Trek Finally Launches E-Bike Version Of Popular Marlin MTB

Trek is one of the biggest and most popular bicycle brands in the world, and for good reason. For decades, the brand has somehow managed to cater to all disciplines of cycling, while producing bikes that fit most people’s budgets. Out of all the bikes in Trek’s model range, the Marlin is by far the best-selling model, simply because of its versatility.

Sure, it’s a simple hardtail mountain bike, but that’s also why it’s so popular. Avid cyclists would know that a hardtail mountain bike is among the most versatile two-wheelers out there. Want to ride cross-country? No problem. Looking to hit a bunch of technical single tracks on your way home? A hardtail is more than up to the task. Looking for a ride to work or school every day? A hardtail fits the bill perfectly.

Trek Finally Launches E-Bike Version Of Popular Marlin MTB

That said, the Trek Marlin is one of the best all-rounders out there because of its affordability and impressive features. Given the popularity of this bike, it’s hard to believe that Trek has thought of launching it as an e-bike just now. Well, as they say, better late than never, right? So let’s dive right in and take a closer look at the new Marlin+ e-bike.

Just like its unassisted counterpart, the Marlin+ is built around an aluminum frame, and is offered in multiple builds. On the performance side of the equation, the Marlin+ is powered by a Bosch motor, although it isn’t the acclaimed Performance Line CX motor, but rather, the more beginner-friendly Active Line Plus mid-drive unit.

The motor delivers a modest 50 Newton-meters of torque, and is compatible with the Bosch e-Bike Flow app, allowing you to configure settings with ease. Battery tech -wise, we find a 400-watt-hour battery pack which is pretty small. Nevertheless, it’s compatible with the Bosch 250Wh PowerMore range extender. Allowing you to keep tabs on performance and battery status, the Bosch Purion 200 display is mounted neatly on the bike’s handlebars.

Up front, the Trek Marlin+ receives a 120-millimeter suspension fork allowing for moderate to intermediate cross country terrain. The wheels are mounted to the frame and fork with a thru-axle system, so it’s clear that this bike is a more premium model when compared to other entry-level e-MTBs. Trek offers the new bike in either 27.5-inch or 29-inch wheel setups, with both versions sporting wide 2.6-inch tires.

Just like the non-electric Marlin, the Marlin+ gets a versatile frame that’s meant to accommodate a wide selection of accessories. From luggage racks to full-coverage fenders, you can deck out the Marlin+ any way you please to suit your needs and preferences. As for pricing and availability, the Marlin+6 is priced at £2,500 ($3,093 USD) on Trek’s UK website. The more premium Marlin+8 is priced higher at £3,000 ($3,712 USD). US availability and pricing has yet to be confirmed as of this writing.

New Trek Marlin+ Is A Versatile E-MTB That Won’t Break The Bank

It follows the ethos of its non-electric sibling, rocking components from shimano and bosch..

New Trek Marlin+ Is A Versatile E-MTB That Won’t Break The Bank

Trek is regarded as one of the most respected bicycle brands the world has ever seen. Since its inception in 1976, Trek has pretty much set the standard across all categories of cycling, and even today, continues to be a driver of innovation in the rapidly growing e-bike segment . Recent years have ushered in lots of new electric bicycles, and for 2024, Trek is going back to basics with the Marlin+ electric mountain bike.

The Trek Marlin has long been a staple in Trek’s model range. Regarded as a jack of all trades in the MTB world, the Marlin appeals to both novice and advanced riders thanks to its versatility and approachability. When it comes to the electric MTB world, Trek has some heavy hitters such as the Trek Fuel EXe 9.5 carbon fiber electric enduro bike. With the Marlin+, Trek hopes to lower the barriers to entry in terms of price and performance, all while providing cyclists with a dependable two-wheeler with trusted Trek quality.

New Trek Marlin+ Is A Versatile E-MTB That Won’t Break The Bank

The Trek Marlin+ promises reliable tech at an affordable price tag.

The Trek Marlin+’s simple construction is worth more than the sum of its parts. Starting south of $3,000, it’s capable of going pretty much anywhere other fancy electric mountain bikes worth three or four times are capable of going. It certainly serves as the perfect gateway drug for a cyclist looking to get into e-bikes, as it’s packing components from some of the most trusted OEMs in the business. For starters, it’s powered by a mid-drive motor from Bosch, more specifically, the 250-watt Active Line Plus.

In Case You Missed It:

touratech soft luggage r1300gs

With 50 Nm (about 37 pound-feet) of torque, the Marlin+ isn’t as potent as other e-bikes powered by the more premium Performance Line CX with 85 Nm (63 pound-feet). It does, however, make up for it with an impressive amount of tech for a natural-feeling pedal assist. Trek bakes in an interesting feature called Auto Mode, wherein the motor provides adaptive pedal assistance based on the rider’s pace. This means that riders need not manually adjust the assist level, and simply crank on the pedals harder to let the motor know they want to go faster.

The Marlin+, like the regular Marlin, is all about versatility.

The entire affair is powered by a compact 400-watt-hour battery housed within the bike’s frame. Its slender proportions keep the Marlin’s signature clean hardtail look, making it easy to miss the fact that this is actually an e-bike. Trek claims an estimated ride time of two to four hours, while an optional 250-watt-hour range-extender can increase ride time by up to 50 percent.

Depending on the trim level of your choice, the Trek Marlin+ is fitted with premium component such as hydraulic disc brakes, a front suspension fork with up to 120 millimeters of travel, and a Shimano drivetrain with either a Cues for the Marlin+ 6 or a Deore for the Marlin+ 8. Like the non-electric Marlin, accessibility and affordability lie at the core of the Marlin+, as such, it retails for just $2,699 USD for the Marlin+ 6 and $3,499 USD for the more premium Marlin+ 8. The new e-bikes, as well as the rest of Trek’s electric and non-electric bikes are available online via their official website, or at your local Trek dealer.

The Marlin+ gets an in-frame battery pack that's compact yet capable.

Shimano components ensure dependable performance both on and off-road.

Trek's best-selling budget mountain bike gets an e-MTB boost

Trek takes its most popular mountain bike - the Marlin - and equips it with a Bosch e-MTB motor and 400w battery to create the Marlin+

Trek Marlin+ bike

Trek has taken the Marlin, one of its most popular mountain bikes, and fitted it with an e-MTB motor to create the Marlin+. This new budget e-MTB will come in two versions, both of which are equipped with a Bosch motor suited for riding on and off-road,

The new Trek Marlin+ shares the same updated geometry and features as the Gen 3 Trek Marlin which was updated last year . Where the Marlin+ differs is its mid-drive motor and integrated battery which help give this hardtail electric mountain bike some extra oomph up the hills.

Trek Marlin+ bike

Trek has fitted the Alpha Silver Aluminium Marlin+ frame with a Bosch Active Line Plus motor. Inside the downtube is a 400Wh battery which can offer 2-4 hours of run time on a full charge (depending on conditions, climbing, and modes) which can be extended using Trek's PowerMore 250Wh range extender. The motor is capable of putting out 50Nm of power and is controlled via a 2-in-1 remote and display to make mode selection and battery status easy.

The Marlin+ comes in five different sizes, the two smallest sizes use 27.5in wheels while M to XL has larger 29in wheels. Geometry is aimed at balancing comfort and trail performance with a 66.5-degree head angle and 74-degree seat angle. Reach is 440mm for a medium and the 485mm chainstays should give the bike a stable ride feel.

On the trail a 120mm suspension fork (100mm on the XS) and 2.6in tires will improve comfort and control while the rack and fender mounts mean it will be equally at home cruising around the city on your daily commute.

FIRST LOOK: TREK MARLIN+ ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN BIKE

Trek goes hook, line, and send'er with an all-new electric hardtail.

trek marlin 9 release date

(TREK PRESS RELEASE)

Today, Trek launched an all-new electric bike that brings its most popular mountain bike to a power-backed platform. The new Marlin+ builds on the fan-favorite Marlin and equips the do-anything hardtail with an intuitive Bosch motor that gives riders a comfortable, quiet boost everywhere from singletrack to city streets. It manages to do all this while still coming in at a lower price point for Trek electric mountain bikes, so riders can enjoy the best of both Trek and Bosch.

Marlin+ rolls ahead with all the versatility of its non-electric sibling, like a capable hardtail frame that’s equipped with a 120mm fork for flattening rocks and roots, plus front and rear thru-axles that keep handling precise. Wide, 2.6” tires give it plenty of grip, and Marlin+ comes ready to ride with smart wheel sizing. Frame sizes medium and up get fast-rolling 29˝ wheels and small and extra-small models feature size-appropriate, nimble 27.5˝ wheels.

At the center of Marlin+ is Bosch’s new Active Line Plus mid-drive motor. The Active Line Plus delivers 50Nm of torque for a quiet ride with smooth support, giving riders the boost they crave without feeling overwhelming. The motor is supported by a fully encased 400Wh Bosch CompactTube battery that optimizes energy density for a smaller, lighter package.

trek marlin 9 release date

The 400Wh battery offers up to four hours of supported riding, and riders can add Bosch’s 250Wh PowerMore range extender to get an extra 60% of supported ride time.

Simplicity is at the forefront of every ride on Marlin+ thanks to Bosch’s new Purion 200 display and remote combo. The sleek remote provides essential ride data at a quick glance and skips unnecessary extras. An AUTO mode intuitively adjusts motor support based on terrain, conditions, and rider feedback, so riders can spend more time focusing on the ride ahead and less time worrying about settings.

Just like the non-electric Marlin, Marlin+ gives riders do-anything capability with mounts for a rack, fenders, and a kickstand. Riders can choose to keep their Marlin+ a true trail bike or add on all the bells and whistles for the ultimate all-terrain commuter.

Trek’s all-new Marlin+ is available at select Trek retailers around the globe and online at trekbikes.com in select markets.

Trek Introduces Marlin+, an Affordable eMTB Series

trek marlin 9 release date

Trek offers the Marlin+ in two different builds, the Marlin+ 8 and the Marlin+ 6. These are hardtail eMTBs equipped with Bosch Active Line Plus mid-drive motors and 400Wh Bosch CompactTube batteries . Both e-bikes use 27.5-in. wheels for the XS and small sizes and 29-in. wheels for the medium, large and XL sizes. The XS is equipped with a 100mm-travel fork, while the small, medium, large and XL sizes all receive a 120mm-travel fork.

The Bosch Active Line Plus motors are rated at 250W and produce up to 50Nm of torque. The choice to go with a Bosch is a bit of a surprise; we don’t often see their motors spec’d in this price range, and that detail alone makes the launch of these eMTBs very exciting. In our experience, the Bosch motors are the gold standard for eMTB performance.

And because offroad terrain can vary so much, rather than list a mileage estimate, they suggest that riders will enjoy two to four hours per charge. Riders wanting greater range can purchase Bosch’s PowerMore range-extending battery. These are Class 1 eMTBs, legal to ride anywhere e-bikes are permitted.

With five sizes to choose from, Trek says that the Marlin+ will fit riders from 4 feet 9 inches up to 6 feet 5 inches.

Marlin+ 8

The Marlin+ 8 features a 12-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain, 4-piston Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, 203mm rotors and a dropper post. It comes set up for tubeless riding complete with sealant. The Marlin+ 8 retails for around $3500.

trek marlin 9 release date

The Marlin+ 6 features a 9-speed Shimano drivetrain, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, 203mm rotors and an alloy seatpost. The Marlin+ 6 retails for less than $3000.

The Marlin+ is available on Trek’s website and should be in Trek stores later this month.

Trek Marlin 6 review

Smooth start turns shockingly bruising in the rough

Russell Burton

Guy Kesteven

Size-specific wheels, range of paint jobs available

Punishingly stiff frame and handlebars, undamped fork, some poor finishing kit

trek marlin 9 release date

Trek is one of the world’s largest and most successful bike makers, but its entry-level mountain machine offers something of a bruising introduction to the global superstar brand.

Multiple choice

If you like a choice of paint jobs, then the Marlin 6 is a refreshing rarity at this bargain-basement price point, in that it offers an alternative (orange) paint option and comes in a class-leading range of sizes. It also switches wheel size depending on frame size with 13.5 and 15 bikes rolling on 27.5in wheels and 17.5 through 23in frames fitted with 29in wheels.

The thinking behind this is that most mountain bikes now use 27.5in wheels for a balance of easy handling and smooth roll, but going 29in on larger sizes can offer a more proportionate, smoother ride.

trek marlin 9 release date

We found the handlebar to be brutally unforgiving

According to this theory, the shallower contact angle of the bigger wheels when they roll into a root or rock on the trail should make for a significantly smoother ride in the rough. The increased wheel weight and smoother roll should also give better speed sustain.

Because 29er wheels don’t intrinsically cost any more to build than 27.5in wheels it’s potentially a great solution for making budget bikes easier and more efficient to ride on more technical terrain.

Unfortunately the relatively small volume – particularly rear – Bontrager treads minimise the smoothness and momentum gains of the Marlin. Despite longer chainstays and a skinny seatpost, which should create more flex, the Alpha alloy rear frame is still a super stiff and inert structure that batters rather than bounces over even slightly rough surfaces.

Add the slow response of the heavier wheels and high overall weight, and the Marlin is something of a slog to get going and then keep going.

Aches and pains

Unfortunately the front end actually compounds the control and comfort problems of the rolling chassis. On mellow trails the softly sprung SR Suntour fork with 85mm of useable travel seems like a pleasantly plush companion.

Initially positive thoughts literally explode in your hands off the first drop or sizeable obstacle though. That’s because the return stroke of the fork is totally undamped and there’s no softening top out bumper either. That means the fork cannons back with a brutal metal-on-metal smash that was loud and violent enough that we genuinely thought it had snapped off the bike going down the first set of steps.

trek marlin 9 release date

Low-volume Bontrager tyres nullify the smoothness and momentum gains of the Marlin

Braking or turning places more stress on the skinny 28mm fork legs, causing them to stick rather than move smoothly. The inch-diameter handlebar is also so unforgiving that we checked it with a magnet in case it was steel rather than alloy. The ergo-shaped grips don’t have locking collars either so they twist and potentially slide off 660mm wide handlebars that are already too narrow to provide enough technical terrain leverage.

While Trek’s concept of appropriate wheel sizing is a basically good idea, the high weight reduces responsiveness to an unacceptable degree. Add those under-width bars, loose grips, undamped suspension and the brutally stiff frame and the Marlin 6 really isn’t a catch – even at this price.

Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 Review: Beginner’s Dream Mountain Bike

trek marlin 6 gen 2 mountain bike

The Trek Marlin 6 2023 is the newest iteration of the entry-level XC hardtail family designed for light trail riding, gravel paths, fire roads, and mixed-terrain commuting.

The 2023 Gen 2 model is the same as the Trek Marlin 6 2022, only with different colors and a new name. Trek overhauled its naming system for the upcoming year, referring to the models by the number of generations there have been. So the latest version of a Trek bike has the highest ‘Gen’ number.

This Trek Marlin 6 review will cover the bike’s main specs and highlights, answer some buyer questions, and provide our verdict on who should buy one.

How Much is the Trek Marlin 6?

Trek Marlin 6 price is $850 and sits in the middle of the price range of the five Marlin models. The cheapest model costs $630, and the most expensive is $1,330. Alongside the 820, the Marlin is Trek’s most affordable mountain bike family.

  • Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain
  • Rack and kickstand mounts
  • Progressive sizing
  • Low-performance coil fork

Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 Full List of Specs

Trek marlin 6 gen 2 full review.

In this section, we will cover the main features of the Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 and what makes it stand out in the sub-$1,000 MTB category.

Marlin 6 Gen 2 in dark red

Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 is available in four modern paint jobs that will suit any type of rider.

What Type of Bike Is a Trek Marlin 6?

The Trek Marlin 6 MTB is a modern-looking cross-country hardtail with a 100mm coil suspension fork, perfect for beginner mountain bikers. Unfortunately, the rudimentary suspension limits the Marlin 6 to relatively mild trails. Nonetheless, it makes an excellent day-to-day bike for commuting, transport, and leisure.

Alpha Silver Aluminum Frame

Trek uses its Alpha Silver aluminum frame for the Marlin 6. Thanks to the company’s consistent design and materials innovations, these frames outperform the similarly-priced competition in compliance and comfort.

Marlin 6 Gen 2 internal cable routing

Internal cable routing means Marlin 6 looks sleek and neat, while it also protects the cables from excessive wear and tear.

The frame has quick-release axles, tidy internal cable routing, and mounts for a rack and kickstand, allowing you to equip the Marlin for commuting or bikepacking. One unusual feature of this bike is the curved top tube on the smaller models (XS, S) that lowers the standover height for a better fit.

Is the Trek Marlin 6 Good for Jumps?

No, the Trek Marlin 6 isn’t good for jumps. Unfortunately, as a cheap hardtail, this bike uses a low-performance coil-spring Suntour XCT 30 fork with 100mm of travel (80mm on XS). This fork performs poorly on bumpy trails but is adequate for day-to-day riding and light off-roading .

Thankfully, the fork has preload and hydraulic lockout settings, but the headtube isn’t tapered, meaning it will be harder to upgrade.

Shimano Deore 10-Speed Drivetrain

The standout feature for us is the Shimano Deore M4100 10-speed drivetrain. The Trek Marlin 6 is one of the only bikes with this hardware at $850 or below. In addition, an 11-46t cassette and 30t chainring provide plenty of gearing for steep gradients.

Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 shimano deore drivetrain

Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain is a standard in this price range across the industry, as it provides plenty of gear range and smooth gear shifting.

Generally, sub-$1,000 mountain bikes have cheaper drivetrains that shift poorly and lose efficiency quickly. However, Deore M4100 is durable and smooth-shifting , and the single chainring makes it easier to maintain.

Tektro Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Another excellent inclusion for a bike of this price is hydraulic disc brakes. Although entry-level, Tektro’s HD-M275 brakeset with 160mm rotors performs well at this price range and for a bike of this spec.

Hydraulic discs allow you to stop safely in wet weather and with plenty of power and reliability in most situations. However, if you plan on tackling advanced trails, neither this bike nor the brakes are adequate.

2.20″ Tires and Progressive Wheel Sizing

The Trek Marlin 6 has Bontrager XR2 Comp tires for handling hardpack trails, gravel paths, and pavement where traction is relatively predictable. These XC-style tires roll fast and provide decent grip but will slip and slide in wet trail conditions.

Marlin 6 Gen 2 wheels and fork

Even though the tires are not tubeless-ready, they are wide enough to provide plenty of traction in varying conditions that come with modern mountain biking.

The XS and Small sizes of this bike have 27.5″ rims, while the others use 29ers. Progressive sizing makes the Marlin fit more consistently across rider heights. Unfortunately, the wheelset and tires are not tubeless-ready.

Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 Sizing Chart

  • XS — 4’9″-5’1″ / 145-155cm
  • S —  5’1″-5’5″ / 155-165cm
  • M —  5’5″-5’8″ / 165-173cm
  • M/L — 5’8″-5’11” / 173-180cm
  • L —  5’11”-6’2″ / 180-188cm
  • XL —  6’2″-6’5″ / 188-195cm
  • 2XL — 6’5″-6’8″ / 195-203cm

Who Is Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 Best Suited For?

The Marlin 6 Trek MTB is best for beginner mountain bikers who want to start learning the skills and techniques of the sport on light trails. In addition, cyclists who want a bike for comfortable day-to-day use, running errands, and mixed-terrain commutes will enjoy the Marlin 6.

Marlin 6 Gen 2

We recommend the Marlin 6 Gen 2 to beginner to early-intermediate mountain bikers who mostly stay on light trails and rough dirt and gravel roads.

Again, this bike is limited by its cheap fork, so if you want a bike to grow into and challenge your mountain biking skills, you may want to check out one of the higher-end Trek MTBs.

Is Marlin 6 Gen 2 a Good Buy?

We think the Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 is a solid choice at just $850. The new-style frame and geometry make it look like the real deal, even if it can’t handle hard riding.

Marlin 6 Gen 2 in black and yellow

Most of the Marlin 6’s components are excellent for the price range, including Shimano’s Deore drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes, durable Bontrager tires, and a quality frame with solid ride characteristics.

Don’t miss out on this excellent deal if you’re looking for a cheap do-it-all bike that’s at home on pavement, light mountain trails, and everything in between.
