Katmai Bear Viewing Tours
Join us for an unforgettable day tour to Brooks Falls and see the famous “fat bears” of Katmai National Park!
Whether you’ve yet to witness for yourself, odds are you recognize the iconic image of an Alaskan brown bear positioned on the edge of a waterfall in anticipation of catching an airborne salmon attempting to ascend the falls.
This is the site of Brooks Falls, the world’s most celebrated destination to view Alaskan brown bears in their natural habitat. It’s also only a short walk from our sister operation, Brooks Lodge .
Located in the heart of Katmai National Park (home to the highest concentration of protected brown bears on the planet), as many as fifty bears live along the mile and a half long Brooks River during the salmon season.
During the peak of the season, its not uncommon for visitors to see bears within minutes of arrival, and bears can also be observed from three elevated viewing platforms strategically located along the river.
Throughout the operating season, Katmai Air provides day tours to Brooks Lodge. Included in this tour is round trip air service between Anchorage and King Salmon aboard pressurized Pilatus PC-12 aircraft (approx. 1 hour), and float plane service between King Salmon and Brooks (approx. 20 mins). Upon arrival at Brooks, a hot buffet style lunch is also available for purchase at the lodge.

- Bev As a solo traveler I usually veer towards group tours and make my decisions based on ratings. Greatland Adventures definitely lived up to their high ratings and awesome reviews. I have booked several tours with them. From the beginning it was a pleasurable experience with Steve and Rochelle who have excellent communication with their clients and ensure you are fully accommodated for your tour. I did the northern lights tour with Mike who is an excellent guide! Very knowledgeable and he captured some excellent photos of me! I completed the glacier tour with Bill who is also very knowledgeable and ensured we had a great experience at the glacier by getting us there before others arrived and allowing us to safe explore all the accessible crevasses. I absolutely recommend this tour company they are amazing!
- Jane I want to sincerely applaud the members of Greatland Adventures! They made me and my friend's trip to Anchorage one of the most amazing experiences ever in our lives... We were all well educated about the lights before we got there and even had a chance to have a pitstop at a gas station to use the toilet and grab a coffee. We even saw the lights that night TWICE! Thank you, Steve! The memories we made will last a lifetime and we are so happy we chose Greatland Adventures. I am telling any and everyone that plans to visit Anchorage to book through them. No question!

Alaska Bear Viewing at Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park gives you the world famous views of Grizzly Bears catching wild salmon as they stand atop a waterfall. There is no picture quite like it. Brooks Falls bear viewing is the true definition of a wilderness destination. It is located in the heart of Katmai National Park in south west Alaska. This one of a kind bear habitat is sure to please whoever visits.
Alaska Bear Viewing Tour: Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park
Your Katmai Bear Viewing Adventure Begins when you depart Anchorage on one of our aircraft and head south along the Cook Inlet.
You will fly either directly to Katmai via floatplane or on our twin engine aircraft and then via floatplane to Brooks Falls. Both options take approximately 2.5 hours each way and offer much of the same sightseeing along the way. Either way once you land at Brooks you will get an equal amount of time on the ground to see the bears. (Approximately 4 hours)
Landing at Katmai you begin to see why Brown Bears choose to make this place their home. Salmon streams, mountain backdrops, large lakes, and thick forests surround you on this excursion. After getting out of the plane you will go through a quick bear orientation with one of the park rangers. From there it is off to explore this bear country. From the aircraft you will walk approximately 2 miles of easy walking through the park to a bear viewing platform which will provide you with shots of a lifetime of bears catching salmon as they make their way up Brooks Falls.
At Regal Air we utilize a variety of aircraft including wheeled aircraft and float aircraft to get to Brooks Falls, sometimes including a transfer. Regardless of your aircraft you will fly essentially the same route, fly in a floatplane upon arriving at Brooks Camp, arrive late morning approximately 11pm and have at least four hours on the ground, and arrive back at Anchorage sometime between 5pm and 7pm. In this way we are able to provide a very similar experience for all our guests while maximizing our fleet and the number of seats available to us.

What to bring: Sunglasses, bug spray, camera and binoculars. Dress comfortably and in layers; Alaska weather can change dramatically. A sunny and warm day in Anchorage can turn windy, rainy, and cool in the National Park. Please bring prescription medications.
Other information: Katmai National Park is in a remote area accessible only by plane so many of the common expectations of “civilization” are not available. You should bring essential medications with you and not plan plane connections on the same day of this trip. Additionally, if visiting Katmai is extremely important to you, please allow time in your schedule for possible rescheduling of this trip. Rust’s flies through two mountain passes to reach Katmai and this trip does sometimes cancel due to weather.
Departing from Lake Hood, Anchorage, fly over Cook Inlet, the Alaska Range, remote islands, before landing on either Brooks or Naknek Lake in Katmai National Park and Preserve. Katmai is home to the world’s largest population of Alaska brown bears and the famed Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes – a forty square mile, 100 to 700-foot deep ash flow deposited by Novarupta Volcano in 1912. It should be mentioned that the smokes smoked out many years ago and the few smoking vents are only visible in a relatively inaccessible part of the park.
The federally-protected Katmai National Park and Preserve is world famous for Alaska brown bear viewing. Accessible only by air, this is Alaska wilderness in its rawest form.
Our fly out Katmai bear viewing adventure takes you to Brooks Falls, where three bear viewing platforms connected by elevated boardwalks allow for close, unobstructed and extraordinary bear viewing in Katmai National Park. In July, lured by spawning salmon, as many as fifty bears can be seen at once along the 1.5-mile Brooks River.

What this means is that sometimes the bear viewing is crowded and the ranger may ask you to move to another platform. The is plenty of room in Katmai overall to see bears.
Please note: The activity level on this tour is considered mild to moderate as it requires walking on maintained trails to get to the two main viewing platforms. Total distance is approximately 1.2 miles. The trail is mostly flat and well maintained.

- Katmai National Park is home to North America’s largest protected population of brown bears, the valley of ten thousand smokes and is world renowned as the best rainbow trout and salmon fishing region. This Alaska tour is a once in a lifetime experience where you will get to see brown bears feed on wild Alaskan salmon or if you choose bring your fishing rod and indulge in do it yourself fishing, anyway you want enjoy the Brooks Falls bear viewing experience in Katmai.
- The Katmai Tour begins as you depart our Anchorage Aero office aboard one of our aircraft and embark on a scenic flight to Katmai National Park. Your flight path initially takes you southwest bound over Cook Inlet. Keep an eye out as there is often beluga whales spotted below. As your flight continues you'll pass several active volcanoes including Mt Spurr, Reboubt Volcano, Mount Iliamna and Augestine Volcano. Once approaching Katmai see one of the many beautiful watersheds which are the head waters to Bristol Bay including the Alagnak Wild River drainage. Annually all of these waters fill with salmon, bears and rainbow trout and you'll have the opportunity to see this en route to your bear viewing, fishing or sightseeing destination. Once you have arrived at Brooks Camp, a park ranger will provide a brief orientation to instruct you on proper (and safe) bear country etiquette you will now have the opportunity to visit the world famous Brooks Falls. While viewing brown bears feed, the friendly National Park Service rangers will gladly answer all of your questions about this incredible park. You will have a chance to see bears from several viewing platforms walking on the same trails as you, or even from the front porch of the Brooks Lodge while getting a snack.
- With our expert Katmai region experience we know all of the bear viewing and fishing locations but the premier destination is Brooks Falls (seasonal destinations may vary). During the month of July and again in September migrating salmon fill the Brooks River on the journey to complete their life cycle, come see this magical phenomenon.
Katmai National Park History
Formally known as Katmai National Monument, Katmai National Park and Preserve was proclaimed a National Monument in 1918 after the eruption of Novarupta (now known as the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes). In 1950, the National Park Service stationed a full-time ranger in the park and began construction on Brooks Camp ranger station; that original building is now the Visitors Center.
Tourism increased dramatically in the 1950's after aviation pioneer, Raymond Petersen, established several camps around the Katmai region. In the beginning, most visitors were sport fishermen but as word spread of Katmai’s brown bears during the 1980’s, the Brooks River became a popular wildlife viewing destination.
It is estimated that there are around 2,200 bears in Katmai National Park, with the total number of bears exceeding the population of people on the entire Alaska Peninsula. However, there is an unusually high concentration of brown bears around rivers from July to September as they congregate to feed on spawning salmon, making Brooks Falls bear viewing tours the perfect trip for seasonal adventurers.

BVAN01 Katmai – Brooks Falls Bear Viewing Day Tour from Anchorage
- end: Anchorage
- map/image selection: Image
Watching bears in the wild is one of the most fascinating natural spectacles. Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park is a perfect place to see bears. There are almost 2000 brown bears in this area and the chance of seeing them is particularly high in July and September when the bears come to catch salmon on the fish rich river. One salmon after the other the skilled hunters fish from the river and often they only have to open their mouths to catch one of the jumping salmon. A real feast for the bears and a joy to watch. From Anchorage you fly to King Salmon or Kulik and continue by seaplane to Brooks Camp. From the lodge you can reach the spectacular viewing platforms in a few minutes, from where you have a perfect view of Brooks Falls and bears.

Sarah, NY: Our family extended our stay in Anchorage specifically to visit Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park. We flew on a floatplane out of Anchorage. The flight is long but enjoyable and we ended up having 4-5 hours in Katmai. Brooks Falls was a tremendous experience. The brown bears were actively feeding on salmon in the Falls and we could observe from a nearby platform. The park rangers were very helpful and informative. Check out one of the active webcams especially during the month of July. Truly one of the highlights of a great trip.

A full-day bear viewing trip like no other, this tour departs from the Lake Hood Seaplane Base in Anchorage. The flight path traces over the Cook Inlet, alongside the volcanoes of Lake Clark National Park, and across two mountain passes in the southernmost expanse of the Alaska Range. The pilot provides narration intermittently throughout the flight, pointing out landmarks and chatting about local area features and history. The two- to three-hour flight ends with a water landing on either Lake Brooks or Naknek Lake.
See some of Alaska's largest bears.
The first step after arriving in Katmai is attending the park's required bear safety orientation. Park rangers discuss bear behavior and detail the regulations in place to keep both bears and people safe. From here, it's just over a mile from the visitor center to the popular Falls Platform. An established trail winds through birch and spruce trees, passing through gates meant to deter bears, although seeing one ambling down the trail is not impossible. The subtle rushing sound of the river gets louder until a network of raised platforms comes into view. One path forks to the Riffles Platform, the other to the platform overlooking Brooks Falls.
Brown bears congregate in this natural bottleneck, staking out choice spots to fish and feast. These are some of Alaska's largest bears, fattened by an abundance of salmon. They wade in the clear water, plopping down in swirling rapids, and plunking their faces for a look below the surface. The platforms are close enough to see water trickling off their brown coats and the twitch of their noses as they sniff at the air. Occasionally a sow will come into view, trailed by spring or yearling cubs. Time can flash by in this mesmerizing setting, so keep a close eye on a watch. The trip concludes with a scenic flight back to Anchorage.
The chances of seeing bears in Katmai National Park are good but not guaranteed. July typically offers the best opportunities. Time spent on the ground at the park is self-guided. Because of the popularity of Katmai bear viewing and a relatively small falls viewing area, Katmai National Park Rangers may institute an onsite wait list at the Lower River platform to control the number of people and amount of time they spend there. This ultimately enhances the bear viewing experience. A new Brooks River bridge was installed in 2019 to help with congestion.
Flights between Anchorage and Katmai can sometimes be delayed or canceled due to weather. This is a remote location and the flight path goes through two mountain passes. Do not schedule this tour on the same day as a departure from Anchorage. On the day of the trip, prepare to be flexible as the tour operator adjusts to ensure the safest experience possible.
What to Bring
Much of the excursion is spent outside, so dress in layers, wear sturdy hiking boots that can get muddy, and take rain gear. Bring a camera, binoculars, and bug spray. As Katmai is an isolated location only accessible by plane, bring essential medications as well.
Special Instructions
Accurate passenger weight is required for aircraft weight and balance.
