Set List: Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour

This spectacular, outer-space-themed show—packed with special effects such as fireworks and lasers—is in support of the UK rock band’s 2021 album Music of the Spheres, which was produced by Max Martin and inspired partly by Star Wars. The energy is expectedly euphoric. “Playing live is the reason we exist as a band,” lead vocalist Chris Martin tells Apple Music. “That’s where we feel most at home and where our recordings really come alive. And we’ve been blessed with the most incredible audiences. We just love it.” Whether you’re preparing for an upcoming show or revisiting one you recently attended, explore the set list and put yourself in the crowd.

SUSTAINABILITY PLAN ‘A WORK IN PROGRESS’

SHOW POWERED BY 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY

PLEDGE TO CUT TOUR EMISSIONS BY 50%

ONE TREE PLANTED FOR EVERY TICKET SOLD

In 2019, Coldplay committed to making their future tours  as environmentally beneficial as possible , and today’s announcement is accompanied by a comprehensive set of sustainability initiatives and environmental commitments.

Full details can be seen at  coldplay.com/sustainability , including commitments to:

  • cut direct emissions by 50% compared to the band’s most recent tour (2016-17).
  • power the show entirely by renewable, super-low emission energy – with solar installations at every venue, waste cooking oil, a kinetic stadium floor and kinetic bikes powered by fans. This power will be stored in the first ever mobile, rechargeable show battery (made from recyclable BMW i3 batteries).
  • draw down significantly more CO2 than the tour produces with a range of nature- and technology-based solutions, including planting one tree for every ticket sold.
  • provide each venue with a sustainability rider requesting best environmental practices.
  • encourage fans to use low carbon transport to and from shows via the official tour app built by SAP, rewarding those who do with a discount at venues.
  • ensure all merchandise is sustainably and ethically sourced.
  • offer free drinking water and strive to eliminate plastic bottles at every venue.
  • put 10% of all earnings into a fund for environmental and socially-conscious causes, including ClientEarth, One Tree Planted and The Ocean Cleanup.
  • establish a partnership with climate change experts at Imperial College London’s Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment to quantify the impact of the tour – both positively and negatively – on the environment
  • together with Green Nation, Live Nation’s sustainability platform, Coldplay will be a special artist advisor, ensuring the sustainable practices developed on this tour are shared, adopted and scaled through the rest of the live touring industry.

Coldplay said:

“Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together.

At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far.

If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

Chris Martin fronts Coldplay at Wembley. Photograph by Stevie Rae Gibbs

Coldplay review – one massive, euphoric singalong

Wembley stadium, London What lights up, wears alien masks and runs on Chris Martin’s gigawatt energy? It’s Coldplay’s latest, family-friendly attempt at global domination

O h, to have been a fly on the wall at the production meetings for Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour, currently winding up a run of six sold-out nights at London’s Wembley stadium. Umpteen stakeholders would have pondered the tour’s environmental aspects in the wake of Coldplay’s 2019 announcement that they would stop touring while they worked out how to make it less worse for the planet.

Sceptics should note that the band’s light-up wristbands, always magical, are now made of compostable plastic. Anyone with any passing knowledge of Coldplay gigs knows that the play of the colour across the venue, like a murmuration of starlings, is one of the greatest spectacles in stadium showmanship. The floor is wired to harness the kinetic energy of 90,000 bouncing souls. If only they could wire up Chris Martin himself, who exudes gigawatts of energy running around, belting out the hits. The band reportedly ferry stuff around using as little carbon as possible – although if any act could pull off a fleet of Phileas Fogg-style solar-powered hot-air zeppelins, it’s this one, with their Tiggerish optimism and penchant for unleashing brightly coloured balloons. The giant beach balls come out on Adventure of a Lifetime , two songs into this generous, career-spanning set – one that baffles as much as it dazzles.

Oh, to have seen the expressions when Martin (presumably) sketched out a series of lurid, light-up alien masks for the band to wear on Infinity Sign. The headgear abounds with antennae, eyes and ears, and for bassist Guy Berryman there’s a Marvin the Martian mohican. One of the core messages of Music of the Spheres , Coldplay’s ninth album, released last year, is: “ Everyone is an alien somewhere .” And while it’s hard not to applaud the band’s stance, it’s boggling to imagine what Martin (presumably) had to say to his fellow talented multimillionaires to persuade them to carry on like demented football club mascots and play their instruments at the same time.

Did no one balk at the embrace of puppetry, innovative as it is? Music of the Spheres is set in space (sort of) and co-stars the non-human Angel Moon , who “sings” a couple of tracks. Sure, everyone loves a Muppet – Angel Moon is the work of the Jim Henson studio. Martin duets with her (operated by a puppeteer) on Biutyful , a gentle love song about the redemptive powers of love in the face of everything going to hell in a handcart (even if handcarts are green modes of transport).

But while puppetry has an arty history, all this just feels like an appeal to an audience so young we’ve run out of alphabet to describe it. While Coldplay’s hook-up with BTS, My Universe , crossed over with Gen Z, and their song with Selena Gomez, Let Somebody Go , made hay with millennials, here Coldplay appear to be courting the under-10s. And did no one notice that Angel Moon looks like an unfortunate caricature of Grimes , the long-tressed, often winged, often alien-looking electronic artist whose own ventures draw far more knowledgeably on the history of sci-fi?

The problem is not some minor cringe. Coldplay have long since opted out of tiresome binaries such as cool v uncool; it’s the height of uncool to go on about how uncool they are. Biggest band in the world for some years. End of conversation.

Chris Martin in the middle of ‘90,000 bouncing souls’ at Wembley.

But their move away from rock into actual light entertainment is sealed tonight. Three evenings into the residency, Natalie Imbruglia replaces previous guest Craig David and performs her 1993 earworm Torn – not in itself the issue, so much as the massive singalong of Summer Nights from Grease . It’s in memory of the late Olivia Newton-John , who, Martin explains, he and his dad got to know in Australia some years ago in the company of Imbruglia. But doing songs from musicals, crowd-pleasing as they are? Coldplay seem to have thrown much to the wind in pursuit of the mass euphoric singalong, borrowing greedily from everyone in dance music, especially those with headgear, with the aim of building ever more vast audiences.

In 2014, Coldplay released A Sky Full of Stars , a collaboration with the late producer Avicii, a mile-marker where Martin et al became particularly enamoured of the euphoria of superstar DJ raves. Other forays followed, such as with Stargate (2015) and Something Just Like This, their hit with the Chainsmokers.

Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland at Wembley stadium.

Coldplay have always had a pop reach – the product of strong melodies, frontman charisma and songs about universals. They landed upon the “woah oh oh” as a form of Esperanto that allowed them to commune as effectively in Taipei as they do in São Paulo . But somewhere along the line, they began to actively expand into a kind of borderless, tune-mongering phenomenon. Music of the Spheres bears the hallmark of the biggest of them all, Max Martin , whose production style continues to shape the charts even now, 22 years after his signature smash, Britney Spears’s …Baby One More Time.

A missionary hellbent on increasing his flock, Martin’s expansionist drive is perplexing. Coldplay don’t seem like the kinds of guys to get caught up in macho pissing contests. Anyone with a passing grasp of environmental issues knows that exponential growth is a hubristic chimera, the core principle of capitalism responsible for the planet’s imminent breakdown. Also: does size matter? Martin is arguably at his greatest armed with just a piano and a bruised heart.

It is, categorically, a lot of fun to witness 90,000 people wig out to a band they love. People come to a stadium show for the absurd audio-visual lunacy . Yes, of course bands need to evolve. But Martin is perfectly capable of nailing the human condition without this massive outreach programme.

“Nobody said it was easy,” he sings on The Scientist, with 90,000 backing vocalists tonight, a lyric applicable to solving the climate crisis as it is to maintaining one’s art nearly a quarter of a century into the game. “No one ever said it would be so hard.”

Coldplay Set ‘Sustainable and Low-Carbon’ Stadium Tour in Support of ‘Music of the Spheres’

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

A day before Coldplay drop their new album Music of the Spheres , the band has announced a 2022 “sustainable and low-carbon” tour that will bring the new LP to stadiums around the world.

The Music of the Spheres Tour — kicking off March 18th, 2022 in Costa Rica — aims to cut direct emissions from Coldplay’s last tour in 2017 by 50%, as well as power each show entirely by renewable, super-low emission energy; that includes installing solar panels at each venue, “kinetic stadium floor and kinetic bikes powered by fans,” and transporting around a mobile, rechargeable show battery to store the energy.

“Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together,” the band said in a statement of the eco-friendly efforts , a collaboration with Live Nation’s sustainability platform Green Nation. “At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far.”

Additionally, for every ticket the band sells to their upcoming tour, they’ll plant one tree. Coldplay will also give 10% of all earnings to a fund aiding environmental causes, including ClientEarth, One Tree Planted, and the Ocean Cleanup. Coldplay will also offer free drinking water at each gig — but sans plastic bottles — and offer sustainable and ethically sourced merchandise.

The band added, “If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

The Music of the Spheres Tour reaches the U.S. on April 23rd, 2022 at Santa Clara, California’s Levi’s Stadium, currently concluding June 14th in Tampa, Florida. For the majority of the U.S. tour, H.E.R. will serve as the opening act. Tickets for the stadium tour go on sale to the public on October 22nd.

“Riedel’s solutions have been a total game changer,” says Ali Viles, Director of Mission Control . “Our completely new design and usage of this system have not only increased functionality and workflow, but also saved touring equipment weight, significantly reducing our carbon footprint. This new use case has enabled Riedel to gain exposure in new markets, developing a firm foundation for our current and future clients.”

Mission Control is using the completely new design and implementation of the Riedel hardware for several applications. Artist-1024’s high-speed MADI stream, running at a sample rate of 96k, delivers a high-resolution, super-low-latency listening experience. This allows backline techs and the audio crew to control their own audio mixes discretely from over a dozen locations around the stadium and communicate seamlessly, while still listening to their individual monitor mixes on IEMs. Combining 1200 Series SmartPanels with Bolero and Artist’s capabilities for audio mixing, the complete system enables the team to combine, monitor, and adjust individual audio elements effortlessly, helping them to deliver a high-quality and immersive experience for Coldplay audiences anywhere across the globe.

“We are excited to continue working with Mission Control on this completely new use case, helping Coldplay’s touring crew deliver the unique performance experience that this tour is renowned for,” says Nacho Lee, U.K. Sales Manager at Riedel . “This tour has been a great way to showcase the versatility of Riedel hardware in being able to handle far more than just comms, and our company looks forward to seeing how this system will enable crucial audio monitoring, mixing, and more as the tour continues around the world.

Riedel powers live music implementation for Coldplay Tour

7 CDs You Probably Owned, Threw Out and Now Are Worth Bank

O nce MP3s became truly viable, it was a relief to anyone seeking storage space. No longer did you need cheap plastic towers filled with cheaper plastic squares to store all the music you held dear. With an afternoon and a CD drive, you could rip all your most personally important songs to your computer, and toss the world ’ s noisiest trash bag directly on the curb. Sure, you might have had a passing thought that they ’ d be worth something someday, but it ’ s hard to argue that, especially at the time, a collection of spiderweb-cracked jewel cases felt like a “forever” sort of thing, holding none of the charm of vinyl.

Well, depending on your collection, you might have beefed up. Here are eight CDs worth a pretty penny nowadays…

7 Taylor Swift: Teardrops on My Guitar (Promo)

Most of this list is occupied, understandably, by older acts, but that doesn ’ t mean fairly recent CDs might not hold some value. In this case, it ’ s promotional copies of Taylor Swift ’ s Teardrops on My Guitar . Driven, I assume, by what I would call a “heavily enthusiastic” fanbase, a promo copy of the album has sold for over $1,200 on eBay .

6 Bob Dylan: 50th Anniversary Collection

One of the CDs that you might actually have seen some collector ’ s value in was this anniversary album from Bob Dylan. It ’ s rare, since only 100 copies were made, but if you were a big Dylan fan, it ’ s one you may have sought out. If you managed to get one, and it survived a couple closet cleanings, it can be worth over $2,500 .

5 Rolling Stones: Steel Wheels Japan Tour 1990

In looking up prices for this list, I can make one recommendation: Any CDs you might own that are from Japan, I would Google. For whatever reason, they seem to make up a good portion of the rarest compact discs — the less made, the better. If you were a Rolling Stones fan in search of live performances, and ended up with a copy of their promotional 1990 Steel Wheels Japan Tour CD, you ’ ve got the circular equivalent of 2,000 pounds sterling .

4 Eminem: Slim Shady EP

Underground rap fans tend to be avid collectors. No one in their right mind would still consider Eminem anywhere near underground, but at one point, he was just a strange, disturbed man from Detroit, and CDs from before he hit it big are worth their weight in gold. Specifically, the “Slim Shady EP,” both rare and relevant since it was the debut of his Slim Shady alter-ego, is worth an absolutely insane $12,000 .

3 Nirvana: Pennyroyal Tea

If you were a Nirvana superfan before the death of Kurt Cobain, you might own a single worth a pretty penny. The single version of Pennyroyal Tea was released in April 1994, but it didn ’ t stay on shelves long. The reason? The aforementioned self-inflicted fatality of the lead singer, which led to the album being recalled. If you picked it up during the brief window it was available, you lucked in on a CD worth between $1,500 and $2,000 today .

2 Coldplay: The Safety EP

I ’ d bet a comparable amount of money to this album ’ s current value that Coldplay was not a band you ’ d expect to see on this list, but here we are. The Safety EP , Coldplay ’ s first ever public album, was limited to 500 copies, and if you happened to own one, you'd be sitting on over a thousand bucks .

1 Suikoden II (PlayStation)

Lest we forget that music wasn ’ t the only media burned onto CDs, we ’ ll include one entry from CD-based gaming titan PlayStation. If you happen to have a copy of Suikoden II, a Japanese RPG that found itself mostly forgotten on a system full of them, I ’ d recommend making your way over to eBay. Copies can be worth over $1,300 a pop today .

K-pop

Trafalgar Releasing and CJ 4DPlex are launching a strategic partnership that will focus on producing, programming, delivering and marketing four K-pop cinema releases globally in 2024. The films will be shown across a combination of premium formats such as ScreenX, 4DX, Ultra 4DX and traditional cinema locations.

Trafalgar Releasing moved into the K-pop market with the 2018 concert film, “BTS: Burn the Stage the Movie.” The company said it has since generated more than $120 million in box office revenue from K-pop releases.

Trafalgar Releasing and CJ 4DPLEX have worked together on previous global cinema releases since 2021 including the live broadcast of Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres Tour, as well as with numerous K-pop artists such as Blackpink, Seventeen, IU, MonstaX and NCT Dream.

“We are delighted to reaffirm our robust relationship with Trafalgar Releasing,“ stated Jong Kim, CEO of CJ 4DPlex. “CJ 4DPlex’s production expertise, special formats and global network alongside Trafalgar Releasing’s excellence in event cinema distribution, continues to expand the realms of cinema and fan culture alike.”

“Building on our deep and established relationship working alongside CJ 4DPlex on theatrical releases for artists including Coldplay, Blackpink and NCT Nation, we are excited to announce a four-film production and distribution deal in the K-pop genre, starting with the theatrical release of aespa next month,” said Marc Allenby, CEO of Trafalgar Releasing. “K-pop has firmly established itself as a dominant force in event cinema, and we are eager to expand opportunities for the genre to flourish. With our commitment to investing in the co-financing of these projects, we aim to fully maximize their long-term prospects.”

As far as the various screens go, ScreenX boasts a multi-projection cinema system with 270-degree views that surround the audience. To date, there are over 339 ScreenX auditoriums around the world in 43 countries.  4DX is a multi-sensory experience, one that adds motion, vibration, water, wind, snow, lightning, scents, and other special effects to movies. There are over 745 4DX auditoriums around the world, spanning over 71 countries.  The company says that Ultra 4DX combines the ScreenX and 4DX technologies in one presentation. There are 47 of these auditoriums installed around the globe.

Trafalgar Releasing distributes several different types of cinema releases, ranging from The Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera House, to theatre productions, to concerts from the likes of Billie Eilish, Metallica, Louis Tomlinson and Dolly Parton. The company recently handled the distribution of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and “Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce” across Europe, Asia and South America in partnership with AMC Theatres.

Gwyneth Paltrow's Son Moses Shows Off Uncanny Resemblance to Chris Martin in New 18th Birthday Photo

Gwyneth paltrow and chris martin's son moses is all grown up—and looking very much like his coldplay singer dad—in a new photo celebrating his 18th birthday..

A teenage Chris Martin probably looks something just like this.

That's what fans are saying after the Coldplay  frontman's ex  Gwyneth Paltrow  shared a photo of their son Moses   on April 8 in honor of his 18th birthday. In the picture, the teenager—clad in a navy shirt—looked like a spitting image of his dad as he gazed into the camera lens with his bright blue eyes.

"I am so proud of who you are," Gwyneth captioned the snapshot on Instagram. "I love your sensitivity and brilliance and quiet humor."

And it seems Moses is taking after his father in more ways than one. As the Oscar winner noted, their son has also become "an expert in synths from the 80's and the French new wave."

"I love how much you love the people you love, but also how internal you are," she continued. "There is such a magnificent world of ideas and harmonies inside that beautiful head of yours. I am unbelievably proud of the person you are today, as you cross over the threshold into adulthood."

The  Goop founder  added, "I love you more than words can say, @mosesmartin you absolutely kill me."

“This is an incredible time in my life as I am experiencing so many milestone ‘firsts.’ Being the FIRST female Hip Hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now going out on my FIRST headline tour,” Elliott said in a statement about the 24-city tour co-produced by Live Nation and Elliott’s longtime manager Mona Scott-Young. “Fans have been asking me to tour forever but I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right because I knew if I was ever going to do it, I had to do it big, and I had to do it with family! So get ready to be taken OUT OF THIS WORLD with me, Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and Timbaland! We can’t wait to share this experience with the fans!”

In keeping with Elliott’s legendarily out-there music videos, the tour announce was accompanied by a short teaser video helmed by another one of Missy’s frequent collaborators, director Dave Meyers. “In 2024, these three icons come together to show you something you’ve never seen before,” Elliott says in voiceover in the clip in which she, Busta and Ciara emerge from the spacecraft.

In an additional statement about her client’s first-ever headlining tour, Scott-Young said, “Missy has always been an iconic groundbreaker and continuously pushes herself to be bolder and go where she has never been before – and surprisingly, one of those places is headlining her own tour! For decades, fans and peers worldwide have clamored for Missy to tour and they’re finally going to get what they’ve been asking for as she teams up with Ciara, Busta, and longtime partner-in-rhyme Timbaland, to deliver a start-to-finish, nonstop, high-octane, OUT OF THIS WORLD concert experience. This will be one for the books, so trust me, you don’t want to miss it!”

Tickets for the tour will go on sale first through a Verizon presale that kicks off on Tuesday (April 9) beginning at 10 a.m. local time through Thursday (April 11) at 10 p.m. local time; click here for more details.
