What to expect during a Mekong Delta Cruise

The Mekong River, which flows into Vietnam, actually starts 4000 kilometers further up in China and runs through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. This makes it the twelfth longest river in the world and the sixth in Asia. Once in Vietnam, the river splits to form a delta, which everyone knows as the Mekong Delta . The rivers are connected with canals, which are then connected with smaller streams.

The people who live in this delta area have completely adapted to the water and their whole lives revolve around this. For example, the water is used for fishing, it provides fertile soil that is perfect for fruit and rice cultivation and the harvested crops are then transported over the water and even sold on floating markets. It is a unique life that you can only see in this part of Vietnam.

Of course, the best way to see this is to take part in getting out on the water. You can arrange a boat trip from every village and city that lies along the water that takes you over the rivers and through the narrower canals. But what might give a much more fantastic experience is a Mekong Delta cruise.

Because how wonderful it is to be able to watch life along and on the water directly from the balcony of your room, the restaurant or the deck. You have luxury Mekong Delta cruises to midrange cruises. But in addition to the class of the cruise, it is important to look at the cruise itinerary, as each cruise may travel a different route and visit different points of interest.

It is true that during a Mekong Delta cruise you can of course enjoy beautiful views directly from the boat, but most boat trips include trips with activities such as visiting villages, cycling and boat trips in small traditional sampan rowing boats that take you to places get where the big boat can’t. Check out some of these Mekong Delta cruise highlights below to better orient yourself on what to see and do, making it easier to determine which river cruise is right for you.

Highlights of a Mekong Delta cruise

1. floating markets.

For many travelers, the floating markets in the Mekong Delta are the highlight. The many fruit orchards and rice plantations that line the water load their crops directly from a land into the boats in the rivers and canals. Then those boats go to a collection point to trade with each other, creating a floating market, sometimes hundreds of boats. It is unique to see how they negotiate and move goods from one boat to another and then distribute them further. The largest and most famous market on the water is the Cai Rang Floating Market .

2. Life on the river

When you take a river cruise with Mekong Delta, you can see life on the water directly from your boat. What will stand out the most are the many other ships that are fully loaded with local products. You will see boats full of pineapples, watermelons, coconuts, bananas, sand, bricks and flowers, among other things.

Along the side of the water you will see the ships being loaded. Fishermen sit on smaller boats on the river and use rods and casting nets to catch their fish. Some villages and towns even have houses on stilts in the water.

3. Stop for activities

Of course you can see a lot directly from a Mekong Delta river cruise, but there is also a chance that you will miss something that does not happen directly along the river. For that reason, most cruises also organize activities on the mainland (included). Think, for example, of visiting a fruit orchard where you can pick and taste fruit yourself, a bike ride through the countryside and visiting a local factory or workshop where they make rice paper, honey, rice wine or coconut sweets. This way you have the best of both a Mekong Delta cruise and a “normal” Mekong Delta tour.

5x Best Mekong Delta cruise

1. funan cruise.

Funan Mekong Delta Cruise

The best Mekong Delta Cruise is the luxury Funan cruise. Depending on which day you go there are different routes. You can visit the Cai Rang floating market and there are opportunities for cycling and visiting villages.

Book this luxury Mekong Delta cruise here.

2. Lotus Cruise (to Phnom Penh)

Lotus Mekong Delta Cruise

Are you planning to go from Vietnam to Cambodia (or vice versa) through the Mekong Delta and you like luxury, a lot of luxury, then the Lotus Cruise is the best Mekong Detla cruise you can wish for.

3. Song Xanh Sampan Private Cruise

Song Xanh Sampan Private Mekong Delta Cruise

Perhaps the Song Xanh Sampan is the best Mekong Delta cruise, as it is one of the only options for a private cruise. The boat is made of a traditional Sampan boat and fully equipped. This is certainly a very special experience.

4. Mekong Eyes

Mekong Eyes

Mekong Eyes has a number of boats with different routes, including to Cambodia, Phu Quoc or a round trip from Ho Chi Minh City. Some of their boats are slightly smaller, which makes a boat trip a little more personal, only there is less room to move and for facilities.

Bassac Mekong Delta cruise

The Bassac Cruise has room for 24 passengers and sails the popular route between Cai be and Can Tho on the Mang Thit River where you have the Tra On Floating Market .

Best time to do a Mekong Delta river cruise

You can do a Mekong Delta cruise all year round, although there are two clear seasons:

  • The rainy season lasts from May to November. So you can expect less pleasant weather during this time, but the water is also higher in some places, making it easier for boats to get everywhere.
  • The dry season lasts from December to April. In these months the water is lower in some places, but you can expect clear blue skies.

Regardless of the season, the Mekong Delta is warm (or hot for some people) all year round. Expect temperatures between 25 degrees and 32 degrees.

How many days should I take a Mekong Delta river cruise?

Most Mekong Delta cruise trips last two to three days, which is enough to get a good impression. An overnight stay also gives you the chance to visit a morning-only floating market, making it impossible to see in a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City.

Do Mekong Delta cruises start from Ho Chi Minh City?

Most Mekong Delta cruises do not depart directly from Ho Chi Minh City. In general, you first go by car or bus to the port somewhere in the Mekong Delta, usually My Tho.

What are the alternatives for a Mekong Delta cruise?

With the Mekong Delta speedboat tour you go directly from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta. It’s a great option because you won’t be driving for more than an hour or sometimes two on the road at first, but can enjoy the great outdoors and riverside life from the very first moment.

There are also plenty of other tours where you first start with a car or bus from Ho Chi Minh City. The excursions can also take you to places that are further away from the river and can even be combined with a follow-up trip to Cambodia, Con Dao or Phu Quoc. Mekong River Delta Cruise – A Day Trip from Ho Chi Minh City

Posted by Nomad Girl | Mar 16, 2016 | Asia

Mekong River Delta Cruise – A Day Trip from Ho Chi Minh City

Mekong River Delta Cruise One Day Tour – Vietnam

The Mekong River Delta cruise experience: A few hours drive from Ho Chi Minh City , this waterway and its 39,000 sq km surround remains one of the most densely populated parts of the country. Another world almost, where schools, markets and whole villages float on life-sustaining manmade islands. A Mekong River Delta Cruise allows you to experience and enjoy this unique part of the world.

One Day Trip from Ho Chi Minh City

Mekong river cruise: what to expect. I found it easiest to experience the Mekong Delta on a Mekong river cruise, from  Ho Chi Minh City , that included a pleasant 2-hour bus ride (they drive extremely slow in Vietnam ) south towards My Tho, passing by paddy ride fields, fruit plantations (lots of pineapples) and many individual graves in the middle of rice fields (it is a tradition for farmers to be buried on their farms).

Mekong River Cruise – Tour Includes

My Mekong River Cruise included motorboat rides in the Mekong, and stops along the way to islands including Dragon Island, Unicorn Island, Phoenix Island and Turtle Island. At Unicorn Island, our tour group was able to go in rowboats through the green canals. We also visited a tropical fruit orchard on the island, a beekeeping farm, and a handmade coconut candy workshop, where we got to taste the produce at each stop.

It was really nice to see all the different types of plants and fruits growing in the orchard, that I would not typically be exposed to in Australia , and I have to put in a special mention to the coconut candy workshop, this part of the Mekong river cruise was very delightful.

Mekong River Cruise – Lunch Provided

Mekong River Cruise Food : The tour on the Island ended with a lunch at the small restaurant and some exploring around the island area. Being a vegan I had no problem with lunch, the tour guide asked if there were any special requests at the beginning of the tour, and when we arrived at the restaurant at the end of the tour my lunch was sitting aside ready.

It's great when this happens so fuss-free. I would assume that most Mekong River Cruise Companies cater to many food and allergy requirements due to the huge numbers of people that take part in their tours and meet the needs of everyone. (I might just add, peanuts are a very popular snack food in Vietnam, as they are in most parts of Southeast Asia, and I did notice many people eating them on buses and boat trips throughout my time in Vietnam).

Mekong River Cruise – Getting Back to Ho Chi Minh City

The Mekong River Cruise that I went on, and other similar tours, to My Tho – Ben Tre are a full day. Most Mekong River Cruise companies (and there are many) offer pick up from your accommodation at 7:30 am and do not arrive back to Ho Chi Minh City until around 7 pm that night. The tour cost was 190.00 VND per person and included the bus trip, tour guide, boat rides, canoe rowboat rides, water, fruit, and full lunch.

Mekong Delta Cruise – Ticket Sales

All travel agents around the Pham Ngu Lao area will offer this tour, as well as other shorter or longer overnight tours, all for varying prices. There are one-day trips to Cai Be or My Tho, two-day trips to Can Tho and Cai Rang, and three-day trips as far as Chau Doc, as well as combination trips (boat and bus) to Phnom Penh .

Mekong Delta Cruise – Shop Around

It usually works best to ask around a couple of travel agents, grab a few information sheets detailing the different trips and choose the one best suited to your time frame over dinner 🙂 I found the one day trip enough, as these trips although exciting, interesting and informative, are very long days with a combination of heat, sun and bus travel I find slightly exhausting.

Final Thoughts

My final words. The Mekong Delta is breathtakingly grand, powerful, full of culture and life, and must not be missed when in Vietnam. Going on a Mekong river cruise is not only inexpensive but a rich experience that I would not have been able to take part in without a tour company run river cruise.

Mekong Delta River Cruise – Day Trip from Ho Chi Minh City

Getting to the ‘River of Nine Dragons’

The Mekong Delta, meaning the “River of Nine Dragons” is an area in South West Vietnam, where numerous canals and rivers meet the mighty waterway of the Mekong River.

Graves in the middle of rice fields

Graves in the middle of rice fields

We took an early morning day trip from Saigon and were driven south to towards Ben Tre where our Mekong Delta trip would start. Getting there was a long journey, over 3 hours but nevertheless interesting looking out the windows as the countryside gets more tropical and lush. We passed lots of rice fields which had graveyards right in the middle of the fields. It’s a Vietnamese tradition to keep their ancestors close to them. Remembrance is very important part of their culture the graves are also positioned centrally in fields to bring their crops good luck.

Floating fishing village on the Mekong

The Mekong River starts at the Tibetan Plateau passing through a total of six countries to the South China Sea in Vietnam, it’s the longest river in South East Asia.

Mekong River Trip

Mekong_Delta_getting_to_the_boat

At the small town of Phú Hưng (south of My Tho) we boarded what can only be described as an industrial open top tuk tuk that whisked us on a bumpy ride through the countryside to where our boat was waiting. We both kept getting whacked by large banana plant leaves!

On the way to the river we passed all sorts of interesting things, Garth spotted this propaganda poster, you can’t escape these communist messages even in the remote countryside. We passed loads of children on their bikes heading home after school who were so friendly shouting ‘hello’ and ‘what is your name’ to us, obviously keen to practice their English.

We had no expectations what our boat would be like, so it was a welcome surprise how luxurious it was!  It was just the 4 of us and our guide for the day, perfect apart from the temperature which was ridiculously hot so our conical hats and and extra shade were essential for the day. We set off down a small canal where we would join the Mekong River Delta and make various stops along the way.

The Mekong has the appearance of chocolate milk and is just like a motorway there’s lots of activity here where boats zip up and down filled with all sorts from coconuts and fruit to building materials. Some of the barges and sampan boats were so heavily laden, their produce was almost touching the water!

Making Bricks

So when we were told our first stop was to visit a brick factory, we weren’t exactly full of enthusiasm, but it turned out to be quite a fascinating visit.

Bricks are made from clay dug from bottom of Mekong, put into machine to make blocks and dried in the sunshine. A massive walk-in kiln fired by the husks from rice is used for fuel, it looks like sawdust. The kiln is then bricked up and the fire lit, the bricks are cooked for 10 -20 days.

Charcoal was also made here by burning coconut husks. The coconuts were bagged up and sold on, every part was used, nothing was wasted.

Snacks in the jungle

Phil and Garth on our bikes

Further down the Mekong another stop where we got on our bikes and cycled through the dense jungle to see some Delta villages in the countryside.  It was great fun cycling along village lanes, passing sugar cane groves and fruit orchards we saw exotic looking things growing like dragon fruit, jackfruit and pomelos. The jungle paths were lined with coconut and banana trees with massive leaves we kept having to avoid, but thankfully the Mekong Delta area is nice and flat.

Snacks in the jungle

Time for some jungle snacks! Hot tea and fruit that we dipped in a chilli and shrimp shavings dip, such a weird combination, it tasted like it sounds, let’s say an acquired taste!  Our guide told us locals love this as a daytime snack. We loved how they used an empty coconut shell to keep the kettle hot.

Rice bowl of Vietnam

Rice noodle factory

Rice noodle factory

The Mekong Delta area has miles of flat flood plains, where the land is fertile, rich in nutrients making the region the most prolific in the country for agriculture. They can have 4 rice harvests annually and the region produces 60% of Vietnam’s rice needs, that’s why it’s often referred to as “the rice bowl of Vietnam.”

We visited a rice factory to see how rice noodles are made.

Rice noodle factory

Rice sheets dried on bamboo racks

The process starts with rice and water mixed and left for days to create a sticky rice paste. The rice mixture was then passed through a machine that rolled it into sheets and cut into 3 metre lengths. The sheets are then dried on racks. Now we finally know where the pattern you see on rice paper comes from – it’s the bamboo racks.

Racks outside where the rice paper is dried in the sunshine

Racks outside where the rice paper is dried in the sunshine

The racks are left to dry in the sunshine, and finally put through a paper shredding machine to create the long noodles, this factory made 500 1kg bags a day. What struck us was how basic the factory was and that it must be back breaking work using these traditional methods of production with no modern machines. Phil thought the hygiene seemed questionable, but suppose ultimately it’s all cooked.

Cottage Industries

We then cycled to a rural home to meet a family and discover more about their life. It was quite a privilege seeing inside their modest home and meeting the husband and wife team who earn a living with their cottage industry of making crispy rice paper cakes. They served us hot tea and gave us a rice cake to try, such nice hospitality.

We then watched the mum make her paper cake, before letting us have a go! Phil really enjoyed it, because he loves cooking and trying new things, it was so unexpected getting to try it out for ourselves, Phil was told he did a better job than Garth – Obvs!

The rice paper cakes are then dried on large racks, finally cooked over a grill and then taken to local markets to sell.

Tropical Canals

Boarding a small boat

Boarding a small boat

The most picturesque part of our Mekong Delta trip was the short sampan boat trip back to our main boat. We got to cruise down a narrow canal with some gorgeous tropical scenery as the overhanging palms create tunnels. It was a real highlight of our day, just relaxing in silence whilst looking out for various wildlife on the waters edge.

Lessons in Vietnamese

Lessons in Vietnamese

On the way back to Saigon our guide passed the journey time by giving us lessons in Vietnamese which was fun. Look at how many different ways they spell the same word Ma – they all have completely different meanings, which means it’s very easy to offend someone without the correct pronunciation!

It was an unforgettable and unique day trip, despite the long transfer times, we so were glad we did it as the area we visited was authentic and unspoilt by tourism. The Mekong Delta was also the perfect way to end our grand tour of Vietnam, we’d been so luck to see so many different sides to Vietnam from the street food of Hanoi , war-torn Hue , colourful  Hoi An , dramatic landscapes of Ha Long Bay  to the motorbike honking streets of Ho Chi Minh City . Vietnam gave us a slice of life that was completely different to our own, that we’ll remember and reflect upon, it easily ranks as one of our best holidays!

Phil and Garth’s Top 5 Mekong Delta Tips

Phil and Garth on the Mekong Delta

Phil and Garth on the Mekong Delta

  • Tip #1: Be prepared for heat and lack of shade, so take your hat and drink plenty of bottled water.
  • Tip #2: If you’re prepared to leave Saigon early at 5am go see the big floating markets of Can Tho or  Cai Be.
  • Tip #3: Take a spare memory card, as there’s tons of photo opportunities here!
  • Tip #4: Do try all the local food – what have you go to lose?
  • Tip #5: Best time to go is winter November – February, it’s dry and still very hot.

What company did you book this through? It looks amazing!

Hi Kadre we booked it with InsideAsia Tours, hope you get to visit too 🙂

Reading this post reaffirms that this was the main part of Vietnam i missed on my trip there. While I did cross the Mekong a few times, visiting the delta looks like fun and floating down it looks great. I thought you had to do it as a 2 day trip so was surprised that you did it in 1. That’s good to hear for those with precious time.

Sounds like a super trip. I love the fact you bring your inspirational journey to life with words, photos and video.

Such a lovely insight into the daily life in Mekong. As usual, love your photography. The dining hall at the Mango Home riverside looks cute!

Guys, it seems like you had a great time on Mekong delta. I love all your posts about Vietnam and I am seriously thinking to spend the Christmas and nye in there. The pictures are gorgeous as usual, you managed to do so many interesting things and learn more about the culture from the locals.

' src=

First of all I must say all your photos are incredible, I love how detailed they are, it’s almost like being on the Mekong Delta. Important tip about water and wearing a hat, I think I’d go for a typical Vietnamese hat whilst out there! The Vietnamese language lesson must have been an interesting experience too.

' src=

Wow what an amazing trip! The Mekong Delta was one of the things that I didn’t get to do when I was in Vietnam but really wanted to. It looks like a really cultural experience and an opportunity to learn so much. Thanks for sharing!

' src=

That coconut water must have been so refreshing since it was so hot out on the boat. The water looks exactly like chocolate milk, great description! I will definitely be adding these to my list, especially that amazing rice noodle factory. Love it!

Special Features Mekong Eyes Cruise

The Mekong Eyes Classic combines regional boat-building traditions with modern comforts to become the perfect holiday vessel to cruise the Mekong Delta in style. At 39 m long and 8.5 m wide, the Mekong Eyes river cruiser was built out of an old, traditional rice barge with the finest quality wood, and artfully decorated by skilled craftsmen of the Mekong Delta.

Why the name Mekong Eyes? — One of the traditional ceremonies performed on a newly constructed Mekong boat is the “eye opening”. The eyes are painted on the bow for good luck, a wide-awake crew and fast and safe journeys. The river cruise boat can comfortably accommodate up to 28 passengers on a large area of approx. 250 m2, it’s like a floating hotel:

There are   14 lavishly furnished twin and double rooms , each with a private bathroom with shower and hot water, wardrobe and air-conditioning. All rooms offer a fantastic panoramic view over the Mekong River.

There is a   large dining room   in the lower deck, where you can enjoy culinary specialities of Vietnam or a sundowner in the   cosy bar .

A stylish upper-deck   inside panorma lounge   invites you to sit back and take in the impressions of the fantastic scenery and the busy every day life on the river.

On the top deck you will find an   open sitting area and sun deck   with breathtaking views. While you are basking on the sun deck our friendly staff will pamper you with cool drinks and freshly cooked delicacies.

Our  crew  will do their utmost to provide you with all the services and comfort you need during your Mekong Delta cruise. The captain and his deck hand as well as the engineer are in charge of the technical details and the routing. An experienced chef and sevice staff will take you on a culinary journey through Vietnam. A local guide will explain the life and culture of the Mekong Delta to you and answer any questions you might have. Our staff also get regular safety trainings.

The floating markets in the Mekong Delta are no tourist markets but wholesale markets where produce of the Mekong Delta like fruits and vegetables are traded. For this reason the number of boats on the market fluctuates depending on harvesting seasons and market demand. Furthermore, modern wholesale markets are becoming more popular in Vietnam. This can result in decreasing numbers of boats being present on the markets.

  5.0 - Excellent

I have used these guys a number of times over the last years for various guests visiting in HCMC. They are always outstanding. The overnight cruises are wonderful and the day trips to Mekong are fantastic. My daughter and two friends just came back from a day trip to Mekong which included the boat trip, visiting a local family, cooking lessons a cycling trip and more - cant recommend this company more

Love the Mekong Eye Cruise. We cruised the Mekong delta in October. This was the low season. On board there was only 12 tourists. It made for an intimate friendly group where you could sit and talk to people. The hospitality of the staff was excellent. They couldn't do enough for us. The scenery was amazing. The Delta is a busy shipping area from fishing, to dredging, to cruising, to cargo and not to forget the floating market.

MEKONG DELTA BOAT OVERNIGHT CRUISE

' itemprop=

Mekong Delta is a basin made by silt which Mekong River has brought from Himalaya and pours into the sea. That huge flat area is then extremely fertile and great for cultivation and planting. Famed as the rice bowl of Vietnam, it is home to a complex system of distributaries and is dotted with countless rice fields, fruit orchards, handicraft villages and floating markets. Along with the fertility in nature is the diversity in the lifestyle and etiquette. Then the discovery of two days can help to exposure more the charm of the land.

More than that, the trip will have one night stay overnight on the boat with private carriage, among the Mekong countryside sound, smell, with great food served and local daily life over the window.

The tour is a real penetration into the green color of water coconuts, the big river, the maze of canals, and especially the daily life of Mekong people.

Less moving and more time on boats will bring you the feeling of catching up all local daily life, especially in Mekong where two thirds of transportation is made by boat and all houses make canals the main traffic way. Less transferring among buses, boats, restaurants, hotels, sightseeing also bring you freedom on enjoying the scene passing by your window. Just sit down and do that with a cup of tea, among the sunset and sunrise of mighty Mekong Delta.

We will stay overnight on wooden or metal boats with well-equipped cabin among twelve nicely decorated ones of that, with air-con and a private bathroom, with a 500 sqft restaurant that opens all around, and 1500 sqft of upper deck mostly covered.

Depend on the boat schedule and our drop off and pick up points can vavy. Please see the following starting -ending point.

The tour cost is with inclusions of transportation, guide, boats, entrance fees, twin sharing rooms,  1 special lunch and 1 dinner when you are on board.

The tour starts from 8:00 AM this day and last until around 6:00 PM of the following.

Mekong cruise Vietnam

  • Exotic cruise along the Mekong river system with private room in a wooden ship.
  • Peaceful ambiance on board among landscape of ricefields, shaded coconut tree woods,  orchards and working farmers along the river banks, local boats with fruit transportation going back and forth
  • Many star life on board with convenient facilities, professional crew, and great food.
  • Floating market right out of your room window, and from the smaller boat

Mekong Delta Chau Doc rice field

DAY 1: SAIGON –CAN THO

Meet you tour guide in your hotel around 8:00 AM and take a 180 minute drive to the Bassac branch of Mekong river, across the endless green color of rice paddy field stretching to the horizon.

Start boarding at Ninh Kieu pier in Can Tho city at noon, get welcomed by the friendly crew, get introduction of  the ship and then check into the cabins. Departure downstream of the Bassac River and tour near Tra On floating market . Lunch on board en route.

Enjoy more daily life as the ship turn into smaller canal  towards the Mang Thit and Co Chien Rivers, the branches of Mekong river system. Rest on the upper deck or enjoy the open bar in scenery of rice fields, sugar cane, woods on the near banks.

Change the atmosphere by making a visit to a village on the banks of river Mang Thit, an opportunity to appreciate the way of life and hospitality of the local inhabitants. Make further walking into the orchard or rice fields nearby.

Get back to the boat, refresh by a complimentary drink. Open bar and rest on the deck enjoying the sunset. The crew will serve dinner while the ship is cruising Mang Thit River towards her anchorage point for the night. The ship sets anchored for the night on river Mang Thit.

Mekong-cruise-Vietnam luxury

DAY 2: CAI BE –SAIGON

Early birds can get sunrise at the upper deck. The passengers take their breakfast while enjoying the scenery on the banks when the ship departures towards Cai Be. The cruise changes your view as turning left and right into small canals then big rivers then small canals. The view is not only the daily life along the river and canal banks, but also the small boats of the local people with boat full of fruits on the way to the market.

As the ship arrives in Cai Be, make check-out of your ship and board of a local boat for a tour of Cai Be floating market and handicraft to have even more close-up to this stunning view of boat world.

Make drive back to Saigon in the afternoon.

Mekong river cruise review

"Outstanding Service"

Could not have been more pleased with the outstanding service offered by Hong Nham with Inside Travel . We booked a Mekong river Cruise on the Jahan Cruise with Heritage Line and Hong was efficient, timely, courteous, and exceptionally competent. All of our questions with regards to timings and visas came, sometimes without even being asked. What an absolute pleasure to deal with someone so knowledgable and capable. Pricing was also the best compared with other agencies. Highly and strongly recommend for all travels within southeast Asia. Ms. Jane Adams-Roy & Family - CANADA

"The best trip we've ever taken - absolutely incredible"

Thank you, Ms. Hanh Do. The Mekong river Cruise we booked with InsideTravel was probably the best trip we've ever taken. The Mekong and Tonle River cruise was absolutely incredible and the people of Vietnam and Cambodia are still in our minds, a couple weeks after returning home. We will definitely be recommending the trip, and InsideTravel, to our friends and colleagues. We have produced a video which summarizes our trip and have been distributing the link to our friends, family, and colleagues. You can view this video at http://youtu.be/fFgvqwgIvII . Once again, Thank you so much. Mr. Ryan LeClaire - UNITED STATES

"It was wonderful"

The staff aboard our Gecko eyes houseboat were amazing, the crew were rarely seen which gave us a real feeling of privacy & solitude which was so nice. When we did see them they were polite & very friendly. Our guide Dat was such a wonderful guy, he made everything so easy was so attentive to our every need. Dat even made a short movie for us of our experience which was such a nice touch & shows how attentive he was to our every need. The side tours were well organised & fun, Dat was very mindful of the heat & ensured that our comfort was well looked after with regards to the ground tours. The bike riding was such a high light.& the walking tour around the village was also great fun. Overall it was a wonderfull experience & I do thank you for upgrading us to one of your private houseboats... Thanks again for such a wonderful trip!!! Mr. Steven Moran - AUSTRALIA

"A fascinating insight into Cambodia"

My husband and I spent four days of our honeymoon on board the Jahan cruise , travelling from Siem Reap down to Phnom Penh, and we couldn't recommend it highly enough. The ship itself was beautiful, and the cabin very comfortable and spacious with its own private balcony. There were plenty of excursions and activities, all of which were very informative and the sort of thing we wouldn't have been able to do travelling under our own team, and our guide was excellent. Moreover, the crew were exceptional - and the food delicious. Thank you very much for your support! Mrs. Rachele Pipe - UNITED KINGDOM

"Mekong river experience and absolutely fabulous"

Family of 3 and very happy to have choosen this company while all was perfect. Food quality and choice, staff excellence, knowledge of the trip and service orientated! "Great experience"

The Mekong river cruise boat trip was great...from start to finish. The off-boat activities included programs for all ages. Not boring and not too long. We were traveling with kids (11 and 15), who also found the programs to be very interactive. Food was great, service, etc. Looking forward to our next trip, thank you so much for your excellent services!!! Mr. James Jacobson - UNITED STATES

You will be collected from your hotel at 7:30 am ready to begin our amazing adventure. Our first stop is the Cai Be Pier along the mighty Mekong River. Sit back and relax as our ‘sampan’ (a traditional motorised boat) takes you along the serene canals. These hidden waterways are engulfed in lush vegetation and local villages where you can admire the colours and culture alike.

Next up, we get back on the dry land of the Tan Phong island. After a quick stop off at a tasty fruit orchard, we will experience the enchanting music of Vietnam as guests of a local performance and take a guided bicycle tour of this marvellous island. Along the way, we will visit native families and learn how these locals use the land to craft everything from delicate rice paper to the sturdy roofs of their homes. A local family will treat us to Mekong delicacies for lunch which include freshly made spring rolls, fried pumpkin flower, and beautifully braised pork soaked in coconut juice

** We can provide accommodation for those with scooters**

After our special Mekong lunch, we’ll transfer back to our boat and into the smaller canals of the delta. Here we can get up close and be a part of the daily life of local people and farmers. We will see the handicraft of local merchants preparing delicious coconut candy, rice-wine, unique hand-crafted pottery, and bricks made from scratch. Then we’ll head to the Vinh Long Pier and market where you can see even more of the specialities the Mekong has to offer.

Finally, we will board the bus to drive to Chau Doc to reach your accommodation. Once we arrive we can head out for dinner at the marvellous night market or you can have some time to relax at your chosen hotel.

This morning we will check out early ready for a scenic drive to the amazing Tra Su Mangrove Forest. At this peaceful, tranquil location we will pass through canals in the forest, to observe wading birds. Prepare to be dazzled by this enchanting place, filled with mossy green waterways lined with beautiful cajuput trees. Keep your eyes out for some of the amazing wildlife that abounds here including birds of paradise and storks.

After Tra Su, we will drive to visit the impressive Ba Chua Xu temple set at the foot of the Sam Mountain. Once we have completed our visit here we will take a unique Xe Loi bicycle rickshaw trip through the surrounding villages. We will end at Ba Sa fish square before driving to Can Tho for our overnight stay. Once we arrive there, we will drive you to your chosen hotel. If you’re still energetic enough to see and do more, we’ll take a visit to a local night market!

large temple surrounded by manicured trees and flowers

On day three we’ll get up early and head straight out to make the most of the day. We’ll board our own private boat to head to Cai Rang, the biggest floating market in the whole of Asia. You will get to experience local produce being sold first-hand from boat to boat. You’ll get the chance to buy products of your own and you can even sip your morning coffee at one of the awesome floating coffee shops.

After the market, we will head back to the hotel for some well-deserved breakfast. Having checked out, we’ll head to My Tho to visit the breathtaking Vinh Trang pagoda. Here your guide will show you around the incredible five-acre site. After what promises to be an interesting and enjoyable day, we’ll head back to Ho Chi Minh City and drop you back to your accommodation.

I now refer my friends, family and colleagues, as well as book all of my tours, accommodation and flights with Maika because I feel very lucky to have finally found an organisation in Asia that gives me the confidence to do so.

The tour was very well organized, and the guide spoke very good English. We got to see and experience so many things: Besides visiting a pagoda and Buddha statue, we also went on a boat ride (with a stop to enjoy a coconut drink) and visited local businesses producing rice paper, conical hats and mats. We had fresh fruit and tea for a snack and Pho soup for lunch which was delicious! We had such a good day and would highly recommend this tour!

We went on this tour, two families of four, with children aged 9-12 years old. We were really happy with it and highly recommend. Lin was our guide and she was fantastic, would really do a trip with her again. It was nice to do this privately and easy to adjust with Lin if needed. Maika helped us book the accommodation in Can Tho which we really appreciated. Would highly recommend and for sure do again.

You did a great job looking after all of our family of 7. The kids enjoyed all the tours and especially the Mekong cruise …as did we……because the kids were so happy we got to enjoy some time to ourselves too. I would recommend Maika Tours if your thinking of visiting Vietnam!
