phased approach to opening the main channel.”

A container ship rammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore around 1:30 a.m. on March 26, 2024, causing a portion of the bridge to collapse into Baltimore Harbor. Officials called the event a mass casualty and were searching for people in the waters of the busy port.

This event occurred less than a year after a portion of Interstate 95 collapsed in north Philadelphia during a truck fire. That disaster was initially expected to snarl traffic for months, but a temporary six-lane roadway was constructed in 12 days to serve motorists while a permanent overpass was rebuilt.

U.S. cities often face similar challenges when routine wear and tear , natural disasters or major accidents damage roads and bridges. Transportation engineer Lee D. Han explains how planners, transit agencies and city governments anticipate and manage these disruptions.

How do agencies plan for disruptions like this?

Planning is a central mission for state and metropolitan transportation agencies.

Traditional long-term planning focuses on anticipating and preparing for growing and shifting transportation demand patterns. These changes are driven by regional and national economic and population trends.

Shorter-term planning is about ensuring mobility and safety during service disruptions. These events can include construction, major scheduled events like music festivals , traffic incidents such as crashes and hazardous material spills, emergency evacuations , and events like the bridge collapse in Baltimore.

Agencies have limited resources, so they typically set priorities based on how likely a given scenario is, its potential adverse effects and the countermeasures that officials have available.

For bridges, the Federal Highway Administration sets standards and requires states to carry out periodic inspections. In addition, agencies develop a detouring plan for each bridge in case of a structural failure or service disruption. In Baltimore, Key Bridge traffic will be routed through two tunnels that pass under the harbor, but trucks carrying hazardous materials will have to take longer detours.

Major bridges, such as those at Mississippi River crossings, are crucial to the nation’s economy and security. They require significant planning, commitment and coordination between multiple agencies. There usually are multiple contingency plans in place to deal with immediate traffic control, incident response and field operations during longer-term bridge repair or reconstruction projects.

What are some major challenges of rerouting traffic?

Bridges are potential choke points in highway networks. When a bridge fails, traffic immediately stops and begins to flow elsewhere, even without a formal detouring plan. Transportation agencies need to build or find excess capacity before a bridge fails, so that the disrupted traffic has alternative routes.

This is usually manageable in major urban areas that have many parallel routes and bridges and built-in redundancy in their road networks. But for rural areas, failure of a major bridge can mean extra hours or even days of travel.

When traffic has to be rerouted off an interstate highway, it can cause safety and access problems. If large trucks are diverted to local streets that were not designed for such vehicles, they may get stuck on railroad tracks or in spaces too small for them to turn around. Heavy trucks can damage roads and bridges with low weight limits, and tall trucks may be too large to fit through low-clearance underpasses.

Successful rerouting requires a lot of coordination between agencies and jurisdictions. They may have to adjust road signal timing to deal with extra cars and changed traffic patterns. Local drivers may need to be directed away from these alternative routes to prevent major congestion.

It’s also important to communicate with navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze , which every driver has access to. Route choices that speed up individual trips may cause serious congestion if everyone decides to take the same alternate route and it doesn’t have enough capacity to handle the extra traffic.

Can these events permanently change commuting and traffic patterns?

In some cases, yes. Some repairs take months, such as the 2022 crack in the I-40 Hernando De Soto Bridge across the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tennessee. Others can stretch over years, such as the 2007 collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis. Some structures are rebuilt elsewhere, like the I-880 Cypress Street viaduct in Oakland, California, which collapsed during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

While traffic is disrupted, motorists change their commute patterns or may even switch to other modes, such as buses or commuter rail. But after repairs are completed, even if some commuters don’t return to their old routes, new traffic soon will take advantage of the restored capacity. In the end, it’s hard to tell just by looking at usage whether commuters have changed their travel patterns permanently.

Will money from the 2021 infrastructure bill reduce the risk of these kinds of events?

Unfortunately, things do fall apart. U.S. infrastructure has been deteriorating for decades . The American Road & Transportation Builders Association has estimated that 1 in 3 U.S. bridges need repair .

At the current rate, we are unlikely to catch up to a state of good repair any time soon. But strategic investments like the 2021 infrastructure bill can likely help repair and address critical deterioration concerns for some high-risk bridges, roads, dams and other structures.

Can public transit fill part of the gap?

Public transit may be able to fill the gap in several ways when key roadway links are destroyed or damaged.

Fixed-route rail transit services, such as Washington, D.C.’s Metro and commuter rail services in Chicago, typically have exclusive rights of way, which let them travel at higher speed than buses on surface streets. They also have high capacity that can be increased by adding more cars to each train or running trains more frequently.

If those systems’ routes are not disrupted due to something like a bridge collapse, they may be able to operate above their normal loads. Drivers can shift to transit as long as their trip origins and destinations are conveniently located near transit stations.

Bus transit services don’t usually have exclusive rights of way or means to add extra carrying capacity per vehicle. But they have more flexibility to extend the service areas that they cover and connect otherwise non-walkable locales.

Coordinating use of various transit services and creatively adjusting bus lines could address some local travel needs, such as daily commutes and school and shopping trips. But local public transit services struggle to fill longer-distance gaps that extend beyond their service areas.

In major urban areas like Philadelphia that have large populations and have invested a lot in their transit systems, public transit could carry as much as 25% of daily commute trips. But for disruptions outside of major cities, such as a bridge collapse on an interstate highway in a rural area, public transit probably won’t have much of a role.

It’s also important to note that public transit services are for moving people. Freight shipments, which rely on trucks and other specialized vehicles, also need to get through or around disrupted zones. This often requires large commercial trucks either to use nearby local streets that weren’t designed for such big, heavy vehicles, or to make long-distance detours. That increases delays, pollution, safety risks and transportation costs that will eventually be passed on to consumers.

Baltimore Opens Temporary Shipping Route Around Key Bridge Wreckage

The temporary alternate channel will be able to accommodate some barges and tugboats but not larger vessels, the authorities said.

Officials in Baltimore opened a temporary channel on Monday to help restore some traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore, one of the nation’s busiest commercial shipping hubs .

The alternate channel will allow some essential vessels to bypass wreckage from the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge, which has been blocking the harbor’s main channel since it was hit by a giant cargo ship last week .

The temporary channel was announced late Sunday by the state and federal agencies leading the disaster response and confirmed in a news conference on Monday afternoon.

“Today was an important milestone in the process of beginning to pull the wreckage out, beginning to open up channels,” Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland said. “We know we still have more work to do.”

Some barges and tugboats that had been trapped in the harbor will pass through the channel on Monday evening, Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath of the U.S. Coast Guard said. Still, at a depth of 11 feet, the new lane can accommodate only a fraction of the traffic that typically passes through the port.

The authorities are surveying a second alternative channel on the other side of the bridge, Admiral Gilreath said, which would have a depth of “around 15 to 16 feet,” allowing somewhat larger vessels.

Officials said that the opening of a third alternate channel, with a depth of 20 to 25 feet, was dependent on the daunting work being done at the moment: the clearing of heavy bridge debris.

“Once that’s opened, that should allow us to move almost all of our tug and barge traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore,” Admiral Gilreath said. “I don’t have a timeline other than we’re going to do it as fast as we possibly can,” he added, explaining that clearing that third channel involved cutting through and lifting heavy steel girders.

Salvage experts have said that clearing debris around the wrecked structure in the Patapsco River is likely to take weeks. It’s unclear how much longer it will take for shipping to reach normal levels.

OAKLAND — A plan to rename Oakland International Airport and include San Francisco in the name has drawn flack from its bigger Bay Area rival, marking an unusual conflict among the region’s aviation hubs.

San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport would be the new name for the East Bay travel complex , according to the plan proposed by the Port of Oakland, which operates the airport.

The proposal has prompted San Francisco International Airport to say it is worried about the plan for a new moniker.

“We are deeply concerned about the potential for customer confusion and disservice that could result from this proposed renaming,” said Ivar Satero, director of San Francisco International Airport. “We anticipate the new name being considered by the Metropolitan Oakland International Airport will cause confusion for the public, either through a misunderstanding of its physical location or its perceived relationship to SFO.”

“SFO has operated since 1927 and has used the name ‘San Francisco Airport’ or ‘San Francisco International Airport’ for most of its history, making it immediately recognizable to customers,” Satero added.

The airport is not actually in the city from which it derives its name. SFO is located instead in San Mateo County, south of San Francisco. And East Bay aviation officials say a new name would help bolster the profile of the Oakland travel hub.

“The Port of Oakland is considering a name modification to boost inbound travelers’ geographic awareness of the airport’s location on the San Francisco Bay,” said Barbara Leslie, president of the Port Commission.

In 2023, San Francisco International Airport handled slightly fewer than 50.2 million passengers, up 18.7% from 2022. Oakland International Airport, meanwhile, handled 11.24 million passengers last year, up just 0.8% from 2022.

“This will protect our airport’s over 30,000 good-paying, direct jobs and $1.6 billion in economic impact on the region,” Leslie said of the name change.

At least one airline says it backs the name change.

“Oakland helped put us on the map in California,” said Jennifer Bridie, director of marketing communications and strategy for Southwest Airlines. “We’re wholeheartedly supportive of this rebranding.”

The Port of Oakland Commission is slated to consider the name change at an April 11 meeting. The airport will retain its aviation code of OAK, regardless of the fate of the proposed name change.

The East Bay airport wants to be certain that passengers are aware it is near an array of destinations in the Bay Area. The lower profile of the airport has made it tougher for the travel hub to retain routes that it attracts.

From July 2008 to March 2024, Oakland added 54 new routes. Of these, 39 were lost. Six destinations that pre-dated mid-2008 were also lost.

“Market research and interviews with airline partners have shown that routes have not performed as well as they should have due to the lack of geographic awareness, making air carriers reluctant to sustain and add new routes in Oakland,” Port of Oakland Interim Director of Aviation Craig Simon said.
