Stars of PGA TOUR Champions to return to The Woodlands in April for Insperity Invitational

THE WOODLANDS, TX – Many of golf’s greatest names on the PGA TOUR Champions will be returning to the tee at The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course, April 26 – May 2, for the 2021 Insperity Invitational presented by UnitedHealthcare.

The Tradition of Excellence returns to The Woodlands after the 2020 edition of the Insperity Invitational was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be back on the PGA TOUR Champions schedule this year and are thankful to our corporate partners, including Insperity and UnitedHealthcare, for sticking with us during these unprecedented times as we developed a plan to safely welcome golf’s best back to The Woodlands,” said Bryan Naugle, Executive Director, Insperity Invitational, who added the tournament will follow health guidelines outlined by the Center for Disease Control and the PGA TOUR.

“To ensure the safety of our entire community, we are planning a scaled-down version of our traditional tournament week festivities, but we will ensure there are plenty of opportunities to engage the community in our award-winning event on the weekend of tournament week.”

The focus of this year’s tournament will be two-fold. Tournament staff are putting the finishing touches on plans to host the Woodforest National Bank Championship Pro-Am, April 28-29. The 17th edition of the Insperity Invitational championship play will take place April 30 – May 2. No other events will be scheduled during tournament week.

While spectators will not be permitted access to the golf course during practice rounds and Pro-Am days, Naugle and his staff look forward to welcoming golf fans in Houston area back to The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course Friday through Sunday to enjoy FREE admission to watch the 54-holes of competition play.  Masks will be mandatory for ALL spectators on-site.  Parking and transportation information will be released in the coming weeks.

“The players, volunteers and community-at-large remains our primary concern in our preparation to safely allow for a return to play while the pandemic continues to run its course,” added Naugle. “That said, we remain committed in making a positive impact on our community through hosting the Insperity Invitational while continuing to entertain golf fans with an incredible field that is taking shape.”

Volunteer opportunities still exist for those looking to get involved with the Insperity Invitational. Walking Scorers, Marshals and a new Safety committee are just a few of the options.  The Insperity Invitational has implemented an extensive set of COVID-19 health and safety measures to ensure all volunteers feel comfortable and safe on-site. For a complete list of volunteer committees and registration details, please visit  www.insperityinvitational.com

Scott McCarron captured his 10th of 11 PGA TOUR Champions victories at the 2019 Insperity Invitational. The tournament will begin to announce a stellar lineup of players looking to add their names to this year’s tee sheet in the coming weeks.

After health scare that saw him lose 25 pounds, steve stricker is set to return to champions tour in houston, share this article.

champions tour houston

The last 12 months have been something of a whirlwind for Steve Stricker, with the 12-time PGA Tour winner enjoying the thrill of captaining the American Ryder Cup to victory immediately followed by a health scare that left the Wisconsin native emaciated.

But Stricker, who said he lost considerable weight while suffering from a condition that caused inflammation around his heart, is slated to return to action next week at the Insperity Invitational, the Houston stop on the PGA Tour Champions.

Stricker spent 11 days at UW Hospital last fall with an ailment that simply started as a cough.

“I’m down 25 pounds. I’m freshman-in-high school weight. I lost all my muscle. I look like an 85-year-old man, dude. My skin is hanging,” he said back in January, soon after the incident. “I kind of have a feeling that (the Ryder Cup) could have had a part in it. It’s a letdown, right, after that happens? And then your immune system is probably down. It probably played a role in it somehow.”

“My heart is in rhythm now. It was jumping in and out of rhythm from Thanksgiving all the way to Christmas Eve.”

Steve Stricker's comeback begins next week! He's committed to play @InsperityInvtnl . pic.twitter.com/t2W4mlVPPJ — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) April 22, 2022

Stricker’s cardiologist originally said it could be six months before he could return to competition, but the University of Illinois product appears to be shaving about a month off that timeline.

And although a former golf coach suggested he simply sit on the sideline and enjoy this phase of his life, the 55-year-old Stricker — who has seven Champions tour victories, including three majors — said that simply didn’t sit right.

“That’s not my style, you know?” Stricker said. “I like to work at things.”

Stricker captained his U.S. to a 19-9 victory over Europe at Whistling Straits, in his home state of Wisconsin. Soon after, he took trophies from the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup , the other biennial match-play event between the U.S. and an international team, to a Champions event in Jacksonville.

Stricker became only the third man to captain winning U.S. teams in both competitions, joining Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

Eagles star Jason Kelce announces retirement

Another preseason clasico, barcelona-real madrid, coming to u.s. this summer.

In what has become a burgeoning, money-making tradition , FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will bring their renowned rivalry to the United States for a second consecutive summer.

They'll play El Clasico, as its known, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 29, as part of the second-year Soccer Champions Tour.

It will be a preseason match, of course. The tour — which will also feature Manchester United , Arsenal , Juventus and AC Milan — is not a tournament like some of its predecessors were. It is essentially eight one-off games, smack-dab in the middle of the Women's World Cup, billed by organizers as a "summer series" that will span California, Las Vegas, Texas and Florida.

But the headliner is the game of all games, perhaps the world's most celebrated sporting rivalry, at the grandiose stadium of all grandiose stadiums, Jerry World, the 105,000-seat home of the Dallas Cowboys that aspires to host the 2026 World Cup final .

El Clasico comes to the U.S.

When Barca and Madrid first brought their blood feud to the U.S. in 2017, the concept was ridiculed by some purists; but the exhibition game, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, was a roaring success. The Miami Clasico drew 1.7 million viewers on ESPN platforms and a sellout crowd willing to pay several hundreds of dollars apiece for tickets. Players competed, genuinely. A 3-2 Barcelona win thrilled everybody involved.

It felt, at the time, like a watershed moment for the International Champions Cup , the preseason event that grew to 18 teams and 27 games spread across nine countries late last decade. In early 2020, organizers were in negotiations to inaugurate Southern California’s SoFi Stadium with a second stateside Clasico that summer.

But then came COVID-19. The ICC canceled its 2020 programming, fizzled during the pandemic, and devolved into a legal dispute between its parent company, Relevent Sports, and its mastermind, the legendary soccer promoter Charlie Stillitano. The men's ICC has not been played since.

Relevent still runs a women’s ICC and other ventures. This summer, it is working with England 's Premier League and Spain 's La Liga on two separate North American tours. But in 2022, the Soccer Champions Tour swooped in for Barca and Madrid, and organized a Clasico at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. (Barca won, 1-0, in front of a boisterous, sellout crowd.)

In its second year, the Soccer Champions Tour has expanded to feature two clubs each from Spain, England and Italy . Sixth Street, a global investment firm that has partnered with both Barca and Real Madrid , is the company behind it. AEG is producing it. Legends is a key partner. And Stillitano, according to a source with knowledge of the tour's evolution, has been involved as a consultant.

Preseason tour schedules

The Soccer Champions Tour announced its full 2023 slate Friday:

Saturday, July 22: Barcelona vs. Juventus — Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California

Sunday, July 23: Real Madrid vs. AC Milan — Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California

Wednesday, July 26: Arsenal vs. Barcelona — SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California

Wednesday, July 26: Real Madrid vs. Manchester United — NRG Stadium, Houston

Thursday, July 27: Juventus vs. AC Milan — Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, California

Saturday, July 29: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid — AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

Tuesday, August 1: AC Milan vs Barcelona — Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

Wednesday, August 2: Juventus vs. Real Madrid — Camping World Stadium, Orlando

Kickoff times haven’t yet been determined. In their Friday news release, organizers said that “the matches remain subject to approval by the relevant football authorities,” but that is likely a formality.

Separately, Arsenal and Manchester United have organized a preseason friendly at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 22. United is also set to play Wrexham on July 25 in San Diego — presumably with a reserve team, because one day later, it is now scheduled to play Real Madrid in Houston. It then plays Borussia Dortmund on July 30 in Vegas .

Arsenal will also play the MLS All-Stars on July 19 in Washington, D.C.

The Premier League's own "summer series" will feature Chelsea , Newcastle, Aston Villa , Fulham , Brighton and Brentford, with games in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, New Jersey and Maryland.

Power 36 | Feb. 26

1. Houston (2): The Cougars had top seed week by beating Iowa State and winning at Baylor in OT. 2. UConn (1) : The Huskies bounced back from the loss at Creighton to dispose of Villanova. 3. Purdue (3): The Boilermakers crushed Rutgers and beat down Michigan. 4. Iowa State (6): The Cyclones lost at Houston, but are still looking like a top two seed in the Big 12 tournament. 5. Tennessee (10) : The Vols are in a first-place tie in the SEC with Alabama looming. 6. Kansas (8): The Jayhawks handled Texas to stay in the Big 12 chase. 7. Marquette (7): The Golden Eagles are primed for their showdown with Creighton as they try to lock in the second seed in the Big East. 8. Arizona (3): The Wildcats saved face by beating Washington and after losing at home to Washington State, giving the Cougars a season sweep. 9. Baylor (9): The Bears went to OT before losing to Houston. They are still elite, but need to beat Kansas this week. 10. Kentucky (13): The Wildcats obliterated Alabama and had the look of a Final Four team just after losing at LSU. 11. Alabama (5): The Tide was a defensive no-show against the Wildcats, but this is still an elite team. 12. North Carolina (11): The win at Virginia proved the Tar Heels are still the team to beat in the ACC. 13. Duke (12): The Blue Devils lost at Wake Forest but that came after two road wins at Florida State and Miami. 14. Illinois (14): The Illini lost at Rec Hall at Penn State but then bounced back to dispatch Iowa. 15. Creighton (15): The Bluejays got the much-needed win over UConn, but then couldn’t sweep the week and lost at St. John’s. 16. Saint Mary’s (16): The Gaels are still undefeated in the WCC ahead of the showdown with the Zags. 17. South Florida (19): The Bulls have clinched a share of the American regular season title with a chance to win the league outright! Please take notice of this amazing feat. They have won 13 in a row!!! Amir Abdur-Rahim has to be in consideration for national coach of the year now. 18. Washington State (17): The Cougars got a season sweep of Arizona, but then couldn’t create more distance in the standings by losing at Arizona State. 19. Gonzaga (22): Graham Ike had a player of the week run with 26 and 20, points respectively in two games. 20. Florida (20): The Gators have the strong look of an NCAA Tournament team. 21. Wake Forest (NR): The Demon Deacons are back with wins over Pitt and Duke. 22.  Nebraska (32): The Huskers had a stellar week with wins over Indiana on the road and at home against Minnesota. 23. Loyola Chicago (35): The Ramblers are tied with Richmond in first place in the A-10. Drew Valentine has done a great job with this club. 24. Utah State (34): The Aggies got the win over San Diego State and tied with Boise State for first in the MWC. 25. San Diego State (18): The Aztecs are a game back in the standings but are still the best threat to go deep in March. 26. Auburn (26): The Tigers bounced back from the Kentucky loss to win at Georgia. 27. TCU (24): The Frogs split the week in the rugged Big 12 but are still a top-four seed — for now — in the conference tournament race. 28. Northwestern (31): The Wildcats continue to find ways to win and got the much-needed win over Michigan to stay in the double-bye chase in the Big Ten. 29. Boise State (NR): The Broncos have won three in a row and are tied with Utah State atop the MWC. 30. Clemson (30): The Tigers have won two in a row to stay on par for a top-five finish. 31. Pitt (28): The Panthers have won six of seven with the only loss being at surging Wake Forest. 32. South Carolina (25): The Gamecocks snapped a two-game losing skid by winning at Ole Miss. 33. Texas Tech (33): The Red Raiders had an odd week, beating TCU by one but then getting blitzed at UCF. 34. BYU (NR): The Cougars split the week by beating Baylor at home, but then losing at Kansas State. 35. Mississippi State (NR): The Bulldogs have won three in a row and are gearing up for a crazy finish with Kentucky, at Auburn, at Texas A&M and at home against South Carolina. 36. Seton Hall (NR): The Pirates have won three in a row and have 11 Big East wins!!!!

Dropped out: Michigan State (21), Dayton (23), Colorado State (27), Virginia (29), Grand Canyon (36)

Top 10 games to watch

1. Tennessee at Alabama, Saturday: The SEC title could be decided in Tuscaloosa. The Vols need to get through Auburn earlier in the week in Knoxville, while the Tide are Ole Miss first. But if they both do then we’ve got the likely showdown for the SEC title.

2. Gonzaga at Saint Mary’s, Saturday: The Bulldogs have won six in a row since losing at home to the Gaels. They are playing San Francisco at the Chase Center before this season-ending game. Saint Mary’s, up two games on the Bulldogs, are at Pepperdine before this game. Gonzaga probably needs to beat Saint Mary’s once in the next few weeks — either in Moraga or in Las Vegas.

3. Dayton at Loyola Chicago, Friday: The Flyers enter the week a game behind the Ramblers, who are tied with Richmond atop the A-10. Dayton has the best chance to be an at-large out of the A-10, but winning the regular season would help the chances. The Ramblers are trending toward a bid and this is the only time the two teams will play. This is a monster game for Drew Valentine and the Ramblers.

4. Kansas at Baylor, Saturday: The Jayhawks won by three in Lawrence. This has become one of the best Big 12 rivalries. And I’m sure this edition won’t disappoint.

5. Marquette at Creighton, Saturday: Kam Jones had an amazing week last week with 34 points in back-to-back games at Georgetown and at Xavier. The Bluejays will have just hosted Seton Hall in a critical seeding game. Lots of pressure on Creighton to get a sweep of home games this week.

6. Illinois at Wisconsin, Saturday: The Illini still have a shot to win the Big Ten and the Badgers are hoping to get one of the four coveted double-byes in the Big Ten tournament. Lots at stake in this one.

7. Virginia at Duke, Saturday: The Cavaliers lost at home to North Carolina and are struggling to crack 50 points. Duke will be primed to have an electric Cameron atmosphere game — a week ahead of the showdown with the Tar Heels.

8. Kentucky at Mississippi State, Tuesday: The Wildcats are all good now with the blowout home win over Alabama. They are back to being a title contender. The Bulldogs need this game more to clinch a bid.

9. New Mexico at Boise State, Saturday: The Lobos are desperate to get a split with the Broncos after losing to them at home earlier this season. That is one of three losses the Lobos have at home — including UNLV and most recently Air Force.

10. Nevada at Colorado State, Tuesday: The Rams are now two games behind the Wolf Pack in the Mountain West. They cannot afford to lose this game. The Wolf Pack won by 13 in Reno earlier this season.

March Madness National Team of the Week

Houston: The Cougars made another strong case to be a No. 1 seed and are in the pole position to be the top seed in the Big 12 tournament as the regular-season champs in their first season in the league. Houston beat Iowa State at home, which is one game behind the Cougars, and then won at Baylor in overtime. The schedule won’t be easy down the stretch with road games at Oklahoma and UCF and home games against Cincinnati and Kansas. But they have never wilted from a challenge. This team always rises.

March Madness National Player of the Week

Hunter Sallis, Wake Forest: The former Gonzaga guard was instrumental in a season-changing week for the Demon Deacons. Sallis scored 29 points and grabbed six boards in the 83-79 upset win over Duke. Earlier in the week, Sallis scored 17 in a win over Pitt.

Longshot Austin Eckroat records first PGA Tour win at Cognizant Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLORIDA - MARCH 04: Austin Eckroat of the United States hits his shot from the 15th tee during the continuation of the weather delayed final round of The Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches at PGA National Resort And Spa on March 04, 2024 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Brennan Asplen/Getty Images)

The PGA Tour ’s streak of longshot surprise winners continues, this time in the form of 25-year-old up-and-comer Austin Eckroat, who won the weather-delayed Cognizant Classic on Monday for his first PGA Tour win.

Eckroat entered the week as a 125-1 longshot to win, marking the eighth time in this season’s nine tournaments that a golfer way outside of expected contention won, with no top-20 stars winning any tournaments this year.

Eckroat entered Sunday tied for the lead in a packed leaderboard tied with major-winner Shane Lowry, but weather delayed the final round before leaders could even tee off. When play did begin late Sunday afternoon, Eckroat immediately pulled away with two birdies in the first five holes to take the solo lead before play was called late Sunday night.

From there, Eckroat controlled the tournament throughout. His ball striking stood out with birdies on 12 and 13 thanks to iron shots hit within 10 feet of the hole. He bogeyed the 14th hole to keep fellow young rising star Min Woo Lee within two shots, but Eckroat immediately bounced back with another birdie on 15 with an 11-foot birdie putt to all but seal the win.

A par at the last seals the deal 🏆 Austin Eckroat wins @The_Cognizant by 3 shots for his first PGA TOUR victory. pic.twitter.com/N2bI8LEUZc — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 4, 2024

While this is Eckroat’s first step into the limelight, he’s a name to know going forward. He was a four-time All-American at Oklahoma State and won a national title on a team with fellow pro golfers like Viktor Hovland, Matthew Wolff and Sam Stevens.

He was able to earn a PGA Tour card after one season on the Korn Ferry Tour, and his rookie 2023 campaign was a promising but inconsistent rollercoaster. He broke through with impressive performances like a T10 finish at the U.S. Open, a T2 at the Byron Nelson and a top-25 finish at the signature event Travelers Championship. He also missed 12 cuts which kept him just barely out of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

At 25, Eckroat has been able to harness some consistency, finishing top-50 in five of six events and of course his big win Monday that puts the young golfer into the Masters next month.

WATCH: Houston's Jamal Shead hits last-second shot to give No. 1 Cougars a huge road win vs. Oklahoma

Houston outlasted ou in norman to avoid an upset after moving to no. 1 earlier this week.

NCAA Basketball: Houston at Oklahoma

No. 1 Houston survived a scare on the road Saturday after Jamal Shead saved the day on a last-second shot to lift the Cougars past Oklahoma 87-85. With the game tied at 85-all and the clock ticking under 10 seconds, Shead missed on his first attempt at a potential game-winner down the lane but gathered his own miss before draining a fadeaway in the final second. OU ran one final play but could not get a shot off.

Shead finished with 14 points and made just two shots in the second half as he battled through injury. He led the Cougars with six assists, grabbed four rebounds and was a perfect 6 for 6 from the free-throw line.

Houston led for the majority of the game but the Sooners made things interesting down the stretch. With 15.1 seconds remaining, Sooners guard Milos Uzan helped OU retain possession by bouncing the ball off of Houston's Emanuel Sharp . OU scored on a layup two seconds later to tie things up before Shead's heroics.

The win for Houston gave coach Kelvin Sampson a homecoming win in Norman where he previously led the Sooners program from 1994-2006. Sampson and his Cougars advanced to 13-3 in Big 12 play with the win to remain alone atop the league standings.
