Valspar Championship payout distribution 2024: Prize money, purse

How much prize money is on the line at the 2024 Valspar Championship?

By Cody Williams | Mar 24, 2024

Valspar Championship - Round Three

The Valspar Championship purse certainly isn't the only reason that some of the best on the PGA Tour along with a lot of golfers aiming to make a big name for themselves teed it up at the always-difficult Copperhead Course at Innisbrook this week. In fact, some might say that the Valspar payout is a secondary thing.

In the golfing world, this is the tune-up time for major championship season, which is now less than a month away. But while guys like Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth and Tony Finau were ready to use the Valspar Championship to try and get into major form, they all either missed the cut or fell well out of the pack. That allowed 54-hole leader Keith Mitchell, still-looking-for-his-first win Cameron Young, Mackenzie Hughes and many others to try and make a name for themselves coming into Sunday at the Copperhead Course.

But even if the prize money is secondary, it's still an important part of the event for PGA Tour players. So what does the 2024 Valspar Championship purse and payout distribution look like? We have it all broken down for you this week.

Valspar Championship purse 2024: Winner's prize money, total purse

The winner of the 2024 Valspar Championship will take home a $1.512 million payout in prize money. That breaks down to a full 18% of the $8.4 million purse that's on the line this week at Innsibrook and the Copperhead Course, which is a nice payout for a non-signature event. However, given that Scottie Scheffler's back-to-back wins at the API and THE PLAYERS netted the World No. 1 in golf $8.5 million, more than the purse at the Valspar, it's definitely all relative.

Valspar payout distribution by finishing position in 2024

Here's a full breakdown of the Valspar Championship payout with how much prize money each finishing position will take home this week from the end of the Florida Swing.

The purses for events like the Valspar Championship and then the forthcoming Houston Open and Valero Texas Open clearly pale in comparison to the likes of THE PLAYERS, other signature events, and of course the major championships. However, it's still a good payday for guys who show up at the Copperhead Course and play well.

Perhaps more importantly, though, these three events starting with the Valspar Championship are about getting into the right form for The Masters in just three weeks. That's true for the two tournaments in Texas as well, as players are not only trying to earn their way into the field with a win or by moving up in the Official World Golf Rankings, but also find the form to potentially don the green jacket.

So whatever Valspar Championship payout comes with accomplishing that is well worth it for these players.

Players Championship prize money payout: Here's how much money each golfer earned at TPC Sawgrass

Money, money, money. For better or worse, it’s the underlying subplot regarding the uncertain future of men’s professional golf. And if you pay attention to social media, for worse seems to be far outweighing for better these days. If there is a tipping point regarding how much golf fans care about how much tour pros are making in tournaments, it feels like that point has likely passed.

That said, you can’t ignore that this week at the 50th anniversary of the Players Championship, the 144 golfers in the field were playing for A LOT of money. It’s just a fact; the overall purse up for grabs at TPC Sawgrass was $25 million, the most of any event on the PGA Tour. And the prize money payout for the winner, Scottie Scheffler, was also a record amount, with $4.5 million going to the last man standing. Scheffler shot a final-round 64 to end at 20 under par and win in back-to-back weeks—following his Arnold Palmer Invitational win last Sunday—and for the first time in tournament history, back-to-back years, following his 2023 Players title. Brian Harman, Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark tied for second a shot back. Clark's birdie attempt on the 72nd hole was halfway in the hole, but rimmed out in dramatic fashion.

The prize money payout has grown substantially in a short period of time. As we have noted previously , when Rory McIlroy won the Players just five years ago, he claimed a then-record $2.25 million for his victory. But now a solo fifth place finish this week earns you $1.025 million.

Indulge us for our annual review of just how much the prize money has risen—again for better or worse—at this championship over the years. It's seems only appropriate to revisit given the golden anniversary being celebrated this year.

Year: Total Purse/First place 1974: $250,000/Jack Nicklaus, $50,000 1982: $500,000/Jerry Pate, $90,000 1987: $1 million/Sandy Lyle, $180,000 1993: $2.5 million/Nick Price, $450,000 2000: $6 million/Hal Sutton, $1.08 million 2007: $9 million/Phil Mickelson, $1.62 million 2014: $10 million/Martin Kaymer, $1.8 million 2018: $11 million/Webb Simpson, $1.89 million 2019: $12.5 million/Rory McIlroy, $2.25 million 2021: $15 million/Justin Thomas, $2.7 million 2022: $20 million/Cameron Smith, $3.6 million 2023: $25 million/Scottie Scheffler, $4.5 million

With the win, Scheffler becomes the first golfer ever to repeat as the winner of the Players Championship. In 50 years of the event that featured winners like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Fred Couples, it wasn't until Scheffler's victory on Sunday that the Players Championship saw back-to-back wins.

"Pretty special," he said after the win, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach . "That's something you don't get the opportunity to do very often. It's tough enough to win one Players."

The win also made Scheffler one of five players to win at Bay Hill and TPC Sawgrass in the same season. He is just the third player to win at those courses in consecutive weeks, joining Tiger Woods (2001) and Tom Kite (1989).

Scheffler now has his second victory on the tour this season and will look to follow it up with a big performance at the Valspar Championship next week.

Prize money payouts for each PGA Tour player at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open

It pays to play well on the PGA Tour, especially at designated events. Just ask this week’s winner, Scottie Scheffler .

The 26-year-old earned his fifth PGA Tour win Sunday with his title defense at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open, the first full-field designated event of the season. Scheffler finished at 19 under to take home the top prize of $3.6 million and leapfrog Phil Mickelson for the most money won at the Phoenix Open .

Nick Taylor’s quest for a third win on Tour came up short, but the Canadian will leave TPC Scottsdale with $2.18 million, nearly $700,000 more than what Scheffler pocketed for winning the Phoenix Open a year ago.

Desert fan-favorite and former Arizona State star Jon Rahm finished third and earned $1.38 million.

Check out how much money each PGA Tour player earned this week at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale.

Tournament date: January 4-7

Scottie scheffler raises the bar again on list of most money earned in single season on pga tour, share this article.

pga tour win prize money

There can be a lot of money won playing professional tournament golf, especially on the PGA Tour and especially in the last two decades. And especially in the last two seasons.

Prize money has exploded on the circuit thanks to the signature events and the majors boosting their purses.

Because of the influx of cash, four of the top five single-seasons for money earned happened during the 2022-23 season.

Note: This list does not count bonus money nor does it account for money earned on the DP World Tour.

10 Tiger Woods, 2005

2005 Masters

$10,628,024

In addition to winning more than $10 million and his fourth green jacket, Tiger Woods delivered the most memorable shot of his career and perhaps in all of 21st-century golf Sunday at Augusta. His chilling chip on 16 eventually morphed into a Nike commercial. Overall, Woods won six times on the PGA Tour in 2005.

9 Wyndham Clark, 2022-23

2023 Genesis Scottish Open

$10,757,490

Clark won the U.S. Open for his first major championship. It was his second win of his breakout season. Clark made 24 of 27 cuts, while posting seven top-10 finishes. He’s made two-thirds of his career earnings total of $15 million this season.

8 Tiger Woods, 2006-07

2007 BMW Championship

$10,867,052

Riding the momentum and a (sort-of) winning streak from 2006, Tiger Woods continued to dominate on the PGA Tour during the first of his many comebacks. Woods won the Buick Invitational for the seventh time – and extended his PGA Tour-events-started winning streak to seven. The streak ended in February when Woods lost in the Round of 16 at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Woods ended the year by claiming the inaugural FedEx Cup, winning the final two events of the playoffs. The BMW Championship was his 60th career PGA Tour victory. He dominated in the Tour Championship, winning by eight shots with a 23-under 257 (64-63-64-66). That remains the lowest 72-hole score of his career.

7 Vijay Singh, 2004

2004 PGA Championship

Vijay Singh celebrates during the greenside ceremony after winning the 86th PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin, on Sunday, Aug.15, 2004. (Photo: Associated Press)

$10,905,166

At age 41, Vijay Singh was as good as ever on the PGA Tour in 2004, winning the  PGA Championship at Whistling Straits and eight other Tour events. His overall finishes were equally impressive: he made 28-of-29 cuts, posted 18 top-10s and 24 top-25s. He also won PGA Tour Player of the Year honors.

6 Jordan Spieth, 2014-15

2015 U.S. Open

Jordan Spieth poses for a photo with the trophy after winning the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington. (Photo: John David Mercer/USA TODAY Sports)

$12,030,465

At the age of 22, Jordan Spieth was the reigning U.S. Open and Masters champion when he won the FedEx Cup and its $10 million bonus. He became the youngest Tour Player of the Year since Tiger Woods in 1997. In addition to those two majors won during the 2014-15 season, Spieth also captured the Valspar in March, the John Deere Classic in July and the Tour Championship to complete a memorable season on multiple fronts.

5 Rory McIlroy, 2022-23

2023 Genesis Scottish Open

$13,921,008

Rory McIlroy has two wins this season and of the 17 events he played, he made the weekend at 15 of them. Twelve times he finished in the top 10, twice he was a runner-up.

4 Scottie Scheffler, 2021-22

2022 Masters

$14,046,910

After entering the 2022 calendar year without a PGA Tour win, the 25-year-old Texan has vaulted into this list thanks to four victories in six starts, each win more impressive than the first. Scheffler finally broke through to victory lane in February at the WM Phoenix Open. He followed that up with a win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Then came his first WGC win at the Dell Technologies Match Play. Now he’s a major champ, having won at Augusta National Golf Club to earn the green jacket. Over Memorial Day weekend, Scheffler almost won again, coming up short in a playoff against Sam Burns in the Charles Schwab Challenge. Still, he took home $915,600 for his work over the 73 holes. He took over the top spot with a T-2 at the U.S. Open, where he earned $1,557,687.

3 Viktor Hovland, 2022-23

2023 Genesis Scottish Open

Viktor Hovland looks on from the eighth green during a practice round ahead of the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club. (Photo: Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)

$14,112,235

Viktor Hovland won twice this season: the Memorial, a designated event, and the BMW Championship, a playoff event. Both wins were good for $3.6 million. He made the cut in all 22 tournaments he entered and finished in the top 10 eight times. If Hovland were the top money winner this season, he’d have broken Scottie Scheffler’s single-season mark set a year ago, but in the age of signature events, Hovland’s whopping total ranks just third this season (and third best ever).

2 Jon Rahm, 2022-23

2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship

Jon Rahm prepares to tee off on the 10th hole for the first round of the 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis. (Photo: Memphis Commercial/Appeal)

$16,522,608

Jon Rahm led the PGA Tour this season with four wins, including the Masters, his second career major, which was good for $3.24 million. He won $2.7 million at the Sentry, $1.44 million at the American Express and $3.6 million at the Genesis Invitatonal. Toss in 10 top 10s and that’s a lot of jack for one season. He’s also now gone over $50 million in career earnings.

1 Scottie Scheffler, 2022-23

2023 Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial

$21,014,342

Scottie Scheffler, for the second year in a row, has set the new bar for most money earned in a single season . He made 22 of 22 cuts and posted 16 top 10s and has two wins, banking $3.6 million at the WM Phoenix Open and $4.5 million at the Players Championship, the richest prize on the PGA Tour.

Crazy to think he beat last year’s mark by about $7 million. He’s made $35 million in just the last two seasons and $42.5 million for his career.

Money game: How much do Tour winners actually keep from each check?

For every professional golfer, taxes are par for the course, but many elite players also have numerous other payouts to make from each check.

Getty Images

Back in late April, a week after last year’s taxes were due to Uncle Sam, Talor Gooch won a LIV Golf event in Adelaide, Australia. His post-victory comments on a golf podcast made as much news as the victory itself.

“I am by no means complaining,” Gooch said, merely noting that “it sucked that 47 and a half percent” of his $4 million top prize was withheld for Australian taxes, so “once you cut it all up, let’s just say that it’s a lot less than four.” It was, the Midwest City, Okla., native said, “a little bit disheartening.”

Whether one saw this as the second coming of Marie Antoinette’s infamous “Let them eat cake” or an all-too-relatable lament of workers everywhere, it brought to the fore a question every golf fan has had watching an oversize check being hoisted aloft: How much does the winner actually take home? Trophies and record books are great, but what’s the bottom line?

Gooch will have known from his prior stint on the PGA Tour, where he won the 2021 RSM Classic, that taxes aren’t just the price we pay for a civilized society (per Oliver Wendall Holmes Jr.). They’re par for the course on any circuit for winners and for the vanquished (except for the missed-cutters who make bubkes for the week… something Gooch needn’t worry about anymore on the no-cut LIV — nor competitors in eight designated no-cut, limited-field, “elevated” PGA Tour events, too, starting in 2024).

But, when it comes to taxes, what is par for the course?

Well, mate, each foreign country has its own rules; there can be foreign withholding in Mexico (7 percent), Canada (15 percent), and the UK (18 to 20 percent) too. If the tournament is on American soil, it likewise depends on where the win occurs.

A view of Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Money game: A timeline of Pebble Beach’s multimillion-dollar wheeling and dealing

“California is the toughest,” says one veteran golf agent who requested anonymity. “It withholds 7 percent of the check right off the bat.”

Other places that typically withhold include Louisiana, Massachusetts, North Carolina and South Carolina, and Ohio’s Dublin/Columbus withholds city taxes for The Memorial tournament. While other states, such as Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, New York and Texas, don’t withhold, that doesn’t mean there is no tax filing requirement later.

Regardless of the host setting, the PGA Tour notes, it is “required to adhere to all local, state, federal and foreign laws and regulations set forth by government agencies and their related tax authorities when income is paid to professionals. PGA Tour withholds taxes and reports on all income, where required by law.”

Golfers and their accountants and advisers know full well that they, too, must mark down the right numbers on the scorecard. Joe Pros wishing to decrease their tax burden do have an option that should also be familiar to Joe Blows, namely, put some of that pretax income into a retirement plan. According to the PGA Tour, its members, as well as those on PGA Tour Champions and the Korn Ferry Tour, have the option to participate in an elective retirement plan in which they can defer prize money into a retirement account, with deferrals limited by annual IRS limits.

“We recommend 100 percent of our clients max out that elective plan,” says Joe McLean, senior managing director for MAI Capital Management, which counts three-time PGA Tour winner Cameron Champ among its clients. “That’s ‘old person money,’ but it’s important to do that as early as you possibly can to use the time value of money. Check the box, make sure you’re paying yourself first and save on taxes too.”

As such, McLean’s firm always immediately puts sufficient prize money into a tax savings account to earn interest on it until those taxes are due.

“There’s very little guaranteed money in golf, and the income will spike up and down quite substantially,” he says. “If you don’t stay hyper-organized in terms of the money going in and out of your life, you can find yourself not having saved enough money to pay your taxes.”

chart

The PGA Tour also sponsors nonelective retirement plans — the FedExCup Bonus Plan, Cuts Plan ($4,500 for each of the first 15 cuts made in a season, twice that for each additional cut) and PGA Tour Champions Plan. Contributions to these are in addition to any prize money earned and made after the season concludes. Speaking of which, win the FedExCup’s $18 million top prize in 2023 and $17 million is in cash and $1 million goes to the player’s FECBP (see chart above).

Withholdings notwithstanding, our tournament champion is still looking at a healthy lump sum. While there’s something appealingly primal about those big poker tournaments where organizers dump the millions at stake onto the table before the last two competitors play Heads-up, professional golf is a more buttoned-up affair. The Tour pays its players via several common payment types, including direct deposit, wire transfer and check, underscoring that it “makes every effort to minimize paper waste and encourages electronic payment to all professionals.” (Waste management: It’s not just for the Phoenix Open.)

Golfers and their accountants know full well that they, too, must mark down the right numbers on the scorecard.

To those pros, cleanliness is no doubt a distant runner-up to timeliness when it comes to getting their dough. The PGA Tour pays professionals for all income — official, unofficial or secondary event money — net of any withholdings as required by law and retirement contributions if elected “as soon as commercially feasible.” Typically, that’s by close of business the Tuesday after a Sunday finish.

“Look in your account on Wednesday and it’s there, like clockwork, just like your GOLF magazine paycheck,” says the agent, kind enough not to add, “only with more zeros.”

Taxes and retirement plans are far from the only takeaways from the take-home side of the winner’s ledger. For a win, it’s industry standard for 10 percent of the top prize to go to the bagman. That’s above and beyond the caddie’s weekly base fee, which ranges from $1,000 to $2,500 or so, and a step up from the 8 percent bonus for a top-10 finish and 6 percent on everything else in the money.

Nor does victory mean a week off from the player’s normal expenses, just a greater ability to pay them. To invert the old saying, failure may be an orphan, but success has a thousand fathers (John F. Kennedy, post–Bay of Pigs fiasco, via the historian Tacitus). Swing, short-game, mental and data coaches still need to be paid. And they might not only expect a little something extra, you know, for the successful effort, but be contractually obligated in that regard — many now work on a performance-based percentage rather than a weekly retainer. Then there are physical trainers, massage therapists, personal chefs and such to keep a player healthy.

“Professional service fees might be as much as 8 to 13 percent of a player’s earnings in a normal week,” notes McLean. (He sometimes recommends supplemental disability insurance beyond the Tour’s $10,000 a month plan, because an injured player’s bills keep coming regardless.) Not all Tour players have all these workers in their retinue, but most have at least some, sometimes, and they can each run $2,000 to $5,000 a week.

So, in sum: To the winner go the spoils (William L. Marcy, U.S. politician) …  and, yes, the taxes and other bills too. Still, don’t be disheartened, champ. It’s safe to say that going the deepest into red numbers for the week on the course leaves your bank account well into the black.
