“It Was the Roar of the Crowd”: My Chemical Romance’s Reunion Tour Hits Home in Newark, NJ

My Chemical Romance’s music is inherently cathartic, sonically and emotionally charged, and the New Jersey rock band’s 2022 homecoming shows took that raw passion and pure energy to new heights. Here’s to hoping this Reunion Tour is only the beginning of a long and fruitful second act for MCR.

It was the roar of the crowd that gave me heartache to sing…

I t was a triumphant return, ten-plus years in the making.

My Chemical Romance’s music is inherently cathartic, sonically and emotionally charged, and the New Jersey rock band’s homecoming shows took that raw passion and pure energy to new heights.

Following two breathtaking shows at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on September 10th and 11th, the band victoriously returned to Newark’s Prudential Center on the 20th and 21st for two outstanding performances that were not only inspiring and uplifting, but also as fun for the audience as they were for the band.

For the purposes of this review, we will focus on the September 20th show.

An electric current rippled through the 19,000+ capacity arena as fans new and old shuffled through the stands, many dressed up to reflect characters from past music videos and many more wearing old band tees from the early aughts. Special guests The Homeless Gospel Choir and Thursday warmed the crowd up with their unique brands of punk, but the anticipation for the headliner was undeniably palpable: Since My Chemical Romance’s Reunion Tour announcement in early 2020, these shows had been rescheduled at least twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While concertgoers had technically been counting down ~1,000 days to this moment, the real number was far greater: This would be MCR’s first proper hometown show in over a decade.

Frontman Gerard Way has been donning a new outfit every night of the tour, and tonight’s costume choice – we’re going with “vampire/bat” – was dark and powerful.

It was clear the band felt the longing for this long-overdue homecoming, and their performance was no doubt one of their best yet. They did not shy away from playing the songs that jumpstarted their career in the first half of the set, going so far as to invite fellow New Jerseyan and Thursday frontman Geoff Rickly onto the stage to join in a rip-roaring performance of “ This Is the Best Day Ever ,” taken off 2002’s debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love (also produced by Rickly, whom Way further credited for teaching him how to sing).

But we digress.

The band came out in full force with their new song “ Foundations of Decay ,” whose static-laced entrance music transformed into an over 5 minute wash of sonic suspense. Unapologetically intense, the heavy anthem proved a stunning opener and set the scene for the onslaught to come. After heightened audience arousal from playing their hit “ I’m Not Okay (I Promise) ” right off the bat, Gerard Way couldn’t help but don a genuine, earnest smile.

Witnessing that brief, but meaningful moment of vulnerability was equal parts poignant and humbling from the crowd: The band of best friends Gerard Way, Mikey Way, Frank Iero, and Ray Toro (joined by Jarrod Alexander on percussion and Jamie Muhoberac on keyboards) are clearly loving every minute of their long-awaited reunion, and seeing an artist sincerely love the music they’re playing truly enhances what is already a euphoric audience experience.

The set continued with a series of fan favorites from Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge , with MCR playing “ Give ‘Em Hell, Kid ,” “ Cemetery Drive ,” “ The Ghost of You ,” the feverish “ Thank You for the Venom ,” and “ I Never Told You What I Do For a Living ” – a song that hasn’t been played since 2008 – throughout the evening.

My Chemical Romance have been changing their setlist up on a nightly basis such that no two shows are ever the same, but the biggest hits are staples of every evening and never fail to make the crowd roar. These include the explosive anthem “ Helena ,” the spiritually cleansing “ Famous Last Words ,” the soul-stirring rallying cry “ Welcome to the Black Parade ,” the rebellious blues rocker “ Teenagers ,” the supercharged singalong “ Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na) ,” and the impassioned “ Mama ” – the latter of which bathes audiences in a deep red glow every evening as Way brings a sea of strangers together to sing, “ Mama, we all go to hell. “

It didn’t stop there: Hearing “ Demolition Lovers ” live for the first time in almost two decades sent fans on a nostalgic spiral for MCR’s encore, which they finished on a high not with the 2010 Danger Days hit, “ The Kids From Yesterday .” “ Remember, this could be the last of all the rides we take, so hold on tight and don’t look back ,” Gerard Way sang triumphant. “ We don’t care about the message or the rules they make; I’ll find you when the sun goes black .” It was a perfect ending for a band playing where they were born and raised.

Today today we are the kids from yesterday, today here we are and we won’t stop breathing yell it out, ’til your heart stops beating we are the kids from yesterday, today.

My Chemical Romance’s music was so important to fans who grew up with them: They allowed and acknowledged the misfits and the outsiders, giving them a voice and a platform to feel at home.

MCR’s music is remains important and relevant to many in this world of constant fear and judgment. The nostalgia of their return is its own reckoning in a return to normalcy, giving people who really need something to believe in now another shot at hope. “ The World Is Ugly ,” taken from 2013’s Conventional Weapons singles spree, hits home for fans who can only help but relate in a time strained by a pandemic, war, and constant political unrest:

These are the eyes and the lies of the taken These are their hearts but their hearts don’t beat like ours They burn ’cause they are all afraid For every one of us, there’s an army of them But you’ll never fight alone ‘Cause I wanted you to know That the world is ugly, b ut you’re beautiful to me Well are you thinking of me now (now)?

These are the nights and the lights that we fade in these are the words but the words aren’t coming out they burn ’cause they are hard to say for every failing sun, there’s a morning after though i’m empty when you go i just wanted you to know that the world is ugly, but you’re beautiful to me.

My Chemical Romance was there for a generation of teenagers and young adults who needed them most, and Gerard Way swooped in as a caped superhero to revive our inner angst and drive.

It was surreal seeing them perform like nothing had changed; it was a brief moment in time of pure joy for fans everywhere. The power they have in bringing together people from all ages and walks of life is incredible, and My Chemical Romance sound as good, if not better than they did over a decade ago. Here’s to hoping 2022 is only the beginning of a long and fruitful second act for MCR.

My Chemical Romance’s Reunion Tour hits the West Coast this October. The band will play Mexico City’s Corona Capital Festival on November 18th, and they recently announced a string of tour dates in Australia and New Zealand set for March 2023.

My Chemical Romance deliver a long-awaited rock sermon in Nashville

• My Chemical Romance returned to Nashville on the third night of an anticipated U.S. reunion tour.
• The show brought together fans young and old who waited nearly a decade for the band to tour again.
• A 90-minute set spanned much of MCR's four-album career, from "I'm Not OK" to "Na Na Na."

What if you didn't get a chance to see your favorite band until nearly 10 years after the group disbanded? 

How often would songs from worn-out albums rattle living room walls or shake car windows as you daydreamed of shouting along to each over-the-top chorus in a room with like-minded listeners? 

For a generation of My Chemical Romance fans, that dream became a high-flying rock 'n' roll reality Tuesday night in Nashville. 

The New Jersey-born outfit returned to Music City this week for a one-night show at Bridgestone Arena, the third North American stop in a wildly anticipated globetrotting reunion tour. The tour — which kicked off last weekend in Oklahoma City after being twice delayed by COVID-19 — marks the first proper run of U.S. shows for the band since pulling the plug on a decade-plus of output in 2013. 

Plenty of elder emo-rock fans dusted off skinny jeans and stretched out vintage Warped Tour t-shirts for the reunion, of course. But venue rows easily filled with as many teenagers— often dressed in black-and-red tops or "Black Parade" costumes linked to band iconology — as nostalgia-craved adults hungry to belt each word of cornerstone hit "I'm Not OK."  

Young, old or in-between, fans received an arena-rock sermon that only My Chemical Romance could deliver — a no-frills dive into the chaotic, theatrical, uncanny and, yes, emotional catalog that shapeshifts from basement punk roots ("Our Lady Of Sorrows") to post-9/11 goth-rock angst ("I'm Not OK"), ambitious concept art ("Welcome To The Black Parade") and high-wired power-pop ("Na Na Na").

"I do believe some of you have been waiting a very long time for this show," bandleader Gerard Way, dressed in a cheerleading uniform, said early in the set. "We have, too. Thank you so much for waiting around."

And in 2022, My Chemical Romance — long-adored by listeners but often dismissed by critics and award show voters — headlining one of the year's premier arena tours could be tied to a perfect storm of major label emo-rock revival , renewed interest in mid-2000s pop-punk (thanks to artists such as Olivia Rodrigo) and a built-up demand to hear the band play again.  

But a simpler answer may be the better one: These songs  hold up . 

"Boy Division" hits like a welcomed gut-punch. "Teenagers" remains an all-time riffy-rock singalong. "Helena" stands as tear-jerking "so long (and good night)" to a lost loved one. "Famous Last Words"? "Mama"? "Welcome To The Black Parade"? Each earn a place among time-tested concept-rock canon. 

And, as Gerard Way introduced it Tuesday night, "I'm Not OK" may be "the grrrreatest summer jam" of its era (depending on what you think of "Mr. Brightside," of course). 

The six-piece band delivered each aforementioned song without the pomp typically reserved in an arena show. Pyrotechnics, floor-to-ceiling screens or flashy costumes didn't mask the masses from joining in when a chorus kicked in. 

And while a reconnection between My Chemical Romance and its audience headlined the night, it wasn't the only reunion inside Bridgestone Arena. Five songs into the 90-minute set, Way noted Tuesday night was a homecoming show for his younger brother and bassist Mikey Way, an adopted Nashville musician. 

On stage, guitarists Frank Iero and Ray Toro sported matching "Mikey (expletive) Way" t-shirts in a likely nod to the player's hometown gig. 

Part of a three-song encore, the band closed its Nashville return with "The Kids From Yesterday," a slow-burning power ballad where Way croons that "this could be the last of all the rides we take, so hold on tight and don't look back." 

Now, here's to hoping the kids from yesterday — and today — don't wait another decade for the next show.

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way surprised and delighted fans at a recent show by performing his band's set in a cheerleader's outfit.

The concert, held in Nashville, Tennessee on August 23, saw the vocalist sport a green and white dress with the letter 'W' emblazoned on the front, presumably standing for his surname Way.

On their ongoing North American tour, which kicked off on August 20, Way and co. have been adding in further surprises with the addition of live rarities and deep cuts, such as Bury Me In Black , which was performed for the first time in 19 years at the tour's opening show. The emo kingpins then went on to play This Is The Best Day Ever for the first time since 2005.

My Chemical Romance commenced their reunion run this year with a performance at the Eden Project in Cornwall, before heading off across the rest of the UK and continuing on to Europe.

The band will be hitting New Zealand and Australia in 2023 following the end of their US tour this October.

Gerard Way wears blood-splattered white suit at first MCR Milton Keynes show

So badass! For the first of their three-night stint at the MK Stadium, My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way rather dramatically switched up his wardrobe…

Following on from their two-night stop at the Eden Project earlier this week, My Chemical Romance hit Milton Keynes for the first stadium show of their massive comeback tour.

And not only was the size of the venue much different (the MK Stadium is around 35,000-capacity, while the Eden Project is a more intimate – for MCR, anyway – 6,500), but frontman Gerard Way had clearly stocked up on a new wardrobe en route, much to the delight of the old-school My Chem contingent.

While his bandmates were in their standard stage get-up, the vocalist walked out in a white suit covered in fake blood, prompting fans to also wonder if this could be tied into a new era of the band following the release of The Foundations Of Decay …

Gerard Way Rocks Cheerleading Outfit During My Chemical Romance Show in Nashville: Watch

The latest stop on the band's grand comeback tour

To the delight of My Chemical Romance fans in Nashville, Gerard Way switched up from the emo uniform of skinny jeans and a t-shirt to a cheerleading outfit during the band’s concert at Bridgestone Arena on Tuesday, August 23rd. The show marked the third stop on the North American leg of MCR’s ongoing reunion tour . (Grab tickets to remaining dates here .)

Way has shared his perspective on gender identity in the past, so his sartorial choice hardly caught longtime followers of MCR off-guard. “I have always identified a fair amount with the female gender, and began at a certain point in MCR to express this through my look and performance style,” Way said during a 2014 Reddit AMA . “So it’s no surprise that all of my inspirations and style influences were pushing gender boundaries. [Freddie] Mercury, Bowie, Iggy, early glam, T-Rex. Masculinity to me has always made me feel like it wasn’t right for me.”

He also tweeted about switching perspectives “frequently” in lyrics the following year, and said that the newer songs he was writing “even switch gender.” So, it was nice to see the bandleader in his comfort zone while MCR tore through their comeback song “The Foundations of Decay” and reached into their deep catalog with hits like “Welcome to the Black Parade,” “Helena,” and “I’m Not Okay (I Promise).”

Gerard Way Rocks Cheerleading Uniform at My Chemical Romance Show

Gerard Way in uniform? Indeed, the cheery  My Chemical Romance lead singer appeared onstage in a cheerleading outfit in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday (Aug. 23).

So let's hear three cheers for the bandleader! Because he certainly showed his team spirit by performing with the emo-rock kingpins in a green and white one-piece cheerleading uniform dress at Music City's Bridgestone Arena, as fan-captured video shows. The getup even had an appliqué "W" for Way.

Listeners on Twitter are loving it. "wait he looks so good," one replied to the MCR Updates fan account, which shared clips of Way's sporty display. "I could fight god and win after seeing this," another user remarked . Several more affirmative comments followed.

Way has been mixing up his concert attire as My Chemical Romance take their show on the road this year. Months back, he wore a bloodstained suit at a stadium show. "I feel so powerful," the stylish singer said during that captivating performance .

In May, My Chemical Romance released the single "The Foundations of Decay," their first new music in eight years. They  reunited three years ago  and played their first comeback show in December 2019. They're touring  across North America this summer and fall.

To the delight of My Chemical Romance fans in Nashville, Gerard Way switched up from the emo uniform of skinny jeans and a t-shirt to a cheerleading outfit during the band’s concert at Bridgestone Arena on Tuesday, August 23rd. The show marked the third stop on the North American leg of MCR’s ongoing reunion tour . (Grab tickets to remaining dates here .)

Way has shared his perspective on gender identity in the past, so his sartorial choice hardly caught longtime followers of MCR off-guard. “I have always identified a fair amount with the female gender, and began at a certain point in MCR to express this through my look and performance style,” Way said during a 2014 Reddit AMA . “So it’s no surprise that all of my inspirations and style influences were pushing gender boundaries. [Freddie] Mercury, Bowie, Iggy, early glam, T-Rex. Masculinity to me has always made me feel like it wasn’t right for me.”

He also tweeted about switching perspectives “frequently” in lyrics the following year, and said that the newer songs he was writing “even switch gender.” So, it was nice to see the bandleader in his comfort zone while MCR tore through their comeback song “The Foundations of Decay” and reached into their deep catalog with hits like “Welcome to the Black Parade,” “Helena,” and “I’m Not Okay (I Promise).”
