Placed on yellow alert for strong winds, the city of Ponant was the scene of a rare accident.

In its port, the Renaissance liner broke its moorings, no doubt pushed by the violent gusts that swept Finistère.

Around 2:30 p.m., the imposing liner began to drift into the harbour.

According to the maritime prefecture of the Atlantic, the ship hit another boat which was on the other side of the port.

The collision with the long LNG carrier caused no injuries.

No pollution was observed.

The alert was quickly given by the commercial port and several tugs were mobilized in the port to push the imposing liner.

Five boats and a coastal tug, the Buffle, brought the Renaissance back to its dock.

CFC: Renaissance Makes Its Debut and Impresses

Compagnie Française de Croisières embarked on its journey last summer with its first fleet, Renaissance, showcasing a strong identity and a high-quality product.

In a time when, despite the pandemic-induced slowdown, dozens of new ships are launched every year, there’s a new initiative in the cruise market that stands out. It involves reviving beautiful ships, often with a rich history in the world of cruising, and bringing them back to life, offering the opportunity to enjoy vessels that undoubtedly deserve an extended lifespan.

Compagnie Française de Croisières not only accomplished this intriguing transformation but also invested a substantial 30 million euros in the refurbishment of a former prestigious Holland America Line ship. Furthermore, the company aimed to define a distinct cruise product, setting it apart from many other cruise lines while adhering to a well-defined philosophy.

Renaissance CFC

The company’s name itself hints at its primary target market being the French-speaking one, encompassing not only France but also various European regions like Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and even Canada. Some groups from Canada have already embarked on journeys during the inaugural summer and autumn season. Compagnie Française de Croisières’s project also stands out for another significant characteristic: it centers around France as a homeport and exclusively offers no-fly cruises, meaning all trips start and end at French ports. This approach further strengthens the company’s ties to the country, offering a diverse selection of embarkation ports, ranging from the North Atlantic (Le Havre) to the Mid-Atlantic (Bordeaux) and all the way to the Mediterranean (Marseille).

Choosing French ports as homeports doesn’t necessarily mean offering only short itineraries. On the contrary, there is a wide range of options, from quick mini-cruises to experience the new Renaissance or enjoy a simple weekend getaway to extended voyages that take passengers from France to Northern Europe and Canada on one side, and to the far south of the Mediterranean and even Africa on the other.

The refurbishment work has breathed new life into the old Maasdam, striking a balance between necessary modernizations and the preservation of the original structure, including precious pieces of furniture and the ship’s unique exterior style, characterized by two spacious pools and numerous interior spaces. The chosen name for the ship, Renaissance , has certainly been upheld, giving a “rebirth” to the first vessel of the fleet and allowing it to reengage with new cruisers in a more modern travel style. The onboard atmosphere is very casual, with various dining options and flexible meal times.

Renaissance can be described as a medium-sized ship today, with just over 55,500 tons of tonnage and 629 cabins, accommodating approximately 1,100 passengers served by a crew of 520 people. Nearly 100 cabins are dedicated to solo travelers and are provided at no additional cost. The refitting work has significantly improved all cabins, with deep renovations that encompass everything from carpeting to bathrooms and the inclusion of minibars. 80% of the cabins are exterior, with 140 having private balconies, and there are 29 suites, each with a dedicated concierge lounge.

Considerable attention is given to onboard dining, with a significant budget allocated for this purpose. Quality and variety are the key words, resulting in an extensive buffet restaurant and a constantly changing menu at the main restaurant, in addition to opportunities offered by specialty restaurants.

Renaissance’s interior spaces revolve around a three-deck atrium (Decks 6 to 8) featuring a large glass sculpture at the center of the stairs. This space, known as the “ Le Grand Foyer ,” houses the reception, the excursion office, several boutiques, lounges, and conference rooms. Most other guest spaces are located on Decks 7 and 8. Forward, there’s the elegant and welcoming La Belle Epoque theater with 667 seats where passengers can enjoy different shows every evening.

Renaissance also boasts a spacious casino, completely renovated during the refitting, with various tables and numerous slot machines. The onboard dining includes five restaurants, such as the Grand Restaurant Vatel (the main restaurant), the Table du Chef (offering an exclusive culinary experience for 12 guests), and two specialty restaurants, Louchébèm and Saïgon , which require a modest supplement. Additionally, the ship features a large buffet called Belle-Ile with numerous indoor tables in well-lit and spacious areas, as well as the option to use the beautiful outdoor terrace with a great sea view.

Some interior spaces are particularly elegant, like the Café Bibliothèque Les Explorateurs , where you can browse through numerous libraries and immerse yourself in a relaxing and immersive atmosphere. The Oceans Bar is another elegant space, featuring precious mementos from old French transatlantic liners, reminiscent of the history and beauty of past maritime journeys.

Renaissance’s interior spaces always offer hidden corners and small oases of tranquility, which, especially during leisurely days at sea, are a pleasure to discover and escape to. The aft pool is a real highlight of this class of ships, a genuine scenic platform overlooking the sea, with ample space for sun loungers and tables, making passengers feel truly connected to the ocean.

The ship offers wellness spaces, a gym, a spa with treatment rooms, massages, and a thermal area with a hot tub, hammam, sauna, heated chairs, as well as an indoor relaxation room and an outdoor terrace. Most services, except for treatments, are provided free of charge to all guests.

Between  14 and 9 days   before your arrival date, 90% of the entire tour price  will be charged.

Entry visa to Egypt

To enter Egypt, you must have a valid passport at least 6 months after your date of departure from Egypt.you can also obtain a tourist visa on your arrival in Egypt, at the airport; the visa costs  25 USD per passport (cash payment in euro or dollar) However, in an effort to revitalize tourism in Egypt the following nationalities can purchase a 1-month entry visa on arrival. The Nationalities that benefit from the aforementioned exception are  (Australia, Canda, Croatia, the European Union, Georgia, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Macedonia, South Korea, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, United Kingdom and The U.S.A) . The Process for acquiring these entry visas is extremely simple and only takes a mere couple of minutes through any bank window before proceeding to customs.For other  nationalities, we invite you to check with the Egyptian authorities before your departure

Sleeper-Trains in Egypt 

Egyptian trains are designed and maintained according to standards of quality determined by the Egyptian Railway Authority. The sleeper Train from Cairo to Aswan takes about 14 hours, and from Luxor to Cairo takes about 11 hours, half board, including breakfast and dinner

Danube river cruise ship crashed after it was 'suddenly no longer able to maneuver,' 17 passengers injured

• A cruise ship crashed into a concrete wall along the Danube river in Austria on Friday.
• A police statement said the ship "was suddenly no longer able to maneuver."
• Eleven people were treated at the hospital and another six suffered less serious injuries.

A Bulgarian cruise ship carrying over 140 passengers crashed into a concrete wall along the Danube river in Austria.

The incident occurred late on Friday in the northern Austrian town of Aschach an der Donau, local police said Saturday.

Eleven people were injured and taken to hospital as a result of the crash. Six others suffered less serious injuries that did not require hospital treatment.

The ship had set off from Passau, a German city on the Austrian border. A police statement said that as the ship was leaving a lock chamber further down the river, "the ship was suddenly no longer able to maneuver," and its right bow and left aft crashed into the lock walls.

The second-in-command of the ship, who had been at the helm during the crash, "pressed the emergency switch, whereupon the electronics started up again." He was then able to steer the ship out of the lock.

The ship was later docked at the quay wall and emergency services were notified. The ship was able to continue its journey toward Linz, Austria.

Earlier this week, a container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, collapsing a section of the 1.6-mile-long structure. The bodies of two construction workers were found after the collision, and four more workers are missing and presumed dead.

Citing the container ship's recovered data recorder, officials said the power went out on the Dali for just one minute and three seconds as it approached the bridge, Sky News reported, but that was enough for the collision to become unavoidable.

In 2019, a cruise boat hit and sank a smaller boat near Budapest, Hungary, killing 25 South Korean tourists and two crew members. The captain was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the accident.

The Danube is the second-largest river in Europe, flowing from the Black Forest in Germany south into the Black Sea near Romania and Ukraine.

Renaissance Kicks Off CFC’s 2024 Cruise Season

The Renaissance recently kicked off the 2024 cruise season for Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC).

After being laid up in Marseille for the past few weeks , the vessel is now entering its second year of service for the France-based cruise line.

Initially sailing from Le Havre, the Renaissance will offer a variety of three- to 15-night itineraries to Scandinavia, Western Europe, the British Islands and Iceland.

To start the season, the ship is currently offering a 15-night cruise to Norway. After departing from France, the itinerary includes visits to Alesund, Tromso, Alta, Hammerfest, Bodo, Maloy and Stavanger.

The Northern Europe program is also highlighted by a 14-night cruise to the British Islands in late June.

Also sailing roundtrip from Le Havre, the port-intensive itinerary features visits to popular destinations, as well as less common ports of call, such as Edinburgh, Belfast, Dublin, Scrabster, Holyhead, and the Isles of Sicily.

In early August, the Renaissance repositions to the Mediterranean for a series of cruises departing from Marseille.

Running through December, the schedule includes a wide range of distinct itineraries in the region, including the “Beauties of Italy.”

The 11-night cruise visits Palermo, Messina, Naples, Civitavecchia, Portoferraio, and Livorno. Before returning to Marseille, the itinerary also includes a stop in Ajaccio, Corsica.

Between September and October, the Renaissance will also offer five- to seven-night itineraries in the Aegean Sea and the Greek Islands departing from Heraklion and Chania.

These itineraries feature popular ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, as well as lesser-visited destinations such as Kos and Milos.

Acquired from Seajets in 2022 , the Renaissance was originally built for Holland America Line as the Maasdam.

The 1993-built ship underwent a comprehensive renovation in Northern France before debuting for CFC in mid-2023.

Aiming at the French-speaking markets, the ship was adapted to offer a “French identity,” according to CFC. This includes not only cruises departing from local ports but also customized entertainment and culinary offerings, in addition to French-speaking crew.
