Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

The levels of specific activity of 137 Cs and the contents of mobile forms (1 M ammonium acetate extraction) of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Cr, Pb) and petroleum products were studied in the upper soil horizon of urban landscapes of the city of Elektrostal under conditions of local radioactive and chemical contamination were studied. In the soils within a short radius (0–100 m) around the heavy engineering plant, the specific activity of 137 Cs and the contents of mobile forms of Pb, Cu, and Zn were increased. The lognormal distribution law of 137 Cs was found in the upper (0–10 cm) soil layer; five years after the radiation accident, the specific activity of 137 Cs varied from 6 to 4238 Bq/kg. The coefficients of variation increased with an increase in the degree of soil contamination in the following sequence: Co < Ni < petroleum products < Cr < 137 Cs < Zn < Pb < Cu ranging from 50 to 435%. Statistically significant direct correlation was found between the specific activity of 137 Cs and the contents of mobile forms of Pb, Cu, and Zn in the upper horizon of urban soils, and this fact indicated the spatial conjugacy of local spots of radioactive and polymetallic contamination in the studied area. It was shown that the specific activity of 137 Cs, as well as the content of heavy metals and petroleum products in the upper layer (0–10 cm) of the soils disturbed in the course of decontamination, earthwork and reclamation is reduced.

INTRODUCTION

Contaminants migrate and accumulate in urban ecosystems under the impact of both natural and technogenic factors. The processes of technogenic migration of 137 Cs are most pronounced in radioactively contaminated territories. It was found in urboecological studies that the intensity of sedimentation of aerosol particles containing radionuclides and heavy metals is determined by the types of the surfaces of roofs, walls, roads, lawns, and parks and by their position within the urban wind field [ 12 , 26 ]. Traffic in the cities results in significant transport of dust and associated contaminants and radionuclides [ 15 , 24 ]. During decontamination measures in the areas of Chernobyl radioactive trace, not only the decrease in the level of contamination but also the possibility of secondary radioactive contamination because of the transportation of contaminated soil particles by wind or water, or anthropogenic transfer of transferring of ground were observed [ 5 , 6 ]. Rainstorm runoff and hydrological transport of dissolved and colloidal forms of 137 Cs can result in the accumulation of this radionuclide in meso- and microdepressions, where sedimentation takes place [ 10 , 16 ]. Different spatial distribution patterns of 137 Cs in soils of particular urban landscapes were found in the city of Ozersk near the nuclear fuel cycle works [ 17 ]. Natural character of 137 Cs migration in soils of Moscow forest-parks and a decrease in its specific activity in industrial areas have been revealed [ 10 ]. Determination of the mean level and parameters of spatial variations of 137 Cs in soils is one of primary tasks of radioecological monitoring of cities, including both unpolluted (background) and contaminated territories.

Emissions and discharges from numerous sources of contamination can cause the accumulation of a wide range of toxicants in urban soils: heavy metals (HMs), oil products (OPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and other chemical substances. Soil contamination by several groups of toxicants is often observed in urban landscapes [ 20 , 23 ] because of the common contamination source or close pathways of the migration of different contaminants. A comprehensive analysis of contamination of urban soils by radionuclides and heavy metals has been performed in some studies [ 21 , 25 ]. The determination of possible spatial interrelationships between radioactive and chemical contaminations in urban soils is an important problem in urban ecology.

A radiation accident took place in the Elektrostal heavy engineering works (EHEW) in April 2013: a capacious source of 137 Cs entered the smelt furnace, and emission of radioactive aerosols from the aerating duct into the urban environment took place. The activity of molten source was estimated at about 1000–7000 Ci [ 14 ]. The area of contamination in the territory of the plant reached 7500 m 2 . However, radioactive aerosols affected a much larger area around the EHEW, including Krasnaya and Pervomaiskaya streets, and reached Lenin Prospect.

Geochemical evaluation of contamination of the upper soil horizon in the city of Elektrostal was carried out in 1989–1991. This survey indicated the anomalies of concentrations of wolfram, nickel, molybdenum, chromium, and other heavy metals related to accumulation of alloying constituent and impurities of non-ferrous metals in the emissions of steelmaking works [ 19 ].

The aim of our work was to determine the levels of specific activity of 137 Cs, concentrations of mobile forms of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Cr, and Pb) and oil products in the upper soil horizons in different urban landscapes of the city of Elektrostal under the conditions of local radioactive and chemical contamination.

The San José mission is one of four sites that make up the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.

Known worldwide for its River Walk and Spanish influence, San Antonio is one Texas locale you don't want to miss. Tourists regularly wander around the city's downtown attractions , embark on daytrips to learn about the surrounding area's colorful history and sample its famous Tex-Mex cuisine. One way to see it all is with the help of a local. After consulting both expert and traveler opinions, U.S. News determined the following tours to be the best available. Whether you want to explore the city on foot or beat the Texas heat in a comfortable ride, one of these tours is bound to suit your interests and budget.

Sisters Grimm Ghost Tours – The Ghost Bus Tour

Visit a historic cemetery, the city's former red-light district, the Old Bexar County Jail and the most haunted hotel in Texas on this 2 1/2-hour bus ride. Tour-takers regularly praise the entertaining guides for their skillful storytelling. They also say that the stories aren't too scary, but rather rooted in local history. Tours are generally offered Monday through Saturday at 8 p.m., but availability changes seasonally. Tickets start at $40 per person. The tour is not recommended for children and teens 15 and younger. Sisters Grimm operates a number of similarly themed outings, including a walking tour and a haunted pub crawl.

Gray Line Tours – Texas Hill Country & LBJ Ranch Tour From San Antonio

This daytrip takes travelers to some of the top sights outside of San Antonio. Start your day at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park before driving through the Hill Country. You'll stop in the town of Fredericksburg where you can enjoy lunch or a wine tasting, or pay a visit to the National Museum of the Pacific War. The excursion also includes a visit to a local winery and the town of Luckenbach, which is known for its musical history. Patrons typically find this guided outing both fun and informative. Tickets for the roughly eight-hour trip cost around $110, which includes round-trip transportation from select hotels, but excludes admission to museums (other than the LBJ Ranch grounds), food and beverages. Tours take place daily starting at 9 a.m. Gray Line also offers half-day outings about San Antonio's history as well as a craft beer outing.

SA Food Tours – Downtown Delicacy

There's more to San Antonio's dining scene than the Tex-Mex fare for which it's known, and this tour takes curious foodies to sample the city's best bites. The three-hour, 1 1/2-mile walking tour stops at five restaurants as well other area landmarks. Along the way, guides share insights about the city's food as well as its culture and history. Tastings may include a Cuban sandwich, guacamole, pastries and desserts. Foodies tend to find the guides personable and well-informed. They enjoy the food, too, though some say that the amount doesn't justify the cost. Tours are offered Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets start at $53. Groups are capped at 12 participants. SA Food Tours also conducts private outings.

The city's River Walk attracts visitors for its scenery, shopping and dining.

Go Rio San Antonio River Cruises – Narrated River Cruise

This boat ride winds through the River Walk area of downtown as guides provide commentary about its architecture, heritage and culture. La Villita (the city's first neighborhood), the Briscoe Western Art Museum and Selena's Bridge are among the sights glimpsed from the barges along these 35-minute cruises. Riders tend to appreciate the views from the boat as well as the historical information provided by the guides. Others wish that the rides were longer. Boats launch approximately every 15 minutes between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. every day. Tickets cost approximately $15 (with discounts for local residents, children and seniors). Go Rio also operates river shuttles.

Cottonwood Wine Tours – Taste of Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg, which sits in the heart of Texas Hill Country, boasts several dozen wineries, and this tour takes wine enthusiasts to two of them before letting participants explore the town on their own. The tour includes round-trip transportation to Fredericksburg, which sits about 70 miles northwest of San Antonio, lights snacks, as well as tasting fees at the two included stops. Oenophiles find the guides' knowledge of wine and winemaking impressive. The approximately $125 price does not include lunch in town. Overall, the outing last about 6 1/2 hours, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and runs daily. Cottonwood Wine Tours provides several other beer- and wine-focused expeditions in the area.

Amigo Walking Tours – King William District Tour

San Antonio's King William Historic District was named for King William I of Prussia by the German immigrants who began developing the area in the 19th century. This approximately 90-minute, mile-long walking tour of the historic neighborhood provides insights into the district's people, history and culture. Reviewers describe guides as passionate, experienced and friendly. Amigo Walking Tours does not charge a fee for this outing, though guides welcome tips and reservations are required. Schedules for tours are released on a monthly basis, usually a few weeks in advance. In addition to the King William District Tour, Amigo Walking Tours offers a stroll through downtown San Antonio as well as private tours.

Craft Cruiser – Brewery Tour

Thanks to San Antonio's burgeoning roster of microbreweries, the city has become a destination for beer lovers. For help navigating the ever-changing local brewery scene, consider this four-hour tour from Craft Cruiser. Beer enthusiasts gather at the Growler Exchange before heading out at noon to visit three different breweries. Specific breweries visited can vary from one weekend to the next and could include Kunstler Brewing, HighWheel Beerworks and Middleton Brewing Company, among others. Patrons typically find the drivers courteous, professional and helpful. Tours are offered on Saturday and Sunday only. Tickets start at $35 per person and include transportation between breweries, a souvenir and a tour of one brewery. Upgrade to an all-inclusive ticket for unlimited samples at the three breweries visited. Food can be purchased separately. The company also offers private and custom tours.

Nation Tours – Historical Landmarks and Alamo Segway Tour

Ride a Segway among some of the key historic sites and most popular attractions of San Antonio on this two-hour expedition. The tour route encompasses St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Buckhorn Saloon & Museum, the Alamo, the Menger Hotel, the Tower of the Americas and Hemisfair park, among many other notable spots. Unexperienced Segway riders find the guides helpful and patient, while tour-takers generally regard this as a fun way to see the city. Tours take place daily starting at 9 a.m. The approximately $70 ticket includes use of a Segway, instruction on how to operate it and use of a (required) helmet. Participants must be 14 years or older to tour. The company also offers a sightseeing tour of San Antonio as well as a haunted evening tour.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

In the 18th century, Spanish priests established these five Catholic missions along the San Antonio River to serve as the center of an ethnically diverse society. Today, the missions – walled compounds encompassing a church and buildings where the priests and local Native Americans lived – represent the largest concentration of Spanish colonial missions in North America.

Bike rentals and electric assist bicycle rentals are available at each mission site throughout the park.

More About the San Antonio Missions

Mission san josé.

“Queen of the Missions.” Established in 1720, San José y San Miguel de Aguayo is the largest mission in San Antonio. Spanish designers built the mission using Texas limestone and brightly colored stucco. At its height, it provided sanctuary and a social and cultural community for more than 300 Indians. In 2011, it underwent a $2.2 million renovation to refinish interior domes, walls, and the altar backdrop. When visiting the church, be sure to look for flying buttresses, carvings, quatrefoil patterns, polychromatic plaster, and the famed “Rose Window,” a superb example of Spanish Colonial ornamentation.

Mission Concepción

Dedicated in 1755, the church at Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purisima Concepción de Acuña remains true to its original design, look and feel. In fact, the church stands as the oldest unrestored stone church in the United States. Exterior paintings have faded, but if you peek inside, you can still see original frescos in some of the church rooms.

Mission San Juan Capistrano

Established in 1731, Mission San Juan’s fertile farmlands used to allow for a self-sustainable community, and its surplus helped supply the region with produce. Today, the chapel and bell tower are still in use. When visiting, don’t miss the typical Romanesque archway at the entrance gate. For outdoor fun, take a self-guided tour on the nature trail that begins at this mission and leads to the river.

Mission Espada

The southernmost mission in San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, Mission Espada was established in 1731 and boasts the best-preserved segment of the area’s original irrigation system that was used to bring water to the fields. In 1826, a fire destroyed most of the mission buildings at Espada, with only the chapel, granary, and two of the compound walls remaining. Today, part of the original irrigation system still operates the Espada aqueduct and dam. Guided tours of the property are available every first Saturday of the month. Self-guided walking tours are available during park hours. Be sure to explore the installation near Espada, the massive Arbol de Vida, or Tree of Life that displays the personal stories and tales of San Antonio locals. And, visitors should note the unusual door and stone archway – they make for great photos!

Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo)

The Alamo, founded in 1718, was the first mission in San Antonio, serving as a way station between east Texas and Mexico. In 1836, decades after the mission had closed, the Alamo became an inspiration and a motivation for liberty during the Texas Revolution. Today, located on Alamo Plaza in downtown San Antonio, the Alamo houses exhibits on the Texas Revolution and Texas History. Visitors are invited to experience interactive history lessons, guided tours, and stroll through the beautiful Alamo Gardens. Just a short distance from the River Walk, the Alamo is a “must-see” for all who visit the Alamo City.

Admission to and Ranger-led tours at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park are always free, no reservations are required.  Ranger-led tours  are provided daily at Mission San José.

Admission to the Alamo is free.  Guided Alamo tours and additional enhanced tour experiences  are available at additional costs.

Its famous River Walk remains the beating heart of the city, but it is also a designated Creative City of Gastronomy and home to the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas.

1. Have breakfast at Mi Tierra cafe

Mi Tierra opened as a tiny three-table cafe for early-rising farmers and workers at the local mercado (market) in 1941 and has gone on to become a San Antonio Tex-Mex institution. The food is hearty and authentic – you’ll find the city’s best huevos rancheros here. And the decor is suitably over-the-top and dazzling.

If it’s quiet, head waiter Gerry Sepulveda will take you on a tour of the premises, including the extraordinary mural celebrating Hispanic leaders in the community.

2. Walk back through time at Mission San Jose

The missions in San Antonio date back to the 1700s and are the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas. They are a reminder of a time when drought forced the native people of South Texas to give up their traditional life to become Spanish, accepting a new religion and agrarian lifestyle in order to survive. 

Mission San Jose, known as the “Queen of the Missions,” is the largest too, and was restored to its original design in the 1930s. Take a ranger-guided tour for unique insights into this fascinating period of Texan history.

3. Explore the incredible San Antonio Museum of Art

The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) takes you around the world and through 5,000 years of art in a collection of buildings that once housed the Lone Star Brewery. Visitors will particularly want to explore the museum’s extraordinary collection of Latin American art, including a number of pieces related to the city’s own colonial past.

SAMA also houses special exhibitions, most recently American Made , an exhibition spanning over 250 years of American art.

4. Step up to the world’s largest cowboy boots

Towering over a branch of Saks Fifth Avenue, right beside the busy Interstate 410, these stylish 36-foot-high boots have been marking the entrance of the North Star Mall for over 40 years. Made from tubular steel sprayed with polyurethane foam, they were designed and built by Austin-born artist Bob “Daddy O” Wade, who claims they could hold 300,000 gallons of beer.

They remain all the proof you need that everything really is bigger in Texas.

5. Taste the latest culinary delights at La Gloria

Chef Johnny Hernandez is a stalwart in the San Antonio foodie scene and a mentor to many of the city’s most exciting up-and-coming chefs. His dishes showcase the flavors of Mexico and the Southwest and La Gloria, in the hip Pearl district is the purest expression of what he does.

It focuses on ocean-fresh ceviche, tiraditos, and enchiladas with a colorful new raw bar bringing fresh excitement to dining at La Gloria. All enjoyed alfresco, overlooking a lush section of the city’s River Walk.

6. Take part in America’s most colourful Day of the Dead celebrations

San Antonio is famous for its authentic Day of the Dead celebrations, regarded by many as the grandest in the entire United States. As the end of October approaches you’ll notice ofrenda – altars – popping up all over the city – in hotels, stores, restaurants, and other places of business – remembering and celebrating the lives of loved ones who have passed.

The ofrenda are colorfully decorated with photos, candles, sugar skulls, and paper papel picado – and fresh orange marigolds essential in guiding the spirits with their vibrant shade.

7. Cheer on the Day of the Dead River Parade

The official celebration begins with the Day of the Dead San Antonio River Parade. Visitors and locals alike line either side of River Walk in downtown San Antonio to cheer 26 colorfully decorated barges as they parade down the river. Each barge represents a different figure or tradition associated with the Day of the Dead, often with an accompanying Mariachi band to supply the soundtrack.

Quite simply, it is one of the most colorful and joyous water parades you’ll ever see.

8. Dive headfirst into Muertos Fest

The focal point of San Antonio’s Day of the Dead celebrations is Muertos Fest, a huge cultural event held in Hemisfair, the city’s newly redeveloped central outdoor space. The paths are lined by authentic altars, created by local citizens, and there is live music, delicious street food, and stalls selling all kinds of colorful produce as well.

The event culminates in a spectacular procession, but most of the enjoyment comes from watching San Antonians parade through the park in their finest Day of the Dead costumes. The amount of work that goes into them is astounding.

9. Savour local flavours at Tasting Texas

On the same weekend as Muertos Fest, Tasting Texas is a four-day festival celebrating the unique culinary delights of this part of Texas. Visitors get to sample delicious menu items from the city’s best restaurants and sip on specialty drinks made right in front of you.

There are seminars presented by chefs and beverage experts so you can sharpen your own skills. And each session has a different theme like ‘Burgers, Bourbon and Beer’ and ‘Bubbles, Booze and Bites.’

Choose which one takes your fancy. Or attend them all.

10. Remember the Alamo

Arguably San Antonio’s most famous landmark, The Alamo is a honey-stoned historic Spanish mission and fortress that holds a special place in the Texan psyche.

The battle here in 1836, although lost, became a rallying point for the fight for Texan independence. The knowledgeable guides here explain the story as well as characters like Davy Crockett, who played their part in creating the legend.

Make sure you check out the Phil Collins Collection. The former Genesis drummer accumulated the biggest collection of Alamo memorabilia in the world and recently gifted it to the State of Texas.

11. Discover history and rye at the Maverick Whisky Distillery

Almost directly opposite the Alamo, in a handsome building that used to house the Lockwood National Bank, you’ll find the Maverick Whiskey Distillery. The distillery takes its name from Sam Maverick, a Texas land baron, cheater of death (he survived combat at the Alamo and being captured by the Mexican Army, among other feats), and one of the signatories of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

He is also the man from which all other mavericks are named. The distillery is run by his great (x3) grandson Kenneth Maverick, and their distillery and tasting tour is a highlight of any visit to San Antonio.

12. Feel the serenity at the San Antonio Botanical Garden

The San Antonio Botanical Garden serves as a 38-acre living museum of plants and offers a tranquil escape from the Texas heat. The focus here is on Texas natives that thrive in arid conditions, as well as endangered plants not found anywhere else.

Whether you take a guided tour or wander freely along its winding paths, each corner reveals another soothing vista. Or a terrifying mythical creature, sculpted from plants, part of the Imaginary Worlds: Once Upon a Time exhibition.

Lunch at Jardin, the park’s elegant restaurant, is highly recommended too.

13. Get your country on at The Lonesome Rose

No trip to Texas is complete without a visit to a Honky Tonk Bar. And it doesn’t get much more Honky Tonk than The Lonesome Rose out in Tobin Hill on San Antonio’s St Mary’s strip. The lights are kept suitably low and the walls are covered in neon beer signs and country and western memorabilia.

And on any given night you’ll find a red-hot band playing mournful tunes, country karaoke, or, if you’re really lucky, hosting a Dolly Parton look-alike competition. Just pull up a stool, order a beer, and take it all in.

14. Pick up a souvenir at Historic Market Square

Historic Market Square is where the culture of San Antonio comes alive. Here you can immerse yourself in the sights and flavors of old Mexico as well as pick up a truly unique souvenir from the hundreds of vendors selling authentic Mexican curios and artifacts, hand-crafted leather goods, and a diverse collection of other cultural apparel.

On the weekends there is live entertainment too, with Mariachi bands turning the whole square into a mini fiesta.

15. Expand your mind at the Witte Museum

Located on the banks of the San Antonio River, the stunning Witte Museum is where nature, science, and culture meet. Here you’ll find massive exhibits on dinosaurs, the people of the Pecos, and wild Texas in a cavernous, recently renovated space that feels like a cathedral to learning.

You’ll find recreations of traditional Texas buildings in the beautifully maintained grounds and, tucked away in the South Texas Heritage Center, a real treat: Davy Crockett’s fiddle, which he may or may not have played as the Alamo lay under siege.

16. Get a custom-fitted Stetson at Paris Hatters

Family owned and operated since 1917, Paris Hatters at 119 Broadway is the place to go if you want to buy a Stetson the proper way. Not only does the company have the largest inventory of the iconic cowboy hat in the country, it has the expertise to create and style a Stetson to fit your head perfectly and bring out your hat’s unique personality.

Satisfied customers include American presidents Bush, Eisenhower, Truman and Johnson, country music royalty Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and Dwight Yoakam, and more unlikely souls like Pope John Paul II and Luciano Pavarotti.

17. Refuel with coffee and pastries at La Panaderia

Brothers José and David Cáceres opened bakery-cafe La Panadería in 2014 to share their Mexican heritage and love for baking with the people of their adopted hometown of San Antonio. San Antonio locals promptly responded by making it the most popular breakfast spot in the city. You might have to queue on the weekends but the super-fresh Mexican pastries, hearty breakfasts, and great coffee are well worth the wait.

18. Shop and eat in the hip Pearl district

Located just north of downtown San Antonio, Pear l is a hip new mixed-use neighborhood, set in the grounds of a brewery that operated between 1883 and 2000. Now it is a bustling mix of picturesque green spaces, riverside paseos (walks), quirky boutique stores, and some of the best new cafes and restaurants in the city.

Start your visit with coffee and macarons at Bakery Lorraine and then just wander. You’re sure to find something that takes your fancy.

19. Indulge yourself at Hotel Emma

The real pearl of Pearl is the stunning Hotel Emma. Set in the main building of the old Pearl Brewing Company, it combines the extravagance of the iconic 19th century Brew House with the shirtsleeve industrial aesthetic of the brewery’s back rooms.

Stay in one of the boutique rooms, enjoy world-class cuisine at the Supper restaurant or simply pay homage to the building’s heritage by enjoying a beer (or a cocktail) at the Sternewirth bar. Perhaps in one of the old vats, refashioned into hip little hidey-holes for modern day drinkers.

20. Explore the iconic River Walk

Life in San Antonio has always revolved around the San Antonio River. Downtown, the city’s famous River Walk sits below street level, lined with lively bars and restaurants, shaded by venerable bald cypresses, and crossed over quaint stone arched bridges. It is a focal point when the city celebrates – the boat parade during the Day of the Dead, illuminations at various points of the year, boats full of carollers at Christmas.

It is best enjoyed from the river itself, on a Go Rio cruise, where entertaining guides reveal the city’s history with great knowledge and humor.

21. Sample chilli con carne at the source

In the late 1800s San Antonio’s plazas were famous for their ‘Chili Queens,’ local Mexican women doling out huge bowls of steaming chili con carne. The original inhabitants had always eaten a chili stew of sorts. But when the Spanish arrived with cattle, ‘chili’ had a ‘con carne’ (with meat) for the first time.

For real authentic chili con carne, head to the Four Brothers restaurant at the Omni La Mansion del Rio hotel. Made following a traditional recipe, it also comes with a huge serving of cornbread, baked in the shape of Texas.

22. Relive the Wild West at Briscoe Museum

Briscoe Western Art Museum is San Antonio’s newest museum, named in honor of the late Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe Jr. Set in the former San Antonio Public Library building, overlooking River Walk, it features nine galleries, each celebrating the art, history, and culture of the American West. Highlights include Pancho Villa’s saddle, a diorama of the Alamo, an authentic Chuck Wagon, and works by Frederic Remington and Taos Society of Artists.

23. Try a Reuben sandwich at Schilo’s Deli

Shilo’s has been proudly serving up Texan-German fare for over 100 years and is San Antonio’s oldest restaurant. You feel that history as soon as you walk in the door, in the patina of the serving counters and booths, and in the unashamedly old-fashioned menu items like meatloaf, wiener schnitzel, and a sausage platter, served with two sides and a choice of breads.

Its signature Rueben sandwich on a dark rye will keep you going all day. The iced coffees are divine too.

24. Be dazzled at America’s oldest cathedral

Head to San Antonio’s Main Plaza on any night other than Monday and you’ll be treated to The Saga, a breathtaking light show that depicts the discovery, settlement, and development of the city. The unique video art presentation is projected onto the majestic facade of San Fernando Cathedral – the oldest cathedral in the United States – and is the brainchild of French artist Xavier de Richemont.

The Saga debuted in 2014 and has become a must-see when visiting San Antonio. And a truly memorable introduction to the events and people that make it the city it is today.

Get a fantastic overview of the history, culture, and food of San Antonio with this 1.7-mile, self-guided free walking tour of Downtown San Antonio. Starting at The Alamo, it includes sites from the area’s earliest days under Spanish rule to a modern-day symbol of friendship between Mexico and the city of San Antonio.

One of my favorite ways to get acquainted with a new city is to take a walking tour. And with year-round highs between 60-90 deg F and a pedestrian-friendly downtown, San Antonio is the perfect destination for this type of introduction. 

This self-guided walking tour of Downtown San Antonio features ten stops that highlight the Alamo City, from the last remaining structure built to protect the San Antonio missions to a 65-foot contemporary sculpture. The walking tour begins at The Alamo, where paid parking spots are typically widely available.

This self-guided walking tour of Downtown San Antonio is a 1.7-mile clockwise loop that will take about 90 minutes to complete if you spend five minutes at each stop. But I definitely recommend lingering at the Downtown San Antonio attractions that interest you most.

1. The Alamo

With more than 1.5 million visitors a year, The Alamo is one of the most popular sights in the Lone Star State . Officially named Mission San Antonio de Valero, the beautiful limestone-walled compound is the most famous of San Antonio’s five Spanish missions due to the role it played in Texas’s independence from Mexico. 

Significantly outnumbered, a group of about 100 Texans barricaded themselves in the Alamo during the conflict and battled to the death against a Mexican army of thousands. After the tragic loss, General Sam Houston rallied the remaining Texas troops with the battle cry, “Remember the Alamo!” Just a few weeks after the devastating loss at the Alamo, Texas gained its independence from Mexico.

Sage Advice: One of my favorite ways to see all five San Antonio Missions is to catch a ride to Mission Espada, the southernmost mission in San Antonio, and then bike the San Antonio Mission Trail .

2. Menger Hotel

When you’re done exploring The Alamo, head south along N. Alamo Street. Your eyes will surely be drawn to the impressive Menger Hotel adjacent to the Alamo Plaza where horse-drawn carriages are often queued up in front of the sprawling limestone building with wrought iron balconies and striped awnings.

Step inside the 19th-century hotel where Renaissance-inspired columns rise from gleaming marble floors and the soaring three-story Victorian Lobby will make your jaw drop.

Let me tell you a bit about the German immigrant couple who established the Menger Hotel. He was a successful bachelor known as the “Beer King” because he established the first brewery in Texas and grew it into the state’s largest. She was a widow running a boarding house near his brewery. As newlyweds, they turned the small boarding house into a magnificent, two-story, fifty-room hotel. (Today the hotel boasts 316 guest rooms.)

Once known as the finest hotel west of the Mississippi, the Menger Hotel has welcomed many famous guests over its 160-year history. President Theodore Roosevelt stayed at the Menger during hunting excursions and when organizing the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War. Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum worked in a studio there, and Irish poet Oscar Wilde stayed at the Menger Hotel while touring the United States.

When you’re done exploring the hotel’s interior, step into the Tropical Garden, a lush, rectangular oasis just past the main lobby. More than a century ago, bison and other wild game were hung on the trees in the garden until the kitchen was ready to carve them into elegant dishes for guests. And the small pool in the garden was once home to live alligators that were allegedly given to hotel founders William and Mary Menger by a guest who considered them partial payment for an outstanding hotel bill. Today the quiet courtyard is filled with palm and banana trees, and the only wildlife you’ll likely see are birds.

Fun Fact: On the National Register of Historic Places, the Menger Hotel is apparently one of the most haunted hotels in America. More than 40 spirits allegedly hang out at the hotel, including the ghost of Sallie White, a young maid who died at the hotel, and Captain Richard King, a Texas rancher who also passed away there.

3. Torch of Friendship

As you continue south along N. Alamo Street, you’ll pass the Shops at Rivercenter just south of the Menger Hotel. And as you approach the intersection with E. Commerce Street, you’ll see the Torch of Friendship soaring 65 feet above the street. The ribbon-like crimson sculpture created by Mexican artist Sebastian is a gift to the city of San Antonio from Mexico.

Sage Advice: Much of this self-guided walking tour of Downtown San Antonio encircles the San Antonio River Walk. Watch for entry points and detour down a flight of stairs at any time along your journey to grab a bite at one of the waterfront restaurants or simply watch the colorful, flat-bottomed boats glide by.

4. La Villita Historic Arts Village

Shortly after you pass the Hilton Palacio del Rio on your right, take a right on Villita Street. Established in the early 1800s, La Villita was one of San Antonio’s first neighborhoods. Today, the 300-year-old architecture in this historic district with cobbled streets on the south bank of the San Antonio River is accented by art galleries and quaint restaurants. Browse the paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and other works from local and regional artists, or rest your feet while noshing on an appetizer or sipping a sexy coffee .

5. Tower Life Building (AKA Smith-Young Tower)

Continuing west along Villita Street, you’ll see the Tower Life Building at its intersection with S. St. Mary’s St. It’s impossible to miss the 30-story, octagonal brick building with a green terracotta roof and tall flag pole. While the skyscraper is considered art deco — after all, it does have gargoyle downspouts — I’d call it a low-key version, as its overall design is much more subdued than iconic art deco buildings like the Empire State Building , Chrysler Building, and Rockefeller Center in New York City.

Fun Fact: Originally known as the Smith-Young Tower, the Tower Life Building was the tallest building in San Antonio until 1968 when the Tower of the Americas shot past it for first place.

6. Bexar County Courthouse

Continuing west along Villita Street, you’ll run right into the Bexar County Courthouse. Constructed of red sandstone, with one of its towers capped by a pyramid-shaped, green tile roof, the largest and oldest continuously operated courthouse in Texas consumes an entire city block. This building was designed by local architect J. Riley Gordon, who masterminded more than 70 courthouses and public buildings across the country, including the Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix.

7. San Fernando Cathedral (AKA Church of Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria y Guadalupe)

About a block northeast of the Bexar County Courthouse stands one of the oldest cathedrals in the United States. This beautiful Romanesque Revival church with twin cross-topped bell towers has marked the city’s epicenter for nearly 300 years.  

Named for a 13th-century Spanish king who created a peaceful coexistence between Christians, Muslims, and Jews across the Spanish empire, the San Fernando Cathedral was founded by 15 families who arrived in San Antonio from the Canary Islands in the mid 1700s.

Visitors are welcome to enter the cathedral between 6:00 am to 6:00 pm daily. Don’t miss a chance to pay your respects to the heroes of the Alamo buried in a tomb inside the church. Also inside the church is a statue of Pope John Paul II in honor of the now canonized Catholic leader’s visit in 1987. Another notable sight is the carved baptismal font. Believed to be a gift from King Charles III of Spain, more than 900 new Catholics are christened in this carved basin each year.

Sage Advice: If you’d like to attend Mass at San Fernando Cathedral, services are held regularly throughout the week in both English and Spanish.

8. San Antonio City Hall

When you’re ready to continue the walking tour, slip through the narrow alley on the south side of the cathedral and cross Military Plaza to reach City Hall. The rectangular Italianate Renaissance Revival-style building at the center of Military Plaza is anchored by a turret at each corner.

9. Spanish Governor’s Palace

The next stop is the National Historic Landmark just west of City Hall. This cream-colored, single-story stucco building is known as the Spanish Governor’s Palace . It dates back to the mid-1700s and is the last structure of the Presidio San Antonio de Bexar, a fortress of sorts built to protect the missions of San Antonio. Like most Spanish-style buildings of the time, it’s C-shaped with a tiled patio and flower-filled courtyard built into the square space out back.

Sage Advice: When you visit the Governor’s Palace, look for the keystone carved above the front entrance. The double-headed eagle topped with a crown is the symbol of King Ferdinand VI of Spain. 

10. Buckhorn Saloon

To reach the last stop on this Downtown San Antonio walking tour, head north to W. Commerce Street and walk east four blocks to the San Antonio River. Once you’ve crossed the river, take the stairs down to the San Antonio River Walk and follow it east along the north bank to the Hyatt Regency San Antonio Hotel. At N. Presa St. hike up the stairs to the street level and travel north for one block.

The Buckhorn Saloon is part bar, part museum, and full of history. The walls of the main bar and restaurant are filled with animal mounts from around the world. With his seemingly at-odds interests in protecting wildlife and killing exotic animals (like rhinos and elephants), I wasn’t surprised to learn that Teddy Roosevelt enjoyed a drink or two here when he was recruiting his Rough Riders. And it’s rumored that Pancho Villa plotted the Mexican Revolution in the saloon.

To see more taxidermied exotic animals, purchase a ticket to the Buckhorn Museum. The red building with a Longhorn cow head protruding above the intersection of N. Presa and E. Houston Streets is also home to the Texas Ranger Museum . Inside you can view antique guns, historic photographs, and other artifacts that tell the story of the Texas Rangers and their role in shaping the Lone Star State.

To return to the Alamo, the starting point of this Downtown San Antonio walking tour, follow E. Houston Street two blocks east to N. Alamo Street and turn right.

I have to admit I dont know much about San Antonio, just a city in Texas for me. However I know about the Alamo so I would hit that up when I eventually visit Texas (and this would be a great education lesson for my children as well, I want them to know about American history as well as European history). I love the looks of the cathedral, so European and the light show on it looks amazing. Would love to check out this city now and walk freely. Mr Corona needs to go now so I can get back stateside.

Like most US cities, each town in Texas is truly unique. That said, San Antonio may be one of my favorite places in the Lone Star State!

I LOVE San Antonio! My brother used to live there, and we spent three Christmases in a row on the Riverwalk, which is just so magical! I think the only thing I haven’t done on this list is the Buckhorn Saloon. I bet my dad would have loved that Texas Ranger Museum! Maybe my family will make it back there someday and I can recommend that.

Did you use any app for this self-guided tour, or created it completely by yourself? I feel like there should be more apps helping us navigate in cities, but then again, my phone never has enough space to download these. And then, if they’d only work offline 🙂 What I typically do is I just mark locations I’m interested in on Google map for offline use, and then try to connect the dots by walking the best I can

I made this walking tour myself. It may sound nerdy, but I like to design walking tours or mural tours before I visit a city. It helps me learn about the history of a place and more before I go so I don’t miss anything. Then, I fill in the gaps when I get there!

I have been to San Antonio at least twice and sadly I dont remember either trip. The last time was back in 2003 when I was driving cross country back home from San Diego to New Orleans and we stopped off in San Anton to check out the Alamo. So I really need to get back. I am sure Darcee would love the Alamo but she would absolutely love hanging out at the Menger Hotel. She loves Victorian Decorations so that lobby sounds cool plus I am becoming more and more intrigued with Teddy Roosevelt. So that history of his rough riders there is intersting to me too! As for the Mass at San Fernando Cathedral, we love churches and it looks beautiful from the outside. Is it nice inside though? I find St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans is gorgeous outside but kind of boring inside. But the light show must be fun too.

I thought the San Fernando Cathedral was pretty inside. It’s definitely one of the oldest cathedrals in the United States (and it shows), but to me, that’s part of its charm. After all, no one wants to explore the brand new churches of Europe. They want to see the centuries-old ones!

I visited San Antonio years ago when my brother graduated from Air Force basic training there. I loved the River Walk, but didn’t know there were so many significant things to see.

I absolutely fell in love with San Antonio. And, there were a lot of Air Force graduates (and their families) when we visited!

Have never been to Texas. San Antonio seems to be a lovely town. I consider walking to be the best way of exploring a new town. From your San Antonio guide, I particularly liked the Alamo and the San Fernando Cathedral.

Although I dislike the reason why there are missions in the Americas, I still like to visit them. Most of the time, there are crazy and interesting stories behind those walls. However, my favorite building is Bockhorn Saloon – so beautiful and I bet the museum is interesting, too. I actually love self-guided tours. Although I might miss out on some historic detail, I prefer to visit at my own pace. Often, I only read later about what I’ve seen so that there is a lot of Ahaaa, so that was this and that 😀 – I know it’s not the smartest way of doing it 😉

The tableside guac at Boudro’s along the San Antonio River Walk is the most delicious guac on the planet! They actually publish their recipe — the secret ingredient is to use an orange for part of the citrus — and we’ve gotten to close making it at home. But that will be the absolute first place I visit first when I go back! 🙂
