Who's in, who's out at the 2023 Tour Championship: All 30 qualifiers and where they start at East Lake

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — For all the jockeying for position over 72 holes at Olympia Fields Country Club, for all the drama as players moved in and out of the top 30 in the FedEx Cup points standings, only one player—Matt Fitzpatrick—was able to play his way into the Tour Championship on Sunday.
Fitzpatrick had hoped for more, of course, after beginning the final round of the BMW Championship tied atop the leaderboard with World No 1 Scottie Scheffler. He matched Scheffler with a closing four-under 66, but the Englishman couldn’t counter the magnificent charge of Viktor Hovland , who fired a course-record 61. Fitzpatrick had to settle for joint second place with Scheffler at 15-under 265. Nevertheless, the former U.S. Open winner moved up 30 spots and heads to East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta in 10th place in the standings.
“Yeah, played great. Can't do anything about 61,” the Englishman said. “For me, just really pleased again that I played really well final round in contention with world No. 1, and I didn't lose it. Someone else came from behind and won it. I feel like my game is definitely in better shape than it was, and yeah, looking forward to getting to next week and working on it some more, and hopefully still progressing.”
With a move up, one player had to be pushed out, and that was Atlanta native Chris Kirk, who suffered a miserable finish with bogeys on three of his last six holes, including the 18th. Kirk, winner for the first time in eight years at the Honda Classic in March, dropped from 29th to 33rd after a closing one-over 71.
“I’m not sure how I feel about it. I hit two of the best shots [approaches] of the day the last two holes and went par, bogey,” said Kirk after finishing T-29 at two-under 278. “I’d like to have one more week, but I feel like I’ve had enough golf for the next couple of months.”
More From Golf Digest
Scheffler’s only consolation on the day was overtaking Jon Rahm for the top spot at East Lake, the first time in FedEx Cup playoff history that a player enters the Tour Championship with the lead in back-to-back years. He’ll start the tournament at 10 under par and with a two-stroke advantage over Hovland.
Rory McIlroy, the defending champion and the only three-time winner of the FedEx Cup, will start third and three shots behind Scheffler at seven under in the staggered-start format. He was seventh a year ago and six shots behind Scheffler before a final-day rally.
“I'm playing great tee to green, the best I've played in a long time,” McIlroy said after finishing fourth with a closing 66 on the North Course while paired with Hovland. “Going to have to drive the ball probably a little straighter, but I felt like I found something on the back nine there today to go into next week. but overall I'm in a really good position going into next week, so excited for it.”
Matt Fitzpatrick was the only golfer to play his way into the Tour Championship this week at the BMW Championship, moving from 40th to 10th place in the FedEx Cup standings with his T-2 finish at Olympia Fields.
Stacy Revere
Rounding out the top five in the FedEx Cup standings are Rahm, who will start at six under par, and Lucas Glover, who begins at five under. Fitzpatrick is in a group with five others who will be staked to a score of four under par.
No fewer than six players were in the hunt for the final few berths in the playoff finale, with Sepp Straka perhaps coming up with the most clutch performance, carding a 66 despite a bogey on the 72nd hole. His two-over 282 left him T-37, but he stayed inside the bubble for the playoff finale in 30th place.
“You watch it, but ultimately it doesn't really matter because most of it's out of your control anyway,” said the 30-year-old Austrian native, who had booked two flights out of Chicago, one to Atlanta and one going on home to Birmingham, Ala. “You've just got to try to play a good round of golf and see where you end up.”
Straka, Jordan Spieth and Emiliano Grillo began the week inside the top 30 but found themselves projected outside the top 30 after 54 holes only to bounce back to the plus side on Sunday.
Grillo carded a 67, enough to finish T-31 at even-par 280 and qualified in 27th position. Despite bogeys on his final two holes, Spieth advanced. He had dropped as far down as 32 in the projections when he signed for a 71 before getting help from 2018 FedEx Cup champion Justin Rose and Denny McCarthy, who were inside the number as the final round began but couldn't keep it. Spieth finished T-34 at one-over 281.
Sahith Theegala also figured in the matrix of things, giving himself hope with three straight birdies starting at the par-5 15th, bit then the second-year tour player bogeyed the last for a 67 and 274 total, tied for 15th, which left him in that agonizing 31st position, nine points behind Straka.
Rose had played his way in from 34th at the outset of the week with middle rounds of 65 and 68 and then fell away with 73-276, placing T-22. McCarthy was projected in at No. 30 when his final round began, but his even-par 70 wasn’t enough to keep it, ending up 33rd with his T-10 finish at 273.

These five golfers – four of them aussies – earned 2024 pga tour champions tour cards at q school at tpc scottsdale, share this article.
The PGA Tour Champions had five tour cards for 2024 up for grabs at TPC Scottsdale’s Champions Course this week.
The final stage of Q School for the senior circuit provided 78 golfers 72 holes to snag status for next season.
By Friday, 73 of those golfers came up short, including Baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz (dead last by eight shots at 22 over), 72-year-old Dick Mast (who shot or beat his age two times this week), Notah Begay, Shaun Micheel, Ted Purdy, Carlos Franco and Bryan Hoops, the lone amateur in the field who missed out on a playoff by a stroke.
All is not lost for those who finished sixth through 30th, as they will be eligible to apply for PGA Tour Champions Associate Membership for 2024, which would then get them into qualifiers.
But for those lucky top five, they are now fully exempt into all open, full-field events for the 2024 season on the PGA Tour Champions.
Here’s a closer look at what turned out to be an Aussie takeover, with Australian golfers earning four of the five cards.
Cameron Percy
Cameron Percy of Australia plays his shot from the sixth tee during the third round of the 2023 World Wide Technology Championship at El Cardonal at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. (Photo: Orlando Ramirez/Getty Images)
Percy shot 65-66-66-67, finishing the week at 20 under and winning by five shots to leave no doubt. The victory earned him $30,000. Percy will turn 50 on May 5, 2024.
Funny thing is, Percy almost didn’t make the trek to Scottsdale.
“I wasn’t going to come (here), I was exhausted,” he said. “I was actually going to get ready for the PGA Tour’s Q-School next week. I was told to go to Q-School here and get my card. It’s so much better than having to Monday qualify. So, I did, and, it has all paid off.”
Michael Wright
Australia’s Michael Wright shot a third-round 63 to get into 10th place after 54 holes. On his final hole in the final round Friday, he holed out from a dirt lie for an all-world birdie, closing with a 66 and vaulting to solo second.
Holy shit. Last hole of Champions Q-school, Michael Wright was tied for second. Hit it into a bad spot in desert and chipped out to here. Then this happened…. pic.twitter.com/88QsJmWR1j — Monday Q Info (@acaseofthegolf1) December 8, 2023
“I hit what was my worst drive all week at No. 18 today, down into the desert,” he said. “I had a terrible lie on the rocks, leaving me with no option to try and hack a 5-iron. It went, maybe, 30 yards, but stayed on the dirt on the desert.”
From there, about 120 yards out, he found the jar.
Wright won $20,000 for his work this week at Q School. He turns 50 on Feb. 21, 2024.
Steve Allan

Steve Allan, like Percy and Wright a native of Australia, shot 68-66-65-71 to finish 14-under 203 and tie for third.
Allan hasn’t played a full schedule of pro golf since 2017 when he entered 20 tournaments on the Korn Ferry Tour. He played 17 events in 2009 on the PGA Tour. He’s yet to play a Champions event as he turned 50 in October.
Shane Bertsch

Shane Bertsch shot 65-66-70-69 for a four day total of 14-under 270 to finish tied for third. Bertsch has 82 starts on the Champions tour with one victory, the 2020 Charles Schwab Series at Bass Pro Shops Big Cedar Lodge. He was 39th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings in 2023 with just two top-10s.
“It feels good to have full-exempt next to my name,” he said. “I was in pretty good shape coming in, but the bottom line is, I was trying to improve my position. So, I’m really happy and proud of what I’ve done.”
David Bransdon

David Bransdon outlasted Wes Short, Jr., of the U.S. and Raphael Jacquelin of France in a 3-for-1 playoff to nab the fifth and final tour card for 2024. He also gives Australia four of the five card-winners from this year’s Q School.
Bransdon has only appeared in two PGA Tour events and nine Korn Ferry Tour events. He’s never played in a Champions event. He does have 114 starts on the DP World Tour, where he has just four top-10s. At Q School, he posted scores of 69-70-65-67 to get into the playoff.

Charlie Woods takes part in first PGA Tour pre-qualifier event for 2024 Cognizant Classic
Charlie Woods has just wrapped up his first round at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches' pre-qualifier as the the 15-year-old makes his first attempt at qualifying for a PGA Tour event.
The son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods was one of the first golfers to tee off at Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida, and he arrived more than an hour before his 7:39 a.m. tee time to get some practice on his putting. Woods was paired with longtime mini-tour pro Olin Browne Jr., son of three-time Tour winner Olin Browne, for the round.
Overall, Woods struggled in the opening round, finishing 16-over-86 with four bogeys, two double bogeys and taking a 12 on the par-4 7th hole. But the teen got the experience of playing in a qualifying event and appeared to enjoy the round.
Billy Basham was the leader with a 65 as of early Thursday afternoon with only a few groups finished with the round.
The top five and ties at Woods' pre-qualifying site will advance to Monday's open qualifier (Lost Lake is one of four pre-qualifying sites). The top four from the Monday qualifier will advance to the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, contested next Thursday-Sunday at PGA National's Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Woods was trying to make his first start on the PGA Tour at 15 years, 21 days old, younger than when his dad made his debut on the tour at 16 years old.
Although this is Woods' first time competing to qualify for an official PGA Tour event, he has played alongside his father in the PNC Championship – which features PGA Tour players partnering with family members in an alternate-shot competition – since 2019.

Cameron Percy led the way, shooting 20-under and winning by four shots to claim the medalist honors of the 2024 PGA Tour Champions Qualifying Tournament Final stage at TPC Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Percy shot a final round 4-under 67 to close the door on the field. He was a model of consistency, shooting rounds of 65-66-66-67 to earn his Champions Tour card.
Michael Wright finished in solo second place at 16-under after holing out from the dirt on the par-4 No. 18 to finish with a birdie. It was a risky shot for Wright, as he was just three shots out of the playoff, and there was water hugging the left of the green. One mishit and four rounds of great golf could have been in danger. However, he stepped up and hit his best shot of the tournament right when he needed it.
Wright started slow, shooting rounds of 68-72 in the first two rounds, but catapulted up the leaderboard after a third round 8-under 63. He shot a final round 5-under 66
Shane Bertsch and Steve Allan finished T3 at 14-under and earned the third and fourth qualifying spots. The American Bertsch was the only non-Australian to finish in the top five and qualify. Bertsch shot rounds of 65-66-70-69, while Allan shot rounds of 68-66-65-71.
Bransdon earned the coveted fifth spot on the first playoff hole, the par-5 No. 10, after he finished at 13-under alongside Wes Short, Jr., and Raphael Jacquelin. All five Q-School graduates will receive exempt status on the 2024 PGA TOUR Champions once they turn 50. Wright and Percy turn 50 early next year. Allan turned 50 on Oct. 18, and Bransdon turned 50 on Oct. 28.
The lone amateur in the field, Bryan Hoops, shot a final round 5-under 66 to finish T8 at 12-under, just one shot out of the playoff for the final spot. He birdied Holes No. 17 and 18 coming in, but his bogey on No. 16 was the deciding factor.
The golfers who finished sixth through 30th will be eligible to apply for PGA Tour Champions Associate Membership for 2024, which would then get them into qualifiers.
PGA Tour winners Greg Chalmers and Daniel Chopra finished in between the sixth and 30th spots, finishing T8 and just one shot outside of the playoff. Chalmers was in a good position to make the playoff, but a bogey on No. 18 took him out of it.
PGA Tour winners Notah Begay III, Ted Purdy, and Boo Weekley did not make either cut.
Former Atlanta Braves and Hall of Fame pitcher John Smotz played in the Final Stage, hoping to secure a spot on the Champions Tour for next season. However, he shot rounds of 80-76-76-74 to finish 22-under and in solo 73rd place.
