See-Through Baseball Pants Have Fans, and Brands, Pointing Fingers

A redesign of M.L.B.’s uniforms has put Fanatics and Nike at the center of a debate about performance versus quality in sportswear.

At the end of this month, Major League Baseball will officially commence its 2024 season, and with spring training already in full swing, the chatter among hard-core fans and casual observers has been unusually spirited. In theory, that would be great for M.L.B. as it seeks to expand its reach amid a prolonged decline in the sport’s popularity and cultural cachet that was offset some with a series of popular rule changes last year.

Unfortunately, the conversation has not been about the New York Yankees trading for Juan Soto or the Los Angeles Dodgers signing Shohei Ohtani . Instead, people cannot stop talking about the league’s new uniforms, specifically the pants, which leave little to the imagination. The issue of fabric so sheer it seemed transparent cropped up in late February when players began having their photos taken at spring training, which gave fans — and some players — their first glimpse of M.L.B.’s new uniforms, which were designed by Nike and produced by the sports memorabilia behemoth Fanatics.

“Fanatics is going to hell,” an X user said in reference to a particularly explicit photo of a San Diego Padres player bending over on the field.

The transparency of the pants quickly became an online sensation .

“Buying my wife Fanatics baseball pants instead of lingerie,” read an X post with more than 33,000 likes. “Whenever I’m nervous public speaking I just pretend people in the audience are wearing Fanatics baseball pants,” another person joked .

The problems with M.L.B.’s new uniforms extend beyond the lewd pants. The league signed a 10-year, $1 billion deal with Nike and Fanatics for the design and manufacture of its uniforms in 2020, but it was only this year that the uniforms underwent a considerable redesign, with less intricate details and revamped fabric.

“We worked closely with players, teams and the league to create the most advanced uniforms in the history of M.L.B., which are lighter and more flexible,” Nike said in a statement to The New York Times. “We will continue to work with M.L.B., the players and our manufacturing partner to address player uniforms.”

The pants, it should be noted, are made from the same material as they were last season. A popular theory online is that the transparency may have been enhanced by the bright lights used on team picture days. But even if that is the case, there is a major difference this year: The pants are no longer being tailored to individual players. Instead, players were given four cuts to choose from: slim, standard, athletic and muscular. (Nike scanned the bodies of 300 major league players to create the various options.)

The general feeling, nevertheless, is that the new uniforms are a huge step back in terms of quality. Some of the issues could be resolved by the time the regular season begins, but the complaints are myriad, with one social media user pointing out that two players on the same team were wearing jerseys with different sleeve cuffs.

Daniel Bard, a relief pitcher for the Colorado Rockies, said in a telephone interview that when he first joined the league in 2009, the uniform he was given was the nicest one he had ever worn. “You could literally get it perfectly tailored to your body,” he said. “They were pretty damn near perfect.”

Not anymore.

“It’s a different material. It’s not as soft,” Mr. Bard said. “They changed the names. They look funny — too small and too curved. The patches on the arms look like they’re iron-on.”

Mr. Bard finds the idea that the uniforms were redesigned for performance reasons perplexing. “It’s not like shaving two or three ounces off a uniform is going to drastically change our performance,” he said. “None of the players asked for this. We’re not Olympic sprinters.”

M.L.B. tested out the new uniforms during the All-Star Game last July, and reports at the time were mostly positive.

“They can say whatever they want. They can be like, Oh, 80 percent of guys loved them,” Mr. Bard said. “We don’t really know. We weren’t talking a formal survey or anything.”

“Players are always a little reluctant to change,” said Andrew Miller, a former All-Star pitcher who retired in 2021. “Anything new that has to be tinkered with is always going to be a challenge.”

Even though Nike was responsible for the uniform redesign and M.L.B. approved it, baseball fans have overwhelmingly blamed Fanatics. That is despite the fact that the league’s uniforms have been manufactured in the same factory since the early 2000s with no reported issues before this year.

“We’re purely doing exactly as we’ve been told, and we’ve been told we’re doing everything exactly right,” Michael Rubin, the founder of Fanatics, said during a sports analytics conference at M.I.T. this month. Despite that, he said the company was receiving a majority of the criticism. “So that’s not fun,” he added.

Fanatics has become a target for many because it manufactures and sells the on-field attire and officially licensed gear for most of the major professional sports leagues in the United States. The company has been sued several times , with many contending that it has a monopoly over sports memorabilia. The M.L.B. gear, which Nike designs and Fanatics manufactures and sells, is also not cheap — a 2024 jersey goes for about $175 , but certain editions cost almost $400 . The prices are similarly high for Nike/Fanatics replica jerseys from the N.F.L. and the N.B.A.

Matt Powell, a senior adviser at BCE Consulting who has been researching the sports retail business for more than two decades, said that the biggest problem with M.L.B.’s uniforms this season was in how they were marketed. “They did a poor job of selling it,” Mr. Powell said. “When players came into spring training, they suddenly got a different jersey than they were used to, and nobody explained its benefits, why the changes were made or what work they did to develop the product. If Nike had done a better job of communicating the changes, this would not have become a flashpoint.”

The uniform debacle is also indicative of how sportswear is changing to become more performance-oriented, sometimes at the expense of aesthetics and quality. Nike isn’t even the only athletic apparel company to have a see-through-pants scandal. In 2013, investors filed a class-action lawsuit against Lululemon, whose stock price plummeted after a recall on its sheer black yoga pants.

“You’ve had this evolution of fabrics,” said Todd Radom, who wrote the book “Winning Ugly: A Visual History of the Most Bizarre Baseball Uniforms Ever Worn” and personally designed the logos and uniforms for multiple M.L.B. teams. “They went to synthetic fabrics in the early 1970s. There’s been this arms race of getting lighter and cooler.”

“The Nikes of the world have their proprietary stuff that they want to put out there,” Mr. Radom added. “It moves product.”

In spite of all the jokes, and all the complaints, M.L.B.’s best course of action may be to remain patient.

“It’s happening across all sports,” said Chris Creamer, who wrote a book with Mr. Radom and has operated a website about sports logos and uniforms since 1997. “In basketball, when Nike first introduced their new uniforms, they were ripping. Ultimately, what ends up happening is there’s a big uproar when it first comes out. And then within a few weeks or months, everyone seems to forget that this change ever happened.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that the brutal attack at a Moscow concert hall on Friday was carried out by “radical Islamists.”

“We know that the crime was committed by radical Islamists, whose ideology the Islamic world itself has been fighting for centuries,” Putin said.

He also again suggested that Ukraine was to blame for the attack.

“It is also necessary to answer the question why the terrorists tried to go to Ukraine after committing a crime, who was waiting for them there? It is clear that those who support the Kyiv regime do not want to be accomplices of terror and sponsors of terrorism, but there are really a lot of questions,” he said in a meeting via videoconference with government officials, special services and law enforcement agencies on measures taken after the terrorist attack, according to the Kremlin.

“We know by whose hands this atrocity was committed against Russia and its people, and we are interested in who the instigator is,” Putin said.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the massacre and released graphic footage showing the incident – but the Kremlin has alleged, without evidence, that the perpetrators planned to flee to Ukraine. Kyiv has vehemently denied involvement and called the Kremlin’s claims “absurd.”

Putin on Saturday also claimed that a “window” had been prepared for the attackers to escape to Ukraine. He did not provide evidence.

Death toll in Moscow concert hall attack rises to 139, Russian official says

Two more people have been confirmed dead following a brutal attack at a Moscow concert hall on Friday, taking the death toll to at least 139 killed, a senior Russian official said on Monday.

“Initial results of the investigation indicate that the attack was carefully planned and prepared,” Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, said in a live TV broadcast.

Here's the numbers he provided:

Deaths: 139 people killed. 137 died on the spot, two died in hospitals.
Identified: 75 of 139 people have been identified, including three children.
Cause of death: 40 people died from gunshot wounds, two people died from a combination of gunshot and stab wounds. As a result of the fire, 45 people died from exposure to high temperature and combustion products.

US says that it warned Russia in early March of possible terror attack despite ambassador's denial

The US State Department said Monday that the United States had warned Russia in early March about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow “potentially targeting large gatherings, including concerts."

Spokesperson Matthew Miller was responding to a denial by the Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov that Moscow received any warning.

“We gave them that private warning consistent with our duty to warn ... when we see or when we gather intelligence of terrorist attacks or potential terrorist attacks,” Miller said at a press briefing.

He noted the United States on March 7 warned US citizens to avoid large gatherings in Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had described the security warning as “provocative” and “outright blackmail” before the attack.

“It was because of that warning that we passed on to the Russian government that we issued a security warning on March 7, where we again said to US citizens that we had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow… potentially targeting large gatherings including concerts,” Miller added.

All four suspects in the Crocus City concert hall attack case have been remanded into pre-trial detention until May 22. They are charged with committing a terrorist act, according to the courts of general jurisdiction of the city of Moscow, which under the Russian Criminal Code is punishable by up to life imprisonment.

Three of the defendants pled guilty to all charges, according to state media news agency TASS.

All four are from Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic, and had been in Russia on either temporary or expired visas.

On Monday afternoon, authorities said they had identified an additional three people who they believed were involved in the attack — two brothers and a father.

Friday's attack killed at least 137 people. The attack is Russia's deadliest in two decades .

Russian social media channels show apparent torture of Crocus City suspects

Video footage and still images have appeared on Russian social media that appear to show the violent interrogation of several of the men alleged to have taken part in the deadly terror attack on a concert hall outside Moscow Friday.

One video appears to show one of the suspects, Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, being held on the ground while having part of his ear cut off by a camouflage-wearing interrogator. Rachabalizoda later appeared in court with a heavily bandaged ear.

The Grey Zone, a pro-Kremlin Telegram channel, published a still photograph that claims to show the electrocution of one of the detained suspects.

Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of Russian state propaganda network RT, posted a video that appears to show the interrogation of another suspect, Shamsidin Fariduni, who is shown stammering and shaking as he is questioned by interrogators off camera. Fariduni subsequently appeared in court with a bruised face.

CNN asked the Kremlin about the “visible signs of violence” committed against the suspects, but spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment.

Russian Investigative Committee asks court to detain three more in connection with concert hall attack

The Russian Investigative Committee says it has established that more people were involved in Friday's Crocus City terror attack beyond the four men alleged to have carried out the attack.

“According to the investigation, in order to commit a terrorist act, Shamsidin Fariduni recruited Aminchon Islomov into the organized group no later than January 2024, and Dilovar Islomov no later than March 11, 2024,” the Investigative Committee said on Telegram.

The three individuals are two brothers and their father, Russian state media agency TASS said. Investigators are asking the Basmanny Court of Moscow to choose a preventive measure for the three defendants, the court told TASS.

“Three more materials were received regarding the accused Islomov Aminchon Isroilovich, Islomov Dilovar Isroilovich, as well as the suspect Islomov IsroilIbragimovich,” the court said, according to TASS. Fariduni was one of those detained in Bryansk Saturday. Both Aminchon and Dilovar Islomov appeared in Basmanny court in Moscow Monday. State news agency TASS said that Dilovar Islomov is a citizen of the Russian Federation and works as a taxi driver, citing court documents.

Russian state news agency RIA said Dilovar Islomov “owned the Renault car in which the terrorists fled the crime scene, sold it in February, and the compulsory motor liability insurance remained on him,” citing a source familiar with the situation.

Here's what to know about ISIS-K, the group linked to the Moscow concert hall terror attack

ISIS, also known as the Islamic State group, claimed responsibility for Friday’s deadly assault on a concert venue in Moscow, releasing graphic footage purporting to show its gunmen carrying out what was Russia’s worst terror attack in decades.

Here's what we know about the group:

When was it formed?: ISIS-K was formed in 2015 and has been active in Afghanistan , Pakistan and Iran. It is a branch of ISIS, the terror group that emerged in Syria and Iraq and, at its peak, controlled a huge stretch of territory. Five years since the fall of ISIS’ self-proclaimed caliphate across Iraq and Syria, the group has morphed into a terror network with cells spread around the world, including in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Southeast Asia.

How is it linked to ISIS? The connection between the groups is not entirely clear. The affiliates share an ideology and tactics, but the depth of their relationship – such as the chain of command and control – has never been fully established.

What is its ideology?: Like its parent organization, ISIS-K aims to create a “pure Islamic state,” according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) – describing the group’s vision of a “global, transnational caliphate” governed by Sharia law.

Why attack Russia?: ISIS has a longstanding animosity against Russia and Putin, several experts told CNN. “Russia has been at the top or near the top of the list of ISIS for many years,” said Daniel Byman, director of Georgetown University’s security studies program.

Russians return to site of Moscow terror attack to offer condolences

Four days after Friday's Moscow terror attack, some 200 people gathered at the site of the attack Monday morning, offering condolences to the victims, a CNN team in Moscow reports.

While the crowd was much smaller than the numbers who were at the Crocus City hall on Sunday, a steady flow of people were bringing flowers and stuffed toys to the scene, according to the CNN team. Candles were also laid next to the memorial.

A Russian Red Cross tent is set up at the location to provide psychological help. The CNN team said volunteers are helping people with directions on where to pick up belongings or cars left on Friday. The main entrance of the Crocus hall remains barricaded off, with police buses and emergency vehicles clearing rubble. Search operations are still ongoing.

The victims: Moscow's Department of Health published an updated list of those still hospitalized in the capital's medical institutions after the attack, consisting of 76 names.

At least 137 people died in the attack after gunmen opened fire on people inside the hall, and set fire to the building. Of them, at least three were children. President Vladimir Putin declared Sunday a day of national mourning, vowing to punish the perpetrators and expressing condolences to those who had lost loved ones.

Tajikistan reiterates readiness to cooperate with Russia against terrorism after Moscow concert attack

Following the identification of the four men charged with carrying out the attack in Moscow on Friday as Tajik nationals, Tajikistan has reiterated its readiness to fight terrorism together with Russia.

The Russian state news agency TASS published video Monday showing Tajik Prime Minister Kokhir Rasulzoda writing a note in the book of condolences at the Russian embassy in Dushanbe.

State-run RIA Novosti reported on its Telegram channel that Tajikistan is providing assistance to the Russian investigation “in the case of the terrorist attack in Crocus,” citing a source in Tajikistan’s special services. It reported that a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry had confirmed that “Tajikistan specialists are providing assistance to investigators from Russia in connection with the arrest of citizens of the republic in the case of a terrorist attack.”

On Sunday, the Kremlin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had spoken with his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon, who had expressed “deep condolences and feelings of solidarity with the Russian people in connection with the death of civilians as a result of the vile terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall."

“During the conversation, Vladimir Putin and Emomali Rahmon noted that special services and relevant departments of Russia and Tajikistan are working closely in the field of countering terrorism, and this work will be intensified,” the Kremlin said.

Just hours after announcing the dates, the singer noted on Instagram that all the shows were already sold out .

At press time Charli had not yet announced the release date for BRAT , her sixth full-length album, though she did recently reveal that it is out this summer, contains 15 songs and is 41:23 long. The follow-up to her 2022 album Crash has been advanced by the uptempo first single, "Von Dutch."

Speaking to Billboard at this year's 2024 Women in Music event, Charli said that BRAT is a club record meant to evoke the illegal London rave scene of the early 2000s where she started performing as a 14 and 15-year-old, produced from a tight collection of sounds to create "this unique minimalism that is very loud and bold."

She also said that the album is "very direct" eschewing "metaphor and flowery lyricism" for language that is closer to the way she talks to her friends in text messages. "This record is all the things I would talk about with my friends, said exactly how I would say them. It's in ways very aggressive and confrontational, but also very conversational and personal," she said. "And not in that boring way where artists are like, ‘This is my most personal record.' To me, it feels like listening to a conversation with a friend.

Rees-Zammit, a European rugby star, will occupy Kansas City's single extra roster spot for international players. This is also the first NFL season in which teams will have an extra 17th practice squad spot during the regular season for international players, which increases Rees-Zammit's chances of earning opportunities on offense. He figures to try and translate at running back and/or wide receiver, and his best chances to contribute stand to be on special teams, especially given the league's new kick return format.

Minister Hussen wraps up tour of Atlantic Canada focused on supporting a robust international development sector

Today, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, concluded a tour in Atlantic Canada with several engagements focused on the Canadian international development sector.

March 28, 2024 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

Kicking off the tour in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Minister Hussen, accompanied by Joanne Thompson, Member of Parliament for St. John’s East, met with professionals from the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. They discussed the Institute’s development footprint and its marine-simulation technologies, including the world’s largest flume tank, which is used to evaluate fishing equipment. He also held discussions with students and alumni of the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment of $24.5 million in funding for the latest iteration of the program. Minister Hussen also met with philanthropic sector organizations, academics and Canadians to discuss impacts of Canada’s international assistance.

In Halifax and Sackville, Nova Scotia, Minister Hussen met with Canadian private sector stakeholders and civil society organization partners, including members of the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC), to discuss priorities related to Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate action.

While in Halifax, Minister Hussen, accompanied by Lena Metlege Diab, Member of Parliament for Halifax West, also visited the Department of International Development Studies of Dalhousie University and met with faculty members of the university’s Office of Government and Global Relations to learn about their international development programming. Later, he spoke with students and alumni of the IYIP and the International Aboriginal Youth Internship initiative about their interests and career goals in international development.

In Moncton, New Brunswick, Minister Hussen met with francophone organizations and institutions to learn about their international development efforts and programs as well as their engagement in La Francophonie.

In Fredericton, Minister Hussen was accompanied by Jenica Atwin, Member of Parliament for Fredericton and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indigenous Services, while visiting New Brunswick Community College. They heard directly from students about opportunities for promoting international development and global citizenship, their career aspirations and experiences, and achieving the SDGs.

The singer-songwriter will kick off the European portion of her world tour in Paris in May, which will continue throughout the summer. From there, she'll return to North America to tour Canada and a few remaining US cities in the fall. If you're hoping to attend, we've compiled all of the details of The Eras Tour, including how to get Taylor Swift tour tickets.

Swift's Eras Tour has taken the world by storm since March 2023. The three-plus-hour tour features hits from each of Swift's album eras, from "Lover" to her recent Grammy Award-winning "Midnights." Each show also features surprise songs and occasional guests, so fans never quite know what they're in for. Swift will release her latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," in April, but it's unknown if any of those songs will make their way to the tour setlist.

Getting tickets has become its own battle and many fans have waited hours in the Ticketmaster queue to hopefully snag some seats, if they could get a presale ticket code in the first place. While Swift continues to extend the tour, including new US dates, tickets remain hard to come by.

Below, we've put together a guide on everything to know about The Eras Tour, including the tour schedule, ticket purchasing details, resale ticket prices, and the concert film streaming options . You can also peruse resale vendors like StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

Taylor Swift international tour dates

The Eras Tour international dates resume on May 9 in Paris. The European tour will run until August 20 in London. UK prices are listed in pounds, and start times vary from city to city. US dates start in October and can be found under the following table.

Taylor Swift North American tour dates

The Eras tour will return to the US on October 18 in Miami. In addition to the Miami shows, Swift will perform multiple dates in New Orleans and Indianapolis. On November 14, Swift will head to Canada for several shows in Toronto and Vancouver. All North American shows start at 7 p.m. local time.

How to buy tickets for Taylor Swift's 2024 tour

Original standard tickets for Taylor Swift's 2024 sold out long ago for both international and domestic dates. All US tickets and many international tickets were sold through Ticketmaster , although select international locations used different services.

Tickets for most dates are available on resale websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats . These are generally higher-priced than the originals, which are no longer available. Keep in mind that some countries have rules regarding reselling tickets.

How much are Taylor Swift tickets?

Ticket prices vary by date and location. International resale tickets tend to be a bit cheaper than US resale tickets. It's worth noting that some of the cheapest tickets have restricted views.

StubHub's cheapest European tickets range from $392 (Madrid, Spain, on May 29) to £978 (London, United Kingdom, on June 22). The latter is around $1,248 in USD. The lowest prices for most shows are around $450 to $1,000. On Vivid Seats , the cheapest tickets for these dates go for $549 and $683, respectively.

When it comes to North American shows, the cheapest StubHub tickets range from $1,045 (Vancouver, Canada, on December 8) to $2,081 (Miami, Florida, on October 19). Most of the cheapest tickets are priced between $1,200 and $1,800. On Vivid Seats, the cheapest Taylor Swift tickets on these dates start at $1,133 and $2,212, respectively. The two resale vendors generally have similarly priced offerings, but this varies from show to show.

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.

A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River. A water search for six missing workers turned to a recovery effort Tuesday night.

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.
