How to Prepare for Langtang Valley Trek?

Proper preparation is key to having an enjoyable and successful trek in the Langtang Valley. Here are some tips to get you ready, both physically and logistically:

Start training your body months in advance by hiking progressively longer distances on weekends. Build up to comfortably walking 8-10 hours and 15-20 km per day with elevation gains. Mix in strength training and cardio during the week. This will prevent injuries and allow you to fully immerse yourself in the trek.

Work with a guide to arrange permits, flights, and logistics. They can customize the itinerary and pace to match your fitness level. Make sure you have insurance that covers altitude sickness for emergency evacuation.

Once in Kathmandu, take it easy to acclimatize for 1-2 days. Stay hydrated and limit alcohol intake. Consider getting a massage to limber up. Purchase any last supplies like trekking poles or medication.

Pack appropriate gear like broken-in hiking boots, performance socks, quick-dry clothing, layers, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, and daypack. The lower elevations can be quite warm. Bring cash for tea houses, tips, and entry fees.

On the trail, pace yourself gradually. Stay hydrated and listen to your body. Move slowly and rest often to avoid altitude sickness. Follow your guide’s lead in terms of pace and rest days.

With some preparation in your hometown, Kathmandu, and on the trail, you’ll be ready to make the most of your Langtang Valley adventure. Proper training, packing, and guidance from experts sets you up for an amazing Himalayan trek!

LANGTANG VALLEY TREKKING ROUTE //

We have created a detailed Langtang Valley trekking map to accompany this guide. The trekking route between Syabrubesi and Kyanjin Gompa, the day hiking routes to Kyanjin Ri and Tsergo Ri, and the stats for each section are all marked on the map. Villages and tea shops are also marked, as well as key sights and practical info such as checkpoints. Guesthouses as per our own trek itinerary are marked, including prices and services, phone numbers, and a copy of the menu. Photos are included with almost every pin. You can use the digital map online, or download it for offline use with a mapping app such as Organic Maps, Maps.me or Gaia GPS. This is very helpful for navigation assistance on the trail and allows you to quickly pinpoint key places and services along the way and calculate distance and elevation differences between destinations. Note that while we’ve tried to be as accurate as possible when recording and mapping the route, changes on the ground are inevitable, and this map should not be solely relied upon for navigation.

LANGTANG VALLEY TREKKING ITINERARY

In the itinerary table below and in the detailed trail notes throughout this guide, we outline an 8 day trek starting and ending in Syabrubesi (with an extra 2 days for travelling to and from Kathmandu). We feel this is an ideal itinerary* for the Langtang Valley trekking route, ascending to altitude at a pace which allows you to acclimatise slowly, and varying the route on the way up and down the valley. While this is the route we suggest you follow, the below trail notes will still be useful if your itinerary differs at all, as we break down each day into sections with individual stats and route descriptions.

TRAVEL DAY: DRIVE to SYABRUBESI

Travel day:, drive to syabrubesi, 5.5 – 9 hours.

Syabrubesi is the trailhead for the Langtang Valley trek, a small town approximately 115 km north of Kathmandu. You can get there by public bus or private jeep and the journey takes around 5.5 – 9 hours, depending on your mode of transport. The road is narrow and twisting at points with occasional steep drop-offs, and includes some bumpy sections on rough non-tarmac roads.

Whether you travel by bus or private jeep, you will stop for lunch at a local restaurant (with a toilet) and then again at the Langtang National Park entrance checkpoint, where you can pay your entrance fee and your bag will be checked.

Syabrubesi itself has numerous guesthouses lining the main street, along with a few small shops. It’s common for people to stay overnight here at the start and end of their Langtang Valley trek.

DAY 1: SYABRUBESI → SHERPAGAON

Langtang route day 1:, syabrubesi → sherpagaon, 9.8 km | + 1645 m / – 497 m | 6.5 hours, + 1645 m / – 497 m.

The day starts with an 800 metre ascent to Khangjim, passing through an attractive pine forest. From here, the climbing continues through the small village of Surka and a lovely forest section, before joining a rocky dirt road with open valley views. The final stretch to Sherpagaon follows both dirt road and trail, and is mostly downhill or gently undulating. Sherpagaon itself is an attractive hillside village with a mix of homes and teahouses.

Note that if you prefer to follow the ‘classic’ Langtang Valley trekking route – directly up the valley alongside the Langtang Khola (river) to Rimche or Lama Hotel – you can follow our Day 9 trail notes in reverse.

PLACES ON THE ROUTE

The table below details the tea shops, villages, and services available along the route from Syabrubesi to Sherpagaon. The distances and times noted cover the sections between the stops, not the total from the start.

Syabrubesi → Khangjim

3.9 km  | + 889 m / – 91  m | 3 hours, + 889 m / – 91  m.

There is a passport and permit checkpoint as you leave Syabrubesi, which you must stop at. From here the trail leads down the road to a suspension bridge over the Bhote Koshi. Turn left after crossing the bridge and follow the trail uphill, keeping left at the next junction (there is a yellow trekking signpost). The trail climbs past a few huts, and about 520 metres beyond and 100 metres above the bridge, it starts to switch back up the hillside. It’s easy to miss this turn off, so look out for it.

From here the trail zigzags up the hill on an obvious path, entering a lovely pine forest at around 1750 m. When the trail meets the road at 1950 m, follow the road around two bends then rejoin the trekking trail just below Tsering’s Tea Shop. Stop here for tea or continue up the trail to rejoin the road at about 2220 m.

Follow the road to Khangjim, where there are a number of guesthouses. There is also a mill in a small shack below a water wheel; if it’s in use you can peek inside and watch the process.

Khangjim → Sherpagaon

5.9 km  | + 752 m / – 408  m | 3.5 hours, + 752 m / – 408  m.

Continue uphill through and beyond Khangjim, climbing another 150 metres or so in elevation to reach a couple of guesthouses at Surka, where food and rooms are available. This is a good place to stop for lunch if you didn’t eat in Khangjim.

The route continues up through Surka, turning right towards the cluster of prayer flags in the forest, visible from the village. The forest is beautiful and a pleasure to walk in. You’ll climb around 200 metres to emerge at a viewpoint looking over to Thulo Syabru and the mountains above. A second viewpoint, bedecked with prayer flags, follows soon after.

A moody afternoon view across the valley to the hillside village of Thulo Syabru

Shortly after the second viewpoint you’ll join a rocky dirt road and follow this for 2.3 km, almost all the way to Sherpagaon. It’s not at all busy though, and is pretty nice as far as road walking goes. There is a bit of climbing, some downhill, and then mostly gentle undulation, with views across the valley as you go. There’s a chance you’ll see langur monkeys around here too.

Approaching Sherpagaon, leave the road and follow the trail down some steps to the right. This leads to a metal bridge, and the trail then works its way around the hillside to Sherpagaon. There is a mix of teahouses and homes in the village, along with wonderful mountain and valley views.

DAY 2: SHERPAGAON → THANGSHYAP

Langtang route day 2:, sherpagaon  →  thangshyap, 11.4 km | + 1343 m / – 761 m | 6.5 hours, + 1343 m / – 761 m.

The day starts with a narrow hillside trail to Rimche, where you join the main Langtang Valley trekking route and can expect to meet many more hikers, as well as mules. The climb from Rimche to Thangshyap is mostly gradual with just a few steeper sections. You’ll spend much of the day trekking in beautiful forest, with the mighty Langtang Khola ever present. There are numerous guesthouses to stop at along the way for tea or lunch, and good opportunities to spot langur monkeys, yaks, and mountain goats. All in all, a very enjoyable day on the trail.

Elevation profile and figures for the Sherpagaon to Thangshyap section of the Langtang Valley trek

The table below details the tea shops, villages, and services available along the route from Sherpagaon to Thangshyap. The distances and times noted cover the sections between the stops, not the total from the start.

Sherpagaon → Lama Hotel

3.75 km | + 402 m / – 514 m | 2 hours, + 402 m / – 514 m.

From Sherpagaon, a narrow and undulating trail leads around the hillside before descending to the small teahouse village of Rimche. It’s a lovely walk with great views. Rimche is where the trail from Sherpagaon meets the classic Langtang Valley route, coming up from Bamboo and the Langtang Khola (river) below. There are just two seasonal teahouses here.

Leaving Rimche the trail continues through a beautiful forest section with bamboo and fern-covered trees. It’s a 25 – 30 minute gentle walk up the narrowing valley to Lama Hotel, where you’ll meet the Langtang Khola. Lama Hotel has around eight teahouses, mostly traditional stone buildings. There is no phone signal, WiFi, or mains electricity here, with limited solar the only power source.

Lama Hotel → Thangshyap

7.65 km | + 950 m / – 247 m | 4.5 hours, + 950 m / – 247 m.

The climb from Lama Hotel is a bit steep initially, although it’s an attractive trail through yet more beautiful forest. The ascent continues, at times gradually and at other times quite steeply up stone steps. You’ll be following the powerful river the whole way, with impressively large boulders jutting out of the riverbed here and there. From Lama Hotel, it’s 2.7 km (around 1.5 hours) till you reach the lone Riverside Hotel at Gumnachok, a good spot to stop for lunch or tea by the river.

Leaving Riverside Hotel, a wide stony trail leads through open forest. After about 15 minutes you’ll reach a single teahouse at Chhunama, Hotel Woodland, and after a further 20 minutes or so you’ll come to the metal Dav Bridge. There is a trail marked on some maps that continues up the left side of the valley, but this is the old route and as there are landslides on this side, you should cross the bridge and carry on up the right side.

A view up the tree-lined Langtang Khola (River) towards distant peaks while crossing the Dav Bridge

Looking up the Langtang Khola towards distant peaks while crossing the Dav Bridge

The trail climbs through forest and meets another smaller wooden bridge over a stream. From here, a steep climb is followed by a gentle incline through open pastures filled with rhododendron trees, which will be blooming in spring. You’ll reach a couple of stone buildings with red roofs, marked as ‘spring and yak curd’ on OpenStreetMap, where there’s a good chance you’ll see your first yaks of the trek.

A metal bridge leads you across the river before the trail climbs briefly to Ghodatabela. This is a small settlement with just two basic teahouses, plus a permit checkpoint. From here a narrow trail climbs gently, passing through low trees and bushes where there’s a chance to see langur monkeys and mountain goats.

The route crosses another small wooden bridge and then climbs steeply on a switchback trail, the final short section to Thangshyap. This teahouse village has around five guesthouses (and we HIGHLY recommend the dal bhat, and hospitality, at Summit Guest House!).

DAY 3: THANGSHYAP →  LANGTANG

Langtang route day 3:, thangshyap →  langtang, 4 km | + 402 m / – 142 m | 1.5 – 2 hours, + 402 m / – 142 m, 1.5 – 2 hours.

The route from Thangshyap to Langtang marks a big change in scenery, the trail leading gradually up the open valley with imposing mountains rising either side. It’s a short and straightforward day, where you’ll pass a couple of lone tea shops and the teahouse village of Gumba, cross a rocky landslide area, and arrive in Langtang by lunchtime.

Elevation profile and figures for the Thangshyap to Langtang section of the Langtang Valley trek

The table below details the tea shops, villages, and services available along the route from Thangshyap to Langtang. The distances and times noted cover the sections between the stops, not the total from the start.

From Thangshyap, it’s a fairly gentle climb up the valley on a stony, dirt trail that crosses an open hillside. The views are wonderful. You’ll reach a lone teahouse after about 15 minutes, a basic guesthouse offering rooms and food. On a clear day you can see Tsergo Ri (4985 m) in the far distance – look for the tallest mountain in the middle of the valley. The summit of Tsergo Ri is likely the highest point you’ll reach on your Langtang Valley trek.

The trail curves around a dry waterfall/riverbed, passes a chorten, then arrives at the cute and colourful Chyamki tea shop and bakery, about 15 minutes beyond the last lone teahouse. It’s a further 35 minutes or so to the medium-sized teahouse village of Gumba, passing another chorten on the way.

From Gumba you can clearly see the expansive landslide that occurred during the 2015 earthquake, a landslide that buried and destroyed much of the village of Langtang. Today, new guesthouses and homes have been built further up the hillside, overlooking the landslide from the opposite side to Gumba.

Looking across to the village of Langtang from the Gumba side of the landslide, with snow-capped Tsergo Ri (4985 m) left of centre in the frame

You need to cross the landslide to reach Langtang village, following an obvious trail marked by cairns. After crossing a small wooden bridge over a stream, the trail climbs a bit steeply then leaves the landslide area behind. There are a number of mani walls at the entrance to Langtang – be sure to always walk on the left side of these (and chorten) as per the local custom. In the village you’ll find many guesthouses as well as local homes.

There is a nice bakery in town too – Himalayan Bakery – with a proper coffee machine and baked goodies like apple pie, brownies, cinnamon buns, cookies, and more. The owner, Mapsing, is very friendly. They also have free WiFi (hotspot from mobile data).

DAY 4: LANGTANG → KYANJIN GOMPA

Langtang route day 4:, langtang → kyanjin gompa, 6.5 km | + 495 m / – 86 m | 3 hours, + 495 m / – 86 m.

Another half day’s walk, the scenery on this section is wonderful, with beautiful mountain, glacier and river views. There is also a succession of impressive mani walls, plus chortens and stupas aplenty. The walk is straightforward, ascending gradually for the most part.

Elevation profile and figures for the Langtang to Kyanjin Gompa section of the Langtang Valley trek

The table below details the tea shops, villages, and services available along the route from Langtang to Kyanjin Gompa. The distances and times noted cover the sections between the stops, not the total from the start.

As you leave Langtang there is a steepish climb to the school and chorten beyond, after which there is mostly a gradual ascent to Mundu, passing a number of impressively long mani walls and chorten. Mundu is a medium sized local village with a mix of teahouses and homes. Continuing through the village you’ll soon enter Sindum, which is more or less just a continuation of Mundu. There are a couple of teahouses here, plus a little coffee shop with an espresso machine.

The next section follows a narrow trail across the hillside, passing areas of thorny bushes and big boulders, with grazing pastures nearby. Tucked behind a large rock is the tiny Hard Rock Cafe, a tea shop offering the usual drinks, including seabuckthorn juice.

The trail continues climbing gently with wonderful views of the mountains ahead, and runs alongside the Langtang Khola for a while. You’ll reach a couple of small tea shops and shortly after there is a succession of prayer wheels set in a stream. A painted rock sign tells you to stick to the left path, and from here to just before Kyanjin Gompa, the routes going up and down the valley diverge.

Following the left path you’ll come to a large white stupa and then the local hydroelectric station which serves Kyanjin Gompa, Langtang, and the villages in between. Soon you’ll cross a suspension bridge, offering a fantastic view of Kimshung Glacier to your left as you cross. From here, it’s just a short walk to Kyanjin Gompa, with your first view of the colourful village coming into sight at the top of a knoll, just beyond the ‘Himalayan Hilton’ sign.

There are many guesthouses, some local homes, a yak cheese factory, a few bakeries, and a small monastery (Kyanjin Gompa, giving the village its name) with colourful carved woodwork and beautiful paintings inside. Snowy peaks in multiple directions provide a spectacular backdrop.

DAY 5: KYANJIN RI (4586 m) DAY HIKE

Langtang route day 5:, kyanjin ri (4586 m) day hike, 4.5 km | + 730 m / – 730 m | 4.5 hours, + 730 m / – 730 m.

A fantastic day hike with excellent views of snowy peaks and numerous glaciers. The lower viewpoint (4300 m) is rewarding enough, but if you have time and energy, it’s definitely worth continuing to the upper viewpoint (4586 m) for even better views. Pack plenty of water and lunch from your guesthouse so you can hang out for as long as you like and enjoy the views.

Kyanjin Gompa →  Kyanjin Ri Lower Viewpoint (4300 m)

1.2 km | + 441 m | 1.5 hours.

The trail for Kyanjin Ri begins behind the Holyland Guesthouse on the northern edge of the village and starts climbing immediately. It is steep for most of the way, zigzagging up the hillside towards the lower viewpoint, situated on a rocky outcrop festooned with prayer flags. The views are fantastic, looking down over Kyanjin Gompa and the green-blue glacial lake reservoir of the local hydroelectric station, with towering snowy peaks all around. Expect it to take around 1.5 hours to reach the viewpoint (4300 m). Hiking up in the early morning is a good idea, when the skies are generally clear and before the wind starts, although sunset can also be beautiful from here (just be sure to pack warm gear and a head torch for the descent).

Kyanjin Ri Lower Viewpoint (4300 m) → Kyanjin Ri Higher Viewpoint (4586 m)

0.85 km | + 279 m | 1.5 hours.

From the lower viewpoint you can continue up to the higher viewpoint, a further 1.5 hours or so. The trail is clearly visible on the ridge line ahead. It’s a little steep in parts, and there are some sections that come close to the edge. However, besides the higher elevation it is less challenging than the climb from Kyanjin Gompa to the first viewpoint. The 360° mountain views are spectacular and there are four glaciers in sight.

Kyanjin Ri Higher Viewpoint (4586 m) → Kyanjin Gompa

2.45 km | + 10 m / – 730 m | 1.5 hours, + 10 m / – 730 m.

From the upper viewpoint (4586 m) you can retrace your steps all the way back to the village, or make a loop and return to Kyanjin Gompa via the valley to the east (a less steep trail). To take this route, head northeast on the narrow trail to Kyanjin Pass and follow the path as it starts down the valley from the pass. There is also an obvious trail leading downhill to the right before reaching the pass, a shortcut that joins the other trail in the valley. Keep heading down the valley and you will eventually join the trail you ascended, about 100 metres above Kyangjin Gompa.

DAY 6: TSERGO RI (4965 m) DAY HIKE

Langtang route day 6:, tsergo ri (4965 m) day hike, 9.3 km | + 1154 m / – 1154 m | 8 hours, + 1154 m / – 1154 m.

At 4965 m, this is the highest point most Langtang Valley trekkers will reach. It’s a challenging but highly rewarding day hike from Kyanjin Gompa, climbing over 1100 metres to reach the flags atop Tsergo Ri, with spectacular views throughout. If there’s snow on the mountain it’s a good idea to take microspikes as it can be slippery, especially on the descent. Pack a lunch from your guesthouse and take plenty of water and snacks. There are painted yellow arrows on rocks near the start of the route but these soon come to an end, so be sure to have a map and ideally, a guide. Expect the climb to take around 5 hours, and the descent around 3 hours.

Elevation profile and figures for the Tsergo Ri Day Hike on the Langtang Valley trek

Start by heading northeast from Kyanjin Gompa and continuing further up the Langtang Valley. You’ll reach a couple of painted signs, one pointing straight ahead for Langshisha Kharka, the other pointing uphill for Tsergo Ri (spelt Chergori on the sign). Follow the Tsergo Ri trail as it curves around the base of the hill and down to a stream, which you can cross on a wooden plank (this can be slippery with ice in the morning, so take care).

From the stream, the trail climbs a series of switchbacks and curves around the back of the hill, up onto a ridge. Here you’ll find a number of open-topped stone shelters. These are seasonal yak farmer camps, used in the summer months when yaks graze the lush green hillside below and the farmers milk them to produce cheese.

The trail becomes steep after this point, zig-zagging up the ridge and gaining about 300 metres in elevation before reaching a grassy clearing, also favoured by yaks. Shortly after you’ll reach a stone seating area across from a few more shelters, mostly in ruin these days.

From here the trail becomes more rocky, with some sections crossing areas of large stones and boulders. There is one last steep climb before the final stretch to the top, which itself is a bit more gradual.

In good weather you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with 360° mountain views, and the earlier you reach the top, the more chance you’ll have clear skies. Soak up the available views and enjoy your packed lunch before beginning the descent, returning the same way to Kyanjin Gompa.

Today you’ll retrace your steps all the way back down the valley to Lama Hotel. The only difference in the route is that instead of crossing the suspension bridge and passing by the hydroelectric station, you should stick to the left side of the stupas when leaving Kyanjin Gompa. To do so, take the left fork at the painted yellow Kyanjin Gompa sign (although you only see the back of the sign from this direction), instead of the right fork which leads slightly uphill.

The table below details the main settlements and services available along the route from Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel. For details of every individual place along the route, check the daily descriptions above. The distances and times noted cover the sections between the stops, not the total from the start.

DAY 8: LAMA HOTEL → SYABRUBESI

Langtang route day 8:, lama hotel → syabrubesi, 10.6 km | + 524 m / – 1558 m | 4.5 hours, + 524 m / – 1558 m.

Today you’ll retrace your steps as far as Rimche, before descending to the Langtang Khola, crossing a suspension bridge, and continuing through beautiful forest to the teahouses at Bamboo and Pairo. Watch out for langur monkeys along the way. There is a hot spring at Pairo, so pack your swimmers if you fancy a soak. Shortly after Pairo you’ll pass the turn-off for the Gosainkunda trek, a fantastic extension to the Langtang Valley Trek if you have another week or so. Otherwise, it’s a straightforward descent back to Syabrubesi.

Elevation profile and figures for the Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi section of the Langtang Valley trek

The table below details the tea shops, villages, and services available along the route from Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi. The distances and times noted cover the sections between the stops, not the total from the start.

Note that we  have not  personally trekked the section between the turn-off for Gosainkunda and Syabrubesi, so we can’t be sure of the services available at guesthouses on this section.

Lama Hotel → Pairo

5.9 km | + 282 m / – 1048 m | 3 hours, + 282 m / – 1048 m.

Retrace your route from Lama Hotel to Rimche, a 30 minute walk through the forest with some steps up and down.

From Rimche, you’ll descend to the suspension bridge over the Langtang Khola, about 365 metres below. The trail is a mixture of stone steps and dirt path, passing through beautiful forest with a chance to see langur monkeys. At the Rimche landslide area, you’ll pass right next to the mighty and impressive river, with enormous jumbled rocks lodged in the flow.

There is a tea shop before the suspension bridge which also sells a large amount of knitwear, blankets, etc. After crossing the bridge the trail continues through beautiful forest to Bamboo and is mostly downhill or flat. There are a few guesthouses here and it’s a popular lunch stop on the way up the valley. Pairo is another hour down the trail, again descending through lush forest. There are two teahouses here, both with outdoor seating overlooking the river (as well as indoor dining rooms).

Pairo → Syabrubesi

4.7 km | + 242 m / – 510 m | 1.5 hours, + 242 m / – 510 m.

The route continues alongside the river from Pairo, with an option to detour over the wooden bridge for a soak in the hot springs nearby. In less than 1 km you’ll reach the junction for the Gosainkunda trek, leading uphill to the left on a newly built concrete path. For detailed trail notes and information about this trek, check out our   Gosainkunda Trekking Guide and Gosainkunda Route Guide .

To continue to Syabrubesi, stick to the trail running parallel to the river. In a few minutes you’ll reach one or two guesthouses at Domen. Carry on along the trail, crossing a bridge to the opposite side of the river after about 30 minutes. There are a couple of guesthouses here too, at Tiwari. The trail sticks to this side of the river for another 45 minutes or so, after which you’ll reach the suspension bridge at Syabrubesi that you crossed back at the start, on Day 1.

Langtang Valley Trek – One Of The World’s Most Beautiful Valleys

Asia , Nepal

Langtang-Valley-Trek-routes

The Langtang Valley Trek is a relatively easy trek  and is often far less busy than other  popular treks in Nepal . The trek can be done in seven days; however, it usually takes 10 to 12 days.

On this page, you will find a comprehensive and impartial guide to the Langtang Valley Trek.

Langtang Valley Trek

Route overview.

The famed British mountaineer and travel writer, Bill Tilman (1898-1977), called this “one of the world’s most beautiful valleys.”

The local people in the Langtang Valley are mostly of Tibetan origin and, according to legend, the valley was first discovered by a lama – a teacher of Tibetan Buddhism – who was pursuing a runaway yak. “Lang” is Tibetan for “lama” while “tang” is Tibetan for “follow.”

The highlight of the Langtang Valley Trek is the sight of the Langtang Lirung range, which is simply stunning. The eponymous mountain is 23,773 feet high and dominates the valley.

Langtang-Valley-Trek-map

Langtang Regional Map

The Langtang valley region is in central Nepal, around 19 miles directly north of Kathmandu and near the border with Tibet. Although close to Kathmandu, closer than any other trek, this is as wild as it gets.

As you can see from the map above, the valley runs from east to west, sandwiched between the Himalayas to the north and the slightly lower Langtang Lirung range to the south.

Langtang Recommended Map

We believe the best map of the Lantang region is the Langtang & Helambu Map of the GHT which can be purchased online via Amazon. The map is produced based on data collected from the National Geographic Information Infrastructure Programme (NGIIP).

Langtang Trek Itinerary

It is possible to conduct this trek staying only at tea houses, but there is some time under canvas in this particular itinerary. There are several trek itineraries for this route, however, the one below is the most popular. You could also possibly arrange to meet your operator in Syabrubesi if you want to make your own way there.

Day 1-2: Arrive Kathmandu

You will arrive in Kathmandu on the first day.

You have the second day to spare while the provider arranges things. Kathmandu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , so you could use the time to explore some the incredible local sites. Or you could do some last-minute shopping around the markets.

langtang valley trek distance

Day 3: Drive to Syabrubesi

Leaving early in the morning, you embark upon a seven-hour drive to Syabrubesi at the bottom of the Langtang Valley, the valley of glaciers. The second half is unpaved and the drive becomes quite rough. You might share a bus with goats and chickens. Sometimes, during the rainy season, the road is blocked by landslides.

The route is dazzling, passing through high ridges and with a marvellous panorama of the Himalayas that includes the Annapurnas, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu and the peaks of the Langtang range. There are many waterfalls and wild bee hives. You could also potentially see yellow-throated martins, Himalayan black bears or red pandas, which are endangered. There will certainly be no shortage of monkeys.

Day 4: Trek across the Bhote Kosi

Here, the trek begins properly. The trail takes you across the Bhote Kosi, which emanates from Tibet and lies in a deep gorge. You then climb through sub-tropical forests that teem with bird life, connecting to the trail from Syabru. One of these birds is the danphe, which is a colourful bird and the national bird of Nepal.

You will follow the river, ascending through uninhabited forests of oak and rhododendron, catching sight of langur monkeys if fortune smiles upon you. Vegetation becomes sparser as you go. You will camp overnight in a forest.

langtang valley trek distance

Day 5: Trek to Langtang

This day sees more climbing, with the occasional glimpse of Langtang Lirung visible through the trees. The trail leaves the forest at Ghora Tabela, now a Nepalese army post. The trail climbs comfortably, and the valley grows wider.

In summer, you will pass the temporary settlements of herders whose livestock grazes here. There are numerous chortens and mani walls, structures featuring inscriptions. In  Tintin in Tibet , Captain Haddock was informed that you should always walk to the left of a chorten or demons will be released, but this was an invention of the author, so there is no cause for worry.

Shortly before the village of Langtang, there is a monastery for your delectation. The village is the headquarters of the Langtang National Park, which opened in 1976, the first in the Himalayas and the most unspoiled in Nepal. Houses there are of Tibetan style, with flat roofs and surrounded by stone walls.

Day 6: Trek to Kyangjin and onward

You will climb slowly through small villages and yak pastures. The valley opens, allowing for even better views. Having crossed a few small streams and moraines (patches of dirt or rock), before lunchtime, the trail arrives at the settlement of Kyangjin.

Here, there are facilities for the production of spiritual fulfilment and cheese: a small monastery and a famous government-owned factory. The factory makes Swiss cheese from yak milk and is supported by the Swiss government. Really, it should be called nak milk, as that is the female. This is just a small, three-roomed building, but it churns out prodigious quantities of cheese in summer. The snow-covered peaks in every direction make this spot very dramatic and beautiful.

langtang valley trek distance

Day 7: Acclimatisation Day

This is a rest day which you will probably use to explore. The glaciers of Langtang Lirung are sensational. You could even summit Kyangjin Ri (14,209 feet), known locally as Brana Chumbo, which is immediately behind the village and provides a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Langtang peaks.

Day 8: Retrace route to Langtang

You will retrace your route towards Langtang village. The trail heads is down hill through forest following the river. You pass through ethnic Tamang settlements who strictly follow religious and cultural  practices similar to that of the Tibetans.

Day 9: Return to  Syabrubesi

You will continue the return journey, finishing at Syabrubesi. This is roughly a 5-hour walk and the easy trail goes mostly downhill through lush green vegetation.

Langtang Valley Trek is a pleasant short trek that brings you to the alpine region of langtang valley on the northern side of Kathmandu. It is only a short distance, yet it passes through rhododendron, bamboo woods, roaring waterfalls and spectacular snow-capped mountains.

The Langtang valley and its surrounding region have been recognized as Nepal’s first Himalayan National Park. In 1971 AD, the Government of Nepal designated the Lantang region as a protected area.

The path leads you to an elevation of 3,800m, and if you want to go higher, you won’t want to miss witnessing the dawn from the Tserko Ri, which is located at 5,033m. The historic monastery of Kyanjin Gompa, located close to Tserko, continues this legacy.

This particular trip unveils you to the Tamangs and the Sherpas Buddhist culture. This journey offers fantastic views of Dorje Lakpa (6,990m), Langtang Ri (6,370m), and Langtang Lirung (7,245m).

Best Season For Langtang Valley Trek

Because of the moderate temperature and spectacular mountain scenery, autumn and spring are the best weather for Langtang Valley Trek. Even though the city’s average temperature is just 5 °C, the nights may feel relaxed. In the spring, the average daily temperature in the town is around 15 °C. You may be able to travel in shirts and shorts in lower towns throughout these seasons, but in the evenings and at higher elevations, you will most certainly require a jacket or a fleece.

Langtang Valley Trek Difficulty

Langtang Trekking is a well-known moderate-level hike. This hike is suitable for trekkers with basic physical and mental fitness.

The main challenge is the great altitude and the possibility of obtaining AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness). Kyanjin Ri, at 4773 meters, is the highest peak of the Langtang Trek. The quantity of oxygen begins to decrease at this height. As you ascend in height, you may get altitude sickness.

To prevent altitude sickness and difficulties throughout the trek, you must be well prepared. Plan various workouts at least a month in advance. While on the walk, be cautious when rising uphill. Avoid overstressing your body by walking slowly. Keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
