CRUISES FROM FLORIDA

MEET THE FUNSHINE STATE

BASK IN THE FUN ON FLORIDA CRUISES

People all around the world know Florida because there are few places that do “fun and sun” with quite the flair that this place does. And for all its deserved fame as a vacation destination, the Sunshine State is equally skilled at launching great vacations to other places. So imagine leaving from Florida and cruising to convenient, nearby locations like the Caribbean, The Bahamas… while we’re on the subject, you can even cruise to Mexico from Florida! See what we’re getting at? But if you’re cruising from Florida, 2024 or beyond, make sure to set aside some time to explore what’s good on land.

  • Jacksonville

Port Canaveral

Cruise from spots across florida.

With some of the best cruises from Florida, The Magic City is definitely a top homeport pick! But it’s more than Miami’s proximity to the Caribbean and Bahamas — this is simply a unique destination all its own. There are so many sides to Miami, and you can spend time exploring the city’s varied neighborhoods before or after you cruise. There’s party-ready South Beach, Coral Gables with its Mediterranean style, the spicy Little Havana, and even world-renowned Wynwood — center of street art.

What does it mean to be in the center of everything? When it comes to exploring Florida fun before or after a cruise, if you’re thinking Port Canaveral… you’re right on the mark! For starters, your cruise kicks off on the state’s iconic Space Coast, home to Kennedy Space Center and within reach of the Orlando area’s fun-packed theme parks. This all makes this a great place to launch yours! But Port Canaveral has natural thrills too: an entire coastline of sugary-sand beaches and protected islands for native wildlife.

Tampa’s the kind of place that rewards visitors who take a little time to explore the city before or after they cruise. Try it and you’ll see! Not far from the Gulf Coast you’ll find great shopping, the state aquarium and plenty of local art museums. But that’s before we even get around to talking about the historically Cuban district of Ybor City, with its lively 7th Avenue neighborhood that’s best explored after sundown for Latin-style nightlife.

JACKSONVILLE

Jacksonville is said to be the best of both worlds, with beachfront and urban vistas to explore. But make sure to add a third kind of scenery — a Carnival cruise — to your visit! Before or after you cruise you can enjoy the dining and shopping energy of Jacksonville’s downtown, but know that nature is nearby with the Southbank Riverwalk of the St. Johns River. And if you want to go full-on nature, you’ve got wildlife parks galore and miles of sandy beaches.

Best cruises from Florida: Our top 9 trips from the Sunshine State

Megan duBois

Cruises from Florida are the most popular options for travelers who wish to sail from the United States. It was only this year that Miami was dethroned as the busiest cruise port in the world — replaced by rival Florida home port, Port Canaveral.

Not only do cruises from Florida allow you to see some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean and Bahamas, but they also allow travelers to experience some of the biggest and best cruise ships sailing right now. The largest cruise ship afloat, Royal Caribbean 's Wonder of the Seas, sails from Port Canaveral; family-friendly rival Disney Wish, the newest Disney cruise ship in a decade, also home ports in Florida.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Families planning multigenerational getaways, couples seeking child-free vacations and groups of friends looking to have a good time can all find their perfect ship and itinerary departing from one of Florida's six departure ports.

To give you a taste of the diversity of options available from the Sunshine State, here are our picks for the best cruises from Florida.

Wonder of the Seas to the Western Caribbean

ship cruise florida

Wonder of the Seas , Royal Caribbean's flagship and the largest cruise ship in the world, departs weekly from Port Canaveral (the cruise port closest to Orlando). The ship sails seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries, stopping at tropical destinations like Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay .

While the islands offer plenty of fun in the sun, the ship itself is filled with tons of family-friendly activities. Siblings or parents and kids can race each other to the bottom of the twin waterslides, named Typhoon and Cyclone. If you prefer to stay dry, hop into the Ultimate Abyss tunnel slide, where riders will glide down 10 stories of darkness before bottoming out on the ship's Boardwalk.

Kids ages 6 months to 17 years old have their own hangouts with dedicated programming supervised by fun counselors. While the kids play with new friends, adults can veg out in the glass-encased Solarium, relaxing on padded loungers or in a bubbling hot tub.

When it's time to come together for a meal, you'll please all palates at The Mason Jar , one of Royal Caribbean's newest restaurants that highlights Southern comfort food. The menu teems with tasty dishes like fried chicken, gumbo and po'boys that will leave you completely satisfied. Brunch here comes with a side of live country music.

Freedom of the Seas to the Bahamas

ship cruise florida

Cruisers who are loyal to Royal Caribbean or those who want to test the waters with the brand without the commitment of a seven-night sailing can enjoy short, three-night sailings on Freedom of the Seas out of Miami.

The quickie voyages take you to Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, and a day spent on Royal Caribbean's stunning island is reason enough to book this cruise. At this private Bahamian beach resort, cruisers can ride the slides at Thrill Water Park, rent a beachside cabana for a mix of shade and sun, or float about in a sheltered lagoon. A barbecue lunch is included, and passengers can utilize their onboard drink package.

The 4,635-passenger ship provides fun around every corner. Challenge one another to a round of minigolf, show off your skills on the FlowRider surf simulator or test your muscle on the rock climbing wall. Entertainment on Freedom of the Seas ranges from Royal Caribbean's iconic ice skating shows to live music in the pub. Pool parties, outdoor movies and laser tag are also included with your cruise fare.

With so much to do on board, plus the short sailing times, cruises on this ship can have a distinct party vibe. There's a reason that the College Party Cruise charter company uses Freedom of the Seas for its March spring break sailings.

No cruise is complete without great food, and this ship offers 11 different dining venues highlighting such cuisines as Italian, Mexican and Japanese.

Carnival Elation to the Bahamas

ship cruise florida

Carnival Elation is unique because it's the only ship from any cruise line that sails from Jacksonville. Its four- and five-day sailings to the Bahamas stop at Nassau and a second destination that varies. Choose from cruises to Bimini, Freeport, Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays — the latter two are private beaches operated by the Carnival Corporation.

The 2,606-passenger cruise ship is one of Carnival Cruise Line 's smallest and oldest ships. Aboard the intimate vessel allows you to get to know the crew and other cruisers. Popular hangouts include Carnival's beloved Alchemy Bar, where you can order cocktails at a vintage pharmacy-themed bar.

For outdoor dining, head to Guy's Burger Joint, created by celebrity chef Guy Fieri. Order a loaded burger and perfectly golden-brown fries, then head to the Lido Deck near the pool for great people-watching.

Entertainment on this small ship is still plentiful. Cruisers can splash around at WaterWorks, the family-friendly water playground, or head up to the adults-only Serenity Retreat for a quieter experience. The Punchliner Comedy Club hosts a variety of comedians that will have kids and adults laughing throughout the night. Catch a live production in the main theater or sing along with the pianist at the popular Piano Bar.

Carnival Mardi Gras to the Eastern Caribbean

ship cruise florida

If you'd prefer to sample one of Carnival's newest and largest ships, you can sail from Port Canaveral on the line's Mardi Gras . Its Eastern Caribbean sailings visit island destinations like St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Grand Turk. Mardi Gras' six- to eight-night itineraries provide a good mix of sea days at the start and end of the sailings.

The impressive ship is known for its party atmosphere, which is highlighted by an onboard zone themed to New Orleans' French Quarter. Here, passengers will find Emeril's Bistro 1396, an homage to NOLA's cuisine developed in partnership with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse. Don't miss the Brass Magnolia and the Fortune Teller bars, which start hopping when the sun goes down.

The Ultimate Playground on the ship's top deck is where adrenaline junkies and sports lovers will want to hang out. You'll get all the thrills with a ride on BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, or take a lap around the elevated ropes course. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, minigolf and a full-size basketball court await.

Disney Magic to the Bahamas

ship cruise florida

When the summer of 2024 rolls around, Disney Magic will set sail from Disney Cruise Line 's newest home port in Florida, Fort Lauderdale. The ship's shorter three- and four-night Bahamian itineraries include a visit to Nassau and either Castaway Cay, Disney's stunning private island, or Lighthouse Point, Disney's newest island destination . Longer five-night sailings include a stop at both private beaches or a double dip at Castaway Cay, along with a day at Nassau.

Disney Magic is among Disney's smaller ships, but fans love it for its intimate size and fewer crowds. Beloved Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse welcome you aboard with hugs and photo ops throughout your sailing.

Guests rotate each night among the ship's three dining rooms, including Rapunzel's Royal Table — inspired by Disney's animated "Tangled." There's also Animator's Palate, an homage to Disney's animation studios. You'll have the same servers at all restaurants, so they get to know your family and your dining preferences. At night the Walt Disney Theater features Broadway-caliber shows, like "Tangled: The Musical."

Families looking for some time apart will love that Disney has an included kids club where younger cruisers can enjoy fun activities under the watchful eye of the ship's youth staff. The Oceaneer Club features themed areas like Andy's Room from "Toy Story" and Tinkerbell's home at Pixie Hollow. Kids can also take superhero lessons from Thor. The Oceaneer Lab offers baking classes inspired by "Ratatouille" and sessions where kids learn how to draw their favorite Disney characters.

Adults can use their free time to savor a meal at the adults-only Italian restaurant, Palo, or kick back in the ship's multiple bars and live music venues.

Prefer to sail on a newer Disney ship? Check out Disney Wish , with three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral to Castaway Cay and Nassau.

Holland America's Rotterdam to the Southern Caribbean

ship cruise florida

Holland America is known for its elegant ships and longer itineraries, such as Rotterdam 's nine- to 16-night Southern Caribbean options out of Fort Lauderdale. The newest ship in the fleet, Rotterdam sails to Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba and Half Moon Cay on nine-night voyages, while its longer 16-day sailings add on Grand Turk, the Dominican Republic, and Key West.

With just 2,668 guests onboard, Rotterdam is homey and charming with a touch of luxury. The ship doubles down on live music; a live band plays all the rock hits at the Rolling Stone Rock Room, while an eight-piece band gets everyone on their feet when they play R&B favorites at B.B. King's Blues Club. For some daytime activity, the competition is on at the ship's pickleball courts , where cruisers can take lessons or play in tournaments against their shipmates.

Expect impeccable dining at specialty restaurants like Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French-inspired restaurant from Holland America's master chef Rudi Sodamin; Canaletto, an Italian bistro offering all of the classics; and Tamarind, where diners can sample regional dishes from China, Japan and Southeast Asia. For daytime snacks, don't miss the Dutch pancake bites called poffertjes or the French fries with peanut dipping sauce.

Norwegian Encore to the Eastern Caribbean

ship cruise florida

If you're looking for a weeklong cruise out of Miami, consider sailing on Norwegian Encore to the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas and Tortola. Each island offers spectacular sandy beaches that give way to sparkling blue waters, plus options for water sports, museum visits and hikes to the top of lush mountaintops.

The itinerary also includes a stop at Norwegian Cruise Line 's private island, Great Stirrup Cay. There you can enjoy a relaxing beach day, where all you have to worry about is getting back to the ship on time from the tender dock.

On board the ship, zip around the Encore Speedway in a go-kart, play laser tag in an Atlantis-themed arena, splash around the AquaPark or experience virtual reality games inside the Galaxy Pavilion. For a calmer diversion, purchase a pass to the Vibe Beach Club, an adults-only retreat with lounge chairs, umbrellas and specialty food and drinks. The pass is good for the entire cruise, so you can come and go as you please.

There's a wide range of dining options, including complimentary and extra-charge restaurants. Belly up to the Local Bar and Grill for classic pub dishes and cocktails on tap. If you're willing to pay extra for a meal, Q Texas Smokehouse is worth a stop. The a la carte restaurant serves authentic Texas-style barbecue and all the classic sides. After dinner service, the restaurant turns into a country dance club with a live band and an open dance floor.

Celebrity Apex to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

ship cruise florida

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Apex sets sail from Fort Lauderdale to some of the most picturesque islands in the Caribbean. From November 2023 through April 2024, Apex will offer weeklong sailings to Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and the Dominican Republic. Two sea days give you time to relax and have fun on the ship.

What makes this itinerary special is that it features later all-aboard times in San Juan and St. Maarten, allowing guests to see the islands as they come alive in the sunset glow.

Celebrity Apex is part of Celebrity Cruises ' Edge class of ships, with standout features like high-end design and modern touches. One of Apex's highlights is the Magic Carpet, a suspended lounge that hangs off the side of the ship. When it's positioned by the pool deck, you can stop in to sip cocktails; when it's at water level, it serves as a platform for easy boarding of tender boats.

There are lots of chic spots to chill with your travel companions. Savor some kebabs or a flatbread pizza among live plants in the ship's Rooftop Garden, then watch the sun sink into the sea at the aptly named Sunset Bar. Submerge yourself in a martini-shaped hot tub out on the pool deck or enjoy a dip on a rainy day in the covered adults-only Solarium.

With 29 different food and beverage options on Apex, cruisers will never be bored at meal times. Specialty dining includes Le Grand Bistro, themed after a traditional Parisian boulangerie-patisserie, and the Eden Restaurant, with its tasting menu of international dishes.

If you don't want to spend extra money on food, stick with the ship's four themed main dining rooms and the Mast Grill, which serves juicy burgers and hearty salads. The Oceanview Cafe serves made-to-order breakfast and lunch offerings, while dinner features a rotating menu with international flair.

Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady to Key West and Bimini

ship cruise florida

Step aboard the adults-only Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady for a Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise to Key West, Florida and Bimini, Bahamas, from Miami. The four-night sailings are great for cruisers who want to try out Virgin Voyages or those who want a long weekend away.

You can book an excursion in Key West, but it's easy to explore on your own. Take a ride on the hop-on, hop-off bus or saunter down Duval Street and around Old Town. For local fare, swing by D.J.'s Clam Shack for fresh seafood or Garbo's Grill for Korean barbecue beef tacos. Both were showcased on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." Treat yourself to key lime pie on a stick before you head back to the ship.

In Bimini, head straight to Virgin's exclusive beach resort, the Beach Club at Bimini . Here, you can enjoy floating in the pool, Caribbean-themed lunch and games on the beach.

Scarlet Lady is a playground for grownups. The Redemption Spa is a relaxing retreat where you can book a block of time to enjoy the thermal suite or try out a couples massage. For a permanent reminder of your cruise, get a tattoo at Squid Ink . The ship is known for its creative theatrical performances and rollicking nightlife. Head to The Manor for comedy and drag shows, plus late-night revelry. Don't miss Virgin's hyped-up Scarlet Night, which culminates in an epic pool party.

All of the table-service restaurants on Scarlet Lady are included in your cruise fare. You won't find a traditional main dining room. To secure your preferred mealtimes, book dinner reservations through the Virgin Voyages app as soon as you can. Restaurants that are not to be missed include Extra Virgin for Italian fare; The Wake, the fine-dining steakhouse; and Gunbae, the Korean barbecue restaurant where you start your meal with a drinking game.

Scarlet Lady sails from Miami with voyages from four to eight nights to destinations in Mexico, Honduras, the Florida Keys, Puerto Rico, and St. Croix. All include a full day at Virgin Voyages Beach Club at Bimini where guests can take a guided scuba dive or a cultural tour, enjoy an afternoon cruise around Bimini, or relax on the beach in a comfy day bed.

Virgin Voyages cruises include all food, non-alcoholic beverages, tips, Wi-Fi, and group fitness classes. More than 20 eateries offer something for everyone, with everything from 24-hour casual spots to upscale steakhouses. Accommodations range from inside staterooms to the over-the-top Mega Rockstar Suites.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking cruises depart from Fort Lauderdale for destinations that include Caribbean islands, Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, and Honduras. In keeping with its theme of being the “thinking person’s cruise,” the ships have onboard libraries, guest lectures, and classes to enhance the experience.

Viking’s new, all-veranda ocean ships carry only 930 guests (much fewer than the thousands you'll see on mega-ships). The modern Scandinavian design is elegant, and each ship is identical, providing a comfortable level of familiarity for Viking’s many returning guests.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas cruises embark in Miami for destinations in the Caribbean that include Curacao, Aruba, St. Barts, Trinidad, Guadalupe, Barbados, and more. The cruise line offers a 17-day voyage with visits to Aruba, Curacao, and several other islands before heading north to Charleston, Norfolk, and New York City. A longer 150-night cruise originates in Miami and ends in San Francisco after visiting ports around the globe.

With all-suite luxury ships, all-inclusive dining, upscale shore excursions, and pre-cruise hotel stays, Regent Seven Seas cruises generally attract adults and experienced travelers who appreciate the sophisticated atmosphere and amenities. Evening entertainment includes cabaret shows, musical revues, and performances by the Regent Signature Orchestra. A spa, fitness center, casino, cooking classes, lecture programs, and presentations that highlight destinations are available onboard, too.

Celebrity Cruises

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises depart from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Tampa for short trips to the Bahamas and longer voyages throughout the Caribbean. Three and four-night getaways are popular, with stops in Key West and Nassau. An 11-night Panama Canal cruise boards in Fort Lauderdale for two days at sea before visiting Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, and Cartagena, Columbia before returning to Fort Lauderdale.

“Relaxed luxury” is how Celebrity describes its style, and the focus is on service, dining, entertainment, and comfort. Guests can upgrade their experience by booking a room in The Retreat, with suite accommodations, a private restaurant, an exclusive lounge and sundeck, and a dedicated butler. Families are welcome, and Celebrity offers Camp at Sea with engaging and enriching programs for younger travelers.

Holland America Line

Courtesy of Holland America Line

Holland America offers Caribbean cruises, Panama Canal crossings, transatlantic journeys, and more trips (ranging from seven to 31 days) from its Fort Lauderdale port. The Panama Canal, Inca, and South America Discovery cruise stops in Aruba before entering the canal and heads to ports in Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Uruguay before disembarkation in Buenos Aires.

Their newest ship, Rotterdam , continues Holland America’s tradition of excellent cuisine, service, and entertainment. Restaurants range from casual to gourmet with menus by world-class celebrity chefs. And young cruisers stay busy at Club HAL with arts and crafts, video games, scavenger hunts, and themed parties.

Seabourn cruises depart from Miami to reach destinations in the Caribbean and beyond. The luxury cruise line’s itineraries tend to be longer; the 140-day Extraordinary Discoveries cruise ends in Barcelona after visits to ports in Africa, Australia, and the South Pacific, to name a few. Transatlantic cruises go to Barcelona, Lisbon, and Dover.

Seabourn’s intimate ships feature ocean-front suites, world-class dining, and premium wines and spirits. In the Grand Salon, lectures, live music, cabaret performances, and classical recitals entertain guests. Onboard entertainment includes “An Evening With Tim Rice,” a concert-style presentation highlighting his most popular work, from "Jesus Christ Superstar" to "The Lion King."

Miami Cruise Port

florida skyline

When it comes to setting sail on a dream cruise, there’s no port quite as bustling or electrifying as Miami’s very own cruise port . With over five million cruise passengers each year, Miami’s port isn’t just big; it’s the world’s largest cruise ship port, earning itself the glamorous title of the “Cruise Capital of the World.” Want to see the Caribbean? Or maybe Latin America or even Europe? The ships departing from Miami’s port have itineraries that’ll make your travel dreams come true.

But wait, there’s more! From Miami International Airport , the port is a breezy 10-mile drive. If you’re landing at Orlando, it’s 230 miles away, or Fort Lauderdale is just 30 miles – all manageable distances to kickstart your sea voyage.

Now, about those ships. Miami Cruise Port isn’t just about numbers; it’s about variety. Big names like Royal Caribbean , Disney Cruise Line , Carnival , and even luxurious ones like Holland America Line all make Miami their home. From the gigantic Oasis-class ships to the elegant Icon-class vessels, Miami’s port is equipped to handle them all.

And if you find yourself with some spare time before or after your cruise, Miami won’t disappoint. Swing and sway all the way to Miami Beach, indulge in a feast of international delicacies, or embark on a shopping spree in Midtown. The city’s vibrant culture extends beyond the port, making it a must-visit destination even if you’re not on a cruise. Miami Cruise Port isn’t just a terminal; it’s the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.

Port Canaveral

florida Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral, folks, is like the Robin to Miami’s Batman. Though not as big and bustling as Miami, it’s still a superstar in its own right. With around 4.5 million cruise passengers donning their sunglasses and flip-flops here each year and approximately 1,400 ships sailing through, it’s a seafarer’s paradise.

Now, let’s talk cruise lines. Though it may lack the glamorous diversity of Miami, Port Canaveral stands as a preferred stopover for some of the world’s most opulent cruise ships. Lines docking here include Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, and MSC. And hey, if you’re keen on seeing some of the biggest ships out there, including the awe-inspiring Wonder of the Seas, this port is your ticket to maritime splendor.

Need to catch a flight? Melbourne Orlando International Airport is just a breezy 45-minute drive from the port. But most globe-trotters prefer to land at Orlando International Airport, roughly 46 miles away. And thanks to those smooth Florida roads, it’s a quick hop, skip, and jump to the port from there too.

But wait, there’s more! Fancy some pre- or post-cruise fun? Port Canaveral is a treasure trove of excitement, with the Kennedy Space Center just around the cosmic corner. And if you’ve got a family of fun-seekers, brace yourself for mini-golf, beaches, escape rooms, manatee sanctuaries, and more. And let’s not forget the major attractions like Universal Studios and Disney World! They’re just an hour’s drive away.

Port Tampa Bay

Port Tampa Bay in Florida

Port Tampa Bay! A place where size doesn’t quite measure the grandeur. While it may not boast the enormous passenger numbers of its Floridian siblings (like Port Everglades with its astounding 3.8 million passengers per year ), Port Tampa Bay proudly welcomes around a cool million cruise guests annually. That’s still enough to place it in the esteemed company of the top 30 ports worldwide – talk about punching above its weight!

Unlike its larger counterparts, Port Tampa Bay has a knack for attracting the cruise industry’s charming veterans. Here, you won’t typically find the newest and largest ships, but rather the seasoned sea-farers that carry their vintage charm. Among the biggest cruise lines gracing its docks are:

  • Royal Caribbean
  • Marella Cruises
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line

Arriving at this port is a scenic journey through Tampa’s vibrant cityscape. It’s a breezy 30-40 minute drive from Tampa International Airport , and the drive itself is a mini-tour through Tampa’s bustling city center. Planning an overnight stay? The central hotels have you covered.

But wait, there’s more to Port Tampa Bay than cruise ships and city views. For those traveling with youthful adventurers, be sure to include stops at attractions like Busch Gardens Theme Park, the Florida Aquarium, ZooTampa, or Big Cat Rescue. Whether you’re embarking or disembarking, Port Tampa Bay offers a treasure trove of experiences that are sure to make your cruise vacation an unforgettable adventure. 1

Port of Palm Beach

Port of Palm Beach

Nestled in the sunny embrace of West Palm Beach, just a hop, skip, and a conga line North of Miami, you’ll discover the Port of Palm Beach . This port may be smaller in stature compared to its Floridian siblings, but don’t let its size fool you; it’s the perfect gateway for some exclusive cruise experiences.

Primarily serving as a home port for American Queen Voyages , the Port of Palm Beach invites adventurers aboard smaller ships to explore the hidden gems along the US coastline. If you’ve got a penchant for yacht living, SeaDream occasionally graces this port with a luxurious visit.

For those who prefer their sea legs with a side of rhythm, the Margaritaville at Sea ‘cruise line’ offers 2-night and 3-night cruises from this port. More party experience than a traditional cruise, these Bahamas-bound journeys are all about letting loose Margaritaville-style.

Worried about accessibility? Fear not! The Palm Beach International Airport is just 11 miles away, though it usually caters to internal US flights. And if you’re looking to dip your toes in the sand before or after cruising, there are lovely beaches and the Manatee Lagoon attraction nearby.

Unlike bustling tourist spots like Miami or Fort Lauderdale, the Port of Palm Beach offers a more laid-back vibe. It’s the ideal port for those looking to escape the ordinary and dive into something uniquely Floridian.

Port of Jacksonville

Port of Jacksonville

When it comes to Florida’s bustling cruise scene, Port Jaxport might not steal the spotlight, but oh boy, does it dance in the shadows! Located in Jacksonville, this port is the charming and more intimate cousin of bigger names like Tampa or Miami. Hosting around 360,000 merry cruise passengers annually with approximately 75 ship visits, it may be petite, but it sure knows how to party.

Now, let’s talk ships, shall we? The star of Jaxport is none other than the Carnival Elation. Though one of the smaller ships in the Carnival fleet, it’s a vessel brimming with joy and a splash of fun. American Cruise Lines, featuring American Star and MS Independence, also grace the port with multiple visits, adding their flair.

Concerned about transportation? Fear not! Jacksonville International Airport , your gateway to Jaxport, is just a breezy 20 to 30-minute ride away. And if you find yourself with time to explore Jacksonville, be sure to indulge in some wild fun at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, or immerse yourself in learning at the Museum of Science and History. You might even hear a tiger’s roar at the nearby conservation center.

A tad further away, but still within reach, are the airports at Orlando and Palm Beach, offering accessibility to those craving a taste of different Florida flavors.

Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale)

Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the crown jewel of Florida’s cruise empire: Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale! Standing tall as the third busiest cruise port not just in the Sunshine State but around the globe, Port Everglades welcomes a staggering 3.8 million cruise passengers each year. To put that in perspective, Barcelona’s port, Europe’s largest, sees 1.1 million fewer passengers. How’s that for the big league?

Now, don’t let those numbers scare you. Port Everglades is like that friendly neighborhood joint, hosting around 850 ship visits annually (more than two a day, if you’re counting) and harboring top-notch cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Princess Cruises, to name a few.

Need a lift from the airport? The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is practically next door, less than 4 miles away! It’s a breezy 10-minute cab ride on a good traffic day, or you can hitch a ride on the regular shuttle buses.

But what makes Port Everglades truly special? Let’s talk about the surroundings. Ever dipped your toes in the Fort Lauderdale beaches ? They might not boast the fame of Miami’s shores, but they’re equally stunning and a tad quieter too.

And if you’re the type who loves to shop ’til you drop, or enjoy a scrumptious meal before setting sail, you’ll find interesting shops and good restaurants within reach. Staying overnight? Consider booking a hotel near Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port.

Selecting the Ideal Florida Port for Your Vacation

Ideal Florida Port for Vacation

Selecting the ideal port for your vacation is like choosing the perfect dance partner for a beachside samba. You want the rhythm, the passion, and a bit of sparkle! With so many dazzling Florida ports, how do you pick the one that will sweep you off your feet? Worry not, dear traveler, for we have a treasure map to guide you.

Factors to Consider

Ah, the nitty-gritty details! Fear not, we’ll make this fun. First and foremost, consider your cruise destinations. If you’re dreaming of sipping piña coladas in the Bahamas or exploring the Panama Canal, choose a port that aligns with your cruise itinerary. Ports like Port Tampa Bay or Port Canaveral may serve different cruise destinations.

Accessibility is another vital factor. Consider the proximity to airports like Orlando International Airport or Fort Lauderdale Airport . A shorter ferry ride from the airport might mean more time for onboard shuffleboard! Also, think about the cruise lines you prefer.

If you’re a die-hard fan of Disney Cruise Line or committed to Carnival Cruise Lines , select a port where they set sail. And let’s not forget onshore attractions. Fancy a pre-cruise tour of Busch Gardens Theme Park or a romantic stroll on West Palm Beach ? Your choice of port can offer exciting attractions.

Tips and Recommendations

Grab your notepad; here’s where we spill the beans. Arriving a day before the cruise? Choose a port with nearby attractions like Port of Palm Beach , close to lively beaches. If budget is a concern, some ports offer special cruise deals and affordable cruise vacation packages. Keep an eye out for those wallet-friendly waves!

For family fun, consider ports like Port Canaveral , near the Kennedy Space Center , that offer entertaining options for kids and adults alike. And if the bustling atmosphere of the world’s busiest cruise port isn’t your scene, perhaps a smaller, cozier port like Jacksonville Port might be your cup of tea.

Selecting the ideal Florida port isn’t just about logistics; it’s about creating the perfect beginning to your vacation story. It’s a blend of practicality and magic, cost and experience, sand and sea.

Determining the Optimal Time to Book a Florida Cruise

Optimal Time to Book a Florida Cruise

When it comes to embarking on a Florida cruise, timing isn’t just everything; it’s the only thing. It’s the beat to your conga, the breeze to your sail, the coconut to your cocktail. So, what’s the secret? Hold on to your captain’s hat; we’re diving into the perfect season to book your next cruise vacation.

If you’ve ever dreamed of sailing the azure waters off Florida’s coast, tapping your feet to the rhythm of the waves, and soaking up the endless sunshine, you need to pay close attention to something called the “wave season.” The wave season, which typically sweeps through January to March , is not just a popular dance move at beach parties; it’s the prime time to book a cruise.

In these enticing months, various cruise lines, including major ones such as Royal Caribbean International and Norwegian Cruise Line, frequently present alluring cruise offers. From Port Miami to Port Everglades, Florida’s bustling cruise ports become a hub for cruise passengers seeking the perfect blend of fun, sun, and savings.

But why is this season so special, you ask? Well, during the wave season, Florida’s cruise ports are serenading passengers with the siren song of the sea. The weather is at its balmy best, the beaches are sparkling, and the cruise terminals are abuzz with excitement. Whether you want to explore the Port of Palm Beach or take a ferry ride to Long Beach Cruise Terminal , the wave season offers a wide variety of options and destinations.

However, don’t let the word “season” fool you. In Florida, the wave season is more of a state of mind. A magical moment when the stars align, and you can almost hear the calypso playing in the distance. So grab your sunscreen, dust off your flip-flops, and dance your way into booking your Florida cruise during the wave season.

Essential Strategies for Effortlessly Navigating Cruise Ports in Florida

Florida’s vibrant cruise ports are gateways to some of the world’s most enchanting destinations. Whether it’s a luxurious escape to the Caribbean or a fun-filled family adventure, the journey begins at the port. However, navigating these bustling hubs can be daunting for both new and seasoned travelers.

From transportation logistics to handling luggage, knowing the ins and outs of the embarkation process is crucial. In the following section, we will explore essential strategies to ensure a smooth, stress-free experience at Florida’s cruise ports. These insider tips will guide you through the intricacies of arrival, boarding, and departure, laying the foundation for an unforgettable voyage.

Save Money by Skipping the Hotel

In the world of cruising, conventional wisdom often advises arriving a day before departure to accommodate any unexpected delays. However, for the brave at heart, flying in and out of Florida on the same day as embarkation and disembarkation can be an effective money-saving strategy.

By booking nonstop flights and landing at least 4 hours before boarding, you can save on hotel expenses. But beware, while this tactic has worked for many, others have faced travel challenges such as weather delays or mechanical problems, turning the journey into a cautionary tale.

Stick Close to the Port When Booking a Hotel

If you opt to stay in a hotel before your cruise, selecting one near the port is vital. Being close to the port minimizes the risk of traffic delays and other unforeseen circumstances, ensuring a smooth embarkation process.

Cities like Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa have several well-reviewed hotels near their respective ports, such as the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort and the Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay. These convenient locations can make your cruise experience more relaxed and enjoyable.

Pre-arrange Rides to the Cruise Port

Pre-arranging rides to the cruise port can save both time and stress, whether you’re departing from a Florida port or elsewhere. Having your transportation sorted in advance means less time spent in line, in the heat, and more time enjoying the anticipation of your cruise. This strategy ensures a smoother and more relaxing start to your vacation, especially when traveling with family.

Understand What “Taxi” Service Means

In Florida’s cruise ports, not all “taxis” are private rides. Some may actually be shuttle vans, which can lead to unexpected delays. Understanding what kind of service you are getting into is essential. A seemingly quick taxi ride can turn into a time-consuming shuttle service, adding unexpected minutes or even missing a flight. Clarify if your ride is private or group-based to avoid confusion and delays.

Plan for Porter Assistance at Disembarkation Ports

Porters can be incredibly helpful when leaving the cruise ship, assisting with luggage collection and customs. However, once outside the terminal, their assistance ends, and you’re left to handle your luggage on your own.

If you have significant luggage, pre-arranging a ride is advisable. Having a predetermined ride waiting ensures that you don’t have to struggle with your luggage through a busy taxi line or leave it unattended, adding an extra layer of comfort to your journey.

Setting sail on a cruise from Florida’s harbors is an exhilarating and gratifying experience, yet it calls for meticulous planning and thoughtful consideration. From deciding whether to arrive a day early or on the same day as your cruise to selecting the most conveniently located hotel, every choice contributes to the success of your journey. Understanding the nuances of taxi services, pre-arranging rides, and recognizing the limitations of porters at disembarkation ports can save time, money, and stress.

By following these essential strategies for effortlessly navigating Florida’s cruise ports, travelers can ensure a smooth and memorable experience from the moment they arrive at the port to the moment they step on board. The waves are calling, and with these insightful guidelines, all that’s left to do is set sail into the tropical paradise, knowing that you’ve crafted a perfectly planned cruise vacation.

What are the main cruise ports in Florida?

Florida’s primary cruise harbors encompass Port Miami, Port Canaveral near Orlando, Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, and the Port of Tampa Bay. What attractions can I explore near Florida cruise ports?

Near Florida’s cruise ports, travelers can explore beautiful beaches, amusement parks like Disney World and Universal Studios, unique wildlife at the Manatee Lagoon, historical sites, and vibrant nightlife in cities like Miami and Tampa. Cultural hubs like Miami’s Little Havana also offer a taste of local flavor.

Are there any special travel requirements for cruising from Florida?

Travel requirements for cruising from Florida may include valid identification, visas (for international destinations), and adherence to specific cruise line policies. Additionally, health and vaccination requirements can vary, especially in light of COVID-19, so keeping updated on the latest guidelines is essential.

What port do cruise ships leave from in Florida?

Cruise ships in Florida depart from several major ports, including Port Miami, Port Everglades, Port Canaveral, and the Port of Tampa Bay. The particular port you’ll depart from hinges on both the cruise line and the selected itinerary. Smaller ports like the Port of Palm Beach also serve more specialized cruise lines.

Things To Do

Subscriber only, travel | 8 new ships coming to norwegian cruise line, sister brands plus dock at great stirrup cay.

Norwegian Cruise Line's second Prima-class ship Norwegian Viva arrived to Miami on Nov. 28, 2023 as it began its first Caribbean sailing season. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

Princess Cruises Now Has a Train-to-port Service With Florida's Brightline — and You Can Have Your Luggage Delivered to the Ship

T ravelers boarding a Princess cruise will now be able to take advantage of the new “Rail & Sail" service from any of Brightline’s Florida stations.

High-speed rail company Brightline is making it easier to catch a cruise in Florida thanks to a new partnership with Princess Cruises.

Travelers boarding a Princess cruise will now be able to take advantage of the new “Rail & Sail" service from any of Brightline’s Florida stations, Princess Cruises shared with Travel + Leisure . The cruise line will then provide a complimentary motorcoach service between either the Orlando or Fort Lauderdale train stations and the embarkation terminal.

Travelers who take the train to the port will also have the ability to opt-in to a new luggage express service, which costs $35 per bag. With the new service, passengers will be able to check their bags upon arrival at the train station and have them delivered directly to their staterooms.

To start, the luggage express service will only be offered on Orlando to Fort Lauderdale trains. Princess plans to add the service on Fort Lauderdale to Orlando trains in the future.

“A Princess cruise is already the best value in travel and this new partnership with Brightline makes it even easier and more enjoyable to sail with us from the top-rated ports in South and Central Florida,” John Padgett, the president of Princess Cruises, said in a statement shared with T+L. “Our guests can just sit back, relax, and let us do the rest, including delivering their luggage directly to their stateroom.”

To celebrate the new train partnership, Princess is offering a credit to use on Brightline’s tickets for passengers who book a cruise through May 5. Travelers who book an interior or oceanview stateroom will receive a $50 per person Brightline credit, passengers who book a balcony or deluxe stateroom will receive a $100 per person credit, and passengers who book a mini-suite or a suite will receive a $150 per person credit.

Brightline first launched in 2018 with service between West Palm Beach , Fort Lauderdale, and Miami before expanding to Aventura and Boca Raton. Last year, the company opened its new route between Miami and Orlando . And in 2026, Brightline plans to add a brand-new stop along Florida’s Treasure Coast.

The company offers the option of both “Smart” and “Premium” fares. Premium tickets include added perks like a dedicated lounge at the departure station, priority boarding, checked luggage, and complimentary snacks and beverages. All Brightline trains come with complimentary onboard Wi-Fi.

The Best Weekend Cruises From Florida

A few days beneath swaying palms can change your life.

By Robert Schrader | Published on March 18, 2024

There's only one thing better than a trip to the Sunshine State — and that's the wide variety of weekend cruises from Florida that allow you to mix a sailing with a little time in Florida itself. Whether you're a couple looking for a few days of palm-shaded romance or a family seeking a fun-filled trip during which the kids can blow off some steam, it's hard to resist the allure of setting sail from Florida's many ports to even more idyllic spots further out to sea. Best of all, cruising is a relatively all-inclusive option no matter which sailing you choose, with transportation to various ports, food, entertainment and your place to stay all part of the fare.

The options for weekend cruises from Florida are diverse, even if you only have a small number of days at your disposal. Florida has four ports — Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa and Orlando (Port Canaveral) — that you can choose from based on which is most convenient and which offers the best combination of ship and itinerary for you. Cruise to The Bahamas in just a few days or stretch your vacation to reach Mexico's storied Yucatán Peninsula or the beautiful shores of the eastern Caribbean. Read on for a variety of options to help determine your best choice.

Weekend Cruises Out Of Florida For Couples

Bahamas Cuisine Conch Fritters, Grand Bahama Island

From the sugary sands of The Bahamas to the steel drums of Jamaica and the pink flamingos of Aruba, a weekend cruise is one of the most ideal weekend vacation ideas because of the opportunities for couples to relax together. The best part? No matter your budget, there's an option perfect for you and your significant other.

Only have three nights to spare and a more limited budget? You can fly to Fort Lauderdale and cruise to The Bahamas — and still pack in a ton of excitement onboard and off. Starting in summer 2024, you can sail on the brand new Utopia of the Seas SM , the largest, most action-packed ship to sail weekend cruises from Florida , where you'll find that the onboard amenities (17 waterslides, eight pools and a soul food brunch among them) are only the beginning. At Royal Caribbean's private island resort experience, Perfect Day at CocoCay, the overwater cabanas offer peace and privacy for couples and are worth the splurge for those looking to carve out some space of their own. Settle yourself and your partner in your own paradise as you watch the sun set over the sea from your lounge chairs, and end the day by ordering dinner for two brought right to your table by the ocean.

If you've got seven nights to spare, you and your beloved can travel further afield to the western Caribbean. Cruise on Symphony of the Seas®  to San Juan, Puerto Rico where the only thing more romantic than snorkeling through the seawater hand in hand is the warmth in your partner's eyes as you clink margarita glasses. Back onboard, book a table for two at Jamie's Italian for Tuscan-inspired fare followed by an evening of cocktails and dancing.

With five nights, you can look at western Caribbean options on Independence of the Seas®  out of Miami. On one sailing, you can sign up for a shore excursion in George Town, Grand Cayman that will let you swim with the stingrays — while holding hands, of course. On yet another, you'll head to Falmouth, Jamaica where you can also snorkel — or just find a local hangout and feast on jerk chicken together to the beat of local reggae music.

Weekend Cruises Out Of Florida For Families

Dunn's River Falls, Falmouth, Jamaica

If you're a family with children looking for a weekend cruise from Florida, you'll also be spoiled with choices. For families with children of all ages who only have three nights, the best option is The Bahamas, where the three-night sailings minimize the amount of time you'll have to pull the kids out of school. What's more, the ease of relaxing at Perfect Day at CocoCay is unparalleled for beach-loving kids and parents. You can sail on Allure of the Seas® , Independence of the Seas® or Utopia of the Seas SM  from Orlando and maybe even add on a day at a theme park before heading home. Trying to save money? Allure of the Seas® and   Independence of the Seas® offer great bang for your buck.

If the flight routes work better for you, choose a sailing out of Miami on Allure of the Seas®, Freedom of the Seas® or Independence of the Seas® or out of Fort Lauderdale on  Oasis of the Seas®, Liberty of the Seas® , Rhapsody of the Seas® or Symphony of the Seas®. If you want to really indulge, Symphony of the Seas®  is home to The Ultimate Family Suite, a decadent two-story stateroom that has a hot tub on the balcony and a slide between the two floors.

Searching for long weekend vacation ideas for travel with small kids who aren't in school yet or can easily miss a day or two? You've got plenty of choices if you're sailing from Florida. The five-night western Caribbean cruise on offer from Miami on Oasis of the Seas®  is a good bet for families seeking long stretches of sand and palm trees. This sailing calls on the beaches of Falmouth, Jamaica (home to river tubing and hikes to waterfalls as well as sun-kissed shores) and Labadee (a Royal Caribbean private destination, where the beaches are perfect for young sun worshipers to build their first sandcastles). Onboard, families can hit the waterslides together — then share stories of their day over St. Louis-style spare ribs at Portside BBQ SM  or carnitas tacos at El Loco Fresh ® .

If you're traveling with older kids who have time off for holidays or can afford to be out of school for a few days, you should consider a four- or five-night cruise, potentially from Orlando on Voyager of the Seas® . Choose a sailing to the eastern Caribbean on this ship, and older kids can take advantage of hiking and horseback riding in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. Alternatively, on a cruise from Tampa on Serenade of the Seas®  to the western Caribbean, Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula — with its impressive Maya ruins — might make history lovers out of even the most indifferent teens.

If you're sailing with high school or college students who are academically focused, you'll be pleased to learn that all Royal Caribbean cruise ships offer fast Wi-Fi packages, which means they can access assignments, take remote tests and even participate in class via Zoom if necessary. This allows you to indulge in one of the longer weekend cruises from Florida without your child falling behind in school.

Weekend Cruises Out Of Florida For Singles

Aerial view of Key West

One of the best parts about being a solo traveler is flexibility. For example, if search for "last-minute vacation deals this weekend," chances are good that you'll be able to take advantage of any great rates that fit your personal schedule, without having to factor other people in. Living in the era of remote work (and fast onboard Wi-Fi) increases your freedom: You can often stretch a "weekend" to four or even five days, unlocking a larger number of sailing options, whether you cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa or Orlando. For travelers who like to meet new people, there's always that option on a cruise. One tip to remember: Whatever ship you choose, ask the maître d' in the main dining room on the first day to seat you with other solo travelers to help you make connections straightaway.

With that in mind, why not go the more indulgent route and treat yourself to a five-night sailing? Serenade of the Seas®  sails from Tampa to Cozumel and Costa Maya, both of which are in Mexico.

On six-night sailings on Adventure of the Seas®  out of Orlando, you can visit Puerto Plata, which you can think of as your gateway to the merengue, beans and rice and golden strands of sand in the Dominican Republic.

And, on five-night western Caribbean cruises out of Tampa on Radiance of the Seas® , Mexico will be a highlight. While some solo travelers stay in Cozumel — snorkeling, scuba diving or seeking out tacos and piña coladas — others head farther afield to see the awe-inspiring ruins of Chichén Itzá or the decadently relaxing eco-chic spas of Tulum, for example. Onboard, you can unwind after dinner in the English-style pub or the Champagne bar, depending on your preference. Whatever you choose to do, it's a joy to base the decision entirely on your own interests when you set sail as a solo traveler.

City leaders in Miami trying to drum up new cruise ship business

MOBILE, Ala. ( WALA ) - Two days after Carnival Spirit left the Port City -- Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson, City Director of Transportation & Maritime Joe Snowden, and Visit Mobile President & CEO David Clark are in Miami for the annual “Seatrade Cruise Global 2024″ -- the leading event for all things cruise industry. Expect all of of the major players at the 4-day event. This time around -- Mobile has some leverage -- riding off the success of Carnival Spirit’s inaugural season.

“Good news spreads fast -- and when you have success and you get the Carnival with cruise lines coming back with the Carnival Spirit -- a new ship for Mobile with newer itineraries. It always kind of creates dominoes and other cruise people saying -- hey it’s successful in Mobile -- so we’ve actually had a couple of other calls recently -- so that’s exciting,” said Clark.

And if you have a connection to the cruise ship industry -- Seatrade Cruise Global -- is THE event you want to attend. At this year’s event -- expect more than 10,000 attendees, 600 exhibitors, more than 120 countries represented, and more than 240 speakers.

The Miami Convention Center serving as a backdrop for the cruise ship industry and stakeholders to explore different areas of the business: everything from elevating guest experiences, the latest cruise ship designs and interiors, as well as safety and security. And according to Seatrade Cruise Global’s website -- perhaps one of the most enjoyable perks in attending -- indulging in the future of cruise dining and specialty drinks.

But more importantly -- it’s another opportunity to go before all the major cruise lines. Mobile’s leaders are already meeting with Carnival and others for a chance to lock in a ship during the vacant six months.

“So there’s all the major cruise companies are there and we have preset meetings with a couple. And actually this time -- they called us first! So that kind of never happens. I’ve been doing this show -- going down to Miami for the past 7 consecutive years -- and that hasn’t happened yet. So that’s good news,” said Clark.

Coast Guard searches for missing man reported overboard on Liberty of the Seas cruise ship

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a 20-year-old man who passengers claim jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship that departed from South Florida.

According to the Coast Guard, the man was on the Liberty of the Seas cruise ship Thursday morning when he went overboard 57 miles from Great Inagua in the Bahamas.

Some passengers told the New York Post that the man appeared to be intoxicated when he jumped off the ship.

"As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us," passenger Bryan Sims told the Post. "His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess. When we got to them, he said to his dad, 'I'll fix this right now.' And he jumped out the window in front of us all."

Another passenger told the Post his family appeared "horrified" by what had happened.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicholas Strasburg told WPTV that the search was ongoing Friday morning. He couldn't say whether the man fell or jumped.

"The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the U.S. Coast Guard, who has taken over the search," Royal Caribbean said in a statement. "Our care team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share."

Strasburg said a Coast Guard cutter and helicopter were searching for the missing man and would continue to do so for as long as there is reasonable evidence to suggest survival.

The Liberty of the Seas was on a four-day cruise that departed from Port Everglades on Monday and returned Friday morning, according to cruise-tracking website CruiseMapper .

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Live Updates: Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship hits it; construction crew missing

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, which left from Baltimore on March 23 , will return to Norfolk instead on April 4. "Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements," a spokesperson said in an email.

The ship's April 4 and 12 cruises will leave from Norfolk, too. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations," the spokesperson added. "After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to the Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."

Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.
