Cruise the 1000 islands.

One of the best ways to experience the 1000 Islands Ontario is on a boat cruise! They leave out of a few different ports including Gananoque, Ivy, and Rockport. The boat tours generally run from May through October.

A 1000 Islands Gananoque cruise is one of the most popular. There are a number of boat tours to choose from, including one hour, three hours, and a five-hour cruise. Depending on which one you choose, you’ll see a variety of the top sights in the Thousand Islands. Plus, you’ll hear all about the area, its history, and interesting facts.

On many of the cruises the boat passes generational cottages, the Statue of St. Lawrence, and the 1000 Islands Tower. There’s even a Millionaire’s Row, just like the ones found on a Muskoka boat cruise, where you’ll see stunning summer homes. Plus, keep an eye out for a wealth of bird life like osprey, cormorants, and the occasional eagle.

A top 1000 Islands Gananoque cruise is the 5-hour boat tour that includes a stop over at Bolt Castle. This tour includes all of the top sights and lets you explore the grounds and famous castle on Heart Island. However, a valid passport is needed as the castle is part of the United States.

Another great spot to explore the islands on a boat cruise is from Rockport. This charming village boasts a number of boat tours as well. You can choose between a 1 hour, 2 hours, or the 4-hour Boldt Castle Tour which includes a stopover to explore the island. Plus, there’s also a sunset cruise available.

Soar high above on one of the 1000 Islands Helicopter Tours ! If you’re looking for unique things to do in the Thousand Island then a helicopter tour is it. Get a bird’s eye view of the islands, Bolt Castle, the 1000 Islands Tower, and more cool sights.

Taking a helicopter tour gives you a new perspective of the area. Plus, you can’t beat those views! They run year-round, so it doesn’t matter when you visit.

Like the boat tours, there’s a number of tours to choose from. The classic Bolt Castle & Thousand Islands Tour offers all the classic sights. Hike the Thousand Islands National Park

Nestled within the region is the Thousand Islands National Park. Comprised of a group of around 20 islands as well as mainland, this park is full of awesome places to hike. Along with many of the islands being home to trails, you’ll find various places to hike along the 1000 Islands Parkway.

Fun Fact: The islands are the tops of ancient mountains that have worn-down over time.

Jones Creek Trails

One of the best places to hike in the Thousand Islands National Park is the Jones Creek Trails . There are 12 kilometers of trails, each range from easy to moderate. You’ll find a mix of terrain, including various tree species, rugged rock walls, wetlands, bird and wildlife, as well as scenic views. Each of the trails are named after animals to pay respect to the clans of the Haudenosaunee people.

There are two access points to Jones Creek Trails. One is off of County Road 5 and the other is off of the 1000 Islands Parkway. I highly recommend the one off the Parkway. You can manage the looping trails in roughly 2 hours. Make sure to soak in the lookout from the Heron Loop. Sit in the Parks Canada red chairs and look out over the wetlands.

Landon Bay Lookout

Another great place to hike is Landon Bay which is 10 minutes east of Gananoque. The park showcases the best of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere that the National Park is part of. Landon Bay is home to 7 trails. A great one that passes many of the park’s highlights is the Donevan Trail. At 4.3 km, this loop trail brings you over a lover’s bridge and by a Wishing Tree, which is much different than the one in Sudbury . Plus, you can do the short detour to the lookout.

If you’re looking for a quick hike, then you can do the lookout in under an hour. Take the trailhead next to the old stone arch. While mostly all uphill, the views from the top are awesome! The Landon Bay lookout is one of the best views of the Thousand Islands. Standing atop a giant rock, the view sweeps over the bay and the islands.

Mallorytown Landing

At the Thousand Island National Park Visitor Centre is where you’ll find two more trails. There are two Mallorytown Landing trails. One is the Smoky Fire Trail and the other is the Six Nations Trail. Both are short, at roughly 1 km.

Confederation Park in Gananoque

Explore Gananoque

The heart of the Thousand Islands is Gananoque. Known as one of the most charming Ontario towns , Gananoque is the best place to base yourself while exploring the region.

You’ll find many of the region’s attractions in town like cruises, museums, and more. There are so many fun things to do in Gananoque , that you’ll want to spend a few days.

A great start is a wander along King Street to explore downtown Gananoque. Downtown is full of fabulous restaurants, coffee shops, and cool shops. I love browsing all the vintage boutiques like Drawing Room Vintage. If you’re a book lover like me then be sure to pop into Beggars Banquet Books.

Another must stop in town is Confederation Park. The park is located downtown and runs along the Gananoque River. Dotting the park is the Sculpture Gallery, which is the largest outdoor contemporary art exhibit in Canada. Created by local artists, each piece symbolizes the history or environment of the town and region.

Street art fans keep an eye out! Downtown Gananoque is home to a number of cool murals. A walkway beside Pho Hut is home to a few pieces and more can be found flanking the Visitor’s Center. Plus, there’s more scattered around town.

As one of the towns along the St. Lawrence River, Gananoque has a picturesque waterfront too! Take a stroll along the water for views of the river and islands. At the bottom of Main Street stroll west along the water towards Joel Stone Park. This quaint park is home to an adorable lighthouse and a great spot to soak in a sunset.

tickets for the Sound of Music at the Thousand Islands Playhouse Theatre

See a Show at Thousand Islands Playhouse

CBC Radio said the Thousand Islands Playhouse is, “the most charming theatre in Canada.” To which I wholeheartedly agree! Sitting in our seats, my father and I felt like we were surrounded by a thriving community. Everyone knew everyone. My Dad even tapped a lady on the shoulder in front of us to introduce ourselves. As someone who’s a big fan of theatre, this was a completely different buzz than others I’d attended. The atmosphere was a warm and welcoming, with a real homey vibe.

The Thousand Islands Playhouse is a seasonal theatre company located on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. Sharing live performances for over 40, it’s known as Canada’s dockside theatre. So, if you’re visiting the area by boat then arrive by water and pull on up to the theatre dock!

Along with a dock, the Playhouse is home to two of the longest waterfront patios in Gananoque! Sit and enjoy a drink before the show and soak in those sweeping water views.

There are two theatres at the Playhouse, each with a unique history. The Firehall Theatre is set within the old Gananoque Armories building which dates to 1913. Built in 1909, the Springer Theatre, the larger of the two, was originally the home of the Gananoque Canoe Club.

During my visit, my father and I saw The Sound of Music . We were blown away by the immense talent found on stage. The vocals and the passion were astounding!

If you’re looking for things to do in the Thousand Islands at night, taking in a performance at the Thousand Islands Playhouse is the perfect way to end your day!

The theatre generally runs between June and November. Other performances taking place in 2023 include Intimate Apparel , Once , and The Runner .

Kayak the Thousand Islands National Park

Along with exploring the National Park by foot, a great way to experience it is by kayak. Being part of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve, the park is home to a diverse mix of wildlife that are a treat to see on the water. While paddling you can spot herons fishing along the shore. Other wildlife that calls the area home include beaver, mink, loons, turtles, and more.

Visitors will find a number of access points to launch a kayak, if you have your own. However, there are a few companies that offer rentals and guided tours. One is 1000 Islands Kayaking. Whether you’re an avid paddler or beginner, 1000 Islands Kayaking has a tour for you!

They have half day and full day tours available. By booking a guided kayak visitors an opportunity to paddle around the Admiralty Islands. Along the tour you’ll learn about the area’s history and geology. Plus, it’s a great way for beginners to feel comfortable out on the water with the guidance of experienced paddlers.

For those looking to enjoy some quiet time exploring the park by water, a self-guided kayak is ideal. Rent a kayak and set off to explore the islands. You can paddle over shipwrecks or through tranquil coves. The possibilities are endless.

Travel Tip: 1000 Islands Kayaking tours are available from mid-May through October.

view from the 1000 Islands Tower

1000 Islands Tower

Built in 1965, the 1000 Islands Tower is one of the top attractions in the Thousand Islands. Perched atop Hill Island in Canada, the tower is under 700 meters from the New York State border.

Also known as the Skydeck, this concrete observation tower stands 130 metres (426 feet) and commands one of the best views of the region.

You’ll start your visit at ground level in the tower’s gift shop. Browsing the shop, you’ll find an array of fun Canadian souvenirs. There’s everything from plush beavers to Thousand Islands dressing.

As someone who is not the fondest of heights, I was a bundle of excited nerves. However, I have to give a big thank you to the kind staff. I spoke to a lovely woman working the counter who quickly eased my nerves.

Next up is the 40 second elevator ride that delivers you to the first of three observation decks. The first is enclosed in glass. It features a variety of information about the sights and history of the area and tower. For the next two viewpoints you’ll ascend a few flights of stairs. Both of these are open air lookouts that give you an epic 360-degree views. On a clear day you can see for 60 km, with views of both Ontario and New York!

I am so thankful I did it and felt beyond comfortable on each of the three observation decks! So, if you’re afraid of heights, please don’t let that stop you from experiencing these incredible views!

The tower is open seasonally from May through October.

Travel Tip: To access the 1000 Islands Tower you have to cross the Thousand Islands International Bridge. It’s a toll bridge with a cost of just under $5 CAD.

aboard the Limit Up on an antique boat tour with Thousand Islands Boat Museum

Take an Antique Boat Tour

Gananoque is home to a couple of great museums. One of them is the Thousand Islands Boat Museum. The museum has a perfect location on the waterfront. Across four buildings, the Boat Museum celebrates Gananoque’s history of boat building. There’s a boat building workshop, children’s activity center, and exhibit galleries. This hands-on museum is great to visit for all ages!

The best feature of the museum is the In-Water Gallery where you’ll find over 20 antique wooden boats floating in the water. Next each boat you’ll find information plaques sharing their history and story. During my visit I was able to hop aboard the 1935 Windswept III that spent most of its life in the Muskoka lakes . This stunning boat has bedrooms, a kitchen, and separate quarters for the staff.

But that’s not the coolest part of this museum! The museum offers one of the most unique things to do in the Thousand Islands, take a tour of the islands on an antique boat! My father and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour aboard the Limit Up! This speedy little craft is one of the best examples of recreational boats. At 22 feet long, a beautiful Mahogany hull, and a 275-horsepower V8, the Limit Up blends stunning design with speed. Oh, and the emerald green seats are some of the most comfortable I’ve ever sat in!

You can book a boat tour through the museum too! Tours take you around the islands near Gananoque. You’ll have a knowledgeable local guide to share all the fun and interesting details about the islands, cottages, and the people who have and still call the area home.

pizza at The Purple House Cafe in Gananoque

Dine at the Best Restaurants

With all the fun activities in the Thousands Islands you’re going to need fuel. If you’ve based yourself in Gananoque you’ll be delighted with the diverse range of places to eat. There’s a place to suit everyone’s appetite and dietary needs.

One of the best Gananoque restaurants is Riva ! Set in a stunning historic building, this Italian restaurant features two dreamy garden patios as well as an interior dining room with a fireplace and various cozy spots. Along with a long wine list, the menu boasts an array of dishes that include pastas, meats and pizzas.

However, the best pizza in Gananoque is at The Purple House Cafe ! This vibrant and colourful building has a cool interior space and an outdoor pizza oven. I highly recommend sitting on their gorgeous garden patio that’s lit by fairy lights at night.

For a mix of Canadian classics and Czech cuisine head over to the Maple Leaf Restaurant . This homey restaurant serves the best schnitzel I’ve had outside of Europe! For over 30 years the restaurant has been a staple in downtown Gananoque.

If you’re looking for a light lunch or some delicious baked goods then there are a few cafes to choose from. My favourite is Pistachio Café for their sandwiches, sweet treats, and local gelato. Plus, they have such a cool vibe inside and a huge patio. Another great choice is Panache Bakery & Café ! While they aren’t open for indoor dining, you’ll find a variety of tasty take away options. I loved their Danishes!

Salad with Thousand Islands Dressing

Eat a Salad with Thousand Islands Dressing

It’s not surprising that the best salads with Thousand Islands dressing I’ve eaten have all been in the region! So, celebrate the quirky salad dressing by adding it to your menu while visiting. I suggest ordering it at the Maple Leaf Restaurant, mine was fantastic!

But do you know where the dressing originated? There are a variety of stories, all with a common theme that it was first made in the region of the 1000 Islands.

The most famous story is that George Bolt, the man behind Bolt Castle and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, was served it by his chef while summering in the region. It’s said that he enjoyed it so much that when he returned to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel he instructed them to put it on the menu.

Thousand Islands Parkway lookout

Take a Scenic Drive Along the Thousand Islands Parkway

One of the best scenic drives in Ontario is along the Thousand Islands Parkway! The scenic route hugs the northern shore of the St. Lawrence River. Running between Gananoque and Brockville, it’s home to many of the top things to do in the 1000 Islands region!

The Parkway is approximately 40 km and travel through the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve as well as the Thousand Islands National Park. Dotting the road are lookouts, historic plaques, small towns, and so much more!

If you’re travelling from Gananoque the perfect first stop is Gray’s Beach Lookout. The riverside park has picnic tables and a lovely little beach. However, if you’re looking for some beach time, get there early to grab a spot.

Next up along the parkway is Landon Bay. I highly recommend tackling the short lookout hike for panoramic views! Another one of the must-stops on the Thousand Islands Parkway is Mallorytown Landing. Here you’ll find the Thousand Islands National Park Visitor’s Centre as well as a couple of short and easy hiking trails.

Two other places along the Parkway is the charming riverside community of Rockport and the 1000 Islands Tower.

1000 Islands History Museum

Never have I been so impressed with a small local museum then I have with the 1000 Islands History Museum. Set along the picturesque waterfront in Gananoque, the museum is located within a stunning Victorian home known as the Arthur Child building.

Inside you’ll find a number of floors that showcase the stories and history of the 1000 Islands and Gananoque. The History Museum takes visitors back 10,000 years ago to when the area was the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee First Peoples.

Following along through the well laid out museum, that’s filled with fun interactive exhibits, you’ll learn about so much more. There are exhibits on everything from the War of 1812 to the wealth of wildlife found in the region.

views from Rockport

Visit Rockport

One of my favourite places in the Thousand Islands is Rockport! This charming riverside village is one of the hidden gems in southeastern Ontario.

Known as the ‘Heart of the 1000 Islands,’ Rockport is surprisingly full of things to do! Along with being one of the places to board a boat cruise, there’s a few of great restaurants, Cornwall’s Pub, Island View Waterfront Restaurant, and the Boathouse Country Inn.

Rockport also has some cute little hiking trails. There are four loop trails, each highlight the village’s history as well as viewpoints. I loved the St. Brendan’s Loop that leads you up to an adorable church, who’s named after the patron saint of sailors, as well as a great lookout.

Keep an eye out for murals too! The most iconic one is of a ship’s haul being built. The mural pays homage to Andress Boat Works, a local builder that was established in 1921 and is still in business today.

I also recommend browsing the Rockport General Store. Built in 1905, the store was vital in the community. Now the general store is more of a gift shop with a variety of souvenirs, local treats, and other items.

Travel Tip: If you’re looking for a fun Thousand Islands day trip from Ottawa, Rockport is the perfect place. It’s a 1.5-hour drive and gives you a taste of what the region has to offer.

Joel Stone Beach in Gananoque

Have a Beach Day

Planning to visit in the summer? If you’re looking to soak in some sun then you’ll love the variety of beaches in the Thousand Islands!

One of the best beaches is Joel Stone Beach . Located just minutes from downtown Gananoque, this beach is great for a number of reasons. It’s close to other attractions and restaurants. Plus, there’s a splash pad and public washrooms.

Along the Thousand Islands Parkway are a few other beautiful sandy beaches. Gray’s Beach is a short drive from downtown Gananoque and a favourite of locals. The park features a picnic area, lookout and free parking. However, the beach is small, so be sure to arrive early during peak season.

In Mallorytown, across from the Jones Creek Trails, is Brown’s Bay . This sandy beach slopes into the St. Lawrence River and is another great one for families. Amenities in the park include picnic tables, washrooms, and more. Plus, you can see Singer Castle from the beach!

ArBru Brewery in Mallorytown

Drink at a Solar Powered Brewery

Did you know that the Thousand Islands is home to Canada’s first solar powered brewery? In the community of Mallorytown sits an unassuming barn. If you peek around the corner, you’ll see a large patio, a set of solar panels and hops growing. This gem is ArBru , one of the most unique breweries in Ontario!

Owner Phil Audet studied sustainable energy engineering in Ireland and went on to own a solar power installation company. But he also had a passion for craft beer. So, it’s no surprise he created a fully off grid brewery.

Inside you’ll find a cool and eclectic vibe. ArBru serves up a variety of unique beers that come poured, by the can, or in a flight of four. A favourite is their Summer Blonde, which is a refreshing beer with a hint of citrus. They also have one called Stands with Ukraine that has $1 for each can sold going to the Gananoque Refugee Settlement.

This eco-conscious brewery is committed to the planet and doing more than using solar power. For every beer purchased a tree is planted!

Along with beer, ArBru serves up some of the best pizza in the area. You can choose from a long list of tasty wood fired pizza as well as other snacks like wood-fired soft pretzels.

Travel Tips: ArBru is open Wednesday through Sunday, so plan your trip accordingly. And is dog friendly!

The Tipsy Goat Market in Lansdowne

Explore Lansdowne

Another one of the adorable villages in the region that beg to be explored is Lansdowne! Located north of County Road 2, Lansdowne is surrounded by rural country roads filled with farms and wild turkeys. Yes, I saw plenty of baby turkey chicks while driving nearby!

In the heart of the village, you’ll find a cute red shop called Hilltop Coffee Stop. Pop in to grab a cup of Joe and wander town. You’ll find a couple of great shops like Gramma Had That, an antique store. One shop that is a must visit is the Tipsy Goat Market .

The Tipsy Goat Market is run by a lovely couple that are the perfect blend of Canada meets the US. Leah, the resident artist is originally from Kingston and her husband, Dan, is the resident BBQ sauce junkie from Kansas City. Their shop is set within a historic building that’s seen a variety of businesses including menswear and hardware store. It’s now a welcoming shade of purple!

Inside you’ll find a mix of products that include antiques, local artisan items, and cool international finds. There’s everything from clothing to jewelry and locally made soaps to the best barbeque sauce.

There are more fun things to do in Lansdowne! If you’re visiting during the summer, plan your trip around the Lansdowne Fair. In addition, you can also do a self-guided historic walking tour of Lansdowne .

Lansdowne is also home to a one of the best Ontario parks in the region, Charleston Lake Provincial Park . The park is home to campgrounds, beaches, and awesome hiking trails. One must hike is the Blue Mountain Trail that takes you to the highest point in the county. Plus, on a clear day you can see the Adirondack Mountains!

One of the best places to stay in the Thousand Islands is the Gananoque Inn & Spa . Set on the shores of the St. Lawrence River, this historic inn dates to 1896. The Inn features a full-service spa and two restaurants that overlook the water. Rooms at the Gananoque Inn are spacious with comfortable beds. Some even boast fireplaces and balconies with river views.

I loved my stay at the Inn; the front desk staff were helpful and friendly. Even though my room didn’t have a balcony, my window offered a view of the river. A couple of things to note, there is no elevator and no fridge in the room.

What area makes up the Thousand Islands

The Thousand Islands constitute a North American archipelago of 1,864 islands that straddles the Canada–US border in the Saint Lawrence River. The region stretches for about 50 miles (80 km) downstream from Kingston, Ontario, with most islands existing between Alexandria Bay and Cape Vincent in the US and between Kingston and Rockport on the Canadian side.

What Constitutes an Island?

To be considered an island, a piece of land must stay above water throughout the year, be at least one sq foot and support a living tree.

The islands of the 1000 Islands range in size from 40 square miles to smaller islands occupied by a single resident or uninhabited grouping of rocks.

The smallest inhabited island is known as “Just Room Enough” or Hub Island, believed to be around 3,300 sq feet.

When is the best time to visit the Thousand Islands

Although temperatures dip into single digits in the heart of winter, the region can be enjoyed year-round. It is primarily a summer vacation spot, but fall proves to be a beautiful time to visit for fall festivals, pumpkin patches, and stunning foliage.

Spring: Ice usually melts in late March to early April. You can start to see large ships making their way down the seaway and head outdoors for the first cozy outdoor campfires of the year. Temperatures in early spring reach highs in the low 40s, while May usually sees highs in the upper 60s and lows in the low to mid-40s.

Summer: Many seasonal activities are ramping up for the summer season, usually May-early September. Flowers will be booming, but crowds will be thick. Temperatures are in the high 80s to lows in the upper 50s.

Fall: A great time to visit as fall crowds are fewer after kids go back to school. Many seasonal businesses close after Labor Day, but new fall-themed attractions pop up through November. Temps in early fall are in the low 70s to mid-40s.

Winter: Many activities stop running, but new activities such as snowmobiling, Ice fishing, and skiing are introduced. Temps range from highs in the upper to low 30s and lows in the teens and single digits.

The 1000 Islands encompasses a group of islands along the St. Lawrence River as well as mainland Canada and USA. In the 1000 Islands boating is not just an activity, it is a way of life. This is an area where some people own private islands, while others flock to the harbor front to enjoy the blissful Summer months. Due to its’ location, straddling Northern New York State and Southern Ontario, the 1000 Islands is a seasonal destination. In the Summer, the 1000 Islands has many tourists and seasonal owners. Yet, in the Winter, the towns in the 1000 Islands, Clayton and Alexandria Bay, quiet down substantially. The 1000 Islands is the perfect destination if you’re looking for a weekend escape and a necessary stop on a Ontario or New York State road trip! Follow this  guide for the best things to do in 1000, NY.

Things To Do In 1000 Islands NY

Things to do in alexandria bay, ny.

Alexandria Bay is one of the most well known towns in the 1000 Islands. In the Summer, this town is flocked with tourists, and for good reason.  Many boat tours operate from Alexandria Bay, making it a great starting point to discover the area. There are plenty of of shops and restaurants in town to keep your busy after your boat tour.

One of the best parts of Alexandria Bay is its’ views of Boldt Castle. Spend some time on the Riverwalk, a short walkway with unobstructed views of the castle!

Things To Do In Clayton, NY

Clayton has a charming appeal. Riverside Drive, the main road in Clayton, is scattered with restaurants, shops and parks. It is the perfect place to enjoy a quiet afternoon or evening. Clayton has a nautical yet small town feel. Luxury boats scatter the harbor and people stroll leisurely through town.

1000 Islands

One of the best things to do in Clayton, NY is to stroll along the Riverside park in front of the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel. This park has a walkway as well as ample seating to enjoy the view. Relax at one of the adirondack chairs as you witness one of the most breathtaking sunset views!

1000 Islands Boat Cruise

One of the best ways things to do in Alexandria Bay is a  1000 Islands boat cruise. However, if you don’t have a boat of your own, there are plenty of boat cruises to choose from. I opted with the 2 nation tour through Uncle Sam Boat Tours .

This 1000 Islands boat cruise allowed us to enjoy the beautiful landscape and the impressive homes of Millionaire Row. This boat cruise gave me a sense of what this area is all about: nature meets luxury in the most spectacular way. While this boat tour cruised through US and Canadian waters, there is no need for a passport. The only place you will be docking is in Alexandria Bay or Heart Island. Visiting Heart Island is optional, yet highly recommended if you have never visited Boldt Castle. If you opt not to disembark at Heart Islands, you will still have wonderful views of the Island from the boat!

1000 Islands

Boldt Castle

Boldt Castle is located on Heart Islands and is an absolute must see for first time visitors in the 1000 Islands. The castle was formerly a privately owned mansion by George Boldt. Goerge Boldt was an American millionaire who managed the Waldorf Astoria in NYC! George Boldt built this castle for his wife, yet halted construction after her death. The 1000 Islands is continuously restoring and improving on Boldt Castle, which is now open to the public!

Boldt Castle is open seasonally and can be accessed via ferry or river cruise. On my first trip to the 1000 Islands, we took a direct ferry to Heart Island to explore the castle. On this trip, we opted to take a river cruise, gaining up close views of the castle.

1000 Islands

While you can’t visit Heart Islands during the off season, you can get a beautiful view from the Riverwalk in Alexandria Bay all year long!

1000 Islands

Wesley Island State Park

Be sure to spend some time enjoying nature at Wesley Island State Park. Wesley Island State Park’s nature center has various trails to discover. The trails are easy to moderate and absolutely beautiful! I felt that I was walking through an ethereal fairy land in Wesley Island State Park.

1000 Islands

I ended up taking four trails: the Friendship, Middle, Sand Cove and Eel Bay Trails. The loop I took was around 2 miles and the scenery was stunning. Friendship Trail is paved, which is perfect for small children and handicap accessibility. The Friendship Trails leads to a butterfly sanctuary, making it a must stop for all hikers! Middle and Sand Cove brought moss covered trails and scattering of woodland animals. And Eel Bay Trail offered views of the St. Lawrence River and cliff side overlooks.

Where To Eat

Bella’s is the perfect place to go for lunch in Clayton. This restaurant is absolutely darling. I loved its’ airy interior and the mismatched table clothes throughout the restaurant. Ask for a seat on the patio, which overlooks the St. Lawrence River. The patio is perfect even on a chilly day, there are blankets at each table and space heaters to keep you warm. The menu includes many delicious sandwiches and salads.

1000 Islands

The Seaway Grille

The Seaway Grille is the restaurant at the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel. This restaurant is great for three reasons: the food, views and ambiance. I suggest having dinner at the Seaway Grille, having one of the decadent entrees on the patio. If you’re lucky, you may catch some live music and a stunning sunset!

My 7 Favorite Stops On A 1000 Islands Road Trip

best place to visit in 1000 islands

Stunning views of the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, and adjoining waterways beg you to sit, take a deep breath, and simply enjoy the scenery. The relaxed pace of a 1000 Islands road trip, motoring along scenic byways past snug harbors and charming villages, is a wonderful way to wind down and venture off the grid.

We anchored our trip to 1000 Islands in Clayton; it is central to the other stops along the 1000 Islands coastline, affording easy access to all the wonderful adventures along the route. From Clayton, it was easy to head south to Henderson Harbor, Sackets Harbor, and Cape Vincent. When we ventured north and east, we encountered Alexandria Bay.

My favorite stops along our 1000 Islands road trip are grouped together by town and are in no particular order.

Note: Some information in this piece was obtained during a sponsored press trip, but all recommendations are my own.

Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York

1. Antique Boat Museum

If you love boats and boating, you will be enchanted by the Antique Boat Museum . Its collection has amassed over 320 boats along with thousands of boating artifacts. You can visit multiple exhibits including the National Motor Boat Show displays. Showcasing the evolution of pleasure boating in North America, the exhibit is filled with historic runabouts, cruisers, and other beautiful boats you will want to own. You’ll be quipping “she’s yar” when you get a look at some of these antique gems.

When you are ready to hit the water, you can enjoy a sunset cruise on the famous country music star Alan Jackson’s 30-foot Chris Craft Cruiser, Flat Top . Bring a small cooler with snacks and your favorite beverage for 2 hours of on-the-water relaxation. Sit back, pretend you are the star of your New York road trip, and enjoy the ride. Other boat experiences include a 45-minute Ride The River trip in a 30-foot, triple cockpit Hacker Craft; a 20-minute ride on the Pardon Me, a 48-foot custom runabout; and assorted rowing and sailing experiences. Reservations are required to enjoy these boating adventures.

2. Thousand Islands Art Center

If you love creating, you will enjoy taking an art class at the Thousand Islands Art Center . Explore your creative side by taking a class on bookbinding, basic knitting, weaving, drawing, painting, and other hands-on crafting classes. The class on my list is Expressive Textiles: Painting and Printing on Fabric — right up my alley.

The center also has two galleries displaying stunning handwoven textiles, a variety of artisan exhibits, and curated shows.

Classes are open to non-members, so why not make your own 1000 Islands souvenir?

Southwick Beach State Park in Henderson, New York

3. Southwick Beach State Park

Every vacation deserves a beach day and Southwick Beach State Park is ready for your blanket, picnic basket, and beach book. Like many wonderful state parks, Southwick offers a wide variety of services including campsites, cabins, pavilions, and bath facilities. In addition to swimming, you can enjoy fishing, hiking, and cross-country skiing in the winter.

Westcott Beach State Park in Henderson, New York

4. Westcott Beach State Park

Another great stop along Lake Ontario is Westcott Beach State Park . The park has a small beach, lots of green spaces, camping sites, pavilions, and bath facilities. A small boat marina adjacent to the beach is perfect for campers and day-trippers who want to put their boat in the water to drop a line and hook a black bass or two.

Commander's House at Sackets Harbor Battlefield

5. Sackets Harbor Battlefield

Sackets harbor.

Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site is a must-stop on your 1000 Islands road trip. The rolling green gives way to harbor views and imparts a peaceful stroll in the park. However, the battlefield history is quite different than what you experience today.

During the War of 1812, Sackets Harbor was the upper St. Lawrence River Valley and Lake Ontario center for U.S. military activity. It was a bustling community of militia, sailors, and shipbuilders constructing a large fleet to patrol the waterfront and prepare for the invasion of Canada.

Self-guided tours, with the help of strategic signage, impart the military history and battlefield maneuvers of this historic sight. In-season, guided tours are led by docents dressed in period military clothing to bring the area to life.

Sackets Harbor Battlefield is a picture-perfect spot to get out and walk, enjoy the pretty scenery, and learn a little history.

Tibbetts Point Lighthouse in Cape Vincent, New York

6. Tibbetts Point Lighthouse

Cape vincent.

Lighthouse hunters will love the charming Tibbetts Point Lighthouse . Built in 1827, Tibbetts Point Lighthouse is at the juncture of where Lake Ontario meets the St. Lawrence River. The lighthouse features an original Fresnel lens, one of approximately 75 still in use across U.S. coastlines today. Unfortunately, the active lighthouse is not accessible to visitors. However, guests are free to enjoy the grounds and scenic views.

When you need a coffee break, pop into Cup of Joy Cafe and grab one of their house lattes. Don’t forget to order a delicious pastry to go with it. My favorite latte, the Angel Rock, is made with white chocolate and raspberry — satisfying the sweet tooth hangries.

There is a lovely little park across the street where you can enjoy your pastry and coffee with a water view.

Boldt Castle in Alexandria Bay, New York

7. Boldt Castle

Alexandria bay.

Boldt Castle is one of the major attractions along the New York State 1000 Islands road trip. The castle, only accessible by boat, is situated on Heart Island. It was built as a summer home for George and Louise Boldt. Sadly, Louise passed before the castle was completed and the magnificent home sat empty and unfinished for over 70 years. Today, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority operates the beautifully appointed castle and accompanying Boldt Yacht House.

As soon as you enter, the foyer and grand staircase set the tone for the home’s elaborate décor and opulent furnishings. The library, billiard room, and ballroom will take your breath away with the beautiful craftsmanship. I find summer homes of bygone days, built to resemble European Castles, intriguing. They represent an affluence few of us will ever achieve.

After your visit to Boldt Castle, stop by Thousand Islands Winery for a tour and a taste of their exceptional New York wines. The beautiful farm, surrounded by lush grape vines, is a perfect backdrop to enjoy a glass of your new favorite wine.

Mileage chart of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail

Great Lakes Seaway Trail

The Great Lakes Seaway Trail offers road trippers four different segments to explore the shores of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and the Niagara River. If you have the time, explore all four sections; most of our trip was on the scenic 1000 Islands/St. Lawrence River section. Three other routes make up the entire trail: Lake Erie/Buffalo/Niagara Falls, Rochester/Central Lake Ontario, and Eastern Lake Ontario.

Boating The Thousand Islands Region

One of the main draws of 1000 Islands is boating. Whether you tow your own, rent, or hire, getting out on the water will enhance your visit.

The Antique Boat Museum offers several boat tour options. An extensive list of boat rentals and boat tours is available on the 1000 Islands website. No matter what town or village you find yourself in, there is most likely a marina, boat launch, or captain available for you to enjoy some time on the water.

1000 Islands Harbor Hotel

In the center of your 1000 Islands road trip is the town of Cayton, the perfect spot to anchor your adventures. The beautiful 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel , perched on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, offers easy access to everything you want to see and do.

We loved the balcony view while enjoying a cup of morning coffee. Every morning, on each floor, the staff sets up a coffee station with freshly brewed coffee and tea options. I appreciated not having to figure out yet another hotel room coffee maker that spits out a marginal morning beverage. Offering brewed coffee on each floor is genius! Grab one of the cozy hotel robes, pad down the hall, pour an exceptional cup of coffee or tea, and enjoy it on your deck with a view of the morning water activities. Every hotel should get on board with this trendsetting idea.

Frink Memorial Park in Clayton, New York

The Best 1000 Islands Road Trip

One of my favorite things about visiting 1000 Islands is the proliferation of benches. Pretty little parks pop up along the route offering beautiful views and spots to sit and take it all in.

Pro Tip: Many of the spots I’ve listed are open seasonally; be sure to check the locations’ websites for opening and closing dates.

There are so many incredible things to do in the Thousand Islands Ontario, and it’s the perfect road trip destination. Whether you’re traveling from Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec, or anywhere within southern Ontario, you’re only a short distance from unprecedented beauty.

There’s really something for everyone in the 1000 Islands. If you love outdoor activities, you’re in the right place. But, there’s also delicious food and drink, fascinating history, and small town charms.

1000 Islands Itinerary

So, why is it called the Thousand Islands? It’s actually an archipelago of 1,864 islands on the St. Lawrence River between Canada and the USA. Some of the islands are Canadian and some are American. The 1000 Islands region consists of the thousands of islands themselves, the surrounding mainland region, and the Thousand Islands National Park in Canada.

To be considered one of the 1,864 islands, the island must have a minimum of one square foot of land above the water level all year long and it must support two living trees or more. The islands are actually the tops of an ancient mountain range that predates the last Ice Age.

I’m going to show you precisely why you need to plan your trip to the 1000 Islands. There’s so much more to this region than the famous Thousand Islands salad dressing that was invented here! There are so many fun things to do in the Thousand Islands that you’ll want to spend at least a weekend here, if not three days or a week long holiday in the area.

Table of Contents

Explore the Charming Town of Gananoque

The Gananoque Town Hall

Gananoque is the Canadian gateway to the 1000 Islands, and it’s the largest community in the region. With that said, it’s still an adorable small town (a population of about 5,000 year long residents) that you’ll want to wander around and explore on foot or bicycle. It’s one of the best small towns in Ontario .

The town’s name is pronounced Gan-an-aw-kway , but it’s simply known as Gan to the locals. It’s right along the St. Lawrence River, so you’ll be able to soak up those beautiful waterfront views from the local parks and restaurant patios. Here are the best things to do in Gananoque, Ontario.

Wander the Gananoque Trail System

Bridge on the Gananoque Trail System

Before you hit the trails of the surrounding conservation areas and the Thousand Islands National Park, the town of Gananoque has its own trail system . There are a few loop trails that follow the Gananoque River, meander through local parks, and even take you through the downtown streets.

Bridge across the Gananoque River

Specifically, there are three easy paths that are part of the Gananoque Trail System: the Lions Trail (4.3km loop), the Rogers Trail (5.9km loop), and the River Trail (5.0km). I suggest starting your journey at Confederation Park in town where you can admire public art sculptures and gently flowing river views. Confederation Park is Canada’s largest outdoor contemporary art collection and it’s a great place to go for a walk.

Have a Pint at Gan Brewing Company

Gan Brewing Company - Scottish Ale

Gan Brewing Company is the best place to drink craft beer in the 1000 Islands, and it’s a must visit for beer lovers. They brew their beer in small batches using the best ingredients, and their outdoor patio is a fantastic place to unwind after a day of outdoor adventures. I sampled their Highland Bull Scottish ale and it’s really flavorful and refreshing on a hot day.

Shop in Downtown Gananoque

Things to do in the Thousand Islands - Explore downtown Gananoque

When you’re visiting Gananoque, be sure to walk down their main street (King St E) to check out the little shops and cafes. There are lots of great restaurants and patios, as well as local businesses to find gifts, clothes, and more. I always enjoy walking around small towns for the cute storefronts, old buildings, and the little details.

Best things to do in Gananoque Ontario

For instance, there are numerous wooden barrels all along King Street East bursting with flowers, and the barrels themselves are painted with unique colorful art. I also discovered some street art on the sides of the buildings, and you can learn about the history of Gananoque through various mosaic murals around town.

Relax or Swim at Joel Stone Park

Gananoque lighthouse at Joel Stone Park

Joel Stone Park is right at the southern edge of Gananoque on the waterfront. There’s a marina filled with boats and delightful waterfront scenery. One of the most iconic sights at Joel Stone Park is the red and white lighthouse at the tip of the park. I suggest sitting under a shady tree for a picnic with picture perfect views.

Marina in Gananoque Ontario - 1000 Islands

You can also go swimming at Joel Stone Park, and there’s a splash pad for the kids to enjoy in the summer. Right next to Joel Stone Beach, you’ll find the 1000 Islands Boat Museum, the 1000 Islands History Museum, and the Gananoque Boat Line where you can take a cruise around the islands themselves. Also, this area is part of the Waterfront Trail that extends right around the Great Lakes. So, you may decide to start a walking or cycling trip from this point.

Go Hiking in the 1000 Islands

best place to visit in 1000 islands

You’ll find some of the best hiking in Ontario here, and hiking is one of the best things to do in the Thousand Islands. Even though the 1000 Islands region isn’t that big, you’ll find numerous hiking trails at the national park and conservation areas for both short and longer treks.

For those who love being in the great outdoors, definitely go hiking in the 1000 Islands at least once or twice while you’re there. One important thing to note: be sure to pack your sunscreen and bug spray , with an emphasis on the bug spray. It was quite buggy when I visited and you’ll want to keep the pests away to enjoy the hikes more.

Thousand Islands National Park: Landon Bay

Thousand Islands National Park of Canada Sign

One of the best places to go hiking in the 1000 Islands is at the Thousand Islands National Park. There are several properties that are part of the national park, including several islands and three spaces on the mainland. Most visitors to the area choose to go hiking at Landon Bay , which offers easy hiking trails that offer a big reward for not too much work.

Stone gate at Landon Bay Centre

Landon Bay is one of the biggest bays in the region, and there are several hiking trails at Landon Bay in the Thousand Islands National Park. I’ve gone hiking at the Donevan Trail and the Lookout Trail. The Donevan Trail is the main path that encircles the park, and the Lookout Trail is a short detour off the Donevan Trail. From the top of the Lookout Trail, you can enjoy spectacular views of Landon Bay and the 1000 Islands, Ontario.

The Lookout at Landon Bay - 1000 Islands National Park

When you visit Landon Bay, be sure to hop over to Halsteads Bay right across the road from the main Thousand Islands National Park entrance. There’s a big parking lot and you can walk right down to the water from there. It’s a very beautiful and serene place to visit before or after your hike.

Thousand Islands National Park: Jones Creek

Things to do in the Thousand Islands - Hiking at Jones Creek Trails, Thousand Islands National Park

The Jones Creek Trails at the Thousand Islands National Park are another fabulous place for hiking adventures. A trek down the Jones Creek Trails showcases old growth forest, wetland habitats, and stunning views of the surrounding waters. The trails themselves are pretty flat so they’re not terribly difficult to navigate. Plus, you’ll see some beautiful views along the way.

Things to do in the Thousand Islands - Hiking at Jones Creek Trails, Thousand Islands National Park

I hiked the entire lower section of the Jones Creek Trails: the Bear Loop (0.9km, 20 minutes), the Heron Loop (1km, 25 minutes), the Turtle Loop (0.6km, 20 minutes), and the Eel Loop (0.7km, 20 minutes).

You can hike all of them in under a couple of hours for sure. For both the Landon Bay trails and the Jones Creek trails, you can choose to go for a shorter hike and experience the park if you have a limited amount of time.

Things to do in the Thousand Islands - Hiking at Jones Creek Trails, Thousand Islands National Park

Here are trail maps of the Thousand Islands National Park, although there are enough signs along the Jones Creek Trails that you won’t need one. The hiking trails themselves are very well marked with the appropriate colors of the trails, depending which one you’re on.

The Heron Loop is definitely a highlight with the most scenic views of the wetlands. The Bear Loop is also quite beautiful as you walk between the tall trees. While all of the trails are worth hiking, you need to check out the Heron Loop and the Bear Loop for sure.

Marble Rock Conservation Area

Marble Rock Conservation Area

Marble Rock Conservation Area is a hidden gem of the 1000 Islands region, as not too many people venture over to hike at this conservation area. The Thousand Islands National Park is the main draw, so this conservation area is often overlooked. If you love hiking and you’re looking for a little bit of a challenge, I suggest venturing out on these hiking trails.

Marble Rock Conservation Area

They’re more challenging than the average trail due to the amount of rocks and boulders that you’ll encounter on the way. You’ll need to watch your step as you traverse across this rocky landscape. There are some hills as well, but the rocks are the main obstacle here. Otherwise, it’s a lengthy journey with several lookout points along the way. About halfway through the hike, you’ll encounter one of the most beautiful viewpoints overlooking a small lake.

Marble Rock Conservation Area

The South Loop Trail is 7.2km and I spent about three hours hiking here. There’s also a North Loop where you can add on some extra kilometres if you choose. I hiked on a really hot day, and I found that the South Loop Trail was the perfect amount of hiking. I felt quite exhausted towards the end of this one, but it was a great challenge and I’m happy to have accomplished hiking this one on my own.

Thousand Islands Kayaking Tour

1000 Islands Kayaking Tour - Best things to do in the Thousand Islands

When I visited the Thousand Islands on a trip a couple of years ago, I had the pleasure of going on a 1000 Islands kayaking tour with Justin. The two of us spent the day out on the water with 1000 Islands Kayaking. This is the best way to get up close to many of the 1000 Islands on the Canadian side. In many cases, these islands are only accessible by small boat, and you can paddle right up to them in your kayak.

1000 Islands Kayaking Tour - Best things to do in the Thousand Islands

We saw many incredible sights, including tiny cottages on tiny islands (that often take up the whole island!), the remnants of a sunken shipwreck, and tall, rocky cliffs. It’s also a great way to catch glimpses of local wildlife. This is one of the most biodiverse areas in the whole country. In fact, there are 250 species of birds that live in the 1000 Islands. We saw many species of birds, like geese, ducks, eagles, heron, and even an osprey.

We kayaked to Half Moon Bay, a small cove at the southeastern portion of Bostwick Island. Unlike some of the other islands, these cliffs are flat, smoothed by the rushing water during the glacial melt. This cove is a natural amphitheater, and also known as the tallest cathedral. Church services of a variety of denominations are held here on a regular basis. Since the 1800s, people have paddled their small boats into Half Moon Bay to worship together.

1000 Islands Kayaking Tour - Best things to do in the Thousand Islands

It was also a great opportunity to get out and stretch our legs on one of the islands. Justin and I enjoyed a delightful packed lunch at Beau Rivage island, and we also went for a short walk there. We made one more stop on McDonald Island to take a look at the glamping accommodations, as well as the small beach there. All in all, the two of us enjoyed a fantastic 1000 Islands tour by kayak, and it’s one of our most memorable kayaking trips yet.

Thousand Islands Boat Tour

1000 Islands Boat Tour - Boat cruise with Rockport Cruises

One of the most popular things to do in the Thousand Islands is taking a boat cruise of the area. It’s perfect for families and people of all ages to enjoy the surroundings from the comfort of a small cruise boat. I thoroughly enjoyed my 1000 Islands boat cruise with Rockport Cruises .

We cruised through the waters of the St. Lawrence River, admiring every new landscape and view that came our way. The boat itself has multiple decks and an indoor area with seating if you feel like taking a break. I stood on one of the outer decks for the entire two hour cruise because I couldn’t get enough of the scenery.

1000 Islands Boat Tour - Boat cruise with Rockport Cruises

You can see so many tiny islands on the journey, and many of them have small cottages on them. It’s very scenic as you drift through the Canadian waters, beneath the 1000 Islands Bridge and towards the US waters.

While we were technically in the USA, you don’t need to bring a passport with you if you aren’t getting off the boat. The entire cruise features a narrated recording over the loud speaker, so you can learn some interesting facts about the history and nature of the area.

Boldt Castle and the 1000 Islands boat tour

One of the highlights of the Rockport Cruises boat tour of the 1000 Islands is spotting Boldt Castle on Heart Island. The story surrounding Boldt Castle is very romantic and also very sad. George C. Boldt set out to build a lavish castle as a symbol of love towards his wife, Louise.

In the middle of its construction, his wife suddenly passed away. Boldt halted all construction and never returned to the castle. For many years, this partially built castle was left in ruins. However, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property and has restored and preserved the castle for all to enjoy.

1000 Islands Helicopter Tour

1000 Islands helicopter tour - Best things to do in the Thousand Islands

One of those bucket list adventures that you simply must take at least once in your lifetime is a helicopter tour. There’s really no better place to take a helicopter tour than the picturesque Thousand Islands! A helicopter tour is one of the best things to do in the Thousand Islands, and you’ll surely remember this journey for the rest of your life.

1000 Islands helicopter tour - Best things to do in the Thousand Islands

I embarked on a helicopter tour with 1000 Islands Helicopter Tours and it was a smooth flight from start to finish. It was the perfect morning for a helicopter tour with clear, sunny skies. You could see far off into the distance to faraway wind farms and even the city of Kingston .

1000 Islands helicopter tour - Best things to do in the Thousand Islands

The best part of the helicopter tour was seeing the 1000 Islands from above. I didn’t realize that the waters were so many shades of blue, ranging from turquoise to deep blue. There are so many little parcels of land stretching out to the horizon, and some had tiny cottages on them. It was also wonderful to spot the collections of sailboats surrounding the islands.

1000 Islands helicopter tour - Best things to do in the Thousand Islands

You can tour the 1000 Islands by helicopter all year long, although I imagine that the summer and fall tours are likely the prettiest. I’d be curious to see what this landscape looks like in the winter, too! There are multiple tours, excusions, and packages, so you’ll have to take a look at their website to decide which is best for you.

1000 Islands Tower

1000 Islands Tower - Attractions of the Thousand Islands

The  1000 Islands Tower  features some of the most spectacular views of the region. Take the elevator all the way to the top of the first observation deck and enjoy the 360 degree panoramic views. You can enjoy breathtaking scenery from three observation decks.

1000 Islands Tower - Attractions of the Thousand Islands

It was really neat to see the 1000 Islands Tower from the boat cruise, and then you can plan to go to the top of the tower for the views of the river where the boats operate. I highly recommend traveling to the 1000 Islands and viewing this unique scenery from as many perspectives as possible to make the most of your stay.

1000 Islands Restaurants: Where to Eat & Drink

Looking for restaurants in the 1000 Islands? Once you’ve experienced many Thousand Islands attractions and activities, I’m sure you’ve worked up an appetite. Thankfully, there are many fabulous eateries and patios with delicious food and drink all over the region. Here are a few of my favorites that you should check out when you’re there.

The Purple House

The Purple House Gananoque - Restaurants in the 1000 Islands

The Purple House is a family run establishment in the heart of Gananoque. You’ll immediately know that you’re in the right place when you spot the purple house near the waterfront. They’re best known for their wood fired pizzas, salads, and more. While they work with local farmers to use the freshest ingredients in their meals, they also grow some of their own vegetables on site.

The Purple House Gananoque - Restaurants in the 1000 Islands

I sampled their vegetarian pizza (minus the cheese) and the Purple House salad (minus the goat cheese). The pizza was topped with lots of fresh veggies, although I’d love to see them offer a vegan cheese in the future for their plant-based customers. The Purple House salad has mixed greens, berries, candied walnuts, and a house maple balsamic vinaigrette that’s super tasty.

Muskie Jake’s Tap & Grill

Muskie Jake's Gananoque

Muskie Jake’s Tap & Grill is part of the Gananoque Inn & Spa, although you can certainly dine there if you’re not staying at the hotel. They’ve got an amazing patio at the back of the restaurant overlooking the river. Their vegan offering is the veggie burger, a Beyond patty served with all of the classic burger toppings.

Muskie Jake's Gananoque - Vegan burger

Muskie Jake’s is quite vegan and vegetarian friendly. They also have a veggie wrap and a summer pasta that are naturally vegetarian and could probably be made vegan upon request. The burger is quite delicious, so I do recommend ordering that with a side of fries.

Donnelly’s on the River

Donnelly's on the River in Ivy Lea, 1000 Islands

Donnelly’s on the River is moments outside of Gananoque in the village of Ivy Lea. As you can expect, it’s right on the river with beautiful scenery from the patio while you dine. You’ll find lots of pub fare, pasta, pizza and more, along with an impressive offering of vegan menu items. All of the gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options are marked clearly on the menu.

Donnelly's on the River in Ivy Lea, 1000 Islands

There’s a vegetable and bean soup, vegetable spring rolls, a vegan Beyond Meat burger, a vegetable stir fry, veggie pizza (where you can add vegan cheese), a vegan wrap, and the river nachos. I was looking for a lighter snack when I visited, so I ordered a platter of the vegan nachos that hit the spot.

Laverne’s

Laverne's restaurant in Gananoque

While I only stopped for coffee at Laverne’s one morning, they’ve got a fantastic dining menu, too. I’d love to return for lunch one day as they have a great selection of vegan dishes. For instance, they offer vegan tacos, burritos, fajitas on “Fiesta Fridays”, and there are delicious noodle salads, tofu salads, vegan burgers and sandwiches throughout the rest of the week.

Laverne's restaurant in Gananoque

If you only have time to stop for coffee or you’re looking for some caffeine first thing in the morning, pop over to Laverne’s. I was greeted by really friendly employees and enjoyed the welcoming environment.

Panache Bakery & Cafe

Panache Bakery & Cafe Gananoque

Looking for a sweet treat and a coffee first in the morning? I can never get enough coffee, so I was thrilled to try two different spots in downtown Gananoque: Laverne’s and Panache Bakery & Cafe . They’ve got freshly baked bread, pastries and treats, and yummy coffee.

Panache Bakery & Cafe Gananoque

I asked if there were any vegan treats and to my delight, there was one! Grab one of their date squares if you’re seeking a treat without any animal products. They’re really delicious and I enjoyed mine first thing in the morning with a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

BUSL Cider in the 1000 Islands - Things to do in the Thousand Islands

BUSL Cider is one of the top places to visit in the 1000 Islands if you love craft beverages and delicious cider in all kinds of flavors. They’re about 5km from Mallorytown and situated on a beautiful property overlooking fields and orchards. BUSL Cider has a fantastic outdoor patio where you can truly unwind with a refreshing drink in your hand.

BUSL Cider in the 1000 Islands - Things to do in the Thousand Islands

Their premium ciders use apples fresh from their own apple orchards, and they also grow a variety of other crops for unique blends. You can feel good about supporting this family owned business, and their delicious ciders stand out from the pack.

Where to Stay in Gananoque

Colonial Resort & Spa in Gananoque Ontario Canada

I stayed at the Colonial Resort & Spa when I traveled to the Thousand Islands, and it was the perfect place to stay. Even though I was out and about for most of the day, it’s always nice to have a cozy and comfortable place to call home. The location is ideal for a trip to the 1000 Islands. You’re within walking distance of downtown Gananoque and the whole Thousand Islands region is only a short drive away.

Colonial Resort & Spa in Gananoque Ontario Canada

The Colonial Resort & Spa offers complimentary Wi-Fi, a mini fridge, a flatscreen TV with cable channels, and both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool. There’s free parking right outside of your room. It’s such a great getaway for families. I saw many families with small children at the swimming pool, and it reminded me of those amazing family vacations that I took when I was a kid. For those who seek moments of self-care, indulge in one of their spa treatments for rejuvenation and serenity.

Colonial Resort & Spa in Gananoque Ontario Canada

I thoroughly enjoyed my two nights at the Colonial Resort & Spa and highly recommend that you stay there. It’s the perfect home base for exploring and experiencing all of the best things to do in the Thousand Islands. Book your stay at the Colonial Resort & Spa, or feel free to check out more reviews written by fellow travelers who have stayed there.

9 best things to do in the Thousand Islands this summer

  • Updated: Apr. 28, 2015, 4:31 p.m. |
  • Published: Apr. 28, 2015, 3:31 p.m.

The Thousand Islands region  truly offers one of the most breathtaking and surreal settings in New York, with islands dotting the lake and the river ranging in size from a few square feet to Canada's Wolfe Island, with its 48 square miles. Some islands remain wild and uninhabited, while others are adorned with Victorian homes and even castles. Along the shores, nestled into nooks and near deep harbors, visitors find quiet villages, like Sackets Harbor  and Clayton, as well as lively towns, like Alexandria Bay , all regularly celebrating their enchanted surroundings. Here's just a few of things worth doing this summer in the Thousand Islands. 1. Get Out On The Water

It all starts with the water in the Thousands Islands, with countless bays and passages, as well as an international shipping channel. To fully grasp the beauty of the place, it's best to get on a boat. Luckily, there's lots of ways to do that including the many boat tour companies, water taxis and personalized cruises. Check out Uncle Sam's Boat Tours  and Clayton Island Tours  for group excursions, or 1000 Island Water Taxi  and Classic Island Cruises  for more intimate affairs.

Boat tours in the Thousand Islands 2. Visit Boldt Castle

Once on the water, it's hard not to be drawn to the beauty and mystique of Boldt Castle  on Heart Island. It's harder still to forget the romantically tragic story behind it. Hotel magnate George C. Boldt began construction in 1900, meant for his beloved wife Louise. She died suddenly before it was finished, leaving Boldt heartbroken. Construction halted and he never returned. Now owned by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority, and recently restored, the public can visit the castle via boat tours, water taxis or private watercraft. To be sure, Boldt isn't the only castle in the region. Also check out Singer Castle  on Dark Island.

5 awe-inspiring castles in Upstate NY 3. The Antique Boat Museum

To truly get a sense of the region's love affair with the water, and to check out some cool wooden boats, make sure to visit the Antique Boat Museum  in Clayton. The museum's galleries include over 300 expertly-maintained and restored boats over 4 acres, with special collections focused on wooden speed boats, canoes and the St. Lawrence Skiff. The museum also hosts the 51st annual Antique Boat Show  in the summer. 4. Pirate Days in Alex Bay

One annual event captures both the island vibe and the irreverent local attitude, and makes for a fun visit for families and others looking for adventure: Bill Johnston's Pirate Days . Held this year August 7-16, the celebration turns the streets and docks of Alexandria Bay into a living tribute to the renegade lifestyle. Performances, parades and even a pirate ship invasion take place during this annual celebration named after infamous local patriot, fugitive and folk-hero buccaneer Bill Johnston.

5. Wellesley Island State Park

Just across the Thousand Island Bridge awaits one of the largest of the islands, home to small Victorian communities, summer homes and Wellesley Island State Park  -- the largest state park around. Visitors can swim, camp, fish or golf. Or they can just hike along the miles of trails and stop in at the Minna Anthony Common Nature Center  to learn more about the region's natural history. The park even offers two and three bedroom cottages for rent. 6. Tour the Thousand Islands Wineries

Another way to get to know the region is by visiting the burgeoning collection of family-owned wineries. First launched in 2007, the Thousand Islands-Seaway Wine Trail  connects wineries in Cape Vincent, Clayton, Alexandria Bay and beyond, making it easy for travelers to sample award-winning wines and get to know the region.

best place to visit in 1000 islands

Thousand Islands-Seaway Wine Trail guide

A growing number of wineries and vineyards are giving visitors more reasons to spend time in the St. Lawrence River Valley.

7. Frederic Remington Art Museum

If American Art interests you, it's hard to ignore that just 40 minutes northeast of Alexandria Bay, in Ogdensburg, you can find the Frederic Remington Art Museum . Known for his bronze sculptures depicting Wild West images - one of which sits in the Oval Office - Remington also had a passion for painting and a love for the Thousand Islands. Many examples of his bronze work and other art can be found at the museum.

8. Charter a Fishing Boat

If there's another major activity that makes the region famous it's the fishing. The lake side is known to hold salmon, trout, walleye and lots of bass. Up the river, more bass, northern pike and muskellunge rule. There's no shortage of ways to wet your lines, from park access points to public fishing places. But the best way to do it is with one of the many experienced fishing charters  that call the waters home. Bring a New York State fishing license, and you could catch a trophy-sized fish. 9. Get under the water

A truly unique way to see the Thousand Islands is not on top of the water, but under it. Several local dive shops offer the opportunity for all levels of diver to see what lies below the surface of these amazing islands. With all the shoals and ships that have struggled to navigate them over the centuries, there's a lot to be seen. Launch a underwater excursion with one of these local shops: Blue Foot Diving , Hunts Dive Shop , Thousand Island Dive Excursions , and All About Scuba .

Things to Do in the 1000 Islands with Kids

The 1000 Islands are an incredibly picturesque part of Ontario, perfect for a family-friendly summer getaway. Between hiking trails, street art, scenic waterways, and a quaint town, some of the best things to do in the 1000 Islands with kids involve time spent outside.

1000 Islands Boat Cruise

🛥️ Looking for the best way to see the Thousand Islands? The 5-Hour 1000 Islands Boldt Castle Stopover Cruise from Gananoque is family-friendly and was our favourite way to see and learn about the area.

A Little About the 1000 Islands

Gananoque is located approximately 3 hours North West of Toronto, and is considered the “Canadian Gateway to the Thousand Islands.” Pronounced gan-an-aw-kway , this picturesque town is the perfect home base for a 1000 Islands adventure.

The 1000 Islands are actually a North American archipelago consisting of 1864 islands. The Thousand Islands straddle the Canadian/U.S. border, with Ontario to the north and the state of New York to the south.

1000-Islands-Gananoque-Sign

Whether you are travelling from Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec, or anywhere within southern Ontario, you’re only a short distance from some of the most beautiful vistas in the province.

Many of the Islands belong to single owners, while others belong to the government, or are completely uninhabited. One small Island owner, in fact, actually has their property split between both Canada and the US!

Fun Fact: To be considered one of the 1000 Islands, the island must have a minimum of one square foot of land above the water level all year long, and it must support two or more living trees.

The 10 Best Things to Do in the 1000 Islands with Kids

As we mentioned, many of the best things to do in the 1000 Islands with kids involve outdoor activities. Take advantage of this opportunity for the family to unplug, get some fresh air, and just enjoy all that nature has to offer.

1. Explore the Quaint Little Town of Gananoque

With a population of only 5,000 permanent residents, Gananoque, or “Gan” to the locals, is a quaint little town filled with charm. Be sure to spend some time exploring King Street E, which is the main downtown street.

King Street E is bustling with awesome restaurants and patios, charming boutiques and shops, and local businesses filled with clothing, gifts and other trinkets. Keep in mind that parking along the main street in the downtown area is paid.

Be sure to explore the many parks and green spaces in town as well. Not only will you find the old railroad path that will lead you to Confederation Park, but quite a few murals and sculptures throughout town.

2. Go for a Swim in Joel Stone Park

If you are looking for a place to cool down on a hot summer day, head to Joel Stone Park for a swim.

The park is located on the southern edge of the Gananoque waterfront and even has a pretty great splash pad for the kids.

Located on Water Street, Joel Stone Park is where you will also find the marina filled with boats, as well as Gananoque’s iconic red and white lighthouse.

Just adjacent to the beach area is where you will find the 1000 Islands Boat Museum, the 1000 Islands History Museum, and the Gananoque Boat Line where you can take a cruise around the islands.

1000-Islands-Gananoque-shoreline

Stay for a picnic, watch the seaplanes take off on the water, or stroll along the Waterfront Trail. No matter what you choose, spending the day at Joel Stone Park is definitely one of the best things to do in the 1000 Islands with kids.

3. Go for a Hike in Thousand Islands National Park

One of the best things to do in the 1000 Islands with kids, is to go for a hike in the Thousand Islands National Park.

With several properties that make up part of the national park, including several islands and three spaces on the mainland, there a numerous trails available to suit all types of hikers.

Landon Bay is one of the biggest bays in the region and is the most popular area for hiking in Thousand Islands National Park.

Most visitors prefer this area because it offers easy hiking trails with a big reward for very little work.

With seven trails to choose from, the one you really can’t miss is the Lookout Trail.

Only 0.5 km from the parking lot, the Lookout Trail allows you to enjoy spectacular views of Landon Bay and the 1000 Islands. And given that this portion of the hike can be done in under half an hour, it is totally worth it!

In order to access the Lookout Trail, you will need to first start on the Donevan Trail. The Donevan Trail is a 4.3 km loop that encircles the park, with the Lookout Trail detouring off this longer trail.

We found the trail pretty easy to maneuver. However, there are a couple of staircases on this hike, which may be a bit difficult for some people.

It would take you approximately 1.5 hours to complete the moderately-rated Donevan Trail.

Jones Creek

The Jones Creek Trails are another awesome place for hiking adventures in Thousand Islands National Park. The trails, for the most part, are pretty short and relatively flat, but still have incredible views along the way.

There are 6 trails to explore at Jones Creek, most showcasing old-growth forests, wetland habitats, and gorgeous views of the surrounding waters. The trails are between 0.6 km and 3.9 km in length, with the longest Hawk Trail taking approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete.

And if you enjoy finding the Parks Canada Red Chairs, head out on the Heron Loop. This easy 1.0 km loop will take you about 20 minutes, and will provide you with some fantastic views while you sit down and relax.

1000-Islands-hike-with-family

All the trails at Jones Creek are rated from easy to moderate, which definitely makes this a very family-friendly activity option while visiting the 1000 Islands. Be sure to pack insect repellent and check for ticks after hiking in the park.

One last thing to keep in mind when heading to Thousand Islands National Park is that you will need to purchase a Parks Pass for admission.

Passes can either be purchased at the gates, or they can be purchased in advance online. For more information, visit the  Parks Canada website . The pass will need to be left on your dashboard while in the parks.

We purchase a yearly Discovery Pass which allows us to enter all National Parks and National Historic Sites.

4. Take a 1000 Islands Cruise

Taking a City Cruise is definitely one of the most iconic and best things to do in the 1000 Islands with kids.

City Cruises are fully accessible and offer a variety of daytime sightseeing excursions, as well as a special sunset cruise.

In business since 1951, the company operates several trip-decker vessels, which are perfect for a 1000 Islands excursion.

Cruises are between 1 and 5 hours long, and run several times a day, depending on the option.

1000-Islands-City-Cruises

Sit back and enjoy the ride as you sail along the St. Lawrence River, past incredible million-dollar mansions and beach homes, natural landmarks and even a gorgeous castle!

As you cruise along, the automated recording tells you all about the history of the islands, as well as the tales of the shipwrecks that lie beneath the water.

1000-Islands-LOVE-mansion

A cruise is a delightful and relaxing way to spend the day sightseeing. Prices start at $27.50 for adults, children aged 6-12 are $21.50, and kids under 5 were $13.50.

Parking, for a small fee, was located across the street from where the boats docked.

And don’t forget to pack a hat and some sunscreen , as it is really easy to burn while out on your cruise!

5. Visit a Castle While on Your 1000 Islands Cruise

If you decide to do the 5-hour excursion with City Cruises , you will not only be able to enjoy the gorgeous views along St. Lawrence but you will also be treated to a stopover at an incredible castle!

Visiting Heart Island and Boldt Castle should definitely be on your list of the best things to do in the 1000 Islands.

But make sure you have your passports! The castle lies on American soil, which means a quick trip through customs upon disembarkation of the boat (as well as on arrival back in Gananoque).

1000-Islands-Boldt-castle-from-the-water

Construction of Boldt Castle began in 1900 by George C. Boldt, proprietor of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, as a tribute to his wife Louise.

Boldt spared no expense in the construction of the castle, with many opulent details visible throughout.

However, when Louise passed away suddenly in 1904, all construction on the castle was halted, with Boldt never returning to the island again. As a result, many rooms in the castle remain unfinished.

Exploring the Castle

The rooms that were completed, however, were absolutely gorgeous. We especially loved the incredible kitchen!

Surrounded by all the opulence, you could almost imagine that you were in a castle somewhere in Europe.

1000-Islands-Boldt-Castle-kitchen

Once you are done viewing the inside of the castle, you definitely don’t want to miss walking the grounds!

The views from various parts of the island are spectacular, allowing for some pretty great photography opportunities.

The cruise allows for 2 hours on the island, which is plenty of time for a self-guided tour of the castle and grounds, as well as a visit to the gift shop and a quick snack at the concession stand.

1000-Islands-Boldt-Castle-garden-bridge

We really enjoyed our allotted time on the island. We did not feel rushed, and it gave the kids a chance to stretch their legs, run around, and release some energy!

6. Go for a Bike Ride

A really great and inexpensive way to explore the 1000 Islands with kids, is by bike. And the 1000 Islands Waterfront Trail is the perfect place for a ride!

This 37 km paved multi-use pathway runs along the St. Lawrence River, offering cyclists spectacular water views along the way.

The pathway is about 10 feet wide, newly paved, low-traffic, and is completely separate from the busy roadway, making it perfect for families with younger children.

1000-Islands-Bike-ride

The 1000 Islands Waterfront Trail has plenty of access points, including Landon Bay Centre, where you will find free parking and other amenities.

7. Paddle Around the 1000 Islands on a Kayaking Adventure

One of the best things to do in the 1000 Islands with kids, is to go on a kayaking adventure.

1000 Islands Kayaking provides guided kayaking tours that are both beginner and family-friendly.

1000-Islands-family-kayaking-pic

You can choose from either full or half-day tours, overnight kayak/camping adventures, or self-guided kayak rentals.

1000 Islands Kayaking provides you with all the gear necessary, including dry bags, lunch, snacks, water, and safety equipment.

Our family opted for a full-day adventure in tandem kayaks. Hubby and I each took one of the kids with us, so it worked out really well.

The day begins with a brief in-water lesson for the group. As the packages are not private, you will be paddling with other participants.

1000-Islands-kayaking-and-bird-in-flight

The tour begins with a paddle through the Admiralty Group of islands. Our guide was quite knowledgeable about the history of the area, telling us interesting facts about the various islands and their inhabitants.

Lunch was served on a small island and included a lot of fresh veggies, fruit, salad, fresh sandwiches and drinks.

Participants are also given some time during the lunch break to go for a swim before heading out for the second half of the tour.

1000-Islands-kayak-trip-lunch

Throughout the day, we paddled past some beautiful homes and yachts, explored some gorgeous coves, and sailed through some spectacular waterways.

Our guide made sure to stop for photo ops, as well as to make sure that the slower members of the group were never far behind.

We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone. But you do need to have some level of fitness and stamina to take part in the full-day tour, especially if you have kids in tow.

1000-Islands-kayak-with-kid

The cost for the full-day tour was $145 per adult and $95 per youth. Parking was free and located adjacent to the water. Kids over the age of 6 are allowed to participate.

Half-day tours are 3 hours in length and cost $145 per adult and $75 per youth.

8. Climb the 1000 Islands Tower

The 1000 Islands Tower is another one of the best things to do in the 1000 Islands with kids.

This one-of-a-kind attraction takes you up 130 meters (400 feet), allowing you to enjoy panoramic views of the St. Lawrence River and 1000 Islands.

The elevator takes about 40 seconds to reach the first of three observation areas on the 1000 Islands Tower.

From there, you can enjoy the gorgeous landscape from Kingston to Brockville. Tour guides are also available on the observation decks to provide you with local knowledge and answer all your questions.

Each 30-minute visit includes an elevator trip to the top of the tower and 3 open observation decks for you to explore.

Where to Stay While in the 1000 Islands

Our favourite place to stay while visiting the Thousand Islands is The Gananoque Inn and Spa . Located right in the heart of town, this waterfront property is the perfect home base for our family.

The hotel was clean, the rooms comfortable, and the staff friendly. Our stay included a hot breakfast, which was more than enough for us.

The hotel is within walking distance of the downtown area, it is only a short drive to the National Park.

Your stay also includes an assigned parking spot, which in our case was conveniently located right outside our room!

Where to Eat in Gananoque

There are many amazing restaurants in downtown Gananoque. From take-out places to casual dining, cafes, and upscale restaurants, you can find it all.

Greko’s Pizzeria was a nice little family-friendly eat-in pizza place. There was more than enough selection and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable.

For something a little more upscale, try Riva Restaurant . Riva is set in a gorgeous renovated historic building and can set the stage for any special occasion.

Riva has a fine dining room, fireplace, and bar area, as well as 2 outdoor patio areas. The food, which is made from locally-sourced ingredients, is absolutely delicious!

How Do You Get to the 1000 Islands?

If you are coming from a distance, the closest international airport on the Canadian side would be Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport. It would then be about an hour and a half drive to Gananoque.

If you happen to be coming from anywhere in Southern Ontario, you would just need to hop on Highway 401 E and head straight to Gananoque.

If you are travelling from the US, the closest airport is Watertown International Airport, in the state of New York. It would then be about an hour’s drive to Gananoque, with a border crossing at the Thousand Islands Bridge.

How to Get Around 1000 Islands

The town of Gananoque is definitely walkable. Most of the main attractions are within walking distance of one another, as are many of the popular hotels and restaurants.

You will need a car if you are looking to head to the 1000 Islands National Park, or to some of the shops, restaurants and hotels located on the outskirts of town.

Gananoque also has an extensive trail network, with many of the trails passing right through town. This makes many of the attractions as well as the waterfront area, also accessible by bicycle.

Need a ride to one of the islands? Just hop on one of the many available water taxis! You can find more information on water taxis  here .

Where to go in 2024, according to Travel + Leisure editors — for cultural immersion and major travel bragging rights.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

Well, you knew it was coming. This year, more than 20 Travel + Leisure staffers weighed in to create this hand-picked list of the places that thoughtful, curious travelers should consider in 2024.

These are the destinations that have captured our imaginations, the spots where T+L editors want to spend their own time in the year ahead. Among the picks are Canada's Métis Crossing, which headlined our October 2023 issue ; Istanbul, for which our editor in chief makes a compelling case ; and Paris, because there's a little thing called Les Jeux Olympiques coming up.

Other, lesser-known places are on the rise. Consider the small towns of Sonoma County, where new businesses are doing big things ; a remote corner of Australia, where expedition ships are the way in; a Himalayan hideaway where visitors are left breathless and not just because of the altitude.

We hope this list inspires you to see the world in a new way in the coming year. We'll see you out there.

For cultural immersion, ålborg, denmark.

Alexander Farnsworth/Getty Images

It rates as Denmark’s fourth-largest city, with around 120,000 residents, but out-of-the-way Ålborg might seem an unlikely international-travel hub. That's not stopping Scandinavian Airlines, which is betting on the compact, alluring city with newly launched flights from Newark Liberty International, which will run three times a week from April through October. The cobbled streets of Ålborg’s old town are lined with half-timbered houses and pastel exteriors; the attractively refurbished waterfront — where you’ll find the newly renovated Pier 5 Hotel — is another walkable district. The city’s rich cultural scene includes a modern art museum , an architecture center, and, a short drive away, Regan Vest , a Cold War museum that opened in a former bunker in February 2023. Indeed, Ålborg is a gateway to the wider region of North Jutland, with its dramatic coastline around the town of Skagen, long a draw to Danish artists; windswept dunes of Thy National Park ; and 2,000-year-old Viking ring fortresses which have, at long last, been collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site . — Peter Terzian

Cartagena, Colombia

Sofia Jaramillo

A perennially hot destination, Colombia is coming into its own as a luxury escape these days, thanks to a ton of excitement in and around Cartagena, on the country’s Caribbean coast. In 2023, the city welcomed Casa Pestagua , a 16-room boutique hotel within a restored 17th-century building, in the historic center. Now, the same owners are working to open bungalows on Isla Barú, a popular day-trip spot, before the end of 2023. Sustainability minded travelers can find their fit at Blue Apple Beach , an eco-hotel on Tierra Bomba Island, just off the coast, that’s B Corp certified and generates half its power from solar, as T+L recently reported . In 2024, Disney's “Encanto”-themed tour of Colombia will debut, shining more light on Cartagena, one of the many stops on the itinerary. And there’s even more growth in the pipeline: Delta Air Lines is adding new nonstop flights to Cartagena from Atlanta in December 2023, a Four Seasons hotel is on the horizon, and the nation is investing in an airport expansion that will serve an ever-increasing number of visitors. — Susmita Baral

Eastern & Oriental Express, a Belmond Train

Courtesy of Belmond

After a four-year pause, this luxury train that crisscrosses Southeast Asia will ride again in February. Several new itineraries will be available on the revamped Express, which has 15 cherry wood–clad cabins and vibrant Malay-inspired decor. The Essence of Malaysia journey, for example, takes travelers from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, with side trips to Langkawi, for snorkeling in Pulau Payar Marine Park, and Penang, among the greatest food cities on the planet. Alternatively, a Wild Malaysia option includes a stop at Taman Negara National Park, where visitors might spot a Sumatran rhino or tiger. “These ‘slow travel’ journeys give our guests the opportunity to rest their mind, rekindle, and reconnect,” said Dan Ruff, the CEO of Belmond. Much like a storied ocean liner, the majestic Eastern & Oriental Express is a destination unto itself, with a sultry piano bar car; an open-air lounge with wicker furniture where passengers can watch the Malaysian jungle rush by; and two restaurant carriages serving Peranakan food. You may not have had "eating laksa on a luxury train" on your 2024 bingo card, but you really should. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

For one month between June and July, soccer — or should we say fußball — will take over Germany, as the nation hosts the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship. Held every four years, the tournament for men’s national teams will take place in 10 cities across Germany, including Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich. “This will be an incredible, not-to-be-missed moment,” said Sofia Markovich , a travel advisor on T+L's A-List who specializes in Austria and Germany. “I expect interest to go through the roof as this is a major sports event — second only to the World Cup.” Even casual fans should find the atmosphere thrilling, Markovich said, particularly those who happen to pass through game-day destinations while cruising the country’s rivers . One host city deserves a particular spotlight thanks to the new Rosewood Munich , which opened in October. Set across two buildings (one, formerly the headquarters of the State Bank of Bavaria, the other, a Baroque residence), the 132-key property is steps from the charms of Old Town, including the leafy Maximiliansplatz, and walkable to one of Europe’s most surprising surf spots: the rapids of the Isar River . — Liz Cantrell

Métis Crossing, Alberta

Amber Bracken

“This is not a place where you look at old things behind glass,” said Juanita Marois, the CEO of Métis Crossing, one of Canada’s most compelling Indigenous tourism projects. “This is an immersive destination where you experience the culture and the warmth of the Métis people through our land, water, skies, buildings, food, and programs.” The 688-acre retreat, which writer Carleigh Baker detailed in T+L’s October 2023 issue , is today home to a 40-room lodge, a cultural center, and campgrounds. Depending on the season, visitors can learn about traditional crafts, enjoy festivals held on-site, or head out for bird-watching, canoeing, or snowshoeing. A new addition to Métis Crossing is a collection of eight Sky Watching Domes , luxe stand-alone suites with panoramic skylight windows. From the Domes, Marois explained, “guests can listen to Indigenous stories of the night skies, see the stars, and view the aurora borealis." — Jalyn Robinson

Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, Georgia

Getty Images

It’s not every day the U.S. gets a new national park, but 2024 could see this central Georgia destination enter the fold. Presently managed as a national historical park, Ocmulgee is home to large earthen mounds, including temple complexes, created by numerous Native American peoples over thousands of years. Should Congress approve the new designation in 2024, Ocmulgee will become the first national park in the state and the first in the U.S. to be co-managed by a nation whose ancestors were removed from the area: the Muscogee (Creek) were forcibly relocated from central Georgia as a result of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. “We now have an opportunity to come back and not feel like we are visiting, but to feel like we are coming home,” said Tracie Revis, a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and the director of advocacy for the Ocmulgee National Park & Preserve Initiative, a community group. The gateway to the park is the city of Macon, where the Muscogee (Creek) Nation flag flies alongside the Stars and Stripes, and the street signs are being replaced with ones written in both Muscogee and English. A particularly opportune time to visit will be in September, for the town’s annual Indigenous film festival . — Liz Cantrell

Rajasthan, India

Aparna Jayakumar

India’s northwestern state of Rajasthan, with its wealth of iconic hotels and cultural attractions, is one of the best-known among U.S. travelers. It also promises new delights in the coming year, with several new addresses in Jaipur worth planning a trip around. There's Villa Palladio , a delightful nine-room hotel on the outskirts of town created by the Swiss-Dutch team behind Bar Palladio , an Instagram favorite in the city center. The Johri is a beautifully designed five-room property with a chic cocktail bar and organic vegetarian restaurant on the ground level, tucked away in a heritage townhouse in Jaipur's Old Town. Meanwhile, the Anantara hospitality group is set to launch its first-ever property in India next year. The 150-room, new-build Anantara Jaipur Hotel is designed with India's ballooning market for destination weddings in mind: it will have event facilities that can accommodate as many as 2,500 guests. In the meantime, the city and wider region are becoming more accessible than ever, thanks to a new six-lane expressway that connects Jaipur to New Delhi, a major hub for international flights. — Flora Stubbs

Shinta Mani Mustang, Nepal

Courtesy of Shinta Mani Mustang

A once-forbidden kingdom is now home to some truly palatial digs. Nepal’s Mustang district, which opened to outsiders in 1992 , is a place to watch in 2024 thanks to this stunning, 29-suite hotel, which welcomed its first guests in August. Shinta Mani Mustang, the latest property from the Bensley Collection, delivers the luxurious wellness experiences and thoughtful design that devotees of the brand have come to expect. Guests can spend their days trekking the surrounding Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, searching for rare wildlife like the Pallas’s cat and Tibetan wolf, horseback riding, and visiting local villages. “What caught my attention was that the outstanding aesthetics and architecture are in sync with sustainable and responsible tourism,” said Carole Cambata, an advisor on T+L's A-List and expert in Himalayan travel. “They sourced local building materials and used Indigenous construction methods.” The noteworthy opening comes at a time of positive change: in April, the Nepal Mountaineering Academy and the Nepal Tourism Board partnered on a program to educate the country’s first-ever class of LGBTQ+ trekking guides, CNN reported , in an effort to make Nepal’s hiking and climbing industries more inclusive. “Nepal is one of Asia’s most progressive countries for LGBTQ+ people due to laws that forbid gender identity discrimination,” said John Clifford , another A-List advisor. “Visitors to the country can even select ‘other’ as an option for gender identification on their visas.” — Samantha Falewée

Tallinn, Estonia

Nina Ruggiero/Travel + Leisure

This country’s literacy and secondary education rates consistently rank near the top in Europe, especially among women, so it should come as no surprise that Tartu, the university city to the southeast of Tallinn, has been designated Europe’s Capital of Culture for 2024 . Still, for first-timers to the Baltics, there’s no better place to get schooled than the country’s capital city, Tallinn: its walled Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved examples of Medieval architecture in the world. PoCo Art Museum , which opened in May with pop art by Andy Warhol, Banksy, David Hockney, and Jeff Koons, is now one of nearly 50 art institutions in the city, joining Fotografiska (world-renowned photography), Kumu Art Museum (contemporary Estonian art), and Kadriorg Art Museum (early European and Russian art). After soaking in the culture, head for the Noblessner district , an industrial shipyard area turned seafront hot spot that’s now bursting with stylish cafes, shops, and Estonia’s first restaurant with two Michelin stars, 180° by Matthias Diethe . (You might also try a “ smoke sauna ” at Scandi-chic Iglupark .) As for where to stay, the new Nunne Boutique Hotel has views over Old Town’s Towers Square . —  Nina Ruggiero

Warsaw, Poland

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

The thriving contemporary art scene in Warsaw, which is home to art-circuit stalwarts like the Foksal Gallery Foundation and Raster Gallery , will get a big boost in 2024, when the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw finally moves into its own headquarters. Founded in 2005, the museum has burnished the city’s art reputation for two decades, with its holdings of both foreign and Polish work, despite operating out of temporary spaces. The new HQ will be part of a 22-acre arts district centered on the existing Palace of Culture and Science, a Stalinist skyscraper that towers over the city. The museum, along with a new 800-seat TR Warszaw Theater nearby, was designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners , the architecture firm behind other notable institutions, including the Glenstone Museum in Maryland and portions of New York’s Corning Museum of Glass . — Denny Lee

For the Food and Drinks

The austrian countryside.

Journey south of Vienna and you’ll find two of the regions that give the countryside of Austria its fairy-tale quality. Styria has rolling hills and hiking trails, with the medieval city of Graz at its heart. Mellow, rural Burgenland is home to Lake Neusiedl, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both regions have a long, rich history of winemaking, and in recent years, have become the site of a burgeoning natural wine scene. Cult producers such as Winery Maria and Sepp Muster and Alice & Roland Tauss should be at the top of any visitor’s list, as should Burgenland’s beloved vintners Gut Oggau and Meinklang . Then, round out a visit to the country with a stay at Rosewood Schloss Fuschl , a meticulously restored 15th-century castle opening on the shores of a small lake near Salzburg in spring 2024. — Peter Terzian

Mérida, Mexico

Itzel Garrido/Travel + Leisure

The capital of Yucatán, this city has long been popular with Mexican travelers drawn to its Maya ruins, cerulean-blue cenotes, restored haciendas, and incredible food . But it has a growing acclaim among international visitors — especially LGBTQ+ travelers, who often describe Yucatán as very gay friendly . Mérida’s historic beauty and laid-back cantina culture might explain why LGBTQ+ retirees have embraced the city in recent years, buying homes and bringing their friends along. Those not ready to make a full-on move will find lots of designer hotels carved out of stately mansions, not to mention wonderful shopping and plenty of food tours, both in the city and in the surrounding countryside, which is punctuated by haciendas, many of which host pop-up events or even overnight guests. Plans for a sprawling new “ Yucatán Central Park ,” with a food market and amphitheater, remain hazy, as does an exact timeline for the arrival of the ballyhooed Maya Train , which is nearing completion and should make it easier to hop between Mérida and popular seaside spots such as Cancún and Tulum. — Denny Lee

Sonoma County, California

Gentl & Hyers

More than double the size of Napa, Sonoma might offer twice as much to do. It’s not just about the wine — though with the addition of a new American Viticultural Area (AVA) called West Sonoma Coast last year, Sonoma County now has 19 AVAs slinging chardonnay, pinot noir, and zinfandel at established wineries, such as Flowers and Scribe , and new ones, including Vérité Wines . There’s also a long coastline to explore, from Bodega Bay up to Sea Ranch, where the dreamy, cliff-top Sea Ranch Lodge is newly renovated . Inland, the opening of Dawn Ranch shines a spotlight on Guerneville , a crunchy town along the Russian River known for its LGBTQ+ scene and proximity to the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. Tear yourself from the 22-acre haven, with tree house–like cabins, creekside glamping tents, and alfresco redwood tubs at the idyllic spa, to bike into town where the reimagined Piknik Market serves one of Oprah’s favorite biscuits . The changes coming to Sonoma County in 2024 are largely shaped by the area’s most famous chefs: in Healdsburg, California, Noma alum Stu Stalker debuted the plant-based restaurant Second Story, above Little Saint and down the street from Michelin three-starred SingleThread and chef Dustin Valette’s The Matheson . Restaurant powerhouse Charlie Palmer plans to launch his hotel brand, Appellation , in Healdsburg by the end of next year. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

For Big-city Thrills

Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leisure

“It’s a classic Asian megacity: frenetic, neon-lit, and overwhelming to the senses,” said Jack Tydeman , a Southeast Asia specialist at Audley Travel and member of T+L's A-List. But change is coming to Bangkok, in the form of many megaprojects, including Dusit Central Park, which is slated to open in 2024, with the 259-room Dusit Thani Bangkok Hotel and a multi-terraced roof park. Also coming soon will be King Rama IX Memorial Park, a park that honors the sustainability initiatives of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Meanwhile, Lumpini Park , Bangkok’s original public green space, is getting a massive refresh next year that will add a new food hall, a vegetable farm, and a sports club ahead of its centennial. Even while sprinting to finish these new developments, Bangkok is finding time to slow down and prioritize wellness. Luxury travel network Virtuoso recently named Thailand as just one of five “emerging self-care destinations” worldwide, noting that “travelers are seeking a more spiritual journey, turning to Thailand for more than the traditional Thai massage.” The forthcoming Aman Nai Lert Bangkok , slated for 2024, is sure to deliver, with 52 spacious suites overlooking Nai Lert Park and a multifloor wellness sanctuary. — Susmita Baral

The year ahead has the Land set to shine, thanks to national and international events, world-class cultural expansions, and the rebirth of historic hotels. It all starts in April, when the NCAA Women’s Final Four comes to the state-of-the-art Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse and a total solar eclipse sweeps over the city on April 8, 2024. Cleveland will see even more action when the Pan-American Masters Games crisscross the city July 12-21. And in November, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which was held in Brooklyn in 2023, will return home. Meanwhile, many institutions are in the midst of revitalization. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is nearing completion of its multiyear $150-million expansion, with updated exhibits and new public spaces in University Circle. Karamu House , the nation’s oldest Black producing theater, will debut a new restaurant, outdoor stage, and an additional venue in the Fairfax neighborhood. The city’s oldest hotel will reopen in 2024 after extensive renovations as a Marriott Autograph Collection called Hotel Cleveland. Also coming is the Fidelity Hotel, a new boutique property with a speakeasy that's slated to launch in a landmark building downtown. There’s development along the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie, too, where paved hiking and biking trails are livening up a waterfront that has, for many decades, been underutilized. — Jennifer Salerno Yong

Fort Worth, Texas

Mariah Tyler

Offering classic Western experiences like bull riding, cattle drives, and stock shows, Fort Worth, Texas, is booming, bringing in $3 billion in tourism revenue last year alone. With all of the renewed interest in the city, luxury hotels are flocking to Cowtown’s Cultural District. The Crescent Hotel, Fort Worth opened in November, home to the first-ever wellness club by Canyon Ranch and a Mediterranean restaurant by Food Network chef Preston Paine. Bowie House, Auberge Resorts Collection , is slated to open its doors December 2023, with a tree-lined pool terrace, chic spa, and upscale chophouse called Bricks and Horses. Walking distance from both hotels is The National Cowgirl Museum , which will run a 2024 exhibit honoring the Mexican female horseback riding tradition of escaramuza charra . Looking ahead, the National Juneteenth Museum is scheduled to open in the city’s Historic Southside neighborhood in 2025. — Mariah Tyler

Turkey’s style capital is seeing a resurgence of life along the Bosphorus, thanks in part to the Galataport, the world’s first underground cruise ship terminal with a pedestrian promenade and the Renzo Piano–designed Istanbul Museum of Modern Art just above. Another neighborhood anchor is the 177-room Peninsula Hotel , spread out over four buildings, three of which date to the early 1900s. Highlights include a glittering pool facing the Hagia Sophia; a sprawling, subterranean spa; and Gallada, a rooftop restaurant from whiz kid chef Fatih Tutak, whose eponymous restaurant is Turkey’s first to earn two Michelin stars. The hotel staff wears posh uniforms courtesy of Arzu Kaprol, a designer who has a boutique in the nearby Paket Postanesi, a historic post office turned chic shopping mall. Also on the waterfront, in Beşiktaş, the lavish Çırağan Palace Kempinski has been reimagined by local interior designer Serdar Gülgün, with rooms that lean into Ottoman-era grandeur (think tulip-pattern motifs and mother-of-pearl furniture). Finally, don’t miss The Basilica Cistern, open again after a five-year closure, and now hosting contemporary art exhibits amid the ancient columns. — Jacqui Gifford

Kansas City, Missouri

Jonathan Tasler/Courtesy of Visit KC

World famous for barbecue and jazz, KC is now staking a claim as a global leader in sports and entertainment — and not just because of Taylor and Travis . In March, the Kansas City Current, of the National Women's Soccer League, will open the first-ever purpose-built stadium for women’s pro sports. “It will be a destination for sports lovers and will inspire generations of girls to follow their dreams,” said Katie Mabry van Dieren, CEO and curator of The Strawberry Swing , a brand that organizes events and pop-ups in the city, as well as Shop Local KC , a string of boutiques. The stadium’s construction has spurred other developments around the city, including the forthcoming Origen Hotel KC , a 118-room boutique property; the massive Berkley Beer Garden; and an extension of the free KC Streetcar that will serve the Berkley Riverfront area. Also coming soon is the country’s first entertainment district of its kind, the Rock Island Bridge , a reclaimed rail crossing over the Kansas River. “Visitors will be able to enjoy two levels of entertainment with food from two restaurants and three bars, plus a covered event space with a dance floor and open veranda seating overlooking the river and city,” a source told T+L of the High Line–inspired project that will connect Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas. — Jalyn Robinson

Just when you think Sin City can’t get any bigger, louder, or glitzier, Las Vegas turns it up another notch. On the heels of blockbuster residencies from Adele , Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, U2 kicked off their inaugural stint at the long-anticipated Sphere this fall. Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky’s immersive sci-fi production “Postcard from Earth” will also show off the new arena’s 16K LED display, beginning this fall and continuing through 2024. Formula 1 and Netflix’s Formula 1: Drive to Survive captured a growing American audience for the international racing circuit, and the Las Vegas Grand Prix will hit The Strip Nov. 16-18, 2023, and again Nov. 21-23, 2024. It won’t be the only megaevent on the sports calendar: Las Vegas will host Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium, marking the first time the game will take place in Nevada. Still not enough? The 67-story Fontainebleau Las Vegas will open in December with 3,700 rooms and a ton of buzzy restaurants, including a Casa Dragones Tasting Room and a Chinese noodle den from the restaurateur behind Wagamama and Hakkasan. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Louisville, Kentucky

The Kentucky Derby will celebrate its 150th anniversary on May 4, 2024, as well as the debut of the redesigned Churchill Downs Paddock, which is coming off a multiyear, $200-million renovation. Those that can’t make race day can brush up on the event’s history and culture year-round at the Kentucky Derby Museum , which has interactive exhibits on subjects like Black horsemen’s contributions to racing . Continue on theme at Derby City Hotel, a Canopy by Hilton property, which will open in downtown Louisville this summer with 168 rooms plus a rooftop pool and bar, or opt for another new property, such as The Myriad Hotel, Common Bond Hotel Collection , or the trendy Hotel Genevieve by Bunkhouse Group. Also coming in 2024 is “Ali,” a musical about the Louisville icon, which opens at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts in the fall. There’s news on the spirits scene, too, including the launch of Bourbon and Belonging – Kentucky’s Queer Bourbon Week, a statewide celebration running Oct. 3-6, 2024, that will have events in Louisville and beyond. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

As close as you can get to Europe without the transatlantic flight, this island city of nearly 2 million is newly relevant in the year ahead, thanks to forward-thinking infrastructure that’s made it one of the greenest and most visitor-friendly spots in North America. The Réseau Express Métropolitain, or REM, is a new automated light rail system that Canada’s Globe and Mail calls “ Montreal’s biggest public transit project in more than half a century ,” with a growing number of stations coming online in the years ahead. (All of them are or will be “ universally accessible .”) The Grand Quay, the city-center pier that many cruise ships use, has a new attraction in the form of the Port of Montreal Tower , a blocky observation spire that echoes the look of the famed Habitat 67 nearby. Meanwhile, the city’s bike-sharing program, Bixi, which launched back in 2009, is still going strong and now offers an all-you-can-bike monthly pass for just $14 that makes using the system a no brainer; the city’s 560 miles of bike lanes help, too. The recently renovated Vogue Hotel Montreal Downtown, Curio Collection by Hilton , and the new-in-2023 Honeyrose Hotel, Montreal, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel , join the four-year-old Four Seasons in adding a touch of luxury that had, perhaps, been missing in the heart of the city. That said, Montreal has more than 24,000 hotel rooms — and plenty of Airbnbs — across the metro area, which will make it an ideal last-minute destination for eclipse watchers who want to be in the path of totality on April 8. — Paul Brady

When Paris hosts 329 distinct sporting events next summer, the whole city will be on display: the first-ever Olympic Games breakdancing competition will be at Place de la Concorde; beach volleyball courts will skirt the Eiffel Tower; and the opening ceremony’s Parade of Nations will sail down the Seine River. The host city of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games (July 26-August 11) and Paralympic Games (August 28-September 8) will welcome visitors with a flurry of new hotels and restaurants. Chateau des Fleurs is an extravagant new stay in the eighth arrondissement with 19th-century style and an haute Korean restaurant. Celebrated hotel designer Martin Brudnizki just unveiled two projects : the 50-room Grand Mazarin , in the Marais, and La Fantaisie in the ninth. And the hoteliers behind the Hôtel Dame Des Arts , which appeared on T+L’s 2023 It List , unveiled their train-themed Hôtel des Grand Voyageurs in Saint-Germain-des-Prés in October. The legacy establishments have new life, too: Hotel Plaza Athénée , named the best hotel in Paris by T+L readers, has a French restaurant, Jean Imbert au Plaza Athénée, which recently scored two Michelin stars, to say nothing of the property’s brand-new Dior Spa. And the sumptuous La Tour d’Argent restaurant just got a sensational facelift. Meanwhile, “numerous museums and institutions will host sports-related exhibitions, films, performances, workshops, and kids’ programming throughout the summer,” writer Lindsey Tramuta reported in T+L’s November 2023 issue. For those in need of a sports break, La Galerie Dior and Fragonard Musée du Parfum are two new additions to the scene worth checking out. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

For Moments on the Water

Coastal alaska.

Cruising is back in a big way, and Alaska's Inside Passage is leading the charge. In 2023, the state saw ships including Regent’s Seven Seas Explorer and Carnival’s Luminosa for the first time, while Royal Caribbean recently sent Brilliance of the Seas north for the first time in years. The new Klawock port, on Prince of Wales Island, is poised to welcome large ships in the 2024 season with food and retail outposts, exhibits detailing Indigenous culture and history, and nature trails. Skagway, a well-known port that’s home to Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park and the scenic White Pass and Yukon Route Railway, is getting a 550-foot floating pier, which will allow the port to host two megaships simultaneously beginning in the 2024 season. Lately, that season has been getting longer: most companies run trips May to September, but Norwegian Cruise Line had October sailings in 2023, which gave passengers a look at Alaskan life during a quieter season. Considering Alaska is projected to notch 1.65 million cruise travelers on around 700 voyages this year, opting for a shoulder season trip in 2024 might not be a bad idea. —  Nina Ruggiero

Coastal Norway

Sebastian Lamberg Torjusen/Courtesy of Salmon Eye

Long known for its cutting-edge design and architectural marvels like the Oslo Opera House, Norway has lately doubled down on building big. “Over the last few years, we’ve seen a surge in new attractions,” confirmed Katrine Mosfjeld, the chief marketing officer for Visit Norway. In seaside Oslo, the new luxury hotel Sommero is a study in adaptive reuse, inside a landmark building from 1930 originally designed by famed Norwegian architects Andreas Bjercke and Georg Eliassen. Four hours southwest, in Kristiansand, the Kunstsilo , or Art Silo, is another repurposed wonder: the one-time industrial complex will reemerge in 2024 as a museum devoted to Nordic modernist art. Up the coast, in Bergen, Iris Expedition Dining is a new tasting-menu destination located in Hardangerfjord, inside a floating sculpture known as the Salmon Eye. North of the Arctic Circle, the long-awaited Six Senses Svart promises to be one of the hottest openings anywhere when it finally debuts. The ring-shaped resort, at the base of the Svartisen glacier, aims to be off-grid, carbon-neutral, and emissions-free, with a zero-waste dining program and a “design lab,” as the hotel calls it, meant to foster further innovation. — Taylor McIntyre

Douro River, Portugal

As recently as a decade ago, almost nobody was talking about wine tourism in Portugal. These days, “you have to see the Douro River,” said Sheree M. Mitchell , a T+L A-List advisor based in the country and the president of Immersa Global. “It’s non-negotiable.” Mitchell’s preferred way to do it is on a yacht charter, which gives guests the chance to spend a few hours or days hitting quintas , or wine estates, and dining at Michelin Guide–approved restaurants like Castas e Pratos . Cruises are a more affordable option, and lines are expanding their presence on the river, which cuts across Spain and Northern Portugal before reaching the Atlantic in the city of Porto. Tauck , a favorite among T+L readers, unveiled the Andorinha in 2021, which will sail 33 wine-country itineraries in 2024. Another T+L reader favorite, Viking, will have four ships on the Douro in the year ahead, visiting towns such as Peso da Régua and Pinhão, in the heart of port country. And AmaWaterways recently announced a special November 2024 departure that will “explore the history of the Black and African diaspora in Lisbon and along Portugal's stunning Douro River,” according to the brand. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Faroe Islands

This remote, starkly beautiful archipelago in the North Atlantic just got way more accessible. Summer 2023 saw Atlantic Airways launch nonstop flights from New York Stewart International, 70 miles north of New York City, to Vágar Airport, in the islands. “This direct flight is not only about easier transport to our great ocean nation, but a means of creating a bridge between two worlds,” Jóhanna á Bergi, CEO of Atlantic Airways, told T+L. The news seems to have been warmly received by U.S. travelers. Melissa Lee , a Northern Europe specialist on T+L’s A-List said she has seen an uptick in interest in the Faroes. "Previously, you could only get there from Copenhagen, or Reykjavik, Iceland.” Once there, a world of adventure awaits, with activities including cold-water surfing , traditional knitting , and hiking to places such as Sørvágsvatn, the so-called lake above the ocean . Then there’s the top-flight dining: the restaurant Roks in Tórshavn, the Faroe Islands’ capital, is an offshoot of Koks, the Michelin two-starred restaurant in Greenland which is presently on hiatus. — Liz Cantrell

Kimberley, Australia

Bruno Cazarini/Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

This destination in northwest Australia, also called The Kimberleys, is home to ancient wonders: dinosaur tracks; striated geological formations, some 350 million years old, known as Bungle Bungles; waterfalls and reefs that seem unmoored from time; and Aboriginal history from what some call the world’s oldest continuous culture . Lately, though, some of the world’s top cruise lines have caught on to all the upside and are racing to offer thrilling expedition-style itineraries that combine all this history with modern-day adventures, such as sightseeing flights by helicopter, paddling, Zodiac tours, scuba diving, and cultural excursions. Silversea will have its Silver Cloud in the region from May through September, doing 10- to 17-day trips, with a maximum of 200 passengers. Seabourn is also bullish on the destination, and its newest expedition ship, the 132-suite Seabourn Pursuit , will spend June, July, and August cruising the region. (Both lines are perennial favorites among T+L readers .) Also operating on this remarkable stretch of coast are several Australian companies , including Coral Expeditions and True North Adventure Cruises , as well as private yacht charters like those organized by Yotspace . — Paul Brady

The Mississippi River

New ships are bringing fresh interest to one of America’s most storied waterways, meaning now’s the time to consider river cruising closer to home. “The Mississippi River is such an important part of American history,” said Adam Peakes, president of Hornblower Group, the parent company of American Queen Voyages. The line will have two ships on the Mississippi in 2024, both of which are already booking up for summer. “Many of our cabin categories are nearly at capacity almost a year in advance,” Peakes added. Other brands are also betting on the river: the Viking Mississippi launched in 2022, with 193 Scandi-chic suites, all with private verandas; American Cruise Lines has launched three new ships on the Mississippi in the past three years. There are new draws on land, too. In Memphis, the newly completed riverfront Tom Lee Park has an installation by artist Theaster Gates and a pavilion named for Tyre Nichols; the expansive riverfront attraction — a collaborative effort from Studio Gang, Scape Studio, and numerous other architectural and design firms — sits just south of Beale Street and is connected to the city via the River Line, a walking and cycling path. Meanwhile Natchez, Mississippi, is these days “filled with surprises, thanks in large part to a cohort of young natives who wandered away and then returned home with new ideas,” according to Southern Living ; come December, the town hosts holiday markets akin to those in Central Europe, as T+L recently reported . In St. Louis, the newest 21c Museum Hotel recently opened in a renovated, century-old YMCA building, with numerous permanent art installations as well as rotating shows and a beautiful, all-day cafe. And, of course, there’s always New Orleans . — Paul Brady

Courtesy of Cunard

Few voyages are as iconic as a transatlantic crossing aboard a Cunard ocean liner. So when the new Queen Anne departs Southampton, England, in May 2024, expectations will be sky-high for the first new Cunard ship to launch since the Queen Elizabeth in 2010. The 1,498-cabin vessel is slated to sail to Lisbon and will then spend its first summer in the Mediterranean. It will also represent an evolution for the 183-year-old brand: Queen Anne will have four new restaurants, including an omakase venue and an Indian dining room, alongside more familiar options such as the Princess Grill and Queens Grill, all overseen in partnership with U.K. chef Michel Roux, Jr. A top-deck wellness studio, with yoga and other fitness classes, will be another noteworthy addition to the ship. A third distinction: Queen Anne will be captained by Inger Klein Thorhauge, the first woman to hold that rank for Cunard. For all the new, some familiar traditions will remain, including proper high tea service and, naturally, an outpost of the Golden Lion pub pouring Cunard’s own microbrews. — Paul Brady

Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Slated to launch in November 2023, Seven Seas Grandeur will be the sixth ship from Regent Seven Seas Cruises, a luxury line that T+L readers consistently say is one of their absolute favorites thanks to no-nonsense, all-inclusive pricing and fabulous suites. The newcomer will feature fresh takes on the elevated dining, shore excursions, and entertainment already found on ships such as Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Explorer , said Andrea DeMarco, the brand’s president. “ Grandeur is inspired by our rich heritage, but we’re reimagining signature restaurants and offering 15 exceptional suite categories to only 746 guests,” she explained. Among the no-expense-spared features of the new ship will be a multimillion-dollar, 1,600-piece art collection that counts among its trophies a handful of Picassos and a custom Fabergé Egg. (Fittingly, the ship’s godmother is Sarah Fabergé, the director of special projects for the jewelry house.) Grandeur ’s inaugural season will be in the Caribbean, but it will head for the Mediterranean in April before returning to the U.S. in August. — Elizabeth Rhodes

For Nature Lovers

Amboseli national park, kenya.

Courtesy of Angama

This 151-square-mile expanse, close to the border with Tanzania, is famed among safari insiders for its big-time wildlife: Amboseli has a well-earned reputation for elephant spotting, with massive herds roaming the dusty plains, along with all sorts of other charismatic creatures including cheetah, giraffe, and zebra. Camps and lodges surrounding the park tend to be basic, which is one reason the fall 2023 opening of the richly appointed Angama Amboseli is so exciting. The second? The 10-suite lodge is the first spinoff of the Angama Mara , a destination hotel that's among the best safari lodges in the world, according to T+L readers . The new property, located about 45 minutes driving from Amboseli National Park, on a private wildlife conservancy, will offer game drives as well as cultural experiences organized in partnership with local communities. Another draw: Angama Amboseli will have unparalleled views of the peak of nearby Mount Kilimanjaro, including from private patios attached to every suite. — Paul Brady

Aspen Mountain, Colorado

The legendary ski destination is getting its biggest makeover in four decades this season, with the opening of a new lift, a high-speed quad known as Hero’s that will make accessible a fresh 153 acres of fluffy powder. The project will increase the mountain’s skiable terrain by some 20 percent, adding more than a dozen new chutes, glades, and trails for intermediate and expert skiers. “The quad is a game-changer for Aspen,” said Maureen Poschman, a spokesperson for the Aspen Chamber Resort Association. “The new terrain is a big area, it’s high-altitude skiing, and it’s a bit of a hedge against climate change,” she noted. Not that you have to be a pro skier to find something to love in ever-evolving Aspen, which experienced an influx of residents the past few years . The cultural calendar is as packed as ever; Balenciaga and Hermès now have shops in the heart of town; and scene-y restaurants, including a Sant Ambroeus coffee bar, keep popping up. Where to stay? Mollie Aspen is the newest luxury hotel in town, slated to open in December with 68 rooms designed by Post Company, plus a rooftop plunge pool and terrace, right in the middle of it all. — Denny Lee

Big Sky, Montana

Mark Hartman

Just an hour from Yellowstone National Park, this wild, wide-open area offers heart-pumping activities such as fly fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and skiing at every turn. So, thankfully, a new retreat from hospitality brand One&Only is slated to bring some rest and relaxation to Big Sky in 2024. Situated between Lone Mountain and the Spanish Peaks, the 73-room Moonlight Basin will provide convenient access to 5,850 skiable acres, with a dedicated gondola connecting guests to Big Sky’s terrain, plus a private ski lodge and a Chenot spa. (The resort will also have 19 villas and 62 private residences.) The first U.S. outpost of One&Only, Moonlight Basin arrives a few years after another five-star resort, Montage Big Sky , which opened in 2021, with 139 rooms, six dining venues, a bowling alley, a huge spa, and, naturally, ski-in, ski-out access. — Alisha Prakash

Hokkaido, Japan

Courtesy of Club Med

Travelers are flocking back to Japan , but in the year ahead, they should look beyond Tokyo and Kyoto. Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s main islands, has a sterling reputation for food — its biggest city, Sapporo, is famous for miso ramen — and its Shiretoko National Park is a natural wonder with excellent hiking and photogenic waterfalls. Hokkaido is also, insiders know, one of the world’s premier ski destinations thanks to simply phenomenal snow . The center of the action is the village of Niseko, which has plenty of hotels, homestays, and resorts — but has gotten a touch easier to visit thanks to the 2022 opening of Club Med Kiroro. The something-for-everyone property has two distinctive concepts, Club Med Kiroro Peak , for guests age 12 and older, and the new-in-2023 Club Med Kiroro Grand , a family-friendly alternative. These all-inclusives are helping to eliminate the intimidation factor when booking a Japanese ski week, by rolling up everything from accommodations and equipment rentals to off-the-mountain entertainment and kids' clubs. Another perk? Club Med Kiroro Grand will also have the brand’s first-ever Japanese onsen alongside other wellness facilities including soaking tubs and saunas. — Danielle Pointdujour

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Sven Musica/Courtesy of Madwaleni River Lodge - Babanango Game Reserve

This out-of-the-way South African province, sometimes shortened to KZN and located on the country’s eastern coast, is moving into the spotlight. “KwaZulu-Natal has two World Heritage Sites — the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the majestic uKhahlamba Drakensberg National Park — and is popular for its beaches, safari parks, green hills, and temperate weather,” said Julian Harrison , a safari expert and longtime member of T+L’s A-List. It’s also home to an ambitious rewilding project backed by the Emcakwini Community Trust , which began reintroducing once-endemic species including black rhino, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, and lion in 2018; today, it’s known as Babanango Game Reserve . Harrison also points to other conservation efforts, such as those underway at andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve , which is monitoring critically endangered Temminck’s ground pangolins. The newly opened Madwaleni River Lodge is the place to stay, said Raza Visram , another A-List expert. “The intimate lodge has 12 beautifully designed tents that overlook the White Umfolozi River,” he explained. There’s also Sala Beach House , an oceanfront escape on Thompson’s Bay that writer Heather Richardson detailed in T+L’s September 2023 issue . Coming soon in KZN will be The Homestead , a 12-suite eco-lodge in the province’s western Nambiti Game Reserve. — Samantha Falewée

Mababe, Botswana

Dana Allen/Courtesy of Wilderness

Long considered one of Africa’s most exclusive safari destinations, Botswana has a huge array of five-star lodges, operated by the likes of African Bush Camps, andBeyond, and Great Plains Conservation. But the most compelling new place to stay isn’t one with high thread count sheets or over-the-top amenities: Mokete, a new safari lodge from Wilderness , is worth the trip because it will only exist until 2026, when the operator pulls down the tents and carries away any sign the nine-suite escape was ever there. The temporary enclave will be situated east of the famed Okavango Delta, in the heart of a 124,000-acre tract known as the Mababe Concession, which has considerable populations of lion, elephant, and buffalo, plus a huge variety of birds. Wildlife watching is the thing here, with all-day game drives and guided nature walks. Mokete is all about an elemental connection with the outdoors, down to the design of the guest quarters: each tent will have a retractable roof so guests can stargaze from bed — and hear the calls of hyenas from the surrounding bush. — Paul Brady

New Zealand

It’s time to take it off your once-in-a-lifetime list and just go : earlier this year, Delta launched service from Los Angeles to Auckland, and United Airlines plans to start a San Francisco to Christchurch route in December. That’s on top of an existing Air New Zealand nonstop between Auckland and New York City that launched in 2022 . “Any time of year is a great time to visit,” said Sarah Farag , a member of T+L’s A-List and the Auckland-based owner and director of Southern Crossings , a luxury travel firm. “Our summer months are always popular,” Farag said of the December to March period, “but those who come at other times are well-rewarded with captivating colors during autumn harvest season, snow-capped adventures and spectacular stargazing in the winter, and fabulous fishing and hiking in spring.” There’s a growing number of enticing stays, including the new exclusive-use villas at Flockhill Lodge , set on a working sheep station, and the Clifftops at Anderson Cove , a tented camp above the Northland coast. Christchurch has recently seen the opening of two new boutique properties, the sleek, modern Mayfair and the artsy Observatory Hotel ; meanwhile the beloved Huka Lodge in Taupo is getting a makeover. If the outdoors are a priority, turn an eye to the North Island’s Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve , the country’s second, which was certified earlier this year, or the new Tom Doak–designed golf course which just opened at Te Arai Links . — Peter Terzian

For Beach Vibes

Anna maria island, florida.

Flavio Vallenari/Getty Images

Compared to some brand-name Florida destinations, this island south of Tampa Bay is way under the radar. But it's cultivated a loyal following, thanks to its no-high-rises shoreline, incredible sunsets, and small-town feel. Case in point: Anna Maria Island is a place where most people tool around by golf cart or beach cruiser, and almost all the sherbet-hued clapboard homes are vacation rentals. In an effort to keep things copacetic, the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, which works on the island, inked a partnership with Leave No Trace this summer, making Anna Maria the first destination in Florida to work with the nonprofit. Meanwhile, new developments fit right in with the vibe: Mello on the Beach , a hotel that opened in July, offers vibrant retro-style apartments on the Gulf of Mexico, while the villas of Joie Inn , which opened in 2021, still feel super-fresh. On the dining scene, the cocktail bar Doctor’s Office recently added a “dining room” to its string-lit outdoor garden, and coming soon to the island is Bohemian, a restaurant from repeat James Beard semifinalist Jeannie Pierola. Getting there has gotten easier thanks to growth at Sarasota-Bradenton International, which added nonstops to four new domestic destinations in 2023. A planned terminal expansion looks to be right-sized, too: the airport aims to add five gates next year. — Jennifer Salerno Yong

Coastal Campania, Italy

It’s no wonder Campania — the southern Italian region that’s home to Amalfi, Capri, Positano, and Sorrento — is having a bit of a hotel boom: visitors have been flocking to this splashy coastal destination over the past few years. The renaissance kicked off with Il Capri Hotel , which opened on the island last spring, offering travelers a boutique option inside a neo-Gothic villa reminiscent of a Venetian palazzo. Next, Oetker Collection, the luxury hotel brand behind the celeb-loved Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France, debuted its first Italian hotel in June: the glamorous, 50-room Hotel La Palma is a fresh take on a property that originally opened in 1822. Then there’s the new Convento di Amalfi , a 52-room Anantara with a cliffside pool, set in a 13th-century Capuchin convent. Airlines have also taken note of the increased demand: American Airlines and Delta are both launching new routes to Naples next year, the former from Philadelphia, the latter from New York City. Lindblad Expeditions, meanwhile, will have its new Sea Cloud II in southern Italy this coming May, for an 11-day itinerary that will take guests to the ancient ruins of Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast’s most beautiful seaside villages, with a focus on Italian food and wine. —  Nina Ruggiero

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

The land of pura vida just keeps getting better, which is why Costa Rica was just named T+L’s 2024 Destination of the Year . Surfers can find their bliss at the new, boho-chic Sendero hotel, which opened in February in oceanside Nosara, on the Nicoya Peninsula. A few hours north, the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo has added the new Virador Beach Club, updated its golf course (while cutting water usage), and opened Wellness Shala, a spa that offers healing treatments with local ingredients like cacao, coconut, and volcanic mud. Nearby, the community of Las Catalinas has announced a new mixed-use space, La Rambla, which will promote spending time outside and car-free living. Forward-thinking tour operator Intrepid Travel has launched new trips that shine a light on the Terraba community, one of Costa Rica’s eight Indigenous groups. Meanwhile local outfitters such as UrriTrek are now offering guided hiking trips on the 174-mile Camino de Costa Rica , a trail connecting the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. — Samantha Falewée

The self-declared Nature Island, Dominica has been voted the best island in the Caribbean for the past two years in T+L’s World’s Best Awards , thanks in part to its serene tropical rain forests, enticing hot springs, and gushing waterfalls. There’s also an ever-growing number of resorts and hotels, such as the InterContinental Dominica Cabrits Resort & Spa , which opened this year, and the forthcoming Anichi Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection , and Tranquility Beach Resort — Curio — a Collection by Hilton . Also of note is the new 32-nautical-mile Waitukubuli Sea Trail, which takes sea-kayakers along the island's western coast from Scott’s Head to Capuchin; Soufrière Outdoor Centre can supply equipment, an itinerary, and a guide. And there’s another element to Dominica’s story that’s capturing the attention of travelers who care about sustainability. The volcanically active country plans to commission its first geothermal power plant in 2024, and in the meantime gets about a quarter of its overall power from hydroelectric sources. It’s also home to what T+L has called one of the world’s most eco-friendly resorts, Coulibri Ridge . — Annie Archer

Hawai’i Island

Courtesy of Rosewood Resorts

“We welcome mindful visitors to Hawai‘i Island,” said Ilihia Gionson, the public affairs officer of the Hawai'i Tourism Authority, in an interview with T+L. Commonly known as the Big Island, the destination is planning for a meaningful 2024, with the help of returning visitors. “Travelers have the opportunity to help mālama , or care for, our natural resources and support our community to ensure a regenerative model of tourism that is sustained for generations,” Gionson said. The theme of mālama is more significant than ever this year following the devastating fires that impacted both Hawai’i Island and Maui in 2023. Those looking to support relief efforts have many choices, including the Hawaii Red Cross, the Lāhainā Restoration Foundation, and more . Travelers ready to return might consider Kona Village, an iconic hotel that reopened in 2023 as a Rosewood Resort following its closure in 2011. “Each villa feels like your own little beach house,” Nicole Hollis, the interior designer of Kona Village, told T+L . Various events are on the island’s cultural calendar in the year ahead, including the Kona Brewers Festival in March and the Big Island Chocolate Festival in April. — Christine Burroni

Los Cabos, Mexico

Mariah Tyler/Travel + Leisure

With its rugged desert-meets-ocean landscape, 350 days a year of sun, and stunning five-star resorts, Los Cabos isn’t exactly an unexpected choice for a dreamy vacation. But 2024 promises to be a big year for the Baja California destination, thanks to all the new resorts coming to Cabo del Sol, the 1,800-acre community just east of Cabo San Lucas with two miles of beach and two 18-hole golf courses. Four Seasons Resort Cabo San Lucas at Cabo Del Sol and Soho House Beach Club are expected to open in the first part of 2024; Park Hyatt Los Cabos at Cabo Del Sol will join them by the end of the year. On the southern shore of the peninsula — and not far from the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal , a T+L reader fave — there’s even more happening: the resort community of Quivira Los Cabos will welcome the 120-room St. Regis Los Cabos at Quivira by late 2024, with access to 2.5 miles of beach and its own Jack Nicklaus golf course. — Danielle Pointdujour

Mallorca, Spain

Lara D'Agostino/Travel + Leisure

The sparkling waters, delicious food, and laid-back atmosphere are all still here — and Americans are loving United’s summertime nonstop service from Newark Liberty International. In the year ahead, though, they’ll be visiting for the booming luxury hotel scene, which is poised to help this island steal the spotlight from its western neighbor, Ibiza. One must-see is Son Bunyola , a Virgin Limited Edition retreat on Mallorca’s northwest coast, with three miles of beautiful coastline backed by olive groves. Sir Richard Branson first purchased the property in 1994, as T+L recently reported , but it only opened to guests this summer, with 26 rooms and suites, plus three villas. Nearby is The Lodge Mallorca , a Small Luxury Hotels of the World retreat that opened in May, which has wood-fired dining and extensive wellness programming. Then there’s the first hotel from 22-time Grand Slam champion and Majorcan Rafael Nadal, whose new Zel lifestyle brand has opened — what else? — Zel Mallorca , an approachable, beachy hotel in partnership with Meliá, the Spanish operator. Coming soon, said Clare Watkins, an expert in the Balearic Islands at Red Savannah , are more exciting properties: Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor will be a top-to-bottom refresh of a century-old hotel, while Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra, Mallorca, will have 131 rooms, plus 44 suites and nine bungalows, overlooking the sea just outside Palma. — Danielle Pointdujour

For Adventurous Travelers

Alula, saudi arabia.

Didier Marti/Getty Images

Of all the ambitious tourism developments in Saudi Arabia, AlUla may be the most enchanting, which may explain why Qatar Airways recently launched new flights to the destination from its Doha hub. This huge sweep of red rocks and desert in the country’s northwest is home to Hegra, a 2,000-year-old archeological site filled with soaring tombs carved by the Nabataean civilization, the same one that built Petra, in modern-day Jordan. After touring ancient history, visitors can retreat to decadent contemporary hotels, including a forthcoming 36-room luxury resort at Hegra that will sensitively incorporate parts of an old railway station and fort. A short drive away, in AlUla’s Old Town, the contrast of old and new continues; the new 30-room eco-hotel Dar Tantora , for example, eschews electricity in favor of candlelight. In the year ahead, more fresh thinking will touch down in AlUla, courtesy of Wadi AlFann, or Valley of the Arts, a permanent showcase of works from big-name international artists. The best way to see it might be from on high, duringca April’s “AlUla Skies” festival, when helicopters and hot air balloons will soar above Instagram-worthy monuments. —  Jacqui Gifford

Bahia, Brazil

Marta Tucci

This coastal state, situated between the Amazon and Rio de Janeiro, is the sort of place most Americans never quite get to — and that’s a shame. Its coastline offers some of the most mythical surf-and-sand spots in the world, including Itacaré, which is home to the community-minded Barracuda Hotel & Villas , and the boho-chic enclave of Trancoso, a place that “first captured the imagination of the international creative set back in the 1980s,” as T+L reported in the September 2023 issue . “The beaches are some of the most picturesque in Brazil,” said Paul Irvine , an expert in the country and member of T+L’s A-List. But, he added, there’s more to Bahia than the coast. “We’ve started sending our more adventurous clients to the Chapada Diamantina National Park ,” he said, “which has its own vibrant, off-grid hippy culture.” While high-end hotels in the area are in short supply, more villa accommodations are popping up all the time. One thing to keep in mind for 2024: Brazil stopped requiring a visa for U.S. citizens back in 2019, but the country’s tourism officials have said that the mandate will return on Jan. 10, though further details on how to apply and any fees have yet to be announced. — Paul Brady

Northern Pakistan

Courtesy of Intrepid Travel

The northern reaches of this South Asian nation have a growing profile in the adventure-travel world, thanks to striking topography, high-elevation lakes, and precipitous peaks. Consider that, in 2023, Intrepid Travel launched a 12-day women-only expedition to the region, a first for the tour operator, which has similar trips in places such as Jordan, India, and Morocco. Intrepid will return in 2024 — with departures in May, September, and October — taking women to ancient villages, alpine lakes, and historic forts; travelers will have ample opportunity to meet with locals in areas that would be off-limits if men were part of the group, according to Intrepid. Other outfitters are heading to Northern Pakistan as well. Wild Frontiers will debut a brand-new, 14-day walking adventure that will no doubt challenge the bodies and minds of those who are up for it, with several full-day hikes, some above 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). The payoff comes in the form of staggeringly beautiful landscapes — not to mention the chance to make connections with people you meet along the way and see historic gems in Islamabad, the trip’s jumping off point. — Alisha Prakash

Peru's Trekking Routes

In a country where all roads seemingly lead to spectacular scenery and historic finds, there’s much more to explore beyond majestic Machu Picchu. These days, travelers have more options for getting off familiar routes thanks to the efforts of companies such as Alpaca Expeditions , an Indigenous-owned outfitter that will lead its first-ever, all-women hiking trip on the Salkantay Trail in 2024. Operated by women — including guides, porters, drivers, chefs, and other staff — for women, the seven-day adventure will include stays high in the Andes and cultural experiences such as cooking classes and farm visits that aren’t typical on more popular Inca Trail trips. Meanwhile the tour operator Intrepid Travel debuted in 2023 a 12-day expedition on the Great Inca Road in northern Peru. Starting in Huaraz and culminating at the Inca site of Huanuco Pampa, the trek will immerse hikers in this less-visited region’s nature and culture, including plentiful archeological sites. — Alisha Prakash

South Australia

ROBERT LANG/Courtesy of South Australia Tourism Commission

Visitors to this low-key state may feel like they’re in on a big-time secret with all that’s happening lately. The biggest news may be Australia’s new national park, Nilpena Ediacara , which opened in April and gives travelers a look at the oldest known fossils on the planet. “They’re about 550 million years old,” Mary L. Droser, an American paleontologist, explained in a recent interview with T+L . Across South Australia’s wine country, meanwhile, hotels such as Le Mas Barossa , Sequoia Lodge , and The Vineyard McLaren Vale are gateways to the hundreds of vineyards and cellar doors just outside of Adelaide, the state capital. “South Australia is known as the wine state for a reason,” said Tim Duval, the winemaker at John Duval Wines . Travelers can learn about small-batch wineries (including Duval’s) at Artisans of Barossa ; sample eco-conscious shiraz at Bird in Hand ; and enjoy a tasting in The Cube, a five-story structure fashioned after an unfinished Rubik’s Cube, at d’Arenberg . Another notable stay can be found on Kangaroo Island, where the famed Southern Ocean Lodge is slated to reopen in December after the disastrous bushfires of 2020. — Samantha Lauriello

Tatiana Kashko/Getty Images

This small South Asian island nation has big things on offer. “You can cover a lot of ground in two weeks, with loads of variety in the landscapes, from gorgeous beaches to lush jungles to high mountains to historic cities,” said Catherine Heald, co-founder and CEO of Remote Lands, a luxury travel firm. This year, the tea company Dilmah opened two boutique stays under its Reverie brand, Kayaam House and Ahu Bay ; Sri Lankan–owned hotel group Uga is debuting Uga Riva in Negombo this November; and for foodies, Red Savannah recently rolled out a culinary tour of Sri Lanka. Political unrest in 2022 took the destination off the table for many travelers, acknowledged Rachel Cooper , a South Asia travel expert at Red Savannah. But, she added, "the new government has introduced measures to protect and encourage a positive traveler experience throughout the country.” — Susmita Baral

The Arisen looks at a griffin’s nest with a portcrystal in it in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Portcrystals are one of the rarest and most potent items in Dragon’s Dogma 2 . They act as anchors that you can fast travel to — as long as you have a ferrystone, that is.

But how come every town doesn’t have a portcrystal? How can you get more portcrystals? And once you do find more, where should you put them?

In this Dragon’s Dogma 2 guide, we’ll show you a list of portcrystals, tell you where to get more portcrystals , and offer our suggestion on the best locations to place portcrystals .

Permanent portcrystal locations in Dragon’s Dogma 2

If you’re sticking to the main story, the first portcrystal you find will likely be the one in Vernworth .

Naturally, you might assume it’s a fast travel point, and there are plenty more in the game. Nope. The Vernworth portcrystal is one of only two stationary crystals in Dragon’s Dogma 2 . The other is in Harve Village , a bit west of Vernworth.

As of this writing, every other portcrystal in the game we’ve found is a mobile one that you can pick up and move at will.

How to get more portcrystals in Dragon’s Dogma 2

best place to visit in 1000 islands

Portcrystals come from a variety of different sources, and you can get a total of six during your first playthrough, not counting microtransactions.

You can find one portcrystal by riding a Vermund griffin to its nest, which you can do by just jumping on its back and attacking it until it tries to run home. When it brings you to its nest — or if you find the nest in the southern part of the Misty Marshes (seen on the map above) — you’ll find a portcrystal just lying inside.

In Battahl , during the main quest, you’ll come across the Dragonforged smith in the Bay Wayward Shrine. Here, you can trade Wyrmslife Crystals with him in exchange for powerful upgrades to your weapons and armor. For 20 of your Wyrmslife Crystals, he’ll sell you a single portcrystal.

Additionally, there are four portcrystals that you can get from quests in the game.

best place to visit in 1000 islands

There are three (four if you’re clever) quests that give you a portcrystal when you complete them:

  • “Feast of Deception”
  • “A Trial of Archery”
  • “A Game of Wits”

You’ll get your first portcrystal from Captain Brant after completing the “ Feast of Deception ” quest.

For your second portcrystal, you can find an elf named Glyndwr in the city square of Vernworth. He’ll give you the “Gift of the Bow” quest, which will eventually lead to the “ A Trial of Archery ” quest. Follow his questline and you’ll get a portcrystal as a reward.

The third and fourth portable portcrystal can both come from the Sphinx who gives you riddles throughout “ A Game of Wits .”

First, the Riddle of Madness asks you to place your most beloved friend in front of the Sphinx. Grab your main pawn, toss them up to the platform, and the Sphinx will hand over her one and only portcrystal.

However, during the Riddle of Conviction , the Sphinx will ask you to give her your most precious item in the world. She’ll act like she’s going to take it from you, but will instead give it back to you and give you a fully functional duplicate. If you hand her the portcrystal you just received from the Riddle of Madness, you’ll walk away two portcrystals richer.

Best portcrystal locations in Dragon’s Dogma 2

best place to visit in 1000 islands

The major towns in Dragon’s Dogma 2 are very spread out. And we all know how rough fast travel via oxcart is. Ferrystones cannot fail, so if you want to travel reliably, you’ll need to have a portstone in each of the game’s major locations.

Here are our suggestions of the best locations to place your portcrystals , which you can see reflected in the map above:

  • The Sphinx’s current lair
  • Checkpoint Rest Town
  • Volcanic Island Camp
  • Sacred Arbor
  • The Dragonforged smith
  • The Battahl Ropeway Central Station

One last note: For reasons we won’t go into here, you’ll want to have your portcrystals spread out as much as possible before you kill the final boss and enter the endgame. So consider moving some of your portcrystals to the corners of the map before completing the game’s final quest.

The expansive country of Canada is a destination to be reckoned with. Filled with a diversity of landscapes and welcoming people, Canada has pockets of beauty and charm across the nation complete with exciting food scenes, outdoor escapes, and breathtaking natural wonders. The birthplace of artists like Celine Dion, Drake, and Ryan Gosling is also a mecca for some seriously cool cultural hubs—making it the perfect place to witness the country’s next generation of exciting creatives.

Looking to head north and explore the Maple Leaf Nation? Read ahead for some of the best places to visit in Canada from coast to coast.

Give Into Nature at Banff National Park

Marvel at the 2,564 square miles of wilderness with a visit to Banff National Park . A favorite Rocky Mountain escape in both summer and winter, this natural wonderland is filled with picturesque lakes, tree-covered peaks, and towering glaciers. In warmer months, come for the 1,000 miles of hiking trails, take gondolas up to the mountain summits for spectacular views, or hop in a canoe for a scenic excursion through the lakes. In snowy seasons, hit the world-class ski resorts or take to the trails in snow shoes.

Stay Here: Fairmont Banff Springs is a historic hotel in the region and a must-visit when staying in the park. The castle-like architecture is truly awe-inspiring, as is the impressive spa.

Hit the Slopes at Whistler

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Person Snow Helmet Leisure Activities Skiing and Sport

Skiers and snowboarders from around the globe flock to the 8,000-acre property of Whistler Blackcomb Resort . The stunning mountainous retreat in British Columbia is a favorite thanks to its dynamic runs, ranging from beginner-friendly to some of the steepest in North America. (Word to the wise: don’t take Couloir Extreme unless you are practically a pro.) Winter sports fans will be happy to learn that they can easily access the mountain with an Epic Pass or daily lift ticket.

Outside of the slopes, visitors can enjoy a vibrant, yet laid-back après-ski culture (think more post-slope brews over Aspen champagne showers). Favorites at the base of the mountain include The GLC or Après Après. If you're not skiing or want a break from winter sports, enjoy a spa day or explore the charming town itself.

Stay Here: Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler is the perfect option for visitors who want a luxe mountain experience. The resort offers both suites and townhouses if you want to bring the whole family or a group of friends. Just a short five-minute walk or shuttle to the slopes from a ski concierge, it’s easy to enjoy the hotel and the mountain.

Canada’s smallest province is full of charm. Perhaps most famous as the setting of the book series Anne of Green Gables , Prince Edward Island is full of stretches of beaches, lighthouses, strawberry fields, and quaint towns. Walkers and cyclists can enjoy the newly opened Island Walk, which offers a 435-mile trail around the province to explore. Make sure to stop at the preserved village of Charlottetown, see the red sand beaches, and enjoy the local fare including incredibly fresh mussels and oysters at Blue Mussel Cafe . For accommodations, choose between elegant country inns and rustic bed and breakfasts around the island.

Taste the Cuisine of Montreal

Image may contain City Road Street Urban Alley Person Architecture Building Cityscape Night Life and Chair

Foodies and Francophiles should make a beeline for Montreal, the cultural metropolis of Québec. The French influence on the local architecture, language, and cuisine is strong, but expect more Canadian-friendly charm than Parisian directness. Plan ahead to secure reservations at Vin Mon Lapin for the most creative, high-end (but surprisingly low-key) dining in the province with an incredible natural wine selection. You can also book a table or bar seat at L’Express for a classic brasserie experience. (Pro tip: don’t end your meal without ordering the incredible île flottante for dessert.) Vin Papillon is another favorite for an elevated yet casual meal with plenty of impressive wines by the glass, while Le Passé Composé takes brunch to the next level. Of course, your culinary adventure in Montreal is not complete without a visit to St.-Viateur for their iconic bagels or La Banquise for a late-night snack of poutine.

For scenic moments, explore the European buildings in Vieux-Port, walk along the Lachine Canal, or see the entire city from Kondiaronk Belvedere. For shopping, head to Mile End’s vintage haven Marché Floh or make an appointment at SSENSE for a personal shopping experience through the latest designer collections.

Stay Here: Hôtel William Gray is a modern escape within the Vieux-Port neighborhood. Complete with well-appointed rooms, a rooftop bar with an excellent view, and a luxe spa, it’s a perfect location to return to after your late-night excursions. A favorite local speakeasy The Coldroom can even be found right across the street.

Experience the Majesty of Niagara Falls

Image may contain Outdoors Nature Scenery Water and Waterfall

Niagara Falls is an incredibly popular tourist destination for a reason. The awe-inspiring waterfalls are a sight that can’t be missed. After taking a boat tour to experience the landmark, consider heading a little north to Niagara-on-the-Lake for a calmer, more elevated experience away from the flashiness of Niagara Falls. The 19th-century town is home to an acclaimed theater festival as well as wineries, nearby hiking, and spas.
