Travel insurance can provide peace of mind when you’re away from home, especially when you’ve spent significant money on your vacation. Although you can choose to buy a separate travel insurance policy, not everyone wants or needs to do so.

Many travel credit cards offer complimentary insurance for a variety of occurrences. The Platinum Card® from American Express offers travel insurance with a suite of benefits for eligible travelers, including coverage for trip interruption, rental car damage and lost luggage.

Let’s take a look at travel insurance on The Platinum Card® from American Express , its limits and the benefits it provides.

So, does The Platinum Card® from American Express have travel insurance? The short answer to this is yes, but you’ll need to meet specific requirements for it to apply.

To get coverage from your card, you’ll need to use it to pay for your trip in its entirety. This is true whether you’re looking to utilize the trip insurance or the rental car insurance — you must pay for the full cost with The Platinum Card® from American Express .

Be aware of coverage limitations if you’re traveling using points or miles. While it’s possible to receive benefits when using your card to pay the taxes and fees on a reward redemption, coverage may not always apply.

You may still be covered for trip interruption, delay, and cancellation insurance when using points or frequent flyer miles.

However, rental car and baggage insurance only apply when you’ve used your card to pay for the full cost of whatever you’re buying — no points allowed. The exception is if you redeem American Express Membership Rewards to pay for some or all of the booking.

Trip cancellation protection

The trip cancellation insurance you’ll receive will pay for any nonrefundable losses you incur due to a covered event.

Given the current climate, you may also be wondering: does The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance cover COVID? It can, depending on the reason you need to cancel. Covered events include quarantine imposed by a physician or illness for you, your family members or a traveling companion.

Other eligible events include a change in military orders, inclement weather or jury duty.

If you need to cancel your trip, AmEx will provide up to $10,000 per trip and a maximum of $20,000 every 12 months. Terms apply.

Trip interruption coverage

The Platinum Card® from American Express

As with trip cancellation protection, trip interruption insurance will reimburse you for nonrefundable losses by a covered event.

If your trip is interrupted, American Express will cover you for prepaid land, air and sea travel bookings you’ve missed. They’ll also pay for the cost of an economy-class ticket on the most direct route to rejoin your covered trip (or take you home).

The maximum benefit you’ll receive is $10,000 per trip and up to $20,000 every 12 months. Terms apply.

Trip delay insurance

As it sounds, trip delay insurance will reimburse you for expenses incurred when your trip doesn’t go as scheduled. In the case of The Platinum Card® from American Express , coverage kicks in after you’ve been delayed by at least six hours for a covered reason.

Covered purchases may include food, toiletries, lodging, medication and other personal use items. You’ll be reimbursed for up to $500 on a covered trip and can make two claims within a 12-month period. Terms apply.

Rental car insurance

The Platinum Card® from American Express provides secondary rental car insurance . This means it’ll kick in after other claims — like those made to your personal insurance — have been paid. To activate coverage, you’ll need to decline the insurance offered by the rental car company.

AmEx will provide up to $75,000 due to damage or theft of the rental vehicle, but be aware that the policy doesn’t provide liability insurance.

It’ll also give you up to $1,000 per person (max of $2,000) for personal property lost in the incident and up to $5,000 for accidental injury. Finally, you’ll receive up to $300,000 for accidental death or dismemberment, though the rates will vary depending on the severity of your injuries.

This rental car insurance is valid worldwide with a few notable exceptions, including Australia, Italy and New Zealand. Terms apply.

Baggage coverage

Cardholders and their families are eligible for baggage insurance provided they’ve paid for the fare using The Platinum Card® from American Express . This benefit is only for lost baggage; delayed luggage is not protected.

Coverage limits vary depending on whether you’ve checked your bag or carried it on:

Checked bags: Up to $2,000 per person.

Carry-on: Up to $3,000 per person.

Note also that checked baggage is only covered when you’re actually traveling with a common carrier. Meanwhile, carry-on luggage is also covered when traveling to and from or waiting at the terminal.

There are also specific limits for high-risk items such as jewelry and electronic equipment. For these items, you’ll receive a maximum of $1,000 per person per trip. Terms apply.

Premium Global Assist

What else does The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance cover? Although this last benefit isn’t technically a type of travel insurance, it’s worth including as it can offer help while you travel.

AmEx’s Premium Global Assist hotline is a 24/7 service that can assist you in various ways, such as helping you get a new passport, finding translation services and even arranging for emergency medical evacuation.

Although using Premium Global Assist is free, the services that you may end up using are not necessarily covered by AmEx.

There are exceptions to this — if you need repatriation of mortal remains, emergency medical evacuation or if a child under 16 is left without care, AmEx will provide aid at no additional cost. Terms apply.

To file a claim, you’ll need to contact your benefit administrator. The phone number and timeframe will vary according to the type of insurance you’re using:

Trip cancellation, interruption or delay insurance: Within 60 days, call 844-933-0648.

Baggage insurance: Within 30 days, call 800-228-6855 or online .

Rental car insurance: Within 30 days, call 800-338-1670 or online .

While there is no cost to you for the Platinum Card Concierge services, you are responsible for any purchases, fees, and/or shipping charges you authorize to be charged .

After making a request, you will get all the requested information emailed to you, usually within 48 hours.

Remember that the concierge may not be able to help you with all requests — a restaurant may indeed be fully booked up or a concert at capacity. While you can certainly hope the concierge will help with your request (and many times they do), there are occasions where your request simply can’t be honored.

It can get a little confusing when you are following the prompts on the phone. However, they can easily transfer you to the correct department if you end up in the wrong place.

You should note that if you have any requests dealing with travel, you should ask to speak with the travel department right away — the concierge team will defer travel requests, even those that are minor, to the folks who specifically handle travel.

The American Express Travel portal offers valuable benefits to American Express cardholders, including special prices. Depending on which card you hold, you may also be able to pay for travel with Membership Rewards® points and get access to perks such as discounted airfare and specialty benefits at luxury hotels. Let’s take a look at how the Amex Travel portal works, whether the benefits are worthwhile and who can access Amex Travel’s website.

How to book travel through the Amex Travel portal

Booking travel through the Amex Travel portal requires you to have an online account associated with an Amex card. While you can complete a search on the Amex Travel website without logging in, you will need to do so in order to make a booking.

After you choose whether to book a flight, hotel, vacation rental, vacation package, rental car or cruise, you’ll need to enter your travel details.

For example, if you want to book a flight through Amex Travel, you’ll need to put in your departure airport and destination as well as your dates of travel. The site will then bring up a list of matching results.

You can filter based on when the flights take off as well as how many stops you’re willing to tolerate, among other options. 

The Amex Travel site offers a wide variety of hotel stays and flights, but you’ll always want to double check elsewhere before booking since it doesn’t always feature every option. 

Once you’ve selected a booking, you’ll be taken through the checkout process. This includes providing your personal information and can also include seat requests and adding in loyalty program numbers.

To pay for your booking, you can use your American Express Membership Rewards, if you have a card that earns them, or your American Express card or a combination of both. 

After you’ve booked, you’ll receive a confirmation email containing your reservation information. You can also find your bookings under the My Trips section of Amex Travel.

Who can use the portal?

Any American Express cardholder can use the Amex Travel portal to book travel. But those whose cards don’t earn Amex Membership Rewards points will need to pay with their Amex card.

However, many American Express cards  earn Membership Rewards points that can be redeemed for travel through the Amex Travel portal. These cards include (terms apply):

Is the portal worth using?

The Amex Travel portal can be worth using in certain cases, though it won’t always make sense. For example, some flights aren’t bookable via Amex Travel, so if what you need isn’t available you’ll want to look elsewhere.

That being said, those with certain cards are entitled to exclusive benefits that can lower prices or allow them to redeem points for travel. There are also perks for booking luxury hotels within the portal. In these cases, Amex Travel is definitely worth investigating. 

How to maximize your Amex Travel benefits through the portal

This benefit is only available on tickets booked in premium economy, business or first class, but the savings can be significant. 

For example, we looked at a round-trip flight in premium economy from San Francisco (SFO) to Tokyo (NRT). Booking with Japan Airlines (JAL) directly resulted in a cost of $4,431.40, while the Amex Travel portal and the IAP charged just $3,797.40 for a savings of over $600.

Fine Hotels + Resorts ® and The Hotel Collection

American Express also offers the Fine Hotels and Resorts and The Hotel Collection to eligible cardholders. 

Fine Hotels and Resorts allows guests to book luxury hotels with special benefits. These include room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, an experience credit, late check-out, early check-in and more. 

The Hotel Collection offers similar but less exorbitant benefits. It’s directed toward more midscale properties and includes an experience credit as well as a room upgrade. 

35% rebate on redeemed points

Those who hold The Business Platinum Card from American Express are able to get a 35% rebate on points redeemed for eligible flights booked through the Amex Travel portal (up to 1,000,000 points per calendar year). 

Eligible flights include all fare classes on an airline that you select each year. It also includes first and business class tickets on any airline. 

Quick guide to Amex Membership Rewards

American Express Membership Rewards are the points you earn with eligible Amex cards. These highly flexible and valuable points can be redeemed in a number of ways, though they tend to be most valuable when transferred to Amex airline partners.

Other ways of redeeming Amex points include:

  • Gift cards.
  • Travel booked via Amex Travel.
  • Online shopping. 
  • Statement credits. 

While these are nice options to have, you’ll generally get much less value from your Membership Rewards points by redeeming them in these ways. Finally, although you can redeem your points in the Amex Travel portal, this isn’t necessarily a good idea if you aim to reap maximum value. Even if you’re taking advantage of the 35% rebate on redeemed points for flights, you’ll only ever receive a value of 1.54 cents per point. This is lower than you’d expect when transferring your Amex points to many airline and hotel partners. 

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

No, travel insurance is not automatically included when booking through the Amex portal. But many of the best credit cards feature complimentary travel insurance when using your card to pay, including those from American Express. Otherwise, you may be able to opt in to travel insurance during the booking process or via a third party provider.

The number of Amex points that you’ll need to redeem for a flight will depend on the cash cost of your flight and whether you’re booking through Amex Travel or transferring your Membership Rewards points to an Amex airline partner. Amex Points are worth about one cent when booking flights through the portal, so a flight that costs $500 in cash would require about 50,000 Amex points. You’ll typically get a better deal with transfer partners than booking through the portal.

Our take: The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card is a useful card for those who fly Delta regularly enough to justify the $350 annual fee and want perks including a companion certificate, free checked bags, and a Delta stays hotel credit, but aren’t ready to shell out for the ultra-premium Delta SkyMiles Reserve.

For frequent Delta Air Lines travelers looking to beef up their SkyMiles balance, the Delta Platinum American Express card comes with a meaty suite of benefits and a savory rewards program. Earn bonus miles on all Delta purchases along with groceries and restaurants, score a discount when it comes time to redeem your miles, even fly with a friend or loved one for free.

The companion certificate that comes with the card is good for travel in Main Cabin anywhere Delta flies in the U.S. — as well to the Caribbean and Central America too — so the chances of you being able to take that dream vacation with your loved one just got that much easier.

While the Sky Club lounge benefit on this card went away as of Dec. 31, 2023, there are plenty of other benefits that still make this card worth a second glance. Cardholders are entitled to a 15% discount off the mileage portion of an Award Ticket called the "TakeOff 15" benefit, on all Delta-operated flights. You’ll also receive a credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, get a free first checked bag on all Delta flights, and be protected if your luggage gets damaged, stolen, or lost in transit.

The card also provides several credits that travelers and foodies may find value in:

  • Up to $150 Delta Stays Credit for prepaid hotels or vacation rentals booked via Delta Stays on delta.com.
  • Up to $120 Resy Credit ($10 per month) for eligible restaurant dining. 
  • Up to $120 Rideshare Credit ($10 per month) on eligible rideshare purchases, enrollment required.

Also, if you’re seeking Medallion Status with Delta , you’ll appreciate this card’s MQD Headstart and MQD Boost features. The former perk provides $2,500 MQDs per year while the latter lets cardholders earn $1 MQD for every $20 spent on purchases using this card.

Medallion Status tiers are as follows:

  • Silver at $5,000 MQDs.
  • Gold at $10,000 MQDs.
  • Platinum at $15,000 MQDs.

Delta Platinum cardholders who frequently rely on rental cars in their travels will appreciate that the card provides complimentary Hertz Five Star status (enrollment required).

Who is the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card good for? 

If you live in or near one of Delta’s many hubs, such as Atlanta, Seattle, Minneapolis, Detroit, or Salt Lake City, chances are you’re going to be flying on Delta. This card is great for frequent Delta flyers who can take advantage of benefits such as a free checked bag and the annual companion certificate. 

The $350 annual fee might be off-putting to more casual travelers, but if you fly at least once a year with a friend or family member, the companion pass can easily help you recoup what you pay to carry the card.

Who shouldn’t get the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card? 

If you’re an infrequent Delta flyer and don’t see yourself using this card on the regular, perhaps a different option would be better suited to your spending and travel habits. And, since the Delta Platinum recently lost access to the airline’s famed Delta Sky Clubs, paying $350 for a card with no lounge access will be a tough pill for many folks to swallow. 

For the very frequent Delta traveler, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card offers top-of-the-line luxury perks, including Sky Club access. However, it also charges a top-of-the-line annual fee of $650 in exchange for its premium benefits.

Travelers seeking more flexibility for a similar annual fee to the Delta Platinum might prefer the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card . For a slightly higher cost of $395, cardholders get perks including a Priority Pass Select airport lounge membership (enrollment required), a $300 back annually for bookings made through Capital One Travel, and rewards that transfer to numerous airline and hotel partners.

Pro tip: Many cards give out credits in monthly or other increments. Make sure to make a note in your calendar so you don’t lose out on free money.

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card: How to earn SkyMiles

The Delta Platinum earns elevated miles in four bonus categories. You’ll earn a generous 3 miles per dollar on purchases made directly with Delta, whether those purchases are seat upgrades, tickets, baggage fees, or more. You’ll also earn 3 miles per dollar at hotels, 2 miles per dollar at restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets, and 1 mile per dollar of eligible purchases.

As a welcome bonus to new card applicants, you can earn 90,000 Bonus Miles after you spend $4,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months.

We mention new applicants because you may not be eligible if you’ve had this card or the Delta SkyMiles reserve in the past. If you’re concerned you might not be eligible for the card’s welcome, you can give American Express a call to find out before you apply. You should also receive an alert during the online application process if you’re not eligible and should have the option to exit the application process at that point.

How to redeem SkyMiles 

While it may seem obvious, the easiest way to use your miles is on Delta flights. They don’t make it easy though, since just like the majority of U.S. airlines, Delta no longer publishes an award chart. Instead, the airline uses something called “dynamic pricing.” That means that your flight could have a variety of prices, based not only on where you’re going but when you’re booking, ranging from a few thousand to multiple hundreds of thousands of miles for a flight.

Delta does have a wide range of partners thanks to their membership in the SkyTeam alliance, meaning you could redeem your flights for their partner flights on Air France, KLM, and Aeromexico as examples. These rates have more of a fixed schedule of mileage, but you still won’t find a chart. Some great values are for flights between non-U.S. destinations. Consider using your SkyMiles from Europe to the Middle East or between European cities. You might even find value from Europe to Asia.

Lastly, Delta runs frequent sales through their SkyMiles deals page. Round-trip tickets can be had for as few as 7,000 miles plus taxes and fees. While these are usually for shorter routes, Delta often publishes sales to Mexico, Europe, South America and beyond.

While you can redeem your miles for things like seat selection and premium drinks, your miles are probably better spent on actual flights. With that said, if you don’t have enough miles for a free flight and they’re burning a hole in your proverbial pocket, have a drink on Delta!

Note that the companion fare works for two passengers heading to the same destination from the same origin, on the same dates. However, a notable difference between the personal and business versions of the card involves the bonus categories. Amex Business Platinum cardmembers earn 1.5 points per dollar on up to $2 million in eligible purchases in the U.S. per calendar year with:

The personal and business versions of the Amex Platinum are considered different products. So even if you currently have the Amex Platinum , the issuer's one-bonus-per-card-per-lifetime rule won't prevent you from earning the business card's bonus.

Your American Express credit card info may have been hacked

A merican Express has put out a data breach advisory after third-party merchants experienced a hacking incident targeting its payment hardware, as reported by Bleeping Computer .

The financial services company detailed that the breach occurred in Massachusetts and is associated with an “American Express Travel Related Services Company.” It resulted in several merchants suffering “unauthorized access to its system.” Customers’ credit card information, including account numbers, names, and card expiration data, may have been exposed in the process.

“Account information of some of our Card Members, including some of your account information, may have been involved. It is important to note that American Express-owned or -controlled systems were not compromised by this incident, and we are providing this notice to you as a precautionary measure,” American Express said in a statement.

The company noted that it was the merchant processor, meaning the hardware that accepts payment, that was compromised, not a direct American Express service provider. Even so, customer data is potentially circulating the dark web, after having been accessed by hackers. American Express has not publicly shared specifics on how many customers were affected when the breach took place or what merchant processor was hacked.

The incident is reminiscent of the Wiseasy hack in 2022, in which the Android-based payment system popular in the Asia-Pacific region was compromised and 140,000 payment terminals were affected globally. The payment terminals are used in restaurants, hotels, retail outlets, and schools. However, it was not clear whether Wiseasy notified its customers about the hack.

American Express said it has begun to investigate the matter, in addition to alerting the required regulatory authorities and impacted customers.

The company told BleepingComputer that customers should review their account statements closely for the next 12 to 24 months, making sure to report any suspicious activity. The institution does not hold card members responsible for any fraudulent purchases.

Other recommendations include enabling instant notifications through the American Express mobile app, which allows users to review their purchases and receive instant fraud alerts. Card members also have the option to request a new card number, in the event that their information is stolen.

I have my grandmas amex platinum is there any amex lounges or the equivalent that this card will get me into?

I have a 4 hour layover before going to tel aviv.

How is transearos 777s economy btw, i usually fly turkish and that is fine.

Basic Card Members on a Consumer Platinum Card or Centurion account and Additional Centurion Card Members are eligible for Uber VIP and the monthly Amex Benefit (“Amex Benefit”). To receive this benefit, you must have downloaded the latest version of the Uber App and your eligible Platinum Card or Centurion Card must be a method of payment in your Uber account. The Amex Benefit may only be used in the United States. To be eligible for the Amex Benefit, your Card Account must not be canceled or past due. American Express reserves the right to suspend your eligibility for the Amex Benefit if we suspect any violation or abuse. To continue to receive the Amex Benefit, the details for your eligible Card must be kept up to date in your Uber Account. Cards added to your Uber account through a third party such as Apple Pay or PayPal will not be eligible. An eligible Platinum Card or Centurion Card may receive the Amex Benefit on one Uber account. If the same Card is added to multiple Uber accounts, only the first Uber account to which the Card is added will receive the Amex Benefit. If your American Express Card details change, you will need to make required updates to your Card details in your Uber payment profile before the end of the current month to ensure you remain enrolled in the Amex Benefit. If you do not update your Card details prior to the first day of the following month, you may need to re-enroll to continue to receive your Amex benefit. $189 CLEAR ® Plus Credit

Basic Card Members can earn up to $189 in statement credits per calendar year when the Platinum Card ® or Additional Cards on the Account are used to pay for an annual CLEAR Plus membership. Enrollment in CLEAR Plus is required and is subject to CLEAR’s terms and conditions. CLEAR Plus memberships automatically renew each year unless canceled and CLEAR will charge the applicable membership fee to the Card CLEAR has on file. American Express has no control over the application and/or approval process for CLEAR, and does not have access to any information provided to CLEAR by the Card Member or by CLEAR to the Card Member. American Express has no liability regarding the CLEAR program. If a Card Member's application is not approved by CLEAR, CLEAR will refund the charges. If the statement credit benefit has been applied before CLEAR refunds the charges, that statement credit will be reversed. Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and any Additional Card Members on the Card Account are eligible for statement credits. However, the total amount of statement credits for eligible purchases will not exceed $189 across all Cards on the Account per calendar year. The airline must submit the charge under the appropriate merchant code, industry code, or required service or product identifier for the charge to be recognized as an incidental air travel fee. Please allow 2-4 weeks after the qualifying incidental air travel fee is charged to your Card Account for statement credit(s) to be posted to the Account. We rely on airlines to submit the correct information on airline transactions, so please call the number on the back of the Card if statement credits have not posted after 4 weeks from the date of purchase. The Centurion ® Lounge

The Platinum Card ® Members have unlimited complimentary access to all locations of The Centurion Lounge. Gold Card and Green Card Additional Cards on your Platinum Card ® account are not eligible for complimentary access. Card Members may bring up to two (2) complimentary companions into The Centurion ® Lounge locations in the U.S., at Hong Kong International Airport and at London Heathrow Airport. Refer to the specific location’s access policy for more information. All access to The Centurion Lounge is subject to space availability. To access The Centurion Lounge, the Card Member must present The Centurion Lounge agent with the following upon each visit: his or her valid Card, a boarding pass showing a confirmed reservation for a departing flight on the same day on any carrier and a government-issued I.D. Note that select lounges allow access to Card Members with a confirmed reservation for any same-day travel (departure or arrival). Refer to the specific location’s access policy for more information. Failure to present this documentation may result in access being denied. Card Members will not be compensated for changes in locations, rates or policies. Delta Sky Club

The Platinum Card ® Member must present their valid American Express Card, government-issued I.D., and boarding pass to the Delta Sky Club ambassador. Boarding pass must show a reservation for a same-day Delta-operated flight (Delta or Delta connection) departing from or arriving at the airport in which the Delta Sky Club is located. Name on boarding pass must match name on the Card. Eligible Card Members on departing flights can only access the Delta Sky Club within 3 hours of their flight's scheduled departure time. During a connection between Delta-operated flights on the same ticket, you may use the Delta Sky Club in your connecting airport at any time during the layover. Delta reserves the right to limit access for non-revenue flyers at any Delta Sky Club. Additional Gold Cards and Additional Green Cards on Business Platinum accounts, and Additional Gold Cards on Consumer Platinum accounts, are not eligible for complimentary access through The Global Lounge Collection benefit. Access to Delta Sky Club partner lounges is not permitted. Individuals must be at least 18 years of age to access Delta Sky Club, and 21 years of age to access locations with a self-service bar, unless accompanied by a responsible, supervising adult who has access to the lounge. Priority Pass Select

These Terms and Conditions govern Platinum Card ® Card Members' participation in and use of the Priority Pass ™ Select program. Priority Pass is an independent airport lounge access program. At any visit to a Priority Pass Select lounge that admits guests, you may bring in two guests for no charge. After two guests, you will be automatically charged the guest visit fee equal to the guest visit fee of the Priority Pass Standard program for each additional guest. Some lounges do not admit guests. By enrolling in Priority Pass Select, you agree that you will be responsible for any additional accompanying guest visits and that your Card will be automatically charged after you have signed for the additional guest visit and it has been reported to Priority Pass by the participating lounge. Additionally, you acknowledge and agree that American Express will verify your Card account number and provide updated Card account information to Priority Pass. Priority Pass will use this information to fulfill on the Priority Pass Select program and may use this information for marketing related to the program. Once enrolled, Platinum Card ® Card Members whose Card account is not cancelled may access participating Priority Pass Select lounges by presenting your Priority Pass Select card and airline boarding pass. Fine Hotels + Resorts ® (FHR) program benefits are available for new bookings made through American Express Travel with participating properties and are valid only for eligible U.S. Consumer, Business, and Corporate Platinum Card ® Members and Centurion ® Members (Delta SkyMiles ® Platinum Card Members are not eligible). The average total value of the program benefits is based on prior year bookings for stays of two nights; the actual value varies. Noon check in and room upgrade are subject to availability and are provided at check in; certain room categories are not eligible for upgrade. Advance reservations are recommended for certain experience credits. $200 Hotel Credit

You can earn up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year when you use an eligible U.S. Consumer Basic Platinum or Additional Platinum Card to pay for eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts ® and The Hotel Collection bookings made through American Express Travel (meaning through amextravel.com , the Amex ® App, or by calling the phone number on the back of your eligible Card) or when you use an eligible Additional Gold Card on such Platinum Card Account to pay for eligible prepaid bookings for The Hotel Collection made through American Express Travel (meaning through amextravel.com , the Amex ® App, or by calling the phone number on the back of your eligible Card). Fine Hotels + Resorts ® program bookings may be made only by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic Platinum and Additional Platinum Card Members. The Hotel Collection bookings may be made by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic and Additional Platinum Card Members and Additional Gold Card Members on the Platinum Card Account. Delta SkyMiles ® Platinum Card Members are not eligible for the benefit. A 12-month Equinox+ membership is required to purchase a SoulCycle At-Home bike. The SoulCycle At-Home Bike Credit may not be combined with any other discounts or offers unless indicated. The SoulCycle At-Home Bike is available to purchase and ship in the 48 contiguous United States and Washington, D.C. Platinum Card Members can receive the $300 statement credit on up to 15 individual SoulCycle At-Home Bike purchases per calendar year. $300 Equinox Credit

Equinox Membership Option.

Eligible Equinox membership types include Single Club, Regional Access, All-Access, Destination Access, and E by Equinox access. All Equinox memberships include complimentary access to Equinox+. Certain clubs are excluded from each membership type, and Equinox reserves the right to in the future exclude other clubs from its All-Access and Destination Access memberships. To access and use Equinox, eligible Card Members (or their parent or legal guardian, as applicable) must sign Equinox’s standard membership agreement and any other waivers and provide documentation generally required as part of Equinox’s joining process. Membership is subject at all times to Equinox’s membership agreement and Equinox’s standard rules, policies and procedures. Equinox+ Membership Option.

To enroll, eligible Card Members (or their parent or legal guardian, as applicable) must follow the steps described above and then purchase an Equinox+ membership at www.equinoxplus.com and agree to the Equinox+ Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy. Membership in Equinox+ is subject at all times to the foregoing and Equinox Media’s additional standard rules, policies and procedures. Walmart+ Monthly Membership Credit 

You can receive a statement credit for the monthly Walmart+ membership fee ($12.95 + applicable taxes) when you use your U.S. Consumer Platinum Card to pay for your monthly Walmart+ membership. Enrollment in monthly Walmart+ membership is required. Purchases of any membership Plus Ups (for example, Walmart InHome) are not eligible for this benefit. If you are already enrolled in the monthly Walmart+ membership, you will begin receiving your monthly statement credit after your monthly Walmart+ membership fee is charged to your Card. If you are enrolled in the annual Walmart+ membership, you will not be eligible to receive monthly statement credits for that annual membership. To receive the credit, you must switch your annual Walmart+ membership, at least one day before your annual renewal date, to a monthly Walmart+ membership. If you do not switch before your renewal date, your annual Walmart+ membership will automatically renew and the account will not receive the monthly statement credit for the annual membership fee. $240 Digital Entertainment Credit

Enrollment is required to receive the benefit. Only the Basic Card Member or Authorized Account Manager(s) on a U.S. Consumer Platinum Card Account can enroll in the benefit. Eligible purchases (see below) must be made directly with the participating partners in the U.S. locations where the partners’ services are available. Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and Additional Card Members on the enrolled Card Account are eligible for statement credits. However, each Card Account is eligible for up to $20 in statement credits per calendar month, for a total of $240 per calendar year in statement credits across all Cards on the Account. Participating partners are Audible, Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu, Peacock, SiriusXM, and The New York Times. Age minimums and other restrictions apply to use of each partner's services; see each partner’s terms and conditions for more information. Purchases of prepaid or gift cards from third-party retailers for use at these participating partners are not eligible for this benefit.

Audible:  All Audible purchases made directly through www.audible.com are eligible, for example, Audible subscriptions (Audible Plus and Audible Premium Plus) and audiobook purchases. 

Disney+:  All Disney+ purchases made directly through www.disneyplus.com are eligible, for example, Premier Access purchases and The Disney Bundle. The Disney Bundle includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+. The New York Times:  Eligible purchases for The New York Times include any subscriptions, for example, digital or print news, NYT Cooking, Wirecutter, and New York Times Games, made directly through www.nytimes.com/subscription. Instant Card Number 

Instant Card Number eligibility is based on our ability to instantly authenticate you. If you are eligible for Instant Card Number, you will receive an Instant Card Number that you may be able to use virtually anywhere American Express is accepted and a physical Card will not be required. Independent Travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg

My wife and I have traveled independently to many European countries and, after reading many of the comments in this forum, feel like we may be able to do so in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well, although we feel somewhat less comfortable than the other countries where we have traveled in Europe.

My biggest question is how much we will miss by visiting the main sites without a tour guide. In the other European countries we have visited on our own we have been comfortable and satisfied with the level of knowledge we have gained by studying and visiting on our own, although we believe a tour guide or tour company in any country would normally be able to provide greater insight than visiting a site on our own, but about in Moscow and St. Petersburg?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Unless you speak at least some Russian and read the alphabet it would be difficult without a guide. Very few signs in English especially in Moscow. Also not too many people speak English there.

I visited St Petersburg last Autumn for a protracted period , and did not find it anymore daunting than any other European city . As Ilja says , learning the Cyrillic alphabet is a big plus . I also found that it was fairly easy to grasp . It will , among other things , enable you to read signs with relative ease . I would answer the main part or your question ( about tour guides ) thus - I am not enamored of tour guides or tours. While I only use a tour under duress ( A sites rules prohibiting an independent visit - ie Glasgow School of Art , Municipal House in Prague , etc ) . Doing your own preparation and homework is the best way , in my opinion . My wife and I ventured through St Petersburg with nary a concern ,and made two day trips outside of the central district ( one was twenty five miles away , and no English speakers in sight ) Figuring out the logistical details , did not present any difficulties . While I never use tours , I am an inveterate eavesdropper , have done so many times , and find , that on balance , the information that they impart is fairly elementary . If you want greater detail , they are unlikely to supply it . I also prefer to go at my own pace , not being rushed and being able to dwell on things that most other visitors barely give a passing glance . If you are interested , let me know . Thank you, Steven. I am encouraged by your comments and feel the same way you do about tour groups. We are very much willing to prepare in advance and learn the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to help us have a better experience.

I would be very interested in learning more about your experience in Russia and receiving any additional information you can provide on independent travel there, starting perhaps with obtaining the visa.

I am not opposed to hiring a private or small group guide for a specific site or for a day trip outside St Petersburg and Moscow, but, like you said, I much prefer the freedom of staying at places as long or short as I want and seeing the sites that interest me most. For example, neither my wife nor I are big into shopping, yet most tour itineraries leave afternoon time for just that. Not interested!

Please provide whatever you may feel would be helpful for us.

Having always traveled independently, we thought we could do a better job than any tour. How misguided (pun intended) we were. Now that we have had the experience of having someone native to the area walk us around and explain things through a personal perspective we realize how much we missed. For St. Petersburg I highly recommend http://www.peterswalk.com/tours.html . This is not a traditional guided tour, but an opportunity to receive some orientation to the area as well as insight into the "Russian soul". I think if you did this upon arrival the rest of your time would be much more meaningful. We really liked the http://www.pushka-inn.com . The location is superb (just around the corner from the Hermitage square), the rooms lovely, the included breakfast at the restaurant next door ample and overall an excellent value. It is not cheap, so factor that into your planning.

If you like traveling without a guide in other countries and find this satisfying, the same will be true in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course it's not either/or - you can certainly take a guided walk or boat tour, for instance.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning Cyrillic if you're going on your own. The book I used was Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script, which was great. Russia is indeed a bit more "foreign" than say, Italy. However, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, I found enough English to be able to get by. Many restaurants had English menus and/or English speaking staff, for instance. This was most emphatically not true in Vladimir and Suzdal (two cities in the Golden Ring outside Moscow). I went with my sister, a Russian speaker, and if she hadn't been there, I would have been in big trouble. So, if you want to see places outside these two big cities, use a guided tour (even if just for that part). Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg are huge cities. Coming from New York, I wasn't intimidated, but those not used to a megacity may not be so cavalier (even I found them overwhelming at times, especially Moscow).

I found both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to be helpful, and both to have various errors. Look at both, buy whichever one has a more recent edition, and then be prepared to have to discard some of the advice therein. Also, these places change more quickly than places in Western Europe. Be very careful of outdated advice. For instance, I was there in 2001 and 2010, so I won't give you any specifics on getting a visa - that changes constantly.

Just as a teaser, two things I saw and loved that I doubt would be included in any escorted tour are the Gorky House in Moscow (an Art Nouveau wonder) and the Sheremyetov Palace in St. Petersburg (it's now a museum of musical instruments, and the decor is amazing, particularly in the Etruscan Room).

This is about you and not about Petersburg. Do you like guided tours? We don't and didn't find that a guide added to our experience in China where we did hire private guides mostly for the logistics; it was easy to have someone drive us places. But once at a site, we didn't need the guide. I felt the same way about our 9 nights in Petersburg. We did hire a guide for the trip to the Catherine Palace again for the ease of logistics for us Olds. Having someone pick us up at the apartment and get us in without line ups and shepherd us through the palace steering clear of the tour groups was lovely. But we didn't need commentary because we can read and prepare.

You certainly don't need a guide for the Hermitage (we spent 4 days there), the Russian Museum, the Kazan Cathedral or Church on Spilled Blood or the Faberge Museum. We enjoyed a number of self guided walking tours including a couple from Rick Steves guidebooks. We took the canal cruise suggested by RS that had an English commentator. I would not take one without that as you will be totally clueless. The commentator was not all that good but at least we had some idea what we were seeing. So for people like us who like to do our own thing and can read a guidebook and don't particularly like to be led about, a tour is not needed. If you enjoy tour groups, then go for it. Petersburg is easy to negotiate. It helps if you can read the cyrillic alphabet and it is also useful to have the google translate ap on your phone. We found ourselves translating packages in grocery stores with it and the occasional museum sign or menu. I have one food I need to avoid and so it was handy to have the translator to talk with waiters (I could either show them the sentence, or play it for them or play it to myself and then repeat it to the waiter -- that all worked well)

Dear Russ, I cannot help you with Moscow, but about four years ago, my husband and I went to St Petersburg on our own. But, we did use a private guide for 4 half days. We both feel that our guide absolutely made our trip (we stayed 6 or 7 nights). We used a company owned by Tatyana Chiurikova, www.tour-stpetersburg.com I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I emailed her and we worked out a schedule/ sights that was tailored to our interests. She also offered some recommendations, which we took. The guide will meet you at your hotel. And frequently, at certain places, with the guide, we were able to skip the long entrance lines. We had an half day driving tour of the city (car, driver, & guide). You are taken to & go in places such as Peter & Paul Fortress, some of the cathedrals, etc. We had a half day with the guide at the Hermitage which ensured that we would see the major sights there. And, of course, you can stay after your guide leaves or return another day. Also, we had the guide for Peterhof (a must & go by boat) and Catherine's Palace. I hope that you will go to the website. As I said, our guide made our trip. I am positive that we would have missed quite a bit on our own everyday. And I'm sure we would have wasted a lot of time trying to get to various place.This was the best of both worlds, a guide where needed and plenty of time on our own. I am curious about the lines as we encountered no lines on our trip -- but it was in September. We got tickets for the Hermitage at machines and skipped those lines and our guide for the Catherine Palace which was our only guided experience (as noted before, chosen for the logistics of getting there) had arranged tickets and we didn't have a line, but then we also didn't see lines. We did not find lines at any other site.

Both Moscow and St Petersburg I've done on my own, that is together with the Dear Partner. I can't remember any problem getting where we wanted to go. The Metro systems are well signed, and with a little exercise and patience you can recognize the station names. With a good map and a good guide - we had the Rough Guides - that part of the logistics is solved. The language is a major problem, but the usual tricks of pointing, looking helpless, and making a joke of it all do wonders. I would hate to be led by a guide, but for others it is a comfortable thought.

We also did both cities on our own. I found the DK Eyewitness guide for Moscow has the best map. I used the one from our library (kept the book at home). Took the smaller RS book for St. Petersburg ( his book on northern cities). His map and restaurant ideas were all good. We also downloaded the Google maps in our Android Samsung tablets/phones for both cities and then could get directions to any place we typed in. The blue ball guided us everywhere. I'm sure we missed somethings by not having a guide, but we just enjoy walking around and getting a sense of a place. If you like art, The Hermitage is great. We went 3 times and still missed alot. In St. Peterburg we stayed at the 3 Mosta which we loved (quite and not far from the Church of Spilled Blood.) We also loved the Georgian food in both cities. There's a great Georgian restaurant near the 3 Mosta hotel. We're now in Belarus- very scenic. Enjoy your trip!!
