What other guests say about our tours and locals

Brilliant introduction to Venice

"Valentina provided us with a top-class experience in our personalised tour of the area of Venice in which we stayed. She took the time to discover our interests and tailored the tour accordingly. It was more like a stroll around the area with a very knowledgeable friend than a guided tour. It was an afternoon really well spent and set us up nicely for the remainder of our stay. Valentina is warm and friendly. After we finished, Valentina sent us some recommendations for places to eat in Venice and Treviso (which were visiting a few days later) as well as tips for getting around both cities. A really worthwhile experience with a wonderful, friendly and informative guide."

local Valentina

Amazing experience

"I am very grateful to Marco for the excellent tour on Easter Sunday. Marco is a true professional with deep knowledge of Venice's history. He is a genuine patriot of Venice and not only presented historical facts but also conveyed the attitudes of Venetians towards various events, allowing us to deeply immerse ourselves in the spirit and mindset of the Venetians. I highly recommend Marco as the best guide for Venice, St. Mark's Square, and other attractions in English or Russian. Thank you, Marco, for the unforgettable experience!"

local Marco

Claudia was wonderful!

"The food tour of Venice with Claudia was wonderful! This was my second time in Venice and my husband's first time and I think every bite of food and sip of a beverage was a new experience for both of us! It rained pretty much the entire time, but we got to see so much and learned so much about Venice. I would highly recommend Claudia! And it wasn't all about food...she knows all the history too!!"

local CLAUDIA

Venice with Giada

"Our family of four (kids 12 and 7) had a delightful tasting tour with Giada. We learned a great deal about Venice and had a lovely time strolling through the neighborhoods and tasting great food and wine. Giada is the best."

local Giada

Beautiful Day in Venice

"It was wonderful to tour Venice and meet Claudia. She made us feel right at home from the start. We loved learning about Venice through Claudia’s personal experiences and knowledge of the tastes and traditions of this region of Italy. "

Exploring Venice with a local friend

"Genny was an amazing guide! She was fun, knowledgeable and interesting! We truly felt like we were walking around with an old friend. She customized the tour to meet our needs/interests - history, fun facts, hidden gems, food and drink. The three hours flew by and left us wanting to spend more time strolling around and talking with her. She was very responsive in booking communication. You will love your tour with Genny - go ahead and book it!"

local Genny

Top tour of S Marco Baslica & Doge Palace

"Nicoletta’s tour of Venice hi-lights wast first rate. We spent three hours exploring San Marco Balisica and Doge’s palace. Nicoletta’s knowledge of the artwork and history is top shelf. She was able to describe and explain nearly every main piece. Consider hiring a guide, you’ll get more value than you can imagine."

local Nicoletta

Awesome Dorsoduro Tour

"Valentina provided a terrific tour of the Dorsoduro neighborhood in Venice. Although right across the Grand Canal, this neighborhood is a bit off the beaten path. It contains many wonderful buildings, canals, shops, and restaurants. The Peggy Guggenheim & DaVinci museum are in this area as well. Valentina was full of information of historical nature and advice for modern times as well. She’s a great choice for your Venice tours."

Just the best day with a lovely person!!

"We have taken food tours in a number of cities, including previously in Venice, but this was undoubtedly the best. Alexandra is a really great guide with obvious passion & enthusiasm for what she does, plus she's a genuinely warm person as well with a fantastic personality. The food on the tour was really plentiful & very varied which altered my perception of some of the dishes despite several visits to Venice. Although a couple of our party were a little picky Alexandra wasn't phased & was so pleased when one tried & enjoyed a dish that even I thought he'd never look at. The food vendors were all very pleasant & the standard of the produce top-notch. Along with the food, the story-telling allied with architectural & historical detailing was very interesting & beautifully done. We've used Withlocals before & highly recommend them anyway but Alexandra is a real star. Like others have said, we also felt we left with a new friend in Venice so taking another tour & having a glass of wine with her will be top of the list on our next trip."

local Alexandra

Excellent afternoon in Venice!

"What a great way to start our time in Venice. Nicolette was a wonderful guide! She was so knowledgeable and spoke passionately about her city! My kids (ages 11 and 13) and parents (70s) were all equally engaged! We saw some highlights for sure, but she also showed us places and shared stories we would have never known about otherwise. She also gave us a great dinner recommendation! Would definitely recommend to anyone. Thanks so much Nicolette!!!"

The first time I ever arrived in Venice, I was taken aback by just how many things there were to see and do. The floating city is not only visually aesthetic, it’s also filled to the brim with history, rich culture, and delicious food.

The Private 5 hrs Grand Day Tour of Venice on Foot and by Boat with Tickets Included  is the perfect way to get to know the Floating City in one comprehensive experience that will make you fall in love.

The only thing that I felt could’ve made this tour better, was offering a hotel pickup instead of having to meet up in central Venice. However, it was still quite easy to access from our hotel and our guide was super friendly and welcoming, answering any questions we had.

I was really excited to discover that we had skip-the-line access to many of the most popular sites, including the impressive St. Mark’s Basilica, leaving us more time to explore.

Our first stop was at the Doge’s Palace, where I learned about the dark history behind this place, even getting the opportunity to walk through the famous prisons, where countless prisoners were held.

The Piazza San Marco and Basilica di San Marco (St. Mark’s) were absolutely beautiful, learning about the history of the church and the square as our guide led us around.

Speaking of churches, I also loved seeing the Santa Maria Formosa Rensaissance Church dedicated to the Holy Virgin and boasting quite the interesting background.

We cruised along the Calle del Paradiso typical Venetian alley way with breathtaking Byzantine and Gothic architecture, before arriving to the gorgeous Grand Canal to take a relaxing 1-hour ride along the waterways.

If you’re looking to see a lot of the city in a short amount of time, this is a fantastic choice!

  • Departure: Campo S. Giacomo di Rialto, 30125 Venezia VE
  • Departure Time: 9:00, 10:00 or 11:00 AM
  • Includes:  Private expert local guide, skip-the-line tickets to St Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace, private gondola ride

Venice is one of my favorite cities in the world, and one of the tours that made me fall in love with it so, is this next one. The Venice in a Day Private Tour  allows you to dive into the romance, mystery, and allure thanks to an expert local guide in a private tour setting.

Through narrow alleys to smooth waterways, there are so many stories ready to be explored from this once major financial and maritime power.

Our tour began in the Piazza San Marco, which is simply breathtaking, featuring Saint Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, and plenty of ornate arches and stunning structures that will take you back in time.

After our guide asked us about our specific interests to incorporate into the tour, we then headed to the Basilica di San Marco, skipping the lines to admire the ornate beauty of the Patriarchate of Venice without the wait.

We then headed to the Doge’s Palace with VIP entry once again, so there was no waiting and we got to see all of the private hidden apartments, along with the Hall of Great Council, Bridge of Sighs, and more.

It was very interesting, albeit a bit sad learning about the wrath and torment that occurred here. After walking around and learning all about the Doges’ span of nearly 1000 years of ruling, we then took a more lighthearted turn onto a fantastic eatery for lunch.

We then took a leisurely stroll through the charming streets to all kinds of bridges and piazzas, like the famous Rialto bridge and Marco Polo’s house! Closeby, we stopped by Campo Santa Maria Formosa for a private gondola ride, which is so exquisitely “Venice” in all its glory!

It may be cliche, sure, but it was one of my favorite parts of the tour, which is saying a lot because I loved it all!

3. Highlights & Hidden Gems With Locals: Best of Venice Private Tour

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure Time: Between 9:00 AM & 12:00 PM
  • Includes: Custom private tour, local guide, see the city’s top attractions and secret gems, 1 local drink and tasting

Venice is a city of romance, mystery, and intricate history, but there’s so much more than what originally meets the eye. If you’d really like to capture its authentic essence in just one day, this is one of the best tours to take.

The Highlights & Hidden Gems with Locals: Best of Venice Private Tour does a great job summing it up, offering a more behind-the-scenes look at the floating city.

We met our guide in central Venice, who was a local and very passionate about his city, which made the tour that much more intriguing. As it is a completely private tour, he even asked for our input and what we were specifically interested in, to tailor it to our liking.

With exclusive access and skip-the-line tickets to major attractions, we also got to see so much more than we would have had we purchased the tickets separately.

While being able to see the most popular sites like this was certainly fun, it was equally as interesting being able to see the more off-the-beaten-path discoveries like little campos, tranquil canals, and plenty of breathtaking architecture I’d never even heard of before.

Our guide really tailored the tour to our needs, taking us to many little treasures along the way – like the Banksy painting on one of the canal walls!

Again, this is an experience that likely wouldn’t be possible unless you’re going with a local guide who really knows the city like the back of their hand.

It’s perfect for taking near the beginning of your Venice stay, so you can explore all the various little shops and fantastic eateries throughout the rest of your time there.

This is definitely one of those experiences that will show you the “backstory” of the city many don’t know about.

4. Private Tour: Venice Half-Day Walking Tour

  • Departure: Calle Minelli, 4267/A, 30124 Venezia VE
  • Departure Time: Between 10:00 AM & 5:00 PM
  • Includes:  Private Walking Tour (3 hours), Professional guide, Private tour and commentary, Appetizer and one glass of wine at a Venetian bacaro

I couldn’t believe how affordable this next tour was, especially considering that it’s 100% completely customizable!

This is one of the most affordable private tours I’ve seen in Venice, where a professional guide will lead you and your party alone throughout the places you’re most interested in!

If that sounds like fun to you, do yourself a favor and check out the Private Tour: Venice Half-Day Walking Tour !

Something else that made this tour so convenient to me was the fact that they have a whopping 5 different start times, ranging from early in the morning to later at night.

Whether you’re interested in architecture, food, Renaissance art, etc., do not doubt that these guides can whip up a fascinating tour that will show you the best of the best. I told them I was most interested in both Renaissance architecture and art, and wow, they did not disappoint!

Along the way, we stopped at a couple of locales to try traditional Venetian appetizers and a couple of glasses of local wines, too. The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari was one of the most impressive sites I’ve ever seen, and while many tourists miss it, I’d advise you not to.

Inside is just as impressive, with art like Giovanni Bellini’s ‘Madonna and Child with Saints, ‘Saint John the Baptist’ by Donatello, and ‘Assumption’ by Titian.

What was really cool is that our guide was so thorough that he even set up reservations for us to see additional experiences and try busy restaurants, with impeccable timing!

I learned so much about Venetian foods, customs, wines, and of course, the history relating back to local architecture and art. I truly can’t recommend this tour enough, no matter the age or background!

5. Private 4 hrs Venice Tour: St Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace and Secret Venice

  • Duration:  4 hours
  • Includes:  Professional English-speaking local guide, guarantee to skip long lines to Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica, headset to hear guide with 9+ participants in the group

This is another private tour throughout the floating city that’ll take you through its winding canals and alleyways, uncovering little hidden gems and famous landmarks.

If you have a larger party or you’re traveling with the entire family, this is the tour I’d recommend most as it’s ideal for bigger groups.

The Private 4 hrs Venice Tour: St Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace and Secret Venice  has a fantastic guide to tailor the experience to your preferences to ensure a personal tour, too.

Like most tours on this guide, it starts off with you meeting your guide in the center of Venice – in this case, right outside the Royal Gardens. Our guide asked us about what we’re most interested in and designed the next 4 hours around it.

Our first stop of the day was a quick stroll over to Doge’s Palace located in St. Mark’s Square, where we were able to skip the massive queues and head straight inside!

We followed our guide throughout the different opulent rooms, decorated with gilded decor, murals, paintings, etc. from floor to ceiling!

After learning all about the Doges, we headed closeby to St. Mark’s Basilica, where we also skipped the line and headed right inside to explore the towering golden domes and marble for half an hour.

We then went to the backstreets to check out fascinating hidden gems like the imposing San Zaccaria Church, Campo Santa Maria Formosa, and “hidden Venice”.

I loved the stories our guide shared with us as we explored, further enriching what we were seeing in a way that was engaging and natural – not like audiobook tours that just repeat information you can find anywhere.

Oh, and if you’re traveling with easily distracted teens, this tour will keep them entertained with intense stories and fun guides! While the price is a bit higher than the others, it’s more than worth it!

6. Private One Day Tour in Venice!

  • Duration:  8 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM
  • Includes:  Private Guide for the day, Lunch, Transfer to Murano island by private water taxi, private guided visit of an old glass factory with glassblowing demonstration, private, water taxi for the Grand Canal Boat Tour

This next tour is the most comprehensive of the bunch, and is perfect if you are only going to be in Venice for a short amount of time!

If you’re going to be in the city for only a day or two, this tour does a great job of offering insight into Venice’s history while showing you a huge amount of top sites. The  Private One Day Tour in Venice  starts out at 10:00 am, and you’ll be back just after dinnertime!

Instead of having to head to a meetup point and figure out how to get there, rest easy waiting in your hotel lobby for your guide to come pick you and your crew up! Our first task of the day was to explore the Cannaregio district.

It is surprisingly lacking the masses of tourists, but is brimming with history – most notably, the Jewish Ghetto filled with old synagogues, art galleries, and museums.

Next up, we visited the San Polo district, which is known as the old trade center of the city, and is where we were able to see and explore the treasures that are offered at Rialto market! I really had a fun time in Santa Croce, which is filled with all kinds of art and talented artisans!

We then crossed the Ponte di Rialto, appreciating the beautiful views and learning about its history before arriving at the Mercati di Rialto for a traditional lunch.

After fueling up on cicchetti and local wines, we made our way to the legendary San Marco square where we saw the basilica, Doge’s Palace, and Bridge of Sighs.

The only thing that was a slight “con” for me was that we had to pay extra to enter the Doge’s Palace, but it was still quite affordable and worth it.

After that, we got to see one of the oldest glass factories on Murano Island, finishing with a private water taxi ride on the gorgeous Grand Canal while sipping on a glass of Prosecco.

7. Private Guided Tour: Venice Gondola Ride Including the Grand Canal

  • Duration:  1 hour
  • Departure: Campiello Traghetto, 30124 Venezia VE
  • Departure Time: 2:00 PM
  • Includes:  Private guide in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian, Private 1-hour gondola ride

If you’re looking for a tour that will easily fit into even the busiest of itineraries, this one is right up your alley!

It’s a fantastic way to see Venice from quite possibly the most “iconic” perspective: a gondola! The Private Guided Tour: Venice Gondola Ride Including the Grand Canal  comes with tons of different start times throughout the day and evening, so you can surely find a time that works perfectly for you.

I feel that everyone should have the experience of riding a gondola when in Venice, down the famous Grand Canal lined with opulent palaces, impressive basilicas, and old homes that simply can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

With 5 passengers maximum per boat, this is definitely an intimate experience ideal for friends, families, couples, and even solo travelers. Meet the guide in central Venice to take off close to St. Mark’s Square, which is very easy to access from just about any hotel in the city.

The gondoliers are quite charming, themselves, though it was our guide who really made the experience so memorable and educational.

He spoke various languages but was a local, born and raised, so he knew just about everything one could know about Venice’s past and present! Taking in the gorgeous canal-side sights was something else, offering incredible opportunities for photos and videos.

As we cruised down the famous Grand Canal, he quizzed us on fun facts and trivia, while also regaling us with interesting anecdotes from his own experiences of living there.

It was so cool being on the water as we passed by all kinds of water taxis, barges, and plenty of other gondolas!

Going under the gorgeous Accademia Bridge was quite the experience, and I really enjoyed getting to go through the narrower little canals that I felt exhibited perhaps the most charming homes and wonders.

However, there’s no underestimating the grandeur of the Ca’ d’Oro palace and the Rialto Bridge, passing through centuries of history.

This is so much more than just a gondola ride – it was a great balance between a relaxing ride and an educational experience. It’s perfect for every age, too!

Venice Tour Guide - Roberto V.

Hello everyone! My name is Roberto and I am ready to be your host and go with you to discover the very true side of Venice. I was born, raised up and living in Venice since 1957.... I have been knowing and loving Venice for more than half a century now. After being a concierge in the most famous hotels in Venice, I went for a change and took my licenses for both tour leader and environmental guide. I will certainly be able to show you how we live in Venice now and how we used to live in Venice some years ago...well, yes, I am old enough to do it! I am a true Venetian and I have a sort of warranty certificate for this... I mean for being a true Venetian. Because the family was a well known noble family in Venice that also gave Venice a doge...and who was the doge? Ehiiiiiii I cannot tell you everything now! Book a tour with me and you’ll discover!

I'm a tour leader in venice, where i moved to 18 years ago to study at the cà foscari university, and my specialization is in japanese language and culture. i am deeply fascinated and fell in love with japan and its traditions, and i consider it my second homeland. somehow, venice's nostalgic soul reminds me of the magic, beautiful fluctuating landscapes of the land of the rising sun. venice is like a bubble, a stand-alone reality, a separate world where you feel like living in a different era. in venice, everything gets slower. you can catch people's eyes, and you can always feel at home.i deliver wine and food tours, sightseeing walikng tours for families with children, and tours of the islands of the lagoon. i love the outdoors, walking, and sharing my experience with my guests. i'm looking forward to show you my venice                                                                                                                                  .

Venice Tour Guide - Giulia L.

My name is Julia and I am a licensed guide's assistant (accompagnatore turistico). Not being a native venetian, I moved to this city six years ago for the deepest admiration of its glorious story, unique architecture style and the breathtaking beauty. Living and working in Venice was my dream and I'm happy that I've managed to make it come true. Since '17 I'd worked as a travel & marketing interpreter and I got a guide's assistant license in 2023. Having two master's degrees, in Intercultural Communication and in Linguistics, I nevertheless continue to be engaged in my education. I try to meet the needs of guests, most of whom come for a short stay and often get perplexed which activity to choose, the choice is really huge. So I offer city tours & excursions either walking or in a boat, which I call “All inclusive”, in the meaning that my guests will see the maximum of the city in half-day or in a full-day term. This may be a good choice for those who come to Venice for the 1st time. My another passion is enogastronomy, I'm a real foody and I keep constantly updated about the best places in the city. I hope to share my experience with you and to welcome you in Venice!

A LOCAL’S GUIDE TO VENICE, ITALY

This post may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. We may receive a small commission when you make a purchase using our link.

It’s fair to say that the rustic colours and elegant canals that make up the city of Venice, Italy, are not so much a hidden gem as the crowning jewel of Southern Europe.

Around the world, visitors flock to its narrow alleyways, so laden with tradition and history, in the hope of experiencing some of the city’s iconic magic for themselves.

You’ll all be familiar with the wide, bustling Canal Grande, the decadent Piazza di San Marco, and the wonderfully chaotic Mercato di Rialto; Instagram certainly has no shortage of pictures taken in these coveted spots.

But beyond the crowds and the glamour which sit atop the surface of this floating city lies a deep-rooted culture known only to Venice’s long-standing residents.

Cast aside your guidebooks and uncover the city of Venice from a local’s perspective with this guide!

Ghetto Ebraico

A largely quiet, residential area, the Ghetto Ebraico (or Jewish Quarter) of Venice is possibly the best place in the city from which to get a taste of local life.

A small part of the larger neighbourhood of Cannaregio, the Ghetto Ebraico was historically home to the city’s Jewish population under the Venetian Republic.

Now, the Ghetto Ebraico is a vision in peaceful, shaded alleyways and slowly-strolling locals, with small cafés and bars dotted along the narrow canals.

To discover more about the history of Venice’s Jewish population, pay a visit to the Museo Ebraico.

Libreria Acqua Alta

Admittedly, this unique, peculiar bookstore can no longer be considered a local’s secret.

We’re sure you’ve seen the Instagram pictures of this one-of-a-kind independent bookshop, which is nestled into a quiet, unsuspecting street in the warren of Venice’s city centre.

Made famous by its quirky decoration and haphazard charm, the Libreria Acqua Alta is an unmissable stop for all bookworms, with books displayed in piles, on chairs, balancing precariously on old shelves, and – amusingly – heaped into bathtubs and gondolas.

While this may appear simply a whimsical way to attract curious passers-by, there’s logic behind their displays: they protect the books from Venice’s notoriously destructive flooding.

Make sure not to miss the bookstore’s terrace, which features a staircase made entirely from books, allowing you a unique view along one of the numerous canals which weave through the city.

Oh, and they also have a number of resident cats napping in unexpected places throughout the store.

Giudecca Island

When it comes to visiting nearby islands, most visitors look no further than Murano and Burano.

Whilst these two neighbourhoods are undeniably charming, with their vibrant architecture and unusual geography, Venice is actually formed of over 120 different islands, spattered across its picturesque lagoon.

One of these islands is nearby Giudecca, which is little-known to visitors due to its largely residential and peaceful nature. Home to a number of small boutique hotels and hostels – such as the trendy Generator Venice , whose rooms offer an uninterrupted view across the canal and onto St Mark’s Square – this island is also the location of a handful of striking buildings and monuments.

Spend an afternoon wandering around this island, which is easily accessible by Vaporetto – and if you choose to find accommodation here, too, then you are guaranteed a quieter, more local experience.

Bacareto Da Lele

If you ask a local their favourite thing about Venice, they are unlikely to name the imposing Basilica di San Marco or the often-crowded Rialto Bridge.

Instead, true Venetians take solace in the long-standing tradition of the ‘Bacaro Tour’: essentially, a bar crawl around a number of the city’s more understated, traditional bars.

Most famous of these – and frequently used as a starting point – is the compact Bacareto Da Lele , located in the shaded Fondamenta dei Tolentini.

You may be initially surprised to find that this bar is so small, in fact, that it offers no seating. Instead, make like a local, and take your wine in a plastic cup, to be enjoyed along the banks of the nearby canal.

Ristorante Due Colonne

Prosecco on tap. Pasta served in pizza-dough bowls. Charming Italian waiters. If all these things contribute to your idea of the perfect evening meal, then make sure to stop off at Ristorante Due Colonne , settled at the heart of Venice’s labyrinthine city centre.

As well as a range of more unusual dishes, this restaurant offers the finest of northern Italian cuisine, with a menu that includes fresh seafood pasta, summertime salads, and traditional pizzas.

Whilst the food here is, undeniably, the main attraction, the restaurant’s warm, tirelessly welcoming staff will ensure you always leave a little piece of your heart – and your appetite – here.

Palazzo Grassi Contemporary Art Museum

Unsurprisingly for a city so enchanting, so steeped in otherworldly magic, Venice is widely celebrated for its art.

Although often overshadowed by the city’s numerous other museums and art galleries, such as the infamous Guggenheim Museum , the Palazzo Grassi is Venice’s beloved contemporary art centre, offering a range of exhibitions that showcase some of the globe’s most talented modern artists.

The building itself is classical, elegant, and typically Venetian, overhanging the bustling Canal Grande, and was initially known during the 1950s as the International Centre for Arts and Costume.

Among its exhibits, the Palazzo Grassi has been known to house the works of trailblazing artists such as Damien Hirst and Bruce Nauman.

Far from the heaving crowds and extravagant spectacle of Venice’s city centre lies the Dorsoduro: an unpretentious neighbourhood towards the South of the main island.

Home to most of the city’s student population, the Dorsoduro is adored for its authenticity and its vibrancy, coming alive most notedly after dark.

Lose yourself in the tangle of its streets, ducking in and out of compact bars and eateries, to truly get a feel for local, everyday life.

This is also one of the best areas in the city to try typical Cicchetti: the Venetian equivalent of tapas. Each of these bite-sized appetizers are to be enjoyed with an Aperol Spritz or, more traditionally, a glass of local wine.

It’s also home to one of Venice’s only remaining gondola workshops.

Venice Tours FAQs

You don’t need a tour to explore Venice and enjoy all it has to offer. However, a guided tour of Venice will provide you with insightful commentary and incredible facts about the city’s history and culture, allowing you to see Venice in a new light. I especially recommend joining a tour if it’s your first time in the city.

In my opinion, the best Venice excursions are the ones below, as they’re the most comprehensive options and include a visit to major landmarks.   • St Marks, Doges Palace, with Murano and Burano & Gondola Ride • Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola ride • Welcome to Venice: Walking Tour, St. Mark’s Basilica & Gondola Ride

2 days are enough to get a glimpse of Venice and its main attractions. I would recommend staying an extra day to ensure you see it all or add a fun day trip or experience to your visit. If you have limited time, make sure to spend at least 2 full days.

You can certainly see the major landmarks of Venice in one day, however, it’s going to be a rushed day and you might miss some attractions if you don’t plan your itinerary carefully. If you can’t afford more than a day in the city, I’d recommend joining a Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola Ride Tour to see it all hassle-free.

Yes, Venice offers hop-on hop-off boat tours to explore the city at your pace.

2 Amazing Venice Walking Tours You Should Not Miss

J oin me as we tour Venice, one of the great cities of Europe, on foot. Venice walking tours are a fantastic way to explore the city of a thousand canals. Obviously, before we visit, we research by reading, doing internet searches, and talking to others to prepare for our destination. These activities are all worth the effort.

However, there is something to be said for joining a knowledgeable local guide who can bring a place to life. People who have lived in the area, people who have family and friends in the neighborhoods, and people who are part of the soul and energy of a place. Here we present two fabulous Venice walking tours from The Tour Guy that bring the city of Venice to life.

Venice Walking Tour with Gondola Ride

The fantastic six-hour Venice in a Day Combo Tour with Gondola Ride highlights some of the top attractions of Venice and is one of the most popular Venice Walking Tours. This tour took us to St. Mark’s Square, St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge, a gondola ride, and through some less visited neighborhoods in Venice. Chiara, our excellent guide, added a mix of interesting history and commentary about Venice, giving us a great flavor of the historic city.

We started our tour at the entrance to Venice from the lagoon, between two towering landmarks. Looking out towards the lagoon from St. Mark’s Square, we have St. Todaro on the left and the winged lion of St. Mark on the right. These marble and granite pillars have marked the main entrance into this great city for centuries.  It is also the spot where public executions were held, so many people avoid walking between the two pillars because of superstition.

The last thing those being executed saw was the Moorish clock tower. With their back to the lagoon, the condemned prisoner had a clear view of the clock. Thus, the popular expression, “Te fasso véder mi, che ora che xe” – I’ll show you what time it is.

St. Mark’s Basilica

The magnificent St. Mark’s Basilica is a prime example of the magnificent Venetian artisanship through the centuries. The current church (the third built on this site) was started around 1063 but has been restored and revised many times over the years. Ceilings, walls, and floors are covered with intricate mosaic tiles, many featuring the glitter of gold. Numerous artworks depicting saints, prophets, and biblical scenes are scattered throughout the basilica.

Legend has it that the body of St. Mark, the basilica’s namesake, was stolen from Alexandria, Egypt, and brought to the basilica. The commonly told story is that the Venetians smuggled his body out by hiding it under layers of pork in barrels to get it past the Muslim guards. In addition, many of the treasures in St. Mark’s came from places like Constantinople (Istanbul).

After the victory by the Venetians in the Fourth Crusade that ended in 1204, a lot of valuable items were shipped to Venice from the conquered territory. Among those treasures are the four bronze horses above the main entrance, parts of the Golden altar, relics, crosses, and other artifacts.

Doge’s Palace

The opulent Doge’s Palace is connected to the San Marco Basilica facing the lagoon.  This gothic masterpiece was the residence and the seat of the Venetian government for centuries. The walls hold a treasure trove of historical and artistic importance. From the beginning of the tour up the Golden Staircase to the end in the Great Council, the architecture, artwork, and décor are spectacular. The narration from The Tour Guy guide added depth and understanding to our wonderful tour.

Parts of the Doge’s Palace complex was a prison in the past. Some of the prison cells were down in the dank, dark, wet bottom floor and must have made for a miserable experience for prisoners awaiting their fate. It is fascinating to walk above the canal while crossing the infamous Bridge of Sighs, which connects sections of the prison spaces. Prisoners going to their execution made this last long walk, where they could stare out of the windows to gather one last view of the Venetian lagoon before their demise.

The artwork within the Doge Palace is endless and priceless. Paintings, murals, statues, and more from artists like Tintoretto, Titian, Paolo Veronese, Carpaccio, Giovanni Bellini, Gianbattista, and others cover each room. Several fires destroyed some of the masterpieces in the palace over the years but now feature more brilliant artwork.

The Great Council Chamber was where the Senate met to make decisions about financial and other important local matters. The ceiling is covered with gold and beautiful paintings in one of the largest and most opulent rooms in Europe. On one side of the room, almost an entire wall features Tintoretto’s Paradise. One of the world’s largest oil paintings on canvas, this masterpiece is truly breathtaking, with some 500 characters represented on this canvas.

Another intriguing space in the Doge’s Palace is the Armory. These four rooms display a vast collection of about 2,000 weapons used throughout the centuries. Medieval suits of armor, swords, bows, arrows, and other weapons of war provide an insightful look at what war has looked like over the years. They even have a miniature suit of armor, most likely made for a child or dwarf, found on the battlefield in Marignano in 1515.

The Scaramouche Mask of the Black Plague

As we walked through some older neighborhoods, our guide showed us pictures of the famous Scaramouche Mask, a traditional Venetian Mask with very large, pronounced noses. During the time of the Black Plague, some doctors believed these masks, which contained protective herbs in the nose, could help filter the poisons and putrid smells in the air. The masks are still popular at masquerade parties and at the festive Carnivale celebrations.

Gondola Ride

I did not go on a gondola ride during my first several visits to Venice. Because we had limited time and so many other priorities, we just never made time for that iconic gondola ride through the canals. We did take the convenient Vaporetto on many trips as well as a private water taxi. However, on this trip, my fourth, we made it a point to experience the gondola.

I must say, my wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed our time floating down the canals. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Only in Venice can you glide along the canals of an ancient city, traveling under the Rialto Bridge on the Grand Canal, with centuries of intriguing history and beauty all around. This was a fantastic way to end our Venice walking tour. Venice Local Evening Food Tour in Cannaregio

The Venice Local Evening Food Tour in Cannaregio with The Tour Guy was a wonderful evening.  Nothing tells the story of a place like the everyday food and drink locals enjoy. While I had dined in Venice on numerous occasions, I have never truly felt such a genuine connection to the city as I did on this food tour with The Tour Guy. Our local guide, Juliano, knew all the nooks and crannies and all the best bars and restaurants. And, of course, he always had stories and jokes to make our experience even more enjoyable.

Meeting at the Teatro Italia (a former cinema now turned into a supermarket), our small group of eight people became fast friends. During our three-hour tour, we visited 2 bars, had a sit-down dinner, and made a final stop for dessert. At each bar, we had a drink along with a variety of Cicchetti (small bites) to accompany our beverages.

Aperitivos & Cicchetti

Our first stop was at Cantina Aziende Agricole, where we enjoyed the Pilla Aperitivo (similar to an Aperol Spritz, but slightly more bitter) and a selection of four Cicchetti . Various cheeses, ham, herbs, and spices made for some very tasty small bites, a perfect start to our evening. They were all flavorful – my favorite was the eggplant and ham.

After a short walk to the second bar, we were greeted by more Cicchetti accompanied by a crisp glass of white wine. Many people in our group loved the cod appetizer, while my favorite was the delicious fried polpette (meatball). The gorgonzola and ham were also very tasty. The Cicchetti, apertivo , wine, and conversation made the first hour of our tour so much fun. We could have easily made a meal and a night of it just at the bars, but we had more to see and do that evening.

Sit-Down Dinner in Venice

For our sit-down dinner, our group was treated to a variety of traditional Venetian dishes. I had a wonderful lasagna, while others in our group tried the Spaghetti Bolognese or the popular Spaghetti with Black Squid Ink.

Paired with our choice of red or white wine, we enjoyed spending time with our new friends as we filled our bellies. It was so nice to sit and relax after our active evening with the hustle and bustle of the bars and crowds we experienced earlier. We were able to truly relax and spend some quality time with our fun guide and fellow diners.

Best Gelato in Venice?

After our sit-down dinner, we walked through some of the less visited neighborhoods of Venice and followed Juliano to our final stop for the evening. Of course, we had to finish our night with gelato! I was all set with a scoop of stracciatella and a scoop of pistachio from Maison de la Crepe. Our group gathered on a small bridge overlooking one of the many canals as we enjoyed our gelato and one last joke from Juliano. What a fun evening we had!

Venice is a one-of-a-kind destination. With so much to see and do, I highly recommend taking a Venice walking tour with some locals to get oriented and to get a true feel for the area. Our two Venice walking tours with The Tour Guy greatly added to our experience in Venice. We saw and learned so much more than we would have on our own. We were so glad we got to experience some local neighborhoods, food, drink, and some of the intriguing stories in the wonderful city of Venice.

Thanks to The Tour Guy for hosting us on the wonderful Venice walking tour and the evening food tour. All opinions are my own.
