Experience the majesty of Iceland with more sailings in and out of Reykjavík than any other cruise line
You’ll quickly fall in love with the majestic landscapes and old-world charm of Iceland. And with the most sailings in and out of Reykjavik of any cruise line, Norwegian’s Iceland Cruise options are plentiful. The country's colourful capital may be hard to pronounce (it's RAKE + YUH + VIK), but its history, culture and natural beauty make it impossible to forget. Visit nearby sites like The Blue Lagoon, the flower-filled lava fields of Thingvellir National Park, and the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall (aka The Golden Waterfall). Sail to Iceland's remote Westfjord region offering everything from hiking to watersports, then continue to Akureyri - the centre of Icelandic folk culture. Along the way, you’ll see fjords and flowers in every direction. Discover greater Northern Europe on your cruise with stops to cities like Amsterdam, Brussels, London, or Paris, and visits to lush sceneries like Norway and Scotland.
About ICELAND CRUISES
Discover The Golden Circle
As one of Norwegian's top Shore Excursions, The Golden Circle is a must-see day trip only 30 miles from Reykjavik. The Circle consists of three sites starting with Thingvellir national park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the mountains. This park is a lava plain filled with wildflowers. The second stop is the spectacular Geysir Geothermal Area – populated by hot springs and other geothermal phenomena. And the final site is the famous Gullfoss waterfall, or The ‘Golden Waterfall’. The Golden Circle is also called The Golden Ring and the journey there is referred to as “Ring Road.”
Discover the Westfjords & Isafjordur
From remote fishing villages to outdoor activities to cascading mountains, Iceland’s Westfjords are one of a kind. Isafjordur , the home of the largest fjord, offers cultural heritage and colourful valleys. Drive through the breathtaking West Fjord mountains, populated by quant farms and villages. Stop in the old shark-fishing town of Flateyri. Don’t miss Skrudur, Iceland’s oldest botanical garden. And embrace the great outdoors – the region is renowned for its excellent hiking, kayaking and birdwatching. Culture, history, maritime life and breathtaking landscapes make this area an unforgettable experience.

Akureyri, Iceland
Nestled along the shores of one of the most breathtaking fjords in Iceland, Akureyri is the nation's second largest urban area and a centre of Icelandic folk culture. Whale watching and waterfalls are just the beginning of the natural wonders available to explore in this charming Icelandic port.

Day 1: WELCOME TO SWEDEN
When you arrive at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, make your way to Stockholm city centre. Many travellers opt to take the express train to Stockholm Central Station, but we also offer direct private transfers. After settling in at your hotel, spend the day exploring the beautiful city. Stroll the well-known street Drottninggatan where you can shop and feel the vibe of the capital city. Go for a walk in the surrounding area of Östermalm , where you will find interesting shops, cafés, and restaurants for a perfect introduction to Scandinavian culture. It could be fun to pick a cafe and experience Swedish „fika“, an afternoon tea or coffee.
Spend the night in Stockholm.
Day 2: THE CHARMS OF SWEDISH CULTURE
Today you will explore the heart of scenic Stockholm . We recommend exploring the capital by foot, Today you will explore the heart of scenic Stockholm. We recommend exploring the capital by foot, visiting attractions such as the Old Town (Gamla Stan) , where you will find the Royal Palace , the parliament, old churces, beautiful cobble stone streets and medieval houses.
After some time at Gamla Stan, you can take a short ferry ride to the nearby island Djurgården , a cultural oasis with something for everyone. Here you will find the kitschy Abba Museum , the Nordic Museum , the Vasa Museum and the Skansen open-air museum. It is ideal to spend the afternoon here, exploring the grounds and many attractions.
Day 3: TRAVEL FROM STOCKHOLM TO LOVELY COPENHAGEN
Today you will take a short flight to Copenhagen . After settling in at your hotel, go for a walk along the enchanting old harbour area of Nyhavn , where you will see colourful houses and lively restaurants among the docked boats. Walk the narrow side streets, visit some shops and try out the traditional Danish open-faced sandwich, Smørrebrød.
Spend the night in Copenhagen.
*For those interested, we offer the option of travelling by train instead of flight between Stockholm and Denmark. For more details click the optional activities.
Day 4: A DAY IN CAPTIVATING COPENHAGEN
You have the whole day to explore Copenhagen . We recommend seeing the city by foot, visiting landmarks like Amalienborg Palace (limited opening hours), Christiansborg Palace ( limited opening hours), and the famous Little Mermaid statue. An optional cruise from the harbour is also highly recommended as you can appreciate the architecture and beauty of the city by water. Next, stroll Ströget street for some shopping and grab something to eat at Torvehallerne food hall.
Day 5: SET SAIL FOR NORWAY
Spend the morning touring Copenhagen. Some interesting attractions include the observatory of The Round Tower , the most famous church in Copenhagen, Church of Our Saviour , as well as the impeccable King’s Garden, and the regal Rosenborg Castle . In the early afternoon, it’s time to board your cruise to Oslo, which sails gently up the Kattegat Sund on its way to Norway’s capital city. You can enjoy dinner in one of the restaurants, check out the entertainment on board or just relax and watch the sunset from the deck.
Spend the night on the cruise.
Day 6: ENJOY ENCHANTING OSLO
After the cruise ship docks, get ready to see the best of Oslo. The city is quite walkable and recommend exploring by foot and the convenience of public transport. Notable attractions include the beautiful Vigeland Sculpture Park and Fram Polar Ship Museum as well as spending some time along the beautiful harbour area.
Other interesting stops include the Munch Museum , Royal Palace , Akershus Fortress , and Oslo City Hall .
Spend the night in Oslo.
Day 7: RAILWAY JOURNEY TO TRONDHEIM
This morning you will head out early to Oslo Central Station to board the half-day (6.5-hour) journey aboard the Dovrebanen train. The train route passes over the Dovre mountain plateau through historic towns and nature preservations and includes great variations in terrain and altitude. The journey concludes with a steep, curvy descent down to the lowlands where Trondheim is located.
Spend the afternoon discovering Trondheim, including Bakklandet , an idyllic neighbourhood full of history and culture, Nidaros Cathedral , as well as other attractions such as the Ringve museum and gardens, Munkholmen and the Old town bridge.
Spend the night in Trondheim.
Day 8: EXPLORING THE COASTLINE OF NORWAY
This morning, you will embark on a cruise that will have you discovering the enchanting wintry beauty of Norway. You will head to the Trondheim harbour to board a Hurtigruten cruise ship for the Norwegian Coastal Voyage. It will then set sail along the Trondheim fjord and past Hitra Island, enjoying views of the icy fjord from the comfort of the ship.
In the evening, the boat will dock at the city of Kristiansund and the town of Molde , lovely under soft winter light. This journey passes through some breathtaking coastal landscapes, and the final port of the day is a brief stop in Ålesund, after midnight.
Spend the night on board Hurtigruten, in a private cabin.
Day 9: SAIL TO HISTORIC BERGEN
During the night, the ship calls at Torvik, Maløy, and Florø as the journey weaves through islets and stunning landscapes before coming within view of its final destination—Bergen. Here you will disembark the ship at 14:30 to enjoy some leisure time. Bergen , “The Capital of the Fjords”, has all the charms of a small town. Here you’ll find Bryggen , a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with remarkably preserved old houses, a lively fish and flower market, cable cars offering stunning views, great museums and more. We recommend riding the Fløibanen Funicular to Mount Fløyen to enjoy the panoramic view of the city. Bergen is surrounded by 7 mountains so a good place for hiking.
Spend the night in Bergen.
Day 10: NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL BY LAND AND SEA
Today will be an especially scenic day with a lot of travel. From Bergen, the early Bergensbanen train transports you to Voss, followed by bus to Gudvangen.
There, you will embark on a scenic 2-hour fjord cruise to Flåm , including a trip through Nærøyfjord , the narrowest fjord in all of Europe. This UNESCO World Heritage site is perhaps the most breathtaking part of Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, with its mighty peaks, tumbling waterfalls, and small farms dotting the mountainsides. Finally, the boat sails up Aurlandsfjord to Flåm, a charming village, where you will spend the evening.
Spend the night in Flåm.
We recommend booking luggage transfer for the travel between Bergen and Oslo.
Day 11: THE FLÅM RAILWAY EXPERIENCE
In the morning, you'll experience the famous Flåm Railway as it climbs 900 metres over a span of 20 kilometres up the winding track to the Myrdal Station. Here you will switch to the Bergensbanen train that takes you over the mountainous rooftops of Norway. This ride will take you through the charming villages of Geilo and Gol before concluding in Oslo, where you will spend your last night in this amazing country.
Day 12: IDYLLIC ICELAND & NORTHERN LIGHT HUNT
This morning, enjoy some last-minute shopping, visit one of Oslo’s many museums or relax at a café, before heading to the airport for your flight to Iceland. On arrival to Keflavik International Airport, you will be greeted by a driver who will take you to your accommodation in Reykjavík .
In the evening, get ready to search for the otherworldly northern lights. You will join a guided small group bus tour with a knowledgeable driver that will find a great spot to view the white, green and sometimes red lights dancing and flickering in the sky.
Spend the next five nights in Reykjavik.
Day 13: REYKJAVÍK CITY WALK & BLUE LAGOON
After breakfast, enjoy an exclusive walking tour in the heart of Reykjavík. You’ll join a small group and a friendly local guide. The tour starts at Ingólfur Square (“Ingólfstorg”) in the city centre.
Over the course of the 2-hour walk, your guide will introduce you to the bustling downtown area. They will also point out great restaurants, charming cafés and museums in the area.
The highlights you’ll see on this tour include the Harpa concert hall, the old harbour area, the parliament building, the Reykjavík pond and more! This is a great way to see the best of the Icelandic capital and get some insider knowledge on hidden gems in the city.
Later in the afternoon, you will be picked up for a bus transfer to the famous Blue Lagoon spa. Here, you can spend your time bathing in the heated geothermal outdoor pool, which is rich in silica and soothing for your skin. There is also a mask bar, a sauna and steam room to take advantage of. Or enjoy a spa treatment (must be booked in advance).
After relaxing in the warm waters, you can choose to dine at the luxurious Lava Restaurant on-site, before taking the bus back to Reykjavík.
Spend the night in Reykjavík.
Day 14: Exploring the Golden Circle
Today you visit some of Iceland’s most famous attractions with a small guided group tour of the classic “Golden Circle” route in South Iceland. You will start the day heading to Hveragerði where the bus will make a short stop before continuing on your journey.
One of the many highlights you’ll see today is the impressive Kerið Crater. Other attractions include the magical two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall and the spouting hot springs of Geysir . While Geysir lies dormant, its neighbour Strokkur erupts every few minutes, gushing steam and water high into the air.
The last stop of the day is Þingvellir National Park , a place of great historical and geological significance. It is also one of Iceland’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Þingvellir is the site of the country’s first parliament and is located along the edge of the great rift between the Eurasian and American tectonic plates.
Day 15: The South Coast – Glaciers and Black Sand Beaches
Enjoy a guided group tour along the striking south coast of Iceland on another day of adventures. Start your journey with a stop at the picture-perfect, 60-metre-high (197-foot-high) Skógafoss waterfall. Next you’ll stop at Reynisfjara , a hauntingly beautiful black sand beach. You will then continue towards the town of Vík where you’ll make a photo stop at the local church, which offers expansive views of the landscape.
Then it is time to head back along the south coast. You will stop at Sólheimajökull glacier where you will learn everything about glaciers and the area. The last highlight of the day is the picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which is 40 metres (131 feet) high. Its main attraction, besides the scenery, is the pathway leading behind the waterfall, giving you a chance to admire the falls from all angles. Later, you’ll return to Reykjavík.
Day 16: YOUR ICELANDIC ADVENTURE
Today is up to you! You could choose to join an exciting optional activity like snorkeling in the Silfra fissure at Þingvellir National Park, or riding a stocky and adorable Icelandic horse, or even venturing inside a glacier. The Into the Glacier tour is highly recommended. You would be transported to Húsafell in the west, transfer to a customised vehicle to climb the glacier, and get to explore the actual ice in Iceland from the inside.
If you are up for a more leisurely day, you could choose to relax in Reykjavik. Options include visiting a local swimming pool, checking out museums, or strolling the charming streets to see where the day takes you. Keep in mind that your travel consultant can fulfill customised requests like renting a car or booking activities that you enjoy.
Spend the night in Reykjavik.
Day 17: DEPARTURE FROM ICELAND
Your adventure in Scandinavia and Iceland has come to an end. Depart to Keflavik International Airport via a semi-private transfer. If your flight is in the afternoon, you will have time to visit some of Reykjavik´s boutiques or museums. You may also opt to take an exciting optional activity (not included).

FIND YOUR NORTH STAR
Iceland cruises.
Discover a northern paradise where ice meets mountains and nature abounds.
Cruise to Iceland, where you can visit the enchanting cities of Reykjavik and Akureyri and marvel at the country's rough and unusual natural wonders. With a population of only 123,300 people, Iceland's capital and largest city, Reykjavik, is home to colourful houses, a bustling arts scene and centuries of history. For a glimpse into the northern past, check out the Settlement Exhibition, a combination of an archaeological ruin and museum based around a 10th-century house. Then, commune with nature at the world-famous Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa built on a lava field and heated with geothermal energy. Pamper yourself with mud masks and massages while wading in the soothing waters. Even though Akureyri has only 18,000 residents, it's called the Capital of the North for a reason. Head there to warm up in the steaming thermal pool at the head of Iceland's longest fjord, Eyjafjordur.

ADMIRE THE ARCTIC
In Iceland, you'll see rare and stunning nature, from dramatic black rocks to cascading waterfalls and glittering glaciers. Whether you bathe in the natural hot springs of Blue Lagoon or sample the delicious and surprising specialtiies of Reykjavik, you'll be enamored by Icelandic culture.
BECOME A LAMB STEWARD
Most Icelandic cuisine is based on fish, lamb, dairy and root vegetables. Stop by Icelandic Fish and Chips in Reykjavik to find the best Icelandic meat stew, made with lamb, potatoes, carrots and herbs. If you're brave enough, try hakarl (fermented shark) – but be sure to wash it down with a local craft beer from Lady Brewery.
FEEL THE FLORA
Because the terrain tends to be barren and rocky, Iceland isn't particularly known for its plants and trees. At Akureyri's Lystigardurinn, the northernmost botanical garden in the world, however, you'll be able to spot 430 native species of colourful, wild arctic flowers in one spot.
VOLCANIC VIEWS
Hop on a free shuttle in Reykjavik to make your way from Harpa Music Hall to Perlan Dome. At this world-class museum, watch volcanoes, glaciers and geothermal marvels come alive through cutting-edge technology and groundbreaking science. You'll be able to experience Iceland's many natural wonders and attractions all at once at this rotating glass museum.
GET TO KNOW THE NORTH
While you might come to Iceland to glimpse the gorgeous natural wonders the country offers, you'll also find that the cultural highlights are unforgettable as well. Explore the country's past in one of the museums, or check out the works of contemporary designers, who prove Iceland is the definition of cool.
DESIGNING ICELAND
If you're searching for the best shopping spots in Iceland, head to Laugavegur, also known as 'The Wash Road'. Reykjavik's hippest shopping street offers designer clothes, artisanal wools and design-driven home goods. You can also go to the excellent Kolaportio Flea Market in Akureyri, where you'll find many shops with trendy local designer brands, fun souvenirs and high-fashion labels.
ARCHITECTURAL MARVELS
Located just southeast of Reykjavik's city center, the Expressionist-style church known as Hallgrimskirkja looms over the streets, mirroring the mountains and glaciers beyond. Enjoy panoramic views from the 75-metre-high spire. Or head to Akureyri's basalt church, Akureyrarkirkja, which also dominates the skyline with its striking futuristic facade. You'll marvel at the ship that hangs from the ceiling, reflecting the Nordic tradition of giving offerings to protect loved ones at sea.
HOBBIT HIDEAWAYS
When in Akureyri, make sure you visit the nearby village of Laufas, where you'll find beautiful, picturesque turf-roofed farmhouses built in the 1860s. They're a window into how Icelanders once lived and may remind you of the hobbit houses in 'The Lord of the Rings'.
THIS LAND OF ICE WILL TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY
Step aboard a cruise to Iceland and discover the enchanting cities of Reykjavik and Akureyri with their colourful houses and relaxing thermal pools. Climb glacial mountains, watch the Northern Lights, or dine on fermented shark. You'll be swept away in Iceland.
ATLANTIC ARRIVAL
Arrive in Iceland via a transatlantic getaway , but don't forget to make some tropical stops as well. Try local delicacies, go snorkelling or see the natural marvels of the great European cities and Caribbean ports . Iceland is just one magnificent stop along this gorgeous route.
CITY CRUISIN'
Cruise straight to Iceland and watch the cities of Akureyri and Reykjavik come alive. Stroll around the city streets, or go hiking in the surrounding mountains. Sample the regional cuisine, have a drink with the locals and relax in one of many hot volcanic spas.
Be sure to enjoy the view from the observation deck at the Perlan museum in Reykjavik. It's a great spot to watch the Northern Lights.
Keep your eye out for a festival if you are visiting during the summer, as they pop up quite frequently.
Several cafes and museums offer free Wi-Fi, so feel free to post photos of your trip.
CUISINE TEMPTING TREATS
Both the capital Reykjavik and the Akureyri have a large variety of restaurants, where you can eat local or international dishes. Icelandic cuisine is largely based on dairy products, fish, lamb, root vegetables and herbs, so get ready for a hearty meal.
LADLE IT ON
Iceland's cold waters produce top-quality seafood, and one of the country's signature ways to enjoy the fruits of the sea is fiskisupa, or fish stew. Made with cod or haddock, potatoes, butter, milk and herbs, it's a hearty, stick-to-your-ribs way to enjoy the local bounty.
NOT YOUR AVERAGE HOT DOG
Made from mostly lamb, hot dogs are the national street food of Iceland – you won't have to look far to find one! They're typically made with a mix of local, Iceland-raised pork, beef and lamb. Slather yours with pylsusinnep, a sweet brown mustard, or remoulade, a tangy combination of mayo, mustard, capers and herbs.
FERMENTED FAVOURITES
Since not a lot grows in Iceland during much of the year, the local cuisine has developed a strong traditional of preserving foods through fermentation. If you're brave enough, try hakarl, the national dish of fermented shark. If you're not feeling up for the challenge, try herring pickled in vinegar and served atop a slice of dense rye bread.

Plan an amazing vacation to Iceland!
Taking a Cruise around Iceland: A Comprehensive Guide
In the last 5 years or so, lots of cruise companies have started offering Iceland circumnavigation cruises. These are cruises that start and end in Reykjavik, and stop in many ports around Iceland along the way. In 2022 and 2023, you have Iceland cruise options from Iceland ProCruises, Hurtigruten, Viking, Windstar, and Crystal Cruises. Norwegian Cruises offers an Iceland and Greenland cruise, and may offer an Iceland only cruise soon.
Should you take a cruise around Iceland? If so, which company is the best? Which excursions should you choose? We can help with everything you need to plan an amazing Iceland cruise vacation!
Also be sure to check out our new Facebook group all about Iceland Cruises !
Small ship cruising around Iceland
I’m a big fan of a single-country cruise. Of course, our web site is all about Iceland, so we’re biased. Still, you can’t help but find a deep appreciation for Icelandic culture when you spend a week there. You don’t get that if you wake up in a new country every other day.
Cruise ships that go around Iceland are small; you won’t find any of the typical enormous cruise ships stopping in these smaller Icelandic towns. Fewer passengers is one of the reasons these cruises are expensive; often significantly more expensive than planning a trip around Iceland yourself. But they take away almost all of the stress of planning your trip. Food, lodging, and transportation are all taken care of. And activities are too, since you’ll likely pay to add excursions!
Let’s look at the pros and cons of each of the companies that offers Iceland cruises.
Iceland ProCruises in Iceland
In 2021, we took a trip with Iceland ProCruises ( IcelandProCruises.com ), and recommend it. One of the co-owners is Icelandic, and most of the excursion team is too. Their ship only holds a maximum of 210 passengers. This is definitely a unique way to see some more remote parts of Iceland! Here’s a typical itinerary for an Iceland ProCruises cruise:
Pros of an Iceland ProCruises cruise
- Co-owned by a local Icelander. Most of the staff is Icelandic, and so you get to spend a lot of time hanging out with Icelanders
- The smallest ship option. Ocean Diamond holds a maximum of 210 passengers.
- The least expensive option by a good margin. The price for a group or family of 3 is absolutely unbeatable.
- Excursions are clearly shown on the web site, and premium excursion prices are reasonable.
Cons of an Iceland ProCruises cruise
- The small ship doesn’t have many amenities. There’s a small spa and one restaurant. The hot tub hasn’t worked on recent cruises
- Focuses on Iceland. All of their cruises visit only Iceland, or Iceland and Greenland
- No free excursion options. (But Iceland Step By Step can customize city walking yours for you, for free!)
- The ship doesn’t stop on the south coast, so you miss some parts of Iceland. You can cover this with a land tour before or after, though.
Hurtigruten cruises in Iceland
Hurtigruten is a UK based company that has been offering cruises since 1893. The tend to offer cruises to more remote areas: Iceland and Greenland, but also The Galápagos Islands and Antarctica. Hurtigruten offers scientific exploration as well as tourism. The circumnavigation map is similar to Iceland ProCrusies, though they stop at different ports in the Westfjords and in North and East Iceland.
There are 2 different ships doing Iceland circumnavigations in 2022: Fram and Nansen. Fram holds 250 passengers, and Nansen holds 528. Nansen is much bigger, but also much newer: It was built in 2020! Fram was built in 2007, but is expected to be refurbished in early 2022. So if you join Hurtigruten for an Iceland circumnavigation cruise in 2022, you’re getting a new ship. Nansen is the brand new ship that you’ll be on on the June 2022 Iceland cruises. it’s a beautiful ship:
Pros of a Hurtigruten Iceland cruise
- Brand new or refurbished ship
- Children as young as 6 welcome (but the cruise is wonderful for adults too!) 50% discount for kids,
- Opportunities for citizen science
- Many excisions are included for free (Mostly walking tours.)
Cons of a Hurtigruten Iceland cruise
- No Icelanders on the expedition team. (You won’t fund any outside of Iceland ProCruises, though!)
- Significantly more expensive than the cheapest options with Iceland ProCruises
- Only a few date choices for Iceland Circumnavigation per summer
Viking Cruises in Iceland
Viking is the big player in Iceland circumnavigation cruises. They have a cruise leaving Reykjavik every week throughout the summer. The Viking Star will spend its entire summer going round and round Iceland. While Viking claims this ships holds “only” 930 passengers, that’s the largest ship offered for a circumnavigation Iceland cruise!
But that larger ship gives you access to many more amenities. You’ll find 2 pools, a premium Nordic spa, a sports deck, and several lounges. The Star won’t match the amenities on larger ships; there’s no casino here. Still, you’ll find the most offerings on this ship for an Iceland circumnavigation cruise.
The itinerary is similar to the others, though with fewer port stops; the cruises are a day or 2 shorter, since the ship is back in Reykjavik every week.
Pros of a Viking Iceland cruise
- The most amenities of any ship here
- Frequent departures mean you can book a cruise that fits your schedule
- Inexpensive relative to most of the options here. Frequent promotions can make Viking about as cheap as Iceland ProCruises for double occupancy.
- Free walking tour excursions at all ports.
Cons of a Viking Iceland cruise
- The larger ship may not always be able to dock on land (at the Westman Islands, for example.) A zodiac boat will ferry you to shore.
- No one under 18 is allowed (though you may see this as a good thing!)
- Excursion options are all listed on the web site, but prices are not shown
Windstar Cruises in Iceland
Windstar’s cruise is similar to Viking; trips leaves most weeks from Reykjavik, which means it’s a slightly shorter trip with fewer stops. You’re onboard the Star Pride, which was renovated in 2021 to have all suite rooms.
The Star Pride holds 312 passengers, but you still get many of the amenities of the larger Viking ship: an infinity pool, a spa, several restaurants, and ample lounge space.
The Windstar cruise also only makes 5 stops, just like Viking. Hurtigruten makes 6, and Iceland ProCruises makes 8.
Pros of a Windstar Iceland cruise
- Brand new all suite layout. There are many different types of rooms, but all feature a separate living area.
- Includes a zodiac boat tour of Surtsey, a protected island that emerged from the ocean in the 1960s.
- A good amount of amenities for a smaller ship.
Cons of a Windstar Iceland cruise
- No free shore excursions.
- Many excursions seem very expensive (whale watching in Akureyri, for example.)
- (Optional) outside dining on Star Pride might not be enjoyable on cold Icelandic evenings
Crystal Cruises in Iceland (well, reborn in 2023! )
Crystal Cruises’ Expedition Iceland is the longest cruise you’ll find here: 10 nights. It’s also the most expensive, and far and away the most luxurious. You will have 24-hour access to a butler! The ship is the brand new Crystal Endeavor, and it only holds 200 passengers. But there’s a casino, a 2-story solarium, and so much more.
The long duration of the cruise lets you get to some places the other ships skip.
Many of those stops in North Iceland would take you hours of driving to see; no other cruise is going to get you to the stunning Látrabjarg bird cliffs. But this cruise doesn’t come cheap; the cheapest price is more than twice the cost of any other cruise. But what a cruise it is.
Pros of a Crystal Cruises Iceland cruise
- Free warm clothing. A good selection of free and paid excursions
- Luxury like no other Iceland cruise: A butler and Michelin-inspired dining
- The longest option with access to surprising area up north
Cons of a Crystal Cruises Iceland cruise
- Very expensive. Several times the price of cheaper options on other ships
- That’s really it. If you can afford it, this is an amazing cruise on an amazing ship.
Aurora Expeditions Iceland Cruises
Aurora gives you just one Iceland circumnavigation cruise per year, at least in 2022. You only choice is August 1-11. If that works for your schedule, this is an option worth considering. This is the smallest ship here, at least by length: The Greg Mortimer (yes, that’s the name of the ship!) holds just 126 passengers, and is just 343 feet long.
The small ship allows you to get to one port that no other ship here stops at: Höfn. Höfn is on the South coast of Iceland, and is very close to famous glacier lagoons in that part of the country. If you want to see those lagoons on other cruises, you may find yourself on a 2-hour bus journey from a very different port.
Pros of Aurora Expeditions Iceland Cruises
- A smaller ship gets you better access to the south coast of Iceland
- basic excursions are included in the price
Cons of Aurora Expeditions Iceland Cruises
- The smaller ship means higher prices, though not as high as Crystal Cruises
- Only one cruise per year around Iceland
National Geographic Iceland Cruises
National Geographic partners with Lindblad Expeditions to operate 3 cruises around Iceland every summer. You’ll be on either the National Geographic Explorer, which holds 148 passengers, or the National Geographic Resolution, which holds 126 passengers.
These cruises are all-inclusive. You can add on land days before or after the cruise, but on the cruise itself, everything is included. All excursions are induced in the price, including a clever land portion up North. You aren’t even expected to tip!
Note the red “Motor Route” on the map above. You get off the ship at Akureyri, and then explore the Diamond Circle and Mývatn areas up North. Then the ship meets you up in Húsavík to continue the cruise.
Pros of a National Geographic Iceland Cruise
- All inclusive. Everyone does the same thing at the same time.
- Small boats, with under 150 passengers
- Clever bus portion of the trip up North to see more interior areas without backtracking.
- A walking tour and meals are included on your arrival day in Reykjavik before boarding the ship.
Cons of a National Geographic Iceland Cruise
- Expensive. The only more expensive option in Crystal Cruises. The all-inclusiveness does make the cost less extreme, though.
- The National Geographic Explorer ship is older, and lacks some amenities like a pool. But you’re probably not in Iceland for the pool!
Which Iceland circumnavigation cruise to choose?
Every single one of these cruises will be an amazing Iceland experience. They all have well-thought out itineraries and will lead to an unforgettable adventure.
With that said, we’re partial to Iceland ProCruises. This is the least expensive option, for one of the longer trips. Many of the expedition members are Icelandic, which to me is a big perk. You won’t find many amenities on the ship, so look elsewhere if a pool and expansive spa are what you’re looking for.
Hurtigruten is another good choice, with the option of a brand new ship and some unique science-based opportunities.
Viking is another great choice, with weekly departures and larger ships with more amenities.
But seriously, these are all fantastic options. Contact us if you’d like help planning your trip! We often have discounts or bonuses we can provide you as a travel agent for your Iceland vacation. And we can create custom pre- and post- cruise touring options you won’t get anywhere else.
Just fill out the short form below and we’ll be in touch soon!

We have been to the south side. I really want to do the full circle! I’m mulling whether to really consider taking a daughter and two granddaughters who will be 14 and 12, great travelers and truly good kids. Is there a trip you would recommend and that also touches Greenland? Thank you in advance
October 31, 2023 at 2:14 pm
Hi Lorna! You have a few options for cruises that visit Iceland and Greenland. Norwegian is your cheapest option, with a 10 day cruise. But it’s on a very large ship, and it on;y makes 3 stops in Iceland before heading to Greenland.
Iceland ProCrusies offers a combo package of 2 cruises. First you circumnavigate Iceland, and then once you’re back in Reykjavik, the same ship leaves for Greenland.
Hurtigruten also offers a longer cruise that visits both Iceland and Greenland.

Cosmopolitan Reykjavík
Discover iceland's modern capital..
Your Iceland expedition cruise starts in Reykjavík, a vibrant city full of art, culture, and history. Enjoy a walk around this compact city. Take a stroll down Laugavegur, the main shopping street, to the striking Hallgrímskirkja church. Or visit one of its many art galleries and museums.
With so much to explore, consider arriving early to join one of our Pre-Programs and explore the Golden Circle or Icelandic Highlands.
Your Iceland adventure at sea starts when you board the ship. Find your cabin, meet your Expedition Team, explore the ship, and enjoy a relaxed welcome dinner as we set sail towards our first stop, Stykkishólmur.
Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Gateway to spectacular snæfellsnes.
Time has stood still at Stykkishólmur, the small fishing town in Breiðafjörður bay. Here, the colorful houses stand in contrast to the distant mountains.
Nearby, you’ll find Snæfellsnes Peninsula National Park, with the ice-capped Snæfellsjökull volcano at the peninsula’s western tip. It’s nicknamed 'Little Iceland', for its wide variety of volcanic landscapes.
At the national park, visit Djúpalónssandur's black-sand beach and the Lóndrangar basalt cliffs. Ride a snowcat to the top of the Snæfellsjökull glacier, or take a guided coastal hike with a glacial cave tour.
Beautiful Patreksfjörður
Birdwatching, waterfalls and stunning beaches.
Patreksfjörður is unforgettably beautiful. Learn about the fishing traditions in Europe’s westernmost village. You can even enjoy a dip in the town’s outdoor pool, which features wonderful fjord views.
You’ll have the chance to explore the surrounding area on a hike through the fjords or visit Rauðasandur beach and see seals. You can also join a tour to Dynjandi waterfalls. These are six combined falls that, together, comprise the largest and most spectacular cascade in the Westfjords.
Birdwatchers shouldn’t miss a visit to Látrabjarg, where puffins, northern gannets, guillemots, and razorbills cling to Europe’s largest bird cliff.
The Northwestern Region
Exploring northwest iceland, expedition-style.
One of the best things about expedition cruising is the feeling of freedom. We plan to spend the day in Iceland’s Northwestern Region, but as conditions can vary, there's no pre-set plan. Rest assured, your Captain and expedition team will find the best opportunities for adventure.
We may take you ashore in our small boats (RIBs) for a hike or a beach clean-up. Or maybe we’ll launch our kayaks. If we spot a pod of whales as we’re sailing, we may stop to enjoy the sight. Be ready for anything!
Don’t forget, you can also join onboard lectures, visit the Science Center, get tips from our professional photographer, or soak in a hot tub!
Akureyri and Goðafoss
Dramatic moonscapes and waterfalls.
Gaze at snowcapped peaks as we cruise along Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord. It's one of the best places in Europe to spot humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, and harbor porpoises. Look out for orcas, blue whales, and fin whales, too.
Iceland’s 'Northern Capital’, Akureyri, sits at the base of the fjord. Here, you can enjoy the oasis of a botanical garden and visit top-notch eateries and museums.
A little further afield, witness the picturesque Goðafoss waterfall, where turquoise waters pound against black rocks. Keep an eye out for eider ducks and Harlequin ducks at Lake Mývatn, one of Iceland’s most active volcanic areas.
Grímsey’s puffins
Cross the arctic circle and see atlantic puffins..
This remote and windswept island is home to just 60 people and is renowned for its Atlantic puffin colonies. Grímsey is steeped in folklore, including tales of the island’s first settler, Grímur.
Grímsey is probably best known for its proximity to the Arctic Circle, which actually cuts across the island—the only part of Iceland to do so. You’ll have the opportunity to step across that line, hopping over to the Arctic and back.
Hike to the Orbis et Globus sculpture, a huge concrete sphere that is repositioned each year to fit the northward movement of the Arctic Circle. By 2050, Grímsey will lie outside the Arctic.
Hike in Bakkagerði
Local folklore and staggering natural beauty.
Your Iceland cruise continues to the tiny, remote settlement of Bakkagerði. According to folklore, Bakkagerði is inhabited by a large population of local land spirits or elves, known as huldufólk, meaning ‘hidden people’. Walk around town to explore this magical place.
This popular hiking area features lush valleys and gorgeous scenery among colorful rhyolite rocks. The coastal cliffs are home to fulmars, kittiwakes, eider ducks, and puffins. We may also visit the Atlantic puffin colony on Hafnarhólmi, a true gem for nature lovers and wildlife photographers.
Heimaey's explosive past
Discover the town that defied a volcano..
Heimaey is the only inhabited island in the Westman Islands, off the Iceland’s southern coast. It has a fascinating history and still bears the scars of the powerful volcanic eruption that nearly destroyed the island.
Visit Eldheimar, a museum that features an excavated home frozen in time, and learn more about the eruption and its aftermath. You could also take a hike to find puffins at Stórhöfði, where nearly 8 million of them nest every summer. Don’t pass up the chance to climb Mount Eldfell to the volcano’s summit, where you–ll have incredible views of the town below.
Reykjavík and beyond
Enjoy reykjavík at your leisure.
Your Iceland expedition cruise concludes back in fascinating Reykjavík. This is a great chance to see the places you missed when you arrived.
Relaxing with friends in a heittur pottur, a geothermal pool, is part of Icelandic culture. Before you leave, visit Iceland’s most famous place to do so: the Blue Lagoon. This is one of the true natural wonders of the world—experience the blend of silica, algae, and minerals in its geothermal waters.
You can also join our Post-Program and explore Iceland's beautiful south coast, with waterfalls, black-sand beaches, geothermal springs and majestic mountains.

How likely is it to be cloudy weather? The ship will be at Isafjordur; eclipse data show beginning around 4:45, totality around 5:45pm, conclusion around 6:45pm. One site I'm seeing suggests that the chances of clear weather are dicey at best. Any suggestions?

No one can second guess what the weather may be. Iceland sits in the North Atlantic just below the Arctic Circle. It’s a maritime climate which is not stable.
Cruises are not ideal way to see Iceland. There is little infrastructure in small ports to support passengers. IMHO they are a rip off.
Go to Iceland by land to see this amazing country & manage expectations regards the eclipse.
Cruises aren't the best way to view Iceland anyway. You're much better off driving.
Smudge and Tara....thanks so much for the quick responses!
I know all about the problem with the weather in parts of NY state. I drove up to the Finger Lakes since the area visited was right outside the path, and then would have driven another 30 minutes to get to Penn Yan (or even Geneva) since both were in the projected path. Weather was overcast so the impact of it was one of the significant change from light to dark (and much colder). Memorable in its own way, but would have been great to see something. The day before was absolutely beautiful with not a cloud in the sky, so 24 hours made the difference.
"However, if you could drive out of Niagara Falls, there were beautiful views only about an hour away (where we were).".......Where were you? Just curious. We were in Hammondsport, at the bottom of Keuka Lake. We really like it there and had been to the same resort before, so it made for an enjoyable 4-day getaway even without getting to see the eclipse. Our daughter drove from her home in Arcadia, CA to Russellville, AR (visited relatives there) and had good viewing. I believe the Rochester area didn't have real good weather either.
I agree with the others that a cruise for Iceland is the worst way to see the country.
Thanks so much for additional thoughts!

Fjords, Pharaohs or Koalas? Time to Plan for Your Next Eclipse.
If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.
- Share full article
By Danielle Dowling
Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”
“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.
So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.
Future Eclipses
Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .
Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.
Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.
A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.
“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”
Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.
The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.
But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.
The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.
If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.
Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”
