Gerlitzen-Rundfahrt mit Kanzelbahn

Logo Gerlitzen-Rundfahrt mit Kanzelbahn

mtb tour gerlitzen

mtb tour gerlitzen

Float comfortably and carefree up to the Gerlitzen Alp with the cable car and enjoy a leisurely bike ride back to Lake Ossiach.

Pleasure gondola ride from the kanzelhöhe to the ossiacher see, duration: 2h .

This scenic bike tour with cable car ascent (incl. bike transport) starts at the foot of the Gerlitzen in Annenheim. After buying the ticket for the first section plus bike transport, you can float relaxedly with the gondola of the Gerlitzen Bergbahnen up the approximately 950 promising altitude meters to the Kanzelhöhe.

When you get off, keep to the left and immediately reach the asphalt road that leads to the former Kanzelhöhe mountain station. However, after reaching the asphalt road, you turn right and follow the road to the junction where you meet the toll road.

From here the descent towards meetings begins without any junctions. In Treffen, the descent ends directly on the Millstätter Bundesstraße (B98), where you turn off onto the R2b cycle path back towards Ossiacher See. The cycle path initially leads through meetings and later through Neudorf, where you cross Ossiacher Strasse at Billa and head in the direction of the underpass. Before the underpass, turn right and follow the cycle path in the direction of the Ossiacher See outflow. Shortly before the bridge, head north again along St. Andräer Straße. The St. Andräer Straße is crossed again at the campsite. After a few minutes you reach the starting point of the tour on the shore of Lake Ossiach

Pleasure gondola ride from the Gerlitzen summit to Lake Ossiach

Duration: 3h 15min.

This scenic bike tour with cable car ascent (incl. bike transport) starts at the foot of the Gerlitzen in Annenheim. After buying the ticket for the two sections plus bike transport, you can float relaxedly with the gondola and a chairlift of the Gerlitzen Bergbahnen the approximately 1410 promising altitude meters to the summit of the Gerlitzen (1911 m) and experience a breathtaking panorama.

When you get off, keep to the left and follow the gravel road to the Berggasthof Pacheiner. Right behind the hotel, the descent begins via the Gerlitzen summit road via the Stifterboden to Arriach without any significant junctions. So you always stay on the toll road and at its end you reach the L46 Teuchern Landesstraße, which you follow down again to the Millstätter Bundestraße (B98). Here you branch off to the left in the direction of the inner wasteland.

From here you can use the R2b cycle path back towards Ossiacher See. The cycle path leads through Treffen, later through Neudorf, where you cross Ossiacher Straße at Billa and head in the direction of the underpass. Before the underpass, turn right and follow the cycle path in the direction of the Ossiacher See outflow. Shortly before the bridge, head north again along St. Andräer Straße. The St. Andräer Straße is crossed again at the campsite. After a few minutes you reach the starting point of the tour on the banks of the Ossiach

Bike transport:

The weight of the bicycles for transport may not exceed 25 kg. The bikes are attached to a bracket on the outside of the gondola, so the maximum weight cannot be exceeded. Please check the weight before departure. With e-bikes, the battery can be transported separately in order to stay below 25 kg.

mtb tour gerlitzen

Attention: All bikers are asked to use only the officially approved roads, in this case the Gerlitzen toll road to Treffen and the Gerlitzen summit road to Arriach for the descent! According to the right of way, the mountain biker is not considered to be a person looking for relaxation, since he rides on paths and is therefore excluded from the freedom of paths (affects hiking paths but also forest roads). We ask for controlled speed on departure and consideration for other road users.

Gerlitzen Alpe mountain experience

Here carinthia lies at your feet.

Action or relaxation? On Gerlitzen Alpe you will find not only a hiking, paragliding and leisure paradise, but also the most beautiful panorama in the region.

Mountains, panorama, magical light. Those who stand up here will see Carinthia with other eyes, because Gerlitzen alpe has been more than richly blessed and as a popular trip mountain offers a wonderful mix of everything we like: grandiose circuits, powerful peak conquering, rustic mountain chalets, interesting Nordic walking trails, leisurely mountain bike tours, exhilarating descents with the mountain cart track (Pistenflitzer) and much more besides. Endless distant views. Gerlitzen Alpe rises directly by the north shore of Ossiacher See. The panoramic Kanzelbahn cable car also runs from there, as well as the Gerlitzen Gipfelbahn to the peak at around 2000 metres above sea level. can you already see it? Below you stretches the most beautiful panorama in Carinthia. Almost the whole regional world of lakes lies at your feet, offering endless "distant viewing". One could sing a Carinthian song about this breathtaking view. Best thermal lift. Would you like to experience the Carinthian mountains and lakes landscape from a birds'-eye perspective? Perfect! Gerlitzen Alpe is considered the most beautiful flying mountain in Austria. The starting area is right next to the peak station of the Gerlitzen Gipfelbahn. Interesting also for non-flyers: watching the paragliders, hang-gliders and model plane flyers. IMPORTANT ADVICE FOR SAFE HIKING In the Gerlitzen Alpe - Ossiacher See cycling and hiking guide, recommended tours are suggested, whose description by no means replaces thorough preparation or use of a suitable hiking map. In the following we provide you with some essential considerations and important advice for safe hiking. BEFORE THE HIKE • Adjust your plans according to your and your companions' abilities (walking time, altitude, difficulty, orientation, fitness, family friendliness). • Inform yourself about the starting and finishing point, course, path numbers and particularities of the tour with a hiking map (scale 1: 25.000). Can you read a map if necessary? • Get a current weather report the day before and before departing. Also ask the locals, as they can judge the regional weather better. Postpone your plans if the weather conditions are uncertain or extreme. • Only embark on your hike with suitable equipment (rucksack, outdoor clothing, suitable footwear with a profiled sole, sun, rain and cold protection, orientation material such as a map, compass, GPS, mobile phone, plasters and bandages etc.) • Take enough refreshments. Drink plenty, but no alcohol. • Leave information at your accommodation about where you are going and when you plan to return. DURING THE HIKE • Starten your hike at a leisurely pace, take less fit companions into consideration. • During your breaks, check your location on your hiking map and set your next specific route target. • Never leave the waymarked trails and do not regard forest paths and tracks as public hiking trails. • Protect the flora and fauna! Take rubbish with you and never leave more than your footsteps. • Keep your distance from cows and their calves! Do not feed, disturb or stroke game and pasture animals! • Keep dogs on the leash! Avoid pastures and suckler cows. In case of danger due to cattle, let go of the leash and bring yourself into safety! • Please note the special prohibitions and instructions in the nature reserve areas. • Pay strict attention in rubble and when crossing slopes to not kicking loose any stones! • Also pay attention to indications of bad weather and in case of doubt break off the tour IMMEDIATELY. • In case of accidents, keep calm and inform the mountain rescue through other hikers, mobile phone etc. • Euro emergency number: 112, mountain rescue: 140 AFTER THE HIKE • Report your return at the accommodation. • Help to improve the quality! Inform your host or the local tourism office about deficiencies (markings, signs, obstructions, dangerous areas etc.) on the tour.

Vancouver, Coast & Mountains

mtb tour gerlitzen

Arguably the Most Photographed Biking Zone on the Planet

This region is where BC mountain biking was born and where it thrives today. World-class bike communities—from the North Shore to Pemberton , the Fraser Valley , and over to the Sunshine Coast —make this region a true hot spot of biking culture, trail building progression, and unmatched terrain.

Vancouver's North Shore known for its technical terrain, hand-built wooden features, tight switchbacks, and rooty and rocky downhill that is also begnning to sproat flowy all-mountain and cross-country trails. Variety is Fraser Valley’s forte where riders can choose from six main trail networks. Long descents and manageable climbs are the pinnacles of Squamish riding where loamy dirt intersects with granite features as a natural stage for downhillers and trail riders alike. Manicured trails and features are designed for every level of rider at the Whistler Bike Park and riding in the Whistler Valley claims endless kilometres of singletrack and enduro riding. In Pemberton, a vast trail network has an array of amazing well-maintained singletrack with steep, loose, and long descents. While the lower Sunshine Coast has a wide range of fun and flowy trails for any style or level of rider and Powell River’s extensive trail network is marked by loamy soil and skinny singletrack resides in the midst of the in rainforest of the Coast Mountains.

Spots to Ride

Neverending Coast Mountain riding.

Fraser Valley

Fraser Valley

Sculpted over millennia, by glaciers and rivers, the Fraser Valley is one amazing region to explore. Just an hour away from Vancouver, here you'll find massive peaks rising above the mighty Fraser River that winds itself through the landscape. Trail-seekers here will discover quality trails that offer both technical challenge and flow, along with great bike shops and après-ride experiences.

Squamish

When it comes to mountain biking, few places in the world rival Squamish's legendary trails with rock slabs, deep loam, and amazing flow. From its industrial heritage, the town has transformed into a world-class destination for adventure seekers and is home to a welcoming biking community that builds, maintains, and rides the hundreds of kilometres of trails found within a few minutes from the centre of town.

Whistler

All self-respecting mountain bikers owe it to themselves to experience Whistler's incredible trail diversity and legendary terrain. Whistler is a bike-friendly community to its core and visiting riders can rely completely on two wheels to explore the incredible network of trails scattered around the Whistler Valley.

Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast

There is no need for your bike to stay unused in the shed when you can ride the Sunshine Coast year-round. The array of different terrain—from adrenaline pumping downhill to technical cross-country—accommodates every style and level of rider. The Southern Sunshine Coast—a short 40-minute ferry from Horseshoe Bay—is known for its smooth flow trails through spectacular scenery while the Northern Sunshine Coast is notorious for its phenomenal cross-country rides through vibrant old-growth forests.

Whistler Mountain Bike Park

Whistler Mountain Bike Park

For over 20 years the Whistler Mountain Bike Park has set the standard for gravity-fueled mountain biking. Nowhere else on the planet offers as much fun on two wheels as Whistler does. Every aspect of the bike park has been carefully planned and crafted to make sure that you not only have as much fun as possible, but also to help you progress your skills and become a more confident rider.

2023 Operating Season: May 19-October 9 (daily)

North Shore

North Shore

Vancouver's North Shore is comprised of three municipalities (District of North Vancouver, City of North Vancouver, and the District of West Vancouver) and one very large mountain biking community. Since the 1980s when the first mountain bikes set treads on the North Shore a small team of dedicated trail builders have quietly created an immense labyrinth of trails inspired by nothing more than nature and their imaginations for what is possible on a bike. It is truly one of a kind.

Pemberton

At the north end of the Sea-to-Sky Highway is Pemberton, the hidden gem among so many well-known riding destinations found further down the road. Not to be underestimated, this place offers some of the most technically advanced trails in the province.

Tour itinerary

From North Shore, to Sunshine Coast, to interior rainforest,  flow of your mountain bike tour British Columbia has been designed to become progressively more technical throughout the course of the week. Your guides will coach you through each new challenge so that you make the most of your BC experience and go home a more technically skilled and confident mountain biker.

You should arrive in Vancouver a day or two before the tour start date to allow your body to adjust and to make sure any flight or luggage delays don’t spoil your trip.

Your guides will pick you up from the H+I recommended hotel on the morning of day 1.

Your local mountain bike guide will meet you early in the morning in Vancouver to help load up the van with luggage and bikes, and make the short drive to the North Shore mountains.

Here we’ll build and set up bikes, and talk through the all important tour briefing before tackling the world famous trails of “The Shore”. These are trails that every rider needs to experience!

Contrasting the hustle and bustle of the city, you’ll pedal your way deep into the forest and discover ribbons of trail that weave their way through the towering trees.

After a hearty breakfast we’ll head off into the lush green forest to explore the diverse network of singletrack trails that await.

Today is all about enjoying some fast, flowing trails that work with the natural landscape and allow you to open the taps a bit. You’ll ride the soft forest floor loam, giving a more chilled vibe that matches the laid back atmosphere of the Sunshine Coast.

It’s coffee-to-go this morning, as we drive down the Sunshine Coast to connect back to the mainland on a short ferry crossing. Once back on dryland, we’ll continue north and drive the stunning Sea-to-Sky highway to the outdoor mecca of Squamish.

The trails in Squamish are all MTB magazine front cover standard, and that’s thanks to the hard work and dedication of the local trail building community. The trails here are inextricably linked to the nature of the place, with rocks, roots, and woodwork laced together without interruption.

After breakfast, we’ll roll out right from our back door to spend the full day sampling the best of the Alice Lake area, with the expert knowledge of your local guides.

Alice Lake is home to some of the most luscious and flowing trails you’ve ever ridden and your guide also happens to know some hidden gems! You’ll climb your way to the top on singletrack trail that keeps you entertained with tight turns and stunning forest views. Bright green moss lines the edge of the trails and hangs from the trees as you rip through this ethereal coastal rainforest with its endless hero dirt and granite slabs.

Today we head further up the Sea-to-Sky Corridor to the ever-growing network of trails in the Whistler Valley. We’ll set off after breakfast to explore some of your guides’ favourite trails outside of the Bike Park area.

New trails pop up each season, and as your guides work with the local trail associations, they will be excited to showcase some of the latest trails which they may even have had a hand in building!

It’s our penultimate day of riding in British Columbia, and we’re reaching the farthest point of the mountain range on our BC journey, in the small farming community of Pemberton.

Moving inland to a new ecosystem you’ll notice more agriculture and different soil here in Pemberton. This is not your usual farming town as it is surrounded by towering mountains and, luckily for us, has incredible singletrack in all directions.

This is your final day of riding in Whistler, and we’ve got a beauty of a day in store!

As all of our other rides are in the rural wilds of BC, today is your chance to experience the buzz of the Whistler Bike Park. We’ve got a day of park descents planned for you with trails that you’ll never forget! Making best use of the bike park we’ll enjoy both flow and technical trails – some of which end right from our doorstep!

Sadly, today we pack our bikes, say our farewells and return you to Vancouver airport for around 1pm to catch your flight home.

Please book your return flight no earlier than 3pm that day . If you have an earlier flight please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Whistler and surroundings are one of those places every MTB rider should visit at least once in their lifetime. Everything is built, organized and maintained with riders’enjoyment in mind. On top of that, we had Austin to guide us, and what a guide he was. On top of massive local knowledge of trails, restaurants and any other need we had he was a great coach and a great guy to be around. He made all the difference. A week of pure riding fun. Thank you!!
What an amazing adventure! Allie and Lizzie were absolutely amazing. They had every aspect of this trip nailed down. From the transportation, accommodations to the food and of course the trails. They are both very clearly experts in this field. I have been asked many times “would you do it again?” If possible I would do this trip every year! Thank you for a great time!

14 glorious things to do in Vancouver, the ‘California of Canada’

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

It was a sunny day in Vancouver, Canada. From the beach at English Bay (like Santa Monica, but cleaner), you could see snow atop the mountains and hear kids laughing. After a bike ride in Stanley Park (like Griffith Park, but with beaches), I had just bought a hot dog from a cart and taken two bites when a voice rang out.

“No,” it shouted, startled and helpless.

That’s when everyone by the beach turned my way, with faces showing great concern. Because it was my voice. A sea gull had swooped, grabbed my hot dog and carried it away. The shout had left my body before I could think.

Immediately, the Vancouverites understood this. Then, with the same equanimity that allows so many Canadians to commit violence in ice rinks while displaying civility at all other times, they turned away and resumed their day.

Planning your weekend?

Stay up to date on the best things to do, see and eat in L.A .

Let this be a lesson, all you who daydream of escaping to this place that people call the California of Canada. Amid the seaside parks, forest paths, stylish skyscrapers, good food and mingled cultures, you may begin to suspect that Vancouver is a superior version of home. But its seagulls are no better than ours.

In fact, the city is full of moments like that for a Southern California visitor. One minute, you’re feeling at home or slightly better than you do at home. The next, you’re confronting a menu full of poutine. Or realizing that the toilet is in a place called the Washroom. Or getting rained on.

Everyone drives on the right, but somehow, no freeways connect to downtown.

Every year, movie, TV and streaming studios spend billions on shoots here, yet much of the time Vancouver is standing in for Seattle, San Francisco or some other city.

There’s volleyball on the beach — but when the temperature dips near freezing, they keep playing.

And all the while you hear people speaking English that’s mostly like ours, but the signage is riddled with references to travellers, colours, harbours and Tim Hortons. (Horton, whose name is on Canada’s leading coffee-shop chain , was a pro hockey player and, apparently, an enemy of possessive apostrophes.)

This almost-familiarity kept me on my toes through several days of roaming Vancouver in March. For all those thinking about their own escapes, here are 14 very Vancouver adventures.

By the way, I’m talking about a short-term escape, not a post-election change of residence . I’ve also included a few spots on Vancouver Island, a popular side trip. All the prices here are in U.S. dollars. (At recent trading rates , $1 U.S. is worth $1.34 Canadian.)

May 2022: There are closures along the KVR due to washouts and landslides. Learn more here .

July 2022: There are additional closures between Hope and Chilliwack Lake due to washouts. Information on closures can be found here , and an interactive map showing forest service road conditions can be found here .

The BC Trail traverses eastward across British Columbia’s southern border. The route starts in Cultus Lake, a stone’s throw from Vancouver — where BC’s segment of the Trans Canada Trail leaves suburban pathways for dirt — and ends in the small Rocky Mountain ski town of Fernie.

In the early ‘90s the BC Trail began as part of the Trans Canada Trail project as an effort to expand the already-popular Kettle Valley Rail Trail across the province, from Victoria to the Alberta border. While the KVR segment from Princeton to Midway remains among Canada’s most popular off-pavement bike tours, this longer route, which showcases the bulk of BC’s Trans Canada Trail, with the exclusion of the Vancouver Island section and the convoluted maze of suburban bike paths in the Fraser Valley, offers less-developed riding for the more adventurous rider. While decommissioned rail trails still make up the majority of the terrain, don’t be fooled, many of these sections are rough and are hard on gear and riders alike.

BC Epic 1000 Bikepacking Route

The BC Trail is arguably the best way to explore and visit the many breathtaking regions of British Columbia. The Coquihalla River Trail, Kettle Valley Rail Trail, and the Great Northern Rail Trail link some of the larger towns together, accompanied by scenic forest service roads and the occasional reminder that B.C is home to some technical, rocky singletrack. Popular destinations like the the Myra Canyon Trestles and old railroad tunnels are met alongside less travelled gems like Gray Creek Pass and elevated views of the Columbia River. The route mixes a healthy dose of frontcountry amenities with remote sections that require a bit more skill and planning.

As an added bonus, a self-supported bikepacking race, known as the BC Epic 1000, follows the BC Trail from Merritt to Fernie every June in true grand depart format. Lennard Pretorius of Kamloops, B.C first introduced the race in 2016 with only 7 of 14 riders finishing the route, and saw double the interest and a much higher completion rate in 2017. For riders looking for a surprisingly challenging bikepacking race, make sure to check out the links found in additional resources at the bottom of this page.

Difficulty Rating: The BC Trail was assigned a 5 out of 10 based on the distance covered and the surprisingly harsh terrain the trails follow. Although the majority of the route is not technically difficult, there are some loose, sandy, and sections with repetitive washboard that can be hard on riders. The route has plenty of services, but there are a few remote sections along the trail that have limited bailout points, which could potentially force longer than anticipated days if a resupply is needed.

Trail Notes

  • Travel on what were some of the most expensive rail roads in the world to build through some of most scenic regions of Central B.C.
  • Trestles and tunnels up to a kilometre long, will remind you of the significance of the railroad in Canadian history.
  • Grey Creek Pass is a 1,500m climb over 17km, only those who have reached the top recognize the significance of this small hurdle.
  • Ride high above the remote valleys that link some of the resupply points together, each day brings on a new challenge and new rewards.
  • Cross from valley to valley with fantastic views into the expanse of mountain ranges, rivers, and lakes beyond.
  • The Balfour Ferry across Kootenay Lake before taking on Grey Creek Pass, it’s free and offers fantastic views of local mountain ranges.
  • The BC Epic 1000 is a self-supported bikepacking race with a grand depart each June that follows the Trans BC from Merritt to Fernie.
  • Passing through several unique geographic regions and quirky towns that provide great resupply points along the way.
  • 30km of hard packed flowy singletrack between Cranbrook and Wardner via the Chief Isadore Trail.
  • Do not underestimate the terrain. Although the route follows a great portion of the Trans Canada Trail, now known as the Great Trail, most sections are incredibly rough and are slow going.
  • Cell service is limited and often non existent between towns which can sometimes be up to 8 hours of riding, bring a SPOT or similar communication device.
  • There are wild animals along the route including but not limited to cougars, black bears, grizzly bears, moose, elk, and llamas. Bear spray is strongly recommended.
  • Snow can stick around at higher elevations along the route like Grey Creek Pass and Farron Pass, these sections are usually clear by late June.
  • The best time to ride the route is late June to September due to snow, as mentioned above, and grizzly activity between Salmo and Nelson.
  • Navigating the BC Trail is not easy and a GPS is highly recommended, make sure you have extra batteries or some way to charge it.
  • There’s no shortage of campgrounds, motels, and recreation sites along the route, many of which are labeled on the route map. Most recreation sites are free or only $12 to use, those looking to save cash should take advantage of these options.
  • Some small towns close down early in the day, and will then offer no amenities even if they are listed on the route map. If you are forced to stealth camp, do so legally and away from people’s properties. And as always, #leavenotrace.
  • There are many resupply points along the route, including fantastic restaurants, dodgy gas stations, and premium level grocery stores.
  • I carried a breakfast and a dinner on me at all times incase I showed up late to a small town, this was crucial on more than one occasion and a good habit to get into.
  • Pack a water purification system of some kind, a pump or tabs, as there is plenty of mountain runoff and small lakes along the route. I did fine carrying a 1.18 litre Klean Kanteen on my downtube and a 750 ml bottle up front, topping them both up as needed.
  • You may end up staying in a remote location, far from any store, so be prepared for an impromptu backcountry campout. Do not store food in your tent or where you sleep.
  • The majority of the route is rough, chunky, and often very sandy. Plus sized tires or a suspension fork is not a bad idea to help absorb the washboard riddled trails. One of the primary reasons for grand depart riders to drop out is not being prepared for the constant chatter while riding long days. C, chamois cream and proper hygiene are essential for putting in over 150km days.
  • All rail grade? No not really. Expect some pushing, some steep descents, and substantial elevation gain each day.
  • It is best, if possible, to arrange a pickup at the end of the route but you can pack up your bike and take a greyhound bus if that is your only option.
  • Sign the Trans Canada Trail registers in Midway, the Gray Creek Store, and any others you come across, these are used to allocate funding and aid in trail stewardship efforts.
