best us beaches

Asbury Park, New Jersey

best US beaches

Often regarded as the Hamptons of New Jersey, Asbury Park is a cultural hub of the Jersey shore, with lively boardwalks, gorgeous beaches, and a bustling music scene. Spend the night at Asbury Ocean Club Hotel , or catch a show at The Stone Pony , where New Jersey natives like Bruce Springsteen got their start.

We recommend cracking into some fresh lobster or indulging in fried classics at Bluecoast Seafood Grill.

Ocracoke Beach, North Carolina

Enjoy live music and locally sourced fare at Ocracoke's beloved Dajio Restaurant .

Every item on this page was chosen by a Veranda editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

With that in mind, we'd like to introduce you to the 12 best weekend beach getaways across the United States. Whether you live on the East, West, or South coast—or are willing to fly to one of them—these beaches have everything you could ever want for a rejuvenating weekend away. From vast sandy beaches and coastlines that stretch beyond the line of sight to state-of-the-art golf courses, five-star spas, all-inclusive resorts , and plenty of activities to keep kids entertained for hours on end, the beaches in the slides ahead will leave you wishing to return time and time again.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

virginia beach best weekend beach getaways

Virginia Beach is nestled along the southeastern shores of Virginia. As if the three-mile-long oceanfront boardwalk (which has a designated bike path) isn't enough to draw you in, perhaps the 35 miles of ocean and bay beaches (a Guinness world record!) will do the trick. Of course, Virginia Beach has much more to offer than its sandy shores. The beach is also home to a plethora of highly rated restaurants and bars, including Doc Taylor's and Waterman's Surfside Grille .

Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland and Virginia

assateague island national seashore best weekend beach getaways

If you're looking for a more low-key beach experience—sans crowded beaches and expansive boardwalks—then check out Assateague Island National Seashore, which spans 37 miles. While Chincoteague, the beach town adjacent to the nature reserve shore, has notably fewer restaurants and entertainment venues, it does tout quaint shops, tasty eateries, and, best of all, wild horses galloping down the beach that are an absolute sight to behold.

BOOK YOUR STAY IN ASSATEAGUE

Ocracoke Island, Outer Banks of North Carolina

Many people have heard of the Outer Banks—either because of Nicholas Sparks books and movies, the popular Netflix show, or various accolades surrounding the 200-mile string of barrier islands. Most often, though, fanfare surrounds the towns of Duck, Kitty Hawk, and Nags Head. However, if you head to the southern tip of the Outer Banks—and if you're willing to take a ferry—then you'll find Ocracoke Island. Dotted with delicious restaurants (make sure to pop into the iconic Howard's Pub ), coffee shops, and outdoor adventure huts, there's something for the whole family to enjoy.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Hilton Head Island is a great place to head to the beach, but it's a seaside town known beyond its sandy shores. It has seemingly endless bicycle trails , a variety of world-class golf courses , a zip-line adventure park , waterfront dining, a beautiful five-star spa , and so much more.

BOOK YOUR STAY IN HILTON HEAD

Sanibel Island, Florida

If you love nature, seashells, warm water, and just about the most breathtaking beach experience in the U.S., then you have to visit Sanibel Island. Visitors to the wildlife refuge along the Gulf of Mexico can see a variety of beach creatures up close and personal, including sea turtles, manatees, and rare birds. That said, you can also accidentally come across gators, so be mindful when you head out to the beach.

BOOK YOUR STAY IN SANIBEL

Bethany Beach, Delaware

Bethany Beach boasts a 12-foot-wide, 0.38-mile-long boardwalk stretching down Delaware's coast. Unlike the much louder, not-listed neighboring beach of Ocean City, Bethany Beach is known for being a family-friendly beach destination. The beach is surrounded by state parks, a nature center, an ecological preserve, and other fantastic destinations for expanding your knowledge of the natural world. Of course, there are plenty of delicious restaurants and fun attractions, like Captain Jack's Pirate Golf, too.

BOOK YOUR STAY IN BETHANY BEACH

The Hamptons, Long Island, New York

Popularized by classic novels ( The Great Gatsby ) and chick flicks ( Something Borrowed and White Chicks ) alike, The Hamptons is a ritzy beach destination on Long Island offering everything from beautiful white-sand beaches and luxury shopping to gorgeous wineries and world-class restaurants . Of course, if you find yourself wanting to explore beyond the beaches, then you can't beat the architecture of the Gold Coast mansions, which are all within a short drive.

BOOK YOUR STAY IN THE HAMPTONS

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Looking for an unbeatable lobster roll and an overall laid-back beach experience? Cape Cod is waiting for you. Welcoming millions of visitors each year, the Massachusetts peninsula is beloved for its Shaker houses, abundance of ice-cream shops, breweries, wineries, and restaurants galore. Although it seems quite quaint, the cape spans more than 500 miles, so there's plenty to explore on a weekend getaway.

BOOK YOUR STAY ON THE CAPE

Galveston Island, Texas

Although most people think of the East and West coasts when pondering beaches in the U.S., the South has a handful of beaches to offer too. Namely, Galveston Island on Texas's Gulf Coast. The island is home to Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier , which features rides, restaurants, shops, and more. As such, it's a destination fit for the whole family.

BOOK YOUR STAY IN GALVESTON

Olympic National Park, Washington

California isn't the only West Coast state boasting beautiful beaches. In Washington, you'll find Olympic National Park, which is situated on the state's Olympic Peninsula. In addition to the Pacific coastline, complete with sandy beaches, park visitors can enjoy hiking, climbing, and out-of-this-world stargazing. If you wish, you can even camp on the beach.

BOOK YOUR STAY IN OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK

Cannon Beach, Oregon

The beaches in the Pacific Northwest have long, wide shorelines, but the water is perpetually cold. Still, the beautiful setting is a fantastic place to visit for all kinds of outdoor adventures, including sightseeing, hiking, up-close encounters with wildlife, and more. As for the tall sea stack, known as Haystack Rock, standing in the waves off Oregon's Cannon Beach? It's a sanctuary for adorable orange-beaked tufted puffins, making Cannon Beach a fantastic place for birdwatchers too.

BOOK YOUR STAY IN CANNON BEACH

Monterey, California

Whether you're a big fan of HBO's Big Little Lies or you're well-versed in California beach towns, there's a good chance Monterey, California, is on your list. If it's not, then it ought to be. In addition to plenty of sandy coastline to lay out on the beach, the town has a host of seafood restaurants, small-town eateries, gift shops, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It's a relaxing place to plan a weekend stay.

From Los Angeles

Two stand up paddle boarders on misty morning Taken off the mountainous coast of Catalina Island California

Catalina Island

Catalina Island, California

Take the one-hour journey to this island 22 miles or so off the coast via the Catalina Express ferry , which departs from San Pedro, Long Beach, or Dana Point daily; once you’re here, biking and walking are the main transport modes (or you can rent a golf cart for longer drives). Catalina Island is a startling contrast to the mainland, with more than a whiff of East Coast hideouts like Nantucket: Start at the quaint main town, Avalon, and gorge on seafood that’s barely minutes from the water—try Bluewater Grill , right on the dock.

Then head inland to El Rancho Escondido , which earned acclaim for its Arabian horse-breeding program. The ponies are gone now, though, and much of the land has been deeded over to vines, where Rusack Vineyards focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. Outdoorsy types can hike the entire length of the 38.5-mile Trans Catalina Trail in about four days, too, with campgrounds for overnighting along the route. The Bellanca Hotel in Avalon is the plushest perch if you’d rather have someone else make your bed—or sleep in a bed, period.

Best Weekend Getaways Palm Springs CA

Palm Springs

Palm Springs, California

Around 50 percent of the locals in this Coachella Valley hub identify as LGBTQ+, adding appeal for any open-minded, easy-going visitor. The main drag of gay bars, along Arenas Road, is a rollicking night out for anyone—and just 90 mins from Los Angeles , as long as you avoid the peak times for the drive, like Friday evenings. Come here, too, to explore the design style which was popular when Palm Springs was in its heyday: Midcentury modernism is celebrated everywhere, from antique stores specializing in sleek Danish sofas to the soon-to-open Modernism Museum, which will include installations like a 1950s-era RV, plus a gift shop (of course). Dive deeper into the history of this style via a three-hour tour with architectural historian and author Michael Stern , which includes the chance to visit private homes. Among the countless hotels decked out in midcentury-modern stylings for an overnight, the Parker Palm Springs remains the standout—a riot of color and witty touches from designer Jonathan Adler.

The Best New Wellness Retreats Around the World for 2024

Paso Robles, California

Just 20 years ago, there were about 50 wineries in and around this charming small town just over three hours from LA; now there are more than 300, and the area’s becoming more widely known for its fine Pinot Noirs and Zinfandels. The self-guided tour run by the Paso Wine Country Alliance is the quickest way to zip between vineyards, but it’s worth hiring local guide Coy Barnes, aka the Wine Wrangler , to drive you for the day if you’re keen to quaff at every tasting room. Some rooms at the Paso Robles Inn have hot tubs on their balconies (a nod to the town’s origins as a spa center) that are fed by water piped in from nearby hot springs.

Hotel Del Coronado San Diego California

San Diego, California

Beaches and green spaces are the defining assets of San Diego , just under a two-hour drive south of LA. There’s the 1,750-acre Torrey Pines State Reserve —kayak through the wetlands for an up-close view—and a namesake golf course with two 18-hole championship courses perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific; stay at the Arts & Crafts-style Lodge at Torrey Pines , right by the 18 th green. San Diego has 75 miles of coastline, featuring plenty of noteworthy beaches , most of them studded with surfers—hit Moonlight State Beach if you want to head out on the water, rent fishing gear, or snap a shot with the iconic Hotel Del Coronado as a backdrop from Coronado Beach. And even if San Diego has 24/7 beach weather, don’t forget: This is the Christmas Capital of America .

From Chicago

Saugatuck Michigan

Southwest Michigan

Saugatuck and its surroundings in Southwest Michigan have recently attracted newcomers due to a focus on the state’s extraordinary produce (Michigan is second only to California in agricultural diversity). Drive two and a half hours to eat at the delicious, diner-like Pennyroyal Cafe & Provisions from chef Melissa Corey, or taste some of the estate-grown vintages at Modales Wines . Work off your meal with a bracing hike to the top of Mount Baldhead for spectacular views. You’ll find all that in this corner of Michigan, plus the perennial bonus of gleaming beaches, charming all-American coastal towns, and the best sundowner spots in the state overlooking the lush waters of Lake Michigan.

Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

It might be three hours north of the city, but a trip here is like stepping decades into the past for a miles-long strip of world-class water parks. The Dells emerged as a family-friendly destination in the 1950s and has changed little since then. The best-known fun fest is the Kalahari , a resort with Master Blaster uphill water coasters plus an outdoor lazy river; but purists vouch for nearby Noah’s Ark , which boasts the largest number of water slides in the area. There are outdoorsy options for an adrenaline-powered weekend, too, like the six-acre, zip-line-filled Chula Vista Resort park. Just save room for some cheese curds—the best come from Carr Valley.

Lake Geneva Wisconsin

Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Just 90 minutes north of Chicago , this resort town is the Midwest’s answer to the Hamptons or Newport , made famous by the iconic families that helped build the Windy City (think Wrigley and Sears). The waterfront offers public access for more than 20 miles, thanks to an early treaty that ring-fenced the Shore Path from any development. Otherwise, expect ritzy Gilded Age mansions and over-the-top hotels like the magnificent Queen Anne-style Black Point Estate and Gardens , now a museum, or the turreted Baker House , ranked one of the town’s best hotels. Don’t assume it’s solely a warm-weather destination, though: Winterfest in January and February is a charming, less-trafficked option than midsummer.

Door County Wisconsin

Cave Point in Door County

Door County, Wisconsin

Much like Cape Cod curls into the Atlantic, this 75-mile peninsula juts into Lake Michigan like a raised finger, and it shares much with its New England counterpart. First emerging as an artsy summer colony, it has sandy, family-friendly beaches—more than 50 public ones—and 300 miles of shoreline. Come to Door County to amble around its galleries, or hike around the 14 miles of trails quilting its eastern tip in Whitefish Dunes. Make this a long weekend, as it’s almost a four-hour drive from Chicago, and don’t leave without making a pilgrimage to the Swedish restaurant Al Johnson’s , famous for the herd of goats grazing on its grassy roof.

From Washington, D.C.

Boonsboro Maryland

Crystal Grottoes in Boonsboro

Boonsboro, Maryland

A little over an hour northwest of Washington, D.C. , Boonsboro combines natural wonders with a sobering role in American history. Explore the stalactite-crusted Crystal Grottoes here—the Fairyland cave’s red tinge is thanks to iron oxide—or go whitewater rafting and tubing in the waters near Harpers Ferry. Then squeeze in a trip to the site of Antietam, the bloodiest battle on U.S. soil where 23,000 Civil War soldiers were killed or wounded within just 12 hours of fighting in 1862. Planning a romantic weekend? Nowhere better to overnight than Inn Boonsboro , owned by novelist Nora Roberts, where each of the eight rooms is named after a fictional couple like The Princess Bride’s Westley and Buttercup.

Alexandria Virginia

Alexandria, Virginia

It might only be a 20-minute drive away—or shorter, if you hop on the metro—but this historic town still feels like a getaway and consistently ranks among the top five small cities in the country in our Readers’ Choice Awards. It’s easy to see why: Historic architecture and cobbled streets are a glimpse back past the American Revolution to European settlers’ earliest days. Board the replica 18th-century, 110-foot sloop Providence, a Pirates of the Caribbean prop now moored here as a museum, or head to the Del Ray neighborhood for an assortment of street art that shows the city isn’t simply resting on the past. Stay at the Alexandrian, an Autograph Collection hotel right in the center of Old Town that overlooks the river from National Harbor.

Cape Hatteras North Carolina

Bodie Island Light Station in Cape Hatteras

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

It’s a long drive—around six hours—Cape Hatteras is still one of the best weekend getaways from D.C., thanks to the astonishing views and bracing air of the Outer Banks . The 70-mile-long National Seashore here was the first in the country and is anchored by the landmark Bodie Island Light Station, the tallest lighthouse in the U.S. with more than 200 stairs. Head to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum for a glimpse as to why these waters earned that nickname—more than 600 shipwrecks caused by treacherous, shifting shoals. Then again, with the right captain, you can brave those waters yourself on a fishing charter that can easily reach the Gulf Stream. The choice hotel is the charming Inn on Pamlico Sound ; wake up with its seaside view, and you’ll understand how worthwhile it is to splurge on a sound-front room.

Great Smoky Mountains West Virginia

Great Smoky Mountains

Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

Yes, it’s an eight-hour drive to reach this ridge, but the jaw-dropping scenery will make the effort more than worthwhile—and we’re not just talking about the sight of a statue of Dolly Parton as you reach the end, erected in her honor in the legend’s hometown of Sevierville.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited in the NPS network (and free to enter, too). It spreads across 500,000 acres in the Appalachian Mountains, straddling two states; the easiest entry point from D.C. is the Sugarlands Visitor Center near Gatlinburg. Once you’re in the park, start walking: There are 800 miles of trails in total, including a portion of the official Appalachian Trail. You can also enjoy a guided tour on horseback operated from several stables dotted around the reserve; just make sure to call ahead and book . The peak times for visiting include leaf-peeping season, of course, plus early summer, when the flame azaleas are in bloom. This is a year-round park, though, with plenty to enjoy even in winter, when the views from high perches like Clingman’s Dome are particularly impressive. In season, you can camp at one of ten different grounds (reserve a spot here ) or book a room at one of the hotels in Gatlinburg, which effectively serves as a resort community adjacent to the park.

Lake and wetlands with greenery and shrubbery and a small river leading to a small pond against a larger body of water...

Cassadaga, Florida

The hub of Volusia County, just east of Orlando and around four hours from Miami , is Cassadaga—a town whose residents will likely know you’re coming. Homes here are occupied by psychics and folks who generally believe in life after death, reincarnation, and the power of the spirits. Come to the Spiritualist Camp and check out the list of mediums and healers taking bookings that day, working on everything from past life regression to aura photography. One standout is Louis Gates , who grew up here as the child of two psychics; ask him about his childhood, as he has intriguing stories about life in Cassadaga, as well as a sixth sense ($50 for a half-hour session). There’s also a hotel in town .

Combine a look into your future with a glimpse at Orlando’s past: The Downtown Orlando Historic District is full of grand old mansions that offer a glimpse of how things used to be. This self-guided walking tour will let you explore all the best landmarked properties at your own leisurely pace.

Florida St. Petersburg Salvador Dali Museum

Dali Museum in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Florida

Is there anywhere that captures the essence of Florida more completely than St. Pete? It’s relaxed, rimmed by gorgeous beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, and resolutely determined to let any visitors shuck off their worries within minutes of arriving. If you haven’t decompressed over the four-hour drive, make for Paradise Grille immediately, where you’ll find dinner, ice-cold drinks, and acoustic music. Spend the rest of the day at Honeymoon Island or Caldesi Island State Parks, two of the area’s best waterfront spots. There’s another side to the city, too: The Dalí Museum , a longtime anchor of the culture scene, was recently joined by the Imagine Museum, which showcases the studio glass movement of the 1960s.

Key West Florida

Key West, Florida

The so-called Conch Republic has made its name as a kooky hideaway for America’s eccentrics—it even declared independence from the U.S. for a few days in 1982. It retains that offbeat, end-of-world appeal thanks to enduring sights like BO’s Fish Wagon, a bar on the waterfront that could be mistaken for a junkyard; but the last decade has seen a major upgrade in the accommodations on offer here. Try The Reach , the adult-aimed sister spot to the Waldorf Astoria located next door, which has its own private beach. Walk over to the Bahamian Village, with its ice cream-colored cigar makers’ cottages, and spend a lazy brunch (heck, the whole afternoon) al fresco at Blue Heaven , surrounded by its flock of resident chickens.

Aerial view of Florida Everglades

The Everglades

The Everglades, Florida

It takes barely an hour to hit the entrance of Everglades National Park from Miami, an almost 4 million-acre swampy prairie filled with rare crocodiles and dozens of remarkable birds. Skip the most popular route along the Tamiami Trail, and instead duck in just past Homestead at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center entrance , which is the best way to reach Flamingo , the only settlement actually inside the park. From there, it’s a windy, 40-minute drive south to the tip of the Everglades. There are trails en route—Nine Mile Pond is a canoeing trail even newbies can manage—before you hit the 19th-century settlement, named after the pink birds that flock here (likely not actually flamingos, but  roseate spoonbills, though that’s not quite as snappy a placename).

Take boat tours of the backcountry from the marina in Flamingo, or book a houseboat to get some sleep and keep exploring the next morning. Just remember to wear long pants and pack industrial-strength bug spray in abundance—the mosquitoes can be a menace here, year-round.

From Dallas

The water in Buffalo Springs at Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma is full of green plant life

Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma

Chickasaw Country, Oklahoma

Drive just two and a half hours and cross state lines to explore one of the most noteworthy Native American areas in the U.S. It was here, in South Central Oklahoma, that the Chickasaw Tribe relocated after being forcibly driven from their ancestral lands near the Lower Mississippi in the 1830s. In the almost 200 years since, they’ve established a new homeland in Chickasaw Country, including an impressive center to learn about their culture, where there are artifacts, stomp dance performances, and a historically accurate recreation of a village from the 1700s.

Stay at the Chickasaw-operated Artesian Hotel , with views out across the countryside, and be sure to pack your hiking boots. The Chickasaw National Recreation Area is Oklahoma’s oldest national park area, with plenty of activities for travelers: It has plenty of short and easy trails like Bison Pasture and Veterans Lake, as well as superb fishing in the manmade Lake of the Arbuckles, with catfish, perch, and bass in abundance.

Fredericksburg Texas Downtown

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg and wine country, Texas

Fredericksburg is the best base for exploring Texas wine country , just over a four-hour drive from Dallas . A 14,000-square-mile stretch with more than 30 wineries, it’s the second largest wine region in America after Napa. Bending Branch, south of town, is known for its vintages of Tannat, a grape that thrives in the hot, dry climate. Don’t miss the chance to stroll around the charming, historic downtown founded in the 1840s by a Prussian baron—stay at the Hoffmann Haus , a German-inflected B&B, to feel the history.

Round Top Cafe in Texas. Image shot 2005

Round Top, Texas

If whimsy were a place, it would be this offbeat town three hours south of Dallas . It becomes an antiquing hub each spring, luring 200,000 or more shoppers to browse the bric-a-brac, but there’s also superb shopping year-round at stores like the 1920s-era farmhouse Townsend Provisions . Hotel Rancho Pillow is the mascot for Round Top, a riot of bohemian color where owner Sheila Youngblood rents an eclectic assortment of accommodations on her 20-acre homestead. Ask about the sheet-rocked teepee, and try riding the mechanical bull if you dare.

Palo Duro Canyon. Texas

Palo Duro, Texas

This, the second largest canyon in America after the Grand Canyon , is a suitably epic Panhandle destination about a six-hour drive from Dallas. It’s worth every minute on the road once you’re standing by the 120-mile gash in the earth that plunges almost 1,000 feet. Come to hike, bike, and ride horses; there are almost 90 miles of trails in the state park, with the most popular runs located along the floor of the canyon. Offset the exertion by hunkering down at one of the chic cabins at Dove’s Rest , with a superb view out across the canyon proper. Each cabin has a propane grill and fire pit so you can BBQ each night under the stars.

Getaway to Long Beach

How to spend a day or a weekend at Long Beach

beach long weekend trips

Christian Hundley / TripSavvy

Often overlooked as a tourist destination, Long Beach offers a central location for exploring other parts of the Los Angeles area. It's close to major freeways and also has some nice attractions of its own. You can plan your Long Beach day trip or weekend getaway using the resources below.

Best Time to Go to Long Beach

Like most California coastal places, Long Beach gets its best weather in spring and fall. During summer, the all-day, onshore marine layer that locals call " June Gloom " can keep your days gray and misty, but you'll see less of that here than in other Los Angeles beach towns.

Things to Do in Long Beach

Our readers say the Aquarium of the Pacific is California's best. As Southern California's largest aquarium it focuses on the Pacific shore of North America and the tropical South Pacific. It's a fun place for kids of any age and adults too, with lots of interactive exhibits and touching pools. For an extra fee, you can enjoy special animal interaction experiences and behind the scenes tours.

The Queen Mary is also a well-known Long Beach attraction. Some visitors still like it, but in my opinion, the visitor experience has taken a turn for the worse. It may be worth a visit if you have a specific interest. Otherwise, you may enjoy doing something else instead. Also, it's probably not something young children find interesting.  Find out more in the Queen Mary visitor guide .

Other things to check out:

  • Art Walk: The East Village Arts District (bounded by Ocean Blvd, Long Beach Blvd, 6th St. and Alamitos Ave.) offers galleries, art walks, free events and a First Fridays street fair . We also like the Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave), a contemporary art museum (works since 1945) perhaps best described as displaying contemporary works that happen to come from Latin America and reflect the culture they were created in.
  • Shopping: You'll find lots of interesting local shops and boutiques in Belmont Shore (a couple of miles south and easy to reach using local buses), or browse for vintage clothing and furnishing on 4th Street's Retro Row (4th between Cherry and Junipero). The third Sunday of Every Month, the Long Beach Antiques and Collectible Market is one of the area's best.
  • Naples Gondola Ride : Friendly gondoliers and charming houses lining hidden canals make for a perfect ride. They cruise from mid-day to almost midnight, but sunset is especially pretty and popular. If you're looking for a place to propose marriage, you could do worse: their acceptance record is near-perfect. Almost every Long Beach native will suggest a gondola ride during your trip.
  • Nightlife : Long Beach is a popular nightlife center with a range of clubs and performance venues to choose from. For an evening drink with a view, try the Sky Room at The Breakers or the Observation Bar at the Queen Mary, which has an outdoor dining and viewing area where you can step out and see the coastal views of Southern California.
  • Run Around: Take a Segway tour or rent one at  Long Beach Segway Tours for a spin around the shoreline. For a quiet cruise around the Naples canals, pack a picnic and rent an electric Duffy Boat from London Boat Rentals .

Annual Events

It seems like there's always something going on in Long Beach. These are the busiest events, ones which are popular and will require some planning for, but you'll find plenty more at the visitor's bureau website .

  • April: Toyota Grand Prix car race. For a bird's eye view in the middle of the action, try the Hyatt
  • May: Gay Pride Parade
  • Summer: You can find lots of summer concerts to attend in this guide.
  • December: The uber-old-fashioned Belmont Shore Christmas Parade takes place the first weekend in December, followed by the Naples Boat Parade the following weekend.

Tips for Visiting Long Beach

  • Long Beach is very busy during the annual Toyota Grand Prix (April). Either plan ahead if you want to go or plan around it if you don't.
  • If you need help downtown, look for a Downtown Guide wearing a red jacket. They can help you find whatever you need.
  • If you're around such popular destinations as the Aquarium or the Queen Mary, take advantage of Long Beach Transit's free shuttle bus that makes several stops around the Long Beach area. The easy way to find it is through Google Maps, which will show you the nearest stop. Just look for the word Passport in the route description.

Where to Stay

Our favorite place to stay in Long Beach is the Varden Hotel , a privately-owned boutique hotel with lots of personality - and exceptional customer focus. Hotel Maya is also a fun retreat that blend's Southern California culture with its Latin American influence, but its location across the water from downtown makes it slightly less convenient.

For help getting the best possible deal, go straight to Tripadvisor's guest reviews and price comparisons on hotels in Long Beach .

Getting to Long Beach and Getting Around

Long Beach is right in the middle of the Los Angeles metro coast. If you live in LA, forget the freeway - take the Metro instead. Long Beach is 106 miles from San Diego, 137 from Bakersfield, 244 from Fresno.

The nearest airport is the Long Beach Airport (LGB).

If you choose a hotel in downtown Long Beach, it's easy enough to leave the vehicle behind. You'll have plenty of transportation options which can get you to any of the places we mention above. Passport buses are free within downtown and very affordable to go elsewhere. You can take the Aquabus from downtown to the Aquarium of the Pacific, Queen Mary, Shoreline Village, and Pine Avenue Circle. And the Aqualink takes you to Alamitos Bay and Naples.

Long Weekend Getaways: Five Easy Beach Escapes From Orlando

Aerial view of Florida Beach in Summer

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

As part of a series on long weekend getaways , we're showing you how to make the most of your summer Fridays, school breaks and the season's extra-long days. Check back every week for inspired itineraries and easy city escapes.

Chances are the theme parks are what lure you to Orlando (or perhaps you just call this central Florida city home). But if you've had your fill of rides and character parades, consider checking out the great beach destinations within driving distance of the Mouse.

From surfing in the Atlantic Ocean to paddleboarding in the Gulf of Mexico, Orlando is close to a variety of beach towns — each one with its own distinct vibe. Just an hour-long drive away, for example, is Daytona Beach — home to a new Hard Rock Hotel and a delightfully kitschy aesthetic. Or if a half-day Friday is just the beginning of a long Florida vacation, tack on a trip to Amelia Island (three hours from Orlando).

No matter what stretch of Florida beach you find yourself on, you can always just dig your toes in the sand and call it a day.

Daytona Beach

Distance from Orlando: 1 hour

Best for: Parents who want to relive their spring break glory days.

Thanks to its 23 miles of white sand beach (and the thousands of college students who descended upon the city in the 1980s and 1990s), Daytona Beach has earned itself a rather rowdy reputation. But this beach town on a wide stretch of Atlantic shoreline is still cloaked in delightful Old Florida kitsch. During a weekend in Daytona Beach, explore old-school surf shops, ride a Ferris wheel at the Daytona Beach Boardwalk & Pier or catch a concert at the Daytona Beach Bandshell. For amazing beach views, climb the 175-foot Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse & Museum , the tallest in the state. Sports fans can catch a game at the Jackie Robinson Ballpark, the site of the first integrated pro baseball game, or take a behind-the-scenes tour of the famous Daytona International Speedway .

Where to stay : The new Hard Rock Hotel Daytona Beach

With a guitar-shaped kids' pool and Taylor Swift's bikini hanging in the lobby (part of the resort's renowned memorabilia collection), this new beach resort that opened in March appeals to music lovers young and old. Set the mood with complimentary vinyl records you can rock out to on your in-room turntable, take a dip in the oceanfront pool with its underwater sound system or simply collect seashells on some of the most famous shoreline in the world. Use the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and book at Hotels.com to get 10x miles on your stay through Jan. 31, 2020. And don't forget that the Hotels.com Rewards program gets you one free night for every 10 paid nights you stay, effectively boosting your return to 20% when you pay with the Venture card.

Don't miss: All Hard Rock hotel guests have access to their choice of Fender instruments for in-room use. Headphones are included, so you can jam out without your neighbors complaining.

Anna Maria Island

Distance from Orlando: 2 hours

Best for: Families in search of the laid-back island dream — if only for a long weekend.

At just seven miles long and with a 35 miles-per-hour speed limit, this barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico comprises not one, but three, beach towns: Bradenton Beach, Anna Maria and Holmes Beach. It's perfect for exploring on scooter or bicycle. Discover tropical boutiques and mom-and-pop ice cream shops in the island's two primary villages, and rent a kayak or paddleboard from Beach Bums Island Latitude so you can glide along the island's quiet bays and back canals, where you're likely to spot dolphins and manatees.

Where to stay: Waterline Marina Resort & Beach Club

Featuring stylish suites and boat slips for guests who arrive by water, this new resort has no shortage of coastal charm. Rent a charter boat for a family outing, book a guided fishing excursion or pick up a kayak at Waterline's Beach Club. You can also book unusual activities, such as the art of fish painting, that are open to locals as well as guests — making it easy to get to know the islanders. As the property is part of Marriott's Autograph Collection of hotels, you can book it for between 35,000 and 40,000 points per night. If you need to stock up on points, consider the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card, which is currently offering new cardholders 75,000 points after spending $3,000 in the first three months. If you have Starpoints, you can also transfer those over to Marriott at a 1:3 ratio.

Don't miss: Enjoy sunset drinks at the Sandbar and fresh seafood at Beach Bistro , both nestled right on the Gulf of Mexico.

Amelia Island

Distance from Orlando: 3 hours

Best for: Couples in need of a relaxing getaway.

Only 18 miles long and three miles wide, this northeast Florida isle near the Georgia border has a quaint 50-block downtown, Fernandina Beach, that's home to lovely Victorian-, Queen Anne- and Italianate-style homes and inns, many of them listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Peruse the boutiques on the main drag, Centre Street, and sample the sweets at Fantastic Fudge (be sure to buy extra for the drive back to Orlando). During your weekend on Amelia Island, drop by the Palace Saloon , billed as the state's oldest bar, for a pour of the signature Pirate's Punch. Wrap up your day with a narrated horse-drawn carriage tour at sunset.

Where to stay: Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort

This massive resort is spread across 1,350 acres of beachfront. Rent a bike or golf cart from Amelia's Wheels and explore nature trails as well as quiet marshes and lagoons, where the birds chirping are the only sounds you'll hear. Stroll the Shops at Amelia Island Plantation, where you'll find a fantastic French deli, Marché Burette, and the Natural Slice pizzeria — just two of the noteworthy restaurants and stores flanking a picturesque little pond. Golfers have their choice of three championship courses, while the plantation's 3.5 miles of secluded beaches are perfect for loungers armed with a good book . Stay on the beach after dark and reserve a private campfire complete with s'mores. Book with the Capital One Venture Card to get 10x miles when you make the reservation at Hotels.com, or use the Citi Prestige Card to get a fourth night free when you book through the Citi concierge.

Don't m iss : Go horseback riding on the beach or inside Amelia Island State Park with the family-owned Kelly Seahorse Ranch .

St. Pete Beach

Best for: Families trying to travel back in time.

Pink sunsets and gentle surf define this low-key, central Florida beach town on the Gulf of Mexico. Flip-flops and swimsuit cover-ups are the dress code of choice here, as lounging on the beach with a frozen cocktail tends to be the main attraction. When you're ready to get out of the sun, hop on the free beach trolley to visit the eclectic shops in the historic 8th Avenue shopping district, reserve a spot on the Shell Key Shuttle for a 10-minute trip to Shell Island for snorkeling and shelling, or head over to the historic Merry Pier for excellent fishing.

Where to stay: The Don CeSar Beach Resort

This historic hotel, with its prime beachfront location and flamingo-pink facade accented by bell towers and turrets, has been hard to miss since it opened its doors in 1928. The Gatsby-like vibe is at once beachy and luxurious, all while being exceptionally family-friendly. The property boasts spacious suites, multiple oceanfront pools, a 1950s-era ice cream shop named Uncle Andy's and all manner of water sports — Jet Skis, banana boats, paddle boards — available right on the beach. Check the kiddos into Camp CeSar and visit the spa for a massage on the rooftop terrace, complete with 360-degree Gulf views. You can book a paid stay through Chase's Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection — available to holders of cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, Ink Business Preferred Credit Card and United Explorer Card — to enjoy benefits such as complimentary daily breakfast for two, room upgrades when available and late checkout.

Don't miss : The Don CeSar lobby bar has a resident piano player who fills the air with jazzy tunes every night. Order an Old Fashioned and take in the vibe as if Gatsby himself was about to arrive.

Cocoa Beach

Distance from Orlando : 1.5 hours

Best for: Adventurous travelers eager to experience Florida's surf culture.

A barrier island nestled between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, Cocoa Beach offers six miles of wide, sandy beaches. The hometown of world champion surfer Kelly Slater is also home to the flagship Ron Jon Surf Shop, the world's largest surf store, which means there may be no better place to learn to ride waves during your Florida vacation. Stretching 800 feet over the ocean, the historic Cocoa Beach Pier is a hub for waterfront dining, live music and quirky gift shops. Pick up a rod, bait and tackle on site and cast a line over the side of the pier. On the other side of the island, take a guided tour through the Indian River Lagoon's 1,000 Islands with Cocoa Beach Kayaking . Feast on fresh seafood on the tiki deck at Coconuts On the Beach, where you can watch cruise ships coming in and out of Port Canaveral and a beach volleyball game is almost always in session. Meet up with locals at historic Cocoa Village, a nostalgic riverside district filled with shops, restaurants and artist studios.

Where to stay: The Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront

Smack in the middle of the action, the Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront offers on-site surf lessons as well as boogie boards, bike and beach rentals. Spend some time on the shore before kicking back poolside at Longboards Tiki Beach Grille. Stretch your legs with a walk down the street to check out the Ron Jon Surf Shop and "I Dream of Jeannie" Lane, the backdrop for the popular 1960s sitcom. Use points from a card such as the Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express (currently offering new cardholders 150,000 bonus points after they spend $4,000 in the first three months) to book an award stay, starting at 40,000 points a night.

The ultimate long weekend in Miami's South Beach

beach long weekend trips

Plan your weekend away in Miami with this guide to the best things to do in and around South Beach © Boogich / Getty Images

A New York winter (even a mild one) turns one's skin to an ashen hue that is death-like. The solution is to head south. Miami has long been an escape for those of us trapped in the doldrums of the Northeast. I try to get there every year, and I’ve mastered the long weekend.

I like to stretch my weekends whenever I can to include the whole of Friday, and I stay in Miami Beach because I want to see the ocean as often as possible. Here are my recommendations, along with a few tips:

  • When to arrive: If you can, arrive on Thursday night to make it a 3-day weekend.
  • How to get from the airport: Grab an Uber or Lyft from the airport – there is not a lot of good public transportation . Expect to pay around a $50 fare to get to  South Beach . Do better, MIA!
  • Getting around town: Miami Beach has free trolleys that will shuttle you pretty much wherever you want to go, with an app that provides live tracking info. There’s also Citi Bike .
  • Where to stay: There are so many hotels in South Beach, from the budget-friendly Freehand Miami to the less-budget-friendly Ritz Carlton South Beach . These days I stay at a friend's apartment, which is basically an AirBnB with my bffs as hosts.
  • What to pack: Take your casual beach clothes and something a bit more snazzy if you plan to go out for dinner. Don't forget a hat, bathing suit, good walking shoes and SPF.

Two people walk by a pink and yellow art deco-style lifeguard hut on a sandy beach

Morning: Wake up early and make your way to the boardwalk for a morning stroll. Stop for coffee along the way. Crema  – either on Collins or on Washington near 16th – is a terrific local coffee choice. Grab yourself an iced coffee and croissant to go.

The boardwalk is 7 miles from South Pointe all the way north to Surfside. Between 7 and 8am, I like to walk some of it , often stopping to take photos of the colorful, retro lifeguard stands. It's quiet and calm at this time, and sometimes I'll take off my shoes and get my feet wet walking along the shoreline. Top tip: set a timer if you have other responsibilities today – such as work – it's easy to lose track of time.

How to spend the day: Working from Miami is the jam. I like the Betsy Hotel ’s Panther Coffee shop , which is at the rear of the hotel and has its own entrance. The Betsy’s whole vibe is literary and artsy, with vintage photographs on the walls. As a writer/editor, it really gets my creative juices flowing. I’ll pop over to La Sandwicherie for lunch and eat that on the grass at Lummus Park a block away.

Dinner: Dinner at Joe’s Stone Crab is an initiation for first timers. Operating since 1913, it has been a Miami dining institution for over a century, and still draws throngs to tie on a bib and suck on succulent crab meat. It tops many best lists for a very good reason: freshness – Joe's catches its own crabs! I also recommend  Mandolin , a bistro that specializes in Aegean cuisine, with influences from the Greek Islands and the Turkish coast.

After dark: I’m an early bird and Miami is a late-night party town. I don’t do the latter, so feel free to open a new window to see Thrillist’s excellent guide to Miami’s club scene  (but please come back!).

A small boy wearing water wings jumps into a hotel pool that's surrounded by sun loungers

Morning: Wake up and walk to Pura Vida , a healthy(ish) local chain where you can get breakfast sandwiches and other treats that cater to vegetarians and vegans all day long – I love the avocado toast.

How to spend the day: Saturday is pool day and you have plenty of choices. Most pools have DJs and private cabanas for rent, but there are smaller, more mellow places to relax too. I like the chilled-out vibes of  Carillion Wellness Resort . Whatever you’re after, your secret weapon to access a hotel pool is Resort Pass . It sells day passes at various price points to several South Beach hotel pools, as well as beach and spa passes, so you don’t need to stay the night to enjoy the day.

I like to stroll the boardwalk again because in contrast to Friday morning's tranquility, it is a scene on a Saturday with people walking, biking, running and rollerblading. The parade of distinct humanity you’ll encounter is truly one of South Beach’s best sights, along with its architecture of course (more on that later.)

Dinner: Saturday night, begs for dinner at Tropazon on Española Way. It does close-your-eyes-and-you’re-in-Spain tapas, and its gin selection is miraculous. I love a snacky dinner that gives the table a chance to taste everything, and I love gin even more.

After dark: Head to Medium Cool for a nightcap and live jazz – the perfect way to wind down a Miami Saturday.

People wander among market stalls along a palm-lined street on a sunny day

Morning: Go to the Lincoln Road Antique and Collectible Market in the morning. It is so fun to browse for anything from table lamps to caftans to vintage band t-shirts. Graze for your breakfast at the onsite farmers market.

How to spend the day: Grab a quick, casual lunch and a glass of wine at A Folie Cafe , a small French bistro on a less touristy block of Española Way, before heading out on an Art Deco Walking Tour .

I like to save the best for last and this tour is the ultimate way to see all of the architectural icons in South Beach. An expert guide will share historical tidbits about the influences of old Hollywood and the mob, as well as more contextual information about art deco design itself.

Then you’ll have to head back to the airport. But Miami has so much to see and do and I’ve only scratched the surface. Check out all our Miami and Florida coverage, especially if you’re planning a longer trip. Adios South Beach!

Visitors and residents bicycle and walk on the Florida Keys’ Old Seven Mile Bridge Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, in Marathon, Fla. The 110-year-old span formally opened Wednesday after a ceremony marked the completion of a four-year, $44 million restoration project. The old bridge originally was part of Henry Flagler’s Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad that was completed in 1912. It later became the centerpiece of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, but was replaced in 1982 with a new span. The old bridge is closed to vehicles but open to pedestrians and bicycles. The Long Weekend Trips Travel + Leisure Editors Can't Wait to Take

Need some inspiration for a long weekend getaway? We've got you covered.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

Editor’s Note: Travel might be complicated right now, but use our inspirational trip ideas to plan ahead for your next bucket list adventure.

Long weekends – whether brought on by national holidays, summer Fridays, or that rogue PTO day you’ve been hoarding – offer the ideal window for a brief reset and change of scenery. Especially now, as people have been quarantining at home and socially distancing while out, you might need a vacation more than ever. In fact, spending a mere 72 hours away can provide a much-needed recharge when you don’t have weeks of vacation to spare.

That said, pinning down a place to visit can be tough when you only have a few days. You’ll want a destination that feels like a real holiday, but is also conveniently located so you won’t have to waste much time on the road (or in the air), as well as feels safe, especially now.

Dreaming of a beach vacation on an island? Head to Bermuda , just a 90-minute flight from New York City, for scuba diving, snorkeling, cliff-diving, or relaxing on one of the many beautiful stretches of sand. Seeking a bit more adventure? Gas up the car and spend your long weekend hiking in Acadia National Park in Maine. Or, do you prefer a bustling city? Philadelphia might be your ticket. No matter where your next vacation takes you, be sure to check state and country guidelines and protocols before visiting.

Here’s where Travel + Leisure editors are hoping to jet off to for a long weekend, from the mountains to beaches and everything in between. As for mustering up the motivation to return to work on Monday – well, that’s on you.

“I went to Bermuda for the first time last fall and fell in love with the island’s brilliant colors and drowsy rhythm. Had I stayed in the capital, Hamilton, I’m sure I would have done a little more sightseeing. But at Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa, a secluded, adults-only paradise on the island’s west end, I relished in my supremely lazy schedule. I’d wake up each morning at 11 a.m., hit a different stretch of pink sand every day (the property is home to four private beaches), enjoy a lunch of fresh fish and a Rum Swizzle at the hotel’s Breezes restaurant, and then watch the sunset from my pastel-pink cottage. This time around, I plan to break up some of the slothfulness with at least a few excursions to island landmarks, like St. Peter’s Church and Fort St. Catherine.” — Siobhan Reid , Associate Editor

“I made my first trip to Twin Farms in March — and can't wait to go back. This storied inn in rural Vermont is a mainstay in our World’s Best Awards — and for good reason. The 300-acre property, once the estate of Sinclair Lewis and Dorothy Thompson, has everything you’d want for a getaway, from snowshoeing and Japanese baths (for when the weather is still wintry) to canoeing and fly-fishing (for when it starts to warm up). I was there for a food-focused weekend: The resort welcomed chef Jess Shadbolt (of King, one of my fave New York restaurants) and Kristin Tice from the Rosé Project dinner series, who hosted wine tastings, culinary workshops, and some very Vermont multi-course meals.” — Hannah Walhout , Associate Editor

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

“I grew up outside of Boston, and Cape Cod is still one of my favorite places to escape to for a long summer weekend. It's pure nostalgia: mom n' pop ice cream shops, clapboard seafood shacks, old-school drive-ins , quaint towns filled with locals rather than swanky big-city folks who fly in for the weekend, and serene dune-backed beaches with lighthouses and swaying seagrass. Round up some friends, rent one of the Cape's signature shingled cottages for the weekend, and go on a lobster roll crawl to find your favorite. Just don't expect to find Hampton-style mansions filled with finance-types who come for the sceney bars or pool float Instagrams — which is, frankly, precisely why I love it.” — Karen Chen , Editorial Producer

Finger Lakes, New York

“I've been visiting the Finger Lakes region of New York for years, despite the fact that it's a long drive from my home in NYC. That's about to change, though, when The Lake House on Canandaigua , a new hotel in the Finger Lakes, starts seaplane service between the city and upstate this summer. You can bet I'll be onboard, hopefully enjoying a glass of riesling on the way.” — Paul Brady , Articles Editor

Jersey Shore, New Jersey

“It may be a slightly controversial opinion, but I love the Jersey Shore (the place, not the reality show). I've always been a sucker for quaint little beach towns , and the Garden State's 130-mile coastline definitely delivers. Because most of the breezy seaside communities are just a couple of hours from my NYC apartment, I can spend long weekends hopping from one town to another. From the big, colorful Victorian homes of serene Cape May to the bustling boardwalk in Ocean City (where no trip is complete without a stop at the town's eponymous Coffee Company), New Jersey's shoreline is the perfect, quick escape to a salty, sea-aired paradise.” — Hillary Maglin , Assistant Digital Editor

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

“I visit friends in Philadelphia about once a year, and the summer is one of my favorite times to go. From grabbing a coffee at One Shot Cafe in the Northern Liberties neighborhood and strolling around to look at the beautiful townhomes to trying out a new restaurant for dinner and hitting up a beer hall, there’s no shortage of things to do. The people are friendly, history can be found around every corner, and there’s a fun and inventive food scene (including Philly cheesesteaks, in my book, of course). Plus, it’s a quick car or train ride from NYC, making it a perfectly manageable weekend trip.” — Madeline Diamond , Associate Digital Editor

Upstate New York

“Since moving to New York, making a trip upstate has become my favorite way to spend a long weekend. It’s easy, affordable, and the scenery is beautiful. My friends and I have gotten Airbnbs in places like Cold Spring, Woodstock, and Saratoga Springs . We love to find new hikes, try local restaurants and just take in the fresh air. I’m excited to see which town we decide to explore this year!” — Samantha Lauriello , Associate Social Editor

Acadia National Park, Maine

“My husband and I love Maine , and for years, we've talked about spending a long weekend exploring Acadia National Park. Under Canvas is scheduled to open its first East Coast location there this summer, and the views of the coastline should be amazing. Plus, we love to hike , so the camp's proximity to the Cadillac Mountain Trail is a huge plus.” — Sarah Bruning , Senior Editor

“I did a lot of staycations when I first moved to New York City five years ago and couldn’t afford to travel. It wasn’t a total change of scenery, per se, but I found that even escaping my cramped apartment helped me break up the city grind and hit reset. I plan on getting back into the staycation groove by booking a weekend stay at the High Line Hotel , my favorite hotel in the city. It’s a little jewel-box of a place, housed inside a historic seminary and decorated with vintage furniture and antique rugs. And on weekends, when the weather's good, the hotel’s lobby-level Intelligentsia coffee shop fills with fashionable locals who come to grab a coffee and read the paper on the property’s sun-strewn back courtyard.” — Siobhan Reid , Associate Editor

America’s Best Long Weekend Getaways

Of course you want months off for vacation. Who doesn’t? But sometimes the best we can do is a restorative (or raucous) two-night weekend trip to somewhere fantastic. Here, the highlights from 13 of our favorite quick trips.

Asheville, North Carolina

For a low-key romantic weekend away, the art-centric mountain town of Asheville won’t do you wrong. Perhaps the crowning jewel of the trendy yet traditional city, the Biltmore Estate simply isn’t to be missed. The 250-room Gilded Age chateau sits on 8,000 acres of highly-curated gardens and meadow (all designed by the very guy behind NYC’s Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted) with the Blue Ridge Mountains serving as a super casual backdrop. Peeling yourself away from the largest mansion in the U.S., you’ll get your night’s sleep at The Windsor Boutique Hotel , a homey 14-suite rustic stay right in the heart of downtown. End your mini-retreat with brunch at Cúrate , a buzzy tapas-inspired restaurant with crowd pleasers like honey-drizzled fried eggplant and traditional tortilla española.

Seattle, Washington

Kimpton Hotels know how to turn on the quirk, and the historic Palladian is no exception. Guest rooms at the Belltown spot work screenprinted Mr. T and David Bowie pillows, vintage maps, and smart brass fixtures into an otherwise classic mix. Two blocks away, you’ll find the famous Pike Place Market , your go-to place for quick bites, while luxe sit-down meals are best at The Butcher’s Table , which delivers with a raw bar, inventive sides, and every cut of steak known to man. To walk it all off, head for exhibits at Chihuly Garden and Glass , an IG goldmine dripping in galleries of vibrant glass sculptures—the center of which is a suspended red, yellow, and amber floral piece that lives in the Glasshouse.

Miami Beach, Florida

Bed down at the ultra-quirky Freehand Miami for a stay packed with vintage travel ephemera, mod furniture (making use of a ROYGBIV palette), and a social courtyard with a pool, bocce, yoga, and art classes. Dinner is to be had at Byblos , a design-savvy, family-style Eastern Mediterranean joint that serves up duck kibbeh, Persian fried chicken, and fattouche, in an impossibly bright (and chic) dining room. Art is all around in the Magic City, and to see the best of it, you don’t need a ticket or a proper tour—simply take yourself on a self-guided walk around Ocean Drive’s Art Deco and Art Nouveau buildings, making sure to stop for photos at favorites like Hotel Breakwater South Beach , the Leslie Hotel , the Essex House Hotel , and The Tides South Beach .

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The boutique Palomar Philadelphia deftly spins an eccentric take on a classic American design scheme with neon presidential portraits, rainbow-hued busts, and plush velvet seating. Take an hour or so to hit Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens , a museum, outdoor art installation, and indoor gallery from mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar, which takes up half a block on the once-dilapidated (and now handsomely revitalized) South Street. Or swing by the Barnes Foundation  to see a stunning display of French impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. For some Philly history that isn’t the Liberty Bell, you can check out Eastern State Penitentiary —a massive, fortified prison that once held Al Capone—on an audio-guided tour narrated by the one and only Steve Buscemi. Afterwards, skip the over-hyped cheesesteaks at dueling shops Geno’s and Pat’s , and head instead for the Reading Terminal Market , where you can nom on pad thai, oyster sliders, and sweet dessert crepes all under one roof.

Austin, Texas

A weekend is all you need to see the very best of Texas’s coolest city. Kick it off with a locals-only brunch at Elizabeth St. Cafe , a chic French-Vietnamese boulangerie where coconut water and preserved tangerine margaritas are served in Chinese takeout containers. Newer spots on our radar include the Southern-inspired Colleens Kitchen, Pool Burger (we love the Blue Hawaiian, topped with grilled pineapple slices, bacon, crumbled blue cheese, and Thousand Island dressing), and Aviary Wine & Kitchen. For some retail therapy, head to South Congress for an afternoon at the boutiques; United Apparel Liquidators is the place for designer couture (Balenciaga, Rag & Bone, Givenchy, to name a few) at bargain basement discounts. Don’t leave the city without going for a dip at Barton Springs Pool , the aquifer-fed swimming hole of choice where a young Robert Redford learned how to swim.

Chicago, Illinois

You can’t go to Chi-town without stopping by the Art Institute of Chicago . We’d say the same about leafy Garfield Park Conservatory , built on nearly five acres in 1906 and often referred to as “landscape art under glass;” the Chicago architecture river cruise ; and, of course, Wrigley Field . (Yes, all of these are touristy, but so worth it.) You could spend an entire weekend eating your way through this city. Some of our favorite spots to hit up now include the Michelin-starred brewpub, Band of Bohemia; the wildly popular Korean-American restaurant, Parachute (book early!); and the British-inspired Owen and Engine , which serves one of the finest burgers in town. As for where to stay, we’re digging Hotel Zachary , with its stunning grand staircase and knockout views of Wrigley Field from almost every room.

Boulder, Colorado

Just north of Denver, an outdoorsy paradise where locals are tanned, toned, and likely just back from a trail run awaits. Catch up with the best of them on the one-mile First Flatiron trail , which winds through Boulder’s iconic sandstone slab rock formations. Break for afternoon tea in an intricately carved wooden teahouse at Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse originally made in Tajikistan—it’s a highbrow prelude to an afternoon tour of Avery Brewing , home to the hoppy India Pale Ale. After a couple of brews, head back to your hotel (there’s the funky, low-key Basecamp and more upscale St. Julien Hotel and Spa ) for a quick nap before dinner at the ever-popular northeastern Italian-inspired restaurant Frasca Food and Wine run by Chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson.

New Orleans, Louisiana

In the land of beignets, po’ boys and kicked-up cajun cuisine, a weekend in NOLA is all about EATING. Start the gluttony with the classic creole-inspired brunch (and 25 cent martinis!) at Commander’s Palace —the wild Louisiana white shrimp stuffed with spicy tasso ham, Crystal hot sauce, pickled okra, and pepper jelly is a must. And we can’t leave out classics like Cafe Du Monde’s famous deep-fried pastry, Bon Ton Cafe’s jambalaya, and Bevi Seafood Co.’s peacemaker po’ boy full of fried shrimp, swiss cheese, and roast beef gravy with a side of seafood gumbo. Newcomers worth checking out include Josephine Estelle , the Italian osteria at the Ace Hotel . Alternatively, skip all of that and go from breakfast to lunch to dinner at the Roch Market food hall. You’ll want to pack those fat pants.

Savannah, Georgia

Warning: A trip to Savannah is highly caloric. But if you don’t indulge, you’re not doing it right. The line runs down the block for Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room , for very good reason: the fried chicken, candied yams, and macaroni and cheese are so good, you’ll want to get in line all over again for dinner. Explore the city’s art scene at the various galleries around City Market on your own or sign up for a tour on the second Saturday of every month. History buffs can learn about Savannah’s past at the 1868 Mercer Williams House , the former home of Jim Williams and the site of the killing of Danny Hansford in May of 1981 (remember, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil?). It’s also worth checking out the iconic Bonaventure Cemetery , dripping in Spanish moss and rumored to be full of ghosts—you can shake off the heebie-jeebies with a jalapeño margarita at the 18th century Olde Pink House .

San Diego, California

Of course, you’ll want to hit the beach in San Diego. La Jolla Cove is our personal favorite, with verdant grass that leads to craggy cliffs, but there’s so much more to do in this SoCal city. Wander the 15 (!) museums at the 1,200-acre Balboa Park , hike to the lagoon at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve , and feast on some of the best Mexican food north of the border at Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop (we love the steak, shrimp, avocado and chipotle taco).

Portland, Oregon

Portland has a reputation for being the Brooklyn of the West—which isn’t entirely unfounded, given its profusion of microbrews and macro-beards. Your first stop: Ned Ludd , where almost everything on the menu (local rabbit and roasted radishes, or chocolate chip cookies in a cast iron pan, for example) is cooked on a wood fire. Hike through the rainforest to feel the spray of the 627-foot waterfall at Multnomah Falls , just half an hour from downtown Portland. Leave time for a trip to peruse the two million-some volume at Powell’s City of Books , a local favorite on Burnside St.

Palm Springs, California

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elizabeth Taylor — a who’s who of showbiz has long found solace in Palm Springs. Today this desert oasis is the perfect mix of modern and kitschy which attracts a hip L.A. crowd. Spend an afternoon wandering the Uptown Design District, where eye-catching boutiques (we love the Midcentury housewares at Christopher Anthony ) are joined by retro-chic restaurants and bars. Bootlegger Tiki , Palm Canyon Drive’s mixology-centered newcomer, has a 12–2 a.m. happy hour, kitschy luau-themed décor, and hangover-worthy cocktails (we love the cheekily-named Mango Unchained.) If live music is what you seek, check out Melvyn’s , the storied supper club-style hangout once frequented by Ol’ Blue Eyes himself.

Shelter Island, New York

The 12-square-mile atoll sits between the tony North Fork and the Hamptons but feels a hushed world away (more than a third of the area is fiercely protected by the Nature Conservancy). Here, it’s all about unwinding, from the golden-sand beaches and hiking paths to farm fresh produce and sunset cocktails. The island’s newest place to bed down is Chequit Inn , with 37 shabby-chic rooms, C.O. Bigelow toiletries, and complimentary breakfast. For dinner, don’t miss the Montauk pearl oysters and lobster pot pie at Vine Street Café (or pick up goodies to go at the food market out back).

The Ultimate Beach Packing List for a Weeklong Vacation

Packing for your surf-and-sand vacation is as stress-free as a day at the beach, thanks to this easy reference guide to your essentials for a week..

Make packing for your next beach vacation a breeze with this checklist of essentials.

Designed by Ellie See

After a long winter, the anticipation of your first beach vacation of the year is likely akin to the same giddy excitement you felt as a kid during the countdown to the last day of school. But, alas, you’re an adult now and can’t rely on your parents to pack your pool floaties for you anymore.

If you’re staying at a resort , it’s safe to assume you won’t have to pack essentials like beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels. But if you’re lucky enough to snag coveted reservations at an Airbnb beach house this spring break or later this summer, double-check with your host to see what amenities they include. To make sure you don’t show up unprepared—or overpack —use this beach vacation packing list to guarantee you have everything you need for a weeklong trip.

Beach Vacation Packing List

Tip: Download or save this beach vacation checklist to use for your next beach trip.

Beach clothing

Avoid overpacking with this easy formula Wendy Mak, author of The Capsule Wardrobe: 1,000 Outfits From 30 Pieces , uses when she travels: Simply multiply the number of tops with the number of bottoms you plan to bring and that’s the number of outfits you’ll be able to create (as long as each top coordinates with each bottom) .

“As a general rule of thumb, if I’m going away for a seven-night beach holiday, I’d pack two to three pieces of swimwear (so that they have time to dry in between), a pair of shorts and a couple of skirts, four tops that match all my shorts and skirts, and a dress in case I go somewhere special,” Mak told AFAR in 2017 . In addition to the swimwear, this eight-piece wardrobe will give you at least 13 outfits for when you’re not lounging on the beach in your suit.

If you plan to exercise, don’t forget your workout gear and sneakers. And even though it could be warm during the day, check the weather and pack extra layers to keep you comfortable at night in case the weather dips after the sun goes down. You wouldn’t want to miss the beach bonfire, would you?

Clothing to pack:

  • 2–3 swimsuits (We like Summersalt suits , $45–$125, which are made with recycled polyamide fabric and include sizes 0 to 24.)
  • 1–2 swim cover-ups
  • Rashguard for additional sun protection in the water
  • Polarized sunglasses, like the Maho Positano shades ($195), which include subtle yet effective grips on the ears so you don’t have to worry about them falling off your face in the water.
  • Sun hat (the wider the brim the better)
  • Four T-shirts or casual tops
  • Three pairs of shorts or skirts
  • Pants for evenings
  • Sweatshirt or light sweater for evenings
  • Nicer outfit (dress or button-up and slacks) for dinners out
  • Socks and underwear
  • Small purse or belt bag
  • Workout gear and running shoes
  • Flat sandals for daytime, like Nisolo’s woven huaraches, which come in both men’s and women’s sizes ($138–$150) and are made with Leather Working Group Certified leather that’s also water-resistant
  • Flip-flops or other rubber beach sandals ( Indosole makes rubber sandals, $26–$60, crafted from recycled tires, for men, women, children, and toddlers.)
  • Nicer shoes for evenings out (Espadrilles like the Soludos classic wedges , $115, elevate your look but are still lightweight and let your feet breathe in warm climates.)
  • Water shoes to protect your feet from rocks and coral

Before you pack, check the amenities your hotel or vacation rental includes. Most provide beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels you can use during your stay. Otherwise, you’ll want to stick to the essentials for keeping you and your family entertained, hydrated, and comfortable during a day on the sand.

  • Waterproof portable speaker, like the JBL Clip 3 ($50), with a built-in carabiner clip
  • Beach blanket
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Insulated travel mug (As more resorts ban single-use cups , we like keeping our rum punch cold on the beach in a reusable Yeti 20 oz. Rambler , $35.)
  • Reusable utensils
  • Beach games and sand toys
  • Books, magazines, or e-reader
  • Dry bags, like Osprey’s Ultralight dry sacks (from $18), which come in various sizes and can be used to keep valuables safe from water or to separate your wet clothes from everything else in your bag
  • Power bank and charging cords
  • Anti-theft beach bag or lock box

In case your accommodations don’t provide them, pack these items:

  • Beach chairs
  • Beach umbrella or tent
  • Beach towels (We like the Nomadix Original Towel , $40; its ultralight and quick-drying micro-terry fabric is made from post-consumer recycled materials.)

You may also want:

  • Snorkel gear (Tour operators may provide them, but if you’re a germaphobe, you may want to BYO for peace of mind.)
  • Underwater camera, like the GoPro Hero12 Black ($350), which is waterproof down to 33 feet and comes with accessories like a floating hand grip if you purchase it in a bundle directly from GoPro
  • Inflatable floats for lounging in the water
  • Toddler swim floaties for families traveling with small children
  • Swim diapers for babies

Beach toiletries and hygiene items

In addition to the basics you pack every time you travel—toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, razors, etc.—you should pack toiletries to protect you from the sun and any germs you encounter at the beach. Choose a sunscreen that is SPF 30 or greater, water resistant, and broad spectrum so you’re protected against both UVB and UVA rays.

You’ll also want to use a reef-friendly formula that doesn’t use oxybenzone and octinoxate, two ingredients that are banned from being sold in destinations like Hawai‘i and Key West. To calculate the amount of sunscreen you’ll need for your beach trip, the American Academy of Dermatology Association says most adults need about one ounce to cover their body and recommends reapplying every two hours or after swimming.

Toiletries:

  • SPF lip balm
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Wet wipes for disinfecting your hands and getting all the sand off them before you eat
  • After-sun lotion
  • Bug spray for evenings ( Kinfield’s Golden Hour mosquito repellent , $22, is DEET free and works. Its mix of citronella, lemongrass, and clove smells amazing.)
  • First-aid kit, like the Welly Human Repair Kit ($10), which includes adhesive bandages, ointments, hand sanitizers, and more in a refillable tin

After-sun leave-in hair conditioner, like Sun Bum’s Revitalizing 3-in-1 Leave-In Treatment ($13), which detangles, conditions, and protects hair from the damaging effects of the sun and salt water.

Movies under the stars, trapeze lessons, windsurfing — with cool activities like these, kids will never want to leave this newish resort in the lush, away-from-it-all part of the island. Supervised clubs for babies through teens keep the good times rolling while you’re at the adults-only Zen pool or doing treetop yoga. (Yes, that’s a thing.) Solar panels, recycling, plastic-free water bottles and other sustainable initiatives are part of the eco-minded resort culture.

Beaches Negril Resort & Spa, Negril, Jamaica

While this all-inclusive resort and 2024 Family Travel Award-winner caters to all ages, toddlers and preschoolers will be star-struck. Sesame Street characters entertain them with story times, dance parties and even puppet-making! That’s on top of the mini water slides, splash areas and a playground that makes little ones squeal with glee and wears them out, so they’ll hit the sack early.

Private childcare and supervised kids’ clubs (for babies through teens, including those with special needs) are an option when you want a spa treatment, a quiet dinner or just to read a book on the resort's idyllic 7-Mile Beach. All the rooms and suites got a glow-up in 2020, plus there are new villas with butler service (sign us up!)

With these worries aside, you can concentrate on the beauty of the surroundings (the resort is surrounded by a lush mangrove forest) and incredible bucket-list activities, like kids’ carnivals and night kayaking. All the rooms have received a glow-up and there's a sleek new beach club to boot.

Rock House Resort, Turks & Caicos

Your family may never leave the water at this Mediterranean-inspired oasis , which opened in May 2022. In addition to a full kitchen and roomy living room, many of the villa-style accommodations feature a spacious private pool. (Yes way!) And if your crew ever tires of it, fun awaits at the resort’s oceanfront infinity pool and stretch of white sand beach, which is exclusively for resort guests. Just note that while a cliffside setting makes the resort incredibly picturesque, it’s impossible to navigate with a stroller — so bring the tweens, teens and even grandparents if they don’t have trouble climbing stairs.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Aruba Resort

Lakes, lighthouses and hiking trails make New England a great place to visit in almost any season.

Quisisana Resort, Lovell, ME

two friends frolic in a lake at the quisisana resort, a good housekeeping pick for family vacation destinations

Kids will get a digital detox at this all-inclusive lakefront resort , but they’ll be too busy playing to miss their devices. Without TV or a Wi-Fi signal in the comfortable, air-conditioned rooms and cabins, they’ll be fully immersed in the slew of included activities — from paddle boating to tennis to sandcastle-building. They might even learn to kayak or catch their first fish.

At night, music fills the resort. Broadway-style shows, held in a new outdoor theater, entertain all generations. There’s something about the fresh air and a choice of lollipops that keeps most kids from getting too wiggly, and the caliber of the performances is at least on par with good community theater.

The three included daily meals — with menu items like lobster rolls and Maine blueberry pie — will leave your crew’s bellies happy and full. And if you do need Wi-Fi occasionally, you can pop in the main lobby for a signal. Shh: The kids will be fine without it.

Hidden Pond, Kennebunkport, ME

Yoga sessions in the garden, a shed filled with arts and crafts supplies for kids, guided nature walks and outdoor art classes are easy-going yet exciting at the same time. Cottages with fireplaces foster togetherness, and complimentary breakfast arrives at your door every morning so there's no need to rush out for coffee.

Smugglers' Notch Resort, Jeffersonville, VT

Nestled in the Green Mountains, this resort is just as fun in the summer months as it is during prime ski season. Besides eight heated pools (some with waterslides!), the action-packed lineup of family activities has plenty to do whether you’re traveling with a toddler, teen or both. Sing-a-longs, magic shows and scavenger hunts keep little ones entertained while older kids will welcome the chance to take a guided hike, design and launch a water rocket or play glow-in-the-dark volleyball. A GH 2024 Family Travel Awards winner, condos at this property accommodate up to five bedrooms, making it possible for extended family and friends to stay together.

Ocean Edge Resort and Golf Club, Brewster, MA

Beach, pool, eat, repeat — that’s how your crew will spend laid-back days at this Cape Cod gem . The private beach has gentle surf and at low tide, kids can spy little sea creatures in the tide pools. When the tide changes, head to the heated outdoor or indoor pools. Outdoor movies are the perfect wind-down to bedtime. And if you can pry the kids out of the water, activities like scavenger hunts, curated by the resort’s new director of fun (for real!) await. Just make sure to stay in the “mansion” section of the resort because that’s the part with private beach access.

Sebasco Harbor Resort, Phippsburg, ME

Kids will never forget sleeping in a lighthouse next to the ocean. The resort’s 1945 lighthouse contains recently renovated guest rooms with amazing views, sea breezes and conveniences like a fridge and microwave. The lighthouse rooms are also near the resort’s iconic oceanfront saltwater pool, which recently got a makeover. A vintage bowling alley, weekly pirate cruise and old-school kids’ club add to the New England charm.

A game room, fire pits for s'mores roasting and a pool make hanging at the lodge a nice respite in between nature activities.

Los Angeles, CA

Tweens and teens won’t roll their eyes if you suggest a vacay in L.A. — where, trust us, they’ll ask you to eat at In-N-Out-Burger (look cool and say you already had it on the list). Some more must-dos: Visit the Griffith Observatory for the out-of-this-world exhibits and a stellar view of the Hollywood sign, and if you're an outdoorsy family you can hike down from the observatory to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and famous TCL Chinese Theaters .

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures , where anyone 17 and under gets in free, is conveniently located near the classic La Brea Tar Pits and the cool LACMA ( Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Some outdoor shopping at The Grove L.A. and a beach day in Santa Monica with a spin on the iconic wheel at the Santa Monica Pier will get you more well-deserved parent cred. Or, you can take a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood , where, for now, you can find the only Super Nintendo World open in the United States. Stay at The Garland in North Hollywood, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Awards winner. It has a swanky trolley that transports guests to and from Universal, as well as other kid perks like dive-in movies and a retro-chic family suite with bunk beds.

San Diego, CA

Can’t decide between heading to the beach or exploring a big city? San Diego has the best of both worlds, with near-perfect weather to boot. Make your home base a beach resort like the Kona Kai San Diego Resort & Spa , San Diego Mission Bay Resort or, if you're bringing a big group, Shore House at Del, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award winner. Intersperse oceanside fun with short drives to the city’s famous zoo and museums in Balboa Park. Plan to spend at least a half day at Liberty Station , a cultural attraction that has many places to eat and shop. New stores and restaurants are open at Seaport Village , which has a classic carousel for kids to ride.

Monterey, CA

The number one reason to book a vacation in this coastal town: the aquarium. Yes, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is that good. It levels up the typical touch tank experience by letting little kids crawl through tunnels surrounded by tropical fish displays and use squirt toys to learn how animals stand up to big waves. There’s even a padded zone with eye-level exhibits for toddlers! And the whole family will be wowed by the aquarium’s newish exhibition, "Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean." Some of the creatures in the 21 live exhibit areas are newly discovered and haven’t even been named yet. Mind blown! Stay at the hotel next door, InterContinental The Clement Monterey .

Disneyland Resort and California Adventure, Anaheim, CA

the ferris wheel at disneyland california adventure disneyland is a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

If you're looking for a Disney trip with young kids, Disneyland may have the edge over an Orlando vacay. Here are some reasons why: You can get on more rides without as much walking in California, so that means fewer tired and cranky kids. Summer weather is also usually better in Anaheim than in hot-and-humid Florida. And rides like Radiator Springs Racers, which looks like it’s right out of the movie Cars , are Cali-exclusive. The new Villas at Disneyland Hotel offer options that sleep up to 12 guests plus the decor is whimsical.

10 family-friendly winter weekend getaways in the US

W hen I'm looking for a surefire way to beat the post-holiday blues, I plan a winter weekend getaway for the family. With a couple of long weekends on the calendar in the first quarter of the year, plus the ability to create your own whenever works for you, winter is an ideal time to get a fun trip on the schedule.

Whether you want to play in the snow or escape the cold for a balmier location, there’s a winter weekend trip within an easy drive or flight from where you live. Here are 10 of my favorite ideas for a memorable and fun-filled, family-friendly long weekend trip.

WHERE TO GO: 25 best family vacation spots in the U.S.A.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

1. Nashville, Tennessee

I took my teenage daughter on a winter getaway to Nashville, and it was a perfect destination for a not-too-cold long weekend. Each morning began with our own DIY coffee shop-boutique hotel tour, starting the day with breakfast, a cup of coffee, and a stroll through the lobbies at the Fairlane Hotel, Bobby Hotel, and Noelle Nashville.

BEST TRIP EVER: 50 best family vacation ideas for all ages

Then we set off on foot (and one day by trolley) to experience Music City at spots like the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Ryman Auditorium, and the highly impressive and interactive National Museum of African American Music.

Food’s a big draw here, and we tried as much as we could by taking a food tour with Walk Eat Nashville and eating at Assembly Food Hall, which offers food and drink from more than 30 mostly local eateries and bars.

Where to Stay in Nashville: The Countrypolitan Nashville is a stylish and well-situated home base for exploring downtown Nashville, and you just might hear the next big thing performing at the hotel’s restaurant in the evening.

2. Crystal River, Florida

Winter is an ideal time to visit this city on the west coast of Florida, about an hour north of Tampa and less than two hours west of Orlando. That’s because winter is known as Manatee Season. Between November and March, hundreds of West Indian manatees head to the warmer spring-fed waters in these parts once the water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico drops.

OCEANSIDE FUN: 10 best family beach resorts in Florida

The “Manatee Capital of the World” is the only place in the U.S. where you can legally observe manatees while swimming alongside them (accompanied by local guides who make sure everyone behaves properly).

If you don’t want to get in the water, you can spot the gentle creatures on a boat tour or at places like Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge , the only refuge in the U.S. specifically created to protect habitats for manatees.

Where to Stay in Crystal River: There's nothing particularly fancy about the King's Bay Lodge , but its roomy suites sleep four comfortably, its spring-fed pool is a kid favorite, and its proximity to everything you'd want to do in Crystal River is unbeatable.

3. Long Beach Peninsula, Washington

Want to make a dramatic getaway? Head to Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula during the winter. Not far from Portland or Seattle, the area rates as a great place for storm watching during winter, thanks to the combination of seasonal king tides, stormy weather at this time of year, and the rushing water from the Columbia River.

COAST TO COAST: 7 charming coastal towns in the U.S. perfect for a family vacation

Bring your camera to capture the moody scenery, and take it with you when you wander the area’s seven state parks and five wildlife/conservation areas, where you might spot loons, chickadees, sparrows, and hawks during the colder months.

The region also sits along the state’s Cranberry Coast, and the Pacific Coast Cranberry Research Foundation Museum offers a self-guided tour of its cranberry bogs year-round. Winter is also a great time for oysters on the Long Beach Peninsula, which you can enjoy at restaurants like Shoalwater Seafood and The Depot.

Where to Stay on Long Beach Peninsula: Book a room at the pet-friendly Oceanview Inn at the Arch and you’ll be within walking distance of the beach and downtown Long Beach and well situated for enjoying all that the area has to offer.

4. Montgomery, Alabama

With winter weather that’s typically on the mild side, Montgomery offers a long weekend escape with lots of options. Outdoor fun can be found at spots like the Alabama Safari Park, Montgomery Zoo, and the Lagoon Park Trail.

GO SOMEWHERE WARM: 10 tropical destinations you can visit without a US passport

This is an amazing place for the family to learn about the city’s important role in Black history and the American Civil Rights Movement at sites like The Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice, Civil Rights Memorial Center, and Freedom Rides Museum . Annual events on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day include a parade down historic Dexter Avenue, where you can find the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church where King led the congregation from 1954 to 1960.

Refuel along the way at Chris’ Famous Hotdogs, where everyone from Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dr. King to Elvis Presley has eaten.

Where to Stay in Montgomery: Occupying a century-old building, the newish SpringHill Suites Montgomery Downtown offers suites well-suited for family getaways and a downtown location that makes it easy to explore the city.

5. Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

This northwest Idaho city not far from Spokane, Washington, boasts 109 miles of lake shoreline and snowy scenic vistas during the winter. Take a Scenic Hot Cocoa Cruise with Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises, and you might spot bald eagles swooping overhead while sipping your sweet treat (they congregate around Lake Coeur d’Alene every year from November through February).

SUN AND SAND: 12 best beach resorts in the U.S. for families

Three ski resorts located within an hour of Coeur d’Alene are an easy day trip from town and offer trails and terrain for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, while Raptor Reef Indoor Water Park provides thrills of a different kind. An annual mac and cheese festival takes place in January, serving up comfort food just right for the season, and the Winter Lights outdoor art experience illuminates downtown Coeur d’Alene every evening from January 26 through February 4.

Where to Stay: Set on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene, Coeur d’Alene Resort offers spacious rooms and suites (many with amazing views) plus amenities like a spa, fitness center, and indoor pool.

6. San Luis Obispo, California

Located between San Francisco and Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo (or SLO, pronounced "slow," as it’s known) offers a weekend getaway with a sustainable side. Many of its wineries are SIP-certified (sustainable in practice), and the city even uses herds of goats to clear out brush along its hillsides. Check out the area’s natural beauty while pedaling the city’s bike trails, hiking at spots like Irish Hills Natural Reserve and Reservoir Canyon, or strolling the area’s beaches.

WORLD’S BEST: 10 best all-inclusive beach resorts in the world

Head downtown for shops and restaurants, catch a flick at the Palm Theatre (the first solar-powered theater in the U.S.), and taste local produce and foods at the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market that takes place every Thursday. And the kids will get a kick out of adding their own contribution to the quirky Bubblegum Alley.

Where to Stay in SLO: Tweens and teens will love the retro-modern, collegiate vibes and the on-site burger joint at The Wayfarer San Luis Obispo , located near the campus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

7. Scottsdale, Arizona

Plan your escape to Scottsdale, where the sun is shining almost every day of the year and winter temperatures tend to be in the 60s and 70s. That means the weather is ideal for strolling through Old Town Scottsdale, exploring the Sonoran Desert at places like McDowell Sonoran Preserve and Pinnacle Peak Park, and frolicking at the kids’ splash pad and play area at the recently revitalized Scottsdale Civic Center.

GO WEST: 7 West Coast vacations with something for everyone in the family

There’s always an interesting exhibit or programming to enjoy at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, and the kids will appreciate riding the train and carousel at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park and enjoying something sweet at the 1950s-era Sugar Bowl Ice Cream Parlor & Restaurant.

Where to Stay in Scottsdale: The kids will be fans of the Sonoran Splash pool at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess , which features two waterslides and a zero-entry; the grownups will enjoy making use of the kids' club to hit the links or squeeze in a spa treatment.

8. Boston, Massachusetts

Bundle up and spend a winter weekend wandering around Boston, which is road trip distance from much of the Northeast. It’s an ideal time of year to visit the city’s many excellent museums, like the Boston Children’s Museum, Museum of Science, and Museum of Fine Arts art museum. Glide around the Frog Pond Ice Skating Rink or sled down Flagstaff Hill at Boston Common (the oldest public park in the United States), then warm up over a plate of pasta in the city’s North End.

Hello, caracker23

The traffic depends on the day you are arriving. If is it the weekend, you will have no problem getting to the city center in 50 minutes, however during the week it is a nightmare. Last time we came back from vacations we spent 2 hours getting from Domodedovo to the centre. But since you’re landing at 9 am, and will certainly spend some time at the customs and waiting for the luggage, it could be more or less all right with the traffic, because the majority of working people are already in the offices. I would give it a shot. Just be sure you take a legal taxi in the airport and not the private drivers. You’ll get the agreed price and no surprises.

The long way home - Prologue - 17500 km overland to reach my hometown!

Photo of Yubanaswa Chakraborty

On the 14th day of our travel, we were looking out of our train window and enjoying the view of the semi frozen lake Baikal. We were on a day long journey on a slow Russian passenger train. Everything moved backwards towards the west, slowly. Pine trees, snow on the ground. The towering snow clad peaks behind them.

We had come about 8300 km since we started. A little over half the distance we were covering. This is not my usual route to go home. This is not the usual route people travel from Europe to India. But this is one of the most feasible overland route to complete this journey. Although very few actually travel this way. Our inn keeper in the town of Listvyanka by the shores of lake Baikal told us - "The last Indian tourist I saw here was about five years ago"

Ever since I moved to London, I have been toying with the idea to travel overland to India, by means of public transport - i.e. trains and road transport. After years of waiting, I finally got myself to travel.

In April-May, me and my wife Beena, traveled from London to Siliguri (India), mainly by trains.

Although we had crossed over from Europe to Asia long way back near the town of Yekaterinburg, the real Asia doesn't start until you cross the deepest lake of the world.

Moscow: A Spanish triumph long overdue

by Yavor Dimitrov | Jun 3, 2015

bvb wt2015 moscow 1

One of the world’s most consistent tandems, the Spaniards Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira, had to wait until the Moscow Grand Slam this past weekend to be in possession of their first World Tour gold together. They did so at one of the most interesting and balanced Grand Slams ever.

To be statistically precise, Pablo Herrera, one of the international beach volleyball legends, not only in Europe, had already won two World Tour gold medals but with different partners. The 32-year-old defensive specialist grabbed the title at the Norwegian Kristiansand Open in 2008 with his former teammate Raul Mesa (with whom he also dominated at the 2002 Junior World Championship in Catania, Italy) and at the Chinese Lianyungang Open back in 2004 with Javier Bosma. European champions from 2013, Herrera and Gavira finally won a World Tour event which ended the team’s drought ever since they started their partnership in 2009. A series of great results saw the Spanish duo finish with silver and bronze medals on a number of occasions over the years and now they added the most valuable accolade, alongside their awards from Klagenfurt on the European stage from two years ago, to their medals room. In fact, the Russian capital seems to be a lucky place for the 2004 Olympic silver medalist Pablo Herrera because it was there in 2005 when he and the aforementioned Raul Mesa were crowned European champions for the first time in Spanish beach volleyball history.

In a 43-minute finale on the center court at the Vodny Stadium Beach Sports Center, the 12th-seeded Herrera-Gavira posted a 2-0 (21-19, 21-19) win over the 10th-seeded Brazilians Pedro-Evandro in the first big tournament of the season. The title is also third for Europe in as many World Tour events in 2015, following the success of the Germans Böckermann-Flüggen at the Fuzhou Open and the Italians Ranghieri-Caminati at the Lucerne Open.

bvb wt2015 moscow 2

Patience and concentration were mostly the factors that sent the title in Spanish hands. Their Brazilian opponents in the final on Sunday are enjoying their first only season together on the international circuit. Pedro Salgado and the giant Evandro Goncalves, standing at 210 cm, paired up at the end of 2014 for the domestic Brazilian Circuito Banco do Brasil beach volleyball championship and have scored an impressive run of victories ever since. Their win at the pre-season Brazil vs. USA friendly tournament on the Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro foreshadowed their good shape at the beginning of 2015. On the way to the final on Sunday Pedro-Evandro eliminated two fellow Brazilian teams. Ricardo-Emanuel and Alison-Bruno were knocked out consecutively in the quarterfinals and the semifinals respectively. A little more was needed, however, for Pedro-Evandro to seize the first Grand Slam and to cease the current European dominance.

The bronze medal encounter turned out to be another successful affair for Europe. Germany’ top team, Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik, defeated Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt in straight sets (21-19, 21-17). Thus, the Germans repeated their finish from last year’s first Grand Slam in Shanghai. Erdmann-Matysik are also reigning World Championship bronze medalists and are eager to improve their Stare Jablonki’s record from 2013.

Spectators and beach volleyball enthusiasts could be delighted with the level of display in Moscow. A lot of games offered drama and great rallies, most sets ended with two-point margins. The week did not go without surprises either. The 1st-seeded Dalhausser-Rosenthal from USA were stunned in the opener by the teenage Russians Stoyanovskiy-Yarzutkin. A second defeat later on against Walkenhorst-Windscheif from Germany left the Americans on the bottom of the preliminary Pool A and hence left them out of the competition after only three games. Identical was the fate of the Moscow Grand Slam defending champions, the home heroes Semenov-Krasilnikov. The 8th-seeded Russians beat Fane-Jackson from Venezuela on the opening day, but who could have imagined that it was going to be their last celebration. Defeats to Mexico’s Virgen-Ontiveros and the eventual bronze medalists Erdmann-Matysik ended the Russian hopes of another glorious event.

The first of the Grand Slams has already finished and now the attention moves to this week’s first-ever Swatch Major event in the Croatian coastal city of Porec. Stavanger in Norway (next week) and the Swiss Alpine Gstaad (in the middle of July) are the remaining two events of the inaugural Major series.
