PUBLISHED: July 24, 2023 at 11:32 a.m. | UPDATED: July 24, 2023 at 11:32 a.m.

When it came time for the Clinton Township Gratiot Cruise organizers to name a grand marshal for this year’s event, they didn’t have to think too long.

The committee of community-minded individuals decided to honor another group of do-gooders in the Rock-4-Tots organizers for the Aug. 6 cruise along Gratiot Avenue, from 14 Mile Road to Wellington Crescent.

The Rock-4-Tots group collects new unwrapped toys, gift cards, and accepts cash donations. The group is made up of Howie Hurula, Jimmy Klapp, Margie Anders, “Loco” Joe Evangelista, Joe Magolan and “Screamin'” Scott Randall of WRIF-FM (101.1)

“We selected the Rock-4-Tots organizers as this year’s grand marshals as a thank you for their 15 years of community service to the Clinton Township Goodfellows,” said Gratiot Cruise spokesman Paul Silvestri. “And we thought it would be nice that they celebrated 15 years last year and we’re celebrating 20 years, it was a good tie-in.”

A grand marshal is a person selected at an automobile race by the track owner or race sponsor to be the public leader of events on race day or throughout the race weekend.

In the case of the Gratiot Cruise, the grand marshal serves as the celebrity of the day for the event. Their biggest duty is to participate in the ceremonial lap of the cruise route following opening comments by the master of ceremonies Jim Tignanelli and Clinton Township Supervisor Robert Cannon, and performance of the National Anthem by Rose Bednar.

According to their website, Rock-4-Tots was started by Margie Anders based on her childhood experience with the Goodfellows bringing Christmas gifts to their door.

Growing up, her grandmother and mother always crocheted dresses for the dolls that Santa provided to other children in need through the Goodfellows.

Years later, she worked with Jimmy Klapp, who was the owner of The Dawghouse bar on Groesbeck Highway. He wanted to host a toy drive to collect toys for the Goodfellows. The two of them reached out to Screamin’ Scott and together, the first Rock-4-Tots event was put together in two weeks time.

The inaugural event was such a hit, others jumped on board including Loco Joe, who was a performer at the event. From there, the group formalized into a committee and joined forces with Bob Turner, who was the Clinton Township Goodfellows president at that time. Turner was in charge of making sure the proceeds would benefit the children of Clinton Township.

The committee members and volunteers first worked out of a warehouse to package the toys. Over the years, the event has moved around based on Jimmy’s ownership of the bars, but eventually landed at Freddy’s, which so far has been a great fit.

At the event, there are 50/50 raffles, and an array of raffle items to choose from including a R4T exclusive rock box filled with swag from the R4T performers. Local musicians generously volunteer with 20-minute sets throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

In 2022, the group raised $26,000 in donations to benefit the Clinton Township Goodfellows.

This year’s Rock-4-Tots event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 2-3 at Freddy’s Bar on Garfield Road in Clinton Township.

This week’s Gratiot Cruise weekly car show partners with Music & Movie in the Park Night on Wednesday at the Clinton Township Civic Center, 40700 Romeo Plank Road (at Canal Road).

Let’s cruise — Clinton Twp. Gratiot Cruise hosts pre-cruise car shows

PUBLISHED: July 9, 2023 at 12:42 p.m. | UPDATED: July 10, 2023 at 10:42 a.m.

It’s cruisin’ time on Gratiot Avenue.

The 20th anniversary of the Clinton Township Gratiot Cruise is gearing up for the big day on Sunday, Aug. 6.

Celebrating Macomb County’s largest procession of hot rods, roadsters, motorcycles, antique vehicles, pickup trucks and other wheeled contraptions that gather on Gratiot Avenue between 14 Mile Road and Wellington Crescent for a day of family fun.

In advance of the vintage vehicle showcase, the cruise committee hosts a series of pre-cruise car shows at businesses throughout the community that attract on average 100 classic cars.

“There will be food and drink specials at each car show, some sort of live entertainment (usually a DJ), and there will be classic car judging for prizes,” the committee said on its website.

The first one was held last week at Fern Hill Golf Club.

Car shows run 5-8 p.m. The show schedule includes:

  • Tuesday, July 11 — Freddy’s Bar and Grill, 40000 Garfield Road
  • Thursday, July 13 — Great Shots Backyard Bar, 36901 Garfield
  • Tuesday, July 18 — Kuhnhenn Brewing Co., 36000 Groesbeck Highway
  • Thursday, July 20 — Hennessey’s Pub + Kitchen, 42012 Hayes Road’

There is no charge to attend the shows or the cruise, which runs from noon-6 p.m. Aug. 6, with festivities starting as early as 9 a.m.

The Clinton Township Gratiot Cruise Inc. is a non-profit organization registered in the State of Michigan and recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(4) organization.

The planning group’s purpose is to organize an annual car cruise within the Clinton Township Downtown Development Authority (DDA) boundaries to promote both the businesses along Gratiot Avenue as well as the community.

Clinton Twp. Gratiot Cruise committee ‘we’ll just to have to live with’ road construction

Traffic will be restricted to only two lanes on the cruise route.

July 28, 2023 at 7:36 a.m.

Looks like Gratiot Avenue will be congested for the Clinton Township Gratiot Cruise coming up next month.

Organizers of this year’s cruise have been forced to make some changes to the route because of ongoing road construction.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has two of four lanes closed as work crews continue on a resurfacing project along Gratiot from 14 Mile Road to Wellington Crescent. MDOT says the project should wrap up this year.

The cruise committee said the event will go on as scheduled although participants may find the route a little backed up.

“The construction will definitely have an impact on our event,” Paul Silvestri, the committee secretary and treasurer said in an email. “Obviously, with the right two lanes closed, traffic will be affected and the viewing of cruising will probably be obstructed.”

According to Silvestri, the Family Fun Zone area will be moved from the Regional Shopping Center at Gratiot and 15 Mile Road  to the back of the McLaren Macomb “glass house” building at Gratiot just south of 16 Mile Road (Metro Parkway).

“We are not shortening the route or making any adjustments with the route, we are just living with it,” Silvestri said.

The committee also said “contrary to what some construction workers on Gratiot may be telling people, we will still be cruising Gratiot Avenue.”

MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross referred a reporter to Gratiot Cruise personnel for comment the changes.

The 20th anniversary of the Clinton Township Gratiot Cruise will be held on Sunday, Aug. 6.

Local News | Clinton Twp. Gratiot Cruise moves the party to 16 Mile Road

Cruise spokesman says change will make for ‘one-stop shopping’.

For their 20th anniversary, the Clinton Township Gratiot Cruise committee has moved all of the township’s activities to one spot at this Sunday’s cruise event.

That’s not by choice, but as a matter of practicality as ongoing construction along Gratiot Avenue is forcing planners to consolidate. Committee spokesman Paul Silvestri acknowledges attendance might be down because of the logistics.

“For this year, everything will be down at the corner of 16 Mile,” Silvestri said. “It will all be consolidated. It’s kind of like one-stop shopping.”

Gratiot is in the middle of a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) $22.6 million resurfacing project from 14 Mile Road to Wellington Crescent, which also happens to be the cruise boundaries. Two lanes of the road in each direction is closed for construction.

Because of the closures, MDOT isn’t allowing the cruise to temporarily shut down any lanes to allow for the VIP lap which traditionally opens the cruise, committee members said. The VIP lap, where police the cruise route to let the dignitaries take a ceremonial ride through it, will return next year.

As a result, the Family Fun Zone activities that normally would be located in the Regional Shopping Center parking lot in front of AMC Star Gratiot theater will move to the rear of the McLaren Building at the southeast corner of Gratiot and Metro Parkway (16 Mile Road).

That’s all of the nonprofit groups, food trucks, Parks and Recreation events, bounce houses, peddle car races, kid’s bike raffle, Paint the Van and Touch-a-Truck. At the front of building will be the Cruise Headquarters and car show.

The area will have its own entrance east of Gratiot on 16 Mile, said Tami Letcavage, the township’s assistant parks director.

“This is only impacting us for this year,” Letcavage said. “We’re trying to be logical by having everything in one place. We think that will make it easier for the public to access.”

Letcavage said some parts of the activities will include toy construction tools to carry the construction theme over.

Classic cars, street rods, special interest vehicles and more will roll into Chesterfield Township this weekend for the 2023 North Gratiot Cruise.

The annual event will return on Saturday with new activities including an artisan craft fair and kids zone. Thousands of people are expected to turn out for the car show and cruise.

“For over 10 years this event has attracted car buffs and families,” said Donna Weatherby, director of marketing and special events. “We added the craft fair and kids zone so there is something for everyone.”

The car show, craft fair and kids zone will open at 10 a.m. in the Value City Furniture parking lot on Gratiot Avenue, south of 23 Mile Road, near Cotton Road. More than 30 local artisans are expected to participate, offering products ranging from jewelry, art and edibles to clothing and toys. The kids zone will offer free games for all ages, as well as face painting.

“We expect over 100 registered cars participating in our car show,” Weatherby said.

Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded in stock and modified classes at 4 p.m. Best Overall in Show wins $1,000; first place wins $300; second place, $200; and third place, $100.

Scoring is performed by judges in five areas: body, engine, interior, paint and wheels.

Registration costs $30 and can be completed online through Friday or in person at the event.

Cars will parade along Gratiot Avenue at noon, with cruising encouraged until 5 p.m.

“We have an official parade led by Chesterfield Public Safety and an antique tow truck owned by Joe Ballor where cars start lining up to be led down Gratiot to Hall Road, where we then encourage the car owners to ‘cruise’ Gratiot and enjoy other businesses who have special events planned on their own,” said Weatherby, noting the owner of Joe Ballor Towing Inc. has been a longtime supporter of the event. “We also have a special feature from Highway Auto Parts, featuring a ‘rat rod’ onsite.”

Live music will be performed by Bandwagon, a metro Detroit rock and alternative cover band.

Before the car show revs up, the third annual Chesterfield 5K run/walk and non-competitive 1K fun run/walk will begin at 9 a.m. from the cruise headquarters.

Cash prizes include $500 for the top male and female winners, $250 for second place and $100 for third place. The top finishers in each age category will receive a $25 Hanson’s gift card.

The local school district with the most pledged support will win $1,000 awarded to the athletic department. New this year, the area church with the most runners also wins $1,000 to be used for programs within its youth ministry.

The 5K route runs primarily through local residential streets, starting on Cotton Road and turning into the Eagle’s Nest subdivision. The 1K route will be a path around cruise headquarters, staying onsite for the duration. Bibs will be given to those who want them, but racing times will not be recorded.

Advanced registration is encouraged, but participants can also sign up on race day. Registration for the 5K costs $30 for adults. Students can join for free. The 1K fun run/walk costs $10 for adults and is free for everyone else. All registrants will receive an event T-shirt and medal. Water and snacks will also be provided.

The North Gratiot Cruise is a one-day celebration of automobile history that attracts muscle cars, street rods, customs, collector cars and special interest vehicles, as well as many car enthusiasts.

“Thousands of people attend our cruise headquarters in front of Kohl’s and Value City Furniture, and many more sit along the grass on Gratiot watching the cruisers,” Weatherby said.

The annual event is presented by the North Gratiot Cruise Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that distributes net proceeds to local community groups. Weatherby said the goal is “to provide a day of events for the entire community while raising money to give back to local organizations in Macomb County.”

“Over the years we have donated over $60,000,” she said.

Clinton Township trustees talk about Gratiot Cruise plans, changes

By: Dean Vaglia | C&G Newspapers | Published July 24, 2023

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — As the annual Gratiot Cruise nears, the Clinton Township Board of Trustees spent significant time discussing the event at its July 10 meeting.

Discussion on the matter began with the Recreation Department asking for $10,000 to support the police, fire and recreation staff working the event and to support the family fun zone. The department used to have a budget for the event, though over the years it was removed because the Gratiot Cruise Committee reimbursed the township for services rendered for the event.

Trustees approved the line-item request.

“I am in support of this because I think this is a much more transparent way to do it than what we’ve done in the past,” Trustee Mike Keys said.

Aside from the line-item approval, trustees and township officials discussed other changes to the coming cruise.

“We have the construction going on; we appreciate MDOT and all of their work making Gratiot more drivable, but we’re reduced to two lanes so no parade this year at the start of it,” Township Treasurer Paul Gieleghem said. “The family fun zone is moving from the 15 Mile Road regional shopping plaza over to the 16 Mile McLaren Building.”

Gieleghem expressed concern over the parking complications that would come from the family fun zone being moved, to which Brian Kay, Clinton Township recreation director, said they would need the full cooperation of local businesses and public spaces “as per usual but even more so now.”

Keys expressed dissatisfaction with the family fun zone being moved to the other side of the street, therefore making it harder for residents to access. A shuttle to the relocated fun zone was discussed but trustees determined it was too late to do anything about.

Mary Bednar, the township’s public services director, told the board there would be no road closures due to the parade being canceled, aside from Gratiot being reduced to two lanes. The inside lanes are expected to be open while the outer lanes are expected to be closed.

Many of the changes for 2023 are expected to revert back to normal once the construction ends.

“Our goal is to get it back to where it was, next year,” Supervisor Robert Cannon said about the fun zone’s move. “This year we can’t do it for safety.”

The Gratiot Cruise is not the only event facing changes this year. The Quinn Road Reunion organizers canceled the event this year due to the soil work at Prince Drewry Park and being unable to secure a replacement location. The event is planned to return in 2024.

Public safety purchases The board also approved several purchases for the fire and police departments.

The Clinton Township Fire Department purchased 110 new SCBA air cylinders and associated equipment for about $420,000 from West Shore Fire in Allendale. The provider did not have the lowest bid, but fire officials determined a buy-one-get-one-free sale on cylinders would allow the department to buy more. New extraction equipment was bought for about $143,000; a new generator for Station No. 2 was bought for a net cost of about $40,400 after trading in the old generator; and a new sauna and cooling tubs are being bought for $6,000 with help from the local firefighters’ union.

Trustees also approved the expenditure of $80,000 on three special investigation vehicles for the Clinton Township Police Department. The three cars were purchased on the used market and not subject to the usual bid and purchasing process.

The board also accepted invoices from Chippewa Valley schools for $44,550 in crossing guard reimbursements, which the township will pay back to the school district. Clintondale Community Schools did not submit any crossing guard bills for the township to reimburse.

Doha: Qatar’s 2023/2024 cruise season which commenced last year is reaching its culmination this April as five additional ships are scheduled to dock at Doha’s Grand Cruise Terminal, located at the Old Doha Port.

The most recent arrival at the port was MS Hamburg, which made its maiden call to Qatar on March 10, carrying 263 passengers and 145 crew members. Operated by Plantours Cruises and flying the flag of the Bahamas, MS Hamburg measures 144 metres in length, and 21.5 metres in width, and accommodates 400 passengers along with a crew of 170 members.

Scheduled to dock at the Grand Cruise Terminal on March 31 is MSC Virtuosa, a Meraviglia-Plus-class cruise ship owned and operated by MSC Cruises. Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France, MSC Virtuosa is the second ship in its class and sister ship to MSC Grandiosa.

Following closely on April 1, Seabourn Encore, renowned for its luxury offerings, will grace the terminal. With 300 suites and dimensions of 690 feet in length and 92 feet in width, Seabourn Encore represents the pinnacle of luxury cruising.

Also docking on April 1 is AIDAprima, operated by AIDA Cruises and sailing under the flag of Italy. AIDAprima, measuring 300 metres in length and 37.6 metres in width, boasts 18 passenger decks and 1,643 staterooms, accommodating over 3,300 passengers.

Wrapping up the season, Queen Mary 2, a British transatlantic ocean liner, is scheduled to dock on April 5, followed by Artania on April 25. Artania, chartered by Phoenix Reisen since 2011, was built for Princess Cruises by Wärtsilä in Finland and exudes elegance and sophistication.

Qatar Tourism’s 2023/24 cruise season is expected to welcome a total of 79 cruises and 350,000 passengers, surpassing the previous season’s figures. This surge in cruise tourism underscores Qatar’s commitment to enhancing its tourism sector and positioning itself as a premier destination on the global stage.

Chairman of Qatar Tourism, H E Saad bin Ali Al Kharji, earlier stressed the strategic importance of cruise tourism in realising Qatar’s vision of becoming a leading global destination.

Looking ahead, projections from Statista, a German online platform that specialises in data gathering and visualisation, suggest significant growth potential for Qatar’s cruise market, with revenue expected to reach $11.77m by 2024. With an increasing number of users and a shift towards online sales, Qatar’s cruise market is poised for continued expansion and evolution in the years to come.

“The revenue is also projected to experience a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR 2024-2028) of 16.35%, which will result in a projected market volume of $21.57m by 2028. Furthermore, the number of users in the cruise market is expected to reach 19.89k users by 2028. The user penetration in this market is expected to increase from 0.44% in 2024 to 0.71% by 2028. With an average revenue per user (ARPU) of $0.99k, the market is expected to generate 29% of total revenue through online sales by 2028,” it explained.

2 crew members die on Holland America ship; fire breaks out on Carnival cruise

MIAMI — Two crew members died on board a Holland America cruise ship, and a fire broke out on a Carnival ship while both of the ships were in the Bahamas this weekend, officials said.

The two crew on the Florida-based Nieuw Amsterdam died Friday during an "accidental steam release" while it was calling at the private resort island Half Moon Cay, Holland America said in a statement on Sunday.

"There was an accidental steam release in an engineering space on board Nieuw Amsterdam, which sadly resulted in the death of two crew members," the cruise line said.

The Bahamas Maritime Authority and the Dutch Safety Board were investigating the exact cause of the release, Holland America said.

A representative of the Bahama’s Coroner’s Court did not immediately respond to a request for information, such as the crew members’ identities and the cause and manner of death.

The cruise line said the conclusions of any investigation would be taken seriously. "Safety is always our top priority, and we are working to understand what, if anything, can be learned from this tragic accident," it said.

Passenger Laine Doss said she was on board when the captain announced the deaths on the vessel's P.A. system.

"We were celebrating the last day of the cruise," she said, when the mood changed "to something extremely somber."

The captain's voice broke, she said.

"He broke down crying," Doss said. "There was a moment of silence that the captain requested. And that entire scenario did affect the entire cruise. Things were canceled, joyous events were canceled, and we really just thought about mortality — the people who perished on the ship."

Crew members were being offered counseling, Holland America said.

Dutch government inspectors determined the vessel to be "fully operable," and this was "confirmed" by the U.S. Coast Guard, the cruise line said.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson said she was looking into the statement and was unable to immediately confirm it.

The Nieuw Amsterdam returned Saturday to its home port of Fort Lauderdale, guests disembarked, and the vessel has embarked on a cruise with a stop in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on Monday, Holland America said.

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this event," the cruise line said. "We’ve been in contact with the families of both team members and are offering our support to them and to all of our crew at this difficult time."

The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip.

Fire on the port-side exhaust funnel of another Florida-based cruise ship in the Bahamas, the Carnival Freedom, rocked some passengers Saturday and took the ship out of commission for repairs, the cruise line said.

No injuries were reported.

In a statement Sunday, Carnival Cruises acknowledged witness reports of a lightning strike or the sound of thunder before the fire erupted.

Passenger Heath Barnes said the ship was on a detoured path, destined for an unscheduled stop in Freeport, as a result of stormy weather and high winds when fire started.

"I was shocked," he said. "I mean, I looked out there and you're not supposed to see black smoke and fire shooting out of the tail end of the cruise."

The blaze was preceded by "the loudest thunder-lightning clap that I've ever heard in my life," Barnes said.

Ship personnel extinguished the fire, Carnival Cruises said.

The cruise line said a technical team determined the ship sustained enough damage that it will need repairs before it can be returned to scheduled cruises. The funnel was stabilized, passengers were expected to be returned to Port Canaveral, and the ship will set off to Freeport for repairs, it said.

"The damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," Carnival Cruises said.

Passengers scheduled for those late-March cruises are being offered full refunds and credit that can be used for a future cruise, it said.

It was the second funnel fire on the Carnival Freedom since 2022.

Against the bold blues and powder-white sands of the Adriatic, admire Slovenia’s Venetian-influenced buildings, the 4th-century pizazz of Split’s Diocletian's Palace, Dubrovnik’s dramatic Old Town, and Montenegro’s mighty forts. Whether genning up on the Knights of Malta in Valletta, discovering Napoleon’s childhood in Corsica, cruising along the French Riviera to Mallorca - where Arab and Balearic influences meet - or reveling in Gaudi’s masterpieces in Barcelona, you’ll be enthralled by history at every stop on this story-filled vacation.

The legacy of the Renaissance - a cultural movement borne in 14th-century Italy, which spread throughout Europe shaping intellectual life, art, architecture and the arts can be seen in abundance as you travel through the region’s most extraordinary cities. Discover the mind-blowing art of the Renaissance masters at Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice and Rome’s Galleria Borghese, a 17th-century villa which houses art, sculptures and antiquities. Insider tips Good to know in every situation

When visiting religious sites such as churches, mosques or synagogues, dress modestly, particularly in the Middle East. Opt for long sleeves, and keep your shoulders, back and legs covered. A lightweight scarf or sarong can come in handy as a makeshift headscarf or coverup, which can be easily thrown on at the last minute if it’s unexpectedly required.

Sprawling ancient marvels and Europe’s cobblestone-lined, often narrow city streets are best explored on foot. To ensure you make the most of things, pack a well-worn-in pair of comfortable shoes, and some trusty blister plasters, just in case.

Temperatures in the Middle East and the Med can really soar, plus there’s plenty of time spent on beaches and in the desert on this segment, so invest in a decent wide-brimmed hat, eco-friendly sunscreen, and keep a refillable bottle of water with you as you explore.

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse: What to do if you booked cruise out of Baltimore

when is gratiot cruise 2023

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has crippled transportation around Baltimore and caused people to scramble to find alternatives.

After Tuesday's disaster, drivers have had to find alternate routes to get into Baltimore, and vessel traffic was suspended indefinitely from the Port of Baltimore, causing people who booked cruises to wonder what's next.

What happened to the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore?

A major span critical to East Coast shipping collapsed early Tuesday morning after it was struck by a large cargo ship.

The  cargo ship Dali  struck the Key bridge around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday after experiencing electrical problems, officials said. The  984-foot ship sailing  under the flag of Singapore was slated to arrive early next month in Sri Lanka, according to MarineTraffic, a global ship tracking service. The bridge then collapsed into the Patapsco River.

Which cruise lines dock at the Port of Baltimore?

According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore. Carnival Cruise Line, American Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International have cruises scheduled to leave the port.

What are cruise lines doing with the Port of Baltimore closed?

Carnival Cruise Line said Tuesday it's temporarily moving Carnival Legend's Baltimore operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

Carnival Legend is scheduled to return from its current voyage on Sunday, March 31. It will now return to Norfolk, Virginia, on Sunday. Passengers will be provided complimentary bus service back to Baltimore. Carnival Legend’s next seven-day itinerary on March 31 will then operate from and return to Norfolk. Guests on the current and upcoming cruises are being informed of this change.

Carnival Pride has a trip scheduled for April 28. The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a release. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean’s  Vision of the Seas  has a roundtrip itinerary scheduled to depart Baltimore on April 12, according to the cruise line’s website.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” a spokesperson for the line said in an email to USA TODAY. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

American Cruise Line

American Cruise Lines  has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at present our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian doesn't have a booking out of Baltimore until September on Norwegian Sky . The cruise line is in contact with the port and will contact passengers and travel partners if changes are made.

Alternate driving routes for the Baltimore bridge

Drivers going from Wilmington to Baltimore or Washington should take I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However, the Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are  some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13 feet and 6 inches high or 8 feet wide may not use the I-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14 feet and 6 inches high or 11 feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

Anthony DiMattia, Eve Chen and Nathan Diller contributed to this story.

Factbox-Baltimore Port: What Impact Will Bridge Collapse Have on Shipping?

Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) -A major bridge collapsed in the U.S. port of Baltimore in the early hours of Tuesday after being struck by a container ship, plunging cars into the river below.

Traffic was suspended at the port until further notice, Maryland transportation authorities said.

PORT FEATURES

It is the deepest harbor in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, closer to the Midwest than other East Coast ports, with five public and 12 private terminals, according to Maryland government website.

It is one of the smallest container ports on the Northeastern seaboard, handling 265,000 containers in the fourth quarter of last year, according to container shipping expert Lars Jensen.

The Port of New York and New Jersey handled around 2 million containers in that same period, and Norfolk Port in Virginia handled 850,000, so the flow of containers to Baltimore can likely be redistributed to bigger ports, Jensen said.

CURRENT STATUS OF CARGO SHIPS INSIDE PORT

More than 40 ships remained inside Baltimore port, including small cargo ships, tug boats and pleasure craft, data from ship tracking and maritime analytics provider MarineTraffic shows.

At least 30 other ships had signaled their destination was Baltimore, the data showed.

It is the busiest U.S. port for car shipments, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

The port handles imports and exports for major automakers including Nissan, Toyota, General Motors, Volvo Car, Jaguar Land Rover and Volkswagen, including luxury models for Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley.

It is also the largest U.S. port by volume for handling farm and construction machinery, as well as agricultural products.

Imports of agricultural products totaled 3 million tonnes last year, including 1.2 million of sugar and salt, as well as gypsum, fertilisers and forest products, according to Ishan Bhanu, lead agricultural commodities analyst at Kpler.

U.S. sugar company ASR Group, which operates a refinery near the center of Baltimore, said it does not expect short-term impacts to its operations.

Other top imports were paper/paperboard and plywood/veneer/particle board, the Maryland authority website shows.

The Curtis Bay Piers coal terminal is around 3 miles from the highway which ran over the bridge.

During the first nine months of 2023, Baltimore was the second-biggest port for U.S. coal exports, behind Norfolk, Virginia, according to the latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Baltimore exported about 20.3 million short tons of coal, up from 14.3 million short tons during the same period in 2022.

About 13.3 million short tons of exports from Baltimore during the first nine months of 2023 were steam coal and 7.0 million short tons were metallurgical coal

The Baltimore port also exports smaller amounts of other metals and minerals.

Other top export commodities by weight in 2022 were liquefied natural gas (LNG), waste-paper, ferrous scrap, and automobiles/light trucks, according to Maryland government data.

Cove Point liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, which is upstream from the bridge, is the nearest LNG terminal.

The terminal's operator, U.S. energy firm Berkshire Hathaway Energy, said operations were not impacted by the collapse of the bridge, adding it continues to work closely with the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure that the facility is operating safely.

ICIS ship tracking data shows Cove Point typically exports about 500,000 tonnes of LNG per month.

CRUISE SHIPS

It is also a cruise terminal, with Norwegian, Carnival and Royal Caribbean, all using the port for Caribbean, Canadian, and other Atlantic destinations.

In 2023, cruises carrying more than 444,000 passengers departed from the port, the Maryland government website says.

LONDON METAL EXCHANGE WAREHOUSES

In Baltimore warehouses registered with the London Metal Exchange, there are 756 metric tons of nickel, 150 tons of tin and 50 tons of copper, LME data shows.

BUNKER FUEL

Bunker fuel traders said deliveries to the port of Baltimore and Annapolis Anchorage are likely to be affected from the suspension of traffic and ports in Pennsylvania and Virginia could serve as potential bunkering alternatives.

This could affect vessel schedules and may lead to an increase in bunker fuel prices at the alternative ports, depending on how long the port of Baltimore remains inaccessible.
